Stan Lee Supports Casting of Zendaya in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

As if it would come as any surprise, Stan Lee has no issue with Zendaya being cast in the role of Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Collider reports that the Spider-Man creator talked to the Toronto Sun and said this about the actress:

“If she is as good an actress as I hear she is, I think it’ll be absolutely wonderful … The colour of their skin doesn’t matter, their religion doesn’t matter. All that matters is that this the right person for the role.”

Not too surprisingly, many of the founders of the comic book world were far ahead of their time in representing minorities in comics. From what I saw at SDCC, I think people will like Zendaya as MJ, even if she's a little different than the version we all know.

Side note: I've heard a lot of people who've made the remark they have "no idea" who Zendaya is. You probably do, you just haven't made the connection. If you have kids who watch Disney Channel, she's K.C. Undercover or the star of Shake it Up or in the movie Zapped. You literally can't turn that channel on without seeing her! She also sings this song:

THE PREQUELS STRIKE BACK Trailer: This Documentary Wants Us to Reconsider The Worst STAR WARS Movies

It's going to take a hell of a lot of convincing to get me (and many other Star Wars fans) to appreciate George Lucas's prequels as anything other than a step forward in the then-burgeoning art of digital filmmaking. But a new documentary called The Prequels Strike Back: A Fan's Journey seems to want to convince us that the three largely-reviled films deserve to be reconsidered. Featuring interviews with prominent film critics (and Kevin Smith), Bradley Weatherholt's doc nevertheless seems like something I'd be interested in watching, even if I don't ultimately change my mind about the movies. But hey — maybe there's some revelation or insight in here that does completely alter my perception of these films on a fundamental level. I'll never know unless I watch it.

The Prequels Strike Back hits VOD on September 14.

An ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE Sequel is In The Works

Rovio Entertainment, the creators of Angry Birds, have confirmed they are working on a follow up to The Angry Birds Movie. The news comes from The Wall Street Journal, who got the news about the sequel from Rovio Chief Executive Kati Levoranta

While a critical failure, the movie grossed $346 million worldwide, making it the second largest grossing video game movie of all time. No word as to whether any of the cast will re-lend their voices to the film, but if I had to guess, I would say they aren't going to say no to heaps of money.

Watch: Guy Freaks Out After Seeing Awesome POWER RANGERS Cosplay

Every time I see someone cosplay at a convention, I have to ask myself why. They're constantly bombarded with picture requests, sweating off pound after pound of water weight, and putting their handiwork through a stress test it may not survive. It took one video on Reddit of this fan absolutely nerding out after seeing this Power Rangers cosplay, and I think I get it now. Also, I kind of want to cosplay.

See the hilarious reaction below.

Gareth Edwards Reveals The Meaning(s) Behind ROGUE ONE's Title

We're less than four months away from a new Star Wars movie. We know that the "A Star Wars Story" part of the upcoming movie's title is the designation for the non-saga films, but even though we've written tons of articles about the movie since it was officially announced, we still aren't exactly sure what the "Rogue One" part actually means. Enter director Gareth Edwards, who revealed the answer to Empire Magazine:

“What does it mean? 'Rogue One’ is a military call sign to some extent,” he adds, referring to Red Squadron during the Battle of Yavin, "but this is the first film that's gone off-piste and is not part of the saga – or the Anakin story – so it’s the 'rogue' one, you know?”

Clever. I dig the double meaning. But apparently there's yet another layer of meaning on top of those two, and it has to do with Felicity Jones' rebellious Jyn Erso character:

“It's kind of describing her as well in a similar way,” says Edwards. “It has [all] these split, multiple meanings that made it feel like the right choice."

There you have it. Nothing majorly revelatory, but cool to hear nonetheless.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

Dan Harmon Hired to Co-Write Marvel Studios' DOCTOR STRANGE

Marvel Studios' upcoming film Doctor Strange has reportedly received from writing help from a...well, a somewhat strange source.

THR reports that Dan Harmon, the creator of Community and co-creator of Rick and Morty, was hired to co-write the screenplay for the Benedict Cumberbatch starrer. This is the first time Harmon has been a part of a project this scale, and the first time he's written for a superhero movie.

The Hollywood Reporter's sources tell them Harmon was hired after principal photography wrapped and his job was to write pages "for additional photography." This kind of punch-up work happens all the time on this level, but it's notable that Marvel would hire Harmon here because they've made two of his Community director/producers, The Russo Brothers, a major creative guiding force behind some of the studio's biggest films (including the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War).

Doctor Strange originally had a script by Jon Spaihts (who will now received a "story by" credit), and director Scott Derrickson co-wrote the screenplay with his Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill. Here's hoping adding one more name to the mix won't be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen, and will instead result in a nice bit of extra spice that could liven things up a bit. The film hits theaters on November 4, 2016.

Warner Bros.' JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Movie Will Be Directed By Doug Liman

For years, Guillermo del Toro was developing a Justice League Dark film for Warner Bros. He eventually dropped out of the project and an animated film was announced. After I heard there was going to be an animated movie, I wasn't sure if the live action movie was still in play. I guess it is, because Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has reportedly been hired to direct it.

Liman was supposed to be directing the Gambit movie for Fox, but according to Variety, he has officially left that project to take on this one. There's no word on who will take on Gambit next, but that movie has had some serious problems with locking down a director.

Liman is a solid director who has also directed films such as Swingers, Go, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and more. I think he's a good pick for the project, but I would have much rather seen del Toro do it. It's a shame WB never moved forward with that vision.

The story, which is also known as Dark Universe, will revolve around a supernatural team of heroes that consists of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon. There are no details on the plot, but they will obviously come together to fight some kind of evil entity.

What do you all think of Liman taking on Justice League Dark for WB?

Jon Favreau's THE JUNGLE BOOK Gets an Honest Trailer

Joey absolutely loved Jon Favreau's take on The Jungle Book earlier this year, and I enjoyed the film as well. The voice work was excellent and the story was pretty solid, but it was really the unbelievable visuals that took it over the top for me and truly justified the film's existence.

After giving the 1967 animated version of The Jungle Book the Honest Trailer treatment, Screen Junkies is back to do the same for Favreau's version — and this is one of the rare times when they do more praising of a movie than tearing it down. Check it out:

THE DISAPPOINTMENTS ROOM Trailer: Don't Open That Door

D.J. Caruso had a bit of a moment in the mid-2000s where it appeared he was going to be the hot new director to watch, directing Disturbia and Eagle Eye and being attached to film adaptations of Y: The Last Man and Preacher that never came to pass. But he ended up helming I Am Number Four in 2011 and his career took a big hit. He's on the rise again with xXx: The Return of Xander Cage under his belt for a release next year, but before that, we'll see him tackle a horror movie called The Disappointments Room that he co-wrote with Prison Break star Wentworth Miller.

Unfortunately, it looks like a by-the-numbers haunted house movie that treads ground we've seen covered hundreds of times before. Unless there's a huge twist or mega surprise brewing here, I can already tell I'll be skipping this one. To be fair, this isn't my favorite genre, so if you dig films like this, you may end up liking this one quite a bit. Let me know what you think below.

In this psychological thriller from the director of Eagle Eye and Disturbia, Dana and David move from Brooklyn to a once-grand southern mansion with their 5 year old son looking for a fresh start. But Dana’s discovery of a secret room unleashes unexplainable events that test her sanity and slowly reveal the home’s terrifying past.
Kate Beckinsale (Underworld, Total Recall), Mel Raido (Legend), with Gerald McRaney (Focus, The Best of Me) and Lucas Till (X-Men: Apocalypse, TV’s “MacGyver”) round out D.J. Caruso's all-star cast.

The Disappointments Room hits theaters on September 9, 2016.

John Krasinski Talks About His Failed CAPTAIN AMERICA Audition

Before Captain America: The First Avenger came out in 2011, I remember pulling really hard for The Office star John Krasinski to score the role of Cap in the movie. I thought he represented an early version of the kind of outside the box casting Marvel Studios utilized when they cast fellow sitcom actor Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, but Chris Evans ultimately ended up being an excellent fit for the part.

Krasinski hasn't spoken too much about his Cap audition as far as I can tell, but when Conan O'Brien asked him about it on a recent episode of his show, he told a humorous story about why he thinks he didn't get the part.

Video Essay Analyzes Proper Uses of Jump Scares in Movies

LaughingSquid points us to a new video essay from Now You See It, in which the host analyzes the proper use of the much-maligned "jump scare" in movies. Yes, jump scares are often terrible, and the host freely admits as much, but he makes the case for why and how they can be used well in films, using memorable examples from The Lord of the Rings, The Sixth Sense, and Poltergeist to illustrate his point. What's the best and worst cinematic jump scare you can think of? That LOTR moment is pretty high on my list, but what about you?

Jon Favreau to Direct Seth MacFarlane's Sci-Fi Comedic Drama Series for Fox

Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Jungles Book) has signed on to direct the pilot episode for Seth MacFarlane's latest TV series, which he will also be an executive producer on. The untitled show is a sci-fi comedy drama that is set in space 300 years in the future.

The story follows the adventures of the Orville, "a not-so-top-of-the-line exploratory ship in Earth’s interstellar fleet." MacFarlane created the series and wrote the script for the pilot. He will also star in the series alongside Adrianne Palicki and Scott Grimes, Peter Macon and J Lee, who are all playing members of the ship’s crew.

This seems like a great project for Favreau to take on. It seems like a series he could have a lot of fun with. Production for the pilot is set to start in January 2017, after that the director will stay on as a consultant.

MacFarlane is a pretty hilarious guy and I'm curious to see him play in the sci-fi genre. I'm sure he and Favreau will make a great team.

Christoph Waltz in Talks to Star in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL From Producer James Cameron

Robert Rodriguez is currently preparing to direct Alita: Battle Angel for producer James Cameron. I wish Cameron would direct it himself, but he'll be busy directing Avatar films the rest of his life.

Variety is reporting that Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterdsis currently in negotiations to jump on board the project. If he's cast, he will join Rosa Salazar (The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), who is playing Alita, a 26th century cyborg who’s rescued from a scrapyard and reassembled.

"The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. Within the context of an epic action-adventure, the film will explore a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and finding love."

According to the report, Waltz would play the character Doctor Dyson Ido, who is the cybersurgeon who finds the cyborg and becomes her mentor. It's a role that Waltz would be perfect for, so I hope the negotiations go smoothly.

The project is set up at Fox, and they've set the release date for July 20th, 2018. This is such a great story, and it has the potential to be a spectacularly awesome film. Hopefully, it reaches its full potential.

Who Should Direct CAPTAIN MARVEL? Marvel Narrows Their Search Down to 3 Choices

who-should-direct-captain-marvel-marvel-narrows-there-search-down-to-3-choices

Marvel Studios is closing in on hiring a director to helm Brie Larson in Captain Marvel. According to THR, the studio has narrowed it down to three directors, who are Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria.

Niki Caro has been mentioned as a possibility before. She is the director of the wonderfully made 2002 film Whale Rider. She went on to direct Charlize Theron in a film called North Country; Kevin Costner in McFarland, USA; and Jessica Chastain in The Zookeeper’s Wife. Caro is a solid storyteller who has made some fantastic films.

Lesli Linka Glatter comes from the TV side of entertainment. She has directed episodes of several hit cable series that include Homeland, Ray Donovan, The Newsroom, True Blood, Mad Men, ER, and The West Wing. Since TV series kind of have their own style, it’s hard to tell what she could bring to the table for Captain Marvel.

Lorene Scafaria broke into the industry with the script for Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist with Micheal Cera and Kat Dennings. That was a fun quirky coming-of-age teenage movie that led her to her first directing gig for a film called Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which starred Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. She also wrote and directed Rose Byrne and Susan Sarandon in the film The Meddler. All of the films she’s worked on have a quirky and witty vibe to them.

Out of those three choices, I’d have to say that my favorite is Caro. Judging from the films that she’s made, I think she could bring something special to Captain Marvel in the way she tells her stories and develops her characters.

If you don’t like any of the directors on the list, who would you like to see take on the film? As you know, Marvel wants a female director to tackle it. Who would you choose?

New Photos Surface from The GHOST IN THE SHELL Movie Featuring Section 9 Characters

A collection of low-quality photos has surfaced from director Rupert Sanders' live-action Ghost in the Shell film adaptation. The images feature the characters that make up Section 9, and they are in costume. Those characters include The Major (Scarlett Johansson), Ishikawa (Lasarus Ratuere), Togusa (Chin Han), Saito (Yutaka Izumihara), Borma (Tawanda Manyimo), Batou (Pilou Asbæk), and Aramaki (Takeshi Kitano). I’ve gotta say, all the characters look great. I wish we had some high res photos, but these will have to do for now.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “Ghost in the Shell” follows a female special ops cyborg who leads an elite task force called Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. Section 9 is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man whose singular goal is towipe out Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology.

I know a lot of fans have expressed some disappointment in this movie, but I’m curious to see how it turns out. I really hope that it ends up exceeding expectations.

The movie is currently set to be released on March 31st, 2017, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we get to see some actual footage from the movie.
