Angelina Jolie in Talks To Board MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS Remake

Looks like the Orient Express just gained an A-list passenger.

Variety reports that Angelina Jolie is in early talks to join 20th Century Fox's remake of Murder on the Orient Express, a murder mystery based on Agatha Christie's 1934 novel of the same name.

The story follows detective Hercule Poirot as he attempts to solve the murder of an American businessman that occurred on a cross-country train. The 1974 film starred Albert Finney, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Lauren Bacall, Anthony Perkins, and many more, so it makes sense that Fox would try to bring in actors of similar star value for the remake.

Kenneth Branagh is directing and starring as Poirot, and he's currently the only actor officially confirmed for the project. Branagh, Ridley Scott, Simon Kinberg, and Mark Gordon are producing. As of right now, the film has a release date scheduled for November 22, 2017. Check out the trailer for the '74 movie below:

James Franco Stars in Powerful OBITUARIES Short Film About a Senseless School Shooting

I have a powerful short film for you to watch today called Obituaries. The movie was directed by Ryan Moody and it features James Franco. The short focuses on the senseless shooting at a school and it chronicles of the lives of those that were affected by the shooting.

Seven vignettes each focus on a victim, and give a glimpse of whom they were, whom they loved, whom they hurt, and whom they wanted to be.

It’s a thought-provoking and heartbreaking story that is an inspiring piece of work with a strong message. There are so many intense emotions the film portrays. The final scene really hit me because there’s truth to the meaning behind it.

The film features some heavy content and is NSFW as it contains violent images and some nudity, but make sure to watch it when you get a chance.

Joel Edgerton Will Protect His Family in A24's Thriller IT COMES AT NIGHT

If you consider yourself a film fan, you're probably familiar with A24. The relatively new production and distribution company is responsible for bringing us movies like Spring Breakers, The Spectacular Now, Under the Skin, Ex Machina, Room, Green Room, and The Witch, just to name a few. Now the company has its next project lined up, a thriller called It Comes at Night which will star Joel Edgerton in the lead role.

Deadline says the story centers on "a father who will stop at nothing to protect his wife and son from a malevolent, mysterious presence terrorizing them right outside their doorstep." Trey Edward Shults is writing and directing, but I missed his directorial debut Krisha, so I'm not familiar with him as a filmmaker. That plot description is also pretty vague, so I'll have to put my trust in A24 and Edgerton and hope this turns out well.

Preview of The WARCRAFT Prequel Graphic Novel — WARCRAFT: BONDS OF BROTHERHOOD

Duncan Jones' Warcraft finally hits theaters today, and it's a film you've gotta check out! I loved the movie and it's currently exploding in China. I really hope the movie does well at the box office here in the U.S.; I'm so confused by the negative reviews that the film is getting because it's such a solid movie with a great story, a great script, great acting, and stunning visual effects.

There's a prequel graphic novel that was created in conjunction with the film called Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood which takes place about 30 years before the events of the movie, it focuses on "an Azeroth-saving adventure undertaken by a young Llane, Lothar and Medivh."

We have a preview of the graphic novel to share with you today and here's the story description:

Discover how three of Azeroth’s greatest champions forged their first alliance, in the official graphic prequel to the Warcaft movie from Legendary, Universal Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment.
In a fantasy action epic set decades before the film, the young and headstrong Llane, Lothar, and Medivh embark on a mission of vengeance that will forge them into heroes… the kind of heroes Azeroth will need in its darkest hour.

Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood was written by Paul Cornell from a story by Chris Metzen and the art was done by Mat Broome, Michael O’Hare, Eddie Nunez, Roy Allan Martinez, Ale Garza, and Mike Bowden. Artist Kevin Tong did the cover art.

Kevin Smith is Bringing Back MALLRATS as a 10-Part Series

Kevin Smith is going back to basics...again! After a long dabble in the indie horror genre, it looks like the geek-acclaimed director is going to resurrect his classic Mallrats as a 10-part series! Uproxx says Smith shared how the decision came to be on the Preston and Steve show on 93.3 WMMR:

"I called my agency and I said, ‘Hey man, can I just make a Mallrats sequel? Universal owns it, but do I really need to make this with Universal? Can’t I just write a script and buy the title from them?’

And the agent told me, ‘Yeah, absolutely, they’ll let it go.’

And I said, ‘Are you positive? Because I don’t want to start this if that’s not the case.’ He says, ‘Oh yeah, there are three ways you can make this movie: You finance it yourself; you finance it with the studio, co-financed; or they finance it, but, you know, it’ll probably be, since it’s an old movie and it’s a small title, it’ll probably be you financing it yourself."
“So, while I’m in that world and space [of making Buckaroo Banzai], a couple months ago, we started reconfiguring the idea of doing Mallrats not as a film but as a series, and Universal and I are just about to close our deal to do Mallrats the series. Then we take it out into the world and find a home for it. So, instead of doing a Mallrats movie, I’m going to do 10 episodes of a Mallrats series.”

The 10-part series will be shot in the original mall it was filmed at, in Exton, Pennsylvania, and then shopped to networks for a release. Smith has been working on a film sequel to Mallrats (called Mallbrats) for a little over a year, and at one point he had most of the original cast back on board, but no word about whether they'd come along for the revamped TV show version. The original cast included Jason Lee, Michael Rooker, Shannon Doherty, and Ben Affleck, and it would be awesome if Smith could score them all back for the series. Chances are Affleck is too caught up in the DC world to commit to it, but I'd just be happy to see Jason Mewes and Jason Lee again!

Mads Mikkelsen Says The ROGUE ONE Reshoots Are Just Adding a "Final Polishing"

For the past week or so, reports about reshoots on Gareth Edwards' Star Wars prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story have been analyzed to death. Some people are almost gleefully talking about how this means the movie is in trouble and it's a disaster in the making, but considering all of the reshoots that went into The Force Awakens and how many terrific moments that added to the film (practically all of Daisy Ridley and John Boyega's early interactions, which set the tone for their friendship; Oscar Isaac's best lines as Poe Dameron when he was being sarcastic with Kylo Ren, and many of those he ad-libbed), I don't think we should worry until we see the final movie.

Someone who's actually in the film seems to share that opinion. Mads Mikkelsen, who's playing a mysterious character (we know a little about him), gave an interview to The Independent and they asked about the reshoots:

Basically, all the big films I have done always have reshoots, it is part of their budget. They’re either not super happy with a scene bit, the way we were acting, or maybe there’s something they want to add. It’s not a new thing, it happens with every film. Whether it’s bigger or less, I have no idea, I have nothing to compare with. It’s the same film, it’s just adding little bits here and there to do the final polishing. That’s my feeling.

I loved the first Rogue One trailer, so I'm just going to choose not to consider these reshoots a big deal unless it's very obvious that they happened in the final film and the movie is bad (cough cough..Fantastic Four...cough).

I guess I didn't question much when Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out because I was so pumped to see a Star Wars film again, but after seeing this Dorkly video, I realize I missed a lot of stuff! Why was it relevant that all those planets were destroyed? When did Kylo Ren get Vader's helmet? All these questions and more are answered in the video below!

First Preview For Anime Adaptation of Iconic Manga BERSERK Appears Online

The newest adaptation of Berserk appeared online today, and the reception has been mixed. The manga has been a bestseller and award winner, most noted for its graphic violence and sexual content. The manga itself touches on the morality of humanity and good and evil. We follow a lone mercenary named Guts and his time in this land. The preview can be found below:

The response from the anime community on the web has been all over the place. For the most part, I read people say the preview looks low budget and cheap in some parts, but others say they like the gritty art style. Overall, most people are excited about this new series, but are concerned it won't "push enough limits." Apparently the manga is pretty dark and, while I didn't go into it, a lot of people are wondering if the "rape horse" will be in the series. Sounds pretty brutal.

Marvel Studios is Definitely Coming to San Diego Comic-Con This Year

Marvel Studios took last year off from attending San Diego Comic-Con, but they'll be there again in 2016. Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson shared this photo on Twitter this morning:

And Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn replied:

You can bet that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will be there too, and maybe even the Russo Bros. pimping Avengers: Infinity War. I wouldn't be surprised if the Brie Larson/Captain Marvel news is made official at the con, or if a director announcement happened for that movie. What do you hope to see from them this year?

INDIANA JONES 5 Secures Legendary Composer John Williams

The upcoming Indiana Jones 5 has secured John Williams’ return to the franchise! Williams is one of the most iconic composers in film history, toting fifty Academy Awards nominations, second only to Walt Disney himself. Along with his long list of awards, Williams is most recognized for his work on Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park. Williams isn’t the only one returning to the franchise — Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg are coming back as well.

Williams’ contributions to film cannot be understated, with his epic scores being some of the medium's most recognized compositions. You would be hard pressed to find someone who can’t recognize the Indiana Jones or Star Wars theme songs.

I’m excited that John Williams is on board with this film; hopefully it will be much better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Indiana Jones is one of the most exciting franchises and I really hope for a return to form, and that the reigns get passed on to someone else. What do you guys think? Watch: How Pixar Created FINDING DORY's Hank, The Studio's Most Complex Character So Far

In this video from CNET, Finding Dory character supervisor Jeremie Talbot explains just some of the painstaking work that Pixar animators and researchers put into creating Hank the octopus (actually, he's missing an arm, so he's a septopus), which is the most complex character the studio has created so far. This is a shortened version of the presentation I saw at an early press day for the movie (read much more about that here), and it's the kind of thing I'm always bummed I'm not able to show you guys because it's always better to see it with your own eyes instead of reading someone's description of it. Thanks to CNET for bridging the gap.

Finding Dory is getting some pretty solid early buzz from its earliest reviews. I'm seeing it this weekend, so we should have our own review for you on the site sometime next week. The film hits theaters on June 17, 2016.

Is Brian Michael Bendis' SCARLET Marvel Comic Being Adapted as an HBO Show?

$

Update: Deadline has now updated their report with more information, including that the show is heading to HBO's sister channel Cinemax, not HBO themselves. There's also another quote from Bendis: “Scarlet is a list of things you can’t get made. Here’s a female lead who’s killing cops because her world is broken.” But, he says, “when it was sold it was sold to people who were actively looking for that, so that put us in a good place. So stay tuned.” Original article follows:

At the ATX Television Festival today, comic writer Brian Michael Bendis — who created both PlayStation's Powers and Alias, the comic on which Jessica Jones is based — made an interesting comment about the potential future of another one of his comic properties, the Marvel/Icon series Scarlet. According to Deadline, Bendis said:

"I do a book called Scarlet which is soon to be announced also in our universe of television. Not announced yet, but HBO."

Hilariously, the same article says that an HBO representative said "the network is not familiar with the project." So obviously someone's either lying, there's been a pretty big misunderstanding, or Bendis has only had early conversations with a limited number of HBO people about this potential show and word hasn't yet reached its PR department.

Scarlet, which Bendis co-created with artist Alex Maleev, is described like this at Amazon:

"Scarlet is the story of a woman pushed to the edge by all that is wrong with the world...A woman who will not back down...A woman who discovers within herself the power to start a modern American revolution!
Scarlet has declared war on a city strangled from within by corruption! Her call to arms has been heard all over the world...but now Scarlet makes her boldest move yet, taking City Hall hostage while the entire country watches. How will the public react to her list of demands? Can a modern revolution gain traction? And what will the government do to shut her down? The answers will surprise you, as Scarlet finds herself forced to make a dangerous and desperate move...letting them capture her!"

When I first saw this news and read Bendis, Marvel, and Scarlet, I thought this might be a Scarlet Witch comic that could mean Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch was getting her own TV show. Frankly, I was relieved to hear that's not the case, since I'm not sure I could handle that accent for multiple hours on end. We'll see if this develops into anything or if it ends up on the scrap heap.

Rumor: CRASH BANDICOOT Coming To SKYLANDERS

Review: DYING LAUGHING Dives Deep into Stand-Up Comedy (L.A. Film Fest 2016)

$
0
0

A poetic, brutally candid examination of stand-up comedy, Dying Laughing features a murder’s row of famous comedians telling honest, genuine stories about the art form they love.

As someone who is borderline obsessed with interviews — listening to them, reading them, watching them, even conducting them — I’m predisposed to like this movie, because it’s comprised almost entirely of conversations with stand-up greats. (There are a handful of shots of the American landscape and a few of the interiors of comedy clubs, but it’s mostly comedians sitting in front of a backdrop addressing the camera.) Fair warning, though: a movie featuring Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Kevin Hart, and a dozen other comedy superstars might come with expectations that you’re going to spend the whole time laughing, and that’s far from the truth here. Instead of a laugh riot, Dying Laughing is basically an instruction manual of all the key moments in a stand-up’s life. It’s a step by step guide of what to expect during your first time on stage, a description of the unique rush of getting laughs, a depressing explanation of life on the road, and a heartbreaking layout of what it feels like when you inevitably bomb.

Those who don’t have any personal desire to be a stand-up may glaze over at times because these stories are extremely specific, and I’m not sure a majority of the messages have applications in other areas of life. If you do happen to have that dream, this movie is a clear roadmap of what to expect; if you’re not really that into comedy, you won’t find much to engage with here.

The movie goes to some unexpectedly dark places, and there’s the sense that talking through what it’s like to be a comedian is a form of therapy for some of the subjects. Many touch upon how comedians are traditionally damaged people, and they comment on the ridiculousness of needing approval from strangers in order to feel good about themselves. The topic of depression comes up more than a few times, and a couple grapple with the existential crisis of how being booed off a stage doesn’t just mean the audience didn’t like their material, it means they didn’t like the comedian since the material reflects the very core of the performer. Some even break down in tears discussing the memory of their worst nights on stage or the joy of finding a community of like-minded people.

Not content with being a breezy fluff piece about what it’s like to be a comedian, Dying Laughing cuts to the core of what these often-iconic performers truly think and feel about their profession. It’s catnip for comedy nerds, and an invaluable resource for those dreaming of standing on stage one day.

Tyrant Nation: Ep. 24 — Our E3 Predictions!

Kiefer Sutherland Might Return to 24: LEGACY as Jack Bauer After All

$

After falling out of love with the original 24 in a big way when the show was regularly on the air, tuning in for a couple episodes of 24: Live Another Day and then bailing on that, I was really hoping to like 24: Legacy. But as much as the first trailer introduced a new protagonist and tried to give it a fresh setup, it still looks very similar to the version that came before it (which, of course, is exactly what the network wants). It's a little too similar for my tastes, but that's fine — hopefully those who dug the show all the way through its run will dig this one, too.

After telling the BBC a few months ago that he would "definitely not return in any way" for more 24, original series star Kiefer Sutherland has now apparently changed his mind. Deadline relays a quote from producer Howard Gordon, who told a crowd at the ATX Television Festival that in regards to coming back and reprising his role as Agent Jack Bauer, Sutherland "hasn't ruled it out" and "the character feels alive" to appear in the spinoff or a future movie.

Sutherland is going to be headlining a new show called Designated Survivor, but apparently there's enough room for him to show up in a supporting capacity as Bauer in a storyline during the back half of Legacy's first season. He's taking an executive producer credit on the new show, but doesn't yet have a contract in place to act in it. We'll see if he changes his mind officially, or if he's finally left the insane life of CTU behind him.

Here's a nice way to cap off your Friday. Variety is currently hosting a series in which actors interview other actors, and here's a quick clip from when Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch interviewed Sir Patrick Stewart that you'll probably enjoy. Middleditch forces Stewart to play "F---, Marry, Kill" with three Star Trek: The Next Generation characters, and half of the fun of the video is watching Stewart figure out the rules, since he'd never heard of the game before.
