Kevin Feige Explains Where BLADE Currently Stands With Marvel

$

One of the first great modern comic book movies to be made was 1998's Blade with Wesley Snipes. Most people tend to credit Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, but it was really Blade that started the journey of modern superhero films. That movie was badass!

I'd love to see Blade make a comeback at Marvel Studios! There's no doubt that they'd do something awesome with the character. Apparently, a while back the producers of the Underworld franchise tried to set up a crossover film that would include Blade. Marvel told them no because they were planning something with the character. During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was asked about this, and he explained where Blade currently stands with the studio, saying:

"They did ask a long time ago, and I think our answer was, 'No, we'll do something with Blade at some point.' That's still the answer. We think he's a great character, a really fun character. You know, this movie [Doctor Strange] going into a different side of the universe has fun potential for him to pop up, and between the movies, the Netflix shows, the ABC shows, there's so many opportunities for the characters to show up -- as you're all seeing now with Ghost Rider on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. -- that rather than team-up with other studios with that character, we'll do something cool on our own. What that is and what that will be? We'll see. There is nothing imminent to my knowledge... of course, he shows up in the next episode (laughs)."

If Marvel does do anything with Blade, I think it would work best at a Netflix series so they can actually play with the darkness of the character. With the movies and the ABC series, they'd be much more limited on what they can do, and Blade is definitely a character who doesn't need limitations. So hopefully a Netflix series is they way they decide to go with it.

CAPTAIN MARVEL Confirmed to Tell the Hero's Origin Story

I'm excited to see what Marvel has planned for their Captain Marvel film. They already got a great actress, Brie Larson, set to play the role, and the script for the film is currently being developed by screenwriters Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out).

During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege was asked about Captain Marvel, and he revealed that it will completely tell the origin story of Carol Danvers' road to becoming Captain Marvel. He said:

"[Black] Panther is not really an origin story, since we saw him already in Civil War. But his standalone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world that you never saw. And Captain Marvel is certainly an origin. It's an origin story from the start."

When previously talking about the film, Perlman talked about their plans for the film and said that this origin story will not be the same origin story from the comics because it is too close to the origin of Green Lantern. She explains:

"I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”

In the comics, Danvers is saved by a Kree warrior named Mar-Vell after a Kree machine explodes and exposes her to Kree radiation. In the process Danvers is infused with Mar-Vell's superhuman powers such as super strength, speed, and the ability to fly. There's no information on what her new origin will be, but I'm sure Marvel and their creative team have come up with something that fans will embrace.

Captain Marvel hits theaters on July 6th, 2018.

Newly-Announced CLUE Stage Play Adaptation Will Tour The Country

It wasn't long ago that we heard 20th Century Fox is rolling the dice on a film remake of Clue, the 1985 cult classic murder mystery comedy based on the beloved board game. But now Variety reports that Jonathan Lynn, the writer/director of the '85 film, has written a stage play adaptation and is bringing it to regional theater next year before the play embarks on a nationwide tour.

This project reportedly came to happen through a partnership between a company called the Araca Group (Wicked) and toy/game company Hasbro, who apparently also have a musical in the works based on another board game, Monopoly. Plans are being made for a United States tour as well as touring in the United Kingdom, but no Broadway run is planned at this point. They're still so far away from launching that we don't have any casting news yet, but we'll keep you posted if anything more interesting pops up in regards to this project. To the Clue-lovers among you — and really, that should be all of you, because that movie is great — what do you think about this? Would you pay to see a live stage play version of the show in person?

THE TINGLER: Fun 1950s Horror Movies to Watch During Halloween

Vincent Price starred in a ton of B horror movies throughout the course of his career. From the films he made in the ’50s, most people are familiar with The House on Haunted Hill, The Fly, and House of Wax, which are all films I enjoy watching during the Halloween seasons. They’re fantastic movies that have coincidentally all been remade over the years. But the film I wanted to focus on in this next installment of "Fun 1950s Horror Movies to Watch During Halloween" is the actor’s 1959 film, The Tingler

The Tingler doesn't seem like it’s as popular as the other films he’s made. Whenever I bring it up with certain friends, family, and other people, I’m almost always met with a perplexed look on their face, like they’ve never heard of the movie before! I’m sure many of you are familiar with it, but if you’re not, this is for you — you’ve got to watch this movie!

The story follows a pathologist by the name of Dr. Warren Chapin (Price) who regularly conducts autopsies on executed prisoners at the State prison. Chapin has an interesting theory that fear is the result of a creature that lives inside us. According to his theory, the creature, which he calls the Tingler, is suppressed by our ability to scream when fear strikes us. He ends up testing this theory when he meets Ollie and Martha Higgins, who own and operate a small movie theater. Martha is deaf and mute and if she is unable to scream, extreme fear should make the creature come to life and grow. Of course, he uses LSD to induce the nightmares as he begins his experiment.

The movie was directed by William Castle (House on Haunted Hill), who was also a film marketing genius. He is known for his movie gimmicks, and for this film he implemented what he called “Percepto!” in which he had attached electrical buzzers under some of the seats in select movie theaters where the movie was screening. During the climax of the film, The Tingler was “depicted escaping into a movie theater. On screen, the projected film appeared to break as the silhouette of the Tingler moved across the projection beam. The film went black, all lights in the auditorium (except fire exit signs) went off, and Vincent Price's voice warned the audience ‘Ladies and gentlemen, please do not panic. But scream! Scream for your lives! The Tingler is loose in this theater!’ This cued the theater projectionist to activate the buzzers, giving some audience members an unexpected jolt, followed by a highly visible physical reaction.” (Everything in quotations comes courtesy of Wikipedia.)

the-tingler-fun-1950s-horror-movies-to-watch-during-halloween22

I wish they would do that kind of stuff today! That would be fun to be unexpectedly buzzed during an intense moment of the movie! They used to have a lot of fun stuff like that in the ’50s. My dad talked about it all the time and how scary it was for him. Then to enhance the climax of the film even more, the director hired actors who were planted in the audience to scream and faint during the movie. There were also fake nurses hanging out in the lobby of the theater would rush in to carry the people that fainted out and put them into a fake ambulance outside. The actors would then return for the next screening of the film and do it all over again. Seems like that would have been such a cool experience!

The Tingler was filmed in black-and-white, but there actually is a short color sequence that was edited into the film to achieve a fun effect. The scene was made to look black and white except for some flowing red blood. The scene featured a sink with bright red "blood" flowing from the taps. It also included a Judith Evelyn in black and white watching a bloody red hand rising from a bathtub filled with bright red blood. In order to achieve the effect, Castle had the set painted white, black, and gray and they also applied gray makeup to the actress to simulate monochrome. Then he shot the film in color, which is how they got the blood to be red. There was a lot of work and time put into achieving that effect...now, it’s easy!

This is such a great and incredibly fun film and if you haven’t seen it, now is the perfect time to watch it! It’s on several of the streaming services and I embedded it for you below along with the original trailer.

Clint Eastwood Developing Movie About Captured Aid Worker Jessica Buchanan

Clint Eastwood is developing a movie based on the true events of rescued aid worker Jessica Buchanan, according to THR. Buchanan was an American doing aide work in Somalia when she was captured by pirates and held for ransom. She was saved 93 days later when the American government stepped in and rescued her using the help of Seal Team 6.

Brian Helgeland, who worked with Eastwood on Mystic River, will be writing the script. The script itself will be based on the memoir from the book "Impossible Odds," which was written in part by Buchanan and her husband.

Who would think that at the age of 86, Clint Eastwood would be just as active in Hollywood as he was in his prime!? You have to respect the guy's work ethic.

Michelle Williams to Play Janis Joplin in Long-Gestating Biopic

$

Hollywood has been trying to get a Janis Joplin biopic off the ground for a long time, with the most recent attempt coming from Lee Daniels (The Butler) with Amy Adams in the lead role. Like so many other versions, that project ended up never happening, but now a new configuration has emerged and it looks like this one's going to go the distance.

THR reports that Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) is in early negotiations to star as the '60s musician in a movie called Janis for director Sean Durkin, who helmed the unnerving cult-centric film Martha Marcy May Marlene a few years ago. Williams is about to start shooting Hugh Jackman's musical The Greatest Showman on Earth, in which she'll also have to sing, so that could be a nice warm-up for the intense vocal work she'll probably end up doing in this film. Durkin's script is reportedly based on a book written by Joplin's sister, so I imagine the production won't have any trouble gaining rights to Janis's music for this film (that's always a key element in music biopics).

After a quick rise to fame and only releasing three albums, Jopin died in 1970 at the age of 27 from a heroin overdose. She consistently ranked as one of the best musical artists of all time by prominent publications like Rolling Stone, and she left a lasting impact on generations of artists who followed her.

It's Nerf or nothing in this over-the-top short by Nukazooka that imagines a world war where Nerf guns are the primary weaponry! You'll see rifles, shotguns, the big mortar ones, and a giant Nerf-style tank, which is the coolest shit I've ever seen in my life. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but this is an incredibly well done short that's worth your time.

George Takei Says New STAR TREK Films Are Just "Surface Entertainment"

$

When it comes to Star Trek films, George Takei prefers the stories of Gene Roddenberry over the new films. The actor spoke to Radio Times and said he feels the original show and films have an added dimension of depth, and the new films are just "surface entertainment."

"With Gene Roddenberry's shows you can see beyond the surface action-adventure, the surface humour and entertainment. You were able to also guess at 'Oh, that's what they're talking about: it's the Cold War or it's climate change'. Star Trek IV [The Voyage Home] was not just about our flashing back in time to San Francisco in the 20th century, it was about the key role that whales play in our environmental chain. That is what made Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek so enriching and so challenging – you look for that additional dimension. With the rebooted films, it's just that surface entertainment."

That's a true statement, but have times changed? Trying to make a political statement with your films anymore only seems to cause unrest. By the time your film hits theaters, there will have been so many editorials, behind the scenes banter, and commentary that people have made up their mind before they even see the film! I'm not sure the new Star Trek series would be better served by making whatever "statement" Takei thinks the first films made.

I will agree that the films are skin deep in some regard. Not having a television series to spin off from forces all the introduction, development, and attachment of characters into under eight hours of cinema. That's a big disadvantage considering how well established the other Star Trek crew was on television before their films.

What's your take? Does Takei have a point, or do you think he's just one of the old guard defending his work?

LOGAN: More Roles Revealed For Wolverine's Final Adventure

logan-more-roles-revealed-for-wolverines-final-adventure-social.jpg

We've learned a lot about Logan since the film received its official title a few days ago. We've seen a page of the script, some images teasing the R-rating, a picture of an old-ass Professor X, a couple of plot details, and which villain he'll be going up against. Now The Wrap is here with some more information about some of the film's characters.

The outlet's sources tell them that the young girl seen in the teaser poster is named "Laura," and she'll be — as we all suspected and has been reported for months — the young mutant X-23. The new news is that she's reportedly being played by Sienna Novikov in her first big role.

The second piece of info they share is that Richard E. Grant's mad scientist character is the head of Transigen (the company turning mutant kids into killers) and his character is named Dr. Zander Rice. From The Wrap:

In the Marvel comics, Dr. Rice was the surgical head of the project which created X-23. Dale Rice, Zander’s father, worked on the original Weapon X Project where he was killed by an escaping Wolverine as he fled with a briefcase full of information about the project. Years later, Zander — now called Dr. Rice — became the surgical head on a project to recreate the Weapon X procedure.

Their final bit of info claims that despite Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg saying on the commentary track of X-Men: Apocalypse that Mr. Sinister would next appear in Logan, Mr. Sinister won't appear in the movie after all — at least in the main story, anyway. The site leaves the door open for the possibility that Sinister could appear in a post-credits sequence.

Long thought by fans to be an adaptation of the Old Man Logan comic story, it seems as if this movie won't actually share that much in common with that specific comic after all. What do you make of all this? Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.

Watch: Mesmerizing Stop-Motion LEGO Death Star Build Video

I don't personally have much time to build LEGO sets these days, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the effort and ingenuity it takes to create a video like this one from Bart van Dijk. This cool stop-motion video shows how Dijk constructed a Death Star set comprised of over 4,000 pieces, and I can't remember ever seeing a LEGO video quite this smooth before. It's almost primordial how the Death Star forms before our eyes, seemingly evolving and rising up from nothing as it morphs and takes shape. Pretty freakin' sweet, if you ask me.

Matt Reeves "Absolutely" Has Ideas About What Happens After WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

$

When Rise of the Planet of the Apes came out back in 2011, expectations were insanely low. A prequel to one of the most iconic science fiction films of all time seemed like little more than a cash grab by the studio. But director Rupert Wyatt surprised everyone and crafted a legitimately great blockbuster with heart, soul, action, and character, and made me very excited about the future of the franchise.

Director Matt Reeves came in and did an excellent job with the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and though he and producer Dylan Clark have War for the Planet of the Apes brewing now, they just said in an interview with /Film that they "absolutely" have ideas about where the story goes beyond the upcoming movie. And if you're thinking, "Wait, we already know how this ends," Reeves has fully embraced that aspect of this saga:

Because we know that that’s the ending, that it becomes Planet of the Apes, the cool thing about what was started in Rise is, that it’s no longer about what happens. It’s about how it happens. And stories about how are always about character and psychology. So in our minds, the idea that’s the end of the story gives us the chance to tell an epic saga that leads from where Caesar began in Rise to that world. It’s not about getting there and then redoing that story. We think it’s like a great Russian novel or something, and it’s all about following Caesar on that journey and the other apes as it builds along that way.
And you know the ending, but what you do know is also that the world is not that world. So how did it change? Caesar’s apes are not like the apes in the Planet of the Apes, right? They’re very brutal to the humans. That’s not what’s going on, so how did that happen? And you know that Caesar had such integrity, and that he has this sort of sense of right and wrong, of his morality, yet you watch that be challenged. He ends up having to kill one of his own. All of those things give us a chance to explore human nature and do it in a way that is really fun. ‘Cause these are all, frankly, totally new stories. We’re not doing any stories that were done.

It's almost exactly the same as the argument I've seen pop up about knowing spoilers ahead of time in movies. The argument is that for truly good movies that don't rely on gimmicks, the destination shouldn't matter nearly as much as the journey itself. I'm sort of torn about that because I feel like there are some movies with surprise twists that enhance the journey and would take away from your enjoyment if you knew them ahead of time, but I get what he's saying here.

So what happens after War for the Planet of the Apes? “We absolutely have ideas about where it goes,” Reeves told the site. It seems like the filmmaker is content with staying in the same cinematic universe to explore what he wants to say about the human condition, much like James Cameron with his Avatar movies. Greedily, as a film fan, I'd love to see an original project from Reeves, but at the same time, he's been killin' it with these Apes movies so far, so I'm glad to see him continue to bring those to life as long as they keep providing him with material he's able to dig into and get inspired by.

Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch play father and son in the creepy, contained horror thriller The Autopsy of Jane Doe, and EW has the first trailer. In the video, we see the two of them examine a body of an unknown woman, and almost immediately, eerie, unsettling things start to happen and things go south. The movie won Best Horror Feature at this year's Fantastic Fest — and considering the type of gorehounds and horror-loving crowds that festival attracts, that award should say a lot about this movie's quality.

Beware: the trailer should be considered NSFW because there's a naked dead girl on an autopsy table. André Øvredal (Trollhunter) directed this one, and it hits theaters on December 21, 2016.

It's all about movie titles, and points out some examples of filmmakers using the actual title card of the film in a clever or thought-provoking way, from Joss Whedon's Avengers (answering a character's question) to Saul Bass's iconic Alfred Hitchcock movie intros setting the stage for the type of story we're about to see.
