Riz Ahmed Talks About His New ROGUE ONE Character Bodhi Rook

If you aren't watching HBO's crime series The Night Of, you're missing out on an outstanding performance by Riz Ahmed. He first popped up on my radar playing Jake Gyllenhaal's sidekick in Nightcrawler, but Ahmed is now a full-fledged star in his own right, and he's about to get a big career boost thanks to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In that film, he plays Bodhi Rook, a short-tempered hotshot pilot. We didn't know much about him, but thanks to a new interview with EW, Ahmed has revealed some more details about his character. Rook is a former shuttle pilot who flew for the Empire before eventually turning and fighting for the Rebels. But he still wears his Imperial patch on his flight jacket, and Ahmed explains why:

“I think it’s to remind you of where you’re coming from, remind you where your debts are. Do you know what I mean? For me personally, every day, looking at that, it reminds you of what you’ve done.”

Ahmed likens his character to a long distance truck driver, and explains the character's mindset at the start of the story:

“A character like Bodhi is not born into the life of a soldier. He’s a pilot working for the Empire, doing his job, getting on with it. But when you put ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, it can freak them out. It can inspire deep passions. So I’m gonna defend Bodhi...Everyone in this Star Wars movie has got quite a complex past. They have a lot of baggage and history to it. That’s part of what makes it an interesting, nuanced movie. It’s taking characters with interesting backgrounds, whether it’s warrior monks, or ex-assassins, or long-distance truck drivers, and you’re assembling this pack of misfits.”

He also explains that unlike Han Solo, who has a special relationship with his ship, Bodhi (and Rogue One in general) doesn't seem to have time for that sort of attachment:

“The feel of this film is quite rough and ready, and so is the mission and so are the characters, and so is the coming together of the characters. So the idea of people having special ships that they spit-shine and say, ‘Hey, this is my ship called the XYZ,’ that’s not of this world. This world is more about ‘Grab what you can, and let’s roll.’”

Let's hope things aren't too rough, since rumors of a somewhat troubled batch of reshoots and post-production have been plaguing the movie for months. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

Antoine Fuqua is Eyeing a SCARFACE Remake For Universal

I've never seen the 1932 version of Scarface, but when I finally saw Brian De Palma's 1983 remake starring Al Pacino, I didn't really understand why it was as hyped as it was. This was the era in which tons of people had that iconic Scarface poster up on their dorm room walls, and the movie had taken on a sort of mythic level of importance among guys of a certain age. Looking back, I'm convinced a lot of people I knew who liked the movie didn't really understand it, and were more like James Franco's Alien from Spring Breakers who buy into the gangster lifestyle and vibe presented in the movie without fully understanding the consequences. It's been more than a decade since I've seen it, so I need to go back and check it out again to see if I missed something.

Today's news may be just what I need to speed that rewatch along, because Deadline reports that director Antoine Fuqua, who has a remake of The Magnificent Seven coming out soon, is negotiating to direct a remake of Scarface for Universal. The new movie will move the story's setting from Miami to present day Los Angeles. Fuqua certainly seems like one of the most obvious choices for this, and again, since I wasn't a fan of the '83 version, I can't say I'm looking forward to this one. Do you think he's the right fit for a modern day remake? Sound off with your own thoughts in the comments below.

Tom Cruise Brawls in New Footage From JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK

Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for Tom Cruise's latest action film, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, and it features some new footage of — surprise! — Cruise kicking some ass in a fight sequence.

Side note: I just read the film's synopsis for the first time (you can read it below), and all of the marketing so far is doing a really good job of hiding the idea that this movie might be about Reacher discovering a daughter he never knew he had. The whole family element is completely gone from all of the trailers, so if that's as big a part of this movie as I think it's going to be, I wonder how many people are going to be blindsided when they finally sit down to watch it and that's the storyline they get with no hint of it in the trailers.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back hits theaters on October 21, 2016.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back follows the title character as he returns to Virginia to meet the head of his former unit. But she's missing, he's being charged with a crime committed nearly 20 years ago, and he may even have a daughter. Making things right will lead him on a cross-country chase to uncover the truth - and maybe even a family.

Review: You'll Never Look at Food The Same Way After The Pun-Filled Vulgarity of SAUSAGE PARTY

$

Sausage Party, the first R-rated CG animated movie, has been a passion project for actor Seth Rogen and his friends for the past eight years. They somehow convinced a studio to finance their twisted vision, and the resulting film may be one of the most obscene mainstream comedies ever made. But beneath the vulgar language and orgies of CG food characters having graphic on-screen sex, I was surprised to find that the film has an actual message to it. I can't think of a mainstream studio film from the past decade that discusses religion quite like this one does, and considering how everyone tends to walk on eggshells about that topic in our country right now, it's interesting to see a movie — this movie, of all movies — so willing to address it head-on.

Spoilers ahead.

The food is alive inside Shopwell's supermarket, and as the film (and the store) opens, we see a wonderful rendition of a "Be Our Guest"-esque musical number that establishes the shared beliefs of the foods: that one day they'll be taken by the gods (aka humans) to "The Great Beyond," a glorious place outside the store where all their dreams come true. A sausage named Frank (Rogen) and a hot dog bun named Brenda (Kristen Wiig) have been in packages next to each other on the shelf for a while, and they yearn to be chosen together during a Fourth of July sale so they can have sex, because that's what they think happens in the Great Beyond.

After a terrific Saving Private Ryan parody involving a cart crash and fallen items wandering dazed across the floor of an aisle, Frank and Brenda team with a nervous bagel (Edward Norton doing his best Woody Allen impression), a lavash (David Krumholtz) who talks about the 77 bottles of extra virgin olive oil he'll be given in the next life, and a female taco (Salma Hayek) who harbors feelings for Brenda. They're all on the run from Douche (Nick Kroll), an actual douche with a penchant for steroids and a thirst for revenge. The characterizations are far from subtle, and I can easily see the stereotypes — and there are dozens more I didn't mention — causing some outrage.

Frank soon encounters a bottle of Firewater (Bill Hader, doing a Native American accent) who reveals the horrible truth: the Great Beyond is just a grim hellscape in which humans eat all of the food. Firewater and a small group of friends made up the song to allow all of the food to go to their deaths smiling instead of terrified, but in the intervening years, their message has been slowly twisted (a Nazi contingent of German food recently added a lyric about "exterminating the Juice," for example). It's an obvious but effective parallel to the messages and meanings of religious texts being altered over time, and these kinds of statements are constantly (and sometimes cleverly) layered throughout the film. Eventually, there's a nice message here about how A) atheists don't have to be assholes, and B) we all need to come together despite our differences to overcome common obstacles. But if my audience's reaction was any indication, the most memorable aspect of this movie for most people will be an all-out orgy between food items that crosses pushes the boundaries about as far as they can go.

For me, one of Sausage Party's biggest problems was unexpected: I think it's lacking when it comes to big laugh out loud moments. There are some really fun food puns on display, and a bunch of little jokes and one-liners that earn a smile or a chuckle, but I was really hoping for some huge belly laughs here, and I didn't get nearly as many as I would have liked. Obviously your mileage will vary for all of this, but especially for the comedic aspects...I'm just telling you how it worked for me. I will say that I was expecting a non-stop string of sex jokes, and the movie actually has a lot more on its mind than just crossing the lines of good taste (pun intended, obvs) and subverting what we're used to seeing in CG animation from a studio film. The filthy language and gross-out humor will likely repel the people who have the mentality the movie spends most of its runtime opposing, which lends the whole thing a bit of a "preaching to the choir" vibe, but all things considered, it's a pretty solid piece of summer entertainment.

David Fincher in Talks to Direct Brad Pitt in WORLD WAR Z Sequel

After all of the issues that plagued the first World War Z film directed by Marc Forster, it actually ended out turning out really good! I enjoyed the film and it made enough money at the box office for Paramount Pictures to want to make a sequel.

Director J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) was originally attached to direct the sequel, but he recently dropped out. It looked like the project was dead, but producer and star Brad Pitt is still 100% invested in the project and he's currently trying to get David Fincher to come in and direct the sequel, which would be INCREDIBLE!

Pitt and Fincher have worked together on Seven, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. They obviously enjoy working together and if Pitt is actually able to get Fincher on board to direct World War Z 2, we can expect to see one hell of a great zombie movie!

Pitt and the studio have already had meetings with Fincher, but there's no word on if this is a project he is actually going to take on. Inside sources say that Fincher is surprisingly open to the idea, though.

If Fincher wants to do this movie, his schedule is wide open because he currently doesn't have any other film projects in the pipeline that we know of. The last film that Fincher directed was Gone Girl, which I thought was fantastic.

Fincher is one of my favorite directors and I would love to see him take the gig. It would be great to see what he would do in this genre.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Will Feature a Female Lead and an Openly Gay Character

star-trek-discovery-will-feature-a-female-captain-and-an-openly-gay-character

Some new details have come to light for the Star Trek: Discovery series being developed by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for CBS. According to Deadline, the series will feature a female lead character, who will mostly likely be non-white. The report says that they have yet to cast an actress in the role, but the majority of the women who have auditioned for the role has been African-American or Hispanic.

There's no solid information on who this lead character is but there's been a good amount of speculation that she will be the Captain. However, the report says that's "likely not the case." It will be interesting to see who this character turns out to be if it's not a Captain. The last Star Trek series to feature a female in the lead role was Star Trek: Voyager with Kate Mulgrew, as Commanding Officer Kathryn Janeway.

There is also speculation that new series will also introduce an openly gay character, which would continue the tradition of diversity and inclusiveness. I'm pretty confident that that's going to happen. In a separate report, THR says that there will also be a female admiral, a male Klingon captain, a male admiral, a male adviser and a British male doctor.

There's no other information on this stuff at the moment, but during the Star Trek 50th anniversary panel at Comic-Con, Fuller said:

“Star Trek celebrates diversity. It seems like a great statement from [Star Trek creator] Gene Roddenberry, who felt the human race just has to get along.”

More information on the series is expected to come shortly, so stay tuned for any confirmation and other details on Star Trek: Discovery. As a Star Trek fan, I'm excited to see how this series comes together.

CBS has one episode to lock me in or I'm not paying for the All-Access ridiculousness.

Michael Chernus Set to Play The Tinkerer in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Marvel and director Jon Watts have cast Michael Chernus in the role of Phineas Mason a.k.a The Tinkerer in Spider-Man: Homecoming. You might recognize Chernus from projects such as Captain Phillips, Aloha, The Bourne Legacy, and Orange Is the New Black.

michael-chernus-set-to-play-the-tinkerer-in-spider-man-homecoming11

The Tinkerer is the second of two villains that we know of in the story, and Chernus will star opposite Michael Keaton who is also a villain. Before Chernus was cast in the film, there was a chance that Keaton might actually being playing The Tinkerer because it hasn’t been officially confirmed by the studio who Keaton is playing. We just knew he was going to be a villain, but with Chernus as the Tinkerer, it almost guarantees that Keaton is playing The Vulture, which is what many of us suspected and were hoping for.

There’s still so much we don’t know about this movie, but I can’t wait to see what Watts and Marvel are going to give us. I absolutely loved the footage of the film that was screened at Comic-Con last month. It was so much more entertaining than I was expecting. It actually looks like it could be a John Hughes-directed Spider-Man movie.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to be released on July 7th, 2017. Make sure to get caught up on all of the Spider-Man: Homecoming news that we’ve reported on here. There’s a good amount of it!

David Ayer Describes SUICIDE SQUAD as an “Anarchic Punk Rock Art Movie”

david-ayer-offers-a-backstory-on-the-joker-batman-and-robins-death-in-suicide-squad

There’s a long history between Batman and The Joker, and we really don’t know what that story is yet in these DCEU films. We’ve gotten little glimpses here and there, but nothing is concrete, so the fans are left to speculate on what it all means and how all the pieces fit together.

Well, in an interview with Empire, director David Ayer filled in some of those holes regarding the history of Batman, Robin, and The Joker and confirmed that Joker killed Robin, not Harley Quinn as previously reported

"This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection. But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, 'You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.' That’s where the grill comes from."

This is a story that I would love to see on the big screen! I’m not sure why WB and Zack Snyder decided to skip all this stuff, but maybe they will go back to it in flashbacks in later films.

Ayer also talked about how there were “six or seven” different versions of Suicide Squad that he cut and none of them were rated R. He went on to describe his film as an “anarchic punk rock art movie” explaining:

"The film is really the journey of the soul. I know this is going to provoke incredible howls of outrage, but it’s really this anarchic punk rock art movie. June Moone goes into this cave where she becomes possessed by this alter-ego that’s hypersexual and primitive and destructive and vengeful. Everybody who has to take her down experiences their own sort of ‘dark night of the soul’ as Enchantress offers up this fantasy reality where she can provide them with a false nirvana, false happiness. The film, in a lot of ways, is really about the splitting of the personality and addiction, and the dark side of the soul."

I like that explanation of the film. And in case you were wondering how the first version of the film started, the director says:

"The very first script started in Belle Reve and told the backstories of everybody in these sort of flashback montages. The original conception is that there would be these memory bursts as they sat in their cells recalling their previous lives and also get the audience up to speed about who they are and how they ended up there. The first impulse was always to do a montage in the first act, but you chase different things."

I think that original concept might have played better with audiences, but then it wouldn’t have had that anarchic punk rock film that Ayer was going for. Make sure to read the whole interview here as he talks about several different aspects of the film.

James Wan’s AQUAMAN Villain Rumored to be Black Manta

james-wans-aquaman-villain-rumored-to-be-black-manta33

A couple months ago director James Wan was talking about his Aquaman film and said that there were going to be multiple villains. He didn’t say who exactly the villains would be, but he did say:

"I gotta say, one thing I love about the Aquaman world is all the really different, really interesting characters. They are interesting characters, including the villains – I’m not going to tell you which villains I’m going to play with! [laughs] But they’re super cool. They’re very larger than life, but they’re unique."

The Wrap is not reporting that they’ve learned that one of the main villains in the film will be Black Manta. This is kind of obvious because Black Manta is Aquaman’s mortal enemy. The character is a notorious pirate and assassin; Black Manta is one of the most ruthless and feared supervillains on Earth.

The interesting thing about Black Manta is that he has no superhuman powers or abilities. He has just honed several skills to near perfection. Some of these skills include strength, stamina, agility, fighting, leadership, strategy, intelligence, and even mechanical engineering. He’s created several of his on vehicles and weaponry. Oh yeah! He’s also wealthy thanks to the fortunes he’s acquired through treasure hunting over the years.

He also wears a diving suit that allows him to survive in the water for long periods of time in extreme depths. Here are some additional details on his suit:

It insulates him against the cold and protects him from pressure changes. It is completely waterproof and bulletproof, and is so completely sealed that it cannot be entered even at the atomic level. It also grants him a level of superhuman strength and durability, allowing him to survive major traumatic injuries. It greatly increases his underwater mobility, primarily through the use of some sort of diver propulsion vehicle, and allows him to leap great heights when shooting out of water. It is also effective as a means of camouflage in dark water. He wears a distinctive manta-shaped helmet with two large eyes that allow for infrared and scope vision, as well as powerful optic blasts capable of hurting or killing metahumans. His helmet connects to an oxygen system that allows him to breathe underwater indefinitely. It also protects his head from trauma.

So, Black Manta is like a villainous Batman of the sea. This is such a cool character, and it will be fun to see how Wan brings him to life in this movie. Personally, I think Black Manta is a more interesting character than Aquaman.

Aquaman swims into theaters July 27th, 2018.

TRON: LEGACY Producer Says There Have Been TRON 3 Conversations with Disney

I was really bummed out to learn that Disney killed Tron 3 last year. Everything was set and ready to go, then at the last minute before it was about to be greenlit they pulled the plug. It was a devastating blow to the fans.

The title of the sequel was going to be Tron: Ascension and director Joseph Kosinski was back on board to helm the project. Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were also both signed on to reprise their roles of Sam Flynn and Quora.

Well, producer Brigham Taylor, who recently developed The Jungle Book for Disney and the upcoming film The Rocketeers, still hopes Tron 3 will happen and says that there have been conversations with the studio about it. When asked about Tron 3 in an interview with ScreenRant, he said:

"I always hope for that. I just had a wonderful visit to Shanghai, where they have an amazing attraction based on Tron Legacy. The designers just did such an amazing job creating the feeling of stepping onto The Grid, and that indelible visual world that Lisberger created and Kosinski explored… and I think there’s a real stickiness to that that I hope can grow into a film or whatever else. So I don’t know what I’d ‘hint’ at other than that I hope for that, and that there’s obviously been conversations."

I'm a big fan of the original film, and I thought Tron: Legacy was a blast! It's great to know that there's a chance Tron 3 could still happen, but if it does, I doubt it's going to happen any time soon. I'm not going to get excited, and I'm not going to get my hopes up, though, until there is some real, actual movement.

Unnerving Red-Band Trailer for the Horror Thriller DON’T BREATHE

Don’t Breathe looks like one crazy ass horror film, and judging by the review quotes in this red-band trailer, it’s going to deliver something insane. Sony Pictures released the following caption with the trailer, “It's so fucked up…” and the trailer offers us an unsettling glimpse at what the movie entails. I will warn you, though, there is some spoiler footage shown. Sometimes I wonder why studios allow certain big story elements to be included in trailers. Who knows, though, maybe there’s more to it than what we are seeing. It just seems like a spoiler. You’ll see what I mean if you decide to watch the trailer.

The film follows a trio of reckless thieves who break “into the house of a wealthy blind man, thinking they’ll get away with the perfect heist. They’re wrong.”

Don't Breathe comes out on August 26th, and as a fan of messed up movies, I’m looking forward to seeing it. The film stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, and Stephen Lang.

Watch the Insanely Cool 1987 Cyberpunk Anime BLACK MAGIC M-66

Outside of Robotech, my first real introduction to the world of anime was a film called Black Magic M-66, which was released in 1987. I remember watching it at a friends house when I was around 13 years old, and I was completely blown away! I had never seen anything like it before. I was used to the Saturday morning cartoons and Disney stuff, but seeing an animated film like this just melted my brain. From that moment on I was always on the hunt for great anime. It obviously led me to Akira, which was actually the second badass anime film that I watched.

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Black Magic M-66, but if you’ve never seen it today is your lucky day! Just for the hell of it, I did a search online to see if I could find it, and there it was in all its glory on YouTube! I never bought it for myself because the only store selling it when I was growing up was the Suncoast Motion Picture Company store, and they had one copy they were selling for like $90, which I couldn’t afford. That store was way overpriced!

The film is a cyberpunk story that centers on a freelance reporter who discovers that two killer androids are on the loose and hunting down a little girl that they are going to kill. It kind of has a Terminator-type vibe to it. It’s a brutal animated film in which these androids cause all kinds of bloody destruction while carrying out their mission.

The movie was directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Masamune Shirow, who is also the creator of the 1985 manga.

Wicked Creepy Trailer for the Iranian Horror Film UNDER THE SHADOW

Under The Shadow screened at Sundance earlier this year, and I heard from everyone I talked to that it was a must-watch, awesome horror film. The movie was so popular that I wasn’t able to get into any screenings for it at the festival because they were all sold out. This trailer is the first footage that I’ve actually seen from the film, and I’m 100% on board! It looks great, and I love that it doesn’t really give any of the story away. It just offers viewers a great set up and a creepy-ass vibe. Here’s the brief plot summary:

As a mother and daughter struggle to cope with the terrors of the post-revolution, war torn Tehran of the 80s, a mysterious evil begins to haunt their home.

Under the Shadow is both written and directed by Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari, and it’s set to be released on October 7th. This is a movie that I don’t want to miss out on, and if you’re a movie geek, then you won’t want to miss out on it either.

Marvel is Changing CAPTAIN MARVEL's Origin Story Because It's Too Similar to GREEN LANTERN

$

One of the Marvel films I'm most excited about seeing in the coming years is Captain MarvelBrie Larson is set to star in the film as Carol Danvers, and she's going to be great. The script for the film is currently being developed by screenwriters Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve, and it looks like they'll be giving Captain Marvel a whole new origin story.

Perlman was recently a guest on the Any Time With Vin Forte podcast, and while on the show she talked about the time she spent in Marvel's Writers Program, which is where she got her start, and also discussed the Captain Marvel story she is working on. Perlman is also credited with writing the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy. which was changed drastically when James Gunn jumped on board.

Perlman revealed on the podcast that Marvel is changing Captain Marvel's origin story because it too similar to Green Lantern's story. In the comics, both characters get their powers from an alien source. In Captain Marvel, Danvers is saved by a Kree warrior named Mar-Vell after a Kree machine explodes and exposes her to Kree radiation. In the process Danvers is infused with Mar-Vell's superhuman powers. When talking about their plans for Captain Marvel, Perlman says:

"I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”

She doesn't give any details on what Captain Marvel's new origin story will be, but I'm sure Marvel and the writing team have come up with something cool. The studio tends to know what they are doing when the reinvent certain aspects of their characters and that's proven in the awesome films that they keep pumping out.

Captain Marvel isn't set to be released until March 8th, 2019, so we've got a long time before we really start finding out any kind of solid information. This change in origin story is the first big reveal of something involving the story for the film.

Review: PETE’S DRAGON is a Wonderfully Magical and Emotional Adventure

$
0
0

I was never really heavily invested in Disney’s original Pete’s Dragon movie. I’ve only seen it a couple of times and it’s one of those classics I never really connected with. One of the main reasons I was interested in seeing this remake in the first place was that it was written and directed David Lowery, who directed a great little indie drama called Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. I’ve gotta say, he did an incredible job bringing this story to life for modern audiences!

Lowery brought the characters of Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his dragon Elliot to life in amazing ways through his writing and direction. There wasn’t much talk between the characters but you could tell that their whole world revolved around each other. They didn’t need to talk to understand each other or know how they were feeling. The character development with these two characters was so strong, and you instantly fall in love with them and their relationship. Fegley was also extremly charming in the role of Pete. He did such a fantastic job playing this character.

I do have to point out that this movie is very sad. It starts out sad, there’s a lot of sadness in between, and it ends on a bittersweet note. I took my eight-year-old daughter to see the movie with me and when I asked her what she thought about it, she said she loved it, it made her cry a lot, but that it was the “best saddest movie” she’s seen. Both those statements are true: she cried a lot, and I have to agree with her on Pete’s Dragon being one of the best saddest movies.

This film is very different from the original and I actually thought it was so much better than the first one. The film had some pretty heavy coming-of-age themes that will obviously have an effect on kids. I know I’m kind of making this movie seem like a downer, but it’s also a fun feel-good movie that will have you rooting for Pete and Elliot in their adventure and search for happiness.

I won’t get into the specifics of the story because I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but through a series of events Pete and Elliot find each other and live in the woods together for six years. 10-year-old Pete is found as a Forest Ranger played by Bryce Dallas Howard is searching the woods while a team of lumberjacks from a local mill, including Wes Bentley and Karl Urban, come through cutting down trees. Pete’s discovery leads him and Elliot on an adventure of self-discovery and survival. Along the way, they make new friends who help them on their journey.

As for Elliot, I loved how they handled the character and his dragon design. I wasn’t sure if it would work when I first saw it, but the design was perfect for this film and I can’t imagine it being any different. I should also mention that the CG animation used to bring the character to life was flawless. I really enjoyed the fact that they gave the dragon the mannerisms of a dog. So anyone with a dog as a pet will be able to, in a way, connect with the character and why Pete is so attached to him. Audiences are going to love Elliot because he’s so damn lovable!

Pete’s Dragon is such a well-made film with such likable characters — you’ve got to see it. I know a lot of people aren’t interested, but you should give it a chance if you’re on the fence. You’ll be glad you did.

Pete’s Dragon opens in theaters on August 12, 2016.

Ezra Miller is now probably best known around these parts for his role as The Flash in the DC Extended Universe, but he's about to get a big boost in name recognition by appearing in this year's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. EW has our first look at his mysterious character and a ton of new information about him, starting with his name: Credence Barebone.

His character is the adopted middle child of Samantha Morton's Mary Lou Barebone, a woman who leads a radical organization called the New Salem Philanthropic Society "that wants to expose and kill wizards and witches by bringing about another Salem Witch Trials." In the first look photo above, we see Credence standing alongside Colin Farrell's Percival Graves in an alley advertising the organization's goals.

We’re told that he “appears withdrawn, extremely shy and far more vulnerable than his two sisters. Credence is defenseless against the abuse that comes in response to the slightest infraction of Mary Lou’s strict rules. But his loneliness also makes him susceptible to the manipulation of Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), who has taken a personal interest in Credence.” Graves is a powerful guy, an auror and the Director of Magical Security in the American wizarding government.

Sounds like Credence could certainly use some help, but it remains to be seen exactly how his path will cross with Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander in the film.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters on November 18, 2016.

The Duffer Brothers' Netflix series Stranger Things is one of my favorite new shows, and I'm sure you've seen enough praise for the show all over the internet by now (including here at GeekTyrant). If you haven't made time to watch all eight episodes yet, I'd highly encourage you to abandon any plans you have this weekend and dive in, because it's an excellent experience.

One of the big decisions the show made was to keep its mysterious inter-dimensional villain, The Demogorgon, hidden in the shadows for most of the first season's runtime. It's a wise decision that makes the creature more terrifying (because we fill in the horrors in our heads imaginging what it looks like and how it does what it does), but for those who are really into character design, a bunch of official concept art from the show has surfaced that gives us a really solid look at the creature from the dark and creepy Upside Down. (Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched the show...I guess?)
