Video: 24 Reasons All Batman Movies Are The Same

0
0

Our friend Couch Tomato is back with a brand new video, and this one counts down 24 things a majority of Batman movies have in common. As usual, some of these are pretty obvious and some are a bit of a stretch, but the ones I really like are the extremely specific instances, like how the local Gotham news stations really do most of the work for Bruce Wayne when he's investigating something. Check out this and 23 other reasons in the video below:

Here's The Latest Update About TRICK 'R TREAT 2

0
0

I absolutely love writer/director Michael Dougherty's Halloween horror movie Trick 'r Treat. It's the perfect mixture of scares and humor with a great cast and a wonderful concept, all set during an instantly recognizable suburban Halloween. If you haven't seen it, get on that! You won't regret it.

Dougherty and Legendary Pictures announced a sequel a few years ago, but we haven't heard much about it since then. Trick 'r Treat 2 is supposed to expand the world a little bit and incorporate things like witches and ghosts into the mix along with Sam, the little mascot of the first movie. He's hoping to depict a different type of Halloween experience than the Middle America version he showed off the first time around, but we'll have to see how that all shakes out when he finally gets around to making the film.

Speaking with /Film, Dougherty gave an update on the sequel's progress:

I’m going to speak carefully about that [Laughs], because the moment I utter a word about the sequel, everybody starts salivating. It is very much my intention to make the sequel. Legendary is very committed to making the movie. Creatively, it’s in process. When it actually happens, I don’t know. But, hopefully, stuff like this — the digital decorations, the comic books, the merchandise, and what have you — will tide people over and I can finally get around to making it. Nothing would make me happier than returning to that universe. Like, I miss Sam. When we were shooting these vignettes, I was getting a little bit emotional because I would love nothing more than to hang out with Sam again for a year or two, bringing him back to the big screen.

I honestly thought we'd have seen the film by now, but I'm just glad to hear that Dougherty is still interested and Legendary is still committed to making it. At this point, I'm fine with him taking as long as he needs to get the story right — I'll take that over a rushed production to hit a pre-established release date every time.

Are you looking forward to Trick 'r Treat 2?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Was Almost a Zombie Movie!

Early on in the development of the third Captain America film, before it became Civil War, there was talk of giving it a zombie-type story. That's right, Captain America almost took on a horde or zombies! That might have happened if Robert Downey Jr. didn’t sign on to reprise his role as Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. As you know his contract with Marvel was up when Civil War came around, so they had to renegotiate a deal with him, and if things had gone south on that, Captain America and Iron Man would have never faced off.

During an interview with EW, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Joe explained:

“It was not a given that we were even going to do Civil War when we were talking about the next movie after Winter Soldier. So there was a period of time when we explored possibilities for Cap stories that did not include it. We spent a few weeks doing that, although Civil War came up fairly early in the process and once that happened it took over our brains and we ran hard at it.”

He went on to explain how an early version of the story would have included zombies, and it was inspired by a 1976 comic written and illustrated by Jack Kirby:

“There was a period where we did discuss a third act that revolved around the Madbomb from Cap mythology. It didn't have anything to do with Civil War, and if we couldn't get Downey -- in the very, very early conversations before we nailed him -- somebody pitched the idea of a third-act that revolved around the Madbomb, which makes people crazy. It almost like zombifies them -- but not literally. ... The charm of the Madbomb is that you turn hordes of people into berserkers. That was the physical challenge that Cap and company would have had to face.
“The notion of the Madbomb would have been Cap having to fight civilians and how he would he handle that. We were always trying to put him into these interesting moral conundrums because of his nature. That would have made a compelling third act because if civilians are the antagonists, how could he stop them without killing them?”

Anthony added:

“Somebody you know has turned into a zombie and now you have to fight them, and there would have been the emotional component of that.”

The report offers some insight into the Madbomb and what it entailed, saying:

In the comics, it was an A-bomb-like device that came in different sizes and used sonic waves instead of radiation blasts to cause its devastation. It didn’t demolish buildings – it wrecked the minds of everyone in proximity, turning them into a mindless zombie mass, although its victims were still alive and just violently out of their minds rather than undead.

That’s actually a pretty fascinating concept, and I would have actually been ok with that. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Civil War! It’s my favorite Marvel film so far, but this Madbomb concept would have been a great alternative had Iron Man not been in the film.

The 1960s STAR TREK Series Gets an Updated BEYOND Style Trailer

YouTube user Darth Blender has released an updated fan trailer for the original 1960s Star Trek series in the style of Star Trek Beyond. That means that you’re going to here the classic Beastie Boys song “Sabotage” one more time. "Sabotage" is one of my favorite songs ever, so I never get tired of listening to it. The trailer is cut together incredibly well, and if you’re a fan of the original series, you’re gonna enjoy this.

Sam Mendes in Talks to Direct JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH for Disney

Skyfall director Sam Mendez is currently in talks with Disney to direct a live-action adaptation of James and the Giant Peach. Nick Hornby is writing the script for the film. He most recently worked on the wonderful movie Brooklyn, which is a must-see movie.

Back in 1996, Henry Selick directed a stop-motion animated version of Roald Dahl's classic book. It was a decently made film, but Disney obviously feels like now is the time to develop a live-action version. Hell, they are making live-action versions of everything that they currently own the rights to at the moment except Gargoyles

I keep seeing Disney develop these live-action versions of classic animated films, but for some reason, Gargoyles isn't happening. It doesn't make any sense to me. I'd much rather see Mendes direct a Gargoyles movie!

James and the Giant Peach centers on an orphan who is forced to live with his cruel aunts. "James finds a way out of his bleak existence when he discovers an enormous enchanted peach. After rolling into the sea inside the buoyant fruit, James, accompanied by a crew of friendly talking insects, sets sail for New York City."

Striking STRANGER THINGS Fan Art Focuses on The Upside Down

This awesome Stranger Things fan poster comes from the artist Fernando Reza of the Fro Design Company. Ever since Netflix launched this '80s inspired supernatural horror series, the internet has been flooded with incredible fan art. This latest piece puts the focus on The Upside Down, which is the alternate dimension in the story. In fact, that's what the piece is called: "The Upside Down."

The Demogorgon monster is featured front and center with Eleven looking like a complete badass. Then, of course, you’ve got many of the characters and elements from the series in there as well. It’s truly a beautifully dark illustration that was obviously inspired by the movie poster art and fantasy/horror book cover art from the '80s.

The Flash Will Reportedly Face Off Against The Rogues in His Solo Movie

0

I think it's fair to say that Batman has the best Rogues Gallery of villains, but The Flash might have some of the most ridiculous bad guys in comics. Mirror Master? Weather Wizard? Really? It's like the guys at DC who came up with this stuff were backed into a corner with their deadline and just spitballed these characters into existence at the last second. (I say all of this with love, because I actually really enjoy a majority of the Flash villains.)

As the DCEU continues...whatever it is they're doing over there, some news about the upcoming solo film The Flash has hit the internet. El Mayimbe (who started Heroic Hollywood and now works at The Wrap) revealed in a Periscope broadcast that the Rogues will be the villains of Rick Famuyiwa's movie. Traditionally, the main Rogues include Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Pied Piper, The Trickster, The Top, and the aforementioned Mirror Master and Weather Wizard.

Mayimbe wasn't specific about the lineup for the film, but it makes a certain amount of sense that by the time we get to The Flash's solo film in a few years, we may have seen enough of these villains pop up in other movies (like Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang from Suicide Squad) to justify that decision.

I realize this is incredibly unlikely, but how amazing would it be if they got Mark Hamill to reprise his role from the '90s live-action Flash series as The Trickster?

Ezra Miller stars in The Flash, which races into theaters on March 16, 2018.

Josh Boone's THE NEW MUTANTS Film Adds a Couple of Writers

As Gambit is seemingly falling apart at 20th Century Fox (that movie just lost yet another director), the studio is moving full speed ahead on another of its X-Men-related properties.

THR reports that Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the screenwriting team behind films like (500) Days of Summer, The Fault in Our Stars, and The Spectacular Now, has been hired to help director Josh Boone write The New Mutants. (The trio all worked together on The Fault in Our Stars, which was a big hit in 2014.) The lineup of characters is supposedly going to be Mirage, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot, Magik, and Warlock.

Though there are obviously superhero elements to this movie, the idea of writing a film about a group of teens in a school for gifted youngsters seems right up Neustadter and Weber's alley. I'm sure they'll add a lot to the characterizations of this story, and based on their previous work, it's safe to say the film will be improved because of their presence. Here's hoping this movie is a huge hit, so this creative team can take over making X-Men movies and Bryan Singer's old guard falls away into the background. It's time for some new blood in this franchise, and hopefully this configuration is the winning one.

Watch: The Cast Cracks Up in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Gag Reel

Captain America: Civil War ripped the Avengers apart at the seams and pitted them against each other in a massive airport battle that's one of the standout sequences in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. But while the characters were split down the middle, this new gag reel from JoBlo reveals that in real life, the actors were united by one thing: screwing up during takes. Here's a quick look at some of the bloopers and outtakes.

The film hits Blu-ray on September 13, 2016.

MY BLIND BROTHER Trailer: It's an Adam Scott, Jenny Slate, and Nick Kroll Love Triangle

0
0

I'm not the biggest Nick Kroll fan, but that's partially because he seems to be in the same acting mode all the time: total douche. (He plays a literal douche in Sausage Party and played a radio host character named The Douche on Parks and Recreation. It's sort of his "thing.") But this trailer for a film called My Blind Brother has him in a different gear, and considering it reunites him with two of his former Parks and Rec co-stars whom I love — Adam Scott and Jenny Slate — I think it's safe to say this won't be the same old thing from Kroll.

Sophie Goodhart directs this romantic comedy about two brothers, one of whom is blind, who fall for the same girl. It looks like a decent, lighthearted little movie, and we don't have long to wait to see if it's any good — the film arrives in theaters and on VOD in less than a month, starting on September 23, 2016.

JACK GOES HOME Trailer: Rory Culkin Copes with Death in This Psychological Thriller

0
0

Here's the trailer and creepy-ass poster for Jack Goes Home, a new psychological thriller starring Rory Culkin as a guy who goes back to his hometown to attend his father's funeral and discovers some mysterious tapes in the attic. Just as I was ready to write this off as another haunted house movie, the trailer hints that it's possible there's something more devious going on under the surface: maybe someone is just messing with him and trying to get him to go crazy. It's unclear exactly what's going on here, but that's what makes it a good trailer that doesn't ruin the whole movie for you ahead of time.

The full synopsis is pretty detailed:

Jack Thurlowe (Rory Culkin) is a successful magazine editor with a beautiful fiancée Cleo (Britt Robertson) who is seven months pregnant with their first child. However, this perfect life is turned upside down when Jack discovers that his parents have suffered a brutal car accident back in his hometown. His beloved father has perished while his mother Teresa (Lin Shaye) has survived. Upon returning home for the funeral, the volatile nature of Jack and Teresa's relationship boils to the surface and the constant barrage of sympathy from the town starts to weigh on Jack's grieving process.
With the arrival of a mysterious new neighbor, Duncan (Louis Hunter), Jack finds audio recordings and video tapes left behind by his father that lead him to question childhood memories and the very foundation of his identity. With pressure mounting and sanity crumbling, Jack comes to learn that the idyllic world he has believed in since infancy is in fact a nightmare playground full of lies, deception, violence and murder.

Jack Goes Home hits theaters on October 14. What do you think?

Review: DON'T BREATHE is a Relentlessly Effective Thriller

0
0

After remaking Evil Dead in 2013, director Fede Alvarez is back with his sophomore feature Don't Breathe, a startling, twisty thriller that's one of the most intense theatrical experiences I've had this year.

Alvarez and his co-writer Rodo Sayagues set up their premise with a brutally efficient screenplay that establishes everything we need to know in the first few minutes. Rocky (Jane Levy) dreams of leaving Detroit with her younger sister and leaving their terrible family life behind, but she's short on cash. So she and her wannabe gangsta boyfriend Money (Daniel Zovatto) team up with her friend Alex (Dylan Minnette) — who is harboring a major crush on Rocky — to rob houses. Alex's dad works at a security firm, so Alex has easy access to codes that allow them to break into places, steal a few things they can sell, and bail without incident. But Rocky gets fed up with playing the long game and wants to cash in on a huge payday: a blind veteran (a terrifying Stephen Lang) lives in an abandoned section of town and is supposed to have $300,000 in a lock box. Despite Alex's protests, they ultimately decide to go for it, but they quickly realize that they've chosen the wrong old man to mess with. He may be blind, but he knows his house and its dark hallways and basement corridors better than they do, and he's far more dangerous than he looks.

The director utilizes every classical filmmaking trick in the book to heighten suspense, but the movie never feels gimmicky or staged. Early on, he reveals the entire layout of the house with one long continuous shot, familiarizing the audience with every nook and cranny so when the sh*t hits the fan, we're right there with the lead characters and know all of their options for where to hide — and where all of the potential weapons are. In a movie where silence is so important, an A+ use of sound design is essential, and this is one of the areas the film really shines: every creak of the floorboards could mean life or death, and my audience was so engaged, they seemed to be leaning forward in anticipation the entire time.

Without getting too spoilery, I'll mention a few things I didn't particularly care for. At one point Alvarez revels in creating this ultra-disturbing, looming threat of sexual violence, mixing gross-out visuals with a growing sense of dread that got under my skin in a big way. I'll let you watch the movie to figure out what I'm alluding to, but it's one of the film's most unforgettable aspects...and not necessarily in a good way. The opening shot starts in media res, and we quickly flash back and experience nearly the whole movie as a lead-up to that moment; the unfortunate side effect of this, of course, is that some of the tension is removed because we know the story is eventually going to come back around to the events of the opening shot. (I suppose an argument could be made that simply knowing the action contained in the opening shot is coming adds a level of terror to everything that happens before it, because there's an inevitability to the proceedings that can't be escaped. It may function like that for some, but it didn't for me.) And while I wouldn't dream of ruining the ending, I'll just say that I wasn't crazy about the way the final scene concluded.

Don't Breathe definitely got under my skin and made me feel super uncomfortable, but that's clearly the reaction Alvarez wants us to have. I haven't seen his version of Evil Dead, but I heard that movie has a similar devil-may-care attitude about keeping its audience happy; he seems like a filmmaker who doesn't give a crap if his movies make you uneasy, he's just thrilled to have been able to needle you and provoke an emotional (or sometimes physical) response. So while I didn't necessarily love what happened in this movie, I can't deny the skill it took to make it work so well. With plenty of twists and turns you don't see coming, Don't Breathe has definitely skyrocketed Alvarez near the top of my list of directors to keep an eye on. If this film's quality is an indication of the level of his future projects, we may be witnessing the rise of a new master storyteller — albeit one with a slightly sadistic bent.

Chinese Moviegoers Sick After JASON BOURNE Debuts Only in 3D

0
0

Deadline reports many Chinese moviegoers are feeling sick, financially and physically, after seeing Jason Bourne. The film is experiencing a backlash in China after it was released only in 3D on Wednesday with no 2D counterpart. Having personally watched the film in 2D and felt dizzy (and confused as to why the action scenes were blurry most of the time), I can't imagine trying to see it in 3D. Yet that's the only option Chinese fans have at the moment, and Universal is reportedly scrambling to make sure a 2D version is "on the way."

Many Chinese moviegoers believe it's a cheap ploy to boost profits, as 3D films typically run at a higher cost than the traditional film worldwide. I can say I'd feel the same way if I was forced to see a new release in 3D! Especially a film like the new Jason Bourne, which doesn't even lend itself to the format. Hopefully this issue gets resolved quickly.

Video: Fan "Theory" Posits BB-8 is The Key to STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

I know we don't know much about Star Wars: Episode VIII yet, but YouTuber Jenny Nicholson may have blown the whole thing wide open. Just watch this:

Pretty funny stuff. It's so close to the tone of a real fan theory video that it could almost be convincing. She makes some pretty wild leaps, but it has just enough of that "rhyming" theory in there with Darth Vader worshipper Kylo Ren emulating Vader's love for building droids that I can kind of imagine a case where that part ends up actually being true. But mostly it's just the conviction in which she says all of this stuff that gets me — she plays it totally straight the whole time, which just makes the whole thing funnier.

DON'T BREATHE Earns Impressive Thursday Night Screening Numbers of Nearly $2 Million

0
0

Horror film Don't Breathe (which debuts this weekend) is already off to a great start. Deadline reports that box office totals from last night's preview showings of the film around the nation came in at around $1.875 million, which just barely outperforms Lights Out, which opened at $1.8 million last month.

For those not familiar with the film, Don't Breathe is a horror film about a heist gone wrong when three people break into the home of a wealthy blind man. What they don't expect is that the blind man is a near superhuman when it comes to strength and craziness. The film looks nuts, and seeing as it's coming from Evil Dead remake director Fede Alvarez, it probably is! Will you be seeing it? Read our review here.

Netflix Trolls North Korean Imitator Admitting They Are Just A Knock Off of It

Apparently, North Korea isn't as uptight as we all thought. Don't get me wrong, it's still a tyrannical nation with an iron grip on its starving people, but they do have a Netflix. Well, I guess it's more correct to say "we" have a Netflix that was stolen from their clearly superior invention, the "Manbang."

The Verge reports Manbang, contrary to what its name might imply, is the latest technology to get in the streaming game. It allows its users to access North Korean-approved content via the Internet (which they can't actually use), and provide language lessons in English and Russian. You can see the product reveal in the video below.

Netflix, wishing to welcome its new rival, took to Twitter (pictured above) to poke fun at the new technology, which has an interface strikingly similar to its platform. To be honest, I kind of want one so I can see what North Koreans watch in their free time! You think they have House of Cards

Hydraulic Press vs. Carbon Fiber, Diamond, Dynamite, Gummy Bears, and More

One of my recent obsessions is the Hydraulic Press Channel, which has crazy guys from Finland crushing the most random things. I was planning on just sharing their most recent video in which they crush a carbon fiber block and tubes, but we've yet to feature a single one of them here on the site, so I'm including a few more. The Hydraulic Press Channel has about 75 videos, but here are my 10 favorite videos (in no particular order). Warning, these guys drop the F-bomb pretty often, so if you're showing this to kids, turn the volume down.

Sarah Paulson in Talks To Join The Great Cast of OCEAN'S EIGHT

0
0

Ocean's Eight already has an awesome cast with people like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and Awkwafina on board, but that's only seven cast members. As the title of the Ocean's Eleven continuation implies, there needs to be at least one more (plus the antagonist), so we aren't done hearing about the casting process yet. The latest possible addition is, according to Deadline, actress Sarah Paulson, who made a big splash with her Emmy-nominated performance on FX's The People vs. O.J. Simpson earlier this year.

Bullock will lead this sequel as the ex-con sister of George Clooney's Danny Ocean, and she'll recruit her own team to steal a necklace from the Met Ball and frame a villainous gallery owner. Paulson hasn't signed on the dotted line yet, but assuming she does take the role, there's no word on whether she would be playing the eighth member of Bullock's team or if she'd be the gallery owner. Either way, she's clearly talented enough to pull off anything that's asked of her, so this seems like a good fit.
