marvel-releases-spellbinding-doctor-strange-comic-con-poster-art1

In preparation for their big presentation at Comic-Con next week, Marvel has released their Doctor Strange Comic-Con poster art. The poster is a piece of concept art that was created for the film by artist Ryan Meinerding, and it will be distributed to fans who are attending the event. It's a tradition for Marvel to take concept art like this and turn it into a poster for Comic-Con. Actor Benedict Cumberbatch talked about his the differences between Doctor Strange and Sherlock Holmes in an interview with EW:

“The two men are intelligent,” says Cumberbatch. And? “Finito,” the actor says. “That’s it. Stephen Strange is a lover, he’s a materialist, he’s arrogant, but he’s got a great sense of humor. There are smatterings of the same colors that Sherlock has, but he’s not on the spectrum.”

I'm looking forward to actually seeing the Sorcerer Supreme wield some wicked cool magic like in the image above. There's no doubt that fans are going to be treated to some insane awesomeness at the Marvel panel at Comic-Con, and we will be there on the front line to cover it all for you. I can't wait to see what they are going to show off!

Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4th.

More New Photos From THE DARK TOWER and How the Film Connects to THE SHINING

Yesterday we got a bunch of new information on the upcoming big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower. This included both Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughy talking about the film and their roles as The Gunslinger and The Man in Black, respectively. Now today we've got a bunch of new photos for you to check out! I hope this is all leading up to a trailer reveal soon! The new photos focus on Roland (Elba) and Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) on their adventure through Mid-World.

I also wanted to point out something that I noticed in one of the EW articles talking about the young character Jake. He is pulled out of the modern world and into Roland's post-apocalyptic wasteland. The character plays a very important part of the story in the first few books, and EW mentions that the film will add an interesting trait to the character. Jake is said to have a special ability called "The Shine," which would, in a way, connect the film to The Shining. As you all know, Danny Torrance also had "The Shine." I just thought I would point that out because I thought that was pretty cool.

The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum.  It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.

The movie is set to be released on February 17th, 2017, and we'll learn more about the film at Comic-Con next week. Thanks to EW for the photos.

Awesome STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Behind-The-Scenes Video Reel and Teaser Poster

"May the force be with us."

With Star Wars Celebration currently underway, Lucasfilm has released an incredibly cool, must-watch behind-the-scenes video reel for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as a great new teaser poster that features the Death Star looming over a tropical battle between the Rebels and the Empire.

The video that was made has the exact same powerful nostalgic effect as the behind-the-scenes video that was released at Comic-Con last year for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

This new video is really quite beautiful and if you're a fan of Star Wars, this is sure to get you buzzing with excitement as it features some awesome footage of the film’s set and the ambitious scale of director Gareth Edward's production. It also features the cast and crew talking about their experiences making the film.

I just melted into bliss as I watched this and yes...I got a little emotional and goosebumps of excitement as I watched it. I can't wait to see that new trailer that should be released later today! This looks like it would have been a hell of a fun film to be a part of! Rogue One tells the story of a group of unlikely heroes who unite to steal the plans to the Death Star and it will be released on December 26th.

New KONG: SKULL ISLAND Photo Shows The Island Takes Its Name Literally

After seeing him handle a fun coming-of-age indie film like The Kings of Summer, I'm really looking forward to Jordan Vogt-Roberts' upcoming blockbuster Kong: Skull Island. It has a terrific cast led by Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, a cool premise, and a gorgeous and dangerous setting — one that apparently takes its name very literally. EW has released a new photo from the film (above), and you can see the massive bones of some sort of creature in the background as a handful of the human characters move through the remnants.

Vogt-Roberts recently said the film would contain the largest King Kong we've ever seen, and he elaborated on that in a new interview:

“From the size of the skull, you can tell that things on this island are much bigger than audiences are used to with traditional Kong lore. Our Kong is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen, and that translates to a lot of different things on the island."

The director explains that the film takes place in the ’70s, "a time where it was believable that we could still be confronted with myth. And there was still unknown in the world.” The story involves NASA launching a satellite tasked with mapping the world, and this mysterious island appears, so a team is sent in to explore it.

“The thing that most interested me was, how big do you need to make [Kong], so that when someone lands on this island and doesn’t believe in the idea of myth, the idea of wonder – when we live in a world of social and civil unrest, and everything is crumbling around us, and technology and facts are taking over – how big does this creature need to be, so that when you stand on the ground and you look up at it, the only thing that can go through your mind is: ‘That’s a god.’”

The cast will be at San Diego Comic-Con next week, so expect a trailer or at least a sneak peek at some footage from the movie then.

FANTASTIC BEASTS Director David Yates Says The Sequel "Takes The Story in a Whole New Direction"

0

It sounds like David Yates is going all-in on the Harry Potter cinematic universe. The director helmed the last four films in the traditional Potter series, he directs this year's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and now it seems that he's going to direct the sequel to that movie as well, which J.K. Rowling has already written. In a new interview with EW (that also included a new photo, seen above), Yates gives some hints about what we can expect from Fantastic Beasts 2

“We’ve seen the script for Part 2, for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new direction – as you should, you don’t want to repeat yourself. The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further. It’s a very interesting development from where we start out. The work is pouring out of her.”

It's tough to really know what that means at this point since we haven't seen the first movie yet, but it's good that Rowling is continuing to push herself and build out the universe beyond what she's already done. There's clearly a ton of untapped potential there. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters on November 18, 2016, and the sequel doesn't have an official release date yet.

New Batgirl Footage Appears From BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE

We are all unbelievably psyched for Batman: The Killing Joke over here at GeekTyrant, so I can't believe we missed this yesterday! DC All Access sat down with actress Tara Strong and talked about the upcoming animated feature and we see some fresh footage of Batgirl in the film!

One cool tidbit that Tara mentions is that she recently moved from Toronto. You'll notice a LOT of voice actors are from Toronto, as that's surprisingly where a majority of voice acting work originates from. Watch the full interview and see the footage below!

Yellow Ranger Cornered By Rita Repulsa in New POWER RANGERS Photo

Rita Repulsa apparently isn't playing games in the latest look at the new Power Rangers film! In a photo provided by Entertainment Weekly, we see Rita (played by Elizabeth Banks) choking the life out of Yellow Ranger Trini (played by Becky G):

To set the scene up, this takes place as Rita is trying to intimidate the Power Rangers individually. Becky G spoke about filming the scene with Banks:

"When we did our blocking, our run through, Elizabeth and I really wanted to make it fun, to make this scene as real as possible. Actually, I got to run through the wall a couple of times. I got thrown up against it and I got to break it myself. My stunt double of course was there, talking me through it, but I was really, really excited. It was a bit intimidating for me because, you know, it’s Elizabeth! I look up to her a lot as an actress, so getting to work one on one with her is really cool. I learned a lot, and there were moments when I had to hit her, and I was like, 'Oh my God, I hope I don’t actually hit her!' She really let me be hands on in a lot of the fighting, so it was cool."

Hilariously enough, Becky told Banks not to be gentle with her and ended up with bruises around her neck the next day!

I'm not going to pretend like I remember everything from the original Power Rangers, but I don't remember Rita getting in on the action all that much. From what I remember, she was always making monsters out of clay and looking through a telescope! To be fair, this Rita Repulsa looks like she can kick far more ass than the original, so I'll allow it. I'm really hoping we see something good out of this movie!

Read How Mark Hamill Thought Luke Skywalker Would Be Introduced in THE FORCE AWAKENS

0

Mark Hamill had a whole panel to himself this morning at Star Wars Celebration Europe, and io9 recounts the actor's story about how excited he was to read the first line in the script for The Force Awakens: "Luke Skywalker has vanished." He was as surprised as the rest of us to find out that he doesn't speak a single line in the entire movie and that Luke only pops up for a brief minute at the end, and he spent the whole first read-through guessing when he'd appear for the first time since Return of The Jedi.

“Where I thought I came in, I thought I came in when the lightsaber flies off [in the snow],” Hamill said. He then reacted surprised that it wasn’t him. “What? Rey caught it? She hasn’t even finished her training!”

And after mentioning that he was in the studio doing ADR for Episode VIII this past week, he dropped a tantalizing hint about the dialogue we'll hear in next year's sequel:

“There’s dialogue in there that I can see on a t-shirt,” he said. “Rian Johnson is amazing. Forget ‘May the Force be with you.’”

Admittedly, they'll put just about anything on a T-shirt these days, but Johnson is one of my favorite filmmakers, so I'm sure he's crafted some fantastic pieces of dialogue for these characters and I can't wait to hear them for myself. In case you missed it yesterday, be sure to check out this awesome art from Bottleneck Gallery that features Rey meeting Luke on Ahch-To.

First Official Concept Art For BLADE RUNNER Sequel

0
0

As a huge fan of Blade Runner, the idea of a sequel is both exciting and dreadful. With the cast and script locked down, the movie is going to start shooting soon. Director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario, Enemy) has a huge film to live up to, I can't imagine what the amount of pressure to get this right must be like. I have no doubt the film is going to look amazing, because Ridley Scott is one of the many producers on the project. My biggest worry is the story, but with the original writing team of Scott himself, Hampton Fancher, and franchise newcomer Michael Green involved, I'm hopeful.

It's going to be interesting to seeing Harrison Ford reprise his role across from Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, and Dave Bautista. Part of me wishes Ford wasn't involved so the mystery of the first film's ending stays ambiguous. Today, the first concept art for the film was released via EW. The signature style looks to be intact — the scene is wet, dark, foggy, and peppered with light. All fingers crossed...I hope it's good.

The yet-to-be-titled Blade Runner sequel will open in theaters October 6, 2017.

THE LOST BOYS is Getting a Sequel Comic Book

0
0

The Lost Boys is getting a true sequel, and it has nothing to do with that terrible 2008 film. Variety brings us the news that Vertigo comics is working on a direct sequel to the '80s film featuring the brothers Michael and Sam Emerson as they reteam with the Frog Brothers to face a new terror approaching Santa Clara: "a gang of ruthless, stunning, life-sucking nightcrawlers known as the Blood Belles."

Noted DC veteran Tim Seeley (Nightwing) and artists Scott Godlewski and Patricia Mulvihill will join him in the task of recreating the '80s cult classic. Here's what Seeley had to say about the project:

“I saw The Lost Boys at a formative time in my life, when a VHS, a VCR and a summer afternoon were a perfect escape into a crazy world of biker vampires with mullets and monster-fighting hippy grandpas...The Lost Boys was one of my entry points into the horror genre, and I’ve been fascinated ever since. Getting the chance to write a sequel to the film, featuring the original characters, and getting to work with Scott, Patricia and Tony is truly a high point in my comic book-making career.”

Anyone excited to see The Lost Boys get a true sequel that doesn't suck (pun intended)?

PETE'S DRAGON Takes Flight in New Clips

0
0

Two new clips from Disney and director David Lowery’s upcoming remake of Pete’s Dragon have hit the internet. Like everything else we’ve seen from the movie, these clips look wildly different from the 1977 original, which I have mixed feelings about. However, no matter whether you loved the original and think it shouldn’t be touched, or loved the original and think this should have been a shot for shot remake, or hated the original and think all extant copies should be burned, this new Pete’s Dragon looks really good.

The first clip shows Pete (Oakes Fegley) and Elliott (a dragon) playing in the forest, and holy mother does this dragon looks better than the original cartoony version. It also doesn’t look much like most dragons we’ve seen in anything ever. He’s definitely a dragon, but with the fur and the dog-like snout, he’s more Falkor than Drogon.

The second clip captures a quieter moment between Pete and Natalie (Oona Laurence) talking about imaginary friends.

Here is the film’s synopsis:

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Pete’s Dragon opens on August 12.

Red Band Trailer for Indie High School Comedy THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN

0

I've never had my best friend date my sibling, but I can tell you I'd be pissed for sure if it happened. The Edge of Seventeen takes a nightmare of mine and makes it seem just as bad as I could've imagined it. It's also pretty damn funny from the looks of the trailer! I really liked Hailee Steinfeld (who plays Nadine) in this trailer, and who could leave out Woody Harrelson?

The movie comes out sometime in 2016, and I think I'll see it when it does. I'm a fan of indie comedies though, so does it look that good to you?

SHERLOCK Creator Says Season 4 "Absolutely Could Be" Its Last, Plus See New Photo

0
0

The upcoming fourth season of the BBC's smash hit show Sherlock "absolutely could be" its last, according to creator/showrunner Steven Moffat. Along with a new photo featuring Benedict Cumberbatch's lead detective with a new canine friend (above), the Telegraph revealed a new interview with Moffat in which he seems to be slowly preparing fans for the possibility that the end is approaching:

“I don’t know how long we can keep it going. I’m personally willing but I’m hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be.”

Sounds kind of grim, right? Well, it might not be quite as bad as he's making it out to be. Citing the fact that Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman have obviously gone on to great success in the world of film and they only reason they come back to reprise their roles is "because they want to," he suggests that even if the stars do get too busy, they could always just take a break for a few years and come back to it later.

“That’s why I think it’s unlikely that we’ve completely finished it. There would be nothing strange in stopping for a while. It could go on forever, coming back now and again.”

With the long wait times Sherlock fans are already experiencing between seasons, I think it's fair to say that we'd all prefer a few year break rather than seeing Cumberbatch hang up the deerstalker for the last time.

Season four will air sometime in 2017 (at the earliest), with Toby Jones on board as the new villain. His character and the season's plots are a mystery, but Moffat says they won't be drawing from the famous Doyle tales you may be familiar with:

“There are stories that we are making use of in different ways. We’re using stories that people don’t know so much. Now we are getting into equally good, but far less well known, Conan Doyle stories."

Before I wrap this up, I also wanted to share this paragraph from the Telegraph's article with you:

The corporation yesterday released this photograph of Benedict Cumberbatch, clad in a scarf, posing with a bloodhound, but it would not provide any insight into the dog's role in the show.

For some reason, that struck me as hilarious funny. I guess I just love the image of a reporter breathlessly following a BBC rep, desperately begging for information about how a dog factors into the plot.

Here's the official season 4 synopsis:

Promising laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases, it was announced last month that series four will begin - with the nation’s favourite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil - as Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest ever challenge - becoming parents for the first time.

Alan Tudyk's Imperial Droid K-2SO Has an Attitude in STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE

0
0

One of the characters I've been most interested in learning about in Rogue One: The Star Wars Story is the droid character being played by Alan Tudyk. The droid's name is K-2SO, and thanks to Star Wars Celebration, we have some new revealing details about the character.

Actor Diego Luna says that the droid is a friend of his rebel fighter character in the movie, Cassian Andor. We've seen a brief bit of footage of K-2S0 already in the first trailer that was released. When describing the character, Luna says:

"One of the most important members of this team is a droid, an Imperial droid that is programmed by the rebellion. His name is K-2SO. He’s probably the best friend Cassian has in the Rebellion, or the only one."

During the presentation, there was a brief scene shown in which Jyn hands K-2SO her bag, and he doesn't like the idea of carrying it because he's not that kind of droid. This droid has an attitude. I took a few screenshots you can check out. Tudyk went on to talk about his character, explaining:

"That’s K-2 for you. Look, she gives him her pack and he doesn’t really grab it. That’s K-2: 'Go get the bags, droid.' 'No, I’d rather not. That’s not my thing.' Cassian reprogrammed him, and did like a data wipe. When he reprogrammed him, he’s not quite all there. He speaks his mind and says things, I don’t know, that can be unsettling. He’s very honest. If you know any old people, he’s like that; he just says whatever he thinks. It was great. It was really great to play him."

Sounds like a fun character! I love that he has an attitude. He will be a full CGI character, but Tudyk was on the set wearing a motion capture suit. The actor went on to talk about a funny exchange of conversation he had with Anthony Daniels, who plays C-3PO.

"I met him at that party, at the opening night [for The Force Awakens]. I said, 'I’m K-2SO. I’m going to be the next droid in the series of droids.' He said, 'Do you wear a suit or are you CGI?' I said, 'Oh, I’m CGI.' And he said, 'You shit.' Lovely man. We’re pen pals. Pen pals to this day."

Oh yeah! The robot is also seven feet tall. I'm looking forward to seeing how exactly his story arc will play out in the film. To catch up on all of our Rogue One news, click here

Review: STAR TREK BEYOND is a Solid Addition to The Trek Universe

0
0

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, so it makes sense that this summer's Star Trek Beyond in some ways feels like a throwback to the original series and has plenty of nods to the franchise's past. Thankfully, it isn't as much of an obvious retread of past material as Star Trek Into Darkness, largely due to the wise decision of director Justin Lin (Fast Five) and co-writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung to put the Enterprise crew squarely in the middle of their five-year mission to explore strange new worlds. This allows for the sorts of fresh moments, new species, and exploratory feeling many Trek fans felt were lacking in the previous two movies, and while this one definitely has some terrific moments, I still can't help but wish we got a more cerebral version of this story than the one we ended up with.

The Enterprise is three and a half years into its five-year mission, and Kirk is experiencing some cabin fever. He's getting tired of doing the same thing every day, and he's having an existential struggle about whether or not they're actually accomplishing anything out in the vastness of space. The crew docks at a planet-sized space station called Yorktown for a bit of a breather, but they're soon thrown into action to answer a distress call from a fellow Federation ship. As you've probably seen in the trailers, that turns out to be an ambush, and the Enterprise is destroyed in the ensuing attack, forcing the crew to abandon ship and splinter off into smaller groups on a nearby planet's surface to survive and figure out why they were attacked and what the villain is after.

I'm just going to get all of my gripes out of the way up front, so bear with me for a minute. Lin, who has proven capable of filming strong hand-to-hand fight sequences in the Fast & Furious movies, inexplicably drops the ball in that regard in Beyond. All of the one-on-one sequences are framed so tightly that the geography of the action becomes muddled. Every fight feels unnecessarily claustrophobic, and though I can't presume to understand the intricacies of directing a film on this scale, it seems like an easy fix would have been to simply place the camera a bit further back so the audience can better track what's going on. It happened so frequently that I started thinking it might be a tactic employed to purposefully obscure the sets. (I didn't notice any particular problems with any of the production design or shoddiness of any sets, but the framing was so peculiar I was inventing reasons in my head to try to justify it. It's a very strange filmmaking choice by Lin.)

There's also a big action set-piece in which some crew members slide down a ship's hull as the ship tips forward underneath them before threatening to flip and crush them, but I found it tough to follow exactly how this was all happening. An explosion closes out the beat, characters go flying, and then it cuts to a different angle where the consequences of the previous shots are unclear. I may just be misremembering the Fast movies, but I thought Lin had a better grasp of action filmmaking than this. Detractors will be quick to point out the similarities between one of this film's big action moments and an admittedly ludicrous Fast & Furious 6 scene in which two characters collide mid-air after jumping from moving vehicles. While that kind of thing works in the truly insane world of the Fast franchise, it feels a little out of place here.

Part of the problem could be that Lin didn't have much time to prep for the movie, with only a few months between his hiring and the start of production. Same for Pegg and Jung, who pull together a decent story that feels a little rushed, especially in its all-too-convenient climax. As much as I love Idris Elba as an actor, I didn't care for his villain character, Krall. It's a performance that reminded me a lot of Oscar Isaac's in X-Men: Apocalypse, in that the production hired one of the world's most charismatic actors only to bury him under tons of makeup and prosthetics. He tries to give the character some pathos, but his motivation is hidden for so long that by the time it's revealed, it almost feels like an afterthought. I can't talk about it in more detail without spoiling things, but suffice it to say I think the new Kelvin-verse continues to have a villain problem.

OK, on to the things I really liked. The core cast continues to wonderfully embody each of these characters, and they're just plain fun to watch. This movie does a great job of splitting them off into compelling configurations we haven't seen much of before, and while the previous two movies have chiefly been about how these characters all work in relation to Kirk, it's interesting to see how they all react when they're not at their normal stations on the Enterprise bridge. The original Shatner movies (I haven't seen the entire run of TOS yet), really leaned on the triumvirate of Kirk, Spock, and Bones, but the previous two Kelvin-verse movies have primarily concentrated on the Kirk/Spock relationship; this one finally gives Spock and Bones some time together to develop their dynamic, and it's the source of some of the film's funniest and most entertaining moments. Scotty meets a new character called Jaylah (Kingsman's Sofia Boutella), a warrior with a tragic backstory who's trying to escape Krall's planet, and it seems like Pegg capitalized on the opportunity to write some more for Scotty to do than simply yell about how he's giving the engines all they've got.

Even the combinations of characters we have seen before are terrifically satisfying. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is an early one between Kirk and Bones drinking scotch together on the Enterprise, talking about Kirk's birthday and how he's still trying to escape his father's shadow.

Aside from the hand-to-hand stuff (which only encompasses a few scenes), Lin does strong work with the whole rest of the movie. A few times, he mounts the camera to something that's moving and cuts to that to give us a unique angle on the action, which works like gangbusters when it's attached to the outside of the Enterprise and we see the ship leave the docking station and head out into space all in one quick shot. It gives you a sense of speed and distance that's nearly impossible to convey through wide shots, and I think it might have been the first time in the series when I felt the visceral feeling of, "Holy crap, this baby can really move."

There are a bunch of cool design elements, too, from the production design (including one notably impressive practical location, a rock quarry dressed up to look like an alien world) to Krall's ships (they swarm like bees in large groups, but I like them better when they're shown as individual attacking transport modules) to Jaylah's striking look. Boutella is an especially welcome addition to the cast, getting more to do here than any other female cast member. Though her character has a somewhat rote backstory, she's still a capable ass-kicker who makes us forget all about Alice Eve's Carol Marcus.

It's so clear that Lin and everyone else involved have a deep, abiding love for this franchise. That love — and being able to spend time with these characters — outweigh a lot of the puzzling or questionable aspects of this story for me, and despite my many issues with it, the experience was still mostly positive. With a new CBS TV show by Bryan Fuller looming next year, it seems clear that the franchise is in a stable place moving forward, and there are already whispers of a fourth film on the horizon. The saddest thing about that is the team will never feel fully complete again without Anton Yelchin. I can't imagine them recasting that role, but it also seems strange to just write Chekov out of this timeline forever, so I certainly don't envy whoever ends up making the decision about that for future films. (There's also an in-movie nod to Leonard Nimoy's death, so they address that as well.) Otherwise, though, I'm excited about the opportunity to see these actors reunite again. Hopefully the franchise continues to push the boundaries and boldly go where they've never gone before.

Rumor: James Franco Might Be Wanted For Shane Black's THE PREDATOR

0
0

Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and The Nice Guys writer/director Shane Black is hard at work on the script for The Predator, a reboot (or is it a sequel?) of the classic '80s action movie Predator, but we haven't heard much when it comes to casting. That changed when the new episode of Meet The Movie Press came out and reporter Jeff Sneider claimed that none other than James Franco is being pushed for the lead of the new movie.

Franco is all over the place as an actor, and the main reason I'm even writing about this is because of a decent point Sneider brings up: Franco has a good track record with 20th Century Fox right now. He starred in Rise of the Planet of the Apes for them a little while back, and he stars opposite Bryan Cranston in the big Christmas comedy Why Him?, so it's feasible the studio likes him.

While he may not be the first guy that comes to mind for a presumably beefy role like this, I can easily see him bulking up, taking the part seriously, and surprising a lot of people if the tone is handled correctly. He may not even be trying to compete with Schwarzenegger in that department, because news recently came out that the film's lead character is named Quinn Mackenna. That name alone seems to fit Franco more than something like "Dutch." That's assuming, of course, that he's actually cast in this movie, which is still very much in doubt since we've been told this is just a rumor and even Sneider himself admits "maybe Franco isn't Black's top choice."
