Jackie Earle Haley to Play Villain in Robert Rodriguez's ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

$

Jackie Earle Haley apparently isn't worried about being typecast as a villain, because THR reports that he's just signed on to play a baddie in Alita: Battle Angel.

James Cameron spent years hoping to direct a film adaptation of the popular manga, but since he'll be busy with Avatar sequels for the foreseeable future, he ended up hiring Sin City and Desperado director Robert Rodriguez to helm the movie instead. They've cast The Maze Runner and Man Seeking Woman star Rosa Salazar in the lead role of an amnesiac female cyborg who only remembers her deadly fight training and becomes a bounty hunter, and Christoph Waltz as the cybersurgeon who discovers her, puts her back together, and becomes her mentor.

As for Haley, THR says: "Sources were light on character information but it is believed Haley will play a monstrous cyborg in a villain role that will call for plenty of CG and greenscreen." Rodriguez certainly won't have any trouble with greenscreen technology, and considering the sheer amount of big budget movie work Haley has done (in movies ranging from Watchmen to RoboCop and tons more), he should be easily equipped to handle any challenge that comes his way. Production is slated to start next month in Rodriguez's TroubleMaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

I haven't read the Battle Angel manga. For those of you who have: any thoughts on which character he'll be playing in the film?

Steven Spielberg and Harvey Weinstein Developing Rival Movies Based on Real-Life Kidnapping

Looks like there may be some bad blood between Steven Spielberg and Harvey Weinstein.

A few months ago, Spielberg announced that he'll follow Ready Player One with a movie called The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which Lincoln and Munich screenwriter Tony Kushner has adapted from David Kertzer's book. Here's the description, just to get you up to speed:

Bologna: nightfall, June 1858. A knock sounds at the door of the Jewish merchant Momolo Mortara. Two officers of the Inquisition bust inside and seize Mortara's six-year-old son, Edgardo. As the boy is wrenched from his father's arms, his mother collapses. The reason for his abduction: the boy had been secretly "baptized" by a family servant. According to papal law, the child is therefore a Catholic who can be taken from his family and delivered to a special monastery where his conversion will be completed.
With this terrifying scene, prize-winning historian David I. Kertzer begins the true story of how one boy's kidnapping became a pivotal event in the collapse of the Vatican as a secular power. The book evokes the anguish of a modest merchant's family, the rhythms of daily life in a Jewish ghetto, and also explores, through the revolutionary campaigns of Mazzini and Garibaldi and such personages as Napoleon III, the emergence of Italy as a modern national state. Moving and informative, The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara reads as both a historical thriller and an authoritative analysis of how a single human tragedy changed the course of history.

Weinstein had apparently been developing a film version for eight years when Spielberg decided to announce his own version. Despite the fact that Spielberg has already cast Mark Rylance and Oscar Isaac in his film, Weinstein refuses to let it go: THR reports that he's now in talks with Everest helmer Baltasar Kormakur to direct another take on the story and Robert De Niro is in talks to play the role of the Pope.

Well known for his scheming tactics, Weinstein is looking to get his version into production before Spielberg's, eying a production start in January 2017; Spielberg has to wait until spring of 2017 before he can get going on his movie. Ego is a big deal in Hollywood, so I doubt either of these guys is going to back down. That means we'll probably see both movies hit theaters next year, marking the latest and one of the strangest examples of two nearly-identical projects coming out within months of each other.

Bummer: STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Delayed Until Summer 2017

We probably should have seen this coming.

Deadline reports that CBS has officially delayed the premiere of Bryan Fuller's Star Trek: Discovery from January of 2017 all the way until May, meaning that we'll now have to wait five more months to see the new show. Fuller has been teasing small plot details here and there, including that this will be the first Trek show that doesn't center on a captain, but we've yet to hear about any actors who have actually been cast in the show. Considering that they were supposed to premiere in four months and there's been essentially no real promotion beyond the Comic-Con teaser, that seemed suspicious and, well, it wasn't a great sign.

Apparently Fuller and executive producer Alex Kurtzman are behind the delay because they requested more time from the network. They put out a joint statement:

“Bringing Star Trek back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood. We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality. Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: Star Trek deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of.”
“The series template and episodic scripts that Alex and Bryan have delivered are incredibly vivid and compelling,” said CBS TV Studios president David Stapf. “They are building a new, very ambitious Star Trek world for television, and everyone involved supports their vision for the best timing to bring to life what we all love on the page.”

Currently, they have three scripts written and the entire first season planned out. The premiere of the show's 13-episode first season will make its debut on CBS before moving to CBS All Access, the channel's new streaming service.

Look, it sucks that fans will have to wait even longer to see Trek return to TV, but as we've seen so often in the world of film, being locked in to a release date before the realities of production set in and refusing to allow more time for a better product often results in disaster. I'm glad they're taking the time they need to get it right, because this new show matters a whole lot to a whole lot of people.

Mondo has revealed two brand new posters by artist Dave Perillo dedicated to animated versions of The Dark Knight. In honor of Batman Day (which is apparently this Saturday, September 17th), the company is putting two posters — called Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures — on sale tomorrow at a random time on their website. Check these out:

Batman: The Animated Series by Dave Perillo 18"x24" Screen Print, Edition of 225 Printed by D&L Screenprinting $40

I think I'm more partial to the first poster, just because I grew up watching (and loving) The Animated Series and never really tuned into The New Batman Adventures. Was that show any good? Is it worth going back and tracking down?

Be sure to follow Mondo on Twitter @MondoNews and pay close attention to their feed tomorrow if you want the chance to secure one or both of these posters. Good luck!

Netflix's Twisted Family Drama BLOODLINE Will End After Season 3

I was excited to learn earlier this summer that Netflix had renewed Bloodline for a third season. This is such an intense series, and if you haven't watched it you should because it's one hell of a great edge of your seat thriller.

Unfortunately, the third season of this twisted family drama will be its last. The series was created by Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman, and Glenn Kessler, and when they first started, they hoped to tell this story they over the course of five or six seasons.

So season three wasn't supposed to be their last, but it looks like they are going to have to wrap it all up in the ten episodes of this last season. I'm kinda bummed out that the show is ending sooner than expected, but I'm sure the creators will finish strong.

There's no reason given as to why the series is being cut short, but I imagine it's because Florida cut its entertainment tax incentives program and that's where they shoot the series.

Bloodline has an amazing cast which includes Kyle Chandler, Linda Cardellini, Ben Mendelsohn, Sissy Spacek, John Leguizamo, Norbert Leo Butz, and more.

A Dark Presence Lurks in Chilling Horror Short LASIURUS

Director Marcus Alqueres has sent us another great short film he directed called "Lasiurus." This is the same guy who directed the superhero short "The Flying Man" and the sci-fi football short "NF7."

"Lasiurus" is a horror film that follows "a young family dealing with the morbid secrets of an uncharted town. The short focuses on a single character, Julian, who, unsuspecting of his surroundings, stumbles upon a deserted market. The eerie atmosphere builds up to the reveal of the dark presence around him."

The film was made on a shoestring budget, but Alqueres is a talented individual who made a solid movie that I enjoyed. If you're a horror movie fan, you've gotta check it out!

Rob Lowe Joins the Cast of SUPER TROOPERS 2

As you may have already heard, production on Super Troopers 2 began last week. It was officially announced with a photo from the set, and fans of the hilarious cop comedy were ecstatic! Well, now you have even more reason to be happy because Rob Lowe has officially joined the cast of the film!

Deadline reports that Lowe will play a character named Guy Le Franc, who is "a former hockey player and the current mayor of a Quebec Canadian border town."

Broken Lizard, the team behind Super Troopers, raised $4.5 million last year to make the film from the crowd-funding site Indiegogo. There's no doubt the sequel is going to be insanely wild and crazy, and the addition of Lowe's awesome face is just going to make it all even better.

I wish I had more details on the sequel, but this is all we've got so far.

Don't Expect Any Live-Action STAR WARS TV Series Anytime Soon

Last month we learned that ABC was having conversations about developing that live-action Star Wars: Underworld series that George Lucas was developing before he sold his life's work to Disney.

As you've probably already heard, there are said to be over 100 completed scripts of a 400 episode series that are ready to rock and roll when and if Lucasfilm ever decided to develop them further. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously talked about these scripts saying they are "gold" and that she does, in fact, want to "develop those things further."

It seems like it's going to be a very long time before that ever happens. In a recent interview with THRBen Sherwood, the President of Disney-ABC Television Group, said that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up for a live-action series anytime soon. He also says that as of right now, they are more focused on the next animated Star Wars series being developed:

"The live-action Star Wars plan rests in the hands of [Walt Disney Studios chairman] Alan Horn, [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy and the great folks at Lucasfilm. Somewhere we hope in a galaxy not too far away there will be a television show that will air on one of our networks. But I wouldn’t get anybody’s hopes up too high. They have a lot of movies to make between now and then. We are deep into a very productive relationship with Lucasfilm making [Disney XD’s] Star Wars Rebels. And we are in ongoing conversations with them on what is the next Star Warsanimated show."

To be honest, if a live-action Star Wars series like Underworld ever did happen, I'd like to see it developed for a streaming service like Netflix. It would allow for them to take the Star Wars universe to a darker place like Marvel does with their Netflix series.

I think Lucasfilm is currently getting all of their movies planned out and organized. Once those is in full swing there's a better chance that they will start to focus on a live-action Star Wars series.

The Underworld series was to be set in the Coruscant underworld between Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. It was going to be a gangster drama that was likened to Deadwood and The Godfather in space. It was also described as being The Empire Strikes Back on steroids. Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum previously discussed the project:

Basically, it is like The Godfather; it’s the Empire slowly building up its power base around the galaxy, what happens in Coruscant, which is the major capital, and it’s a group of underground bosses who live there and control drugs, prostitution.

Hopefully, one day this happen because I really want to see it!

Disney has released an incredibly fun and adventure filled new trailer for their upcoming animated film Moana. It looks like Disney has another big hit on their hands with this film. The trailer is packed full of great new footage that sees Moana and Maui embark on a journey that will lead them to the realm of monsters.

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.

The film was directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Princess & the Frog) and features music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i.

Moana sets sail into U.S. theaters on November 23rd, 2016.

bruce-lee-vs-wong-jackman-in-trailer-for-birth-of-a-dragon

"This is kung fu. It's not a game. It is not a religion. It's about who lives, and who dies."

If you're a fan of Bruce Lee and martial arts, you've gotta watch this new trailer for the upcoming film Birth of the Dragon. The story revolves around Lee and his legendary fight against Kung Fu master Wong Jack Man, who doesn't like what Lee is doing with the art of Kung Fu. A lot of the story is shown in the trailer. This looks like a fantastic film, and I'm excited about watching it.

Birth of the Dragon was directed by George Nolfi, director of The Adjustment Bureau, and writer of films such as Ocean's Twelve, The Sentinel, and The Bourne Ultimatum. I like the tone of the film, and the guy they got to play Bruce Lee — Philip Ng — is great!

Young, up-and-coming martial artist, Bruce Lee, challenges legendary kung fu master Wong Jack Man to a no-holds-barred fight in Northern California. Set against the backdrop of San Francisco’s Chinatown, this cross-cultural film chronicles Bruce Lee’s emergence as a martial-arts superstar after his legendary secret showdown with fellow martial artist Wong Jack Man.

There's no release date for the film yet, so stay tuned for any updates.

The Black and Chrome Version of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Is Coming in December!

The long awaited black and chrome version of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road finally has a release date. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment  has announced that they will be releasing the Mad Max: Fury Road Black & Chrome Edition on December 6th in a two-film collection that also includes the theatrical version of the film. It will also include a special introduction by Miller describing his vision for the film. I'm excited about watching this version of the film because Miller says it's the best version of it. When previously talking about his  black and white vision of the film, he said:

"One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white — the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The other version is to really go all-out on the color. The usual teal and orange thing? That’s all the colors we had to work with. The desert’s orange and the sky is teal, and we either could de-saturate it, or crank it up, to differentiate the movie. Plus, it can get really tiring watching this dull, de-saturated color, unless you go all the way out and make it black and white."

WB is also releasing the Mad Max High Octane Collection on the same day. That collection includes the films Mad Max (1979); Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981); Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985); and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), as well at the Black & Chrome edition. The Blu-ray collection will also include a 4K-Ultra HD version and a UV Digital Copy of Mad Max: Fury Road.

Here is a list of the High Octane Collection Special Features and Additions:

  • NEW! *Fury Road “Black & Chrome” Edition – Witness the surreal black and white version of mastermind George Miller’s Fury Road.
  • NEW! *George Miller Introduction to the Mad Max Fury Road: Black and Chrome Edition – Special introductory piece by George Miller describing his vision.
  • NEW! Road War – In 1982, the world was blindsided by George Miller’s masterpiece of apocalyptic destruction: The Road Warrior. For the first time ever George Miller, Terry Hayes and star Mel Gibson tell the story of the car-crushing production that redefined action cinema forever.
  • Madness of Max – The previously released Mad Max (1979) documentary is a feature-length documentary on the making of arguably the most influential movie of the past thirty years. With over forty cast-and-crew interviews, hundreds of behind-the-scenes photographs and never-before-seen film footage of the shoot, this is, without a doubt, the last word on Mad Max (1979). Interviews include: George Miller, Byron Kennedy, Mel Gibson, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Steve Bisley, Roger Ward, Joanne Samuel, David Eggby, Jon Dowding and many more. From the Producers to the Bike Designers to the Traffic Stoppers, this is the story of how Mad Max was made.

A few weeks ago we learned that fan-favorite Marvel character Spider-Gwen would be coming to the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. It's all part of their “Return to the Spider-Verse” storyline. In the fourth installment of this story arc, Spider-Man and Kid Arachnid make their way back to Miles Morales' home universe in New York City, which is where they come face to face with Spider-Gwen. Spider-Gwen is being voiced by Dove Cameron, and I'm sure fans of the series are going to enjoy the clip and what's coming in the new episode. Here's a brief plot summary:

Spider-Man, having collected all of the shards of the Siege Perilous, returns to Miles Morales' universe and finally confronts Wolf Spider.

Ash Is Going to Alola in POKEMON Series Based on New Game

As if it wasn't an automatic assumption, Ash Ketchum is conveniently taking his adventure right into the premise for the new Pokemon game Pokemon Sun and Moon. Anime News Network says Ash is going to the island of Alola, learning to dance, and discovering new Pokemon and old Pokemon with new forms.

So is Ash the Marco Polo of the Pokemon world, or is he just that dumb? How is it this kid was allowed to set off on a journey at age 11 and be so ignorant of the world?! I get that it's a TV show, but can we get a canon explanation or something from the showrunners? Ash not knowing about Pokemon on an island is like me at the age of 26 seeing a Kangaroo and being like HOLY S***!

Maybe he'll actually win a Pokemon League this season. I would expect this series to come to the U.S. sometime mid to late 2017.
