Throwback: Zach Galifianakis Has Ridiculously Awkward Interview

0
0

A weird 2010 interview featuring Zach Galifianakis is circling the web this morning, and it's something you need to see. Many people have speculated that this interview that took place during the press tour for It's Kind Of A Funny Story was the inspiration for Between Two Ferns, and that seems to be confirmed by an earlier interview with The Rock. The first episode of BTF aired in October, when Dallas reporter Gordon Keith had been doing his schtick as early as March of that year!

I don't understand how a journalist who works for a professional news station in Dallas gets away with doing this, but it's pretty damn hilarious! He needs attention for inspiring Galifianakis to do his series!

HUNGER GAMES Series Getting 4K Releases

You'll soon be able to watch all of the Hunger Games films in 4K according to Bloody Disgusting. Lionsgate says to expect the series to come to 4K November 8th. The price seems a little steep...

With four times the resolution of Full HD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) that delivers the brightest, most vivid and realistic color and greatest contrast, The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 4K Ultra HD Combo Packs will each be available for the suggested retail price of $22.99 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack will be available for the suggested retail price of $42.99.

So basically, if you want the entire set it's going to run just under $70, but if you wait for the last film to drop in price you can just spend $22 for now which is a steal! Out of all the movies that I would want to see in 4K, I'm sure this would rank among the most impressive with its use of color and various scenery throughout the film.

Maybe this will be one to look out for a Black Friday deal on?

New Korean Animated Film Criticized for Looking Like SPIRITED AWAY

0
0

A lot of people are upset after seeing a trailer for a Korean animated film that looks a lot like the Hayao Miyazaki classic Spirited Away. Kotaku writes that dislikes are raining down on the Youtube trailer for Lost In The Moonlight, which according to the director is nothing like the Japanese animation at all.

I can't really agree with him after looking at the trailer. At first, I was like, "Yeah young girl in a mystical wonderland that's 1/3rd of anime feature films," and then I saw the Hotel, and the humanoid animals, and the inanimate living objects, and a dragon, and now I'm like "this is Spirited Away." Really the only thing missing are the pig parents!

Unless we're talking about legal ramifications, however, it's not like this is the first film to mimic another. This just looks like a low rent version of the real film. We'll see if its box office debut reflects that!

James Gunn Talks About Vin Diesel's Voice Work in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

0
0

Update: It sounds like Diesel may still be doing the voice work for Baby Groot in Guardians 2 after all, and we've altered our headline to reflect that. Here's a different tweet from writer/director James Gunn that indicates the smaller version of the character may require some different vocal work from the actor (read: it probably won't sound like Groot sounded in the first movie).

That might mean Diesel's voice will be heavily edited in post-production, he'll take a hit from a helium balloon before he records dialogue, or he has a lot more vocal range than we previously thought. Adding to the evidence is a recent photo of the Groot-script that Diesel and Gunn share, so it looks like Comicbook's piece was off the mark. We regret not digging deeper into the details earlier. Our original article follows:

While it seems like it would've been common sense to assume, it's now official that Vin Diesel will not be voicing Baby Groot in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Comicbook says that while director James Gunn has confirmed that Diesel will be lending his voice to the film in some way, it will not be with the now much smaller Groot.

It's worth mentioning that in the footage we saw of Baby Groot at SDCC, he did not speak other than the occasional grunt. I could very well see perhaps the team making a brief appearance at the Groot home planet where all the other Groots are! That would be funny to see the planet of Groots with all of them saying their trademark phrase.

Are you disappointed Diesel won't be voicing the small Groot? I think it's fine without him.

Walter Jones Says Original POWER RANGERS Will Not Be in New Film

Walter Jones (the Black Ranger) has confirmed that none of the original cast of the Power Rangers series will be appearing in the new film. i09 says the actor appeared on the Audibly Exquisite Podcast and said that none of the cast were asked to appear in the new movie, even in cameo form...

It’s not likely. Unfortunately, we were not invited to be part of the film, which is confusing to me, but I’m excited about the film nevertheless.

I can't say I'm surprised by the news. This film looks to be launching the franchise for a new generation, so to acknowledge the previous products would be a step backwards. Still, it does kind of suck that there won't be anything for the adults taking their kids to see this movie! Would you have liked to see the Rangers appear again on screen?

Daniel Craig Is Reportedly Being Offered $150 Million to Come Back as James Bond

There's been a lot of rumors and talk that Daniel Craig will not be coming back to reprise his role of James Bond in any upcoming films. After saying he'd rather slit his wrists than come back to play Bond again, I didn't think there was a chance of him ever coming back.

The question is... Can he resist a $150 million dollar payday to reprise his role for two more films? Radar Online has inside sources that claim that is the amount of money Sony Pictures is offering him to come back to the franchise. The source explains:

“The studio is desperate to secure the actor’s services while they phase in a younger long-term successor."

Personally, I'd say taking $150 million to star in two more films would be so much better than slitting your wrists, but that's just me.

The source goes on to say, "Craig has played a genius hand. Everyone knows how much executives adore him, and the idea of losing him at such a crucial time in the franchise isn’t an option as far as all the studio honchos are concerned."

The source continues:

"Daniel’s the key for a seamless, safe transition as far as Sony and Bond bosses are concerned, and they’re prepared to pay a king’s ransom to make it happen.”

The question is, does Craig want to return to a franchise that he obviously isn't excited about anymore? Will the dump truck full of money change his mind? Only time will tell, but apparently, Sony will be making a big announcement any day now regarding the franchise.

The rumored plan is that Sony will make two more James Bond films back to back that they hope Craig will star in, and after that, they will pass the baton to a new actor who will "mark the start of a new era."

I'd love to see Craig come back, but if he doesn't, I'd be fine with that. I think the franchise could use a fresh new face as Bond anyway.

What do you think? Should Craig take the $150 million?

The Evolution of Stop-Motion Animation in Film Over the Years

I love the art of stop-motion animation, and I couldn’t be happier that there’s a studio like Laika keeping the art form alive. They recently released the film Kubo and the Two Strings, which is easily one of the best films I’ve seen this year. As a tribute to the art of stop-motion, Vulgar Efendi created a wonderful video that shows us how stop-motion animation has evolved through the years. It starts with the year 1900 and takes us all the way through 2016. It’s 116 years of stop-motion awesomeness in only three minutes! You'll find a full list of films featured in the video below.

Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy Tease HUSH and A DEATH IN THE FAMILY Animated Films

Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy recently attended Canada's 2016 Fan Expo, and while they were there they teased a couple DC animated film projects that could be in the works.

Those projects are the highly acclaimed Batman: Hush and A Death in the Family. During the Q&A portion of the panel, a fan asked what films were currently in development at WB's Animation department.

In response to the question, Conroy turned to Hamill and asked, "What do you think about Hush?" Hamill then asked Conroy, "Well, what do you think about A Death in the Family?"

The two could just be having fun with the fans, or these could be two films that are currently in early stages of development.

I'd like to be excited about this, but after with what they did with Batman: The Killing Joke, it's hard to be excited. That was such a terrible adaptation of such an incredible graphic novel.

As of right now, the official lineup of DC animated films currently includes Justice League Dark, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, and an original feature from Bruce Timm that's titled Batman and Harley Quinn.

Hush and A Death in the Family could easily be coming in the next set of animated films that WB develops. Would you be excited to see these comic book stories adapted into animated films?

Fun Fan-Made Trailer Pits The Avengers Against Transformers

"Assemble and Roll Out!"

If you've ever wanted to know what a movie might look like in which The Avengers battle the Transformers, ScreenRant has released a fan-made trailer bringing this crossover to life, and it's called The Avengers Vs. Transformers. There was actually a comic book crossover that Marvel published back in 2007 called New Avengers/Transformers, so this wouldn't be the first time we've seen some of the characters from these properties cross paths. This is a fun trailer, but I'd never want to see this crossover happen for real. I'm not a big fan of what Michael Bay has done with the Transformers franchise.

Here is our epic fan made trailer showcasing Marvel's Avengers taking on the powerful characters from the Transformers franchise. There is no denying that this would be an epic battle for the ages, but, who do you think would truly win?

First Look at the Villain Shocker in Costume from SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

0
0

Some photos have surfaced from the set of Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming featuring the villain Shocker in full costume that you can check out below. It was recently revealed in a leaked call sheet that actor Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo) is playing the character. The costume is pretty cool, and as you will see, it includes several familiar elements from the comic book design.

The suit the character wears was self-invented, and in the comics it provides deflection of physical attacks, resistance to being grasped, and there are the gauntlets which you can see in the photos below. The gauntlets are "designed with vibro-shock units known as 'vibro-smashers' that, when activated by a pump-action thumb trigger, can project a concentrated blast of compressed air that vibrates at an intense frequency. This creates a series of rapid-succession high-pressure air blasts that result in a series of powerful impacts."

Spider-Man: Homecoming centers on Spidey dealing with the perils of high school while battling supervillains and being a superhero in New York. The Jon Watts-directed film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and he will be joined by Michael Keaton as the Vulture, Michael Chernus as the Tinkerer, Zendaya as MJ, Tony Revolori as Flash, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, and Donald Glover. Reprising their roles from the MCU, we have Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7th, 2017. For all of your previously released news on the film, click here.

Stan Lee Says DC Can Use Him for Film Cameos and as a Writer If They Want

0

It's always fun to see what Stan Lee's cameos in the Marvel films will end up being. It's always a great surprise. Could you imagine the Marvel Comics legend showing up in a DCEU film? He can! In fact, during a Q&A panel this weekend at Fan Expo 2016, Lee said that DC can use him if they want. When asked if he would ever consider doing cameos in other projects, Lee said:

"I can't make out what he said, but it sounded like it came from the heart. I want to do more cameos also, I've even let people know it doesn't have to be a Marvel movie, I don't know why DC hasn't called me. They could use me!"

I doubt Lee will ever show up as a cameo in a DCEU film like Justice League or The Flash, but that would be a big crazy surprise if he did!

At another point during the Q&A a kid wearing a Suicide Squad t-shirt got up and asked Lee how he thought he could make DC a hit with critics? The question was followed by applause, and Lee offered this simple yet confident reply:

"Let me write it."

I'm sure he's just being playful with his answer, but do you think Lee could really help the DCEU? With the kind of scores of that Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad have received on Rotten Tomatoes (49%, 23%, and 19%, respectively), some DC film haters might think Lee helping out with some writing on the films couldn't hurt.

One thing you should know, though, is that Lee never wrote a film that was actually produced. He just laid the groundwork for all of the Marvel Comic movies that are being made today. He did write a live-action Spider-Man movie in the '90s that was never made. I don't know if it was any good or not, though.

READY PLAYER ONE Set Photos and Videos Show Car Chase and Steven Spielberg Hard at Work

One of my most anticipated movies coming up is the big screen adaptation of Ready Player One. This is a story that encompasses a ton of the pop culture I love and grew up with. We've got some new photos and videos to share with you from the set of the film. The photos give us a look at some of the impressive set designs and the video features a car chase scene as well as footage of director Steven Spielberg hard at work. The movie is currently shooting in Birmingham, England, which is where these photos and video were taken.

The movie stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, T. J. Miller, Win Morisaki, Philip Zhao, Hannah John-Kamen, and Mark Rylance.

Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 30, 2018. To check out some previously-released set photos and other news regarding the highly anticipated film, click here. I included a detailed description of the story below the photos and videos.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.

Netflix Renews NARCOS For Season 3 and Season 4

Netflix has announced that its cartel series Narcos will be getting a third and fourth season. Variety reports the news comes four days after the second season to the series was uploaded to the streaming service. A new video teasing season three with the tagline "The Blow Must Go On" was uploaded to YouTube:

I'm assuming that's a new character reveal? Not to spoil the ending of season 2 for you, but Netflix already did with its "Who Killed Pablo" campaign.

I'm happy to see the series will be continuing with the drug trade and cartel wars beyond Pablo Escobar. As entertaining as his story was, it was pretty high profile and many people knew how the story ended before this series even started. I would love to see them move onto some lesser known cases that would bring a little more suspense to the series, wouldn't you?

Season 3 of Narcos is set to debut in 2017.

Chadwick Boseman Says BLACK PANTHER Will Be Darker and Grittier Than Previous Marvel Films

0
0

Chadwick Boseman is saying Black Panther may have a bit darker tone than we're used to seeing in other Marvel films, according to CBR. The actor made the statement in response to a question about whether or not the serious nature of the character will affect the tone of movie:

"It’s funny, because on one hand, the Marvel movies that I’ve liked the most are the ones that are funny. I love “Ant-Man.” But for me, most of the time the darker superhero movies are the ones that I gravitate towards, that I love the most. So I’m glad that I’m not in an “Ant-Man.” I’m glad that the tone of [“Black Panther”] may be a little grittier. I just wanted to establish that from the beginning, that that’s what we were doing. That that’s what I intend to do. I feel like we’ll end up in a place that I’ve always wanted to be when I look at superhero movies. Those are the ones I like the most. It’s exciting to do that."

Boseman also shared some further insight on Black Panther, citing how Captain America: Civil War did a service to filmgoers in introducing the character and exploring his motivations:

"I feel like you get a chance to see that he’s not going to be a selfish ruler. He’s not going to be a dictator. He’s not going to be a person that does things purely for his own gain. That he does have a heroic aspect at the heart of a hero; of a leader. You can pull for him, because he’s merciful. And it leaves room also for him to do things that are not necessarily perfect...A few people have said to me, 'I thought you were a villain at first.' They didn’t have the prior history of the character. And they enjoyed that. They thought I was going to end up being a villain. That’s telling to me. I feel like it’s a good thing that we were able to create that context where he’s going after things for his own reasons, not necessarily good or bad, but ultimately that you can create something that is universally good — that merciful aspect — I think is a good thing for the character."

I'm sure the words "dark and gritty" bring some worry among some Marvel fans, but it's not like we haven't been seeing that on the TV side these past couple years. I highly doubt Black Panther can go as dark or will be as dark as Jessica Jones or Daredevil, and it will be nice to see a little grit in that cinematic universe for a change!

Black Panther is scheduled for release July 8th, 2018.

50 Cent Cosplayed as TEEN TITANS' Cyborg For His Son's Birthday

Ten years ago, if you would've told me 50 Cent was going to dress up as Cyborg from Teen Titans, I wouldn't have believed you. Hell, if you would've told me that yesterday, I would say you were full of s***. Yet today is a new day, and rapper Curtis Jackson dressed up as the hero for his son Sire's birthday (via io9):

Perfect. Jackson's son was obviously psyched to see his dad as one of his favorite heroes. In addition to 50's get up, his mom (model Daphne Joy) dressed up as Starfire:

Baron Zemo Originally Had a Much Darker Intro in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

0
0

Even though Daniel Brühl's version of Baron Zemo wasn't the version we all know from the comics, I still really liked what they did with the villain in Captain America: Civil War. He was a very complicated character who was a very smart, brutal, and deeply disturbed.

In the film, we are first introduced to Helmut Zemo when he stages a car accident outside of the home of Vasily Karpov, a character who was heavily involved with The Winter Soldier Program. Zemo ends up getting into the home of Karpov, obtains the Hydra manual (which contains the code words to control Bucky Barnes), and then tortures Karpov for information on "mission report: December 16, 1991." Karpov doesn't give in, so Zemo kills him.

There was a completely different introduction to Zemo that was a lot darker, but it was changed because the Russo Brothers wanted more story out of the character. The information comes from Joe Russo in the audio commentary that was provided on the Digital HD release of the film. He says:

"We had an original scene where Zemo was at an auction, a black market auction. And that's how he got his hands on the book, was at this auction. He killed everybody in the auction by gassing the auction. But we just didn't get enough story out of him; it was too mysterious of an opening scene."

Anthony Russo gives more of an explanation as to why they didn't go that route, saying:

"It did not connect him to the opening of the movie cleanly. This one does -- you get the red book, and you literally get Karpov, which is perhaps the most important thing."

Even though the original intro would have been more shocking and crazy, I think they made the right choice doing what they felt was best for the development of the character. Would you have preferred that alternate introduction, or do you like how the Russos ultimately handled it?

Watch: John Williams in Concert at The Hollywood Bowl

0
0

By now, it's clear to everyone that composer/conductor John Williams is utterly brilliant. His five Oscar wins and 50 nominations put him second only to Walt Disney himself as the most nominated person in history, and he's arguably the single most influential individual of all time when it comes to creating film scores. When you have a chance to see a master like this conduct an orchestra in person, you take it, and that's exactly what I did this past Friday night when Williams conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic as they played a selection of his film music at the Hollywood Bowl.

I've interviewed a lot of movie stars for work over the years, but it's rare that I'm in the company of a living legend. Seeing the 84-year-old Williams — who did not act nearly as old as his age may lead you to imagine — in his element was a truly magical experience. After a prelude by conductor David Newman, Williams came out and started with "Flight to Neverland" from Hook, an often-derided Spielberg film I've stuck up for in the past which, regardless of your thoughts on the movie itself, has a wonderful score.

He moved on to a brief selection of music from this year's The BFG before diving headfirst into a galaxy far, far away with music from the Star Wars films as thousands of people lifted colorful illuminated lightsabers in the air. Here's the playlist for that section:

"The Jedi Steps and Finale," from The Force Awakens

"The Asteroid Field," from The Empire Strikes Back

"Princess Leia's Theme," from A New Hope

"The Imperial March," from The Empire Strikes Back

"Rey's Theme," from The Force Awakens

"The Throne Room and End Title" from A New Hope

The score of The Force Awakens was actually one of the most disappointing aspects of that movie for me, largely because I didn't feel it had the same kind of instantly iconic, brash themes that were so prominent in the original trilogy (for me, those big musical moments are very much a part of Star Wars' identity). But one of the effects of seeing snippets of this score played live was making me reconsider my thoughts about The Force Awakens' music, and to make me want to listen to the entire score all the way through without watching the movie (something I haven't carved out time to do yet). "Rey's Theme" is every bit as solid as anything in the original trilogy, and I'm wondering if I'll appreciate any other tracks more if I listen to the score separately.

At the end of the night, Williams came out for an encore and played "Hedwig's Theme" from the Harry Potter films and the iconic "Prelude and Main Title March" from Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie. He wrapped up the performance with a second encore, and chose "Flying" from the E.T. score to send us off (a song I praised in a recent episode of The Not Just New Movies Podcast).

Below, you can watch a video compilation of some of my favorite moments from the evening:

New Season of DOCTOR WHO Will Officially Begin in April

0
0

Thanks to the power of smart phones and social media, we have some confirmation about the start date of Series 10 of Doctor Who! RadioTimes reports that the series will begin in April, but if you don't want to take their word for it, you can hear it from Peter Capaldi himself below.

In case you skipped the video, he said the Christmas Special will happen and then the new season will premiere in April! Of course, fans have been a bit unenthused about the latest run of The Doctor, but I've really enjoyed some episodes of the past two seasons! I think the main problem is that while the standalone episodes are great, the overarching stories of each season have really sucked. Considering we landed on a cliffhanger of Gallifrey possibly being saved, that's saying a lot.

Let's hope the upcoming season is a bit more inspired than the last two have been.
