Swamp Thing Animation Test for Joseph Kahn’s DARK UNIVERSE Film Pitch

$

Director Joseph Khan released an eight-second animation screen test of the DC character Swamp Thing for a pitch he was making to Warner Bros. for a Dark Universe movie, a.k.a. Justice League Dark. In regards to the test, Khan says:

"I pitched on Dark Universe before it became an animated movie. Here's an 8 second test of Swamp Thing I designed."

It looks like he may have tried to jump onto the film project after Guillermo del Toro jumped ship. Del Toro was working on it since 2013 but was unable to get it off the ground. The studio then opted to do it as an animated film, which is cool, but not as cool as a live-action film from Del Toro. That could have been awesome, and it’s a missed opportunity.

As for Khan’s vision, I have no idea what he would have done. The animation test of Swamp Thing is cool, but this is also the guy who directed the terrible film Torque. He’s also the guy who made that Unauthorized Power/Rangers short film, which was cool. I just don’t think Khan has what it takes to make a film like Justice League Dark. Check out the animation test and tell us what you think.

Jared Leto Wants Batman and Joker to Face Off in Ben Affleck's BATMAN Film

Jared Leto enjoyed playing the Joker in Suicide Squad so much that he wants to keep playing him in future DC films. During an interview with the Toronto Sun, the actor expressed his hope for the character saying:

“I hope it’s an introduction (of the Joker) … and not the end! Because I could easily just play the Joker a couple more times and then retire. Because it’s so fulfilling and so creative and it’s so imaginative. It’s really difficult to think about doing anything else!”

One of the DC films he really would like to be a part of is the Batman solo film currently being developed by Ben Affleck. That's the exact movie that I'd hope to see the Joker in next. It would be a shame if he weren't. Leto goes on to say:

“I think it would be incredible to see Batman and the Joker go head-to-head! This Batman and this Joker. I mean, I don’t know, that might be too much! But that would be fun.”

We've previously heard rumors that the Batman film will be set in Arkham Asylum and that the movie will be packed with villains. If that's really the case, then the Joker would have to be among them, and possibly be the one who leads the revolt against Batman.

I any case, I doubt that Suicide Squad will be the last time we see Leto's Joker in one of these DC films. I'd say it's a safe bet that he'll pop up the next Batman movie, but we'll just have to wait and see.

If you're a fan of Ash Vs. Evil Dead, get ready because season two is going to going to feature the “worst death in the history of all visual arts,” and you’ll be happy to know that it involves Ash’s classic 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88, which is owned by director Sam Raimi. You can see a new photo of that car above.

During a recent interview with EW, Bruce Campbell says the creative team behind Ash Vs. Evil Dead have really outdone themselves with one particular death. He explains:

“There’s an episode that’s basically around the Delta. It’s a pretty interesting episode, with perhaps the worst onscreen death in the history of all visual arts. ‘Worst’ meaning ‘most outrageous.’ Like, ‘Am I really watching this happening? Am I really watching this unfold in front of me?’”

It’s awesome to know that the filmmakers aren’t shying away from pushing the boundaries! One thing that Evil Dead has always done is push the boundaries of horror, and now it has all led to this insanity that Campbell is teasing us with. The actor goes on to reveal that his evil doppelgänger will be back to torment him

“Well, he seems to pop up, that Evil Ash, he’s a tricky one. Ash always has internal struggles, let’s just say that.”

We previously learned that Ash Vs. Evil Dead will also include elements from Army of Darkness, so we have that to look forward to seeing as well. Ash vs Evil Dead is set to return to Starz in October.

HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN Director Jason Eisner Set to Direct NEW YORK CITY OUTLAWS

Jason Eisner is one hell of a talented director who has made some of the most wonderfully demented films you will ever see. He started out making short films like ''Treevenge," and his first feature-length film was Hobo With A Shotgun. The filmmaker has found his next film project, and it’s perfect for him and his crazy style.

The film will be an adaptation of the comic book New York City Outlaws, which comes from Robert Huszar and Ken Landgraf. The story centers on “a group of vigilantes who join forces to rescue NYC from total anarchy during a prolonged police strike.”

There are only five issues of the comic book, which was published in 1984, and if you’re familiar with it, then you can tell it was inspired by The Warriors. The script for the film is being written by Bryan Connolly and Zack Carlson.

I can’t wait to see what Eisner does with this film. There’s no doubt that he’s going to deliver something utterly insane and complexly awesome. I’ve enjoyed everything that Eisner has developed. The guy just has a wonderfully twisted sense of humor and a wicked fun style.

Eisener is currently working on the Death Note adaptation as second unit director, with director Adam Wingard (You’re Next, Blair Witch).

If you're a fan of Netflix's incredible new series Stranger Things, I've got a few things here that you've got to check out today! The first is a video released by CoSA VFX that features a breakdown reel of some of the fantastic visual effects that they created for the series. Below that you'll find several alternate character designs for the Upside-Down monster. They come from concept artist Nuttavut Baiphowongse, and although I loved the monster design used in the series, some of these alternate designs are pretty damn cool.

A ton of work and talent went into bringing this true series masterpiece to life for us. It always fun for me to see some of the development work that goes into the creation of these kinds of movies and TV shows that I enjoy so much.

3D Is a Required Tool to Tell DOCTOR STRANGE’s Dimensional Story

$
0
0

For the most part, I think 3D is just a gimmick to get audiences to pay more money to see a movie. However, sometimes a movie comes along that actually requires 3D to help tell a story. One of the most recent movies that fell into this category was Robert ZemeckisThe Walk. The 3D used in that was 100% a tool to move the story forward and help engulf the audience in the story that was being told.

3D can be a powerful tool when used correctly, but not many filmmakers do. Most studios just want the 3D conversion done for the extra cash. According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, director Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange will be using 3D to help tell their “dimensional story.” If you saw the Comic-Con trailer for the film, you can see how insane the effects are and how using 3D will actually make it more of a wild ride for fans.

I think the 3D used in pretty much every Marvel film up until this point has been pointless. Feige talked to Collider about using 3D in the film, saying:

“Some people look at 3D like a tool, like Atmos or IMAX, it’s a storytelling tool. And sometimes it can feel like ‘Oh, that tool was simply put on that movie so they could charge $8 more. And I think that’s where you get reactions like ‘Oh, c’mon.” There are other movies like Guardians [of the Galaxy] and Doctor Strange, that will be utterly enhanced in 3D. There are sequences of the film that 3D is actually necessary to tell the dimensional story that is happening, through visuals. And we’re now finding ourselves in VFX reviews going, ‘Okay we know this is perfect for 3D, this is built for 3D, but the stories gotta work in 2D so how do we adjust it so it still works in 2D?’ But the 3D is going to be amazing.”

I have yet to see anything from Doctor Strange in 3D, but I can’t wait to see what that experience is like! Feige goes on to say that in the coming weeks there will be a 3D version of that Comic-Con trailer screening in theaters.

It'd be nice if more filmmakers would just use 3D as a storytelling tool, and if the film doesn’t need it, then not use it. At this point, the filmmakers aren’t really even involved with the 3D conversion process, though. Most of the time it’s just something a studio does because it's now a part of the assembly line of making tentpole films, and that kinda sucks.

I’m excited for Doctor Strange, and I’m excited to see how the 3D enhances the story and gives the audience more of a surreal experience. The movie hits theaters on November 4th.

Kiefer Sutherland Says New FLATLINERS Movie Is Actually a Sequel

A few weeks ago we learned that Kiefer Sutherland had joined the new Flatliners movie that’s currently in development. Since the initial announcement of the movie, it was said to be a remake, but according to Sutherland, the movie is actually a sequel, which makes this new movie a bit more appealing to me as a fan of the original. During an interview with Metro UK, the actor talked about the character he plays and explained that it’s the same character he played in the original film:

“I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film. I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes.”

I’m glad that he won’t just be playing some random professor. It’s cool that he has come back to reprise his original role. I do think a sequel focusing on the original characters would still have been much more interesting. I would have loved to see Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin, and Oliver Platt reprise their roles all these years later and see a new story following their characters and where they ended up after the experiences they went through.

The new movie stars Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemens as five medical students who decide to trigger near-death experiences by purposely stopping their hearts and then restarting them after a certain amount of time. As they delve deeper into their experiments, things become more and more dangerous and nightmarish as they are forced to confront the sins of their pasts and deal with the paranormal consequences of crossing a line to the other side.

What do you all think about the new Flatliners movie being more of a sequel than a remake?

HBO's WESTWORLD - Should Filmmakers Have to Defend Their Controversial Story Elements?

$
0
0

People seem to be easily offended these days, and I think it's crazy when there are people who complain over the content of certain films, TV shows, and other forms of art. People have the right to choose what they want to watch and what they don’t want to watch. Filmmakers and artists have the right and freedom to do what they want to tell their stories in whatever medium they are working in. They shouldn’t have to defend the creative choices they make from people who have differing opinions because those people aren’t going to watch it anyway. If they do watch the things they don’t like, then the only reason for that is that so they can bash the artists for what they’ve made.

The only reason that I bring this up now is because the team behind the upcoming HBO series Westworld felt compelled to come out to defend their use of rape and violence against women in the series. The first couple episodes of the series were recently screened for some press who were rattled by what they saw.

I haven’t seen the series yet, but according to THR, “The opening scene features a lifelike female android (played by Evan Rachel Wood) being dragged off-screen (by her hair) to be raped off-screen by a villain of sorts called the Man in Black (portrayed by Ed Harris).”

Yeah, I’m sure this will make some people cringe and feel uncomfortable, but it serves the story that they have set out to tell. In case you’re wondering how that scene can serve a purpose in the story, it's what's known as an Inciting Incident. In this case, it's an act of violence to make the audience want to root for the robots when they begin their uprising against the humans. It’s crazy to me that some people just don’t understand the basic structures of telling a good story and making the audience feel certain emotions for the characters that fill it.

In defense of the choices that the creative team made in Westworld, showrunner Lisa Joy explains:

"It was definitely something that was heavily discussed and considered as we worked on those scenes. Westworld is an examination of human nature. The best parts of human nature — paternal love, romantic love, finding oneself — but also the basis for parts of human nature —violence and sexual violence. Violence and sexual violence have been a fact of human history since the beginning. There's something about us — thankfully not the majority of us — but there are people who have engaged in violence and who are victims of violence.
"When we were tackling a project about a park with premise where you can come there and do whatever desire you want with impunity and without consequence, it seemed like an issue we had to address. In addressing it, there's a lot of thinking that goes into it. Sexual violence is an issue we take seriously; it's extraordinarily disturbing and horrifying. And in its portrayal, we endeavored for it to not be about the fetishization of those acts. It's about exploring the crime, establishing the crime and the torment of the characters within this story and exploring their stories hopefully with dignity and depth and that's what what we endeavored to do.
"The point in Westworld is they’re robots. How you treat a robot with human-like qualities? Is that reflective of how you would treat a human? It's a little bit different than Game of Thrones, where it is human-on-human violence. But to your larger point: Is it something we think about? Yeah, I think the criticism is valid. I think it’s something that people take into account. It’s not something we’re wanting to highlight or trying to highlight, but I think the criticism is point taken on it."

Critics and most audiences should understand this stuff! As I said before, it’s a basic aspect of storytelling. If it serves a purpose to the story then no one should be crying about it, and the creative team shouldn’t have to be defending the choices they made to tell their story.

Instead of bashing the filmmakers for being bold, maybe people should try to understand the reasoning behind it. You aren’t condoning the act of rape and violence by accepting it as part of the story because the full story in itself is against those things, why do you think the robots rise up and fight back!?

I just don't think that filmmakers and artists should be made to feel guilty over their creative decisions. They shouldn’t have to bend to the will of political correctness when making films and TV shows because people complain. This is their story, and if you don’t like the story they are telling then you don’t have to watch it.

I just want the talented filmmakers out there who are creating the great movies and TV shows that we watch to have the freedom to do what’s best for their stories without being criticized for their choices to include difficult and controversial elements. Do the people who don’t like seeing certain things in films and TV show just want to pretend that these kinds of things don’t happen in real life?

Now, here I am defending the filmmakers and artists for their work. I just feel that when filmmakers set out to create art and tell a story, they shouldn't feel constricted in how they tell it. So that’s my rant for the day! Feel free to agree or disagree with my point of view in the comments below.

Westworld comes from Jonathan Nolan and J.J. Abrams, and it's based on the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name. The series is set to premiere on HBO on October 2nd.

Here's Jeremy Renner's Incredibly Unsubtle Hint That He Wanted Hawkeye to Die in THE AVENGERS

$

It's no secret that Jeremy Renner wasn't thrilled with Joss Whedon's approach to the character of Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye) in 2012's The Avengers. He's spoken openly about how he didn't like the fact that he was basically turned into a mind-controlled villain for most of the movie, but today I learned that he was so miserable during that film's production, he might have taken things a little too far:

“I never really told anybody this,” the actor said during a Q and A at London Film and Comic-con, “but in the first Avengers… I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go round like a zombie, I’m like Loki’s minion. And I’m still not even sure who Hawkeye was at that point. So I’m a little frustrated, because I was so excited to figure out who Hawkeye was. [So] I just had a heart attack in every scene – I’d just be walking with… Scarlett Johansson, and just like be ugh,” Renner said, clutching his chest theatrically.
"And they said, ‘what are you doing man?’ I’m giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.”

It seems like he's telling the truth here (through probably slightly exaggerated for the Comic-Con crowd), and if that's the case, that seems like a very childish way to act out against a script decision you don't agree with. I don't really like to use the whole "You're getting paid so much money, just shut up and do what you're asked to do!" argument, but in this case, faking your character's death multiple times while the film is shooting seems like a little much.

It's probably not as serious as he's making it out to be, and it sounds as if his arc in Age of Ultron gave him a better opinion of the character:

“I don’t really want him to die now,” Renner told the crowd. “I really got to explore him a lot, and I can’t wait to explore him more, and there’s some really cool ideas coming up."

Maybe one of those "really cool ideas" is that Netflix series for Hawkeye. We'll find out soon enough.

Adam Savage Also Went Undercover as Kylo Ren at Comic-Con 2016

We already wrote about former Mythbuster Adam Savage dressing up as the bear from The Revenant and wandering around San Diego Comic-Con 2016, but instead of being content with just one secret cosplay experience this year, Savage kicked it up a notch and donned an entirely separate costume before he took to the convention center floor. This is a much more traditional costume than the bear, and it seems like he had a blast interacting with people on the show floor. Take a look, and if you were there, check the background of your photos because maybe you saw him and didn't even know it!

Dave Bautista Says Drax is Still "Confused" in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

Dave Bautista may never fully make the transition from former professional wrestler to full time actor, but no one can take away how he has embodied the role of Drax the Destroyer. The actor will return as the oblivious behemoth in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and according to his interview with IGN, not much has changed:

"You know it's weird, because Drax, I like to say he’s confused. He’s developed strong relationships with these people, they are now his friends and his family, but he’s still the same guy. He still takes everything very literally, but now he’s surrounded by people who use metaphors constantly. So he either doesn’t know what they’re talking about, or he’s pretending to know what they’re talking about, but he really doesn’t. So he’s just confused."

In the SDCC footage (which still has yet to be released), we witnessed that in addition to all that, Drax still lacks a filter. Confused by the presence of Kurt Russell's character Ego and what he is, Drax boldly questions whether or not Ego has a human penis, and is satisfied with the response.

Maybe it's the wrestling fan in me, but I'm excited for Batista to once again appear in a successful franchise. I think it shows he can thrive under the right role and not just appearances where he has one line the entire movie *COUGH* Skyfall.

The first poster has been revealed for Transformers: The Last Knight...and it looks pretty badass!

Don't take that as my endorsement that this film is going to rock your socks off, but if nothing else, it looks like it has the potential to be visually impressive! We know next to nothing about the story this time around...but is that really the point of these films this far along in the franchise? You're there to see giant and impressive-looking robots, and that Hydra in the upper right hand corner delivers!

The film will hit theaters on June 23, 2017.

New PETE'S DRAGON Trailer: "There's Magic in The Woods"

Disney UK has released a new trailer for Pete's Dragon, director David Lowery's new take on the classic 1977 movie that tells the story of a boy and his dragon for a whole new generation. I had a chance to see some early footage from the film and learn a lot about it, and you can read that write-up here if you're interested in hearing about how the film differs from the original. But what it all boils down to is that this version looks solid and capable of standing on its own. We'll find out if that's truly the case when the movie hits theaters on August 12, 2016.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Video Discusses The Impossibility of Adapting WATCHMEN

$

I'm faced with an impossible decision in this latest kaptainkristian video. While I would love to add to my argument that Zack Snyder only makes characters the way he imagines them, I would then have to say that Alan Moore was right and Watchmen was "unfilmable." I do not believe a good version of Watchmen cannot be made, but I do believe it cannot be done in a film.

If someone were to redo this in the form of a TV series, I think you'd have a much greater success in translating Alan Moore's work to animation (and this might actually happen). I think Snyder focused too much on the edge (which is what he does best) and not enough on the nuances that made this series great. I'm sure you'll agree as well when you watch this video.

Disney Developing a Gender-Swapped Remake of SPLASH Starring Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell

The 1984 film Splash launched Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah to international fame, and with remake fever on the brain over at the Mouse House, Deadline reports that Disney is currently developing a new remake with an interesting take: instead of a man falling for a mermaid, a woman will fall for a merman.

Comedian Jillian Bell (The Night Before, Workaholics) reportedly came up with the pitch, and the plan is for her to star opposite her 22 Jump Street co-star Channing Tatum. Tatum as a merman sounds super bizarre, but at least it's a fascinating take. They've hired Marja-Lewis Ryan (who worked with Bell on an upcoming project called Liked) to write the screenplay, and original director Ron Howard will produce alongside his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer.

I haven't seen Splash since I was a kid, but I know there are super fans of it out there who surely have some strong feelings about this news one way or another. Sound off in the comments and let us know what you think, and take a look at the original trailer for a refresher if it's been a while since you've seen it, too:
