Black Panther's Suit in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Is 100% CGI in Every Frame of Film

Black Panther made his feature film debut in Captain America: Civil War, and it certainly was an impressive debut. Chadwick Boseman was awesome in the rol,e and Marvel did an incredible job bringing him to life. I especially thought the costume was badass.

I assumed there was some CGI used to give the costume that wicked cool look that it had in the film, but I didn't realize it was entirely CGI! This news surprised the hell out of me because you couldn't even tell. Now, when I say entirely, I mean entirely.

During the commentary on the film's Blu-ray/DVD, (via ScreenCrush), directors Anthony and Joe Russo discuss the introduction of Black Panther with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. At one point Joe says this:

“[They] really did a ton of work on that outfit. I mean, we had an outfit that we used on set. It’s impossible when you’re talking about an otherworldly outfit like the one that the Panther wears, which has a certain luminescence to it because it’s made of a woven metal. We could never afford to construct an outfit like that that an actor or a stunt player could move around in without sweating to death or that would capture the luminescence that we need. So what we ended up doing in post is ILM came in and painted over Chadwick and the stuntman. The outfit is completely CG.”

McFeely and Markus then went on to clarify that every single frame that featured the Black Panther, we are seeing a full CGI suit. The Russo Brothers confirmed this as well. I would have never thought that every frame featured a CG suit, and I'm incredibly impressed by what the visual effects team accomplished.

Whenever I think of a full CGI superhero suit, the Green Lantern's movie suit automatically pops into my head. That was just terrible on every level. ILM seems to have perfected the craft, though, because Black Panther's suit is a work of digital art.

First JUMANJI Sequel Photo Features Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart

A lot of people seem to be excited about the upcoming Jumanji sequel starring Dwayne Johnson. The film is currently in production, and today Kevin Hart released the first officially photo from the film. It features himself with Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black, and as you can see they all look great and ready to embark on a dangerous adventure.

A couple weeks ago some concept art was released, giving us an early glimpse at what his character would look like. At the time it was rumored that Johnson's character Dr. Bravestone was the avatar of the person playing the game. I assume if that's true, then all of the characters we see in this new photo are avatars of the players (most likely kids) that are playing the game.

Johnson has previously talked about how the film will honor the memory of Robin Williams:

"An important thing that I want to be honest and bring up is Robin Williams. The love and respect I have for this man is boundless. You have my word, we will honor his name and the character of “Alan Parrish” will stand alone and be forever immortalized in the world of JUMANJI in an earnest and cool way. I have an idea of what to do and I think his family will be proud."

Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher, Sex Tape) is directing the film from a script written by High Fidelity and Con Air scribe Scott Rosenberg. I'm a huge fan of the first movie, and I hope this sequel ends up being good!

Must-Watch LUKE CAGE Featurette Offers New Footage and Explores the Hero for Hire

Netflix has released another great behind-the-scenes featurette for Marvel's Luke Cage. Not only does it offer us some more new footage from the series, but it also goes in depth to explore the title character played by Mike Colter

This looks like it's going to be one hell of a great show, and I've heard from a couple people that have already watched it that it's Marvel's best Netflix series so far. It'd be awesome if that actually were the case, but we'll just have to wait and see the series for ourselves before we can agree or disagree with that.

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city–forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

Luke Cage premieres on Netflix on September 30th.

Actress Linda Blair Upset She Hasn't Been Contacted For EXORCIST Series

The actress who played Regan (the possessed girl) in The Exorcist film is miffed she has not been asked to be a part of the new television series. Linda Blair spoke with Forbes about her feelings about the show series, which premieres this Friday on Fox:

"I am looking forward to seeing what they do. They are trying to come up with different scary stories that have to do with the paranormal and exorcism. They keep mentioning my name when they talk about it and I’m like, Stop teasing me. Put up or shut up...They haven’t contacted me or reached out at all. If they want to play ball, let’s play ball. I should be involved but they have never invited me to. So far they have only said it to the press. We wish them all the best, we really do. Geena Davis is a huge fan of it all and I’m a huge fan of hers so of course, I’m going to wish them good luck with it. I don’t want people to fail, that’s not who I am.

I would think the series would want to include Linda in any way they can! Considering the uphill battle of skepticism it's going to face regarding just how far a network television series can push the limits, it couldn't hurt to have some call back to the original!

Spider-Man Saves a Redhead in Set Photos From SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Some new photos have surfaced from the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming and they feature Spider-Man swinging from a helicopter while holding on to a redheaded girl.

I've been seeing a lot of discussions online about who the redhead could be. She is obviously a stunt double, but who is she doubling for? A lot of people are saying it could be for Zendaya Coleman, who is heavily rumored to be playing Mary Jane Watson.

I seriously doubt that this is the same character that Zendaya is playing in these photos, though, because Zendaya doesn't have red hair in the film. You can see proof in some previously-released set photos here. She also wasn't sporting red hair in the footage we saw at Comic-Con, so I don't see how this could be Zendaya's character. The girl in the photos also seems a lot more pale.

So this could either be just a random redheaded bystander Spider-Man saves during the movie, or it could be a version of Mary Jane Watson being played by another actress. What do you think?

Keanu Reeves Fights For The Truth in The Trailer For His Courtroom Drama THE WHOLE TRUTH

When Keanu Reeves isn't playing a badass action hero shooting up bad guys in the movies, he takes on roles like the lawyer he plays in his latest film, The Whole Truth. The film is a courtroom drama in which Reeves is hired by a woman (played by Renée Zellweger) to help defend her son, who is accused of murdering his father. Of course, as the trial progresses, we learn that everything isn't as it seems.

I'm an unapologetic fan of Keanu Reeves. The guy is awesome. For the most part, I enjoy the films he makes and it's always good to see him take on new and different roles like this. So yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

Defense attorney Richard Ramsay (Reeves) takes on a personal case when he swears to his widowed friend, Loretta Lassiter (Zellweger), that he will keep her son Mike (Gabriel Basso) out of prison. Charged with murdering his father, Mike initially confesses to the crime. But as the trial proceeds, chilling evidence about the kind of man that Boone Lassiter (Jim Belushi) really was comes to light. While Ramsay uses the evidence to get his client acquitted, his new colleague Janelle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) tries to dig deeper – and begins to realize that the whole truth is something she alone can uncover.

The Whole Truth is set to hit theaters and On Demand starting on October 21, 2016.

The CW Releasing Free App For Current Episodes of Your Favorite Shows

This season you'll be able to watch the current seasons of all your favorite CW shows for free with no cable subscription! iDigitalTimes reports that a new The CW app will be available next week on Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, Xbox One, and more for free with no login required. The latest episodes of every prime time series will be available on the app on demand, and the network will no longer be offering next day uploads of their new episodes to Hulu. They'll also be releasing the full season of their shows on Netflix a few days after their finales on the network.

What the app will not have are the previous seasons of the current shows, but those are already available via Netflix.

The move seems incredibly odd seeing as CBS is still pushing subscription only with its All Access platform and still holding out on letting fans see the whole season of the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery without paying first. It's a welcome change, and hopefully, a test run to see if other companies will adapt to a free model so we can get Star Trek down the road!

SCRUBS Creator Working on Comedy Set in Space For NBC

Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs, is developing a new sitcom for NBC based in space. A.V. Club writes that Spaced Out will be based on commercial space travel in the not-so-distant future. So...like a live-action Futurama? Probably not, but let's hope it's just as good! It's not often we see a sci-fi comedy flourish in the mainstream!

No real details on casting or anything beyond the premise, but I think it's safe to say this will not be Zach Braff's return to television. (Editor's note: Braff is reportedly returning to ABC in a new show called Start Up.)

Clive Owen Revs Back Into Action in Continuation of BMW Short Film Series; Newest Episode Directed By Neill Blomkamp

In 2001 and 2002, BMW released a series of eight short films called "The Hire" that starred Clive Owen as a slick getaway driver. They were a precursor to movies like Drive and The Transporter, and one of the coolest aspects was that each short was directed by a well-known filmmaker and featured other movie star talent.

We've known that District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has been working on a mystery project with Jon Bernthal and Dakota Fanning because he teased the project on his Instagram:

Really enjoyed working with @jonnybernthal and @dakotafanning on this new project. Always wanted to direct one of these....

A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp) on

And today, we've finally found out what that project is.

BMW has announced (via ComingSoon) that the company is resurrecting the short film series to celebrate its 15th anniversary, and Clive Owen is returning to reprise his role as the mysterious Driver. The first new short is called The Escape, and Blomkamp is directing it. (In addition to Owen, Bernthal, and Fanning, it also stars Vera Farmiga.) The bad news: The Escape isn't online yet. It'll premiere on BMWFilms.com on Sunday, October 23rd at 6:00pm EST.

With The Escape, Blomkamp joins the A-list stable of original BMW Films directors from the seminal project including Academy Award winners Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Ang Lee; Joe Carnahan, Wong Kar-wai, Guy Ritchie, John Woo and the late John Frankenheimer and Tony Scott. “The Hire” also featured A-list talent in front of the camera including: Gary Oldman, Stellan Skarsgård, Forest Whitaker, Mickey Rourke, James Brown, Don Cheadle, Madonna, Adriana Lima, Danny Trejo, Kathryn Morris, Marilyn Manson, Ray Liotta, Robert Patrick and Dennis Haysbert.

Here's a teaser for the new short, and below that, check out some of the older entries in "The Hire" series:

Emotional Fan-Made SUPERMAN Short — "It All Goes Away"

This is a fan film you have to watch! For what it lacks in action, "It All Goes Away" really dives into the character of Clark Kent in a way not even the films have touched. Teenage Clark learns to cope with his great power when his friend is affected in a great way.

The film was made by Zachariah Smith and is based on "Sam's Story" by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. Figures Marvel's head of TV would write something inspiring enough to make Superman feel human. That should spin some DC fans' heads.

Heads up WB and DC: this is the kind of stuff I want to see more of from your heroes.

Video: The Cast Cracks Up in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Gag Reel

Movie blooper reels are often quick, breezy showcases of blown lines and funny pranks to show that the cast and the filmmakers aren't taking themselves too seriously. But this one for X-Men: Apocalypse is over eight minutes long, and it does a better job than most of these at recreating the atmosphere of actually being on a set. Movies can seem glamorous, but the process of actually making them can be pretty tedious, especially when things don't go as planned. This one shows Evan Peters taking an unintended fall during his big Quicksilver scene, Rose Byrne almost twisting her ankle a bunch of times, and Jennifer Lawrence being more focused on lunch than acting (sad to say, her performance in the movie sort of feels that way too).

Let us know what you think.

In what was perhaps the biggest shock of Sunday night, Rami Malek won the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his work on USA's Mr. Robot. Of course, Malek is brilliant in the show but he was going up against the likes of Kevin Spacey, Bob Odenkirk, Kyle Chandler, Liev Schriber, and Matthew Rhys. To put it simply, there's a lot of competition and talent in that list for a relative newcomer to sweep in and get the award! It's well-warranted and deserved nonetheless.

Of course, Malek had fans reeling with his statement "Tell me you're seeing this too," which has now prompted a Mr. Robot homage you can check out below! Thanks Reddit for bringing this around!

Movie poster art has become a big business for companies like Bottleneck NYC, Hero Complex Gallery, Gallery 1988, and Mondo, and I don't see them going away any time soon because there are always going to be fans who appreciate seeing their favorite pieces of pop culture reimagined through a different lens by talented artists. You don't have to look any further than this site to see how much poster art has blown up in the past decade or so, and now a new documentary called 24x36: A Movie About Movie Posters is set to explore how and why this happened.

Kevin Burke's new movie has received its own poster and trailer prior to its Fantastic Fest debut this year. No word yet on distribution, but we'll keep our ears open. In the meantime, check out the trailer below:

Los Angeles Movie Studio Tours, Ranked

$
0
0

Earlier this month, my parents came to visit me and my wife in Hollywood and we all went on a tour of the Sony Pictures lot. I’d been on the lot a bunch of times before to see screenings, but that was the first time I’d taken the official studio tour. Since I’ve also been on the tours at Universal, Paramount, and Warner Bros., I decided to rank them for you in case you plan on visiting Los Angeles and have any interest in checking one (or more) out in person.

Before we get started, here are a few basic tips and pieces of information about these tours in general.

For anyone who already knows the ins and outs of film production, these tours will be covering familiar territory. They’re largely designed for people who come in with little to no knowledge of how a movie is made, and most of the tours sort of take you through a Cliff’s Notes version of the process as you pass certain areas on the lot (covering each stage of a movie’s development, they’ll point out executive’s offices who greenlight projects, sound stages where the films are shot, post-production facilities where the editing is done, etc). But even if you went to film school or otherwise know how the sausage is made, it’s still cool to be there, walking (or riding) around in the places where it actually happens every day.

You won’t always see a celebrity. Certainly there will be a handful on the lot — filming, working in offices, taking meetings, whatever — but actually laying eyes on them is not a guarantee. Don’t bank your entire trip on the idea of seeing a huge movie star in person.

There’s only one studio tour that’s technically in Hollywood, and that’s Paramount. Los Angeles is a huge city, and the rest are spread out all across the area in different sub-cities of their own. Sony is in Culver City, Warner Bros. is in Burbank, and Universal is in Universal City. If you’re not from around here, it’d be easy to assume that these studios would all be relatively close to each other, but depending on where you’re staying and what time of day you choose to go, it could easily take an hour (or longer) to get there in traffic. Here’s a map of where each major studio lot is located:

A quick note about this list: I tried to give an overview of each tour without giving away too many specifics of what you’ll actually see there, because being surprised at what’s around the next corner is half the fun. In addition to pricing information, each tour’s website has a more detailed rundown of what you’ll see if you decide to go. And keep in mind that everything you see on these tours is subject to change depending on your tour guide and what's happening on the lot that day. Your experience may not exactly mirror mine.

With all of that out of the way, let’s get to the rankings.

1. Warner Bros.

For my money, the Warner Bros. tour is the closest to the ideal studio tour experience. You ride around on a cart with a handful of other people, the guide takes you into a sound stage or two (if they’re available), and you get to see the iconic WB water tower (fans of Animaniacs will especially appreciate this). You’ll realize fairly quickly on tours like these that just driving around and passing a bunch of stages that look exactly the same on the outside sort of gets old fast, so thankfully WB has a whole section of the tour devoted to a two-story room with tons of props. When I was there a couple of years ago, they had a special exhibit devoted to Batman that showed off the various Batmobiles, vehicles, costumes, and props from the movies over the years, and there was also a Harry Potter area where you could see costumes and props from that franchise. Their backlot itself is also very nice, though not quite as instantly recognizable as some of the ones you’d see on other tours. Still, I think this is the most well-rounded tour that has a good balance of history, an interesting lot, and cool props.

Good for fans of: DC Films, Harry Potter, The Big Bang Theory, Friends, Casablanca

2. Paramount

I actually spent a year working as a studio page at Paramount, but that was back in 2011-2012, and I’ve heard the tour experience has changed a tremendous amount since then. When I was giving the tour, there frankly wasn’t much the guides were able to do for the guests. We drove people around on carts — or walked, depending on the type of tour we were giving on the day — and explained a detailed history of the lot, which was fascinating (there’s some great history at Paramount) but admittedly not exactly the most exciting thing for people who were dying to see cool stuff. One nifty aspect: near the end of my time there, all the guides were given iPads loaded with clips from movies, TV shows, and commercials that were filmed at various spots on the backlot, so when we passed a particular location, we could stop and show the guests a clip of something shot on the very spot where they were standing. Instead of just taking us at our word that something was filmed there, it was great to be able to physically show the guests proof before moving on to the next thing.

Like every other tour, we were largely at the mercy of what was happening on the lot that particular day. Sometimes we’d be able to take the guests to the edge of the huge New York Street backlot and watch a movie or TV show shoot a scene, and sometimes we were allowed to take people inside open sound stages that weren’t being utilized on that day to explore the sets, but other than that, there simply wasn’t much we could offer.

But in the past few years, it looks like the experience has improved dramatically. One of the best additions is all of the daytime tours now have access to the prop warehouse, which I was only able to visit a couple of times as an employee (and back then we weren’t allowed to take tour guests along). There are also two new tiers of tour that weren’t available when I was there: a four and a half hour “VIP” experience that includes a private gourmet lunch or afternoon hors d’oeuvres, access to the archives, the backlot, and more; and a seasonal two and a half hour “after dark” walking tour at night with flashlights, which seems like it’d be a really fun way to experience the areas of the lot that are said to be haunted.

Good for fans of: Star Trek, Sunset Boulevard, I Love Lucy, Glee, NCIS: Los Angeles

3. Universal

This is the most impersonal tour of the big four, because it’s essentially just another ride at Universal Studios Hollywood (it includes a Jaws area with fire effects, an Earthquake section with flooding effects, the King Kong 360 3D experience, and Fast & Furious - Supercharged, all without getting off the tour cart). That means that the only way to take this tour is to buy a ticket to get into the theme park. At the other tours, you’ll be broken up into small groups (usually no more than 20); here, you’ll sit on a massive tour cart with a ton of other park guests. The ability to ask questions to a personalized tour guide is gone, and instead Jimmy Fallon hosts a tour video that plays continuously on screens above you as you ride all around the backlot.

So I’ve listed some of the negative aspects of this tour, but the big positive here is that Universal’s backlot is absolutely massive and you get to see a ton of iconic (and occasionally jaw-dropping) movie locations, from the original Bates Motel and Psycho house to the courthouse square from Back to the Future, and many more. Without giving too much away, there is also a long line of movie-related vehicles you pass during the tour. (Tip: sit on the left side of the cart for the best view of those.) It won’t be the most intimate tour you’ll come across, but if you were planning on going to Universal Studios anyway, make sure you carve out enough time to do this because it’s the best aspect of the entire park.

Good for fans of: Fast & Furious, Psycho, Jurassic ParkWar of the Worlds, How The Grinch Stole Christmas

4. Sony

I feel bad putting this one last on the list because if you go check it out, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with it. It’s not as if all the other ones are great and this one is terrible — it’s just that something had to take the number four spot, and that’s how the chips fell. The Sony tour is very similar to what the Paramount tour used to be: you learn a good deal about the history of the lot, but the guides don’t have the luxury of iPads to be able to show you any clips. One advantage they do have is that their lot was formerly the MGM backlot, meaning you’ll be walking around on the same ground where mega-classics like The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind were filmed. This is also the only tour that can take you into a foley stage (where many of a film’s sound effects are created) and a scoring stage, where composers and conductors like John Williams create the music you hear in the movies. They have some screen-used props you can check out as you wait for the tour to begin, but their selection is a little lackluster compared to some of the other studios.

Good for fans of: Ghostbusters, Breaking Bad, Spider-Man, Men in Black, Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune

Obviously, your individual enjoyment of these tours is going to vary depending on what kind of stuff you like to see. I love movie props, and based on my experience, Warner Bros. has the most (and best) props on display, so that’s a big part of why I ended up giving them the number one spot. If you love history, you may have a better experience with Sony or Paramount. If you really don’t care very much about the actual process of filmmaking and are just looking to see a bunch of cool stuff in a relatively short amount of time, then Universal is probably the way to go.

If you’ve been on any of these tours, we’d love to hear about your experience in the comments below.

Jared Leto Will Star as Andy Warhol in Upcoming Biopic

After a disappointingly small amount of screen time in a supporting role as the Joker in Suicide Squad, Jared Leto is returning to leading man status. THR reports that the Oscar winner will portray pop artist Andy Warhol in a new biopic called Warhol, which is being written by The Wolf of Wall Street scribe Terence Winter and produced by Michael De Luca (The Social Network, Captain Phillips).

Warhol was a fascinating figure, a vibrant artist in multiple fields, and a figurehead of the New York City art world in the 1960s. He was also openly gay in a time when that wasn't nearly as culturally accepted as it is now. Recently, Bill Hader played Warhol in Men in Black 3, and Cary Elwes is playing him in the upcoming Billionaire Boys Club. John Cameron Mitchell also played the artist in HBO's short-lived series Vinyl, a series for which Winter was the showrunner.

The project is reportedly being eyed as a "strong mainstream project with prestige credentials" instead of a small budget indie, so from the sound of it, this will be Leto going back into full-on Oscar bait mode again. He'll next be seen in Blade Runner 2.

There's so much great television out there right now that it's practically impossible to see everything. You have to prioritize, and that means there are going to be some things that fall through the cracks. For me, one of those things has been Star Wars Rebels, the Disney XD show that Star Wars fans have been praising from the start. With season three premiering this weekend, Star Wars Explained (via /Film) has condensed the first 37 episodes of the series into a concise three minute summary that will catch you up if you want to follow along but can't quite carve out the time to watch everything that's come before.

ALLIED Trailer: Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard Are in a Dangerous Romance

Well, I thought we were going to get through the day avoiding an article about how Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt today, since every tabloid and gossip rag online is flipping out about that "news" right now. But Paramount has essentially forced our hand by choosing today, of all days, to release a new trailer for Robert Zemeckis' upcoming World War II spy romance Allied, which stars Pitt and Marion Cotillard, so I suppose it's worth a mention at this point.

Some rumors peg an on-set romance between Pitt and Cotillard as part of the reason for the divorce, but I saw another report deny that, so I don't know what to believe. Frankly, it's none of my business, and the only way it's even remotely relevant to what we do here is if this movie possibly mirrors real life events in Pitt's relationship, it may prove to be a fascinating point in a career retrospective later on down the line (with art imitating life, or maybe the other way around). Either way, Paramount's ice cold for releasing this trailer today.

Allied hits theaters on November 23, 2016.
