Hideaki Anno Begins Work On EVANGELION Film

0
0

Now that he's done with the new Godzilla film, director Hideaki Anno can move onto the final Evangelion movie. Kotaku writes that Anno is apologetic to fans of Evangelion who have been waiting for an update:

“I’ll work hard [on it]. I mean, I’m already working hard [on it].”

Evangelion is a highly critically acclaimed series and seemingly loved by everyone who watches it. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I know we have at least a few readers who have been waiting for this movie!

There is no release date set yet for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, the fourth and final film in the series.

ONE PUNCH MAN is Getting a Second Season

0
0

One Punch Man has officially been signed on for a second season according to Anime News Network. For those unaware, the show is currently available on demand on Toonami on Adult Swim and airing weekly in its "Dub" form.

If you haven't watched the show, you need to check it out! I'm late to the game and just recently got in myself, and the show's mixture of comedy and action is just incredible! It seriously might be the funniest anime I've ever seen, and the animation is gorgeous.

I highlight the humor because based on all the pictures and cosplay I saw, I assumed this was a serious show. While it is pretty gory and action-heavy at times, the show manages to have a good amount of light moments that make for a great experience.

The show (which is based on the manga) centers around Saitama, who left the world of business three years ago to become a hero. After an intense training regimen, he went bald and became the world's strongest man. Turns out that can be pretty boring, and the show focuses on his journey trying to find a worthy opponent and gain notoriety as a hero.

See the trailer below and look out for season two! Unfortunately, there's no release date yet.

Sci-Fi Fantasy Film DUST Is One of the Best Shorts I've Ever Seen

0
0

"Dust" is one of the greatest short films that I've ever seen. This sci-fi fantasy adventure is off the charts in its level of awesomeness. The production value is insanely good, and the special effects are stunningly beautiful.

The short was inspired by anime and classic horror. The story is set in "a harsh and unpredictable natural environment where people have isolated themselves in an ancient city behind a massive wall. A socially marginalized tracker teams up with a black-market merchant to save the society that has rejected his way of life." The story is further described as follows:

Dust takes place in a world of rapid evolution. Each year new species and adaptations alter the balance of their ecosystems. Technology and deep tradition exist as symbiotic opposites dividing people who live in the countryside from those who live in walled cities. Amidst this cultural turmoil, nature offers up an unexpected challenge.

The short was directed by Mike Grier, who shot it in 11 days in abandoned rural areas of Japan. The project was funded by Kickstarter back in 2013, and as you'll see, he and his team did a hell of a job bring this story to life for audiences like you to enjoy.

I had the opportunity to see this film twice while it was making its way through the film festival circuit, and now that it's online, I can watch it whenever I want! This thing needs to be adapted into a feature film!

Marvel Has Already Filmed Stan Lee's Next Four Cameos

Stan Lee has already filmed his next four cameos in Marvel Studios films, according to Coming Soon. Kevin Feige said Lee flew into their production studio recently in Atlanta to film his cameos:

“We do not shoot random ones. They’re always very specific...A couple of months ago in Atlanta, he flew down and we shot four in one day — for four various projects. They’re all awesome! They’re all totally different. And he was unbelievable. He was on fire. He came in, he sat here, he stood there, he stood in this window, and then he went home.”

No word as to what Lee filmed, but I would imagine he's already done his appearance for Doctor Strange. What four movies do you think he's already filmed his cameo for?

That FRUIT NINJA Movie is Apparently Still Happening

0

With The Angry Birds Movie making tons of money at the box office and the ludicrously-named Emojimovie: Express Yourself looming in our near future, it seems like Hollywood executives are looking inside their phones for movie ideas. That pattern continued with an announcement a few months ago that Fruit Ninja would be turned into a new film, and now THR reports that New Line Cinema has acquired the film rights to the fruit slicing game. Sounds like this movie is really going to happen.

Tripp Vinson (San Andreas) is producing, while J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani (who wrote the upcoming film How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack) are writing the screenplay. The story "will revolve around a team of misfits who are recruited to become Fruit Ninjas in order to save the world." Sounds an awful lot like Adam Sandler's Pixels...so let's hope, for everyone's sake, that they stray as far from that template as possible and maybe even change the premise entirely before production gets underway. In the meantime, be sure to check out these Fruit Ninja in Real Life videos if you haven't seen them yet.

Video Explores What George Lucas' STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Would Have Looked Like

George Lucas has gone on record to say that he would never have made Star Wars films beyond the initial six. Before he was jaded by Hollywood (following his experience with the prequels), Lucas did seem to have a plan for a nine-part saga in the Star Wars universe. Taking a bit from an excerpt of an interview he gave back when the series was at its peak (post-Empire Strikes Back), Lucas had this to say:

"I'm just going to keep it pure. It's a nine part saga that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It progresses over a period of 50 to 60 years with about 20 years between trilogies, each trilogy taking 6 or 7 years.

That's just a taste of what Lucas had in store for what would've been his take on Episode VII, and Mr. Sunday Movies has the rest:

THE 13TH Trailer: Ava DuVernay Explores The Nation's Prison System in New Documentary

0
0

As a black female filmmaker in Hollywood, Ava DuVernay isn't afraid to tackle complex societal issues about race, gender, and politics in her work. She humanized Martin Luther King, Jr. in her terrific 2014 film Selma, and while she's about to direct a big studio movie for Disney (A Wrinkle in Time), before that, we'll see a new documentary project from her called The 13th.

The movie, which opens the New York Film Festival later this week and hits Netflix on October 7th, dives into America's prison system and a culture which has allowed for black people to be locked up for years, oftentimes unjustly. It's a hot-button topic, but one that definitely deserves some attention and is important for everyone to learn about, even if you don't agree with her specific stance here. Check out the trailer below.

The title of Ava DuVernay’s extraordinary and galvanizing documentary 13TH refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” The progression from that second qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalization and the sprawling American prison industry is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity. With a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from a dazzling array of activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men, DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.

Sam Neill Says He Hasn't Been Called To Appear in JURASSIC WORLD 2

If Alan Grant is appearing in Jurassic World 2, Sam Neill knows nothing of it. The actor confirmed as much to Slashfilm and speculated on what the former dinosaur expert could be up to:

“I think the problem is that no one knows where Alan Grant is anymore. He’s retired from paleontology. He’s sick to death of dinosaurs and running. He’s not quite as fleet of foot as he was, and he’s now retired to Dayton, Ohio, and has a very successful accountancy business… I think that’s what’s happened to Alan. Either that or he’s dead.”

On a more serious note, he confirmed that no one has contacted him about appearing in upcoming entries in the franchise.

That's not to say it won't happen, as I'm sure Jurassic World 2 will not be the last of these films, but who knows what plans they have in store for this franchise? Truthfully, I don't think they need Neill to continue the series, do you?

Daisy Ridley Joins James Corden and Rose Byrne in Live-Action/Animated PETER RABBIT Movie

0
0

I'd somehow missed the news that Sony was making a live-action/animated hybrid Peter Rabbit film with late night host James Corden voicing the title character. But Variety reports that Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley has joined the cast along with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 actress Elizabeth Debicki.

Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends with Benefits) is directing, and Animal Logic — the studio responsible for the visual effects in The LEGO Movie — will handle the animation elements of this film. There's no word on whether Ridley and Debicki are playing live action characters, or if they'll provide voices for other animated characters. In the Peter Rabbit stories, the mischievous Peter has three sisters — Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail — so it's possible that the actresses could be voicing two of those characters here. We do know that Rose Byrne is playing the live-action female lead, whose name is Bea (perhaps Beatrix Potter, the author of the original Peter Rabbit stories?). Production starts in January 2017 and the movie is set to come out in April of 2018.

Watch: The Art of a Great TV Show Title Sequence

0
0

Sploid points us to this cool video from Ryan Hollinger that dives into what makes an exceptionally good TV show title sequence. It seems to boil down to this: all of the great title sequences — whether from Game of Thrones, Dexter, True Detective, The X-Files, and many more — pull you into the story of the show with visuals that either overtly hint at or psychologically trigger thematic connections between what you're seeing in the sequence and the larger point of the show as a whole. Title sequences are often microcosms of the shows themselves, and when you see one that really works, it'll make you think twice about fast-forwarding through it to get to the good stuff.

Michael Bay Addresses TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT Nazi Controversy, Mark Wahlberg Talks Mini-Dinobots

0

There's a bizarre controversy brewing surrounding the latest Transformers movie involving Nazis and Winston Churchill.

Michael Bay's Transformers: The Last Knight came under fire from veterans when Bay and his production team hung Nazi flags on the childhood home of Churchill, who was the U.K. Prime Minister during World War II. Bay addressed the controversy in an interview with the BBC on Friday, saying:

“I just want to say, people were not fortunate enough to read the script, and they don’t know that Churchill in this movie is a big hero. And Churchill would be smiling about Last Knight. They haven’t seen the movie, they don’t know the ending, and they don’t know how Churchill is a hero in this movie. So, as the staff said, ‘He’d be smiling right now.’
When you see the movie, you’ll understand. I for one, probably more than any director in the world, have shot more veterans and more active military men and women in my movies. I would do nothing to disrespect veterans.”

My guess is there will be a clear story reason for those flags to be there. Whether or not that justifies it, or whether the movie will be considered good enough for this to be worthwhile, remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, star Mark Wahlberg took to Facebook in a video recently and confirmed that not only will there be Dinobots in the film, but mini-Dinobots as well (via ComingSoon):

"It’s a cool new story. It’s kind of like a man on the run. Sir Anthony Hopkins is also in the film, got a cool new cast and cool new robots, some cool new villains and some cool new Dinobots. I think you guys are gonna really go crazy for the mini Dinobots."

Will they be racist caricatures like Revenge of the Fallen's Mudflap and Skids, nonsensical afterthoughts like the Dinobots from Age of Extinction, or actual characters this time? That, too, remains to be seen. We'll find out when The Last Knight blasts into theaters on June 23, 2017.

Watch: Michael Giacchino Conducting LOST Music Live in Concert

0
0

On Friday night at the Ford Amphitheater in Los Angeles, Carlton Cuse — one of Lost's showrunners — said that although he's admittedly biased, he considers Michael Giacchino's score for the show to be the best music ever composed for a television series. I agree with him, and in a way, I'm also biased: the show has meant a tremendous amount to me over the years, largely for being one of the first things my wife and I connected over. (The first time we hung out was at a special Lost Live performance of the music back in 2010.) But even attempting to remove my personal attachment to the show and look at it objectively, Giacchino's score is so much better than the music for nearly anything else on TV.

So when they announced We Have to Go Back: The Lost Concert, which would reunite Giacchino with the Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra (the same musicians with whom he recorded the actual score for the episodes), I knew we had to attend. Before the show began, Giacchino and Cuse came out and participated in an audience Q&A, where a few pieces of interesting information came to light. Someone asked which songs were Giacchino's favorite to compose, and he said the ones that meant the most to him were "LAX" and "Oceanic 6." A guy from the UK tried to pry a hint out of the composer regarding his newly-announced work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Giacchino wasn't having any of that. "I literally just started writing that thing," he said. "I have no idea [what kind of music it will have]. It's a lot of fun, I'm having a blast. This is my chance to get away from that." And someone flew all the way from Hong Kong to ask Cuse about what happened in the Dharma Initiative during the three years they were in operation that the show didn't touch on. "They smoked a lot of weed," he revealed to laughter from the audience, "and ABC didn't want us to put that on the air."

Damon Lindelof, Cuse's co-showrunner, couldn't be there because he was in Australia shooting The Leftovers, but he sent in a video greeting that played before the music began. Some of the actors and writers from the show were in attendance, though, including Drew Goddard, Brian K. Vaughan, Jeff Pinkner, Kevin Durand (who played the mercenary Keamy) and Mira Furlan (who played the French woman Danielle Rousseau).

The music kicked off by the orchestra playing along live with the first ten minutes or so of the pilot episode, which was projected on two side walls near the stage. After that, they went right into "Departing Sun":

And here's a mostly-complete track listing for what songs they played for the first half of the evening: "Live Together Die Alone," "Smoke Monster," "Locke'd Out Again," "Take a Hike," "The Constant," "Getting Ethan," and "Life and Death." Here's a section from "Take a Hike," which has one of my favorite motifs that appears throughout the show:

As the intermission approached, the orchestra played along with another section of the show projected on the walls: this time, it was the memorable scene of the castaways launching the raft at the end of "Exodus: Part 1," backed by Giacchino's buoyant and moving "Parting Words." For me, there has never been a more powerful marrying of music and visuals.

During the intermission, Dharma recruitment and orientation videos played out on the screens, while the actors in the audience gamely took photos with tons of fans. The show resumed with an intense burst of music under a clip of Jack fighting Locke in the finale, and then comically transitioned directly into one of Hurley's Mr. Cluck chicken commercials. Giacchino introduced the various sections of the orchestra, including a percussionist who played on the original Planet of the Apes!

He also explained that one person in the orchestra is actually playing music on broken pieces of the actual plane that the production crashed for the pilot episode. You can hear a bit of what that sounds like at the start of this video:

After playing "The Others," Cuse came out and explained that he and Lindelof had written some fake letters from the castaways that were read out loud between songs during the first Lost concert in Hawaii years before (they also read these during the show in Los Angeles I attended six years ago). Mira Furlan (Danielle Rousseau) came on stage to read one from one of the show's more...notorious characters:

Kevin Durand (Keamy) came out to read a section of the season three finale script to give us a sense of what the expletive-filled screenplays were like and how much the writers relied on Giacchino's score for extra emphasis. My personal video malfunctioned during this section, but someone else uploaded part of the reading to YouTube:

The back half of the night included "Oceans Apart," a drum-heavy action montage of moments throughout the series, "Oceanic 6," "Bobbing For Freighters," "The Tangled Web," and appropriately wrapped up with the orchestra playing along with the final emotional ten minutes of the series finale.

Giacchino and the orchestra brought the performance to an end with one encore, "LAX." Overall, it was a terrific night that proved that when the music is as good as it was on this show, simply hearing a few notes from it can be just as powerful a reminder of a show's legacy and impact as rewatching it in its entirety.

Looks Like MACGRUBER 2 is Slowly Moving Forward

0
0

With that awful-looking MacGyver reboot coming to CBS, the world needs a sequel to Jorma Taccone's ridiculous, balls-to-the-wall action parody MacGruber now more than ever. And it looks like that might actually happen.

After hinting at the possibility of a sequel for years in interviews, Taccone took to Twitter this morning to share a couple of photos proving that he and star Will Forte have finally started working on the script for MacGruber 2.

Of course, just because they've started writing the screenplay doesn't mean it will ever make it to the big screen (especially since the first one was a box office dud). But for fans of the first movie, myself included, this is a promising step forward and adds a little fuel to the fire that we may see MacGruber back in action once again. Here's hoping the writers include that mysterious "gnarly" cold open Forte mentioned last year.

WESTWORLD Gets Two New Featurettes and a Much Better Poster

0
0

I've seen the pilot of HBO's Westworld, and I'm currently working on a piece detailing my thoughts about it that I'll probably publish the Monday morning after the show debuts. For now, though, I'll just say that the show is off to a very good start. It grapples with some serious, complex themes, and this new introductory featurette touches on a few of those:

This one gives you a bit of an idea of how the robotic occupants of Westworld (called "hosts" in the show) live, and what happens when they start remembering things from past "lives" they've lived:

And finally, HBO released a brand new poster (above) which I consider to be a massive improvement from the Vitruvian Man-esque first poster. This one is a close-up of an eye, and you can see the mesas and landscapes of Westworld circling the inside of the iris. It's a nice blending of the two genres — western and sci-fi — that hold the show together.

Westworld premieres on October 2nd, 2016, so stay tuned for my take on the show right after that.

John Carpenter Explains Why He Disliked Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN Remake

0
0

I was not a fan of Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween. For me, the movie was just so uninteresting in every way because it completely defeated the purpose of what Michael Myers is. I've always wondered what Halloween creator John Carpenter thought of the film, and thanks to a recent interview with New York Film Academy Students (via iHorror), now we know!

Turns out he felt the same way about the reinvention of Myers as many horror fans did. Also, apparently Zombie said some things about Carpenter that weren't true, and he didn't care for that. Carpenter explains:

"He lied about me. He said that I was very cold to him when he told me that he was going to make [Halloween]. Nothing could be further from the truth. I said, 'Make it your own movie, man. This is yours now. Don't worry about me.' I was incredibly supportive. Why that piece of shit lied, I don't know. He had no reason to. Why did he do it? So, frankly, that will color my response to the film. If I take that away, I did not... I thought that he took away the mystique of the story by explaining too much about [Michael Myers]. I don't care about that. He's supposed to be a force of nature. He's supposed to be almost supernatural. And he was too big. It wasn't normal."

Exactly! Michael Myers is supposed to be a force of nature! Zombie seemed to completely ignore that huge important aspect of the character when making his film. There was really no point in giving Myers the backstory of being a disturbed young boy with shitty parents. Doing that was a complete disservice to the character.

I loved the nightmarish, suspenseful feel of the original film. That was all stripped away in Zombie's film, and it was replaced with lots of predictable blood and gore. What do you all think about Carpenter's thought on the Halloween remake? Do you agree with him or not?
