Challenge Your Friends to Join "International Fight With a Lightsaber Day" — #LightsaberFight

Last year, GeekTyrant started "International Fight With a Lightsaber Day." We had participation from 33 countries and a social reach of over 5 million in only eight days. Check out some of the fun of last year, if you haven't already. The big reason this new geek holiday was so successful is because of all the GeekTyrant readers who helped share the holiday by challenging their friends in the days leading up to October 10th, and we're gearing up for the second annual celebration this year.

Spread the Word
/ Make The Challenge

Take a photo of yourself brandishing a lightsaber, tag your friends and family on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and challenge them to a lightsaber duel on October 10th. Use #LightsaberFight to keep the madness organized and get your photo(s) retweeted or shared by GeekTyrant.

I tagged family and friends in other countries and states that I knew were Star Wars fans, and they in turn did the did the same. It was really cool to see all those lightsabers in my social feed that week.

How to Participate
on October 10th

Get into a lightsaber fight and take a photo, shoot a video, or even better, livestream it and use #LightsaberFight. Some readers last year created flash mobs, challenged random people on the street (be safe), and held lightsaber fight parties on the day. GeekTyrant had a huge battle in our office parking lot with about 75 people, and this year should be even more epic!

We've got more things to announce about "International Fight With a Lightsaber Day" coming soon — May The Force Be With You!

JUDGE DREDD Co-Creator Says That Fox Passed on a JUDGE DEATH Movie

Since Dredd was released in 2012 fans have been wanting to see a sequel. There hasn't been much movement on it, but Karl Urban, Alex Garland, and the rest of the crew would like to see the story continue just as badly as the fans. There's recently been a lot of talk regarding the story continuing as a Netflix series, only time will tell if that happens. Judge Dredd co-creator John Wagner says that one day a sequel will happen, and also reveals that Fox turned down a Judge Death film that Garland pitched to them!

While celebrating 2000 AD’s 2000th Issue Celebration, Screen Geek talked to Wagner and this is what he had to say about a sequel:

"Well, there will be a sequel, I just don’t know when or who’ll do it but it’ll happen. It would work very well as a television show – it just depends on how it’s done. It could work very as a film. I mean – everyone wants to see Judge Death, don’t they?"

He then goes on to talk about the Judge Death script that Fox passed on:

"I wouldn’t mind seeing [Judge Death]. That was actually the first script that Alex Garland did was a Judge Death script but Fox, who they were dealing with at the time, turned it down. They wanted more nuts and bolts before they went into the [metaphysical]."

I'd love to see a film that centers around Judge Death! He's such a crazy character that it would make for one hell of an insane movie. Hopefully it will happen when or if the Dredd franchise picks up momentum again.

If you're not really that familiar with the character, he's the leader of the Dark Judges, "a sinister group of undead law enforcers from the alternate dimension of Deadworld, where all life has been declared a crime since only the living commit crimes."

Every Easter Egg, Cameo, and Reference in Marvel's LUKE CAGE

If you're still in the middle of watching Marvel's Luke Cage, you probably won't want to watch this video from Mr. Sunday Movies because it will spoil a few things for you. If you've already watched the entire series, then check it out because it points out all of the Easter eggs, cameos, and references in the Netflix series.

Marvel did an incredible job bringing Luke Cage to life the way they did. It was an extremely well-made series, and I don't think it could've been any better. It's hard to catch everything while watching a series like this because there's so much going on, but thanks to this video it all gets pointed out to us.

The Luke Cage Netflix is packed with Easter Eggs and References that are linked to Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and The Defenders. As well as hints towards other Marvel movies including The Avengers, Captain America, Thor and Iron man plus his origins, prominant comic book characters and a whole bunch of other things! It’s a real Easter Egg hunt or something. Thanks for watching.

New Plot Details for THOR: RAGNAROK Give The Title a Whole New Meaning

One of the reasons I'm so excited about Thor: Ragnarok is that there will be elements of Planet Hulk in it. That has been confirmed by Marvel, and we've even seen the armor that the Hulk will wear as a gladiator.

Turns out the Planet Hulk element may play a bigger part of the story than originally thought. Also, the title of the film may not mean what we think it means. If you don't want to learn any other details then I suggest you don't read any further.

According to Schmoes Know, who has a pretty solid track record of reporting legitimate info, the majority of the story will take place on a planet called Ragnarok. That is where Thor and Hulk will team up for their adventure. It's also the place they will meet other characters from the film. Here are the details from the report:

While on Ragnarok, Thor and Hulk end up having to fight their way out in the arenas. The arenas are run by The Grandmaster who has a rather tough enforcer named Skurge (Karl Urban) who plays a big part in the plot of the film. While fighting in the arenas Thor runs into the beautiful Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) a fellow contestant. The two earn each other’s respect and plot a way off the planet. Somehow, Skurge turns to the light and helps them escape. How this all unfolds is still a mystery.

Most of us believed that Ragnarok meant that they would be adapting the comic book storyline in which Asgard is destroyed and Thor is killed. That could still be the case, but judging from this information, it seems like a good amount of the story will focus on Thor and Hulk escaping the planet Ragnarok. The report goes on to suggest that the "very survival of Asgard depends" on their escape. Who knows what kind of trouble Loki has been up to since he slyly stepped into the shoes of Odin, but Hela is definitely involved.

Previous rumors about the film seem to fit what is going on here. This is some of the story information we reported a few months ago:

Cate Blanchett’s Hela will be joining forces with Tom Hiddleston's Loki to take over Asgard. After this happens, Chris Hemsworth's Thor is said to be exiled into deep space, in order to prevent his interference with their plans. It’s at this point that Thor would land on an alien planet where he would be imprisoned and forced into gladiatorial combat.
Thor obviously needs to escape so he can get back to Asgard to take it back from Hela and Loki. As he fights his way through one gladiatorial match after another, he comes face to face with the reigning champion…the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). You can imagine that at this point they eventually have to team up and escape together. The main mission of Thor is said to be that he needs to find the ultimate weapon to stop Ragnarok and reset the universe.

I just want to watch this movie already! It's being directed by Taika Waititi, and it's set to be released on November 3rd, 2017.

Zodiac Signs Reimagined as Terrifying Creatures

The signs of the zodiac have been the topic of discussion lately due some changes, and apparently some people who are really into their astrological signs are pissed off. Me personally? I could care less, but I’ve got a series of extremely awesome art created by Damon Hellandbrand that reimagines this zodiac signs as nightmarish monsters. In order, they are Scorpio (above), Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Capricorn. I really love the creature designs that the artist came up with for each of them. Check them out and let us know if you like the creature that represents your Zodiac sign.

New Photo From IRON FIST; Announcement Teaser Reveals Release Date

Marvel has released an official photo from their upcoming Netflix series Iron Fist, and it features Finn Jones as the title character about to offer a devastating blow to some thug's face. Also, if you look in the background you'll see a pile of bodies that it looks like he has plowed through. I have a feeling that Iron Fist will have some of the coolest fight scenes we've seen in the MCU yet.

They've also released an announcement teaser revealing that Iron Fist will premiere on March 17th, 2017... St. Patrick's Day! There's no actual footage in the teaser, but it's still cool that they gave fans something to help build the excitement.

Fifteen years after being presumed dead in a plane crash, Danny Rand (Finn Jones) mysteriously returns to New York City determined to reclaim his birthright and family company. However, when a long-destined enemy rises in New York, this living weapon is forced to choose between his family’s legacy and his duties as the Iron Fist.

The series also stars David Wenham Harold Meachum, the former business partner of Danny’s late parents. Jessica Stroup and Tom Pelphrey take on the roles of Joy and Ward Meachum, who are Harold’s kids and Danny’s childhood acquaintances. Jessica Henwick plays Colleen Wing, an ally of Danny’s who was teased near the end of Luke Cage. There's also Carrie-Anne Moss, reprising her role as Jeri Hogarth from Jessica Jones, and Rosario Dawson will be back as Claire Temple, who has been an incredible addition to these Netflix series.

Marvel's THE PUNISHER Has Started Production and We Have Set Photos with Jon Bernthal

Last month there was a report that actor Jon Bernthal had to cut his NYCC appearance short because he would be busy due to his Netflix shooting schedule. A lot of fans, including myself, speculated that he would be making an appearance in Iron Fist because according to previous reports, The Punisher wasn't supposed to start shooting until 2017.

Well, The Punisher has started shooting, and there are photos of Bernthal filming in Brooklyn to prove it. As you'd expect, he's looking tough as nails sporting a badass burly beard. It looks like he may be going through some rough times.

The last time we saw Frank Castle was in Daredevil season two; he's since let himself go a little. There could be a number of reasons why he looks the way he does. He's obviously in life survival mode, and it could be before he comes across Daredevil or after. You never know, they might go into some of his backstory.

It's awesome to see The Punisher is actually in production! I guess this means that it's definitely going to air after Iron Fist and before The Defenders. If it's shooting now, it will most likely air sometime in late 2017 or early 2018.

There are no details on the story, but you can bet we'll see The Punisher kicking some major ass again!

'80s Toy TEDDY RUXPIN Is Coming Back to Creep Out a New Generation of Kids

"Can you and I be friends?"

Hell no! I'm sure some of you remember the Teddy Ruxpin talking bear toy from the 1980s. The robotic bear would move its mouth and eyes along with the story that he was telling from a cassette tape that was shoved in his back. I always thought the thing was creepy as hell. It was one of the toys that inspired the horror movie Child's Play!  Now he's making a comeback to terrify a whole new generation of children!

LUKE CAGE Star Mahershala Ali in Talks to Star in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

Actor Mahershala Ali, who plays Cottonmouth in Marvel's Luke Cage may take on another villainous role. This time, it will be for producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez's sci-fi action film Alita: Battle Angel, which is gearing up to start production this month.

The actor is currently in talks with the studio, and if cast, he will join Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jackie Earl Haley, Ed Skrein, and Keann Johnson in the feature film adaptation of the manga graphic novels.

Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals.

According to THR, "Ali will play one of the movie’s villains, a man named Vector who runs and fixes matches in a gladiator-style combat game called Motorball."

Ali gave an incredible performance in Luke Cage, and he'd be a great choice to take on this new role. He has also appeared in House of Cards and is also in the upcoming film Hidden Figures.

Cameron Cuffe Cast as Superman's Grandpa in Syfy's KRYPTON

According to VarietyCameron Cuffe has been cast in the role of Seg El in the Syfy series Krypton. Seg-El was the father of Jor-El, and Superman's grandpa. Cuffe is new to the Hollywood scene, having recently made an appearance in the Meryl Streep film Florence Foster Jenkins.

This is Cameron Cuffe

This is Cameron Cuffe

Cuffe looks a little young for the age I expected Seg-El to be, so it would appear that Jor-El will not be present in this series unless he's an infant or something.

For those who may have forgotten, Krypton is the upcoming David Goyer drama highlighting the world of Krypton before it met its end. That's kind of confusing since the teaser picture of the show features the planet exploding, but I digress. The show will focus on the politics of Krypton and the competing "houses" of each Kryptonian family. For example, we already know the house of Zod will be featured in the series.

This show still seems far off before we see anything concrete from it, but I'm excited with each and every new detail that emerges! Let's hope it doesn't suck!

Any of you who grew up in the '80s know how much of a magical era it was. I loved the '80s — I loved the movies, the music, and even some of the ridiculous styles. Animator Gervais Merryweather has created an incredibly fun animated short that pays tribute to the '80s in the greatest of ways.

It's called Mall 84, the whole thing is set in a mall, and it's packed full of movie and pop culture references. It also does a great job reminding us what life was like with the clothing styles, setting, attitudes, and atmosphere. I loved this short and it definitely hits you with a wave of nostalgia. I hope you enjoy it!

Chevy Chase Playing a Foul-Mouthed Grandpa in FEDERAL OFFENSE

Chevy Chase is set to star as a foul-mouthed grandpa on the run in the film Federal Offense. THR reports the film will feature three best friends who are on the run after losing a drug kingpin's stash and breaking their grandfather out of his nursing home. The film is described as an "on the road" comedy.

Sounds like I've seen this film before, but I enjoy some Chevy Chase! His comedy is still good, even if he has been shown to be a less than desirable person off screen.

No release date for the film yet, but I'm sure we'll keep you posted on this one as it develops further.

New SWORD ART ONLINE Animated Film Releases Worldwide February 18th

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale will be simultaneously releasing worldwide on February 18, 2017. Anime News Network writes the animated film will screen in about 1,000 theaters around the world the day of its release, though it's still unclear exactly what that "simultaneous" release means (presumably it means it'll be available online as well, but we'll see).

The new film will be a one-off adventure featuring a new technology that allows users to play games using advanced AR technology. Kirito isn't a fan of the new tech as it forces him to use his real body, which isn't nearly as dominant as his virtual body.

The whole adventure looks to be loads more entertaining than the second season of the series. I know I'm not the only one who thought the show completely collapsed at that point, right? Check out a trailer for the new film below.

Google kicked off its keynote today with an original skit from the cast members of HBO's comedy Silicon Valley. In the clip, Dinesh gets excited for the Google Keynote, while Gilfoyle tells him that he already knows what's happening in the keynote because he was invited to the beta. It's one of the classic exchanges between the two that make the show so great, and believe it or not, it's not cheesy at all!

Ben Affleck Addresses Divisive BATMAN V SUPERMAN Response

It's sort of hard to believe that it's been less than seven months since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice came out. It feels like we're so far removed from that movie now since Suicide Squad has already come and gone and Justice League has almost wrapped filming, but in a new interview with Fox, Ben Affleck addressed the divisive response that the film received:

It’s interesting. It was a huge hit movie that so many more people went to see than any movie I’ve made in my career. It was the biggest hit of my career. And then it had a lot of editorial negativity — fans went, and I got a lot of positive response. It was interesting, that movie, because it was judged not necessarily on execution so much as its tone. People seemed to want to have a lighter tone to the movie, and I thought that was interesting because that’s subjective. Tone is not a qualitative thing. It’s subjective, right? Some tones resonate with me that might not with you. And the tone of the movie was really parallel to the Frank Miller book, which I liked and thought was great. I’m glad that so many people went and so many people liked the movie and it worked out.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with his statement about the tone of the film. Movies themselves are subjective, not necessarily the tone. The tone of the movie actually seems to be one of the things that most people agree about when it comes to Batman v Superman, but whether or not they enjoyed that particular tone is where the divisive response comes into play.

Look, I don't need to provide any more commentary on this topic. You've already made up your minds about how you feel about the movie, and nothing I say is going to sway anyone at this point. So feel free to jump into the comments and let us know what you think.
