THE ONE I LOVE Director's Sci-Fi Film THE DISCOVERY Lands at Netflix

0
0

It's been about seven months since we've heard anything about The Discovery, the new sci-fi movie from The One I Love director Charlie McDowell, so I admit I'd forgotten all about it. But now Deadline has a quick new update about the movie, including a casting change and a plan for the film's release.

Before we get to any of that, here's the synopsis: "Directed by Charlie McDowell and written by McDowell and Justin LaderThe Discovery is a sci-fi story set two years after the discovery of a scientifically proven afterlife where millions of people have taken their own lives in order to start over." Robert Redford plays the man who makes the discovery, and Jason Segel is replacing Nicholas Hoult as Redford's character's son, who falls for a woman (Rooney Mara) whose past is tinged with tragedy.

The movie will premiere on Netflix in 2017, and the streaming service will also give it a limited theatrical release at that time.

“To describe the story as original doesn’t begin to capture the world that Charlie has created that will envelop you,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “Our global viewers are going to love this film.”

McDowell has directed a few episodes of HBO's hilarious series Silicon Valley, but to really get a sense of what he's capable of as a director, check out his excellent indie sci-fi movie The One I Love, starring Elisabeth Moss and Mark Duplass. You won't regret it.

Glowing Infinity Stone Rings Inspired by Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet

The Infinity Stones are an important part of the Marvel Universe, and as we get closer to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, they are going to become more and more important. A few of the stones have already been introduced in the MCU and with Thanos as the main villain in the Infinity War films, we know that things are going to get insane with the stones because one way or another, he’s going to end up getting them all.

For those of you who want a set of Infinity Stones for yourself, Marvel fan and Reddit user JarvisLatteier has designed an awesome set of rings that were inspired by the Infinity Stones, and they glow in the dark thanks to the radioactive isotope tritium, which is mostly safe as the Tritium’s beta particles are unable to penetrate the skin. So, as long as you don’t ingest it or inject it into your body, you’ll be fine.

So if you don’t mind a bit of radioactivity to put a little glow in your life, and you want a fun set of Infinity Stone rings, you can purchase them at Shapeways shop. I also included a video about the rings that you can watch below.

Doug Liman In Talks For CHAOS WALKING Directing Gig, But What About GAMBIT?

Lionsgate has been trying to adapt Chaos Walking, Patrick Ness's best-selling trilogy of young adult novels, into a movie for at least five years at this point, and they even had Robert Zemeckis attached to direct it for a little while. Zemeckis has since moved on, but the script was written by Oscar winner Charlie Kaufman (Anomalisa, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation), so there's some hope that this franchise will turn out better than Lionsgate's latest attempt to replicate their Hunger Games success, Divergent. Here's the synopsis:

The Carnegie Medal winning books are set in a dystopian future with humans colonizing a distant earth-like planet. When an infection called the Noise suddenly makes all thought audible, privacy vanishes in an instant. In the ensuing chaos, a corrupt autocrat threatens to take control of the human settlements and wage war with the indigenous alien race, and only young Todd Hewitt holds the key to stopping planet wide-destruction.

Now THR reports that Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman is in negotiations to direct the film, which is aiming to begin production this fall. That seems like a big problem for Gambit, the long-brewing superhero film starring Channing Tatum that Liman was supposed to direct. That project has had its own trouble finding a director, and many fans thought those troubles were over when producers brought Liman in a few months ago. But if he's supposed to be shooting Chaos Walking in the fall, there's no way he'll also be filming Gambit around that time, meaning Gambit is either going to be delayed again or looking for another director altogether. The movie was initially supposed to come out in October of this year (four months from now), but now its very existence is unclear.

Meanwhile, Liman will shoot a smaller thriller called The Wall for Amazon before production begins on Chaos Walking.

Are you still reeling from Game of Thrones' Hodor reveal earlier this season? Are you still trying to wrap your brain around the implication of Bran Stark's time travel? Then Vox has you covered with a concise video explaining the different types of time travel in fiction, which type the show uses, and how it works. Check it out if you're still scratching your head over what Bran can and can't do, and make sure to read my weekly lists of each episode's best moments (here's the one for last night's episode).

Bran's powers are based on both fiction and physics — and they have huge implications for Westeros.

TERRIERS Creators Tease a Possible Revival: "We Would Like to Make a Movie"

0

The 2010 FX series Terriers is one of my favorite shows, but it was cancelled after only one season because it was marketed terribly and couldn't attract a large enough audience to stay alive. But six years later, the show has become something of a cult hit thanks to people being able to stream it on Netflix, and at the ATX Television Festival, the creators teased a possible movie that would continue the story of down-and-out private investigator buddies Hank and Britt.

Addressing an audience from a panel on stage, Terriers creator/executive producer Ted Griffin told the crowd "We may have investigated" a reboot, and explained what he meant: “I think we would like to make a movie. And I think we have the idea sort of what we’d want to do, we just need to clear it with Fox.” Shawn Ryan, another executive producer on the series, chimed in: “There’s a couple of things we’d have to clear. Fox has the rights. This is the kind of show where I feel like if Donal [Logue] and Mikey [Michael Raymond-James] were up to it and Ted had the story he wanted to tell, this is the world we would definitely revisit, given the opportunity.”

If the rights situation can be worked out, I imagine a Netflix original movie would be the perfect way to continue this story. If only a few hundred thousand people were watching the show at its peak, it definitely doesn't make sense to make a huge Hollywood movie and put it in theaters nationwide, but a smaller budgeted direct-to-Netflix movie would be a nice way to give fans some closure and cap off the original thirteen episode run. I know I'd be thrilled to see that happen...how about you?

Other highlights from the panel:

Michael Raymond-James, who participated in the panel via Skype, joking about where his character Britt has been since the show's cliffhanger finale: "I’m Skyping you guys from some medium-security correctional facility that Britt’s been in these last six years."

Donal Logue on his experience making the show: “Michael and I talk about it all the time. It was the only job I’ve been on where I can’t really describe what it was like. I can’t distinguish myself from a character in this thing and a fan of this thing.”

The show is absolutely worth watching if you haven't seen it before. Here's one of FX's trailers, which doesn't even come close to showing the charm that the show possessed (again, the marketing was a big part of why nobody watched this show when it was on):

Watch The Premiere of Cameron Crowe's New Showtime Series ROADIES

0
0

Can writer/director Cameron Crowe bounce back from the critical disaster that was his latest film, Aloha? He's going to try with Roadies, his first original series that's set to premiere on Showtime on June 26, 2016. But we won't have to wait until then to see if he's back on track: Showtime has made the pilot episode available for everyone — even non-Showtime subscribers — to watch for free on YouTube, Facebook, and SHO.com starting right now. (Showtime subscribers can watch it on Showtime On Demand.) The only downside is that this version is a rated TV-14, and the press release seems to indicate that the "real" version that actually airs on June 26 will have a different (presumably more adult) rating. Either way, this sample should serve the purpose of seeing whether or not Crowe can handle a different medium than he's used to.

The first original series from creator, executive producer, writer and director Cameron Crowe, ROADIES is a one-hour comedy featuring an ensemble cast headed by Luke Wilson (Old School, Enlightened) and Screen Actors Guild® Award nominee Carla Gugino (San Andreas).  The series gives an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of roadies who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed along the way. ROADIES chronicles the rock world through the eyes of music’s unsung heroes and pays homage to the backstage workers who put the show on the road while touring for the successful arena-level group, The Staton-House Band.

Trailer For WHAT NOW?, Kevin Hart's Latest Concert Film

0

Love him or hate him, Kevin Hart is a big player in the comedy world right now. The guy is constantly working, appearing in thirteen films in the past four years, plus four more in 2016 alone. One of those is Kevin Hart: What Now?, a concert film that seems to have some extra narrative elements beyond just Hart's stand-up material. It almost has the feel of one of those opening vignettes they do for the MTV Movie Awards (I don't know if they still do those or not, because I haven't watched that award show in years). The movie hits theaters on October 14, 2016.

Comedic rock-star Kevin Hart (Ride Along, Get Hard, Central Intelligence) follows up his 2013 hit stand-up concert movie Let Me Explain, which grossed $32 million domestically and became the third-highest live stand-up comedy movie of all time. Hart takes center stage in this groundbreaking, record-setting, sold-out performance of “What Now?”—filmed outdoors in front of 50,000 people at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field—marking the first time a comedian has ever performed to an at-capacity football stadium.

Kevin Smith is Pushing to Direct an Episode of DAREDEVIL For Marvel

0
0

Kevin Smith recently directed a great episode of The Flash, and now he's set his sights on an episode of a different superhero series. He wants to direct an episode of Marvel's Daredevil and he's pushing to make it happen.

As you know, Smith is no stranger to the comic book world. He's a freakin' hardcore fan who has worked on several different properties over the years. One of those properties was Daredevil, and he wants back in on the action. In an interview with IGN, Smith explained:

"I feel very at home in that Flash world, so much so that I'd love to do the others. I even told [Marvel chief creative officer] Joe Quesada - we worked on 'Daredevil' together back in the day, I wrote it, he drew it - I said, 'Dude, I want to direct Daredevil, man. That'd be wild to be able to do it in real-life - let's co-direct it, that'd be cool, just like we did the book. We could co-direct an episode and then, like, take the passion from the page to the screen. I'm going to try and make that Daredevil thing happen. Every time I talk to Quesada or [Executive Vice President of Marvel Television] Jeph Loeb, I'm like, 'Hey! When are you going back down to the cameras?'"

Even though Marvel hasn't officially announced a third season of Daredevil yet, it's safe to say that it's coming. The next time we might actually see the character could be in The Defenders, which is another project that Smith would like a piece of.

"You know, they're gearing up now for The Defenders. If I can get a piece of that Defenders mini-series holy shit, could you imagine, dude? Because then you're working with multiple suits at once, that'd be phenomenal. Just doing a mini Avengers - even one episode of that run of Defenders is like, 'oh, I get to exercise any interest I had in Avengers but doing it on a scale where nobody's betting $200 million on the guy that made fuckin' Yoga Hosers."

As much as I hated Yoga Hosers, I still think Smith is a decent filmmaker that has fun with the stories he tells. He's not looking to make any comic book feature film anytime soon, though. He says that the episodic format is better suited for him. He explains:

"I don't know if a feature would be [for me]. In episodic, somebody did all the heavy lifting for you, told this backstory, and added to the characters and stuff, so you've got this rich tapestry to play with for an hour where you don't have to tell everybody an origin story, or tell everyone how this person feels about being this character. In movies, spectacle's what drives that engine, because that's what they're going to put in the trailer, that's what's going to make you leave your house to go see it. 'Holy shit! Did you see that shot of a giant wave?' I'm not that guy. I'm the guy where they've got to sell it on, 'oh, did you see that scene where they were talking to each other?' That's generally not what people are looking for in a comic book movie."

He's absolutely right and you know what? I think it would actually be great if Smith jumped on board with Marvel to direct one or two Daredevil episodes. I think he'd do some awesome things with it. Let's just see if he can campaign himself into the director's chair. What do you think of the thought of Smith working on the Daredevil series?

GAME OF THRONES Releases "Battle of The Bastards" Trailer, Teases The Largest Battle in TV History

0
0

I don't normally write about trailers for upcoming episodes of Game of Thrones, but this one's worth breaking that tradition. After a decent but not great episode last night, HBO released a trailer for next week's episode 9, entitled "The Battle of The Bastards." This is a notable episode because A) it's going to be directed by Miguel Sapochnik, the same guy who directed last year's terrific "Hardhome," and B) because the show has teased that this is going to be the biggest battle television has ever seen.

The season has been leading to a confrontation between half-siblings Jon Snow & Sansa Stark and Ramsay Bolton, and it looks like we're going to see it play out next week in the most epic way possible. I'll admit: sometimes in scenes like this, my eyes can sort of glaze over because I just become numb to the carnage taking place on screen. The showrunners are aware of this, and they took steps to make sure it doesn't happen here. A few months ago, D.B. Weiss said:

“We wondered, ‘Why don’t you see more fully fleshed-out battles in movies and TV?’ Then you get into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to actually shoot these things in a way that isn’t just helter-skelter chaos but actually gives you a sense of battle geography and the ebb and flow, and you realize why.”

And David Benioff chimed in:

“Miguel did such a fantastic job with ‘Hardhome’ we thought we should bring him back – this time with horses,” Benioff said. “Horses are not easy, at all. And certainly in terms of numbers – number of extras, number of stuntmen, number of shooting days – it’s the biggest we’ve done.”

Game of Thrones airs Sunday nights at 9pm EST on HBO.

Given His Choice, Here's Who Stephen Amell Would Play in The DC Film Universe

0
0

Stephen Amell is in one comic book show (Arrow) and one comic book movie (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows) right now, but there's always room for more. Given that Warner Bros. and DC seem pretty stringent about keeping their TV and film universes separate (at least for now...I'm guessing we'll see a multiversal crossover before all this is over), it seems pretty clear that Amell won't be able to play Green Arrow in a movie any time soon. So which other character would he play if he had the choice? CinePop asked that question during the TMNT junket, and based on his response, it seems like Amell really likes the color green:

I think all the superheroes are taken now. I’ll play The Riddler, okay? It’s a villain, but I like The Riddler.

It'd be hard to live up to Jim Carrey's completely over-the-top, bonkers version of the character from Batman Forever, but if Jared Leto can put a totally wild spin on The Joker in Suicide Squad, maybe Amell could do something similar with his take on The Riddler. Of course this will probably never actually happen, but I can already imagine someone getting hard at work creating an image of what Amell would look like with in that question mark suit. Please have that on my desk by the end of the day, internet. Thanks.

LIFE, ANIMATED Trailer Shows How Disney Movies Helped a Boy with His Autism

life-animated-trailer-shows-how-disney-movies-helped-a-boy-with-his-autism

We all have our own wonderful memories of growing up with the animated films of Disney. Our lives have all been touched by them in one way or another, but they changed the life of a boy named Owen Suskind. He was diagnosed with autism at a young age, and these Disney movies helped him cope with the autism and helped him connect with the real world that he struggled to understand.

Today we have a trailer for a documentary called Life, Animated, which tells the story of Owen who is now in his twenties and setting out on the adventure of living on his own. His story is told through video footage from his life as well as beautifully animated sequences.

This looks like an inspiring and thoughtful film that will be worth checking out. It premiered Sundance earlier this year, but I didn't get a chance to see it. I heard from several colleagues that the film was incredible, though. I can’t wait to check it out! Here are the full details for the doc:

From Academy Award® winning director Roger Ross Williams, LIFE, ANIMATED is the inspirational story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. This emotional coming-of-age story follows Owen as he graduates to adulthood and takes his first steps toward independence. The subject of his father Ron Suskind’s New York Times bestseller, Owen was a thriving three year old who suddenly and inexplicably went silent – and for years after remained unable to connect with other people or to convey his thoughts, feelings or desires.
Over time, through repeated viewings of Disney classics like THE LITTLE MERMAID and THE LION KING, Owen found useful tools to help him to understand complex social cues and to re-connect with the world around him.
LIFE, ANIMATED evocatively interweaves classic Disney sequences with verite scenes from Owen’s life in order to explore how his identification and empathy for characters like Simba, Jafar, and Ariel gave him a means to understand his feelings and allowed him to interpret reality. Beautiful, original animations offer rich insights into Owen’s fruitful dialogue with the Disney oeuvre as he imagines himself heroically facing adversity as a member in a tribe of sidekicks.
Owen’s story is a moving testament to the many ways in which stories can serve as a means of persevering through the dark times, leading us all toward the light.

Life, Animated opens on July 1st, 2016.

sideshow-collectibles-officially-reveals-27-inch-voltron-maquette

A couple of months ago Sideshow Collectibles unveiled their badass Voltron Maquette. As I understand, that was still a work in progress, but now Sideshow has officially announced the figure which stands at a whopping 27 inches tall with a 14.5 inch wing diameter.

They’ve also released some additional details like the fact that it’s made up of 106 individual polyresin, metal, and premium grade PVC pieces, and it has eyes that light.

The Voltron maquette also comes with a hefty price tag of $1,250.00! That’s way too much for my blood! But it sure does look cool.

To say that Sideshow is excited to share this piece with you is an understatement - It is our pleasure to introduce to you Sideshow’s Voltron Maquette.
Standing at a tremendous 27” tall, our Voltron Maquette is our unique interpretation of the iconic Defender of the Universe. Wrought with battle damage earned in combat while defending the galaxy, Sideshow’s Voltron will capture the imagination of fans from the 80s, and ignite the hearts of new fans to the property as well.
Constructed from polyresin, metal, and premium grade PVC, Voltron is made up of 106 individual pieces. However, lucky owners will only have to assemble 11 pieces to summon forth Voltron. The wingspan gives Voltron a diameter of 14.5”, making it the perfect centerpiece to your collection. The eyes in the main head, both the lions and the robot’s, light up and the piece can be displayed with or without the incredibly detailed sword.

James Wan Entertains the Idea of a Werewolf CONJURING Sequel

0
0

James Wan once again terrified audiences with his latest horror film The Conjuring 2. I’ve seen the movie twice already, and I’ve had a blast watching it each time. The second time I saw it there was a guy sitting next to me who pulled his hat down over his eyes during the climax of the film and started praying! It was hilarious! One of my favorite things about going to the theater to watch horror films is enjoying the reactions of the audience members.

There’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll see a third film in the franchise as Ed and Lorraine Warren have a ton of case files to choose from. One of those experiences is recounted in Ed Warren’s 1991 book, Werewolf: A True Story of Demonic Possession. There’s no word on if Warner Bros. has the rights to that story, but Wan is definitely on board to develop a movie out of it if that’s the direction that he and the studio want to take it. During an interview with CinemaBlend, Wan was asked about the idea of a using a werewolf in the sequel, and his eye’s lit up as he said:

“Maybe we can go and do it like a classic American Werewolf in London style. That would be awesome! The Warrens set against the backdrop of The Hound of Baskerville. That would be awesome. Thank you! [laughter]”

That would be pretty damn cool! Why the hell not tell that story!? If you’re not familiar with it, here’s the description from the book:

The legend of the werewolf is as old as man himself. From Ed and Lorraine Warren, the world's most famous demonologists, comes perhaps their most incredible and horrifying case: the true story of William Ramsey, whose bizarre seizures terrified the English town of Southend-on-Sea. Believing Ramsey to be a victim of demonic possession, the Warrens arranged for the rite of exorcism to be performed. Not since the exorcist shocked the nation has there been such a such a horrifying account of a supernatural battle between good and evil within the soul of one human.

This is just one of a ton of other supernatural cases that the Warrens were involved with. Wan goes on to reveal that the studio and the writers have a top 20 or 30 stories that they want to tell.

“They have a lot of cases. I'm not sitting there sifting through every single one, but I think, you know, between the writers and the studio, I think they have a short list of their favorite, like basically the top 20 or 30 of the Warren's favorite cases.”

This werewolf demon story could be one of those or not. One thing is for sure, no matter what it is, I can’t wait to see what the next film will entail.

New ASSASSIN'S CREED Movie Footage Featured in E3 Promo Video

0
0

During their press briefing at E3, Ubisoft showed off a behind-the-scenes video for the highly anticipated Assassin's Creed film. This thing is not only loaded with cool footage of Michael Fassbender and some of the stunt people pulling off some crazy awesomeness.

I love that there are going to be some insane real life stunts in this movie and that it's not going to be loaded with CG fakery. The video also features a good amount of new footage from the film and some of the cast and crew talking about the movie.

I was a little disappointed when I heard that the majority of the movie would take place in the present and not the past, but there's a talented team behind the development of the film, and I'm still excited to see what they do with the franchise.

Justin Kurrzel (Macbeth) is directing the film, and Fassbender leads the cast which also includes Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), Michael K. Williams (The Wire), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman) and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow).

Based on the Ubisoft game franchise, the Assassin’s Creed movie follows a character by the name of Callum Lynch who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed is set to be released on December 21st, 2016.

James Wan's MALIGNANT MAN to Be Directed by SAN ANDREAS Director Brad Payton

0
0

San Andreas director Brad Payton has been hired to helm a sci-fi action film being produced by James Wan called Malignant Man.

The project is set up at Fox Studios and is based on a comic book property that Wan co-created for Boom! Studios. I'm not familiar with the comic, but it definitely has an interesting premise that has the potential to be a solid film.

The story focuses on a character named Alex Gates, "a patient dying of a terminal disease who is resigned to his fate … until he discovers that his malignant tumor is actually a mysterious alien parasite. Now with some incredible powers and a renewed purpose, Gates is tasked with fighting a secret army lurking behind the veils of society while also peeling back his own secrets."

I'm curious to see how this turns out. Peyton's San Andreas was a fun movie, and I think he could do some great things with this film, especially with Wan there to help guide the project. The script for the film was already written by Zak Olkewicz.

Wan most recently directed The Conjuring 2, which came out last weekend. The director is also working on Aquaman and Robotech films for Warner Bros. As for Payton, he recently wrapped shooting on a film for Netflix called Frontier, which is set in the 18th-century world of the North American fur trade. He's also set to direct a feature film adaptation of the classic video game Rampage with Dwayne Johnson

Adorable First Footage from Pixar’s Animated Short PIPER

Pixar’s upcoming film Finding Dory will open with a charming animated short film called "Piper." I recently had the opportunity to see the short at an early screening for Finding Dory, and I absolutely adored it. I’ve enjoyed most of the short films that Pixar has made over the years, but this definitely is one of the most delightfully charming ones that they've made.

The short was directed by Alan Barillaro, and today we have a brief clip from it for you to enjoy. The story centers on a young sandpiper who is forced by his mother to start learning to take care of himself on his own. If you ever explode from cuteness, this is the movie that will light the fuse.

As you’d expect from Pixar, the animation is absolutely beautiful. You’ll get to see the full short when Finding Dory opens in theater on June 17th, 2016.
