Two New Images Unveiled For ASSASSIN'S CREED Movie

$

20th Century Fox has released two new images from its highly-anticipated upcoming film adaptation of Assassin's Creed, with star Michael Fassbender front and center in each one. The first (above) shows the actor in full assassin costume, while the second (below) seems to depict a modern day fight at Abstergo. It's tough to tell what kind of weapon he's hoisting there, but it may be something new created specifically for the film. The phrase "We work in the dark to serve the light" appears in their tweet, and I assume we'll be hearing those words (which pop up in the games) spoken in the film as well.

Based on the Ubisoft game franchise, the Assassin’s Creed movie follows a character by the name of Callum Lynch who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Be sure to check out the footage that was released at E3 if you haven't seen that yet. Assassin's Creed hits theaters on December 21, 2016.

Danny McBride and Walton Goggins' New HBO Comedy VICE PRINCIPALS Will Only Last Two Seasons

Variety caught up with Danny McBride and director Jody Hill during the red carpet premiere of HBO's hilarious-looking new comedy Vice Principals, and they found out something I hadn't heard about the show before: it's only going to last a total of eighteen episodes across two seasons. McBride told them:

"The whole series is only 18 episodes and that’s it. We just wanted to make a really long movie. It’s one school year and a complete story. This was an old screenplay that Jody [Hill] and I wrote back in 2006. But we needed it to be longer so we added and reworked it and broke it up into 18 segments. HBO trusted us to make those episodes without anyone watching them, so they really, really trust us."

When the reporter pressed Hill about whether or not there would be more episodes if the first two seasons performed well, he simply said, "No. We already shot the 18 episodes and that’s it."

Vice Principals stars McBride and Walton Goggins (Justified, The Shield) as a pair of high school vice principals competing against each other for the newly-vacated principal position, and from everything we've seen so far, it appears they're willing to go to truly insane lengths to win that job. It's nice to hear everyone has had a vision for exactly what this series is going to be from the very beginning and they won't have to scramble to come up with extra material to keep it alive past its intended length. The series premieres on July 17 on HBO. Check out the most recent trailer below:

Villain Has Trouble Timing The Perfect Turn-Around in Hilarious Short

Part of being a villain is having great timing. You can't just be spooked by some spy when he walks in and let out a high-pitched squeal as he punches you in the face! You have to be prepared! As this short from Chris and Jack will show you, it takes some practice. Great work guys. (Editor's note: this video stars Dante Basco, who played Rufio in Steven Spielberg's Hook!)

Here's What Marvel's New Teenage Iron Man Armor Looks Like

A couple of days ago, Marvel Comics announced that the new Iron Man in the All-New relaunch of Invincible Iron Man will be a 15-year-old black girl named Riri Williams. ComicBookResources revealed what the character's armor is going to look like with this art by Stefano Caselli that you can see in full above. Looks pretty rad to me, and it's especially cool that there isn't anything here to indicate that a female is wearing the armor — it's sleek, functional, and would serve the wearer well regardless of gender.

Marvel's Invincible Iron Man #1, starring Riri Williams and written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Caselli, hits shelves this October. What do you think about the character's new armor?

Check Out This Art From Genndy Tartakovsky's Long-Delayed Luke Cage Comic, Which Will Debut This Fall

Genndy Tartakovsky, the man behind Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Star Wars: Clone Wars, has been planning a Luke Cage comic for Marvel since 2007, but since he got so busy with the Hotel Transylvania movies and other projects that it never came out. But Birth.Movies.Death has confirmed that after years of waiting, fans will finally get to see the new limited series, entitled Cage!, this October. They spoke with Tartakovsky — who will write the series and provide the art — by e-mail, and he provided a few details about the 1970s-set series (including the fact that we'll see '70s versions of other Marvel favorites in its pages). Here's a quick selection from the Q&A:

Who initiated this return to Cage!? Was it you or did Marvel reach out? How did it happen?
Well I was doing press for Hotel Transylvania 2 and coincidently I found my thumbnails around the same time and thought that they still held up. Then on the press tour I kept getting questions about it so I thought for fun I would say “I’m willing to finish it if Marvel is still interested.” Sure enough it spread through the internet and the editor from Marvel contacted me.
Luke Cage is having a new moment in the sun because of Netflix. Will this series be aimed towards new readers or is it full of references aimed at people with Power Man and Iron Fist in their long boxes?
Well growing with those comics in the 70’s and 80’s I have a very strong fondness of that version of Power Man so my version is very rooted in that time, but I think it is totally fun and feels new. It was about making something entertaining with a character that I really liked. So I think it can appeal to young and old readers.

And here's the official breakdown for the first issue:

CAGE! #1 (of 4)
GENNDY TARTAKOVSKY (W) • GENNDY TARTAKOVSKY (A/C)
From the Award-Winning creator of Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack and Hotel Transylvania! On the mean streets of Harlem, shoes are big, shirts are large, bottoms are belled and crime is rampant! But in the heart of the city, the world’s hardest-working, smack-talking, chain-wearing super hero is on the street and on the case! And his rates are reasonable! He’s CAGE! and he’ll save your behind. Dig it!

During a Dark Time in The World, POKEMON GO is a Bright Light Uniting People in Fun and Joy

We are living in some dark and depressing times. As you have probably already heard, yesterday America was rocked by the latest senseless shootings that have left several human beings dead. I’m not going to get into the politics of this stuff, but needless to say, a lot of people were feeling scared, angry, sad, and confused.

After talking to my kids about the things that were going on because it was all over the news, they were a little apprehensive about leaving the house and going outside. I downloaded Pokemon Go the night before, so I opened up the app to show it to them. They immediately got excited. My brothers had already downloaded the app so I called them to set a time to meet up later that evening to go on a hunt to catch some Pokemon. We just all had to get out of the house and have a little fun.

We went out, got some milkshakes, and the Pokemon hunt began! We were traveling all over the place looking for Pokemon to catch. It started in the parking lot in the shopping center where we got our milkshakes, and that’s when I saw it: a couple sitting in a car with their smiling faces deep in their phones. I immediately knew what they were doing. They looked up at me and I flashed them a thumbs up, they both had huge smiles on their faces as they offered me a thumbs up in return. It was an immediate unspoken bond of Pokemon. After catching their Pokemon, they got out of the car and we exchanged a few words about how awesome Pokemon Go was, and everyone continued on their way. I thought it was a fun coincidence and didn’t think much more of it.

We ultimately ended up at a park with a ton of landmarks to refill on Pokeballs and other supplies, and there were also lots of Pokemon to catch. While we were all running around looking for Pokemon, we came across several other people doing the exact same thing. I don’t know why, but I didn’t think other people would be out catching Pokemon like that, but they were and there we a ton of them! It was awesome!

There were so many people we met on our little adventure and we had lots of good conversations with them. These were complete strangers with the like-minded goal of catching Pokemon and leveling up. We shared stories about the Pokemon we’ve caught, where we found them, gave tips and advice, and just talked about how much fun we were all having.

Everyone had huge smiles on their faces there was non-stop laughing and cheers as people would gather around to watch each other catch the Pokemon they had found. Everyone was running around in newly-formed groups of people that had never met before and there was this awesome unity of people of all ages, races, nationalities, and religions coming together to embark on the epic adventure of finding and catching Pokemon. It was really quite an amazing, unexpected experience. I’ve never really experienced anything like this before.

I thought we would go out for about an hour, the kids would get tired, and we’d go home. But before we knew it, it was 11pm, the kids were pumped and excited, and we had to reluctantly call it a night because all the adults had work in the morning. I honestly haven’t had that much fun playing around outside in a long time. It was really quite refreshing and I can’t wait to do it again with my family and friends!

I thought maybe we’d see one or two other people out hunting Pokemon, but the number of people out there that we bonded with was staggering. From my experience last night, Pokemon Go is uniting people, forming bonds, and strengthening the community, and people are having a blast using it and finding joy and happiness in it. Pokemon Go is a bright light in a dark time. If it’s like that in the community I’m in, I imagine it’s happening like that in communities all over the nation and the world. I hope it is!

This is just from my own personal experience. I’m not here to talk about the gameplay or how the app is performing. I just wanted to talk about the social aspect of it and how I see it as a good, fun, and positive thing to be a part of. Get out there, explore your community, meet new people, make new friends, catch Pokemon, and level up in the process!

With bad things happening in the world, it’s comforting to know that there are other good people out there in our communities doing good and having fun. How cool is it that a game like Pokemon Go could help bring those people together and strengthen communities? This is a time in which we NEED to unite with each other, and if Pokemon Go can help play a small part in that unification...awesome!

Ubisoft Admits The ASSASSIN'S CREED Movie is "A Marketing Thing" To Sell More Video Games

$

0

Earlier this morning, I wrote about how 20th Century Fox released two new images from the Assassin's Creed movie, but here's something far more interesting about the film: in an interview with MCV, Ubisoft's European boss Alaine Corre admitted that the movie is just a way to sell more video games:

“We are not going to earn a lot of money from [the movie]. It is a lot more a marketing thing, it is also good for the image of the brand. Although we will make some money, it is not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin’s Creed to more people. We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin’s Creed games.”

Hey, that's...actually refreshingly honest! You'd never hear Bob Iger say in an interview that Disney is willing to take the tradeoff of a Star Wars movie performing poorly because it increases brand awareness. Corre's quote almost suggests a lack of care about the film, and it looks like someone at Ubisoft's corporate office got worried about that perception, because they quickly issued a follow-up statement to the outlet:

"Ubisoft's core vision is to create top quality entertainment and experiences. For the Assassin’s Creed film, we have worked closely with our partners at New Regency and 20th Century Fox as well as the talented cast and production team from the very beginning to ensure we deliver a quality experience to ours fans. We strongly believe the Assassin’s Creed brand has this cross-over appeal that will please both video games fans and movie goers."

When it all comes down to it, though, Corre's right: their company is built on video game sales, and they can make a hell of a lot more money selling games than making movies. It's OK that Michael Fassbender's Assassin's Creed is just a $100+ commercial for their product, because as Phil Lord and Chris Miller showed us in The LEGO Movie, just because a movie's main reason for existence is to pimp something else doesn't mean it can't also stand on its own as a solid piece of entertainment.

THE FLASH: Three Actresses in The Running (Get It?) For The DC Film's Female Lead

Last we heard about Warner Bros. and DC's big-screen version of The Flash, one-time director Seth Grahame-Smith had been replaced by Dope director Rick Famuyima. Today, a report has surfaced that Famuyima is considering reteaming with one of his Dope stars as he narrows his search for the film's female lead to star opposite Ezra Miller.

Variety says actress Kiersey Clemons (who played Diggy in Dope) is the director's top choice for the role, which insiders are claiming is Iris West, the character currently played by Candice Patton on The CW series. THR's Borys Kit jumped on Twitter to add two more names that are in contention for the role: Lucy Boynton (Sing Street) and singer Rita Ora (Fifty Shades of Grey, Southpaw).

The studio is reportedly keeping Grahame-Smith's screenplay, which he wrote based on a treatment by 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie writer/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The Flash doesn't have a release date yet, but production is supposedly set to begin sometime this year. We'll next see Miller playing the Scarlet Speedster in Zack Snyder's Justice League on November 17, 2017.

The Most Recent Episode of PREACHER Delivered The Show's First True "Holy Sh*t" Moment

$
0
0

The pilot episode of AMC's Preacher was an excellent introduction to the characters and the world of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's seminal comic series, but I have to admit that the subsequent episodes have been pretty damn slow. It's certainly had its moments, and it's done a good job of capturing the essence of the characters (especially Tulip and Cassidy). The decision to keep the first season set in Annville instead of having the characters immediately hit the road like they do in the comics (at least I think that's how it goes down — I haven't revisited the comics in probably ten years) is understandable from a budgetary perspective and from the angle of trying to give an audience unfamiliar with the comic a little bit of solid ground to stand on before the story really gets crazy. But at the same time, it's largely slowed the pacing down to a crawl. I'm grateful the show has been renewed for a second season, because that should let showrunner Sam Catlin feel like he has some breathing room, and I'm really hoping they start to embrace more of the comic roots in season two.

(Spoilers ahead.)

The pace finally picked up in the show's fifth episode, "Sundowner," which was directed by famed cinematographer Guillermo Navarro (Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim). It opened with the explanation of Jesse Custer's powers (it's not God giving him these abilities, but Genesis, the offspring of a forbidden romance between an angel and a demon) and transitioned into a bloody, brutal, no holds barred fight that pitted Jesse, Fiore, and DeBlanc (the angels who want Genesis back) against a seraphim, with Cassidy getting in on the action as well. It recalled the insane violence we saw in the airplane fight scene from the pilot episode, which I'm sure many of you would choose as the show's first "holy sh*t" moment.

Maybe it's because I read the comics so I knew what sort of tone the show would have, but the violence never really surprised me too much. Thus far, the show has played out more or less the way I expected it to, albeit a little slower than I would have liked. But the end of "Sundowner" was the first time the series did something to make me audibly gasp and cover my mouth with my hand (I realize that's a cliched reaction, but it actually happened for real): and that was having Jesse send Eugene to hell.

We spend a decent chunk of time in this episode worried about Eugene as a couple of his peers suddenly start saying hi to him, sitting with him at lunch, and invite him to a dark tunnel after school. Eugene suspiciously goes along with them, waiting for a cruel prank to come at any moment...but it never does. It seemed to me like this revelation was what caused him to confront Jesse later in the episode and ask him to take back what he said to Tracy Loach's mother about forgiving him. Though he doesn't know about Genesis specifically, he does know something's going on with Jesse, and when calls him out for "cheating," Jesse gets furious with him. An argument erupts, and it ends with Jesse yelling "Go to hell, Eugene!" with "The Voice" (which forces people [and, as we discovered in this episode, angels] to do anything he says), and Eugene disappearing into thin air.

It's a horrifying moment centered not on shock and awe or crazy violence, but on character. Eugene has proven to be the most innocent, purely nice character on the show so far, and while it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to imagine Cassidy or even Tulip maybe holding their own in hell for a little while, thinking about poor Eugene being there is just awful. To make matters worse, Jesse knows deep down that Eugene is right, but he's let the power of Genesis go to his head.

What did you think of last week's episode?

Creepy Alternate Designs for The Crooked Man in THE CONJURING 2

James Wan’s The Conjuring 2 is such a great horror movie. It’s one of my favorite movies of the year and one of my favorite parts of it was The Crooked Man. The creepy character was inspired by the children’s nursery rhyme and it was nightmarishly terrifying.

The character was so unnatural in the way it looked in the film that a lot of people thought it was a CGI creation, but it wasn’t! That was live action and it was played by Mama actor Javier Botet. Wan confirmed the this in the following tweet he previously sent out.

We’ve also got a few pieces of creepy cool concept art of The Crooked Man character that were created by conceptual artist Jared Krichevsky (Krampus). The artist reveals that Wan initially envisioned The Crooked Man "with a large moon face,” which as you can see is kind of horrific.
