The Russo Bros. Have Very High Praise for SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING - “The Script Is Amazing”

For those of you hoping that Spider-Man: Homecoming will be a great film, you’ll be happy to hear that the Russo Bros. (The Winter Soldier, Civil War) have nothing but very positive things to say about what director Jon Watts is doing with it.

I was blown away by the early footage screened at Comic-Con. I couldn’t be happier with how Peter Parker and Spider-Man are being portrayed. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 is the best Spider-Man film so far, but according to Anthony Russo, Homecoming might end up being even better! He tells ComicBook.com:

"I think the tone and the direction that he's heading in that movie are fantastic. I think it has the potential to be the best Spider-Man yet, and I know that's saying a lot because perhaps my favorite comic book movie of all time is Raimi's Spider-Man 2."

Anthony goes on to talk about the director of the film and how talented he is and says he wrote an amazing script.

"[Joe and I] love [Jon Watts]. We think he's an incredibly talented filmmaker, super bright guy…  He's crazy talented, the script is amazing, and we have really high expectations for the movie.”

The rest of the fans have high expectations as well, but none of us have actually read the script! Apparently, the directors working on projects at Marvel are always sharing stuff with each other. Seems like it would be a fun work atmosphere to be involved with. When talking about the process of working together these films, Anthony says:

"From a process standpoint, it's like it is with all other Marvel directors. Everybody runs into each other in the hallways, we're passing off story information between each other. I don't necessarily know how much it influenced me yet because we're not involved in it on a day-to-day project, a process, and we've seen as much as everybody else has seen, meaning if you were at Comic-Con and you saw the Comic-Con trailer, that's what we've seen of it."

I can’t wait for the rest of you to get to see what was screened at Comic-Con. Until the first trailer is released, you can read all about that footage here.  Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7th, 2017.

READY PLAYER ONE Set Photos Feature References From GREMLINS, THE FLASH, and More

Steven Spielberg is currently directing a big screen adaptation of the novel Ready Player One, which is a story that pays tribute to the awesomeness of the 1980s. The novel contains a ton of references to Spielberg's classic films, and we'll see a few of them in the movie but not all of them. The director previously explained that he cut a lot of his own references out except for the DeLoreon and apparently Gremlins

Some set photos have surfaced featuring some wall art that will be in the background of the film and that wall art references Gremlins, DC's The Flash, what looks to be Street Fighter, and more. You can see all of the photos below thanks to Twitter user Michelle Green.

The movie stars Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts/Parzival, Olivia Cooke as Samantha Evelyn Cook/Art3mis), Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento), Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow), T.J. Miller as iR0k, Win Morisaki as Daito, Philip Zhao as Shoto, and Mark Rylance as James Halliday, the man responsible for the massive virtual reality video game in the story OASIS.

Below the images you will find a full description of the story. I'm so happy that Spielberg decided to take this film project on. He's the perfect director to bring the story to life, and I have no doubt that he's going to deliver something that fans are going to love.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

John Krasinksi Discusses His JACK RYAN Series, Says He Will Take on ISIS

John Krasinski is the latest actor to take on the role of Tom Clancy’s iconic character Jack Ryan in a new series being produced for Amazon. Krasinski is an interesting choice for the part, but after seeing him in action in Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, there’s no doubt he’ll be able to pull it off.

During a recent interview with Collider, Krasinski talked about his upcoming series and explained that they will be developing 10 movie-sized budget episodes:

“We’re doing 10 episodes and I think the interesting part about it is exactly what you said, everything’s changed so much; the line between film and TV has blurred so much over the years, I think Jack Ryan is a product of that blurring so much that I think that they’re not even really considering it a TV show, they’re calling it a movie that’s being told in 10 parts; and that’s not just an argument of semantics, it’s actually true. Carlton Cuse’s whole plan is we’re gonna shoot it on a movie budget, we’re gonna have the same stunts as movies, it’s gonna feel like a movie but you’re gonna watch it every week. His whole idea was he just felt that two hours wasn’t enough time to tell a Jack Ryan story because Tom Clancy’s books are so detailed and rich, and the character of Jack Ryan if he has a superpower is his intelligence, so there’s a lot of problem solving and things that take time, and that’s the beauty of the spy genre. That’s what I found was the best pitch to me is it’s really just what’s the best format to tell this story?”

We learned early on that the story "follows an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. Ryan (Krasinski) uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the center of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale."

Now we know who the terrorists that Ryan will be dealing with are. Even though there are several books that can be used to be adapted for the series, the creative team decided to take on real-world modern issues. So they will be creating original stories for the show and the first season will focus on ISIS. The actor says:

“Every year they’re gonna be different. They’re sort of more ripped-from-the-headlines type stuff, so the first year the villain or I don’t know what you want to call it is it’s taking on ISIS for sure.”

As a fan of Clancy's Jack Ryan, I’m excited about this series. It’s got a great and talented team developing it. I’m really curious to see how Krasinski measures up to the other actors who have previously played Ryan in the films — Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine

Red Hulk and Iron Spider Were Actually Considered for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

$

Early in the development of Captain America: Civil War, a rumor surfaced that Red Hulk would be in the movie. Turns out that rumor wasn't very far off because the Russo Bros. actually did consider including him in the story.

William Hurt reprised his role of General Thunderbolt Ross in the film, and there was a chance that we would have seen him transform into the Red Hulk! During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Joe Russo explains:

"We had so many characters in that movie as it was. We consider everything, obviously, but with so many characters in that movie as it was to try and entertain adding another character and to get to the Red Hulk, you have to add a back story. You have to substantiate the narrative to get to that. [Thaddeus Ross], on our list of priorities, he was there sort of as the government's agenda and not to add another complicated super powered character to the mix."

Even though Red Hulk didn't pop up in Civil War, it doesn't mean that he won't make an appearance somewhere down the road. That goes for several other characters that haven't been introduced into the MCU yet. In regards to that, Joe says:

"We had a board when we started this process of the movies with these Avengers characters that have ever graced the screen in a Marvel film and a list of characters that we have at our disposal that haven't graced the screen. We spent the last six to eight months crafting stories around the cornucopia of characters at our disposal so anything is possible."

Like Joe said, if they can give a character a proper narrative they can fit that character into any movie. Of course, it would also have to work for the story they are telling. Joe goes on to reveal that they also considered using Iron Spider. When asked about it, he said:

"Again, that falls in that category of anything's possible. We consider everything."

If they considered everything for Civil War, you know they are considering everything for Avengers: Infinity War. We know that the Avengers will be teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, but what other new characters will be thrown into the mix? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. It would be awesome to one day see Red Hulk and Iron Spider show up one day.

Actor Ben Schwartz Confirms Steve From STRANGER THINGS Is PARKS AND REC's Jean-Ralphio's Father

In weird fan theories we desperately want to be true, a chunk of the internet would like to believe that Steve, the playboy from Stranger Things, is the future father of Parks And Recreation's Jean-Ralphio. Pawnee and Hawkins are both fictional towns just south of Indianapolis, and they look A LOT alike.

Now, actor Ben Schwartz (who plays Jean-Ralphio) went to James Corden and confirmed the theory in a hilarious video. Watch it below.

Tension Between Vin Diesel and The Rock On FAST 8 Rumored To Be WWE Set Up

So remember how The Rock went to Instagram and said one of his costars was a "Candy Ass" and that he will look mad during some scenes of Fast 8 because he was actually mad on the set? Rumors are circulating via a report by Life and Style Magazine that the entire thing is a ploy to advertise a WWE match. They did say, however, that the event was grounded in some truth.

I'm just going to go on the record that I think whoever told Life and Style Magazine that is straight up lying. In no way do I ever see Vin Diesel stepping in a ring to wrestle one of WWE's most prolific and protected stars without having him annihilate (in a wrestling way) Diesel...and I don't think Diesel would agree to that either. Add that to the fact that The Rock hasn't actually wrestled in WWE for quite a few years and I think someone just made up a story to get some attention or they heard whisperings about something that will 100% fall through before Wrestlemania.

You'd think it would be cool...but it wouldn't be. Every time a celebrity wrestles in WWE, it's just awkward and weird. It would be like you trying to bat in a major league baseball game. You think you know what to do, but you don't realize you don't until you're up there.

Case in point? David Arquette:

Really, the only exception is Pee-Wee Herman. If it's something like that, I'll accept it, but otherwise, no dice!

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR — Joe Russo On Attempting To Improve Upon CIVIL WAR

$

Marvel Studios has been churning out quality films for a while now, and while they all aren't bright spots (Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3) it's fair to say that most of them are pretty good, if not great. With Captain America: Civil War, Marvel put it all together. They gave us a fast-paced action-adventure film with fun and exhilarating set-pieces, the welcome comedic interaction between a cast of intriguing characters who all seem to fit into the story organically, and a great story in itself. Returning to the helm of the franchise with Avengers: Infinity War, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo offer an impressive track record in the MCU thus far, arguably making two of the best films in the Marvel Universe (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War). It's certainly exciting to have The Russo Brothers sharing the director's chair once again, but it begs the question: How can you top Civil War? Is there pressure? Here's director Joe Russo with the answer (courtesy of Comicbook.com):

"It's tricky, there could be a lot of pressure. We put pressure on ourselves, we feel the pressure. At the same time we have to be very zen and we have to step outside of that pressure because if you make decisions based on expectations and based on feeling that pressure, you're going to make bad decisions."

Yeah, it'll be tricky! They juggled twelve heroes in Civil War but seemed to find a certain place for everyone that worked within the film's overall narrative. Infinity War is aiming to find a place for every hero that's been introduced thus far in the MCU and with a film that jam-packed, it's going to be difficult to pull off. Joe elaborates:

"Ultimately, at the end of the day, the thing that we prioritize above all else is storytelling, and we just focus on the storytelling and the characters and how they fit into the narrative, and we just keep trying to tell the best story that we can every time out. That's all about script work, there's an intense amount of script work that we put in. It's months and months spent in a room with us and with [Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely talking through the story, talking through the characters, turning over every stone, rewriting every scene, talking about whether this is the best line into a scene, best line out of a scene, is this the best execution of this scene, what else could the story be here."

It's awesome to hear the effort that they're putting in on this film as it's definitely one that can't be approached haphazardly. With so much going on, it's going to be interesting to see how they can make a cohesive film, but they're not trying to think about it too much:

"We try to ignore any sort of external pressures because they can just lead you to a bad place creatively."

I'm pretty excited to see the fruits of their labor, but we're still going to have to wait until 2018 to witness Infinity War and 2019 for the yet-to-be-named Avengers 4. Are you excited for Avengers: Infinity War? Think it'll top Civil War? Let us know in the comments below!

Dev Patel Tries To Find His Way Home in LION Trailer

Like most of the rest of the world, I first saw actor Dev Patel in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, and the trailer for his newest film, Lion, has some shades of that movie in it. In this true-life story, Patel plays Saroo Khan, a man who uses Google Earth to attempt to find the family he lost as a young boy (the flashbacks seem very Slumdog-esque). Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman, and David Wenham co-star, and this is being positioned as an awards contender, but I'm not really concerned with how many awards it might win; I just want it to be a good movie.

Check out the trailer below, courtesy of USA TodayLion arrives in theaters on November 25, 2016.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Director Finds New Sci-Fi Project CAPTIVE STATE

Rupert Wyatt, director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, has found a new project. Variety reports the director will helm the upcoming science fiction film Captive State, which he co-wrote with his wife. Not much is known about the film at this time other than it's a genre movie and that a lot of studios are vying for the opportunity to release it.

Since the Apes reboot, Wyatt has also worked on the upcoming Fox series based on The Exorcist as an executive producer and director.

I'm always down for some more sci-fi and I liked Rise of the Planet of The Apes! Bring it!

The same guy who made The Binks Awakens is back with a new parody trailer, and this time he's putting the Star Wars franchise's worst character into the action of the latest trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I think it's safe to say that as long as there are new Star Wars movies (so...basically forever), fans can expect Jar Jar Binks parodies like this to keep popping up. The character is just so embarrassingly terrible on every level that he's the perfect juxtaposition for footage that tries to make anything SW-related look cool.

Bryan Singer Says New Show LEGION is "Part Of The X-MEN Universe"

Bryan Singer has officially confirmed that Marvel's new mutant television series Legion will take place within the X-Men universe. THR says Singer, along with Fox executive Peter Rice (Legion will air on FX), spoke about the new show at the Edinburgh Television Festival:

"(It's) part of the X-Men universe, but when you watched it, you wouldn't have to label it, it could exist completely on its own."

Ideally, I think that's the way I would want it. Acknowledge the fact that there are other mutants, but don't leave the audience wondering why Professor X isn't helping them. Not much else was said about the upcoming show, but Singer did talk about the stressful beginning to the X-Men franchise that would go on to spark a wave of superhero films:

"X-Men collapsed. We lost our entire crew, we couldn’t get a budget or script or anything. At one point, it was myself, my friend Tom DeSanto and you, the three of us sitting on the floor of the Spanish Broadcasting Building … in a little tiny office pasting pieces of paper together, trying to construct a story.”

That's pretty crazy to think about a world where X-Men may not have happened. Would Spider-Man have been enough to bring Marvel back into their own studio? Probably, but X-Men instilled the confidence that there was indeed a demand for superhero films.

In either case, I am super excited to check out Legion! I've always been interested in the expanded mutant universe, so I hope this doesn't disappoint.

Video: Batman Costume Breaks Guinness Record For Most Functional Gadgets on a Cosplay Suit

We've covered a ton of jaw-dropping cosplay over the years, but I don't know if we've ever written about one that's broken a Guinness World Record. That changes today, as LaughingSquid points us to the story of art director Julian Checkley, who used his experience building props and costumes for the film industry to create a Batman costume that features a staggering twenty-three functional gadgets on it. I'm not really into cosplay myself, but even I have to admit this thing is pretty badass.

Devices include smoke bombs, a grapnel gun and ‘bat tracker’, UV lamp, NBC (nuclear, bacterial, chemical) bat respirator and even a bat sign projector for the night sky.
The suit, which is based on Bruce Wayne’s outfit from the Batman: Arkham Origins videogame, was 3D printed and then moulded and cast in a flexible urethane rubber.

Steve Rogers is No Longer Captain America in The Marvel Cinematic Universe

$

After brawling with Iron Man at the end of Captain America: Civil War, Chris Evans' Steve Rogers leaves his shield behind and walks away with Bucky. In an interview with The Huffington Post, co-director Joe Russo revealed that Cap is no longer officially Cap in the MCU:

“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity. [It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

Evans is coming back for Avengers: Infinity War, so he'll likely suit up in the red, white, and blue once again. But HuffPo posits a theory that before he does, he might mirror the character's journey in the comics and wander around with the name Nomad, an identity Rogers adopted when he was disillusioned by the government in the '70s. There's also the chance, of course, that Bucky or Falcon could take up the shield in his place (maybe Thanos kills Steve in the opening minutes of Infinity War, and that's the inciting incident that reunites the Avengers?). But it might be a while before Bucky wields the shield, since he's currently on ice in Wakanda.

We'll find out when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.

Real Robots React To The Trailer For Sci-Fi Movie MORGAN

I saw a screening of the science fiction film Morgan the other day, but I'm not allowed to tell you what I thought about it yet. In any case, the Luke Scott-directed, Ridley Scott-produced film (it's a family affair) hits theaters on September 2nd, and in an effort to get people talking about it, 20th Century Fox's marketing team has utilized a tactic I don't think I've seen really seen before: they showed the trailer to two functioning robots and filmed the robots' reactions.

Ironically, the one on the left, magicLab’s EDI (Electronic Deceptive Intelligence), is much more vocal and expressive than the one on the right, which is called FACE (Facial Automation for Conveying Emotions). Check it out:

I'm still impressed that You're Next and The Guest director Adam Wingard was able to pull off making a Blair Witch sequel without the mainstream public knowing about it before its official reveal at this year's Comic-Con. Some in the horror community had heard whispers of the film's true identity, but for most, that kind of surprise is rare in Hollywood. (Read more about that here.)

Early word claims the movie is absolutely terrifying, and we'll all be able to see it for ourselves when it hits theaters on September 16th. Today, Lionsgate has released a new poster (above) and trailer through Collider that takes the scares underground, adding claustrophobia as yet another way this movie might freak people out. Denzel Washington Might Star in INNER CITY, The Next Movie From NIGHTCRAWLER's Dan Gilroy

Nightcrawler was one of my favorite movies of 2014, and it was even more impressive that it was the feature directorial debut of writer/director Dan Gilroy. I've been anxiously waiting to hear what his next movie would be, and now Variety says he's just finished the script for a film called Inner City, which also takes place in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles. The tone is being compared to that of the Paul Newman film The Verdict; further details are scarce, but The Playlist claims the plot centers on "an ambulance chasing lawyer who takes over a business when his boss falls sick, but who only manages to mess everything up."

The best part? Denzel Washington is reportedly eyeing the lead role. Apparently there's a ton of interest from major studios — and Netflix — leading Variety to guess that this is going to be one of the biggest sales of the fall season. I hope this pans out, because Washington is obviously a phenomenal talent and if Nightcrawler is any indication, I'd love to see him work with Gilroy on a dark, skeezy project.
