Sharon Stone Reveals Another Detail About Her Mysterious Marvel Movie Role

$

Rev up your speculation engines, it's time to start guessing wildly about who Sharon Stone is going to be playing in an upcoming Marvel movie. When she first revealed the news little while ago, she said she was playing "a wee part in a Marvel movie," which many took to be a hint that she might be playing Janet Van Dyne in Peyton Reed's Ant-Man and the Wasp. That would be a cool piece of casting, since it would reunite her with her Basic Instinct co-star Michael Douglas. But now, in a new profile in AARP that also included Alfre Woodard and Jane Fonda, she teased a new detail about her character that throws that assumption into question:

Meanwhile, Woodard and Stone are about to become very familiar to the highly sought-after comic-book-film crowd: Woodard's character is a villain in Marvel's anticipated Netflix series Luke Cage; Stone has been cast as a superhero — she'll only reveal that her secret power is heat — in a yet-to-be-named movie, also for Marvel.

So a female superhero with heat power? Who could that be, and what movie could that be for? Maybe Nikki, one of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics? Or maybe Janet Van Dyne actually engineered some sort of heat abilities while she was trapped in the Quantum Realm? I'd love to hear your guesses.

A DOCTOR WHO Dalek is "Exterminating" Super Bacteria

Who would've thought one of mankind's greatest fictional foes would become vital in battling a real world foe? Gizmodo is reporting that bacteria found on the body of a Doctor Who Dalek prop has been found to be able to effectively combat antibiotic-resistant super bacteria!

The find came as part of a European university's initiative to "Swab and Send." The project asks individuals to swab items in their everyday environments and send them to their labs for analysis and the potential discovery of new bacteria. Supposedly a swabbing of a BBC Dalek provided multiple strains capable of eliminating super bacteria! From BBC science host Dr. Adam Rutherford:

“We’ve got at least three different types of bacteria from the Dalek that were able to ‘exterminate’ our Micrococcus indicator strain.”

Pretty awesome, right?! Also, this is a pretty awesome initiative! There should be a lab in America doing this! I want to EXTERMINATE...EXTERMINATE!

Idris Elba and Kate Winslet Starring in Survival Romance THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US

Two of Britain's greatest acting exports are set to share the screen in a new romance/survival thriller. Variety reports that Kate Winslet is in negotiations to join Idris Elba in The Mountain Between Us, which is based on Charles Martin's 2010 book of the same name.

The book's synopsis on Amazon seems to give away the whole plot, but story essentially follows a man and woman who survive a plane crash and must band together to stay alive in the wilderness, despite broken bones and a nasty leg fracture. It tracks their story from strangers to lovers, and sounds like a hell of an opportunity for these two charismatic actors to shine in a big way.

Hany Abu-Assad (Omar, Paradise Now, The Idol) is directing, and Winslet and Elba are taking over for Margot Robbie and Charlie Hunnam, who were previously attached to this project. (As much as I appreciate the two actors, this has to be viewed as a big upgrade.) People like Michael Fassbender and Rosamund Pike have been attached at various points as this movie has tried to make its way to the big screen, but I'm hoping it has found its final leads and can move into production soon. The movie was once scheduled for release on February 10, 2017, but I can't imagine they'll have enough time to meet that date if they're just now locking in a lead actress, so expect a bit longer delay before we see this one in theaters.

I Hope This Awesome ALIEN: COVENANT Movie Connection Rumor is True

We recently got our first look at Katherine Waterston in the role of Daniels in Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant. Now we have some intriguing rumored information about this character that I hope is true. Before we get into that, let's run down some of the things we've learned over the past few months.

The film is said to include every version of xenomorph, Scott is shooting for a hard R rating, and some creepy set photos surfaced for the film, which you can see here. Then there's the synopsis, which reads:

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

We also know for a fact that this movie will directly connect to Scott's classic 1979 Alien film, and that's where this rumor comes in. The info involves one of the major ways that this new film will connect with the old one. If you don't want to know, you might not want to read ahead.

The following information originates from The Playlist:

Sources close to film and actress tell us the Waterston will be playing Ellen Ripley’s mother in “Alien: Covenant,” which is an amazing twist and true to Ridley Scott’s promise that the post-“Prometheus” prequels will eventually lead right up to the first “Alien” movie. It should be noted however that Waterston isn’t the lead of the movie, and it’s an ensemble piece like “Prometheus.”

How freakin' cool is that!? If true, then it looks like Daniels will be one of the survivors by the end. Maybe the character will take more of a leading role in the films as Scott plans on making a couple more sequels. There's no confirmation of this, but The Playlist has a pretty solid record when they post stuff like this. We'll just have to wait and see.

What do you all think of the possibility of Daniels being Ripley's mom?

The movie also stars Michael Fassbender, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Jussie Smolett (Empire), Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color),Carmen Ejogo (Selma), Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills), and Billy Crudup (Watchmen).

Alien: Covenant is set to be released on August 4, 2017.

Mindy Kaling and Helena Bonham Carter Join OCEAN'S ELEVEN Sequel

Steven Soderbergh's 2001 Ocean's Eleven remake was a breezy, star-powered heist thriller full of humor and intrigue, so I'm a little surprised someone hasn't tried to reboot or remake it already. But an all-female continuation of the franchise is on the way, with The Hunger Games' Gary Ross directing and Sandra Bullock playing Danny Ocean's ex-con sister. A new report from Showbiz411 indicates that not only is the recently-rumored Cate Blanchett confirmed to be co-starring, but Mindy Kaling and Helena Bonham Carter are on board as well. That's already a heck of a cast, and they haven't filled out the whole team yet!

The once-rumored Jennifer Lawrence apparently won't be able to fit this into her busy schedule, which is unfortunate, but I'm actually cool with seeing this opportunity go to someone else. Filming is supposed to get underway this fall in New York, where the plot will center on Bullock's team of thieves stealing a necklace from the Met Ball in order to frame a villainous gallery owner. No word yet on which characters these two new additions will play, but Blanchett is supposed to be the equivalent of Brad Pitt's Rusty from the first movie — the right-hand woman of Bullock's leader.

The production is apparently going by the name Ocean's Ocho at this stage, hinting that there will be eight members of the team instead of eleven. What do you think about Kaling and Carter joining Bullock and Blanchett? It'll be nice to see Carter away from that garish Tim Burton aesthetic she seems to love.

When looking back at the greatest comedic TV shows of all time, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele's gut-busting Comedy Central series Key & Peele simply must be in the conversation. The sheer brilliance these guys were able to produce on a weekly basis was astounding and has already seeped into comedy zeitgeist in a huge way, and ever since the show went off the air last year, I've missed it terribly. (Keanu helped a little.)

Now, for the first time ever, Comedy Central has put every sketch from the show in one place online for free, including 176 sketches that weren't available online before. Every episode of Key & Peele is there in its entirety, and there are tons of themed sections like "In The End Zone" and "The Halls of Power" that collect sketches about sports and politics, respectively. Plus, there are gifs, memes, and more to keep you entertained for hours. Hasta la vista, productivity.

Review: Anna Gunn Shines in EQUITY (L.A. Film Fest 2016)

$
0
0

Set in the high-powered world of New York City finance, Equity is a showcase for Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn to prove she unequivocally has what it takes to headline a movie.

Naomi Bishop (Gunn) works for one of the world’s largest banks, and she has a successful track record investing in start-up companies that sell for big bucks when they go public. Her last deal didn’t go so well, but she brushes herself off and she and her VP/assistant Erin (Sarah Megan Thomas) move on to dealing with Cachet, a promising privacy company despite its douchey tech bro founder. Meanwhile, Naomi’s old friend Sam (Orange is the New Black’s Alysia Reiner), now working at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, begins investigating a shady figure (Craig Bierko) who has ties to Michael Conners (James Purefoy), a broker at Naomi’s bank who Naomi’s sleeping with. The movie tracks all of these players as Cachet’s IPO approaches its launch, detailing all of the broken alliances, sold secrets, and power moves made behind closed doors.

I expect to see some people comparing this to The Big Short, but this movie doesn’t stop to explain things to the audience the way Adam McKay’s film does. Instead, this shares more DNA with Wall Street, which refuses to define its jargon and terms and expects the audience to pick it up along the way. (I don’t follow the financial world at all, but even if you don’t understand what an IPO or a VC is, the emotional throughlines of both movies are easy to grasp). There’s also a riff on Wall Street’s famous “Greed is Good” speech, in which Naomi talks about how much she likes money and how it’s finally acceptable for women to openly talk about ambition. (This movie clearly wants to be remembered for that scene, since two different characters say it over the course of the film.)

As a title, Equity has a dual meaning: there’s the financial definition (“equity: the value of the shares issued by a company”), and the alternate definition that deals with being treated fairly and impartially. While the film is outwardly about the first meaning, it’s more concerned with the second. Naomi and Erin are both trying to find a way to work in an environment that is inherently unfair to them because they’re women, and for most of the movie, those challenges are explored in a competent way. But late in the film, there’s a scene that slams home the metaphor so hard that I fear if this film has any cultural impact at all, it’s going to be for this scene alone, a much worse version of There Will Be Blood’s “I drink your milkshake” moment. One of Naomi’s male employees is eating a chocolate chip cookie, and she asks for one. He brings her one with only three chocolate chips in it, and she GOES OFF on him for bringing her one with less chips in it than the one he ate. I figured this movie would touch on the idea of wage disparity between men and women, but I never imagined it would do it with a chocolate chip cookie metaphor. The sad part is, you can take that scene out of the movie and the film would be better for it; it’s unnecessary repetition of a concept that’s already been explored.

Unfortunately, it’s all downhill after that. The movie loses its footing as it lurches toward the finish line, which is a shame because the first two thirds are solid. The cinematography is crisp and warm, the script establishes the characters beautifully in a short amount of time and kept me hooked as it unspooled (until the cookie scene), and the acting is strong as well — Purefoy and Bierko give welcome performances, but Anna Gunn is tremendous and Sarah Megan Thomas is outstanding as her underpaid and overworked VP.

A cautionary tale about the danger of undervaluing employees, Equity gets wrapped up in its betrayals and hits a few snags with its ending, but if you’re willing to forgive that and are more interested in witnessing a powerhouse performance, this will do the trick.

Mel Gibson Is Developing PASSION OF THE CHRIST Sequel

Mel Gibson is working with his Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace on a sequel to The Passion of the Christ. I've gotta say... I didn't see that coming! Gibson self-financed Passion of the Christ with 30 million dollars which exploded in theaters when it was released in 2004 and made over 611 million dollars worldwide.

The news comes from Wallace himself while talking with THR. He told them that the movie would focus on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It's really the only way they could have gone! The report goes on to say:

Wallace, who most recently directed and co-wrote the 2014 faith-based drama Heaven Is for Real, says he and Gibson began to get serious about a sequel to The Passion, the most successful independent film of all time, while making Hacksaw Ridge, which Gibson directed and Wallace co-wrote. Hacksaw Ridge opens in November and centers on World War II Army medic Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Wallace was a religion major at Duke University and says the resurrection was a specialty of his. He told THR:

"I always wanted to tell this story. The Passion is the beginning and there's a lot more story to tell."

So this sounds like it's going to be a very personal passion project for him. That means there's a good chance the movie will be good. According to the writer, the demand in the Christian community influenced his and Gibson's decision and willingness to do another film.

"The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger."

The project is still in the very early stages, and there's no studio attached and no financial backing, but once the project starts to gain some steam, I'm sure the studios and the investors will come running.

Earlier this year, Sony released a film set around the resurrection called Risen. The first half of the film was pretty good, but it lost me during the second half. There's no doubt that Gibson and Wallace would deliver something a lot better.

SUNSPRING Is a Hilariously Confusing Sci-Fi Short Written by an A.I. Neural Network

I've got a strange, charming, and completely incoherent sci-fi short film for you to check out today called "Sunspring." The film was written by an artificial intelligent neural network that was fed hundreds of scripts for sci-fi films and TV shows. The A.I. spit out this script for "Sunspring" which is a jumbled mess of absurdity, but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable, because it is. It doesn't hurt that it stars Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch. In a weird way he actually makes it all work. Here's some information regarding the short:

In the wake of Google's AI Go victory, filmmaker Oscar Sharp turned to his technologist collaborator Ross Goodwin to build a machine that could write screenplays. They created "Jetson" and fueled him with hundreds of sci-fi TV and movie scripts. Building a team including Thomas Middleditch, star of HBO's Silicon Valley, they gave themselves 48 hours to shoot and edit whatever Jetson decided to write.

I can't even begin to tell you what the movie is about because there's no plot! It's just weird characters, in a strange setting, saying crazy things. One thing is for sure... it made me laugh.

Jennifer Lawrence and Adam McKay Team Up for Film About the Founder of Theranos

$

Last year Adam McKay won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Big Short. That was easily one of the best films of the year. It explored the corruption and ridiculousness of Wall Street and how they play the housing market. The director is now going to take on another controversial story, and he's taking Jennifer Lawrence along for the ride.

The story for the untitled film centers on Elizabeth Holmes, "the founder of the health-technology and medical-laboratory-services company Theranos. Forbes named Holmes the richest self-made woman last year. The biotech entrepreneur’s net worth was completely reduced last week when Forbes revised the estimate from $4.5 billion to zero following allegations that the company’s blood tests are inaccurate."

Damn! Lawrence is set to star in the film as Holmes, and McKay will write and direct it. This is a great project for both of them, and it has all the ingredients for an Oscar-nominated movie. After seeing what McKay did with The Big Short, he has a great storytelling style that perfectly blends humor, intensity, and drama. I can't wait to see what he does with this one. Then, of course, Lawrence is going to once again deliver an amazing performance.

transformers-the-movie-is-getting-a-30th-anniversary-blu-ray-and-dvd-release

In my mind, the original 1986 Transformers: The Movie is the best Transformers movie ever made. I don’t care what anyone says. I loved that film, even though they killed off half of my favorite characters within the first 30 minutes. When I was a kid I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen at a special screening for some of the cast and crew members. I’ll never forget that experience. The movie just oozes '80s awesomeness.

I’m excited to report that Shout! Factory and Hasbro Studio are teaming up to release a special Blu-ray and DVD to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. I seriously can’t believe that it’s been 30 freakin’ years!

The 30th Anniversary Edition will feature some bonus content and collectible packaging. The film boasts an impressive voice cast that included Orson Welles in his final role as Unicron, Peter Cullen, Eric Idle, Casey Kasem, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack, and Frank Welker.

I only own this film on VHS. Yeah, that’s right, I still have my VHS copy of it, but I don’t have a VHS player to play it on. The last time I saw Transformers: The Movie was at a special event double feature event at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood a few years back. It played with G.I. Joe: The Movie. Needless to say, I’ll definitely be picking myself up a Blu-ray copy of the film when it rolls out on September 13th, 2016.

Here are some additional details from the press release:

Factory with exclusive home entertainment packaged media (Blu-ray and DVD) and select digital rights to Hasbro’s Transformers – The Movie for home entertainment releases in North America. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Movie Gets a New Writer; Francis Lawrence in Talks to Direct

Universal Pictures has just hired Westworld scribe Lisa Joy to write a script for the Battlestar Galactica film they’ve been trying to develop over the past few years.

Bryan Singer was attached to direct the movie at one point but he left the project to pursue other things like X-Men. The studio is now looking at hiring Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence to helm the film. According to inside source, they are in early discussions.

It seems like Lawrence could be a decent choice to take it on. He did a solid job with The Hunger Games, and he’s also directed films such as Constantine and I Am Legend, which were both fun flicks. He's certainly not the cream of the crop, but he'll get the job done.

There’s no information on what exactly Universal is planning for this thing, but as a fan of the franchise, I’m excited to see a movie! This has the potential to be a huge sci-fi film franchise if it’s done right. So keep your fingers crossed for a great feature film adaptation.

Vicky Vale Reportedly Confirmed to Be Coming to GOTHAM Season 3

vicky-vale-reportedly-confirmed-to-be-coming-to-gotham-season-3

It looks like Gotham is bringing in some interesting new characters including a journalist who you're all familiar with named Vicky Vale. Last month TV Line speculated that Vale would be a part of the series and said:

"There’s also the recurring role of an ambitious young journalist named “Valerie” — which we’d like to think is casting-call code for Vicki Vale, though her late-20s age range makes her markedly older than Master Bruce."

The entertainment news outlet has now confirmed that the Valerie character is in fact really Vicky Vale. They said:

"We called it. The ambitious young journalist named “Valerie” that Gotham is set to introduce in Season 3 is, as we predicted, none other than Vicki Vale."

Vicky Vale is a great character, and she was previously portrayed by Kim Basinger in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman. She will also be joined by a few other characters. According to the report, producers are looking to cast a villain who "learns people’s secrets and manipulates them to do his bidding" as well as a young villainess "who uses her sexuality to entrap men."

There are no names given for these characters, but the first villain sounds like it could be J. Edgar Hoover, and let's face it, the second one mentioned could be any diabolical woman who would use her sexuality for evil. .

With the new Power Rangers movie coming out in the near future, artist Carlos Dattoli took on the challenge of redesigning the heroic characters from the classic series in his own style. The results are impressively cool. I spent a bit of time comparing these character designs for the upcoming movie, and even though I like aspects of both designs, I think the ones created by Dattoli are better and have more of a classic feel to them. I like the slick look and the simplicity. The costumes being used in the movie have a little too much going on with the added armor and the glowing chests. Check out the photos below and let us know what costume designs you like better.

J.B. Smoove Says Larry David Is Considering CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM Season 9

HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of my favorite comedy series ever, and I've been hoping that Larry David would do a ninth season. Since season eight concluded in 2011, I've been getting my Larry David comedy fix from reruns, and I even went to New York and saw his Broadway show Fish in the Dark, which was freakin' hilarious!

Now it looks like there's a possibility that a ninth season could actually happen! J.B. Smoove recently appeared on Rich Eisen’s radio show, and when asked about doing another season he offered some promising and hopeful news, saying:

"I just talk about regular stuff with him; it’s not always Curb stuff. This time, he brings up Curb Your Enthusiasm. I never brought it up. This was about a month ago. He said, ‘You know, I’m thinking about coming back.’ See, that’s great because he has not said no, which puts us in a great position for possibilities. That means it’s still going. If Larry does not say no, there is a possibility he may say yes. He went extra and said, ‘If I do come back, are you going to be available?’ I said, ‘You know something, Larry? I’m going to be available. Call me. Give me early notice. I’ll be there.’ I’ll move anything I’m doing to the side for Curb Your Enthusiasm, which would be a fabulous thing to do. Season nine would be fabulous."

It sounds to me like David is actually serious about getting the gang back together for another season! I don't want to get my hopes up because you never know... if could not happen, but it's hard not to get excited with this kind of talk! If David is looking to do a ninth season, I hope he moves on it quickly because I'd love to see some new Curb sooner rather than later!

Owl Fired After Escaping During HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD

With all the controversy that has surrounded casting, I groaned when I read the headline from i09. People getting fired after the first couple performances of the play of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child?! Hopefully this wasn't a knee-jerk reaction to audience responses.

Turns out it was an owl that got fired!

Supposedly, the owl is supposed to fly out on set and then back to its handler. When the owl was released for the segment, it flew out into the audience and into the shadows of the theater. The incident happened during a preview. The show has not begun its official run.

Ultimately, the live owls were taken away and are now replaced with realistic looking plush owls! You don't mess with owls, guys! My dad shined a flashlight at one on a streetlamp once and it swooped on us! Easily one of the top 5 scariest moments of my childhood.
