Mel Gibson and Sean Penn Starring in a Movie About The Creation of The Dictionary

0
0

Well, there's a headline I never thought I'd write.

The Hollywood Reporter says Mel Gibson is set to star in The Professor and The Madman, a film about — and this is not a joke — the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary. Sean Penn is in negotiations to play a lead role opposite Gibson, while Apocalypto writer Farhad Safinia wrote the screenplay and will direct the movie, which "delves into madness, genius and two obsessive men who changed the course of literary history."

Gibson will play Professor James Murray, who in 1857 set about compiling the OED, one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. Penn will play Dr. W. C. Minor, who submitted more than 10,000 entries but was also an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane.

This has been a passion project of Gibson's for nearly twenty years. He acquired the rights to Simon Winchester's bestselling book of the same name back in 1998, and wanted to direct it himself before eventually passing those duties on to Safinia.

Years after his drunken meltdown, Gibson is poised for a comeback starring in the action movie Blood Father and directing a war movie called Hacksaw Ridge. This will be the first time he's worked with Penn, but both of them seem to have already passed their peak years as movie stars, so it'll be interesting to see if they can put butts in seats for a story that, at least on the surface, sounds like it could easily be pretty damn boring.

Benedict Cumberbatch to Play an Assassin in ROGUE MALE

Benedict Cumberbatch is making the transition into full-blown action star. THR reports that the Star Trek Into Darkness and Doctor Strange actor has signed on to star in and produce a film adaptation of Geoffrey Household's bestselling British novel Rogue Male, which "told of a hunter who attempts to assassinate a dictator but is caught, tortured and left for dead. When he escapes back home to England, he must hide out in a harsh countryside with the enemy agents as well as the police in hot pursuit."

Sounds like a role that could allow him to transform himself physically, which would be a new challenge for him. Check out the official synopsis of the book below, and let us know what you think about Cumberbatch starring in this project:

1930-something: a professional hunter is passing through an unnamed Central European country that is in the thrall of a vicious dictator. The hunter wonders whether he can penetrate undetected into the dictator’s private compound. He does. He has the potential target in his sites and is wondering whether to pull the trigger when security catches up with him. Imprisoned, tortured, doomed to a painful death, the hunter makes an extraordinary and harrowing escape, fleeing through enemy territory to the safety of his native England. But that safety is delusive: his pursuers will not be diverted from their revenge by national borders; the British government cannot protect him without seeming to endorse his deed. The hunter must flee society, and he goes literally underground, like a fox to its earth. The hunter has become the hunted.

Watch: STRANGER THINGS Reimagined as an '80s Sitcom

Because Netflix's Stranger Things debuted during the madness that was this year's San Diego Comic-Con, I haven't had time to catch up with the whole series yet. I just finished the fifth episode, and it's been awesome so far. The music, the characters, the atmosphere...it's excellent stuff, and if you haven't seen it yet and you're reading this site, there's a very good chance you'll enjoy it. (Read our season one review here.)

As with anything that achieves a certain level of pop culture popularity, the parody videos have started rolling in, and here's one from Tim Bennett that uses footage from the show to pretend it's a sitcom straight out of the '80s. It even has Randy Newman's "Strange Things" playing in the background as an extra bit of on-the-nose winking.

SWORD ART ONLINE Being Developed into Live-Action TV Series

Sword Art Online has been adapted from manga to anime to video game. Now, it's becoming a live-action TV series. THR reports Skydance Television has announced its plans to turn the game into a live-action series that will be coupled with an immersive VR experience. Skydance issued a statement accompanying the announcement:

“At Skydance we are in the business of world-building and SAO is a massive pop-culture phenomenon from which we plan to launch a full-scale and wide-ranging set of live-action franchise extensions across our business verticals, beginning with television...We look forward to working alongside Laeta [Kalogridis], Reki Kawahara and the teams at Kadowawa and Aniplex to build out a deeply immersive new universe of SAO in an authentic way that honors its well-established fan base around the globe.”

I'm more than a little skeptical about adapting a series that takes place 90% inside a video game to a television series. CGI and television are not a great combination, and an over-reliance on digital effects can make even high budget shows look cheaply made. I know many are going to point to Game of Thrones and say "well, that's not true," but this show is not going to have a GOT budget. It's going to look more like this:

That aired on American network television in prime time and got the response you would imagine.

I think if you want to do this correctly, you use practical effects and traditional animatronic stuff for monsters...or maybe try to find a way to write around the monster element. I guess if you expect it to look cheap, you can't be disappointed. I just don't know if the technology is there yet to make this look good on television. What's your take?

Teaser Trailer For Netflix's Christopher Guest Mockumentary MASCOTS

0
0

Full disclosure: this teaser trailer is not all that special. The information behind it, however, is! Director Christopher Guest is back with a mockumentary that hopefully will reach the iconic levels that Best In Show and This Is Spinal Tap achieved.

Mascots will be a film that analyzes the highly competitive world of sports mascots and their quest for the most sought-after award in their field. The teaser trailer is just kind of goofy, but I don't even care because I'm really excited for another Christopher Guest project! The film debuts on Netflix on October 13th!

Marvel Reveals Photo of Yondu's "Prototype" in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

Marvel has uploaded a picture of Yondu's "Prototype" he uses in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2. In the footage we saw of the film in Hall H, this is the item Baby Groot has to find for Yondu in order for he and Rocket to escape their cell.

In color, the mechanical mohawk is ruby red and gives Yondu greater control and speed over his golden arrow. We saw the killability of this object in full swing as Yondu uses it to execute nearly an entire ship of bounty hunters one by one! From other footage we saw, it looks like he doesn't wear it the whole film, but I love the addition to his costume!

Words cannot describe how badly I want you guys to see this footage of the film. It remains my highlight of SDCC and I know you'll be just as hyped as me when you see it! Take a look at the "prototype" below.

PREACHER's Dominic Cooper Kicks Ass in First STRATTON Trailer

0
0

Here's the first trailer for Stratton, an action thriller directed by Con Air's Simon West that was originally going to star Henry Cavill, but now stars Preacher lead and former Howard Stark Dominic Cooper.

My feelings about this movie can be summed up by what happens at the 00:30 mark, when the villain is described as "the most dangerous man I've ever known" and it cuts to the bad guy punching someone multiple times in the chin...except if you really watch, you'll see that he's clearly not making contact and the guy he's punching is just hurling his head back as if he's gotten hit. I'm obviously not saying that he should have REALLY punched the guy in the face, but for this level of "movie mistake" to make it into a trailer — especially the first trailer, our big introduction to this world that's supposed to make us want to really see the movie — seems like a bad sign. If I picked up on it the first time I watched it, the editors (who probably watched this footage hundreds of times) had to notice. Did they just not have any other usable footage? Like I said...not exactly a great indicator about the movie's quality.

But hey, we'll see what happens when the real film comes out. Maybe that shot isn't even in the film's final cut. The only problem is Stratton doesn't have an official U.S. release date yet, so we'll keep you posted on that.

Stratton, a Special Boat Service operative for MI6, and his American counterpart Marty, scope a laboratory complex in Iran in order to intercept deadly biochemical weapons. This most complex of missions goes spectacularly wrong however and in the mayhem Marty is mortally wounded. Stratton knows his trusted friend isn’t going to make it.
Back at base Stratton is summoned by the big boss at MI6. She has received intel that a former Soviet operative – Barovski – has gone rogue. Thought to be dead for the last 20 years, he plans to use deadly chemical weapons stolen from his former paymasters to take revenge. Hot on Barovski’s tail, Stratton and his team are despatched to Rome, including Hank, a US Navy Seal and loyal student of Marty’s from back in the day. Pumped up with hatred for the man who killed his friend, Hank goes all out, blowing the team’s cover and allowing Barovski an opportunity to escape.
On their return to London, Stratton and Hank track down the creator of the bio weapons and force him to reveal all he knows. Once again, however, they find their mission has been compromised; they seem to be taking one step back for every two steps forward.
Stratton and his team are not ones to give up easily however; their training simply does not allow that. In this race against time we discover that Barovski may have a weapon, but so do we…Stratton.

Cool Stop-Motion Animation Compares Box Office Success of DC and Marvel

Many people today like to declare Marvel Studios the all-time leader in cinema, but if it wasn't for other production companies, they wouldn't be in the position they are today. After a string of failed releases, Marvel was bankrupt and forced to sell the rights to a bulk of their prized characters in exchange for 5% of the profits on the franchises. This sparked a string of releases that would allow Marvel to start making movies again!

Pretty cool fact, right? Learn about that and more in Wired's stop-motion financial comparison of the DC and Marvel films!

Willem Dafoe Providing Voice of Shinigami Ryuk in DEATH NOTE

0
0

Adam Wingard's (You're Next, The Guest, Blair Witch) feature film adaptation of Death Note has found its Ryuk. Mashable reports that Willem Dafoe has signed on to voice the character of Ryuk, a Shinigami ("death god") that drops the Death Note book into the human world because he's bored and wants to see what happens when a human utilizes its power.

For those that don't know, the story follows a high school student named Light Yagami, who finds a book called the Death Note which has the power to kill anyone whose name is written within it. Here's a more detailed description:

Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal...or his life? Light tests the boundaries of the Death Note powers as L and the police begin to close in. Luckily Light's father is the head of the Japanese National Police Agency and leaves vital information about the case lying around the house. With access to his father's files, Light can keep one step ahead of the authorities. But who is the strange man following him, and how can Light guard against enemies whose names he doesn't know?

Dafoe sounds like an excellent choice for this chaos-causing character, and he joins Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley, Keith Stanfield, Paul Nakauchi, and Shea Whigham in the film. We already know the movie will be rated R, and it'll be interesting to see what Wingard does with this story, since it sounds like a more FX-heavy project than anything he's done in the past. Production is currently underway, and we'll keep you updated when we hear more.

Watch: Honest Trailer For Zack Snyder's WATCHMEN

0
0

Just yesterday, Mick wrote about a video essay that dives into the impossibility of adapting Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen into a film. But despite its impossibility, Zack Snyder went for it anyway. Though the result was divisive, it's worth noting that it's been seven and a half years since the film came out and we're still talking about it. That's gotta count for something, right? I liked Watchmen, though part of me still wishes they could have gone full crazy and included the squid at the end.

Check out ScreenJunkies' newest Honest Trailer and let us know what you think in the comments.

How Long Does Bruce Campbell Want to Continue in His Role as Ash?

0
0

While speaking to a roundtable of reporters at San Diego Comic-Con for the Starz series Ash Vs. Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell discussed his commitment to playing the role of Ash Williams from The Evil Dead franchise. Here is what he had to say:

"I'm happy to take Ash to the end now. I'll do it. You know, every actor goes through the denial phase of 'Look, I've done a lot of other projects and blah-blah-blah.' You want Ash? I'm gonna choke you on him. You'll get more Ash than you've ever wanted in your life."

Fantastic! During the interview, the possibility of a third season was brought up and this is what he had to say about it:

"We've been talking a lot about it. Cause see, we gotta plan ahead. The writers room will be back up in September. So yeah, we're talking about it already. We want Seasons 3 and 4 from Starz."

The “WE” that he is referring to is Executive Producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert as well as himself. The prospect of future gore-filled awesomeness makes me happy on the inside. I hope that they can get a third and fourth season of the show. What do you think? Is it worth it?

Thanks to Cinemablend for the heads up on this interview.

Kids Survive the Apocalypse in Crazy Fun Music Video - BETTER LIFE

I’ve got an awesomely produced music video for you to watch today called "Better Life" from a band named Kids of the Apocalypse. The video is set in an apocalyptic world and it focuses on a group of kids who are surviving in this crazy world.

We found them in a lost supermarket. We don't know their names, we don't know where they are from, they have weird skills and powers, maybe they are survivors, or have been chosen to make a better world.

It’s an extremely fun short full of incredibly cool visuals, and I love the tone and style. It's mostly live action, but they are some cool animated elements as well. Oh yeah! The band also has a freakin’ rad website that you should check out that will immediately take you back to the internet of the '90s.

Ghost Rider Teased in Synopsis for AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4

Marvel and ABC have released an official synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season four, and it teases the introduction of Ghost Rider. He’s apparently going to roar into the lives of Agent Coulson and his team.

The synopsis also brings fans up to speed on all of the other characters and where they find themselves as season four begins. One of the biggest reveals is that S.H.I.E.L.D. is once again a legitimate organization, and they are now operating within the law. There’s also new director taking over the reigns of S.H.I.E.L.D.. All of the details about that are explained in the synopsis below:

In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they’ve ever faced – an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward. The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman, Lincoln Campbell.
In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director (Jason O’Mara) to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack (Henry Simmons), and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. They have been trying to track down and capture Daisy (Chloe Bennet), aka Quake, who has gone rogue in an attempt to atone for sins from the past. But with the world believing that Daisy is a dangerous outlaw who has taken down banks and bridges, the new Director has no qualms about taking her down for good. Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) have taken a big step forward in their relationship. But with Simmons’ new promotion as Special Advisor to the Director in Science and Technology, Fitz, as well as her former team members, finds it hard to confide in or trust her since she’s now the Director’s confidant.
Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna) will roar into the lives of Agent Coulson and the team as a junkyard mechanic who can turn on a dime into the terrifying Ghost Rider. Will Robbie be a friend or foe to S.H.I.E.L.D. – as well as the world, itself? Meanwhile, Fitz discovers that socially awkward genius and friend Dr. Radcliffe (John Hannah) has started putting the finishing touches on a new, secret invention.

I’ll be playing catch up on the series over the next month because I skipped all of last season. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC this September.

STRANGER THINGS Gets a Flip Book Animated E.T. Mashup

First of all, if you haven’t watched Strange Things on Netflix yet, what is wrong with you?! Get on that because it will bring more awesomeness into your life, especially if you were lucky enough to spend some time growing up in the '80s. It’s just an explosion of nostalgia, and today we have an incredibly cool fan made flip book animated mashup with Steven Spielberg’s E.T. It comes from artist Ben Zurawski, and it’s absolute perfection. The creator says that he “fell madly in love with the Netflix show Stranger Things and binge watched all 8 episodes last week.” This is his tribute.

FANTASTIC BEASTS Sequel Officially Announced and David Yates Is Returning to Direct

0
0

Warner Bros. has officially announced that they are moving forward with a sequel to the Harry Potter spinoff film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. J.K. Rowling is writing the script and director David Yates is returning to helm the film. The studio even set a release date of November 16th, 2018!

Even though Fantastic Beasts hasn't even been released yet, I'm sure fans of the Harry Potter franchise will be excited to hear the news. I am! The studio even offered us a brief plot summary teasing the story for the sequel. It reads:

The second Fantastic Beasts movie moves deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances.

We already knew there would be a series of these Fantastic Beasts films, and Yates previously talked about the script that Rowling was writing for the sequel:

“We’ve seen the script for Part 2, for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new direction – as you should, you don’t want to repeat yourself. The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further. It’s a very interesting development from where we start out. The work is pouring out of her.”

The sequel sounds quite intriguing. It's kind of hard to comment on what might happen in it since I haven't even seen the first movie yet, but it's exciting to have confirmation that the story will continue.

Oh, yeah! A third Fantastic Beasts movie is also set for release on November 20th, 2020.
