Kit Harington Was Disappointed That Death Didn't Dramatically Change GAME OF THRONES' Jon Snow

0
0

After the sixth season of Game of Thrones, I wrote a piece about how Jon Snow's resurrection was one of the worst aspects of the season. You can read the full piece, but essentially, my argument boiled down to the idea that, despite promises that Jon would be dramatically changed by his death and resurrection, we never saw Jon experience that dramatic change. He was basically the same character before and after that event. The showrunners blew it.

Now, in an interview with The Wrap, actor Kit Harington basically agreed with that assessment — though he does so diplomatically:

"I knew I was coming back to life, but I didn’t know if I’d come back as a changed person, as a villain. So I couldn’t pre-plan anything, which was hard.

And then I got the scripts, and actually, he comes back as himself, as the Jon that everyone knows. Which at first I found disappointing. But it’s more subtle than that. He has an insight into what lies beyond that very few people in his world do, and that no one in our world does—he knows that there’s no afterlife. Which does quietly drive who he is and what he wants to do."

"Subtle" is a generous way of looking at it, because while the idea of Jon knowing there's no afterlife sounds powerful, I don't think the show did enough to get that idea across. Yes, he mentions it a time or two, but I didn't feel like we felt the impact of that knowledge on the decisions his character makes, or that we ever felt him come to grips with what that really means.

I guess we have two more seasons (about thirteen hours) to find out if the showrunners can do a better job of getting that across in Jon's character.

Check Out This All-Encompassing LORD OF THE RINGS/HOBBIT Blu-ray Box Set

0

If for some strange reason you want to see even more of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy besides the story they've already stretched into three films, good news: io9 points us to a new Amazon listing for the Middle-earth Limited Collector's Edition, a massive set that contains 30 (!) discs featuring extended cuts of every one of Jackson's Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies. They also include all of the bonus features from all of the previously-released extended editions, which is a stunning amount of content by itself.

Each film is encased in a fake leather book and sits atop a collectible Hobbit-style wood shelf that was "crafted from solid wood with design selected by Peter Jackson." And on top of that, the set includes a "spectacular 100-page sketch-style book with replica The Red Book of Westmarch, filled with original film sketches and new artwork," and "original reproductions of exquisite watercolor paintings by acclaimed conceptual artists Alan Lee and John Howe, framable and wall-ready."

The price tag has since been removed from the site, but Amazon initially had it labeled as costing a staggering $800, so we'll have to see if someone got their wires crossed on that or if this is actually going to be one of the most expensive box sets ever created.

Since The Hobbit movies are hot garbage with precious few glimmers of goodness (Martin Freeman's Bilbo is solid, though he's inexplicably not even the main character of his own trilogy), I'm perfectly content to never watch those films again and chill out with my LOTR extended edition Blu-ray set. Would you fork over $800 for this set?

Rumor: Netflix's PUNISHER Series Holding Auditions For First Major Casting

0
0

A couple days ago, I said that the rumors we could see The Punisher in 2017 were not credible due to lack of casting news, and now we get this! ScreenCrush relays a report from MCU Exchange that a casting role is floating around Hollywood for the character of "Dennis Landstrom," which sounds like a fake name for David Lieberman — aka Micro.

For those unaware, Micro is a longtime ally to Frank Castle in the comics who's recently been depicted as a villain. There are many layers to this rumor, so don't get too excited:

  1. The casting is for Dennis Landstrom...which, even if MCU Exchange is drawing connections, isn't an outright announcement for a "Micro" casting.
  2. Even though the character is heavily involved in The Punisher series, it could very well mean that the character would be appearing in The Defenders, which is actually slated for 2017.

That said, we did see Micro's name on a CD inside Frank Castle's home in Daredevil, so maybe it's legit? Either way, I still think it's next to impossible we will see a full season of The Punisher in 2017.

John Turturro is Reportedly Filming a BIG LEBOWSKI Spin-Off About Jesus Quintana

0
0

John Turturro has been delivering great performances week after week as a disheveled, eczema-riddled lawyer on HBO's crime drama The Night Of (a show with a major problem), but right now he's in the middle of revisiting a character we've seen him play before: pederast bowler Jesus Quintana from The Coen Brothers' cult classic film The Big Lebowski.

Birth.Movies.Death says that Turturro's new movie Going Places, "a remake of a French sex farce, is actually a Big Lebowski spin-off centered around Turturro’s Jesus Quintana character."

The project has already begun filming with a script by Turturro and a cast that includes Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou, and Susan Sarandon. The film, which currently has no distributor (thus making it an indie in the realest sense), takes its plot from the 1974 comedy Les Valseuses: two petty thieves, Turturro’s Jesus and Cannavale’s Petey, compete to give a woman (Tautou) her first orgasm after she’s roped into their hijinks. Sarandon also ends up in their company, playing a criminal who just got out after a long stint in prison.

There's no word yet about whether the film is set in modern day, or perhaps closer to the events we saw depicted in The Big Lebowski, but Turturro has been talking about making a sequel/spin-off for years, and it looks like he's finally made his dream come true. The report says they're a week or two into filming in New York, so I'd expect us to be able to see the film sometime next year.

NSFW Jesus highlights from The Big Lebowski below:

Hollywood is Getting Its Own Pop Up STAR WARS Cantina

0
0

It's a scenario a lot of us have probably imagined: what would it be like to actually sit around and have a drink in the Mos Eisley Cantina from Star Wars? If you're in Hollywood, soon you'll be able to find out.

Nerdist reports that a pop up called Scum & Villainy Cantina is coming to Hollywood sometime this winter, and their official website describes what you get if you reserve a spot:

Included with your reservation is two drinks of your choice, a souvenir pint glass, Scum and Villainy challenge coin, a few extra surprises, and two hours of the most immersive galactic scenery this far into the outer-rim.

I'm guessing one of those "extra surprises" is going to be some sort of performance of the iconic song that plays in the cantina in the film, because how could you possibly create a pop up without including that element? Hit up the official website for more details. They start taking reservations soon, and considering how often Hollywood residents go apeshit for trendy spots like this, I'm guessing it'll be a bit of a challenge to secure a spot. Good luck, and may the Force be with you.

Watch: New CBS Docu-Series Attempts to Find Out What Happened to JonBenét Ramsey

0
0

Not content with sitting on the sidelines while true crime stories become all the rage elsewhere on the small screen, CBS has unveiled the first look at the network's upcoming docu-series The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey, a new show that will attempt to solve the presumed murder that captivated the nation back in 1996.

I like the way Vanity Fair breaks down the gist of the case:

Most people at least remember the basic narrative of the tragedy: JonBenét, a six-year-old pageant star, was reported missing and subsequently found dead in her family’s basement eight hours later. For a long time, the focus was on Ramsey’s parents and brother Burke, who was nine years old at the time of her murder. But in 2008, DNA evidence that suggested the killer was an unknown man led the Boulder district attorney to publicly exonerate the Ramsey family and apologize.

This show unites brand new investigators with those who worked on the case twenty years ago, and they've recreated the Ramsey home in a soundstage to allow the experts to physically walk through the scene to examine the crime with fresh eyes. With things like FX's American Crime Story, ESPN's terrific O.J. Simpson documentary Made in America, Netflix's Making a Murderer, and the first season of Serial, real life crime stories are all the rage right now. And while any revelations that come out of this may not be as shocking as what happened at the end of HBO's The Jinx, it could still be a good show on its own.

I don't know, though — I'm starting to wonder if we as a culture are starting to lose touch with the real people involved with these cases and instead are just looking to be entertained by these stories the same way we would be reading a good crime novel or something. But these things happened to actual people, and it might be a good time for all of us to take a step back and examine why we're watching this stuff before things get too far out of hand. I'm including myself in that suggestion, by the way, because I've watched or listened to all of those things I mentioned. I'm not trying to judge anyone...just sort of wondering aloud.

The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey will air in three parts, premiering on CBS on September 18th at 8:30 pm, and followed by the last two installments airing on September 19th at 9 pm and September 25th at 8:30 pm.

Hulu is Bringing Marvel's RUNAWAYS To The Small Screen

0
0

Marvel has been trying to adapt Runaways into a movie for a very long time, with Joss Whedon once looking at directing it pre-Avengers, Drew Pearce writing the screenplay, and the studio gearing up for a shoot in 2011. But they ended up pressing pause in order to better develop The Avengers and Iron Man 3, and the project has basically been idle since then. Now Marvel has announced that the adaptation will happen after all, not as a movie, but as a TV show for Hulu. Gossip Girl/The O.C. showrunners/writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will perform those same duties for this series.

"We've known the Runaways' story would make great television," said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, "and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie--who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience--write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable."

Marvel's Runaways was created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, and centers on a group of kids who discover that their parents are supervillains that are part of a group called The Pride, so the kids band together and use their own powers and tech to fight against them. We don't know which lineup of characters will appear in the show, but Birth.Movies.Death has a good breakdown of the main players in the initial comics series:

Niko - a witch who can use dark magic.
Karolina - an openly gay extraterrestrial, her parents are Hollywood stars when they're not being secret supervillains.
Molly - the youngest of the group, she's an 11 year old with super strength and invulnerability.
Chase - the bro of the group, he uses his mad scientist parents' flame gloves, the Fistigons.
Alex - the child of mob bosses, he has a heightened intellect.
Gertrude - her mom and dad are time travelers, and she has a telepathic connection with a velociraptor named Old Lace who is her best bud.
There are other members who join later, but one later member who is introduced in the first issue is Victor Mancha, a cyborg created by Ultron.

I haven't read any of these comics, but this sounds like a truly awesome story. With Schwartz and Savage running the show, it seems obvious that they'll be going after a millennial audience, but will older audiences dig it as well? We'll have to wait and see, but we'll keep you posted about more details when we hear about them.

ZOOM Trailer: Alison Pill Plays an Artist Whose Drawings Come Alive

0
0

Here's the first official trailer for Zoom, a new movie in which Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Goon) plays an artist whose drawings come to life, containing a meta, layered narrative that collapses in on itself. It's easier to just watch the trailer, and then read the synopsis from last year's Toronto International Film Festival to get a better sense of what's really going on:

Emma (Alison Pill) is a comic-book artist who works by day in a factory that makes sex dolls, which is messing with her head. In an attempt to get herself closer to the plastic fantasy image that surrounds her, she makes a rash decision. Then she decides she wants to reverse that choice, but it’s too late and too expensive to turn back. Fortunately, Michelle (Mariana Ximenes), the aspiring novelist writing Emma’s story, gives her a way out. In turn, Emma controls the story of Edward (Gael García Bernal), the filmmaker at the center of the comic book she’s drawing. He’s a successful action-movie director with no shortage of confidence and an urge to make more artistically ambitious films. But, in a cruel joke, Emma takes her pen to the root of this man’s vanity, shriveling his confidence instantly. He begins to struggle with his film about Michelle, a Brazilian model living in Toronto and trying to write a novel about a cartoonist. In a bid to escape the fashion world and immerse herself in her writing, she returns to Brazil, finding a small fishing village where the pressure to complete her novel leads her to Alice (Cláudia Ohana), a hotel owner who changes her life. Of course, the hand of Michelle’s creator, the action-movie director who wants to be a serious auteur, is never far behind.

This movie looks pretty bonkers, but in a good way. I'm definitely intrigued, and luckily we don't have to wait long to see it. The film hits theaters and VOD on September 2, 2016.

You Might Be Able to Deflect Lasers With Lightsabers in Disney Theme Parks' STAR WARS Lands

0
0

While Hollywood's pop up cantina sounds like it could be a cool way to physically experience being in a Star Wars setting, nothing will be able to hold a candle to the immersive Star Wars Lands of Disneyland and Walt Disney World. (Read some rumors about what we'll see and check out concept art here.) One way Disney could enhance that experience is by creating a live action lightsaber training game, and that's exactly what PatentYogi (via io9) claims could happen.

Apparently, the studio registered a patent for the technology that would make it seem as if visitors were deflecting laser blasts with handheld lightsabers. Check out this image:

And here's a more technical breakdown of what that means:

An entertainment environment has a user with a faux light saber that interacts with a drone flying through the air or operated with hidden rods to appear as if its flying through the air. The faux light saber has LEDs attached thereto to provide IR light to the drone. As an LED is turned on, an invisible light sensor built into the drone captures an image of the field of view with a bright spot at the position of the activated LED. A visible light source built into the drone then projects light through particulate matter toward the faux light saber. As a result, the [user] is provided with the illusion that the faux light saber has deflected a laser beam. Multiple LEDs can be activated in sequence at various times to give user the impression that the movement by the users of the faux light saber is deflecting multiple laser beams.

To be clear, this isn't an official announcement that this technology will 100% be available inside the theme parks, because Disney is constantly applying for patents and developing tech that never sees the light of day or isn't incorporated for one reason or another. But either way, it's cool that they have the technology, and we'll have to wait and see if they can figure out a way to scale that into the parks. Would it be an attraction all its own, or would they maybe hand everyone a lightsaber to play with while people were waiting in line for another ride? (OK, that last one admittedly sounds like a potential legal nightmare, but I'm sure there would be other ways they could utilize this if they wanted to.)

I downloaded the Star Wars app a few months ago just to play its lightsaber training game, and while it's simple, it's pretty fun. That seems like a good way to practice until you get the chance to check out this new technology in person...if Disney goes through with including it in the park.

THE HUNGER Is a New Movie about the Donner Party with a Walking Dead Twist

0
0

20th Century Fox has picked up the right to an upcoming novel called The Hunger. The film adaptation will be written and directed by Luke Scott, who is Ridley Scott’s son. He recently helmed the upcoming sci-fi thriller Morgan, which looks solid.

All we really know about the story for The Hunger at this point is that it will tell the tragic and bizarre tale of the Donner Party, which will be infused with a “Walking Dead-style twist. What is that twist? The report doesn’t say, but it’s safe to assume that zombies will be involved.

In case you’re not familiar with the Donner Party, it was a group of pioneers on their way to California who were trapped for several months in the Sierra Nevada in late 1846 and early 1847 due to a snow storm. To survive, many of them resorted to cannibalism. Only 48 of the 87 original members of the party survived the winter.

The novel will come from New York-based Paper Lantern Lit and Alma Katsu, who is writing the story. I’m curious to see how this story turns out. It’s always fun to see actual history mixed in with horror and other fantastical elements.

Amusing Horror-Themed Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Flavors

amusing-horror-themed-ben-jerrys-ice-cream-flavors1

We’ve seen a lot of movie inspired fan-made Ben & Jerry Ice Cream flavors and packaging created over the years. Today we’ve got a whole new series that are based on different horror movies. The series was created by John Squires and Frank Browning, and they pay tribute to films such as Gremlins, The Shining, Army of Darkness, A Nightmare on Elm Street, They Live, Friday the 13th, and Halloween

The names of the ice cream flavors are pretty clever and the packaging is amusing. Some of the names are "Klaatu Banana Nikto," "Heeeeere’s Brownie," "Camp Crystal Cake," "Human Centi-Peach," and my personal favorite is "Never Sleep Again," which is coffee flavored caffeinated ice cream. Check them all out below.

Sounds Like Kevin Bacon Would Play Freddy Krueger if He Had the Opportunity

0
0

Last year we learned that New Line Cinema was going to produce another remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. There hasn’t been any new news on that since. Who knows if it’s even still in development. If the movie production does eventually move forward, a new actor will have to be cast in the role of Freddy Krueger. How about Kevin Bacon? He seems to like the idea!

Twitter user Bettie Toxic posted the following tweet on her feed recently:

Bacon responded with:

Obviously, this isn’t official news or anything. The actor just seems like he would be up to take on the wickedly crazy role if it was made available to him.

The reason for this post is because the thought of Bacon in the role of Krueger is seriously intriguing. He’s been involved with several horror-themed films in his career such as Tremors, Stir of Echoes, Flatliners, Hallow Man, and The Darkness. I’d love to see his take on Freddy!

It's cool to see the actor go out of his way to express his interest in playing the character on Twitter. If New Line actually does move forward with a new remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, I hope they shoot Bacon an offer.

Would you want to see Bacon play Freddy?

Jude Law Plays a Legendary Demon in Fantasy-Themed Japanese Pepsi Ad

0
0

Japan is responsible for some of the most entertaining commercials ever made. I enjoy how epic and over-the-top they are. Pepsi has released an awesome series of commercials in Japan that features Jude Law playing a legendary demon!

There are five commercials total, and the story follows a mythical hero named Momotarō, a.k.a Peach Boy, who is a great warrior that was literally born out of peach. The first three commercials tell the origins of Momotarō and his talking animal accomplice. They are preparing to battle a demon named Onigashima, who is played by Law. That character is introduced the fourth episode embedded below.

This is probably one of the most epic commercials I’ve seen. The production value is incredible, and the special effects are awesome! This looks like feature film quality work. I’ve included episode four directly below, and under that you’ll find a video featuring the three previously released episodes. The fifth ad has yet to be released.

If you can’t read Japanese, Here a the gist of the story in episode four thanks to RocketNews:

Episode Four brings us close to the climax of the story, as the Peach Boy, Momotaro, arrives on the island and prepares to go head-head with the feared demon. Despite being labelled a villain in the original story, this clip fleshes out the character of the demon, with the British actor bringing a sense of humanity to its back story, which has us empathising with the beast’s sad origins.
As the clip begins, the subtitles explain that the demon once lived among the people, who hailed him as their bravest hero for his strength, until one day, someone who envied his popularity sent a fearful opponent to fight him.
In order to defeat the dangerous beast and protect the people, the man gave up his mortal life, drawing upon a bottomless reserve of power that actually frightened the people. Fearing for themselves, they locked him away in a cave on the island.
The anger and sorrow he felt after being betrayed welled up and released itself in flames from inside his body, transforming him into a frightening demon, giving birth to the name “Demon Island”.

Forest Whitaker Explains How Saw Gerrera in ROGUE ONE Is Like Darth Vader

0
0

It was exciting to learn that Saw Gerrera, a character from The Clone Wars series, was going to appear in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and that he was being played by the great Forest Whitaker. The actor recently talked with Entertainment Weekly about his character and explained how he is like Darth Vader.

"There are some similarities. I don’t know if I should tell you that."

If you watched The Clone Wars, then you know that the two fought against the Separatists together in the fifth season of the animated series. However, when Rogue One picks up they are very far from being on the same side. The report explains:

"Now they are sworn enemies across the galactic divide, although both are hardliners who aren’t timid about using brutal tactics in the fight to control the galaxy."

So they are both willing to do what needs to be done, and sometimes that means they will go to extreme measures. Whitaker goes on to share a few other traits that the characters have in common, and that involves the technological armor suit that Saw wears that keeps him alive:

"This is his armored suit for flight, but also for maintenance. He’s been through many conflicts and many wars, so it’s also about [repairing] some of the many injuries he’s had. He wears it all the time."

I imagine wearing a suit like Saw and Darth Vader has got to be rough. What if they get an itch and they aren't able to scratch it? That would be torture. No wonder Vader is so pissed off all the time! Whitaker goes on to talk about Saw's attitude towards the life that he has led, saying:

“I don’t think he’s regretful. I think he really believes that what he has done is right. He understands that the universe could be destroyed and worlds could be destroyed if he doesn’t succeed. And he’s one of the only people who will do everything to make sure the Imperial forces don’t.”

The actor then discusses his relationship with Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso and the lecture he gives her on the cost of zealotry:

"He’s really close to her, and they have a very powerful relationship. He’s talking about how you maybe make compromises that may harm people, or may harm the situation, or people may question it, but if you’re doing it for the good, there’s a positive thing about that. But what does it make you become? And how do you change as a person?"

Saw Gerrera is an interesting character, and I hope that he actually has a decent-sized role in the film and that it's not just a one or two scene kind of thing. Rogue One will be released on Decemeber 16th.

KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS Music Video - Regina Spektor’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”

Kubo and the Two Strings is one of my favorite and one of the best films of the year. I saw it a few weeks ago, and you can read my review of it here in case you missed it. When I saw it for the first time, I had no idea that Regina Spektor had done a cover of The Beatles classic “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” for it.

The film ended with this song, and as the credits started to roll my eyes just swelled up with some kind of salty watery substance. It’s such a perfect song to end the film, and it’s seriously a beautiful rendition.

I almost want to say the song is a spoiler. It was just a complete surprise for me, and it was a combination of elements that created a complete experience of bliss. As a fan of Regina Spektor and this being one of my favorite songs from The Beatles, mixed with the story that this film told, it was just a perfect storm of emotions.

Focus Features has released a music video for you to watch below. It’s nearly three minutes long, and it features a ton of new footage from the film! I should also note that this is a shorter version of the song. You can watch the music video below or wait until you see the movie so you can experience it in context with the film for the first time.

Kubo and the Two Strings comes out this weekend, and I can’t wait to see it again with my kids!

Obi-Wan Kenobi Gets a Great Fan-Made Trailer - KENOBI: A STAR WARS STORY

0

"I'll stay as long as it takes. Forever. To witness the end.”

There have been a lot of rumors surrounding Lucasfilm and Disney wanting to make a standalone Star Wars trilogy based on Obi-Wan Kenobi and his time between Star Wars Episode III and Episode IV. Those rumors included the possible return of Ewan McGregor in the role, which would be awesome! The fans would love to see these movies happen, and I hope that the executives at Lucasfilm are smart enough to eventually do it.

While we wait to see what happens, a fan by the name of Rich Williamson has edited together a great little fan trailer for a film giving us a glimpse at what Kenobi’s life might have been like after the events of Revenge of the Sith. The Jedi master is living in exile on Tatooine and is tortured by what he went through as he watches over Luke Skywalker.

Most of the footage in the trailer comes from one of McGregor’s most recent films, Last Days in the Desert, in which he played Jesus Christ during his 40 days in the wilderness. The creator of the video had this to say:

"I'd love if Star Wars started doing different genres, especially with the Star Wars Story films. One film might be a heist movie, one a horror, this one more of a meditative Western. Shake it up.”

Hell yeah.

Natalie Portman Believes She's Done Making Marvel Movies

0
0

Natalie Portman was perfectly cast in the role of Jane Foster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She starred in the first two Marvel films, but it's looking like we might not see her again. Foster will not be included in Thor: Ragnarok and with Tessa Thompson being cast as Valkyrie in the film, she could be Thor's new love interest.

Portman recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal, and she confirmed that she believes she is done playing in the MCU as Jane Foster. She says:

“As far as I know, I’m done. I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an ‘Avengers 7’ or whatever, I have no idea. But as far as I know, I’m done.”

I guess there's a chance that she could eventually come back. It will be interesting to see how they handle Foster's absence if they even decide to acknowledge it in Thor: Ragnarok. I was actually kind of hoping that somewhere down the line Portman would return to reprise her role when Jane becomes the new Thor. Who knows if that story arc will ever make it into the movies, though.

I guess if Portman doesn't want to come back, Marvel can always recast her. It's not like the studio has never done that before. Would you want to see Jane Foster make her way back into the MCU or do you think they should just leave her out at this point?

Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi, and it will hit theaters on November 3rd, 2017.
