Shawn Levy Teases Casting For STARMAN Remake

0
0

A few months ago, word came out that Night at the Museum and Real Steel director Shawn Levy would be remaking John Carpenter's 1980s sci-fi love story Starman. While Levy was out promoting the new Spielberg-influenced Netflix series Stranger Things (which he executive produces), Levy spoke with ComingSoon about the tone of the new Starman and finding a leading man to step into Jeff Bridges' alien shoes:

“I have to say, I was really inspired by this show,” Levy told us. “I haven’t done television in a long time, the movies have kept me really busy. I hadn’t done this genre or this tone. It came to me really organically and it’s definitely something I want to keep doing and ‘Starman’ is a very rich opportunity to do that.
“I do [have casting ideas], but they would kill me at Sony if I mentioned it. I’ll just very enigmatically say that some of my top ideas are people I’ve worked with before either as a director or a producer.”

ComingSoon helpfully compiled this list of actors he's worked with in that capacity, in what they perceive to be the order of likelihood that the actor would be cast in this movie: Hugh Jackman (Real Steel), Mark Ruffalo (Date Night), Adam Driver (This is Where I Leave You), Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now), Anthony Mackie (Real Steel), Bradley Cooper (The Rocker), Steve Carrell (Date Night), Mark Wahlberg (Date Night), Corey Stoll (This is Where I Leave You), Jeremy Renner (Arrival), Rami Malek (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb), Dan Stevens (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb), James Franco (Date Night, Why Him?), Wyatt Russell (Table 19), Ben Stiller (Night at the Museum trilogy, The Watch), Owen Wilson (The Internship, Night at the Museum trilogy), Jason Bateman (This is Where I Leave You), Vince Vaughn (The Internship, The Watch).

In that list, one name stands out to me: Rami Malek. I think the Mr. Robot star could bring a similar otherworldly quality to the role, and it'd be a nice step up into leading man territory on the big screen.

Levy spoke at length about his love for the original, which may quell some fears of fans who think he's remaking it purely on name recognition alone:

“To me, I think it’s brilliant,” Levy insisted. “It was an Oscar nomination for Jeff Bridges, it’s thick with ideas and incredibly rich with romantic feelings, and those are the things I’m going to carry over into this updated version. I don’t know why it’s kind of separate in the canon of Carpenter, but I think it’s magnificent. The premise is filled with ideas that are interesting to revisit in a different way in 2016. It fits less neatly in his genre legacy, but I think it’s absolutely one of his finest films. I am going to try to be faithful to the romantic spine to the story but also the fish-out-of-water humor which is genuinely charming and winning in a way that Carpenter and Bridges filmed it.”

It certainly seems like he's passionate about the original, but we'll have to wait and see if his good intentions translate into a good remake.

With Star Trek Beyond just over a week away from release and the 50th anniversary of Trek upon us, 2016 is undoubtedly a huge year for Trek fans (do you prefer the term Trekkies or Trekkers these days? It's hard to keep up). Earlier today, I wrote about some cool artwork that celebrates the franchise, and now the team at Costume SuperCenter has put together an infographic that tracks the history of uniforms through most of the incarnations of Star Trek over the years, from the original series all the way through to the new movie. Take a look, and let us know what your favorite costume iteration is in the comments below:

Watch: 24 Reasons GHOSTBUSTERS II and PIXELS Are The Same Movie

At first glance, Ghostbusters II and the Adam Sandler "comedy" Pixels may not appear to have that much in common. But as Couch Tomato points out in this brand new video comparison, there's a lot more shared storytelling DNA there than meets the eye. I'll admit when I first saw the title of this video, I thought it would be a stretch to list 24 similarities, but every one of these is totally legit and there are some weirdly specific coincidences, too — like the female lead rocking a green dress on a mid-movie date. Check it out below:

First Photo of Negan from THE WALKING DEAD Season 7 Plus New Info on the Villain

first-photo-of-negan-from-the-walking-dead-season-7-plus-new-details4

The first photos from The Walking Dead season seven features Negan continuing to taunt Rick and his group with his barbed-wire bat, Lucille. If this image takes place after killing someone from the group his bat would be pretty bloody, but I imagine they cleaned that up for this image. It wouldn’t be the first time blood was removed from an official photo from a movie or TV show. Or it could be a completely different scene and I'm reading into it wrong.

We’ve got awhile to wait before we found out who met their demise, but the producers of the series promise the answer will come in the season seven premiere. Greg Nicotero told EW:

“Yes, who was at the receiving end of Negan’s bat will be revealed in the first episode.”

So that’s a plus. I was worried they’d make us wait a few episodes before we found out. Nicotero went on to talk about Negan, and teased that the character has plenty more speeches and rants to come. He explained the character, saying:

“Negan is that kind of guy. He’s the kind of guy who imagines himself on stage at a high school production and he loves every second of it. So, I don’t really see a lot of quiet contemplative moments with Negan. I feel like with Negan it’s really going to be about him gesticulating and him sort of relishing in the sound of his own voice while he commands the stage in front of whoever’s alive.”

With Comic-Con coming up next week, we will learn more about what’s to come during the panel that takes place on Friday, July 22nd, so stay tuned!

The first clip from Star Wars Rebels season three has been released thanks to The Star Wars Show, and Ezra has gone through some pretty big changes. He’s got a band new haircut, an upgraded fighting skill level, and a new lightsaber to kick ass with.

This is a good sized clip, and it centers on Ezra, Zeb, and Sabine breaking the character Hondo out of an Imperial facility. The breakout isn't without its challenges, and the team is being chased by a team of Stormtroopers that they have to fend off. Hondo notices that Ezra has done a enhanced his skills since the events that unfolded on Malachor as he takes down a few Stormtroopers with his new lightsaber.

You can watch the clip at the 3:40 mark in the embed below, and it runs for over two minutes. I imagine we will see even more footage from Star Wars Rebels season three as Star Wars Celebration is coming up this next weekend!

Concept Art from a Scrapped DEADPOOL Film Pitch from KICK-ASS 2 Director

concept-art-from-a-scrapped-deadpool-film-pitch-from-kick-ass-2-director1

If Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow would have ended up making a Deadpool movie, the character would have looked a lot different than the classic character design we got in in Tim Miller's film.

Wadlow was developing a pitch for his own take on the Merc With a Mouth, and he had concept artist Kelton Cram whip up some weird and crazy looking Deadpool designs. They're interesting and aspects of the designs are cool, but definitely not for Deadpool.

There's a third piece of concept art that features Stone Cold Steve Austin as a character named Random, who would have appeared as one of The Mauraders in the film. According to ComicBook.com, Wadlow wanted to show a progression/evolution of Wade Wilson's superhero costume. Cram told them in an interview:

"We wanted to try a completely new direction with the suit. More of an origin suit — a self-made, makeshift suit made from motorcycle gear. As with most origin stories, this suit would go through a transition, eventually becoming something closer to the one he wears in the comics (much like the suit Blur created for Ryan Reynolds)."

Apparently, Wadlow was looking to do a more gritty and realistic approach to Deadpool, that let's be honest... it's Deadpool and that wouldn't have worked at all.

Netflix Renews BLOODLINE for Season 3

0
0

If you haven’t watched the first two seasons of Bloodline on Netflix yet, you need to remedy that right away. This is such a brilliantly crafted, intense, and twisted family drama that needs to be seen. With the way season two ended I hoped we would get to see a third season, and that next season is coming.

THR reports that the renewed show will get another 10 episodes and that it will return in 2017. Apparently there was a chance that season three wouldn’t happen because Florida’s state tax incentives expired and the state legislature voted against replenishing the funds, which means it will cost Sony Pictures and Netflix even more money to develop the series, which is shot in the state. It’s awesome that Netflix believes in the show so much that they are willing to pay the extra cash to make it happen.

The series was created by Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman, and Glenn Kessler, and when they first started their journey to tell this story they had a five to six season plan. Hopefully it gets past the third season because I would love to see their full vision of this series realized.

Bloodline has an amazing cast which includes Kyle Chandler, Linda Cardellini, Ben Mendelsohn, Sissy Spacek, John Leguizamo, Norbert Leo Butz, and more. This is a top-notch drama with top-notch storytelling, and I couldn’t be happier that Netflix is bringing it back!

Danny McBride Says There’s No Comedy in ALIEN: COVENANT: “This Shit is Dark!”

0
0

When Danny McBride was cast in Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant I figured he would provide some comic relief to the movie, but that doesn’t sound like the case at all. It was recently revealed that the actor will be playing a pilot of the Covenant ship, and he will not be providing any type of comic relief. During an interview with HitFix, McBride talked about his experience meeting with Scott for the part::

"When Ridley asked me to come in and read I didn't even know what movie it was for and he starts talking to me about it and then starts showing me these diagrams of spaceships and I'm just thinking 'Fuck, this is Alien, he's talking to me about Alien right now'. And my next thought was: Why would he be interested in me for this, am I going to just be the comic relief in this?"

We’ve seen plenty of sci-fi and horror films that have some comic relief in them, but Alien: Covenant isn’t one of them. The actor says:

"I got the script and I’m like this shit is dark! There is no comic relief in this at all. This is a dark horror movie. And that was exciting. To be able to step into something like that and to participate in a way [that's] not relying on things I’d done before."

That’s awesome to hear! That’s what I loved so much about the very first Alien film. It was a dark sci-fi horror film, so it’s encouraging to hear that Scott is looking to capture that nightmarish tone again. That’s something that Prometheus kind of lacked.

The movie also stars Katherine Waterston, Michael Fassbender, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, and Callie Hernandez. Alien: Covenant will open in theaters on August 4th, 2017. For more information on the film click here.

BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE Won’t Be Mark Hamill's Last Time Playing The Joker

0
0

Mark Hamill’s version of The Joker will always be the definitive version of the character for me. He just owns it every time he voices the legendary DC villain. At one point he said he was going to retire from doing the character, but then he came back for the animated adaptation of Alan Moore’s Batman: The Killing Joke, and now it seems like he’s not going to stop playing the character anytime soon.

A fan recently asked Hamill on Twitter if The Killing Joke would be his last time voicing the character, and his answer was simply, “No.”

Every time he plays the character, fans like me wonder if it will be his last. The fact that he said no makes me wonder if maybe there’s another Batman animated film project in the works that hasn’t been revealed yet. If so, there’s a good chance that he’s already attached to it.

Who knows, maybe something will be announced at Comic-Con during the Panel after the world premiere of Batman: The Killing Joke. I’m just happy to hear that we haven’t heard the last of Hamill as The Joker.

Beautifully Badass Trailer for the Fantasy Martial Arts Film LEAGUE OF GODS with Jet Li

You guys have got to watch this trailer for a new Chinese fantasy martial arts film called League of Gods. This thing is legit badass! The film is based on the 16th-century Chinese novel Feng Shen Yan Yi (The Investiture of the Gods), and the story tells of how King Zhou of Shang becomes a tyrant due to the wiles of Daji, a vixen spirit who is disguised as one of his concubines.

The film is also described as the "Chinese X-Men," and it looks batshit insane. The trailer is packed with all kinds of awesome elements mixed in with some really weird stuff like a CG baby with farting superpowers and a strange-looking plant. As you'll see in the trailer, though, there is a lot of cool and beautiful imagery. This thing looks like one crazy epic adventure that's going to be an absolute blast to watch.

The film stars Fan Bingbing, Louis Koo, Tony Ka Fai Leung, and Jet Li. Asia Releasing will release the film in US theaters starting July 29th.

Optimus Prime Fights a Three-Headed Dragon on Billboard for TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT

0
0

Here's a photo of a New York City billboard for Transformers: The Last Knight that's surfaced, thanks to the people at Seibertron. As you can see, it includes Optimus Prime facing off against a three-headed mechanized dragon of some sort. You can get a closer look in these images:

As io9 helpfully points out:

Megatron has transformed into a dragon mode in a few Transformers stories, beginning back in the Beast Wars cartoon, and he even had a two-headed dragon mode in Robots in Disguise. However, the only robot that’s ever also been a three-headed dragon is Scourge in the Transformers: Cybertron cartoon (he’s one of the Decepticons on Animatron, the Beast Planet).

Apparently there's also a dragon connection with the very first episode of the animated series, in which Optimus and the crew get sent back to the mythical time of King Arthur. That was just a normal dragon and not a mechanized/Transformer one, but I wonder if there is an Arthurian connection with The Last Knight subtitle? When we last saw Optimus, he was shooting himself into space at the end of Age of Extinction to...find out where he came from? Or something? I don't know, I only sat through that slogfest once in theaters, and I don't ever plan on watching it again. Michael Bay's going to have to pull a lot more out of his hat than "Optimus fights a three-headed dragon this time" to get me to go see The Last Knight when it comes out on June 23, 2017.

Just a couple of days ago, we wrote about YouTuber Paweł Zadrożniak's cover of John Williams' Star Wars music played on 64 floppy disk drives. Well, he's baaaaaaaack...

Just a few weeks after the mostly-awesome sixth season of Game of Thrones came to an end, the master of floppy disk music has returned with his own version of the HBO fantasy show's theme song. You can find out more about how this mechanical orchestra works right here.

Season seven of Game of Thrones may be slightly delayed, but in the meantime, check this out:

Watch: Warren Beatty's Howard Hughes Film RULES DON'T APPLY Finally Gets a Trailer

0
0

We often end up writing about movies that have been stuck in various stages of development for years that eventually find the right circumstances to finally coalesce into a finished movie. That's the mercurial nature of the industry, but here's a passion project that's the longest-running dream I can remember. Warren Beatty (Dick Tracy) has been working on a Howard Hughes movie for forty years (!), and 20th Century Fox has just released the first trailer and poster. It's called Rules Don't Apply, and it's not a traditional biopic; he plays Hughes, but Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich (who starred in Hail, Caesar!, another Hollywood period piece, and will star in the upcoming Han Solo spin-off) are the main characters who move to Hollywood in the late fifties and get swept up in a forbidden romance.

I'd suggest watching the first minute or two of this trailer to see if it looks like something you'd be interested in, and then not finishing it. As usual with trailers these days, it seems to give away a majority of the storyline, and I sort of feel like I've seen the whole movie already.

Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Annette Bening, Steve Coogan, Ed Harris, and more co-star.

Rules Don't Apply hits theaters on November 23, 2016.

There’s a New Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy Romance Brewing in Marvel NOW!

Marvel_NOW_catalog_64.jpg
spider-man-12-marvel-now-23fd5.jpg

Marvel Comics recently released their Marvel NOW! Previews Magazine, and it teases a new budding romance between Miles Morales’ Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Gwen of Earth-65.

As both individual comics continue, you can see in the images that Marvel isn't holding back any teases of what’s to come. The two characters are most definitely getting together.

The cover of Spider-Gwen #15 shows Miles and Gwen swinging through New York City, and it comes with the tagline, “Miles and Gwen sitting in a tree…” Then, you can see on the cover of Spider-Man #12 the two heroes are hanging upside down locking lips and the tagline for that is, “K-I-S-S-I-N-G.”

This is great for any fans who were hoping to see this happen, but if you weren’t and you wanted to see Miles end up with the likes of Ms. Marvel, who was recently added to the Avengers roster, you’re shit out of luck and you’re just going to have to deal with it.

In case you’re not up to speed, this is not the Gwen Stacy from the main Marvel universe. She was Peter Parker's long time love interest who ended up being killed by Green Goblin. This new Gwen Stacy is an entirely different person who is Spider-Woman, and she has a completely different history. It still seems a bit weird to see a different version of Spider-Man getting romantically involved with a different version of Gwen, but that’s just comic book life, folks!

Both these comics will be released in the Fall of 2016 as a part of the Marvel NOW! lineup.

THE DARK TOWER - First Official Images of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey

the-dark-tower-first-official-images-released-of-idris-elba-and-matthew-mcconaughey

The cover of Entertainment Weekly's yearly Comic-Con preview issue has been released, and out of every film it could present, they went with The Dark Tower, which was unexpected yet awesome! It gives us our first official look at  Idris Elba as The Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Black.

Stephen King's The Dark Tower saga spans eight novels along with a few assorted short stories and comic books. The report says that the new movie "picks elements from throughout these writings to assemble a new take on the story of Roland the Gunslinger (Idris Elba) and his pursuit of the sorcerer known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), who intends to collapse the tower and rule the ruins and chaos alongside a sinister force known as the Crimson King."

The upcoming issue will be packed full of information regarding the film, and they offer a list of some of what you will find including another photo of Elba at the bottom:

  • Exclusive photos, showing the vast plains of Mid-World, the shadowy Dixie Pig hideaway of the demons who infest our world, and the visions of a boy named Jake Chambers (Tom Holloway) who is either the key to saving the mythic Tower or the instrument of its destruction.
  • Revelations from director Nikolaj Arcel (the Oscar-nominated A Royal Affair, and one of King’s lifelong Constant Readers) about where the story picks up, which elements from the novels are being explored – and which are being left out.
  • Elba on the redemption story of Roland, who has “forgotten the face of his father” (or lost his way) in his relentless pursuit of the Man in Black. The actor also comments for the first time about race-swapping the Gunslinger, who until now has always been depicted as white.
  • McConaughey on the loneliness of evil, the reasons his villain “reveres” the hero chasing him, and why The Man in Black has taken a real shine to present-day New York City.
  • Finally, as an extra treat, King himself weighs in on the film, explains what he asked to change in the script, and provides new insight into how the Tower saga connects to some of his other books, like The ShiningThe Stand, and one long-ago short story.

So if you're a fan of The Dark Tower series, this upcoming issue is something you'll most definitely want to pick up. Of course, you can always count on us to report on the highlights.

The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum.  It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.

The movie also stars Abbey Lee as Tirana and Fran Kranz as Pimli with Katheryn Winnick, Jackie Earl Haley, and Richard Sayre.

The Dark Tower is being directed by Nikolaj Arcel, and the first film is set to be released on February 17th, 2017.
