In this clip (via Yahoo), Miller talks about the first time he saw The Road Warrior in black and white, which inspired him to want create this version of Fury Road, which he calls "the best version of the movie."

We'll get a chance to agree or disagree with him when this new take on Fury Road roars onto Blu-ray on December 6, just in time for the holiday season.

Stephen King Wrote a Children's Book Called CHARLIE THE CHOO CHOO, and It Comes out Soon

Whoa! I never thought I'd see the Master of Horror, Stephen King, write a children's book, but he did! The book is called Charlie the Choo Choo, and he wrote it under the pseudonym Beryl Evans, who is a character in King's Dark Tower novel The Waste Lands. I should also probably mention that the story is set in the Dark Tower universe!

King even write his own blurb for the book in which he says, “If I were ever to write a children’s book, it would be just like this!”

Engineer Bob has a secret: His train engine, Charlie the Choo-Choo, is alive…and also his best friend. From celebrated author Beryl Evans and illustrator Ned Dameron comes a story about friendship, loyalty, and hard work.

It's so strange that King has written a kid's book, but I've got to read it! This wouldn't be the first time that King has written under a pseudonym. When he first started his writing career he wrote under the name Richard Bachman.

Charlie the Choo Choo is set to be published and released by Simon & Schuster Books on November 22nd.

Black Widow's First Kill Has Been Revealed, and It's Messed Up

The history behind Natasha Romanoff's road to becoming Black Widow is a dark one. There are a lot of mysteries surrounding it, but Marvel has been revealing bits and pieces of it here and there in the movies and the comics.

Before Natasha was Black Widow and fighting with The Avengers, she was a deadly assassin who killed lots of people. In the latest issue of the Black Widow comic, we learn the story of her very first kill, and it's kinda messed up.

The comic is a thriller that centers on Natasha coming to terms with her dark past. It's being written by artist Chris Samnee and scribe Mark Waid. Below you'll find the panels from Black Widow #7 that tells the story. They come from io9, who also offers a breakdown of the story.

This is enough to make want to start reading this comic. It looks great and intriguing. Check it out!

The first story arc had Natasha in thrall to the Weeping Lion, a urban-legend operative who had access to her biggest secrets. After a flubbed mission, her involvement with the abduction of scientist Ho Yinsen—who helped Tony Stark build the first Iron Man armor while held captive by an evil warlord—became public knowledge.

A confrontation with Stark gave her the means to discover psychic Ilya Knezevic as the Weeping Lion’s true identity, but she still didn’t know why he’s determined to destroy her.
black-widows-first-kill-has-been-revealed-and-its-messed-up4 black-widows-first-kill-has-been-revealed-and-its-messed-up5
Knezevic’s motivation is revealed in this week’s Black Widow #7, as Natasha’s forces the psychic to help her infiltrate the new Dark Room training facility so she can stop her old mentor from raising a new generation of child assassins. Knezevic knows all too well how lethal a kid killer can be, because he watched a young Natasha brutally murder his uncle and slit his cousin’s throat.

Unbeknownst to her, Natasha left a pair of eyes alive during her first kill. They belong to Ilija, who grows up to see Natasha being called a hero. Natasha Romanoff had done good things, saving the world with the Avengers. But she’s also done bad things and the world’s understanding of her currently stands in an intriguingly ambiguous place.

The First Trailer for LOGAN Is Here and This Movie Looks Incredible!

The first trailer for the third and final Wolverine film with Hugh Jackman has been released! Logan looks like it's going to be one hell of a great film! Finally, fans are going to get the hardcore Wolverine film we've been waiting for! I love that Logan teams up with Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier in this film. It makes perfect sense to bring these two characters together one last time.

As hardcore and insane as this film looks, it also seems like it will tell a beautiful story of redemption. The trailer you're about to watch is really quite emotional. Damn... I can't wait to watch this movie!

Logan takes place in the year 2024...Old Man Logan is in full effect. Logan looks bad, and drinks a lot. For work, he drives a 2024 Chrysler 300 limo that looks modified in the front to look more futuristic. He’s sick, his powers are fading, and he heals much more slowly — and sometimes not at all.

Logan is set for released on March 3rd, 2017

Couch Tomato is back with another 24 Reasons video, and this one compares the 2012 Tom Cruise thriller Jack Reacher to...the 1988 Carl Weathers movie Action Jackson? I don't know about you, but I've never actually seen that movie, so I'm interested to dive in and learn a little about it while discovering some bizarrely specific plot beats and aspects that it shares with a movie that came out 24 years later. if-you-love-martial-arts-films-watch-this-trailer-for-mifune-the-last-samurai-doc1

If you're a fan of classic martial arts films there's no doubt that you know the name Toshiro Mifune. Over the course of his career, he made 16 incredible films with director Akira Kurosawa, which include classics such as Rashomon, Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo. These films inspired some of America's classic westerns including The Magnificent Seven, Clint Eastwood’s A Fistful of Dollars, and of course, George Lucas’ Star Wars.

A trailer has been released for a great looking new documentary called Mifune: The Last Samurai directed by Steven Okazaki, which "explores the accidental movie career of Toshiro Mifune, one of the true giants of world cinema." When talking about Mifune, director Steven Spielberg says, “A lot of people try to imitate Mifune, especially when they’re playing strong and silent but nobody can. He was unique in all the world.”

The film has only been playing in film festivals around the world. There's no release date set yet, but as a fan of Mifune and his films, I can't wait to watch this doc!

Trailer for Gore Verbinski's Insane Looking Psychological Thriller, A CURE FOR WELLNESS

Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean) returns to the horror genre with his latest film, A Cure for Wellness. Verbinski is such a strong visual director and storyteller. Things got a little out of hand with his Pirates films, but for the most part, I've enjoyed the movies his movies, and this latest project looks freakin' incredible! The film stars Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man), and it's going to be a crazy psychological thriller! Here's the synopsis:

An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure.

The wellness center looks like a maddening insane asylum, which might be one of the reasons I'm drawn to the movie. I'm fascinated by the history of mental health and old asylums. A Cure for Wellness also stars Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) and Mia Goth (The Survivalist, Nymphomaniac). It's set to be released in theaters on February 17th, 2017.

Check Out This Kid's Awesome GHOSTBUSTERS Ecto-1 Halloween Costume!

This kid Jeremy got one of the coolest Ghostbusters costumes ever made with the Ecto-1! It was created by his dad to fit on Jeremy's wheelchair. Last year he built him a Star Wars Snowspeeder costume, which you can check out here.

The latest costume is modeled after the Funko Pop! Ghostbusters Ecto-1 toy, and his dad made sure to include all of the bells and whistles that you'd expect the Ecto-1 to have. Here's a note from his dad:

"Every year we've tried to step up the scale of the costume builds we do for Jeremy. This year we put it to a vote and our friends choose the Ghostbusters Ecto-1!

"The Ecto-1 include working headlights, siren lights, tail lights and speakers for Ghostbusters siren and theme music! The roof rack includes yellow canisters, green canister, blue tubes, ladder, red probe, siren light, two speakers (one for the Ghostbusters siren and one for theme music), satelite dish and whatever the white & red canister is from the Ecto-1."

I've included a video below of Jeremy in action showing off his costume this year. As you'll see, his dad did a great job on this thing!

Colin Firth Joins Emily Blunt in MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service) is in negotiations to star alongside Emily Blunt in director Rob Marshall's Mary Poppins Returns. This casting makes complete sense because Firth seems like he actually belongs in a Mary Poppins film. He's perfect, and it's like one of the things he was born to do.

According to Variety, "Firth will play William Weatherall Wilkins, president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank." The story is set 25 years after the events of the first film, and Jane and Micheal Banks, who are played by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer, are all grown up when they unexpectedly get another visit from Poppins.

Meryl Streep was previously cast in the role of Poppins’ cousin, and Hamilton star and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to play a street lamplighter named Jack. Firth is a perfect addition to this already incredible cast.

I'm a huge fan of the original Mary Poppins, and I can't wait to see how this sequel turns out. It's set to hit theaters on December 25th, 2018.

First Reactions to Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE Praise the Film; Plus a New Clip

A flood of first reaction reviews for Marvel's Doctor Strange has hit the internet, and it sounds like Marvel fans are in for something pretty incredible! There is a lot of praise for the crazy psychedelic visual effects, the characters, the uniqueness of the film and how it brings something fresh to the MCU. You can read through the reviews below. They've definitely managed to get me even more pumped up about seeing this movie! I didn't think that was possible, but with everyone talking about how awesome it is, how can I not be more excited?!

It has also been confirmed that there will be two post-credits scenes teasing the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Below the reactions I included a new clip from the film called "Heal the Body" that introduces Strange to the astral form. It's an extension of what we've seen in the trailer of The Ancient One punching Stephen Strange's astral form out of his body. It's pretty cool!

Doctor Strange will hit theater on November 4th and here are the reactions:

Even beyond its insane visuals (cool stuff like you've never seen before), #DoctorStrange is tons of fun. A bit formulaic, but very solid.

DOCTOR STRANGE is unlike any previous Marvel movie and that’s why I love Marvel. They keep pushing boundaries and make it look easy.

- Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) October 20, 2016

Visuals in DOCTOR STRANGE are fantastic. Actually worth seeing in 3D. Cumberbatch is great as the Sorcerer Supreme.

- Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) October 20, 2016

DOCTOR STRANGE has two after the credits scenes like most Marvel movies. They both set up future things...trying to stay spoiler free.

- Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) October 20, 2016

not going to say DOCTOR STRANGE is the best Marvel movie. It’s not. But it’s an awesome Doctor Strange movie with visuals that will floor u.

- Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) October 20, 2016

still in shock we've reached a point where Marvel can release a Doctor Strange movie. Can't believe how far we've come in 10 years.

Doctor Strange's action set pieces make an MC Escher paintings look tame. Some really great, clever, incentive stuff. Worth the 3D ticket.

- Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) October 20, 2016

Cumberbatch owns Doctor Strange, the movie is funnier than I was expecting, a throwback to a pre-MCU Iron Man-like standalone story.

- Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) October 20, 2016

DOCTOR STRANGE = YES on California Proposition 64 because I want some of whatever Marvel has been smoking and I want it stat

DOCTOR STRANGE magic makes HARRY POTTER's look like parlour tricks. Dark & spooky psychedelic horrors, abracadabra wowie zowie. Loved it

- Josh L. Spoockey (@JLDlite) October 20, 2016

Best of all, DOCTOR STRANGE's characters are as multi-dimensional as they can be. Their setups & payoffs are dazzling sleights of hand

- Josh L. Spoockey (@JLDlite) October 20, 2016

#DoctorStrange is definitely Marvel's strangest movie to date, but it's weird & wild in all the best ways. Incredible imagery, heady story

- ErikDavis (@ErikDavis) October 20, 2016

The action sequences in #DoctorStrange are unlike anything Marvel's done. There are so ferociously loopy, frenetic & nerdy, I adore them.

- ErikDavis (@ErikDavis) October 20, 2016

If #DoctorStrange has a weak spot, it's w/ its humor. Doesn't mesh as well as it does in other Marvel movies. But man is this sucker a ride!

- ErikDavis (@ErikDavis) October 20, 2016

DOCTOR STRANGE is guilty of *all* the usual Marvel movie problems, but Tilda & some VERY trippy visuals make it a spectacle worth savoring.

- david ehrlich (@davidehrlich) October 20, 2016

also, DOCTOR STRANGE is something i never thought i’d see: a Marvel movie with a good original score. what a time to be alive.

- david ehrlich (@davidehrlich) October 20, 2016

I liked DOCTOR STRANGE. The most self-contained Marvel movie in a long time. Fun visuals. Almost felt like a reboot of the first IRON MAN.

- Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) October 20, 2016

In that it feels obvious that asshole yet charming Stephen Strange is here to eventually take the place of asshole yet charming Tony Stark.

- Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) October 20, 2016

Strange and Stark are *almost* the same character. Makes sense now they'd hire big star Cumberbatch to phase in while Downey phases out.

- Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) October 20, 2016

I hope someday he learns to just be Doctor Normal.

- Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) October 20, 2016

I wouldn't put #DoctorStrange in Marvel's top five but it's an entertaining movie with big ideas, gorgeous CGI and unique action sequences.

#DoctorStrange has some of the best action sequences in any Marvel movie EVER.

- Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) October 20, 2016

There are some problems with the humor and the pacing of the story itself. #DoctorStrange

- Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) October 20, 2016

Benedict Cumberbatch IS #DoctorStrange though. His performance anchors the whole movie. Not too 5 Marvel, but still good.

- Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) October 20, 2016

And it teases some very exciting things for the future of the MCU. #DoctorStrange

- Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) October 20, 2016

Also, Michael Giacchino's #DoctorStrange music is Marvel's best score to date.

- Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) October 20, 2016

I saw Dr Strange. It is better than I could have ever hoped for. Among the very best Marvel films. It dazzles and entertains throughout.

- Jeff Cannata (@jeffcannata) October 20, 2016

Remember when The Mateix made you rethink what was possible in an action sequence? Dr Strange does that 4 or 5 times.

- Jeff Cannata (@jeffcannata) October 20, 2016

Prepare to dig #DoctorStrange! Not the strongest script, but it legitimately adds new colors to the MCU, and the action is beautiful & crazy

- Evil Eric Eisenberg (@eeisenberg) October 20, 2016

#DrStrange was so much better than I thought it would be. Incredible performances by Tilda and Benedict. Yaaaas @Marvel

I should add that Mads Mikkelsen is great too. Another win for Marvel #DoctorStrangehttps://t.co/QFmnU26ew8

#DoctorStrange isn't one of Marvel's very best, but it is still a very entertaining and visually dazzling movie with plenty of highlights.

- Eric Goldman (@TheEricGoldman) October 20, 2016

Now that #DoctorStrange got the origin story out of the way, I am excited to see him as part of the MCU and how he opens it up even more.

With The Walking Dead's seventh season premiere hitting AMC this weekend, now's a good time for a brief refresher, and who better than...British comedy legend John Cleese to walk us through it? Wait, what?

Yep, the Monty Python badass narrates this four minute trip down memory lane, quipping his way through the video as he gives us a quick rundown of all of the major plot beats that have happened since the series started back in 2010. Obviously there's a ton of stuff he skips over, but what do you expect in four minutes?

Watch: LOGAN International Trailer Has a Gruesome R-Rated Kill Not Seen in Domestic Trailer

The first trailer for James Mangold's Logan arrived online this morning, and it looks like a fantastic send-off for Hugh Jackman's iteration of Wolverine. This looks about a hundred times better than X-Men: Apocalypse, and one of the things that fans seem to be responding to is the somber, serious tone of the film, which seems to fit the idea of the movie's bleak future and Wolverine's last ride. One of the things fans have been excited about for a long time is that this movie is supposed to have an R rating, and a quick glimpse of footage from the new international trailer seems to confirm that in a major way.

Take a look at the 1:27 mark in the video below (via ComingSoon), but beware — it's violent:

Man, that's brutal! That's the kind of stuff that hardcore Wolverine fans have been wanting to see for years — it's like an even more graphic version of when Wolverine went started killing dudes in that invasion of the X-Mansion in X-Men 2.

Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017. What do you think about this R-rated kill?

10 Years Later, THE PRESTIGE Is Still Christopher Nolan's Best Film

$
0
0

Christopher Nolan's The Prestige premiered ten years ago today, on October 20, 2006. Despite the fact that he's directed more critically acclaimed movies since then, I'm here to make the case that The Prestige remains his best work.

Yes, his Batman trilogy is largely great (the first two movies are terrific, but let's face it, The Dark Knight Rises isn't nearly as good). Yes, Inception is amazing (I love that movie so much, I have a framed poster of it on my wall). But The Prestige contains all of the themes Nolan loves to explore in his films: tragic loss, a man's quest for knowledge, that quest serving as an obstacle to love, enduring unimaginable sacrifice, and, most importantly, obsession. Not only that, but the way he plays with time here is a more refined version of what he did in his breakout movie, Memento; while that film will forever be defined solely by its unique structure, The Prestige uses its own non-linear structure (which cleverly mirrors a magic trick, as laid out by Michael Caine's Cutter) as simply another tool to effectively tell its story, allowing for a powerful (and somewhat horrifying) twist ending that makes you want to immediately watch the whole movie again.

(Side note: I can understand why some people check out of this movie when they realize there's a supernatural twist, but though it's inarguably one of the most "out there" facets of Nolan's filmography, I still think it works on both a storytelling and emotional level.)

Hugh Jackman delivers the second-best performance of his career (I think this one ranks just below his transcendent work in The Fountain), and Christian Bale is equally excellent, but this is not a movie content with sitting back and letting its actors do the bulk of the work. Wally Pfister's gorgeous cinematography, Nathan Crowley's elegant production design, Lee Smith's  savvy editing...all unite in service of the movie's enthralling script, which Nolan and his brother Jonathan (now the co-showrunner of Westworld) adapted from Christopher Priest's 1995 novel.

There's a meta aspect of storytelling involved here as well. When Inception came out, a popular reading theorized that the movie was a metaphor for filmmaking, with each of the individual characters representing a different member of a film crew (Cobb is the director, Ariadne is the production designer, etc). Inception may have been the film in which Nolan hammered down that metaphor more directly than anywhere else in his filmography, but those seeds are there in The Prestige as well, just in a less obvious way. In one of my favorite scenes, Nolan draws a direct parallel between writing a film and constructing a magic trick. Jackman's Robert Angier pulls off his version of The Transported Man using a double, but in order to do that, the real Angier falls through a trap door in the stage, forced to invisibly take a bow underneath as the "fake" version receives rapturous applause from the audience. A film's writer, one of the key architects of the "magic" of the movie, is also often left behind the scenes and rarely able to receive the credit he or she deserves.

Nolan has certainly made more ambitious movies than The Prestige (Interstellar, I'm lookin' at you), but looking back on this film ten years after its debut, I still don't think he's made a better one.

AQUAMAN Will Be a Swashbuckling Adventure Film in the Spirit of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

I don't know about you, but I'm really curious to see how James Wan's Aquaman is going to turn out. I liked what I saw of Jason Momoa's Aquaman in the Justice League trailer, and it will be fun to really see him in action. In a recent interview with WGRZ, Wan talked about Aquaman:

"I think Amber [Heard] and Jason Momoa, in their moments in Justice League, [are] going to give the rest of the world a flavor of what their own standalone movie could be. And that is just scratching the surface of what I plan to do."

He explained the tone of the standalone film and described it as a swashbuckling action adventure film in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark:

"I kind of don't want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I'm going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story. It's ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone."

That actually sounds really exciting! The movie doesn't come out until July 27th, 2018, so we've got a long way to go, but we'll get to see him kick some ass next year in Justice League. Wan is one of my favorite directors working today, and I trust that he's going to give us something the fans will love.

Paramount Pictures has released the final trailer for their upcoming sci-fi alien invasion drama Arrival. I'm looking forward to seeing this movie because it seems like it's going to tell a fascinating story. This newest trailer is loaded with new footage and also expands on the story.

The film comes from director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario), which is another reason I'm confident that this is going to be an awesome movie. It also has a fantastic cast that includes Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, and Michael Stuhlbarg. The film is based on Ted Chiang’s 1998 novella Story of Your Life, and this is the synopsis:

When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

Arrival will be released in theaters on November 11th.

I'm typically not a fan of Cinema Sins, but this one is well deserved. If you've never seen Ouija, it's a pretty awful film. Dominic Monaghan and Ksenia Solo Out Crazy Each Other in Dark Trailer for PET

If you liked Dominic Monaghan in his happy roles like Lord of the Rings and Lost, you probably shouldn't watch this trailer. Monaghan takes on his darkest role yet alongside Ksenia Solo in the crazy abduction film Pet. Here's the official description...

Sweet but lonely Seth (Dominic Monaghan) spends his days working in an animal shelter. In a hopeless daze, he has a chance encounter with beautiful young waitress Holly (Ksenia Solo) who awakens something within him. Obsessed, he tries everything to win her over. Time and again, she rejects him, leading him to steal her journal and make a plan: to kidnap Holly. After Seth takes Holly, she wakes up in a cage beneath the animal shelter, treated like the dogs living above her. As Seth's lies begin to catch up to him, Holly toys with his emotions and his certainty of the situation falls apart. A bloody psychological battle begins where the line between prey and predator, victim and criminal blurs, leaving a deadly trail along the way.

If that read like it could be a little disturbing...wait until you see the trailer.

The film hits select theaters and VOD on December 2nd. Looks like one to check out! Do you agree?
