RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK Face-Melting Candle

Here's an interesting piece of Indiana Jones-related ephemera that might be worth grabbing for the diehard Raiders of the Lost Ark fan in your life: a candle that depicts the sniveling Gestapo agent Toht getting his face melted off. BoingBoing points us to this absurd (and kind of awesome) candle that, once lit, slowly recreates one of the film's most memorable deaths. Firebox is selling it for $28.39, so what are you waiting for?

Whether it left you with nightmares for weeks or just had you repeatedly hitting the re-wind button, celebrate the greatest death in all of cinema history with the Melting Toht Candle. Thankfully this detailed replica won't melt quite as fast so you can really savour the moment.

James Wan Set to Direct New Premiere Episode of CBS' MACGYVER Reboot

James Wan is officially set to direct the first episode of CBS' upcoming series reboot of MacGyver. Wan is one of my favorite directors, who most recently directed The Conjuring 2. He's also got a few other film projects lined up such as Aquaman and Robotech, so he's keeping himself busy!

Wan made a name for himself reinvigorating the horror franchise, and it's great to see that he's playing around with different genres. Wan had already been set to direct the premiere episode, but he ended up dropping out due to his busy schedule. It looks like he managed to squeeze in some time!

According to Variety, "Since the show was picked up to series, CBS decided to scrap the original pilot and shoot a new premiere episode, retaining Lucas Till and George Eads from the original pilot but otherwise adding an entirely new cast."

Wan is also a producer on the series, and he obviously wants to make sure he and the network deliver a top quality show. That original pilot episode must have sucked. There's no doubt that Wan is going to deliver something awesome. Hopefully, the other directors that are hired to direct the following episodes of the series are able to keep the series quality to the standard set by Wan.

You can watch the trailer for the first version of the first episode below. It doesn't look very good, so it's good that Wan is coming in to make it better.

Review: RAIDERS! THE STORY OF THE GREATEST FAN FILM EVER MADE

$

You've probably heard the story by now: Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark comes out in 1981 and blows everyone's minds, but three Mississippi kids' minds are arguably blown more than anyone else's. Against all odds, and without the internet or even a VHS copy of the movie to assist them, they set out to complete a shot for shot remake of the movie to be filmed in their houses, backyards, and surrounding town. For the next seven years, they work tirelessly through every summer vacation and spring break to finish this thing, sacrificing any semblance of a "normal" childhood in the quest to achieve their ultimate goal. An astonishing seven years later, they finally wrap production, and fifteen years after that, their movie becomes a sensation among hardcore film fans. So...what next?

Well, if you're Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala — the two masterminds behind "the greatest fan film ever made" — what's next is to finish the movie for real, and that means completing the one scene they could never crack as kids: the scene in which the Nazi plane explodes on the tarmac. The new documentary Raiders! The Story of The Greatest Fan Film Ever Made traces the history of their original fan film and incorporates a bunch of entertaining behind-the-scenes footage from that production, but I was already familiar with most of that because I read about this Raiders adaptation years ago and have been following the story for a long time.

Thankfully, the inclusion of the guys trying to complete the airplane sequence adds a layer of thematic significance to the movie that would be absent otherwise. The documentary is no longer merely a visual scrapbook — now it's actually about something. It's an examination of obsession, and we watch to see to what lengths these men will go in order to finish what they began more than thirty years prior. (There's also an interesting through line about how divorce ripped their families apart, and how they found solace and a male father figure in Raiders and the character of Indiana Jones.) The stakes are admittedly fairly low in the grand scheme of things, but that's where the old footage comes in handy; seeing them swing from vines and nearly burn down their parents' houses, we're instantly transported back to our own childhoods, imagining how fun it would be to be doing what they're doing, and we root for them to pull off the impossible.

I won't spoil what happens, but things take some turns I didn't see coming. Even if you think you already know all of the ins and outs of the story, Raiders! is still worth checking out.

Trailer for the Western Revenge Thriller OUTLAWS AND ANGELS

The first trailer has been released for a western called Outlaws and Angels. It's always exciting to see a new western get released, and this is one that I heard some great things about. It premiered at Sundance earlier this year, which is where I was hearing the buzz for it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see it, but my chance is coming this summer!

If I hadn't already heard such great things about this movie, I'd probably pass on it because this trailer doesn't do a very good job selling the movie. It's a poorly edited trailer that has a cheap feel to it. Don't let that turn you off, though, because I've been told that it's worth checking out.

The movie was written and directed by JT Mollner and it has a solid cast that includes Chad Michael Murray, Luke Wilson, Teri Polo, and Francesca Eastwood. Here's the synopsis:

When Outlaws on the lam invade the home of an unsuspecting, seemingly innocent, frontier family to hide out for the night, an unexpected game of cat and mouse ensues, leading to seduction, role reversal, and ultimately, bloody revenge.

Outlaws and Angels is set to hit theaters and VOD on July 15th.

If you're a fan of animation, I've got a wonderfully animated short film for you to watch called "Au Lapin Agile." The story is set in 1910 in Montmartre, and it centers on a bar fight that breaks out between artists. As they fight, the colorful art explodes around the bar. The short is only about a minute long and was created by the students of Gobelins School of the Image. Enjoy the fight!

Whacked Out Trailer for the Psychokinetic Horror Film THE MIND'S EYE

Holy freakin' awesome! Seriously, you've got to watch this trailer for a crazy looking psychokinetic horror thriller called The Mind's Eye. The movie comes from director Joe Begos, and it has an awesome retro vibe that pays tribute to the early films of David Cronenberg and Brian De Palma.

No joke, this flick looks like a legit badass movie that's going to be a blast to watch. The story centers on two characters with psychokinetic capabilities who are being hunted down by a doctor who is looking to harvest their powers. The official poster of the film says it's "the best Scanners sequel we never got." If that's not enough to get you to want to watch this movie, then watch the trailer! It should do the trick. But first, here's the synopsis:

Zack Connors and Rachel Meadows were born with incredible psychokinetic capabilities. When word of their supernatural talents gets out, they find themselves the prisoners of Michael Slovak, a deranged doctor intent on harvesting their powers. After a daring escape, they are free from his sinister institution, but the corrupt doctor will stop at nothing to track them down so that he may continue to siphon their gifts for his own use. The Mind’s Eye is “a mind-bogglingly gory film that has heart, soul, and suspense, but is above all, unbelievably fun to watch.” (Modern Horrors)

The movie stars Graham Skipper as Zack Connors and Lauren Ashley Carter as Rachel Meadows. The Mind's Eye will be released in theaters on August 5th, 2016.

That's a wrap for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! Director James Gunn posted a wrap video that he streamed live on Facebook yesterday in which he and Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt give heartfelt speeches to the crew of the film and praised them for how much they all kicked ass during the production. In case you missed it, you can watch it below. Gunn also posted this tweet announcing the film has completed shooting.

Gunn has been posting a lot of cool stuff from the film on social media, and if you follow him on Facebook, you know he loves to live stream from time to time to answer fan questions.

The video even confirms that they would be taking the film to San Diego Comic-Con with the cast and that they will be showing off some footage of the film for the fans, which is something we already knew was going to happen. I can't wait to get a glimpse of what's in store for us!

The movie also stars Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Kurt Russell, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel. It's scheduled to be released on May 5th, 2017.

Return to Sunnydale to defend it from vampires in an upcoming new board game based on Buffy the Vampire SlayerJasco Games has teamed up with Lynnvander Studios to develop the game, which is called Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Board Game. They've hired Thomas M. Gofton (Albion’s Legacy, Deep 5) to design it.

The cooperative board game has players take the role of Buffy and her friends as they defend the town of Sunnydale from an onslaught of vampires and demons. There is also the goal of unraveling the plot of the real Big Bad, who is scheming to open the Hellmouth. Players must work together using all their resources, including character’s special abilities, to help the defenseless residents of Sunnydale.

1 to 6 players can play the game, and it only lasts for a 40 to 60 minutes, which is about as much time as I can handle for a board game. I assume some of the characters used in the game could include Willow, Xander, Giles, Tara, Cordelia, Faith, Angel, Oz, or others.

As cool as this is for the fans, I'd much rather see an awesome open world video game bring these characters back to life.

The board game will be released on October 28th and will run for about $39.99.

Margot Robbie Talks About Harley Quinn's Tattoos in SUICIDE SQUAD

Yesterday Suicide Squad director David Ayer talked about Jared Leto's Joker tattoos and revealed the meaning behind them. He said that the tells a story, a story that is "absolutely canon."

Now today, we have a new interview with Margot Robbie in which she discusses Harley Quinn's tattoos and their origins in the story. The actress explains:

"She did these herself in prison. They're stick and poke tattoos, prison-style tattoos, that you do when you don't have a tattoo gun. She did them herself out of boredom and desperation. There's 'I heart Puddin', a Joker face, a love heart, that's obviously reflective of her time in prison."

Ayer went on to talk about working with Robbie and praised her performance as Harley saying:

“I don’t know what to say other than a star is born. She’s riveting, magnetic, she is the character. I don’t recognize her out of make-up, we spend so much time together on set, I’m uncomfortable around her if she’s not in make-up.”

He also says that Harley Quinn is one of the main reasons that he wanted to make the movie and explains what he loves about her, saying:

“Harley’s one of my favourite characters. She’s one of the reasons I wanted to do this project. She’s so complex, she’s all about dichotomies, so many opposing qualities in the same person, just like all of us. It’s nice to explore those things. It’s rare to have such a strong female character who’s so active in the story, so driven and so powerful - yet has these weaknesses and achilles heels, just like anybody.”

Harley Quinn has been a favorite character of mine ever since she was introduced in Batman: The Animated Series, and it's exciting to finally see her come to life like this in Suicide Squad, which opens in theaters on August 5th.

DAREDEVIL Star Charlie Cox Auditioned for Han Solo and He Explains What Went Wrong

Before Alden Ehrenreich was cast in the role of Han Solo in the standalone film currently being developed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Disney and Lucasfilm were auditioning pretty much every young actor in Hollywood. Daredevil star Charlie Cox auditioned, but he didn't do very well in his audition because of his time playing a blind superhero. During an interview with THR, the actor explained how his audition went wrong:

“It’s been really fun to look people in the eye. I had gone to an audition — one of those things that are super secretive and they don’t tell you, but I’m pretty sure it was for the Han Solo reboot— and halfway through it, the casting director stopped me and said, ‘Why aren’t you looking at me?’ I realized I had gotten into a habit of not making eye contact, because the only thing I had done for two years is play someone who is blind. I never got invited back, probably because they couldn’t figure out why I was acting like a complete idiot.”

Yeah, that would have been weird. Cox is a solid actor so hopefully he can kick that habit so he can land new movie and TV roles when he's finished with Daredevil. Chances are he'll be playing Daredevil for a long time.

I don't think Cox would have been a right fit for Han Solo anyway. Ehrenreich is going to be great in the role, and it will be fun to see how he makes the characters his own.

Lady Gaga Could Star in Bradley Cooper's A STAR IS BORN

A remake of the 1937 film A Star is Born has been in development since 2011. Clint Eastwood and Beyonce were originally attached to the project. Over the years it has obviously gone through several changes.

Bradley Cooper is now set to direct and star in the film, and according to THR, Lady Gaga is in talks to take on the lead role. If she lands the part this will be her first starring role in a feature film.

The film has already been remade twice — in 1954 and in 1976. The story "centers on a movie star who helps an aspiring young actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral."

Gaga has emerged as a very talented actress who really impressed in American Horror Story: Hotel.  She's also previously appeared in films such as Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Machete Kills, and Muppets Most Wanted. Those were smaller type roles, though.

According to the report, Gaga auditioned for the Warner Bros. film and impressed the executives. This seems like a perfect project for the actress so it would be cool if she actually landed the role. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

WICKED Movie Conjures a 2019 Release Date

$

Hollywood has been attempting to bring the smash Broadway hit Wicked to the big screen as a movie for at least the past six years, and now it finally has a release date. THR reports that the film adaptation will fly onto the big screen on December 20, 2019, which is the perfect spot for a family-friendly movie that should clean up at the box office.

For those of you who don't know, Wicked is an origin story for The Wizard of Oz's Wicked Witch of The West, and a retelling of the classic story from the witch's point of view. It artfully references the events of the main story that are well-known to fans while crafting a whole new narrative that makes you examine the entire thing from a new perspective. It's a great piece of work.

Writer Winnie Holzman and composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who both worked on the Broadway show, are reuniting for this production, and though people like J.J. Abrams and Rob Marshall flirted with the directing gig over the years, Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) ultimately ended up snagging that position.

Producer Marc Platt, who once said the goal was to have the musical adaptation in theaters by 2016, has taken his time making sure the script is right before they jump into production. He knows that the show has a tremendous reputation (I've seen it - it lives up to the hype), and doesn't want to make something that will disappoint fans. That's admirable, especially when he could have rushed a movie into production a few years ago at the height of Wicked fever and simply cashed in on the phenomenon.

Intense Teaser Trailer For ALL EYEZ ON ME, A Biopic About Rapper Tupac Shakur

“If they kill me, I want the people to know the real story.”

The first trailer has been released for the upcoming Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me. The film's story will focus on the career of Tupac and take us on a journey all the way to the fatal drive-by shooting that occurred in Las Vegas in 1996.

The trailer offers us an intense look at the film and we get our first look at newcomer Demetrius Shipp, Jr. as Tupac Shakur — he sure does have an uncanny resemblance to the musician. Judging from this minute-long teaser, the movie looks like it could be good. I hope it is and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

The film was directed by directed by Benny Boom and also stars Danai Gurira as Afeni Shakur, Jamal Woolard as The Notorious B.I.G., Stefon Washington as Puff Daddy, Kat Graham as Jada Pinkett, Dominic L. Santana as Suge Knight, Money-B as himself, Azad Arnaud as Daz Dillinger, Jarrett Ellis as Snoop Dogg, Harold House Moore as Dr. Dre, and more.

All Eyez on Me opens in theaters on November 11, 2016.

FRIDAY THE 13TH Producer Says New Film Is Not An Origin Story

Along with the recent news that the upcoming remake of Friday The 13th will include Jason Voorhees' dad Elias, iHorror is saying Jason's mother Pamela Voorhees will be present in the story as well. This may be confusing for some, since many know that Pamela was driven to madness due to the death of her son...so is this an origin story? It would appear the remake is not, in fact, an origin story, and is going to take things in an alternate direction. Producer Brad Fuller explains:

It’s more of an alternate world that we’re creating for Jason – an alternate space, alternate reality – in this film. Yes, Pamela and Jason are together in this film, but this is the same Jason we all know and love. He’s Jason; he kills – he kills teenagers. We went down the origin route with the second Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, and I think when you go to deep into a character’s origin, the character stops being scary at some point. I’m not worried about demystifying Jason by revealing parts of his back story, which most of the fans are familiar with.

Well, now I'm a bit confused at what we will see. Maybe we see a world where he reveals he's alive prior to her going on a rampage? Who knows!

What I do know is that this series is in desperate need of a remake, so I'm not at all opposed to it. What's the scenario you would most like to see?
