LIFE ON THE LINE Trailer: This Story of Power Line Workers Looks DOA

$

Here's the trailer for Life on the Line, a new movie about a group of power line workers who must step up to the challenge of repairing the grid during a horrible storm with lives hanging in the balance. The premise isn't terrible, but this trailer...well, you've sort of gotta see this thing to believe it. John Travolta stars as a line worker who must raise his orphaned niece (Kate Bosworth), and he doesn't get along with her hot-headed boyfriend/baby daddy, who also works the power lines for the same company (Devon Sawa). I'm not sure if this is just a poorly cut trailer or what, but this looks pretty rough to me. Either way, Travolta's Texas accent is certainly something to behold.

Despite the trailer's claim that Life on the Line is in theaters on September 1, it does not yet have a U.S. release date.

Life on the Line is an exhilarating action drama, which follows the lives of a crew of eccentric and courageous Texan power line workers who do the extremely dangerous work of fixing the crumbling electrical grid. John Travolta stars as ‘Beau’, a salt of the earth man who blames himself for his brother’s death and raises Bailey, his orphaned niece (Kate Bosworth). His worlds collide when Bailey’s handsome lover joins his linemen crew on the eve of a massive and deadly storm that threatens to rip their lives apart.

Gary Oldman Will Play Winston Churchill in Joe Wright's DARKEST HOUR

Focus Features just sent over a press release revealing that the company is teaming up with Working Title Films for a new movie called Darkest Hour, which they'll release in 2017. Gary Oldman will star as Winston Churchill in the drama, which is described like this:

Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

People make a big deal about The Academy Awards because it's the closest thing we have to a Super Bowl for movies, but if you're looking for yet another reminder that the Oscars are not the end-all be-all arbiters of quality, think about the fact that Gary Oldman has been delivering towering performances for something like forty years and has never won (he's only been nominated once!). That being said, the fact that Focus Features is behind this movie and that Oldman will be playing a real life figure in a true story (the Academy loves stories like that) means that he may not be far from his first win.

Joining Oldman in the cast are Oscar nominee John Hurt as Neville Chamberlain, the Prime Minister right before Churchill; Lily James (Cinderella) as Churchill’s personal secretary; Rogue One star Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI; and Oscar nominee Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill’s wife, Clementine.

Darkest Hour begins filming this fall in the United Kingdom and hits theaters here in the U.S. on November 24, 2017.

Humor: Guy Explores "Abandoned" Blockbuster in 2016

Blockbuster was swept off the face of the Earth...right? We read about it in the news, and all our once-favorite local haunts were abandoned, but is every Blockbuster truly out of business in the world? Apparently not, as this video by RubarGar gives us a look at an "abandoned" store.

I guess we can do a "roll call" in the comments: does anyone have a Blockbuster near them? Thanks to Reddit for bringing this to our attention!

Stanley Tucci Returning For TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT

For me, the only enjoyable aspect of the otherwise-interminable Transformers: Age of Extinction was Stanley Tucci performing what may be the most over-the-top delivery of the phrase "Oh my God!" in film history.

That was less than four seconds of enjoyment in a movie that lasted two hours and forty-five minutes. Obviously, that's not a great ratio, so I'm personally bowing out of the Michael Bay-directed Transformers films from now on. But for those who are in it for the long haul and who also enjoyed any aspects of Tucci's performance, you'll be glad to know that according to Variety, the actor is reprising his role as Joshua Joyce in the upcoming Transformers: The Last Knight.

Is it too much to hope that the man who tried to engineer remote-controlled Transformers for humans to use ends up in England interacting with King Arthur in the new movie?

Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters on June 23, 2017.

Check Out This Badass Video Tribute to The Night's Watch From GAME OF THRONES

Game of Thrones has no shortage of mythic characters, legendary history, and epic battles, but one area all of those elements collide is in the Night's Watch. The brothers in black are the last line of defense protecting Westeros from the Wildlings, the White Walkers, and all of the horrors beyond the Wall, and we've tracked many of their exploits over the years on the HBO series.

The team at The Garo Studios, the same ones who have crafted tributes to Dany, Jon Snow, Tyrion, and Ned Stark, are back with a new tribute video, a rousing celebration of the sacrifices and duties of the Night's Watch soldiers that incorporates battles, speeches, and the iconic words of their oath:

"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come."

And now your watch begins...well, as soon as you click play on the video below. Enjoy.

SHANGHAI DAWN Secures NAPOLEON DYNAMITE Director; Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson in Talks to Return

Over a year ago, we wrote about the possibility of a sequel to Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights called Shanghai Dawn, which would bring back stars Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson more than a decade after the last movie in this series came out. We hadn't heard much else about the project in the meantime, but THR has just announced that Jared Hess, the director of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, has been hired to direct it for MGM.

Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, the Smallville scribes who also wrote the screenplays for the first two movies in this franchise, came up with the story for this sequel, and Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum handled the actual writing duties. The plot details for this upcoming installment are unknown at this time, but if Chan and Wilson end up signing on (they're currently in negotiations to return), it'll involve the continuing adventures of misfit companions Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon. Is it too late for this sequel, or are you still excited to see Chan and Wilson reprise their roles?

Go Back to HELL'S CLUB with This New Spinoff Mashup That Features Dozens of Movie Characters Interacting

Just over a year ago, editor Antonio Maria De Silva blew the internet's mind with Hell's Club, a dazzlingly impressive mashup that imagined a shared cinematic universe where movie characters from all sorts of different films partied at the same club. Earlier this year, he released a sequel that extended the chaos even further, and now he's back with a spinoff video that takes place in the Hell's Club bathroom. There are a bunch of iconic bathroom scenes from movie history for him to choose from, and it's cool to see how he ties a bunch of them together and incorporates fights, sex, and hijinks into the action.

GAME OF THRONES Reportedly Adding Angela Lansbury For Season 7; Plus The Latest Non-News About THE WINDS OF WINTER

$

Production of HBO's Game of Thrones is starting later than usual this year because winter has finally arrived in Westeros and the showrunners needed to wait for colder weather to set in at the locations where they film the series. So as the shortened seventh season gears up to start filming, we're hearing more and more about new additions to the cast. Last week, Jim Broadbent joined in a "significant" role, and today, a report from a German site called Bild indicates that Murder, She Wrote and Beauty and the Beast star Angela Lansbury has joined the cast in a small role for season 7.

Rumor has it she'll only spend four days filming her part, which leads /Film to guess that she may be playing Maggy the Frog, the old witch character who gave Cersei the terrible prophecies that have started coming true with alarming frequency in recent seasons. I love that guess and really hope that's who Lansbury ends up playing...assuming, of course, that Bild isn't just pulling this entire story out of their asses. Keep in mind, too, that if she joins the show, she could be playing just about anyone — we're way off book at this point.

Speaking of the books and making things up, it appears that's what's happened with a supposed release date for George R.R. Martin's The Winds of Winter, the latest book in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series on which Game of Thrones is based. Amazon France listed the book's release date as being in March of 2017, leading many to wonder if that was a leaked date for when fans will finally get a chance to read the new book (the previous book was released back in 2011). But Random House (the U.S. publishers for Martin's series) reached out to EW and denied that date in a statement:

“As his publisher, we support George RR Martin as he works hard to finish The Winds of Winter. Any on-sale dates currently listed online for the novel are incorrect. Once we have a publication date for The Winds of Winter, the world will know.”

In other words, nothing to see here.

We've seen some VFX work from Star Wars: The Force Awakens already, but leave it to Industrial Light & Magic to top it all with this excellent four minute breakdown (via io9) of some of their ridiculously detailed work on the film. Seeing this a few days after watching John Williams perform some of the music from this movie in concert makes me want to go back and rewatch this movie yet again. I'm excited about Rogue One, but I can't wait to see how Rian Johnson continues the saga in Episode VIII!

Funny Parody Video Pokes Fun at Hacker Movie Cliches

Movies like The Matrix and Swordfish try extraordinarily hard to make hacking seem really freakin' cool, and there was certainly a time in the '80s and '90s when computers were becoming more mainstream that Hollywood attempted to bring the hacking subculture to the masses in the "coolest" ways they could think of. But it's 2016 now, and with shows like Mr. Robot actually going out of their way to show the most realistic on-screen portrayal of hacking possible, these old cliches stick out more than ever. Check out this fun parody video by the team at White Lightning HQ that pokes fun at the best (or worst) of them:

THE CROW Reboot Will Start Production in January 2017 with Jason Momoa

Relativity is actually moving forward with its new feature film adaptation of The Crow comic series. After all of the issues this film has gone through during its long development, I seriously never thought it would happen. But according to The Wrap, The Crow will be going into production in January 2017.

Three weeks ago it was reported that Jason Momoa will star in the film, which is being directed by Corin Hardy. I loved Hardy's fantasy horror film The Hollow and I hope that he brings that dark visual craziness to The Crow. The site confirms that Momoa has sealed the deal and will start work on it as soon as he's finished shooting Justice League.

As much as I like Alex Proyas' film adaptation of the comic, this new movie will be a more faithful to the comic. On top of that, The Crow creator, James O'Barr had a heavy hand in helping develop this new movie. When previously talking about his vision of the film, O'Barr said:

"[W]e're not remaking the movie. We're readapting the book. My metaphor is that there is a Bela Lugosi Dracula and there's a Francis Ford Coppola Dracula. They use the same material, but you still got two entirely different films. This one's going to be closer to Taxi Driver or a John Woo film, and I think there's room for both of them. Part of the appeal of The Crow comics, after all, is that they can tell very different stories."

I know a lot of fans aren't happy about this remake, but I think this has a good chance of being a solid adaptation. I guess we'll all find out when it's released in theaters. Do you think that Momoa is the right man for the job to play the title character?

Great New Footage From Tim Burton's MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN in 7 Promo Videos

Tim Burton's upcoming fantasy adventure film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, looks absolutely fantastic. This was the perfect story for Burton to bring to the big screen, and if you're excited about seeing it, I've got a collection of seven promo videos for you to watch including three clips, three promos that focus on certain aspects of the story, and a behind the scenes featurette. All of them features some cool new footage from the upcoming film, and I've gotta say, Samuel L. Jackson looks creepy as a hell as the villain.

If you've ever wondered what an X-Men film would be like if it were directed by Tim Burton, this is it! As a longtime fan of Burton I hope this turns out to be one of his better films. He had a streak of duds that ended with Big Eyes, which I thought was great! I hoped that film would be the start of a streak of great films by the director.

When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is.

The movie also stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp, Rupert Everett, and Judi Dench. It's set to be released in theaters on September 30th, 2016.

Stan Lee Featured as MCU's THE WATCHER in Cool Fan-Made Trailer

Stan Lee has made a cameo appearance in almost every Marvel film. This has sparked a fan theory that's been around for awhile that Lee is the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Uatu, also known as The Watcher, but in human form.

The Watcher is one of the oldest beings in the Marvel Universe and is part of a alien race that watches over and observes the Marvel universe. The character records everything that happens, and he's specifically assigned to watch over the events of Earth, but he doesn’t involve himself in its affairs.

Cinefix has taken the concept of this theory and turned it into a great fan trailer. The video is called "Stan Lee is 'The Watcher’ - Trailer Mix," and you can check it out below. Even if the theory is wrong, I'd still like to think that it's true. Stan Lee is the one thing that connects the every Marvel film including the films at Fox.

Shia LaBeouf Was Almost Cast in David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD

Actor Shia LaBeouf recently did an in-depth interview with Variety about the ups and downs of his career and his personal life. It's an interesting read, and LaBeouf is on the road to bettering himself. You can read that full interview here.

During the interview, the actor revealed that he almost was cast in Suicide Squad. He had recently worked with director David Ayer on the film Fury, and Ayer wanted him to take on the role that was eventually given to Scott Eastwood. LaBeouf explained that the role was much bigger before Will Smith jumped on board.

“The character was different initially. Then Will [Smith] came in, and the script changed a bit. That character and Tom [Hardy’s] character [later played by Joel Kinnaman] got written down to build Will up.”

He went on to say that the studio didn't really want him in the film:

“I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”

It was probably for the best, especially since the size of the character's role in the story was drastically shrunk down. After the negative reviews flooded in, I'm sure LaBeouf thought he dodged a bullet.

The actor went on to reveal another movie role he was up for that he wished he had gotten. It was the role of Robert Ford in the incredible film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The role eventually went to Casey Affleck, who was amazing. Even Labeouf praised his performance:

“The guy is fucking brilliant. You look at it and you go, ‘No way I could have pulled it off.’ But I wanted it so fucking bad. We all chased it. The whole generation went after that. Ben Foster is in the room. Casey. Everyone did.”

I think the right actor ended up in that role. LaBeouf may be a little on the crazy side, but they guy really is a talented actor. He hates the Transformers sequels he made just like the rest of us. He respects Michael Bay's work, though:

“Mike is an artist. People don’t realize how dope that dude is. He’s got to get a little ballsier with his moves — he’s trying to toe the line and be James Cameron, but James Camerons are dying. I don’t know what he’s chasing, but that version of director is dead. If Mike is to sustain, he’s got to get f–king weird.”

LaBeouf may have burned some bridges in his career due to his craziness, but he's getting his act together and building his career again. He said, "I’m learning how to distill my ‘crazy’ into something manageable, that I can shape and deliver on the day."

LaBeouf can next be seen in the upcoming indie films Man Down and American Honey, which will be screened this week at the Toronto Film Festival. What are your thoughts on the actor?

Mel Gibson Calls BATMAN V SUPERMAN a "Piece of Sh*t," Says Superhero Films Are a Waste

Mel Gibson is one hell of a talented filmmaker. One of my favorite movies of all time is Braveheart. and he most recently screened his new film, Hackshaw Ridge, at the Venice Film Festival. His film received a ten-minute standing ovation, so it looks like Gibson is back in business making great films again.

One kind of film we'll never see him make is a superhero movie. The genre doesn't seem to interest him at all. In fact, he says there's a lot of waste that goes into these films and specifically points out Batman v Superman, calling it a piece of shit. Here's his direct quote from Deadline:

"I look at them and scratch my head. I’m really baffled by it. I think there’s a lot of waste but maybe if I did one of those things with the green screens I’d find out different. I don’t know. Maybe they do cost that much. I don’t know. It seems to me that you could do it for less. If you’re spending outrageous amounts of money, $180 million or more, I don’t know how you make it back after the tax man gets you, and after you give half to the exhibitors. What did they spend on ‘Batman v Superman’ that they’re admitting to? And it’s a piece of shit."

He then goes on to say that he has no interest in making these kinds of movies:

"I’m not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot."

That's interesting because last year, Gibson said he would be interested in directing Iron Man 4. Maybe that was the exception, though, because Iron Man doesn't wear spandex.

Superhero movies obviously aren't for everyone. There are plenty of great directors out there who will make superhero movies, so I'm not concerned about Gibson taking on one. I would, however, like him to get around to making that Viking film he was planning all those years ago with Leonardo DiCaprio. That's a movie I would love to see him make!

As for his thoughts on Batman v Superman, I'm not surprised, A lot of audiences and fans felt the same way.

JK Simmons Has Completed Shooting JUSTICE LEAGUE, Praises Zack Snyder

It was an exciting day when we learned that JK Simmons would be playing Commissioner Gordon in Zack Snyder's Justice League. The casting of this incredible actor was an inspired choice, and I can't wait to see him in the role.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Simmons revealed that he has finished shooting his role in Justice League and that most of the scenes he shot were with Ben Affleck. He also had nothing but great things to say about director Zack Snyder:

"My part is done. They are filming that for basically most of 2016, so some of the superheroes are still at work in jolly old London, but I'm back home with my family."

When asked if most of his scenes were with Affleck, he said:

"Yeah, mostly with Ben. In this first installment of the Justice League, Commissioner Gordon is not a particularly sizable part. We just kind of introduce him and see a little bit of his interactions with Batman -- and with most of the Justice League. That was a really fun set. Zack [Snyder] runs sort of a big, happy family and it's obviously, in many ways, a very different work environment when you're working on a big, giant movie like that than a relatively small movie like The Meddler. But at the end of the day, the director is the one who sets the tone. And one of the things that Zack and Lorene have in common is they're just nice, smart, competent, fun people that you don't mind spending a 12-hour day with."

It's good to know that he had a great experience working on the movie. It will be interesting to see how the film turns out and what Simmons' new version of this iconic character will be like.

I'm sure one day Warner Bros. will again make a DC movie that critics will love. I'm still rooting for these films because I so badly want them to be good! Wonder Woman looks incredible, so that could be the movie that breaks the critic bashing streak.

Justice League will be released November 4th, 2017.
