Simon Kinberg Talks About The Failure of FANTASTIC FOUR, Still Wants a Sequel

Last year's Fantastic Four was a colossal creative failure for 20th Century Fox. It put Josh Trank in director's jail (maybe forever?) and received such hatred from fans that a sequel seemed completely out of the question. But months later, writer/producer Simon Kinberg is still holding out hope that we'll see the same cast members suit up for another adventure. He told Den of Geek:

“We want to make another Fantastic Four movie. We love that cast - I mean if I were to say to you now Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller, and Kate [Mara] and Jamie [Bell] are great actors - we love that cast. I love the comic, I mean I love it almost as much as X-Men.

“We'll try to be truer to the essence of the tone of Fantastic Four, which is completely - well, not completely, but largely - distinct from the X-Men, which is brighter, funner, more optimistic tone. I think we tried to make a darker Fantastic Four movie, which seemed like a radical idea but we were kind of messing with the DNA of the actual comic instead of trusting the DNA of the comic.”

You'd think that Hollywood would have learned by now that darker doesn't always automatically equal better. Kingberg knows the first film didn't live up to its potential:

“We didn't make a good movie, and the world voted, and I think they probably voted correctly. And you can't make a good movie every time out - not everybody does. We actually have a pretty good batting average, all things considered. But I think we made many mistakes when we made that movie - mistakes that we learned from and we wouldn't repeat.”

The obvious ideal scenario here is for the rights of the characters to return to Marvel Studios. But let's assume that isn't going to happen (at least for a few more years): do diehard fans of the Fantastic Four comic even want to see a sequel with the same cast, or did the reboot leave such a bad taste in everyone's mouths that it'd be better to recast it completely and try again?

Two Villains Fight Over A Superhero in Animated Short ON SCHEDULE

Elena Manetta is going viral this morning! Manetta completed this animated film as a 4th-year thesis project at The School of Visual Arts, and I like it a lot! On Schedule features two villains who, due to a scheduling conflict, attack a superhero at the same time! The two then duke it out to see who will be the one to defeat the hero in a very well-done animated short! Great stuff, and I want to see more of the mouse guy!

Suspense-Filled Trailer For Thriller DON'T BREATHE

Don't Breathe debuted at this year's SXSW Film Festival and was a massive hit at the fest, winning over genre crowds and drawing rave reviews. It follows a trio of kids (Dylan Minnette, Jane Levy, and Daniel Zovatoo) who break into an old man's house with the intention of robbing him. The old guy's blind, so how hard can it be, right? Turns out: pretty damned hard if the old man is a Daredevil-esque badass played by Avatar baddie Stephen Lang.

If you're already hooked by that premise alone, I'd actually recommend not watching this trailer because there are some pretty great moments that would be amazing to have experienced fresh on the big screen for the first time. But if you need a bit more convincing, check out the first trailer from EW below. Don't Breathe hits theaters on August 26th.

Miike Snow Combines Classic BOND and Humor in Awesome Music Video

Miike Snow's "Genghis Khan" has been my musical addiction as of late. First off, how many popular songs do you hear that use tyrannical rulers in their chorus? Second, the music video is an homage to classic Bond films with a healthy mix of musical dance numbers! In the video, the villain enters a personal struggle as to whether or not he should destroy his arch nemesis. Things get more complicated, but I won't spoil it for you! Even if you aren't the biggest fan of his music (I wasn't until this song), check it out!

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS Trailer Seems to Give Away The Entire Movie

I like Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz, and I'm also a fan of director Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond The Pines, Blue Valentine), so I was pretty much sold on The Light Between Oceans from the start. I should have known better than to watch this trailer.

I haven't read the best-selling book on which the movie is based, but from reading the synopsis (and talking to someone who has read the book), it seems very much like this trailer essentially gives away every major beat of the story. I guess the marketing department is hoping people will just want to spend more time luxuriating in the melodrama of this cinematic world, but I don't know — I was interested before, but now I sort of feel like I've already seen the movie.

The Light Between Oceans hits theaters on September 2nd.

Toby Kebbell Joins CATEGORY 5, a Heist Thriller/Disaster Film Combo

It's been twenty years since that unfortunate cow was caught up in that tornado in Twister, and now Rob Cohen — the guy who brought you Dragonheart, The Fast and The Furious, and xXx — is combining the disaster genre with a heist film for a new film called Category 5.

Toby Kebbell has come on board as one of the film's stars, and you can read the official synopsis below:

A team of young tech hackers infiltrate a U.S. Mint facility to steal $200M in cash, just as a disastrous Category 5 hurricane – the worst storm ever recorded in the U.S. – is about to strike and level the town to the ground. The only other two people left, WILL, a meteorologist, and CASEY, a treasury agent, must survive the horrific storm, save Will’s brother BREEZE and stop the thieves from getting away with the heist of the century.

Kebbell was in last year's disappointing Fantastic Four reboot and appears in the ill-advised Ben-Hur remake later this year, but he's also been great in movies like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and shows like Black Mirror, and he has Warcraft and Kong: Skull Island coming soon. He seems like he's still working hard in supporting roles, and I wonder if this film will push him a little closer to leading man territory (if that's even something he's interested in at this stage in his career).

Scott Windhauser and Rob Cohen wrote the screenplay, so we'll see if they can manage to successfully combine enjoyable elements from both of these genres and create something that stands on its own as a solid piece of entertainment. No release date is in place yet, but we'll keep you updated.

[Insert Roar Noise Here]: Director Gareth Edwards Leaves GODZILLA 2

Here's some bad news for fans of 2014's Godzilla: director Gareth Edwards, who relaunched the film series with that entry and was slated to direct Godzilla 2, has left the sequel.

Deadline reports that the separation is amicable between the director and Legendary Pictures, and that the studio knew Edwards was moving on before they announced the new release dates for Godzilla 2 and Godzilla vs. King Kong earlier this week. The director reportedly "has his own gestating projects he wanted to pursue, and they are smaller in scale than the back-to-back tentpole-size pictures" he's been working on with 2014's Godzilla and the highly-anticipated Star Wars spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He started out with a super-small indie called Monsters before making the astonishing leap in budget to Godzilla, and I'm assuming he was dealing with even more money (mo' money, mo' problems) on Rogue One, so I certainly don't blame him for wanting to get back to basics and make a smaller movie again. Max Borenstein wrote this film's script, and the now-directorless Godzilla 2 is slated for release on March 22, 2019.

So what exactly will Edwards do instead? /Film recently spoke with Timur Bekmambetov, who was supposed to produce a film for Edwards once titled Forever that was reportedly about a young human child and a robot companion who search the galaxy for mankind's origins, and the producer seemed hopeful that the two would eventually be able to collaborate on that project. Maybe now that Godzilla 2 is out of the picture, Edwards will give that movie his full attention.

Owenergy Studios is best known for creating supercuts featuring actor Owen Wilson, but today they've strayed from their norm to bring us a video of Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey grunting, whistling, and making all kinds of spastic noises throughout his film career. I watched for about a minute and a half before thinking, "OK, there can't possibly be much more to this, right?" Oh, there's more: it goes on for another two and a half minutes. This man is one of a kind. He can't be limited to just a mere minute and a half. Behold:

Michael B. Jordan Has Just Joined Marvel's BLACK PANTHER

Michael B. Jordan has joined another big Marvel film project. THR is reporting that the actor, who previously played Johnny Storm in Fox's Fantastic Four, has just joined Marvel's Black Panther.

Jordan previously worked with the film's director, Ryan Coogler, on the films Fruitvale Station and Creed. It makes sense that the director would want to include him in Black Panther. This is also a Marvel Studios project that Jordan can be proud to be a part of!

Jordan will join Chadwick Boseman, who is taking on the role of Black Panther and possibly Lupita Nyong’o, who is currently in negotiations to play T'Challa's love interest. There's no word on who exactly Jordan will be playing, but one inside source says that it could be a villain.

The cast for Black Panther just keeps getting better and better! The film is set to be released on February 2, 2018.

Two WALKING DEAD Characters Who Seemed to Survive The Season Finale

$

The Walking Dead has been a big talking point since its Season 6 finale. Unfortunately, the way the season ended left a lot of fans with a bad taste in their mouths. I guess I am a part of the minority; I didn’t necessarily like the way it ended, but it left me with a lot of questions.

If you haven’t caught up with the most recent season of TWD and you have been living under a rock, then please stop reading. I don’t want to be labeled a spoiler guy, so do us all a favor and read a different article on the site instead if you want to avoid being spoiled.

WAIT

FOR

IT!

If you are still reading, then know that you are in for some speculation.

I am usually not a TMZ kind of guy, but I am a TWD kind of guy, so I tend to gravitate to stories involving the show and any of the cast.

TMZ reported that TWD cast members Norman Reedus and Steven Yeun were out riding their motorcycles in Georgia on the way to The Walking Dead set when they stopped to assist with a car accident. Luckily, no one was seriously injured but the men who play Daryl and Glenn stayed at the scene until emergency workers arrived.

Because the guys were heading to the show's set, I am assuming, in a grand way, that both of the characters that these actors play will survive the brutal ending of season 6. However, I have never believed that either one of them fell victim to Lucile.

I have stood by my assumption that Eugene is the first casualty of the group to fall at the hands of Negan. The season finale episode was totally a final goodbye to Eugene. He has finally taken the bull by the horns and stepped up to be the Eugene we all wanted to see him be. I think what sealed the deal is when he gave Rick the “recipe” for making ammunition. Then there was the act of Negan beating the crap out of one of our group. At the time it happened, Glenn was weakened and probably would have gone down a lot easier than the person who was killed. I could be way off base, but I don’t think so.

What do you think? Do you think Yeun and Reedus were only there to visit their buddies, or were they there because they never left the show? Let me know!

GOOSEBUMPS' Rob Letterman Officially Directing DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Movie

Variety is reporting that Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is officially on board to direct the latest live-action Dungeons & Dragons film for Warner Bros. Looks like he got a lucky roll with that 20-sided die, huh? (I've never played D&D, but that's a thing, right?) This confirms a report that came out a little while back about Letterman's involvement.

Seems like there's a bit of a resurgence going on in the world of fantasy adaptations with this project and Game of Thrones writer/producer Bryan Cogman developing a Magic: The Gathering movie. I never saw Goosebumps and am not super familiar with Letterman's work, but hey, it's gotta be better than the D&D movie that came out 16 years ago:

Sounds Like The Next X-MEN Movie Might Be Going Interstellar

An interesting interview with X-Men director Bryan Singer popped up over at Fandango today, and the director implied that while the next X-Men movie after this month's X-Men: Apocalypse is heading to the 1990s, it's also going to take at least some of the characters into space.

"[The '90s setting] was something Simon [Kinberg] and I discussed a long time ago, all the way back to when I first pitched the studio on First Class -- that they do each movie in 10-year increments. It’s a nice way for the audience to kind of keep track of the timeline, and it’s fun to play in these different eras. So that’s a good starting point. But we’ve also introduced the tenants of time travel, which already exists in the comic book. Also I imagine – and this is the first time I’ve actually answered the question this way – but another thing that’s been introduced in the comics is a big alien, interstellar tenant within the X-Men universe that hasn’t been explored. And to me, that might be kind of fun because I’m a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, and exploring the X-Men universe and being able to utilize that would be exciting, visually."

Fans were already speculating that the next movie might involve Sophie Turner's Jean Grey going through the Dark Phoenix storyline, and that "alien, interstellar" aspect would certainly go a long way toward honoring the comic book source material. We've already seen what happened when this franchise took a halfhearted swing at the Dark Phoenix story in X-Men 3, so I feel like they should go big or go home if they're going to try it for real. Singer continued:

“Like Apocalypse – like some of the imagery and characters and stakes [in that movie] – it’s something we haven’t seen before. If I’m going to be involved in a significant way, it has to be something different. Visually different and aesthetically different.”

Here's the thing. I like the idea of the X-Men going into space for exactly the reasons he mentions, but I think (and a lot of fans agree) that Singer himself should step down and make way for a new voice to come in and tell these stories. Apocalypse proves that he's just thematically repeating himself over and over again, and if you read the full Fandango interview, he seems a little hung up on talking about the next movie mostly on just a visual level. I don't care what the movie looks like if I don't actively care about the characters, so Singer's concentration on the visuals here is slightly worrisome for me.

Later in the interview, he mentions that down the road, he thinks a crossover between the X-Men, X-Force, and New Mutants could work:

“Yes, absolutely. But it has to be done right. Anytime you throw all these characters together to hit a start date, it can make a lot of money, but it can also be a clusterf*ck. To me, it has to be done with a lot of care. These things can get overwhelming, and if a character doesn’t belong in a movie, don’t use him. If the tone can still maintain itself, I’m all for it. What I’m not for is throwing a bunch of characters together and hoping it works.”

That's more like the kinds of comments fans like to hear, but I'll be blunt: at this point, I'd much rather Singer simply stop directing these movies and hand the reins to a director with a fresh vision. If he wants to produce or something, that's great, but this franchise desperately needs a new voice calling the shots. I'm excited about seeing what Josh Boone brings to the table with New Mutants, and maybe he'll do such a good job with that, he'll be able to slide over and direct the next X-Men movie as well.

What do you think? Has Singer's time with this franchise passed, or are you still excited about seeing what he can do with future films? Let me know, and then come back and update your comments after you've all seen Apocalypse — after DOFP, I was super excited about Singer's return, but after Apocalypse...not so much.

SUPERMAN Art Inspired By Richard Donner's 1978 Classic Film

Dark Hall Mansion has revealed an officially licensed limited edition Superman print created by Matt Ferguson. The illustration pays tribute to the wonderful 1978 Superman film that many of us grew up with. Richard Donner’s version of Superman, who was wonderfully portrayed by Christopher Reeve, is still my favorite version of the character. He’s a brighter, much more hopeful version of the Man of Steel than what we’ve seen in Zack Snyder’s films and that's what I love about the character!

Dark Hall Mansion will release Matt Ferguson’s classically styled and dynamic limited edition print for one of his favorite films, 1978’s “Superman.” Matt was quite keen from the start as to exactly how he envisioned his Superman piece and precisely what scene he wished to render. Matt’s artwork captures not only a key moment within the film itself but one that encompasses several classic Superman fan elements that have shaped the man of steel’s legacy since its first incarnation in 1933. Matt’s sharp blue-hued Standard edition “Superman” print is elegantly bordered with Art Deco stylings that harken to film elements while powerfully framing the central imagery as Superman comes to the rescue of his beloved Lois Lane, along with more than just a few ill placed citizens down below. Matt’s Variant “Superman” print is a heavy contrast piece with vintage overtones that gracefully counterpoints his Standard edition. The striking “Superman” foil editions perfectly compliment the Man of Steel’s thematic and creates an arresting print with the foil substrate heavily revealing itself in various areas of DHM’s most select edition.

The Superman print is currently available to purchase right here on Dark Hall Mansion’s site. So if you want one, go and get one!

New Trailer For Robert Kirkman’s Demonic Horror Series OUTCAST

new-trailer-for-robert-kirkmans-demonic-horror-series-outcast

Robert Kirkman’s upcoming new horror series Outcast is one of my most anticipated series that’s coming later this year. This series looks freakin’ awesome! The series stars Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), who is a wildly underrated actor. I’m extremely happy to see him land the lead role in a series like this and I hope it’s successful.

The series is based on the comic book (created by Kirkman), and the story centers on a guy named Kyle Barnes who battles the devil as a series of demonic possessions plague a small community. I love the nightmarish and dark tone of the series and this latest trailer gives you a taste of the horrific imagery the show has to offer. Here’s the synopsis:

The series follows Kyle Barnes, a young man who has been plagued by demonic possession all his life. Now, with the help of the Reverend Anderson, a preacher with personal demons of his own, Kyle embarks on a journey to find answers and regain the normal life he lost. But what Kyle discovers could change his fate — and the fate of the world — forever.
Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous, Gone Girl) stars as Barnes, a man searching for answers, and for redemption, who sequesters himself from those he loves for fear of causing greater hurt. Philip Glenister stars as Reverend Anderson, a West Virginia evangelist who believes he is a soldier in God’s holy war against the forces of evil on Earth. An inveterate drinker and gambler, he doesn’t believe God intends people to sweat the small stuff. Gabriel Bateman stars as Joshua Austin, an eight-year-old who lives across town from Kyle. To his family’s dismay, he appears to be in the clutches of demonic possession, but there’s something very different about this possession and its connection to Kyle Barnes.

The pilot episode was directed by Adam Wingard (You’re Next and The Guest). The series is set to premiere on June 3rd, 2016.
