Video Explains Why Marvel Doesn't Have Memorable Movie Themes

$

Hey look, we finally have something to criticize the Marvel Cinematic Universe for, and it's actually pretty valid. YouTuber Every Frame A Painting points out that Marvel doesn't really have any stand out themes in their films and is pretty formulaic in their procedure for putting music in film. Of course, he cherry picks some fantastic examples, but the point is valid nonetheless. You may hate Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman, or Suicide Squad, but I guarantee you can remember some of the music from them, right? Watch the full video below.

Benicio Del Toro Might Star in Shane Black's THE PREDATOR

Director Shane Black is very excited about The Predator, and he's getting close enough to casting that fans can start getting excited about it too. According to THRBenicio Del Toro is reportedly in talks to star in the new sci-fi actioner, which is being hailed as an ensemble piece led by the character BDT would play.

Around the time James Franco was rumored to be in contention for the lead role, we heard that this film's main character would be named Quinn Mackenna, and we know that the movie will take place thirty-plus years after the events of the original (seemingly making it more of a sequel than a remake or reboot), but beyond that, concrete details are hard to come by.

Black wrote the treatment, while his Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker handled writing the screenplay. A February 2017 start date is being eyed, so we'll see if this deal actually goes through and Del Toro officially joins the project. I can totally see him going toe to toe with a vicious alien, so it'll be interesting to see how he's utilized in this movie (which Black wants to be a big summer movie fans will want to line up to see).

Watch: Seeing MAD MAX: FURY ROAD With No Special Effects is a Jaw-Dropping Tribute To George Miller's Brilliant Insanity

I didn't love Mad Max: Fury Road nearly as much as my colleagues when it came out last year, but that was largely because I didn't like the way the story folded back on itself and essentially involved characters driving somewhere, only to turn around and drive right back to where they came from. To me, it felt almost like it was just an excuse to get as many crazy car stunts in a run time as possible, and while I love and appreciate all of that craziness, I just wish the story had been a little better.

But generally speaking, people don't go to Mad Max movies for the story. They go to see some balls-to-the-wall action insanity, and that's exactly what director George Miller delivered. This completely CGI-free video, which compiles selections from B-roll, pre-production tests, and behind-the-scenes clips shot during the making of the movie, is a celebration of Miller's unbelievable vision and a tribute to the badass crew members who made it happen. Even if you hated the movie, you've gotta admire the balls of how this film was made:

Lupita Nyong'o Still Hasn't Filmed Her STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Scenes

$

Rian Johnson wrapped principal photography on the still-untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII a couple of months ago, but one actress still has work to do in a galaxy far, far away. Speaking with Collider at TIFF, Lupita Nyong'o revealed that she hasn't filmed any of her scenes for the upcoming movie yet:

"I haven’t worked with [Rian Johnson] yet; I’ve yet to shoot. That’s in my future."

Nyong'o plays Maz Kanata, the wizened old pirate queen who ran the cantina seen in The Force Awakens. She somehow came into possession of Luke Skywalker's lightsaber (formerly Anakin's), which was passed to Rey and was waiting to be returned to Skywalker in that film's closing moments. Kanata, of course, is created digitally using motion-capture technology, and if Disney/Lucasfilm are truly using Marvel as a model for how to make movies like these (as some have speculated), it seems like a given that there will be time for reshoots built into the production schedule. It's been well-documented how J.J. Abrams basically saved The Force Awakens by reshooting all of Rey and Finn's scenes together late in the game, so it stands to reason that Johnson would have similar time allotted to be able to figure out anything that may not be working in his movie.

In any case, they have plenty of time to film Nyong'o's work, since Star Wars: Episode VIII doesn't hit theaters until December 15, 2017.

Video: Inside Weta's Visual Effects Work on Disney's PETE'S DRAGON

I still haven't had a chance to see Pete's Dragon, David Lowery's reimagining of the 1970s Disney live-action/animation hybrid. I'll check that off the list soon (I've heard nothing but terrific things about it), but even in the early footage I saw from the film, I knew it would look outstanding. Now Wired has released a video that dives into the work that New Zealand digital effects company Weta did for the movie, and how they altered the technology for Elliot's invisibility to make it feel as if it had a tangible, tactile purpose for the story. (Thankfully there aren't really any spoilers here, though I can tell they walk right up to the line instead of crossing it.)

8-Bit Cinema: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS

A big part of the fun of the 8-Bit Cinema video series is seeing how the creators take movie characters and situations that would never have appeared in an old school video game and translating them into that aesthetic (see: The Shawshank Redemption, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc). I'm not quite sure, then, why they'd apply that technique to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, because there's already an abundance of real TMNT games out there that many of us played growing up. Most gamers are deeply familiar with how the heroes in a half shell look as video game characters, so the point of this one sort of escapes me.

Oh well. Maybe you'll dig it anyway:

"I will pull the Rebels apart piece by piece."

As we get closer to the premiere of Star Wars Rebels season three, we have a new trailer, clip, and news regarding the return of Katee Sackoff

The trailer offers us some great new footage from the series teasing what's in store for us, and at one point we see a quick shot of Darth Maul and Kanan looking like they are possessed by some kind of green energy. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but we'll find out.

The clip is called "Mind Trick," and it shows Ezra using the Force in a deadly new way. It's like he's testing out the dark side of it.

Then there's the news that Sackoff (Battlestar Galactica) will reprise her role as the fierce Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze. The character made her debut in the Clone Wars series and was a part of a Mandalorian splinter group known as the Death Watch. After her leader, Pre Vizsla, was killed by Darth Maul, she joined forces with Obi-wan Kenobi briefly. It will be interesting to see what she's up to now.

Having established a secret base on Atollon, the Ghost crew, now led by a more powerful Ezra, strengthens the rebel fleet by acquiring new resources and recruits eager to stand against the Empire.  However, the Imperial efforts to eliminate the rebellion are now being led by the coldly analytical Grand Admiral Thrawn, whose strategic, tactical, and cultural insights make him a threat unlike any they have faced before. In Season Three, Ezra and Sabine take on new roles and challenges as the rebels prepare for their biggest mission yet — a direct assault on the Empire.

Star Wars Rebels returns Saturday, September 24th.

Hot Toys Unveils Their Incredible 1966 Version of Cesar Romero’s The Joker

Hot Toys previously released their action figures of 1966 TV versions of Batman and Robin and now today we have a few photos of their new figure of The Joker, who was wonderfully played by Cesar Romero.

One of the great things about this figure is that it's so detailed that it includes Romero's mustache which was painted over with white face paint. The actor refused to shave the mustache for the role, but it added a fun little detail to his version of the character. I'm so happy that Hot Toys made sure to include that because they could have easily pretended that it was never there.

Netflix has released a fantastic new clip from Marvel's Luke Cage. It focuses on the villain Cottonmouth, played by Mahershala Ali. There was a much longer version of this clip screened at Comic-Con that blew the crowd away. This is just a little taste of that clip, which is awesomely shot and written. This guy is going to be a such a great villain!

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city–forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

Luke Cage is set to premiere on Netflix on September 30th. To watch all of the previously released trailers, clips, and other promo videos for the highly anticipated series, click here.

Kate Beckinsale Is Looking Badass in UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS Poster, Film Is Headed to NYCC

Last week the first trailer for Underworld: Blood Wars was released, and it seems like it's going to be a great new chapter in the franchise. Franchise star Kate Beckinsale has released the first poster for the film, and it's got a pretty awesome look at the return of the Vampire death dealer Selene. I love the white snowy look of the poster. The character is sporting a badass look in that white hooded coat. I don't recall ever seeing the character in white.

Screen Gems is bringing the film to New York Comic Con next month along with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Beckinsale will be attending the event and will appear on the panel taking place on Friday, October 7 at 1:30 PM at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. New York Comic-Con runs from October 6th to 9th at the Javits Center in Manhattan.

The next installment in the blockbuster franchise, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Underworld: Blood Wars will be released on January 6th, and you can watch the trailer again below!

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors on Possibility of Using Netflix Heroes, Captain Marvel, and Balancing Characters

Joe and Anthony Russo are hard at work prepping to start production on Avengers: Infinity War. We've already seen the first photo from the set of them working with Josh Brolin. Brolin is playing Thanos in the film. He is only one of a ton of characters who will play a part in this epic story.

The movie is going to be loaded with characters! We know we'll see the original Avengers team, the Guardians of the Galaxy team, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and more coming together to fight the Mad Titan. We don't really know all of the characters that will be involved, but everyone is being considered.

During an interview with the Toronto Sun, the Russos were asked about the possibility of including some of the Netflix characters — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. In response to that Anthony said:

“We do consider everyone. We don’t want to get too specific about what’s going to happen with these movies. We want these movies to be a surprise for audiences.”

I would love to see these characters make an appearance on the big screen in a Marvel movie, but I doubt it will happen. I've heard there's a big disconnect between the Marvel film and TV creative teams. They were then asked about Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, which they are excited about. Joe said:

“It’s an incredible piece of casting. You couldn’t ask for better. Not only is she an amazingly talented actor but she’s a wonderful human being. We’re really looking forward to the opportunity of re-teaming with her,  if we were to get the chance to work with that character.”

We all know they are going to be working with her in Infinity War. I don't know why they are still being coy about it. The directors went on to talk about the balancing act that they will have to do with all of the characters they will be loading into this movie. Anthony explained:

“What we did in Civil War is exactly what we want to do in the Avengers — no matter how much screen time a character has, you can still have a lot of ambition for what you do with that character while you have them."

Anthony also offered insight into how they write their story and script and explained how writing themselves into a corner helps strengthen their story and film.

“There’s a storytelling adage that Joe and I love, which is write yourself into a corner. If you put yourself in a very difficult place as a storyteller… that becomes where a lot of the excitement and surprise and spontaneity comes from.”

The Russos are a couple of very talented guys who are doing great things in the Marvel Universe. Their style seems to be working for them very well, and there's no doubt that these upcoming Avengers films they are working on are going to be incredible.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4th, 2018.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY Season 6: Oh the Possibilities!

$

We are only a day away from the premiere of American Horror Story season six, and we still have no official confirmation of what this season’s theme will be. It has been thought that this upcoming season will be called “The Mist,” but no one knows for sure.

In the meantime, we have seen a whole host of teasers and promos for the season, and each one contains a little something different (some being more relevant to the theme than others). The latest spot, titled “Bite me” contains a lovely little arachnid with a wide vocal range (you can check it out here).

In anticipation of this upcoming season, I have decided to list some possible themes that I believe could be the focus of this upcoming season.

1. American Horror Story: The Machines
Evan Peters' character, Gus, is in the middle of his shift at work and gets hungry. He struggles to decide whether he should just ride out the day and starve or buy a snack from the vending machine with his last dollar. He chooses the vending machine, and boy did he choose wrong. We watch as Gus’ snack gets stuck on its way down and Gus is helpless to do anything about it. Each week, we watch Gus get screwed over by different machines in his office, which seemingly has an absurd number of vending machines. OH THE HORROR!

2. American Horror Story: Sand Memories
Each week viewers are subject to an hour of Hayden Christensen re-enacting that scene from Attack of The Clones where he vents about sand. Tagline: This season is gonna be ROUGH. Just in case you needed a reminder:

3. American Horror Story: Earworm
Each week we watch Sarah Paulson suffer as she tries to figure out what song is stuck in her head. The type of earworm where you are unsure of all of the lyrics, so you hum a tune that may or may not be the chorus of that particular song; and the only person around has absolutely no idea what is going on. Viewers live in fear week to week, hoping that they don’t catch "The Earworm."

4. American Horror Story: The Clutch
Each week viewers watch different cast members experience random spurts of flatulence as they ride a crowded elevator. The cast tries different ways to try relieve their gas while simultaneously trying not to embarrass themselves. Season highlights: Lady Gaga, the severed head of Kathy Bates, and Evan Peters in that black spandex suit from season one.

5. American Horror Story: Buds
Apple releases the next generation of iPhone without a headphone jack, forcing people to use wireless earbuds, earbuds that customers will inevitably lose. THIS IS JUST DISASTROUS! This could be an INTERNATIONAL horror story if you ask me! I mean, I probably would lose mine before I even open the box! Good thing that this isn’t—oh…

I guess only time will tell what this seasons theme will be. Tune in to FX on September 14th at 10 p.m. to find out.

Two Amusing Promo Spots for the New X-Men Series LEGION

I'm actually really excited about the upcoming X-Men series Legion. It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun, and today we've got a couple of amusing new promo spots for you to enjoy.

The story for the series focuses on a character named David Haller, who has struggled with mental illness since he was a teenager. "Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real."

Haller also goes by the name Legion. He is the son of Gabrielle Haller and Charles Xavier in the comics, and he's a powerful mutant who is one of the founders of X-Men. What makes this character so unique and interesting is the fact that his mutant powers are controlled separately by his many different personalities.

I think this is one of the coolest characters in the Marvel universe, and it's great that he's getting his own series. I'm actually surprised it took the studio so long to actually bring this character to life.

Legion comes from Fargo creator Noah Hawley and stars Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton, and Bill Irwin. The series is set to premiere in early 2017.

Felicity Jones Says Her ROGUE ONE Character Jyn Erso Was Inspired By Ripley From ALIENS

$

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is slowly but surely sneaking up on us. This is my most anticipated film of the year and everything that I've seen from it so far has absolutely thrilled me. I honestly don't want to see any more of the film until it's released, but when Lucasfilm does release a new trailer and promo spots and a bunch of clips, of course I won't be able to contain myself. Plus it's my job to watch them, so...you know, I don't really have a choice.

I was a big fan of Felicity Jones before she was even cast in Rogue One as the main character Jyn Erso, who will lead a small band of Rebels on a mission to steal the Death Star plans from the Empire. Jones looks awesome in this role and it seems like she is the perfect fit for it.

During an interview with Yahoo, Jones spoke about her character and revealed that Jyn was inspired by Sigourney Weaver's Ripley in Aliens

"Well, it’s interesting because I didn’t know [when shooting A Monster Calls] that I would be playing Jyn, who is very much inspired by Sigourney’s character [Ripley] in Aliens. So it’s interesting that we had worked together. But I’ve been so inspired by her work and she was a role model growing up."

Jones went on to explain a little bit as to why Ripley was her inspiration in bringing the character Jyn to life:

"Obviously, you have different references that you look at. And I love the qualities that she brought to that part. And early on in my research it was one of the films that I watched that informed my process."

Ripley certainly is a badass character so it completely makes sense that she would serve as the inspiration for another badass female character. The actress went on to briefly talk about what she thinks fans will love about the rebel characters in the story, saying:

"I think you’ll love all the rebels. Because they’re flawed. They’ve all had histories, they’ve all had their own struggles, and I feel like people are going to really champion them and fall in love with them."

I've already liked what I've seen of these characters and I'm excited to see how each of their story arcs play out throughout the film. Some of those characters include Diego Luna's Captain Cassian Andor, Riz Ahmed's Bodhi Rook, Donnie Yen's Chirrut Imwe, Jiang Wen's Baze Malbus, and Alan Tudyk's droid character K-2SO.

Rogue One hits theaters on December 16, 2016. To catch up on all of our previously released news on the film, click here.

The Breakfast is Strong With This One: BB-8 Waffle Maker

If you're in the market for a novelty waffle maker, but are more inclined toward The Light Side instead of The Dark Side, there's now a better option for you out there. Instead of getting a Death Star waffle maker (which totally exists, by the way), why not get one shaped like lovable astromech droid BB-8 from Star Wars: The Force Awakens? ThinkGeek has you covered with this officially licensed product.

What with his little round body and his devotion to Poe and his improvised thumbs up, BB-8 is too dang cute. We could just eat him up. And now, with the Star Wars BB-8 Waffle Maker, you can, too.

Let this Star Wars BB-8 Waffle Maker bring a galaxy far, far away to your breakfast table each morning. Its non-stick cooking plates duplicate BB-8's design on both sides, and red and green lights indicate when the appliance is on and when it's preheated and ready for your batter. It takes 3-5 minutes to cook, a little longer than Rey's insta-bread. Your standard BB-8 waffle comes in at 5" across x 6 3/4" tall, just right to have a stack for breakfast or tuck one in your bag for a snack when you're on the run from people who are probably just sad because they didn't have waffles for breakfast.

You can pre-order it here for $39.99, and it should be available sometime next month. I understand why this would be a fire hazard, but wouldn't it be cool if there was a little lighter that popped out (like his thumbs-up in the movie) to give the waffles a bit of extra crispiness?
