first-look-at-tom-cruise-and-cobie-smulders-in-jack-reacher-never-go-back1

That first Jack Reacher film sure did kick some ass. I know fans of the book series weren’t on board with Tom Cruise playing the title character, but I still thought he was awesome in the role. He may not have had the physical appearance of the character, but he had the attitude.

Today we have two photos from Jack Reacher: Never Go Back to share with you, and they offer us our first look at Cruise and Cobie Smulders in the sequel. The first image above shows them in a vibrant New Orleans setting, and the one below features Reacher looking a little beat up and being arrested.

The movie is being directed by Ed Zwick (The Last Samurai) this time around, and when talking to People Magazine about working with Cruise, he said:

"I've never seen anybody more prepared both physically and mentally than Tom, He's tireless and unbelievably focused."

The director goes on to explain that the movie will continue to dive into the character of Reacher and says Cruise is continuing to do his stunt work in the film:

"It's a pretty boring job to be Tom's stunt double, He did all of his own stunts. It's almost a hallmark of what he does. He does every bit of it himself."

The movie is said to be based on the 18th book in the Jack Reacher series which shares the title of the movie. Here is the description of that book that will give an idea of what the plot might entail:

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back hits theaters on October 21st.

Vomit-Inducing Red-Band Teaser Trailer for THE GREASY STRANGLER

Earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, I attempted to watch a movie called The Greasy Strangler. I couldn’t sit through the whole thing because it was one of the most nauseating and vile films that I’ve tried to watch. I've only walked out of three films in my life, and this was one of them. I wrote a first impression review/rant of it and an explanation of why I walked out of it that you can read here if you want. Normally I enjoy strange, odd, and unique films, but this one just rubbed me in all the wrong way in all the wrong places.

The first very red-band teaser trailer has been released for the film, and it pretty much represents everything that I hated about what I saw in this movie. I’m sure people are going to watch the film out of curiosity. It’s the kind of film that will gain a cult following over the years. This movie just wasn’t for me. I’ll let the film speak for itself when you watch the trailer. Here's the synopsis for the film:

This Los Angeles–set tale follows Ronnie, a man who runs a disco walking tour along with his browbeaten son, Brayden. When a sexy, alluring woman named Janet comes to take the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her attentions. It also brings about the appearance of an oily, slimy, inhuman maniac who stalks the streets at night and strangles the innocent—soon dubbed “the Greasy Strangler.”

The movie was directed by Jim Hosking and stars Michael St. Michaels, Sky Elobar, and Elizabeth De Razzo. Elijah Wood’s production company SpectreVision produced the film. The movie is set to be released in October. What you are about to see cannot be unseen, so watch at your own risk.

Review: THE CONJURING 2 Is a Masterful, Terrifying Horror Movie

Director James Wan has done it again and created another horror movie masterpiece with The Conjuring 2. Wan has made one great movie after another, and it seems like he’s perfected the craft of bringing horrific and nightmarish stories to life on the big screen. Wan is one of my favorite directors working in Hollywood today because he has yet to disappoint me.

Judging from what I saw in the trailers for The Conjuring 2, I knew the movie was going to be solid. The first movie was a fantastic film, and I’ll admit, I was a little worried that this sequel wouldn't be as good and hit the bar that was set with the first film, but I’m happy to say that it did and even raised it!

One of my favorite things about what Wan does with his movies like this is the way he visualizes the story and tells it through his camera lens. He sets up his shots so precisely and they are done in a way that is meant to mess with the audience's head and build the fear in them until he’s ready to throw something terrifying out at them. It’s at that point the audience reacts with jumps and screams, and there were a ton of those fearful reactions in the screening attended for this film.

For me, one of the main tests for a great horror film is that it has to scare the shit out of me. I’ve been watching horror films since I was a kid, so I’ve kinda become desensitized to them. Most horror films don’t freak me out like they used to when I was growing up, so if a movie comes along that scares me now, then that movie is a complete success in my mind.

The Conjuring 2 terrified me! It’s one of those horror stories that had a lingering effect on me after the movie ended, which means that fear followed me home, and when I tried to sleep that night my imagination ignited, and every little sound I heard freaked me out, and every time I looked in the dark corner of my room I thought something was going to jump out at me. Call me crazy, but I love that feeling! The rush I get from fear makes me giddy.

Not only did the movie scare me, but it also told great story, which is based on the actual events surrounding the Enfield Poltergeist. The haunting occurred in Enfield England from 1977 to 1979 and terrorized the Hodgson family, which consisted of a mother and her four children. The film brings all of the crazy events that this family went through to life, and it mostly centers around 11-year-old Janet Hodgson. As the hauntings escalate and life gets virtually unbearable, Ed and Lorraine Warren are brought in to investigate if the activity is legitimate or if it's being faked. It turned out to be one of the Warrens' most insane paranormal investigation cases.

The movie obviously embellishes some of the story and adds some things to make the movie flow and give the story even more of a kick, which is fine. The things that Wan did with this movie were fantastic. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to actually experience the kind of stuff that was included in the movie.

The movie has a talented cast of actors that include the return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the Warrens. They once again they were fantastic in their roles, and they were joined by Madison Wolfe, who gave an incredible performance as Janet. The film also co-starred Frances O’Conner, Lauren Esposito, Benjamin Haigh, and Patrick McAuley as the rest of the Hodgson family, and they all did such a great job brining their characters to life.

I had such a fun time watching this movie, and I think any fan of the horror genre will appreciate it. It’s a movie that you don’t want to miss seeing on a big screen with an audience of screaming people. That's half the fun of watching horror films!

SUICIDE SQUAD NBA Finals TV Spot - "Don't Forget, We're the Bad Guys"

During the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers a new TV spot aired for Suicide Squad. That spot is now online for you to watch if you aren't really into watching sports. It's a fun spot that gives us a bit of new footage, and Will Smith's Deadshot needs to remind his team that they are the bad guys.

In other news regarding the film, Jared Leto recently did an interview with Total Film (via Digital Spy) about The Joker, in which he said that “the only villain who may be more infamous is the devil. The Joker is an icon, a legend, the baddest of the bad and seems to be having the most fun. Hard not to be a fan of that. I knew I was going to have to dive deep and go to a place I had never gone before.”

That sounds about right. Suicide Squad was also recently officially given a PG-13 rating and is set to be released on August 5th.

Bruce Campbell Launches Hilarious ASH VS. EVIL DEAD Emmy Nomination Campaign

Bruce Campbell wants to be nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on Ash Vs. Evil Dead so bad that he has started his own hilarious campaign to make it happen! This is all part of a make the “Emmys groovy again” campaign, and he’s released two videos to kick it off. These videos will be followed by billboards around intersections of Los Angeles like Sunset and Fairfax. You will also see a huge push online through social media and digital advertising. Campbell and Starz are absolutely serious about this, and you know what? He freakin’ deserves it!!!

Starz EVP of Communications Theano Apostolou said in a statement to Deadline:

“If there’s one thing that the 2016 campaign season has taught us, it’s that voters respond to a bold pitch. You can’t really go wrong by getting out of the way and letting Bruce Campbell do what he does best… which is pitch Bruce Campbell. We think his chainsaw hand will help cut through all the noise.”

Campbell totally deserves the recognition for his role of Ash in the horror comedy series, and you can watch the videos in which he hopes to convince you and the people at the Emmys that he's worthy of the nomination below. I hope the Emmy voters are open and bold enough to nominate Campbell for the Outstanding Lead Comedy Actor award.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead is an incredibly funny series, and Campbell is so freakin’ funny in it. The first season was one of my favorite shows last year. If anyone deserves to be nominated, it's Campbell!

Rian Johnson Posts New STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Set Photo as Filming Nears Completion

Director Rian Johnson is almost done shooting Star Wars: Episode VIIIand he recently released a photo from the set of the film features Luke Skywalker's robe with the following caption… “In the home stretch.” The robe is placed in a cave-like setting with some recording equipment next to it.

I don’t know if I like the whole empty robe thing. As we’ve learned from past films, empty robes aren’t a good thing for the Jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi was struck down by Vader in A New Hope, and all he left behind was his robe. The first thing I thought of when I saw this was, “They better not kill off Luke next!” That’s just how my mind works. On a lighter note, maybe Luke just leaves his old Jedi robe in a cave and trades his old stinky clothes in for some new fresh ones before he embarks on his new adventure.

Johnson probably just posted the photo because he thought it would be something cool to share with the fans. There’s most likely no meaning behind it at all. But you never know! These directors are tricky, and sometimes they like to mess with our heads!

Star Wars: Episode VIII is in principal photography now, and the film will be released on December 15th, 2017. To see some photos from the set that Johnson has posted in the past, click here.

Animatic Shows Captain America and Black Widow Fight in Cut Scene from CIVIL WAR

I've got a cool animatic for you to watch that features an scene that was cut from the airport battle sequence in Captain America: Civil War. That scene focuses on a fight between Captain America and Black Widow. It's actually a great little scene that would have been cool to see brought to life in the movie. The animatic comes from Darrin Denlinger, who offers the following caption with the video:

"Small animatic beat I did from the Airport Battle in Captain America: Civil War. Edited and sound designed by Coral D'Alessandro."

It's fun to see the previsualizations of action scenes like this. It gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how the ideas for these elaborate fight sequences come together in the early stages of film production.

So why was the scene cut? My guess is because Black Widow steals Cap's shield, and after that already happened with Spider-Man it would be repetitive to do it again. There are also some repetitive fighting moves that she does. The scene features Ant-Man and War Machine in action as well. Enjoy!

Ron Howard Set to Direct Epic Sci-Fi Film SEVENEVES

$

Director Ron Howard has just attached himself to a pretty epic-sounding sci-fi film project called Seveneves, and he is reuniting with Apollo 13 screenwriter Bill Broyles to bring it to the big screen. This story has a huge concept and it sounds like it could end up being Howard's most ambitious film yet.

The movie is based on a novel written by Neal Stephenson and it's described as "a thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years." Here's the full description of the book:

A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain...

Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

That just sounds like such a huge story to tell. It's like something we'd expect to see Christopher Nolan take on. I'm a big fan of Howard, who has made several great films throughout his career, and it's exciting to see him take something on of this scale. Howard is also producing the film with his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer

Review: A HUNDRED STREETS (L.A. Film Fest 2016)

$
0
0

Disparate people of different race, background, and social status intersect and bounce off each other in Jim O’Hanlon’s A Hundred Streets, a London-set film that attempts to make grand statements about life but ends up being a middling yet still somewhat enjoyable trek through key moments in their lives.

Former rugby superstar Max (Idris Elba) struggles with sobriety after he screwed his nanny and became estranged from his wife Emily (Gemma Arterton), who’s stuck dealing with their children and her own rebound relationship. A young drug dealer named Kingsley (Legends of Tomorrow’s Franz Drameh) feels trapped in his life in the blocks and yearns for a way out, spending his nights philosophizing with harboring hopes of using his creativity in a better line of work. Goofy cabbie George (Charlie Creed-Miles) just wants to be able to adopt a child to make his wife happy. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had about enough of the annoying, Crash-esque trope in which movie characters often unrealistically converge for a single event that dramatically changes all of their lives forever. Thankfully, that’s not the case here; this is more like a couple of characters connect, the story progresses a bit, a familiar face passes in the background, and the camera picks up that story and continues the narrative that way. It’s never obnoxious and always remains this side of plausible, since many of the characters live in the same relatively small London neighborhood.

Full of gorgeous shots of London, the camera lovingly frames all of its lead actors, who do strong work here. I haven’t seen any of Luther so I’m not sure how much of this is retreading familiar territory for Elba, but he brings a physicality to this performance that makes his past as an athlete instantly believable, along with a volatility and vulnerability that works well for this character. Arterton, who Americans might recognize from her mostly expendable roles in big budget action movies like Prince of Persia, Clash of the Titans, and Quantum of Solace, may surprise people with her complicated, sensitive Emily; seeing her here makes me wonder what else she’s capable of, whereas she was instantly forgotten in those aforementioned blockbusters. Drameh, with his thick accent and his character’s desire for a life outside of society’s established role for him, reminded me a bit of John Boyega in Attack the Block; it was only when I looked him up that I realized Drameh himself was actually in Attack the Block also, playing the character of Dennis. Regardless, this is a breakout role for him, and this movie definitely put him on my radar.

Diving into the details of the developments of each of these characters seems unnecessary, especially since I largely found the plot to be more functional than truly compelling. While I don’t think this is going to be one of the festival’s buzziest movies, it has a solid cast and shows some promise as a feature debut for O’Hanlon. Maybe with a slightly better script, he’ll be able to create something a bit more memorable down the road.

Yesterday was Ghostbusters Day, and Sony Pictures released a few new featurettes for Paul Feig's upcoming Ghostbusters film that concentrated on the new Ecto-1 and the four leading ladies of the movie. Those actresses — Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon — appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, and were joined by special guests Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts.

Murray in particular had some nice things to say about the new movie:

"This is a tough movie to pull off because it's a big concept. There's a lot on the plate, there's a lot of expectation, and Danny and I and Annie and Ernie were just screaming and cheering like we were at a sporting event at the end of it."

SUPER MARIO BROS. Director Says He Wanted Danny DeVito as Mario

Ricky Morton, the director of the horrid Super Mario Bros. film, said Bob Hoskins was not always the choice for the role of Mario, and that they originally wanted Danny DeVito in the role! His story (which he shared with scifinow) is rather anticlimactic:

Well, Danny DeVito turned us down. Mario was the main character in the cast, and Bob was available. It was basically about availability. There are all these stories about the way people are cast but it’s normally about availability…

The film would go on to be a light smear on the otherwise illustrious career of Hoskins, but I can't help but wonder what, if anything, it would've done to DeVito. Side note: how often would you have heard "we settled for Bob Hoskins because DeVito wasn't available," in Hollywood back then?

Part of me thinks the film would've been better with DeVito, at least comedy-wise. The script was still terrible...and to think we almost had a sequel!

First Trailer For Netflix's STRANGER THINGS, a Throwback To Classic Amblin '80s Films

Here's the first trailer and poster for Stranger Things, a new Netflix TV series that looks like an exciting throwback to classic '80s films like the ones made by Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment. It has all the hallmarks of one of those films: something supernatural going on in a small town, mysterious government entities, child protagonists, and a strong family component. I like the look of the show from what I'm seeing here, and it should be interesting to see if writer/director/co-showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer can sustain that Amblin tone over the course of multiple hours of a television show.

Every episode of the first season will be available to stream on July 15, 2016.

A love letter to the supernatural classics of the 80's, Stranger Things is the story of a young boy who vanishes into thin air. As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl.

Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Cara Buono, Charlie Heaton, and Matthew Modine.

Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer (Wayward Pines, Hidden) serve as writer, directors and co-showrunners of the series, and are executive producers along with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via their 21 Laps entertainment banner (The Spectacular Now, Night At The Museum, Real Steel, Date Night). Shawn Levy also serves as director. Stranger Things is a Netflix original series.
