Thanks to China, Duncan Jones Will Probably Get to Make WARCRAFT 2

Duncan JonesWarcraft may not have been a hit in the U.S. as it only made $24.4 so far. American audiences don’t seem to be digging the fantasy adventure film, and reviews have not been kind. I personally enjoyed the hell out of it, and I loved what Jones did with the adaptation. Maybe American audiences just weren’t ready for this kind of heavy fantasy film. Maybe it was the way the film was marketed. I don’t really know, but China was sure ready for it!

Warcraft made $156 million in five days in China. That’s an insanely impressive number, and it’s awesome to see that there is an audience out there that does appreciate the work that Jones, his team, and Blizzard put into creating this feature film adaptation of WoW. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that a huge number of World of Warcraft’s active subscriber base is in China.

These numbers make Warcraft the largest foreign film debut in China’s history. That means it made more than films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Batman v Superman. This is cause for celebration for anyone would enjoyed the movie! The total box office number being reported worldwide currently stands at $304.6 million.

Jones and Blizzard had already planned out a trilogy, and the end of the first film certainly leaves it open for the story to continue. I was really hoping that we would get to see this vision fully realized, and now thanks to China, there’s a good chance that Jones will get to continue the story he started with the first film. When previously talking about where the trilogy was headed Jones said:

“You don’t make films this big and not hope that you’re going to get the chance to make maybe one or two more. I know Chris Metzen, who works at Blizzard and myself have talked about, if we have the chance to make a trilogy, what would story be? And what we set up in this film, I think, I don’t think I’m spoiling anything by saying… The Orcs had a home, they lost their home. Duratan, who’s chieftain of the Frost Worlds has tried to bring his people somewhere to give them a new home. At the end of this movie they don’t quite have that new home yet. I would hope by the end of the trilogy we know where the Orcs are going to live.”

As the box office numbers continue to grow over the coming months, a sequel seems like it’s inevitable, but we’ll just have to wait and see. I’m excited about the possibility of seeing how the full story plays out with these characters. Are you happy to hear that Warcraft is turning out to be a success?

See Spidey's New Look in Trailer for PS4's Upcoming SPIDER-MAN Game - E3 2016

"People see me and think they're safer, but it's not really me they're seeing. Probably for the best, knowing everything hinges on a guy from Queens sounds as scary as it feels."

PlayStation has unveiled a pretty cool trailer for a new Spider-Man video game coming to the PS4 and as you can see, Spidey is getting a whole new look! The game comes from the teams of Marvel and Insomniac Games, who were looking to create a "brand-new, authentic Spider-Man story."

There aren't a lot of details on the game yet, but it's explained that it features an "experienced Peter Parker who is more masterful at fighting crime." So it seems like this game is going to skip the whole origin thing as well, and I don't think fans of the character are going to complain about that.

The new costume that Spider-Man is sporting is interesting. A part of me likes it and a part of doesn't. With the whole red, white, and blue color scheme, he's definitely got more or a patriotic look. I'm sure there are cosplayers out there who are already making their costumes!

Check out the trailer and tell us what you think of Spidey's new look!

First Trailer for Rob Zombie's Carnage-Filled Carnival Film 31

If you're a fan of Rob Zombie's movies, then you'll probably enjoy his latest movie 31. It's pretty much the same thing we've seen him do over and over again. I watched the film at Sundance earlier this year, and I wasn't a big fan. I was hoping he'd do something different and unique with it, but it's just Sheri Moon Zombie and some friends trying to survive a bunch of maniacs who are out to kill them. You can read my review of it here. There were aspects of it that I did like, but ultimately it was a letdown. Two things that the movie doesn't lack, though, is blood and guts. Here's the synopsis:

From the visionary mind of the man who brought us House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween comes the horrific story of five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large compound. At the mercy of their captors, they are forced to play a twisted game or life or death called 31. For the next 12 hours they must fight for their lives against an endless parade of homicidal maniacs.

The movie also stars Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeff Daniel Phillips, and Meg Foster. 31 is set to open in theaters on September 16th.

Disney's PETE'S DRAGON Remake Takes Flight in New Trailer and Poster

Disney has unveiled a new trailer and poster for the studio's Pete's Dragon remake, which stars Oakes Fegley, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley, Robert Redford, and Karl Urban. While the atmospheric first trailer teased a mysterious tone for the film, this new trailer shows off a ton of new footage and gives us a much better idea of what to expect when the movie hits theaters in a couple of months.

Last week, Disney invited me to check out some early footage from the movie with Howard and director David Lowery in attendance, and during his presentation, Lowery showed us this trailer and spoke very highly of it:

"When you’re making a movie and watching it over and over and over again, you kind of forget that it’s a movie sometimes. You always know that’s what you’re making, but you’re so focused on the details and you’re just trying to get every little piece to fit right and you kind of lose sight of the big picture sometimes. When I saw this trailer that the folks at Disney put together, I was reminded, ‘Oh yeah — we made a movie! This is awesome!’ I’m so thrilled for this trailer to be out in the world, and the movie too, but this trailer is a perfect set-up for what people are going to get to experience later this summer."

Keep an eye out for my in-depth piece on the film in just a few minutes, and in the meantime, check out the new trailer below. Pete's Dragon hits theaters on August 12, 2016.

6 Things To Know About Disney's PETE'S DRAGON Remake

“I look back at childhood as an adventure,” director David Lowery says. In his latest film, what he calls “a Pete’s Dragon for a new generation,” he’s aiming to recapture that sense of wonder for audiences who may not have ever seen the 1977 movie. Last week, Disney invited me to the studio’s El Capitan Theatre in the heart of Hollywood to check out an early presentation of the new remake, including a look at some new footage and a conversation with Lowery and star Bryce Dallas Howard.

The director showed us a few quick scenes from the film that gave us a wide sample of the kinds of things he does in the film, from establishing the character of Howard’s pragmatic forest ranger and her more precocious father (an old storyteller, played by Robert Redford with a twinkle in his eye); to a big truck chase sequence teased in the trailers; to joyous scenes of Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his dragon Elliot playing, soaring through the sky, and hanging out together in the woods. The visuals look outstanding — the dragon riding is miles ahead of what we’ve seen from Dany on Game of Thrones so far — and there’s also a soulful tone here that should be an interesting break from the bombast of typical summer movie fare.

Read on for six things we learned about the new movie that you should know before you see it.

Bryce Dallas Howard Wanted This Job Because It Wasn’t A Straight-Up Remake

Howard, coming off Jurassic World in which she also starred opposite some large CG lizard creatures, said she actively chased this role as soon as she found out Lowery’s take on the material.

“Before I read the script, I had heard it was not a straight-up remake, and that was [why I said yes]. Because I love [the original] Pete’s Dragon — I have the little board book for my kids and I read it to them constantly — and with me loving it, I didn’t want it to just be a copycat. We’ve seen a lot of those, some of them are great, some of them don’t work, but I felt like the story and the themes within the original film was what the charm of that movie was…I think what has centered that film and what has made that film last was the central idea of friendship with an imaginary friend when you have no family. And then, voila, it’s not such an imaginary friend. So when I heard it wasn’t a straight-up remake, I was like, ‘yes, I’d love to be a part of that.’ Also, I can’t help it — I’m a parent and I want there to be beautiful films out there that have innocence, are timeless, and have really beautiful values without being didactic.”

The Setting Was Key For The Film’s Success

Lowery, who co-wrote the script with Toby Halbrooks, talked about how the idea of setting the movie in modern day never appealed to him. He’s always aiming for a timeless feel in his films, and it seemed like he found an excellent way to achieve that:

“The movie is set somewhere vaguely in the Pacific Northwest. We never quite say where it is, we never quite say when it is. Sometime vaguely in the past. If any of you have seen my other movies, you know I really love to do the whole ‘timeless’ thing, and this movie definitely plays into that.
I feel when you have a movie that has a fantastical concept in it, you can accept it more easily if it has the veil of time being over it. To set something in the past, you’re a little more accepting of the idea that there might be magic there that you might have overlooked in your own past. I also find that the movies I return to and the ones I love the most — there are films about a specific time and place, if you want to see a historical epic, great, I’m glad they’re so specific — but there are other films that endure because they don’t root themselves in a specific time and they don’t say ‘this is a film about here and now.’
I didn’t want this film to feel contemporary, because I felt if it was contemporary, if someone pulls out an iPhone, all of a sudden you’re like, ‘OK, that’s an iPhone 4. This was made in 2010.’ And then you put that against a dragon and you kind of get this weird disparity that doesn’t quite work. So by setting it in the past and not making a big deal out of it — we never put a title card that says this is what year it is. That was part of the look of the film, the production design that we did. You pull some cars from the early ‘80s, pull some cars from the ’70s, kind of make everything congeal into this cohesive whole that doesn’t have a literal date on it but feels just yesterday.”

The era wasn’t the only important factor — finding the perfect place to shoot their forest sequences was a big deal. Turns out New Zealand had exactly what the production was looking for. Lowery explained:

“I just like things to be real, that’s just me, I’m always going to gravitate toward that. So when we were planning this, I was like, ‘Look, if we’re going to have a CG dragon, let’s make everything else real and use as little green screen as possible.’ So we went to New Zealand because it’s set in a slightly elevated, more magical version of the Pacific Northwest, and New Zealand has plenty of magic, had the forest we needed, had the weather we needed, and Weta Digital was there, which was very convenient.”

They’d go as far as to drive two hours into secluded forest every day to truly capture “the best version of being out in the woods.” It certainly shows; the footage we saw had a quiet, ethereal feel to being outside, and it truly did feel like we were seeing a place that hadn’t ever been inhabited by humanity.

The Dragon Had To Be Furry

Lowery spoke about how important it was to treat Elliot as a legitimate character, one who can emote and isn’t just a CG beast lumbering through the woods. The dragon is one half of the film’s most important relationship, so he had to be handled carefully in the design stage, and avoiding scaly dragons like the ones on Game of Thrones was a big priority for the filmmakers:

“One of the things we wanted to do with this movie was really sell the idea of friendship between a child and a creature, which really comes down to your favorite pet as a child or the relationship you have with a dog or something like that. The really close bond you have with an animal. We really wanted to try to hit home the heart of that, but with a creature that’s twenty times the size of a normal household pet…Even though he is a dragon — a magical creature that can turn invisible — we really wanted to treat him like a character, and really let that character come through.
The very first hook I had when I met the producers of this film, we didn’t even have a pitch yet, but I was like, ‘I want the dragon to be furry.’ And that’s because I love my cats and I was probably petting my cat and saying, ‘I wish this guy was twenty feet tall’ or something. (laughs) They really are based on my cats. They have their own Instagram account if anyone wants to follow them. They’re 2orangeguys on Instagram. I was like, ‘Look, if you put a Game of Thrones dragon in this, he’s going to be scaly, kind of cold, he’ll be cool, but I want this to be the kind of dragon you really want to give a hug to and that I want to give a hug to and snuggle up with.’ There’s no reason dragons can’t be furry. I went through the design process of figuring out what design choices would break the idea of being a dragon. There are certain things we found we can’t do. When we tried to do different things with the wings, it started to feel like a chimera, or other various mythical beasts. A sphinx, sometimes. But if you kept the wings, kept the tail, kept the ridges on the back, you can kind of have fun with the rest of the design and it still feels like a dragon. The fur was an integral part to the design for me. That made the character.”

Lowery Used an Unorthodox Method to Confirm He Had The Perfect Pete

When it came to finding the right Pete, Lowery knew he wanted a child actor that didn’t have the polish of an actor you might find on stage or on a Disney Channel show. “I wanted someone who was a little unvarnished and not perfect, who didn’t have that sort of trained quality,” he said. “I often find that if a ten-year-old can cry on cue, that is an amazing skill that I am envious of, but usually that’s not what I’m looking for.” His casting director did a worldwide casting search, and when Oakes Fegley walked in the room, Lowery knew he’d found his star. But he cemented that decision in an unusual way: he asked Oakes to build something with the chairs in the room, and he just sat back and watched. If Lowery and Howard’s stories about the young actor are accurate, Oakes sounds like a totally relaxed, normal kid, not at all pretentious or corrupted by weird stage parents, so when he started stacking a trash can on top of some chairs and Lowery could see him working things out and adjusting little details, he knew for sure he’d found his Pete. “He had a sensitivity, but also a resilience where you believe he could survive in the conditions his character has survived in,” Lowery said. “He’s really tough and scrappy, but also so quiet and sensitive, the perfect balance.”

Lowery Was Heavily Influenced By Foreign Films

Movies that are about children can often talk down to them or even have disdain for them, but Lowery took a lot of inspiration from foreign films about how to make sure the movie treated kids with respect and talked to them as equals:

“There is a great legacy of films about children, whether they are films like E.T., The NeverEnding Story, The Black Stallion, or other films like Ponette, the French film about the girl who lost her parents is really important to me. The Red Balloon is a wonderful story capturing the imagination of childhood in a very specific way. I could list off all the foreign films that I love that do a good job of that, but I think it’s important to think of those movies because I know a lot of teachers who show The Red Balloon in their classes to kindergartners because it’s the kind of thing kids respond to. Same with Miyazaki stuff, which I think is important to show kids. Obviously there’s a ton of great entertainment for children, but I love things that let kids see the emotional side of themselves.”

You Won’t See (or Hear) References To The Original Film

When asked whether we’d hear an homage to the music of the ’77 film, Lowery gave perhaps the most refreshing answer of the day:

“No. We do have a song in the movie and you’ll find out how it plays into the plot when you see it, but we don’t [have any homages to the first movie]. I really wanted to sort of avoid the winks and the nods, not because the original is not great, but because I wanted this to really exist in its own realm. The best thing is for audiences who love the original to see this and say, ‘This is a great new film about a boy named Pete, and Elliot.’ And if kids haven’t seen the original, this will be the first time they’ve seen it. And there won’t be that moment where all of the adults go, ‘Oh, yeah,’ and the kids look over and go, ‘What? I don’t get it. What is it?’ So we avoided that. We talked about it, we talked about having references, but ultimately felt it was the purer tactic. I’ve seen a lot of remakes that do that and it always takes me out of a movie because it’s a little wink.”

As someone who thinks references like that can be distracting and often obnoxious, I find it incredibly promising that Lowery has the confidence in his movie to try to have it stand on its own as much as possible. Even with seeing the extra footage we saw, it’s still tough to tell whether this movie is going to be a new classic, a whiffed remake attempt, or somewhere in between, but at least it won’t be a deep dive into nostalgia for another film. (Nostalgia for childhood? Yes. For another movie? No.)

In any case, Lowery’s enthusiasm is certainly evident, and regardless of how the film turns out, his heart is clearly in the right place here. His vision for the film sounds great, so I’m hoping he’s able to translate that vision to audiences in an enjoyable way. “I want you to get a sense of the scope and action and fun and adventure this movie has,” he beamed before showing off a new clip, “because ultimately it really is an adventure.” The adventure begins when Pete’s Dragon flies into theaters on August 12, 2016.

I've got an awesome series of fan art for you to check out today that imagines the Game of Thrones houses as Pokemon. The illustrations were created by artist Kaleb Raleigh, and each character comes with their evolved form. He also went ahead and created Pokemon characters representing the Night’s Watch and the White Walkers. I don't know about you, but I'm thinking these should be added to the official Pokemon roster of characters.

BEN-HUR Trailer and Chariot Featurette Highlight The Remake's Practical Stunts

$

Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer and featurette for the studio's remake of the Biblical epic Ben-Hur, directed by Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov. I'm still baffled as to who thinks one of the most classic movies ever made (the '59 version won eleven Oscars) needs a gritty modern remake, but here we are anyway. The trailer is...well, you'll have to watch it and see, and the featurette concentrates on the updated take on the iconic chariot race from the first movie and how practical the stunts are. I'm sure they put a lot of hard work into it, but does that justify this movie's existence?

Ben-Hur hits theaters on August 19, 2016.

Two New TV Spots For SUICIDE SQUAD

I don't normally write about TV spots for movies, but it's a super slow news day so far, so screw it. Warner Bros. has released two new TV spots for its upcoming supervillain team-up film Suicide Squad, which has been incredibly highly-anticipated ever since it was initially announced. Excitement has been building steadily as we approach the movie's August 5, 2016 release date, and I think everyone is hoping this ends up being a better film than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (even those that like BvS have to admit it's far from a perfect movie, so hopes are high for this one). Let us know what you think of these TV spots below.

Donald Glover Swings Into SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Tom Holland was terrific in his MCU debut as the new Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, and I'm really looking forward to seeing him in his own movie when Spider-Man: Homecoming rolls around. But a few years ago, I was all about seeing multi-hyphenate Donald Glover suit up as Spider-Man. There was a homegrown campaign floating around the web to have Glover play Miles Morales in a live action movie, but Sony ended up going in a different direction. Glover did eventually voice Morales in an animated series, but it looked as if his dream of playing Spidey was over.

Now Deadline reports that Glover has joined the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming, but they aren't sure which role he'll play. Since we know Homecoming involves Spidey in high school, it seems like he might be a little too old to be Miles Morales or even one of Parker's classmates. I wonder if this is going to be a legitimate supporting role with real screen time, or if it's nothing more than a cameo that will serve as a nod to fans who know about his involvement and interest in the franchise over the past few years.

A couple of weeks ago, word came out that Morales might appear in Phil Lord and Chris Miller's animated Spider-Man movie, and I speculated that they might call Glover to provide a voice in that film. I suppose that could still happen, but if not, at least he's getting some screen time in a live-action Spider-Man movie. That's gotta be a cool feeling after being passed over for the title role years ago. Who do you think Glover should play in the film?

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Holland, Glover, Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Michael KeatonTony Revolori, Zendaya, and Kenneth Choi, and arrives on July 7, 2017. Glover's new FX series Atlanta debuts in September.

Larry David Returning For Ninth Season of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM on HBO

Despite being an avid Seinfeld fan, I've somehow never found time to check out Larry David's HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, which has its own rabid fanbase and has become a legendary show in its own right. Just a few days ago, actor JB Smoove teased a possible return for the show (one that's been hinted at for a while now), and now it's been confirmed: David is coming back for a ninth season on HBO.

“We’re thrilled that Larry has decided to do a new season of CURB and can’t wait to see what he has planned,” said [Casey] Bloys.
Asked why he decided to come back, David said, “In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned.’”

I wonder if this timing has anything to do with Bloys, who was previously in charge of HBO comedies, becoming the new head of programming at the network. In any case, fans can rejoice at the idea of more episodes being produced, and while a release date hasn't been announced yet, now seems like a good time for me (and anyone else who hasn't yet seen the show) to try to catch up.

Winona Ryder Gives Another Update About BEETLEJUICE 2

$

Beetlejuice 2 is probably one of the most on-again, off-again movie projects of the past few years (right up there alongside Ghostbusters 3), so I shouldn't have been surprised earlier this year when director Tim Burton said the movie was ready to start filming and then almost immediately said the film actually wasn't in development at all. Since then, the director has said that the script "has to be right" for him to get the gang back together for a sequel, and now we have another update from one of the film's potential stars.

Collider spoke with Winona Ryder about the status of Beetlejuice 2, and it doesn't sound great:

“I don’t really know what’s going on with that. Obviously, it was an iconic film. The only way it could really ever be done is with Tim [Burton] and Michael [Keaton]. I don’t know. There’s something that really resonates with all ages, with that film. It’s interesting. I think it would be great if it happened, if it was the right circumstances. Gosh, you know you’re getting older when they’re making TV shows, sequels or plays for things that you did. It’s very flattering and very humbling, indeed. I heard they were making another Little Women. Mine was the fifth one, so that’s kudos to Louisa May Alcott. It’s just very flattering.”

So it sounds like no one knows what the hell is going on with the movie at this stage. But just the simple fact that she doesn't know what's up tells us that Beetlejuice 2 is still far from a sure thing, and still may never happen at all. Personally, I think they should give up, move on, and leave the original to stand on its own, but that's just me. What do you think?

Jeff Daniels and a GAME OF THRONES Alum Confirmed For Netflix Western Series GODLESS

I'm very excited to see the upcoming Netflix western show Godless, which hails from exec producer Steven Soderbergh and producer/writer/director Scott Frank (Out of Sight, Minority Report, The Wolverine, The Lookout) and now THR has some confirmation of new cast members for us.

Jeff Daniels has been confirmed to play the show's villain, an outlaw named Frank Griffin who's ravaging the west as he and his gang hunt down his protege-turned-nemesis Roy Goode (Jack O'Connell from Unbroken). Roy takes shelter at a ranch outside of La Belle, New Mexico, a town made up exclusively of women after all of the men died in a mining accident. Daniels was recently rumored alongside Scoot McNairy, but the latter hasn't been confirmed for a role (yet).

There are a few other casting bits, too. Merritt Wever ([pictured] Nurse Jackie, The Walking Dead) will play Mary Agnes, the "brash widow" of the town's late mayor, while Game of Thrones alum Thomas Brodie-Sangster ([pictured] who played greenseer Jojen Reed) will play Whitey Winn, the town deputy: "Devoted to both books and the sheriff and afraid of no one, but still a boy more than a man, he has a lot to learn." Jeremy Bobb (The Knick) rounds out this batch of casting as A.T. Grigg, "the editor of the Santa Fe Dailey Review who has been obsessed for years with writing about the Griffin Gang."

After seeing Daniels as principled news anchor Will McAvoy on The Newsroom, I'm looking forward to watching him terrorize the Old West in this show.

Looking for a geeky way to dress up that tuxedo T-shirt? Nixon recently made five new watches that directly pull design elements from the Star Wars universe. At price points between $150 and $350 these are not cheap, but when it comes to watches you mostly get what you pay for. In the past, Nixon created a $30,000 watch that looks like Darth Vader's TIE Advanced x1. So these watches are a lot more affordable.

Roland Emmerich Describes Early Version of INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequel and Teases a Third Movie

$

0

Director Roland Emmerich is returning to the world of Independence Day twenty years after the original blew up the box office (and the White House) back in 1996, but what we'll see in Independence Day: Resurgence wasn't Emmerich's first thought for the movie. In a new interview with Empire, he explains an earlier version of what this film could have been:

"It was after 9/11 and [co-writer] Dean [Devlin] and I wanted to make the movie about peace, and it just didn't work. There's still an element of that in the new one, but that version was only about that. We shoot aliens down accidentally and then at the end of the movie they land on the White House lawn and say "we come in peace" and that was it. It was just too weak an idea and we didn't really want to do it. It didn't have an Independence Day feel. Only the alien ship was destroyed!"

Well, he's definitely right about one thing: that doesn't have an Independence Day vibe to it. While I'm not sure how the real movie is going to turn out (I don't have high hopes for it being great), I'm hoping it's a little better than that early idea. As for why he waited 20 years to make the sequel, he said:

"I'd never planned to make a sequel – I always felt thatIndependence Day was a standalone film. But over the years I realised how iconic the film had become for people and I was repeatedly asked by [20th Century] Fox to do it. What really did it was just how amazing film technology is these days and how restricted I felt in '95/'96 when I did the original one. But it's not a traditional sequel."

And finally, he was asked if there would be an Independence Day 3, and Emmerich teased that as a possibility:

"If it's successful enough, yes, because it's set up for a sequel. In 20 years? No, I wouldn't want to make it with a [walker]!"

Independence Day: Resurgence blasts into theaters on June 24, 2016.
