Tom Holland Says SPIDER-MAN Sequel Talks are Happening and Joining The Avengers Again Is Still Up in the Air

Once Marvel and Sony struck a deal with Spider-Man and we saw him in Captain America: Civil War, I thought that he was 100% a part of the MCU and that we would see him return in the upcoming Avengers films. Not so fast.

While at the New York Film Festival premiere of his latest movie, The Lost City of Z, Holland talked about it and said that's still to be determined. He told Variety:

“It’s all up in the air. I believe some sort of deal is in the mix, but I’m unclear as to what that deal is.”

So maybe the deal that was originally made was for Civil War and the development of the solo films like Spider-Man: Homecoming? Now a new deal has to be struck for any future involvement in the Avengers films. I'm sure we'll end up seeing him in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, but I just thought maybe the deal to appear in those films were already solidified. I guess not!

In a separate interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Holland was asked about his upcoming film projects, and he revealed that conversations were already happening regarding a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. He said,

“My next project, I can’t tell you about, but we’ve just finished ‘Spider-Man’ and we’re talking about the second one and who the villain is going to be and where we’re going,”

That's as much info as you're going to get about the sequel at this point. I've extremely curious to see how exactly Spider-Man evolves in the MCU. It's going to be a lot of fun to watch the character grow over the next ten years just like we've seen with Iron Man, Captain America, and the rest of the Avengers team.

Jon Bernthal Says Punisher Would Beat Batman in a Fight, Plus New PUNISHER Set Photos

Seeing Punisher go toe to toe with Batman in a fight would be a pretty badass brawl. Both are extremely skilled vigilantes, but each has different ethics when it comes to getting the job done and taking lives.

A video recently surfaced of actor Jon Bernthal doing a Q&A at New York Comic-Con, and one of the questions was who would win in a fight between Punisher and Batman and before the question could even be finished, Bernthal answered with Punisher.

It's really not surprising that that would be his answer, after all, he does play Punisher. If he were playing Batman, then his answer would have most likely been Batman. But it's a good question for all of us. Who do you think would win a fight?

I love both characters so much, but The Punisher is willing to do things that Batman isn't, which kind of gives him the edge. Batman could certainly slow him down, but in the end, Punisher has the grit and insanity needed to take down Batman if he wanted to. What do you think?

Also! Some new photos from the set of the series The Punisher have surfaced online that you can see below the video of Bernthal answering questions. In the photos we see Frank Castle hiding out as he makes contact with Karen Page.

Captivating First Trailer For Werner Herzog's Volcano Documentary INTO THE INFERNO

Werner Herzog has one of those voices where he could describe an old man taking a nasty dump and bring you to tears by the time he's done talking about it. Typically I would take a hard pass at a volcano documentary unless I couldn't find the remote, but Herzog is the selling point of Into The Inferno

Herzog is one of the greatest storytellers of our time, and in a short trailer, he manages to take something we've known about since we were children and impart a mythos behind the natural wonder. In addition to Herzog's voice, the cinematography is astounding! I'm hoping this one gets released in 4K!

Watch the trailer and catch the documentary on Netflix starting on October 28th.

Mashup Artist POGO Creates Incredible Song Using STAR TREK: TNG Audio

You may remember Pogo from the string of Disney remixes he did in the late 2000s. His most notorious mashup of Alice In Wonderland has been viewed over 17,000,000 times alone (and probably more using youuutube) and he's had several other mashups around the million view mark.

After a brief break, Pogo seems to be back to making content, and I can't possibly love this awesome Star Trek: TNG mashup enough! Here's his description of the song and the audio tracks he pulled for this song:

Temba, his arms wide! In Tamarian this signifies the giving of a gift, first heard in the excellent episode Darmok. Data & Picard is my tribute to one of the greatest TV series of all time. It is an original track featuring the voices of Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Commander Data (Brent Spiner), accompanied by a music video I shot entirely in my living room with a green screen and lights.

The track opens with the Klingon Victory Song, followed by a remix of Data singing Che Gelida Manina in the episode 'In Theory'. This episode was the first ever to be directed by Patrick Stewart and I didn't realize this until after the track was finished.

I've listened to this four times since I started writing about it, and I think I'm gonna watch some TNG later today just because of this video. Great work, Pogo — let's have some more stuff like it!

And here's the Alice in Wonderland video, since I talked about it earlier:

John Carpenter Hasn't Been Contacted About The BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA Remake

John Carpenter says he has yet to be contacted for any assistance regarding the Big Trouble In Little China reboot. Screen Rant recently spoke to the original director about the film and the conversation went down like so:

Screen Rant: There’s definitely been a lot of renewed interest in both properties, not just in comics. We’re also hearing about a remake of Big Trouble in Little China, with The Rock…

John Carpenter: [laughs] I know! It might be crazy… it might be great! I don’t know. Nobody’s told me anything. No one tells me anything [laughs]

Screen Rant: That’s unfortunate to hear. The Rock had said, supposedly, that he was interested in having you involved in some way – but there’s been no outreach so far?

John Carpenter: No. No one’s talked to me about it. Haven’t heard a thing!

Screen Rant: That’s very interesting.

John Carpenter: Yeah – isn’t it great?

You would imagine The Rock (who was the highest paid actor of 2016) would be able to twist a couple of arms to make this happen. It's a shame Carpenter has been shut out thus far, considering his contribution is what made the original a cult classic.

Not too many fans wanted this film to happen to begin with. I don't imagine this news will sway them any further. It sounds like Carpenter wants to be involved, but of course, we don't know the full story. Perhaps Carpenter's consultation comes with a high price tag, or maybe Johnson spoke out of turn in saying he wanted Carpenter involved. Are you concerned with the new film's development without Carpenter to give his two cents?

Lucasfilm Sues Lightsaber Academy For Trademark Infringement

$

This isn't the lawsuit they were looking for. According to THR, Disney and Lucasfilm have filed a lawsuit against Michael Brown, the operator of businesses like Lightsaber Academy and New York Jedi. The Lightsaber Academy, described as "a consortium of lightsaber practitioners with a culmination of 50 years experience of teaching various swordplay techniques," teaches customers core principles of fighting with lightsabers in a range of different methods, including for "Academic Form, Stage, and/or Dueling."

Disney is complaining about trademark infringement, and in part their suit says that Brown "regularly use[s] the Lucasfilm Trademarks without authorization in connection with their businesses." If you take a look at the logo on the top of the Lightsaber Academy website, it certainly looks familiar, and it's obvious that they're playing on iconography that belongs to Disney/Lucasfilm to entice customers and make their money. And from the sound of it, the Mouse House gave these guys a few chances to save themselves, but they didn't comply:

Lucasfilm says it has served multiple cease notices, and that the Brown has responded by filing a trademark application for "Lightsaber Academy, Inc."
The plaintiff now demands a permanent injunction, actual damages and profits, or alternatively, up to $2 million in statutory damages for each trademark infringed.

I'm sure Brown and the people at Lightsaber Academy are hoping that if Disney strikes them down, they shall become more powerful than they could possibly imagine, but the Force is strong with Disney's legal department, so we'll see how this shakes out. I'm guessing Brown and company will fold pretty quickly.

This May Be The Best Homemade Tauntaun Costume in The Galaxy

Looking for a great Halloween costume idea? Let this little boy be your inspiration, because his kick-ass tauntaun costume is one of the best Star Wars-related costumes I've seen in a long time. LaughingSquid points us to the Instagram account of artist Clint Case, who spent four months creating this awesome costume for his son for Halloween. It looks just like Luke Skywalker riding a tauntaun from the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back!

Nearly done. Now on to the fur. #halloween #costume #tauntaun #starwars #handmade #bitoffmorethanicanchew

The best part is you can see it in action in the video below, and it looks great! If I had the time and energy to create my own Halloween costume, this would be a terrific choice.

LOGAN Photo: Two Photos of Stephen Merchant's Caliban (Updated)

Updated: Merchant took to Instagram to share a photo of himself in costume, which we've embedded at the bottom of this post. Original article continues.

As we anxiously await a trailer for Logan, Hugh Jackman's final film as Wolverine, we've been scouring the stream of official photos being released for any clues about what we can expect from this last adventure. Not long ago, we heard a rumor that actor Stephen Merchant (the British Office, HBO's Hello Ladies) would be playing the mutant Caliban, and now a new photo from director James Mangold seems to back that up. Check out the pic:

For those who aren't familiar with the comics, Caliban has the ability to sense other mutants within 25 miles of him, and occasionally has superhuman strength and the power to absorb fear from those around him and amplify it back out into his environment. The character appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse in an underground bunker in Cairo (Psylocke was his bodyguard), but Logan takes place just over forty years after the events of that film. This franchise has always had a screwy timeline, so it seems as if this is another instance where they thought, "Screw it — let's put this character in there anyway."

Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.

A friend sent us this sweet Sword Art Online fan film that we think deserves some love! "Beta Test" takes place during the beta to the game that would eventually capture tens of thousands of users within its world.

There's no Kirito to be found here, just some players having a good old-fashioned PvP battle. The sword work is pretty good and the special effects are in line with the show's quality. Check it out below and follow Arnhem Pictures on YouTube!

It's Possible Kevin Feige is Hinting at The Defenders Showing Up in THE AVENGERS Sequels

Since Marvel's Netflix shows were announced, fans have had one huge question: will The Defenders appear on the big screen alongside The Avengers to battle Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War or its sequel? We still don't have a definitive answer for that (and I suspect we may not until Infinity War actually comes out), but there's a chance Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige could be, possibly, vaguely, maybe hinting at their inclusion.

In a new interview promoting the upcoming release of Doctor Strange, Feige told IGN:

"There's a reason we have publicly called the first one 'Infinity War' and the second one 'Untitled,' because the movies we were developing were not -- certainly there's a connection, there are with all our movies -- but it's not a first part and a second part. It's a whole movie and a whole story, and then a whole movie and a whole story. That's about all I can say...
"We will be intercutting a lot of stories in that movie in a lot of different locales, as it sort of is in the Avengers movies as well; who is facing off against who. In this movie, it's going to be fun to mix that up. One of the things that's great about the Infinity Gauntlet is everybody tried to go up against Thanos whether they were god-like powers or not, because that's what Avengers do. The fun about those two movies that we're doing essentially at the same time is everybody's there."

When specifically asked whether The Defenders would be included, he simply said, "Spoilers!"

If you actually read the text of his answer, it seems fairly clear to me that Feige is specifically talking about the members of the Avengers who don't have god-like powers, like Black Widow and Hawkeye, as the ones going up against Thanos. But his "Spoilers!" response seems to technically leave the door open as a non-denial, so fans can still have a little bit of hope that this could come to pass.

The question, of course, is whether fans actually want this to happen, or whether they just think they want it. A movie is a lot different than the pages of a comic book, and as we've seen in Age of Ultron and to a lesser degree in Civil War, things can get a little bogged down in a film with so many characters to juggle. The cast list for these Avengers movies would be daunting enough without the inclusion of The Defenders, so adding them into the mix could very well be the difference between having a movie that feels too overstuffed and disjointed and one that barely holds together.

As the title suggests, if you've come to see some Thermite melt through a computer hard drive, you've come to the right place. Thermite is often featured in the action films for its ability to melt locks and stuff. While that sounds like some movie magic, it's actually a real thing and it's pretty good at melting most metal material. See it in action below.

Intriguing Trailer For HBO's Star-Studded Limited Series BIG LITTLE LIES

$

As the network basks in the current success of Westworld and gears up for more Game of Thrones, it's clear HBO can't rest on its laurels if it wants to stay competitive in the television space these days. With Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu firmly established as key players in that arena (not to mention cable and all of the other premium channels), we're in the middle of an all-out brawl for networks trying to lock down talent for new shows. But HBO still has some pedigree, and it looks like they've been able to attract a star-studded cast and a flashy director for its new limited series.

The network has released the trailer for Big Little Lies, a limited series directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) that stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard, Adam Scott, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz. It's based on the best-selling book of the same name, and that book's synopsis goes like this:

Sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal...
A murder…a tragic accident…or just parents behaving badly?
What’s indisputable is that someone is dead. But who did what?
Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).

Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.

New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.

That's an interesting premise, but the trailer makes it look like the show itself is elevated to another level:

Obviously, anyone can cut a great trailer for just about anything, so we'll see if this one lives up to its potential when it debuts sometime in 2017.

Someone Cut All of The ROGUE ONE Trailers Together into a Chronological Mega-Trailer

As I mentioned in our first episode of NewsTyrant Radio on Friday, I was a little iffy about Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but seeing the most recent trailer really sold me on the idea that there might actually be a true creative reason to tell this story and not just a corporate one.

That trailer is pretty great, and now GameSpot has taken the liberty of collecting all of the trailer footage we've seen so far and editing it into a "chronological" mega-trailer. I put "chronological" in quotes because A) they're just going on the same information the rest of us have, so they're not technically sure what order this stuff happens, and B) there are a few shots that I don't necessarily agree with as far as their placement goes in the timeline. Regardless, this is the best representation we've seen so far of what the actual movie could feel like (albeit in an obviously shortened version), so I'm interested to hear what you all think about watching these clips all together like this.

THE BOSS BABY Trailer: Yep, Alec Baldwin Voices a Mysterious Baby

Alec Baldwin has been making headlines with his impression of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, but it's been a long time since he's headlined a mainstream movie all by himself. He's spent the past fifteen years or so transitioning from leading man to character actor, and now it looks like he's jumping back into animation for The Boss Baby, a new movie from DreamWorks Animation that I'm honestly having trouble believing is real.

The premise is simple: a young boy has a great family life, but it's upended when a baby (Baldwin) arrives. You've seen that premise a bunch of times before, and it's almost exactly the same setup as The Secret Life of Pets. Might as well call this one The Secret Life of Babies, because it's soon revealed that this kid isn't who he claims to be.

I'm sure Seth McFarlane will raise an eyebrow when he sees this, because it sure looks like this movie is essentially ripping off Stewie from Family Guy. Sure, Stewie wasn't the first talking baby that was wiser than his age (I'm instantly reminded of Baby Herman from Who Framed Roger Rabbit), but Stewie has become such a cultural touchstone over the past decade-plus that anything remotely resembling that is instantly going to call him to mind. We'll see if The Boss Baby (I can't believe that's the real title) will be able to overcome the comparison when it arrives in theaters on March 31, 2017.

ROGUE ONE Characters Face The Death Star in New Batch of Posters

Disney and Lucasfilm have unveiled the first batch of character posters for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and they feature members of the Rebellion and the Empire with the blueprints of the Death Star projected on their faces. I don't know about you, but I think these are much cooler than the far more generic poster the studio released for the movie the other day. I could easily imagine one of these looking great hung up on a wall in someone's house. The digital-looking schematics superimposed over their faces makes for a striking, compelling image.

What do you all think about these?

GAME OF THRONES Director Alex Graves To Direct Sony's Live-Action MULAN Movie

$
0
0

Disney is gearing up for its live-action remake of Mulan, but Sony Pictures is developing one too, and that one has just found its director. Deadline reports that TV director Alex Graves will helm the new movie, which tells the classic story of a young girl who takes her father's place in the Imperial Army.

You may not recognize Graves' name, but you've definitely seen his work. He's the guy who directed Game of Thrones episodes like "The Mountain and The Viper," and "The Children," and he's directed TV shows like House of Cards, The West Wing, Bloodline, Homeland, and many more. He's undoubtedly a talented director, but time will tell if he's the right choice for this project (or whether Sony should be developing this project at all, considering it's so closely associated with Disney). While Disney's version already has a 2018 release date scheduled, Deadline says the Sony film's "pace won't necessarily be determined by progress on the Disney film," so instead of this being a The Prestige/The Illusionist example wherein both movies arrive in theaters very close together, this could end up being more like a Disney Jungle Book vs. WB Jungle Book scenario, in which one comes out years ahead of the other.

In any case, this is a Chinese co-production and will have a Chinese lead, so hopefully we don't have to worry about whitewashing in this project, either. It's sad that it's 2016 and we're still not 100% sure there won't be whitewashing involved for some of this film's other roles. But as we've seen with Exodus: Gods and Kings and countless other examples over the years, studios are too often content with trotting out the excuse of needing recognizable, A-list celebrities to sell a movie to audiences instead of presenting them with new talent that could potentially become A-list stars after appearing in their movie.
