ROBOT CHICKEN Season 7 Announced and Zombie Joss Whedon Revealed!

The Robot Chicken panel at New York Comic Con kicked off with an awesome sizzle reel showing fans what's in store for the rest of Season 6, and that this sixth season will end with Zombie Joss Whedon! They even showed off a quick little look at Whedon as a zombie. The Avengers director plays himself in the episode and they showed some behind the scenes footage of Whedon in a recording booth making zombie sounds, and confessing that this is the role he's been waiting for. According to our writer who was there, Lucas Lowman, "there was not one person who wasn’t laughing hysterically."

Then Seth Green made an epic announcement that all Robot Chicken fans are going to love to hear! Adult Swim renewed the series for a seventh season and will be back and badder than ever next year!! There was also some talk of doing another DC comic special -- makes us wonder when and if they will ever get around to doing a Marvel special, because that would be amazing!

Some other highlights from the panel include some Season 6 episodes that will include a Star Trek: The Next Generation sketch that shows the specifics on how and why Dr. Noonien Singh gave Data functioning sexual anatomy. There will also be a rap battle between 50 Cent and PaRappa the Rapper. Green also mentioned that he was surprised there hasn't been a Mass Effect skit yet, so maybe somewhere down the road that could happen.

Lucas went on to tell us that the team over at Robot Chicken all love what they do. "Being geeky for the geeks." These guys always put on a good panel at the conventions!

New SKYFALL Film Clip - Take the Shot

A new film clip has been released for Skyfall called 'Take the Shot", and features an extended scene that we've seen in the trailers in which James Bond is shot off a train and falls into a lake. He obviously doesn't die, but that's one hell of a long fall!

The movie was directed by Sam Mendes and stars Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory, Ola Rapace and Tonia Sotiropoulou.

The highly anticipated 23 Bond film will be released in theaters on November 9th, 2012. Do you think you could survive a fall that far?

Synopsis:

In SKYFALL, Bond’s loyalty to M (JUDI DENCH) is tested as her past returns to haunt her. 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

When Bond’s latest assignment goes gravely wrong and agents around the world are exposed, MI6 is attacked forcing M to relocate the agency. These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Gareth Mallory (RALPH FIENNES), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows – aided only by field agent, Eve (NAOMIE HARRIS) – following a trail to the mysterious Silva (JAVIER BARDEM), whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to reveal themselves.

Promo Trailer for NBC's MOCKINGBIRD LANE

NBC has revealed the first promo trailer for Bryan Fuller and Bryan Singer's pilot for Mockingbird Lane, the reboot of the 1960's monster sitcom The Munsters. The network has also announced that the episode will air on Friday, October 26th at 8 p.m. ET. The show actually doesn't really look that bad! Knowing Fuller and Singer's style I imagined it would end up looking something like this.

Here's the detailed synopsis:

In Mockingbird Lane, sweet little Eddie Munster (Mason Cook) is a normal kid about to enter the horrors of puberty. Truth is, he's about to discover that for him becoming a teenager means growing hair in truly unexpected places -- as in all over his body -- every time the moon is full! Eddie's got it pretty good though. His loving, supportive, run-of-the-mill family includes his mom Lily (Portia de Rossi), the daughter of Dracula; his dad Herman (Jerry O'Connell), who brings new meaning to "Frankenstein"; and Grandpa (Eddie Izzard), who would give Dracula a run for his money if he weren't actually Dracula! Of course then there's creepy cousin Marilyn (Charity Wakefield), who's really the odd one because she's so completely normal.

Buying a house these days is a nightmare, so Herman and Lily are shocked that no one scooped up the rambling Victorian mansion at 1313 Mockingbird Lane that was the site of a series of grisly hobo murders. Settling into their new place, they're quickly onto the mission at hand: to gently ease Eddie into the reality of his werewolf adolescence. But it's not always so easy to accept that your child is a little "different" from the rest of the kids. Meanwhile, Herman, who works as a funeral director, is suffering from a heart condition. Since he's made up mostly of spare parts, he knew his makeshift heart would eventually give out. No worries though, because Grandpa, who is pretty good at procuring body parts, is on the case. All Herman cares about is finding a new heart with the same capacity to love Lily as much as he has for so many decades.

Watch the preview trailer and let us know if you think it looks like it would make for a good series or not!

Buffy On the Prowl - Halloween Geek Art

I loved watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! It's one of those shows I wish was still around. We just don't see stuff like this on TV anymore, and it's kind of sad. Here's a great piece of Halloween Geek Art dedicated to the slayer. It was created by artist Patrick Brown who admits he hated the series until he started watching it again with his girlfriend. In fact, he reveals that it's now one of his favorite shows.

If for some reason you haven't seen the Buffy series yet, it's now on Instant Netflix and you should seriously start watching it now! It's the perfect time of year! What do you think of the illustration and its style?

What's one of your favorite Buffy episodes?

PROMETHEUS Blu-ray Review

$

Prometheus lifted off on Blu-ray. DVD and VOD this week, and it is simply stunning thanks to it's crisp 1080p transfer. The special features are equally amazing, and this is one disc that I highly recommend picking up.  Directed by Ridley Scott the film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, and Patrick Wilson

The script was penned by John Spaihts, and then cleaned up by executive producer Damon Lindelof. The story follows a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Prometheus leans more toward a science fiction film than a horror movie, which may have been what some fans were pissed off about. They were likely also upset that there were a number of unanswered questions with this film. I for one loved this movie, and can not wait to see what happens with the sequel recently teased by Scott.
One of the main things I loved about this movie is that it made you think. I love mindless movie going as much as most people, but I occasionally love a movie that makes me think. Prometheus does just that, and that is what makes the Blu-ray so cool to own. There are so many times I wanted to pause and re-watch a scene in theaters, bso I am happy that I can now do that.
If you are a fan of Michael Fassbender, you will be after seeing this movie. The scenes with David in them truly steal the movie. I can not think of another modern day actor that could have pulled that off as well as Fassbender did. Noomi Rapace was great in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and the rest of the films, but this is her first proper introduction to American audiences. Charlize Theron is not only beautiful, she is amazingly chilling in her performance.

The film was beautifully shot, and looked amazing on the big screen. The Blu-ray looks simply fantastic on my HD TV. The colors pop off the screen, and the sound made my couch shake. I was in heaven watching this movie. There are so many wonderful special features as I mentioned above.
  • Audio Commentary - Director/Producer Ridley Scott: Scott gives an extensive commentary, which goes into great detail about what went into the production of this film. Many questions are answered, including why he chose to revisit the world of Alien to the casting process to the joys and challenges of shooting in 3D. The only downfall is that Scott goes into almost too much detail of what is occurring on screen.
  • Audio Commentary - Writer John Spaihts and Writer/Executive Producer Damon Lindelof: This commentary is very insightful, despite being recorded separately and patched together. Lindelof was brought in to rework Spaihts' script, and it seems as though there is some resentment.
  • Deleted and Alternate Scenes: This is one of the most extensive collections of deleted scenes that I have seen on a disc. The collection, put together by Scott and editor Pietro Scalia is about 37-minutes long, and features snippets that mainly are for character building. There are also some scenes that give insight into the world of the engineers. You can watch the scenes alone, or with the optional commentary by Scalia and visual effects supervisor Richard Stammers.
  • The Peter Weyland Files: These are a bunch of the internet promo videos that are nicely presented in a Weyland file dossier  One of the clips suggests that Weyland's scientists had detected a signal coming from the moon in the first Alien film, and that Weyland considered it a secondary objective.
  • Quiet Eye: Elizabeth Shaw: This is a video call made by Rapace's Shaw to Weyland to introduce herself and explain her findings.
  • Happy Birthday, David: As a fan of David, I loved this feature. It introduces fans to the 8th generation android, and explains his what motivates his feelings and emotions.
  • Prometheus Transmission: A collection of pre-mission "interviews" with the crew of Prometheus ship.
  • TED Conference, 2023: If you are familiar with TED Talks, you know that they are when one of the brightest minds make a presentation. Well this presentation features a young Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) and it is very inspirational.

Boy what a panel. Let me just get the great, awesome, fantastic news out of the way first.

Coulson lives.

Yeah that’s right. In the upcoming SHIELD TV series for ABC executively produced by Joss Whedon, Clark Gregg AKA Agent Phil Coulson will be leading the ensemble of SHIELD Operatives. Gregg announced it himself in the flesh, along with Whedon and Kevin Feige who were there via a prerecorded video.

There was also a tribute video for Agent Coulson which brought Gregg to tears.

On the animated side of things we were shown Hulk: Agents of SMASH test footage. As much as it was action packed I just can’t get over the Hulk speaking in complete fully worded sentences. Seth Green was announced among the voice cast as A-Bomb. The upcoming season of Ultimate Spider-Man will focus on the Sinister Six. Lastly, we were shown footage of the new animated Avengers series to replace Avenger: EMH titled Avengers Assemble -- simply put it looked awesome, from the humorous dynamics to the over the top action, the only thing I didn’t like? Hawkeye is wearing a red uniform. Call me a purist but I like him in his classic purple.

Well that was it! The Marvel TV panel blew me away and for good reason.

What show are you most excited for?

EVIL DEAD - First Crazy Photo and NYCC Panel Description

This movie is going to be AWESOME!

As a fan of the Evil Dead horror franchise I've been looking forward to seeing how this remake turns out. Especially because both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have expressed their excitement for the film and how thrilled they were with how it was turning out.

Sony Screen Gems brought the movie to New York Comic Con and showed off the first footage of it, and for any of you naysayers out there, I've seen the footage, and this movie is going to blow you away!

The panel included Fede Alverez, Jane Levy and Campbell, who jokingly says there will be an Evil Dead 4, and that Raimi keeps telling him it's going to happen, but before we get to it, there will be the Evil Dead remake. He then went on a hilarious rant about how incredible this new Evil Dead movie is going to be, saying  ”We did not screw you with this movie.”

As middle-aged filmmakers now, we realized it’s just too late to strap on that chainsaw again. So give the people what they want — young hot actors, fresh new buckets of blood and a fresh director.

Bruce said he would crown Jane Levy as the new Ash himself. I seriously can't tell if there is tension between Campbell and Levy or not, but Levy looked uncomfortable and Campbell kept making some really strange sarcastic uncomfortable comments. It looked like there was some tension. Levy just looked uncomfortable through the whole panel. Regardless of what was going on there, Campbell was absolutely hilarious during the panel.

They then showed us a red-band trailer from the movie… and holy hot hell! You are going to love what you see from it! The footage that was shown was absolutely insane! It may not look like the first film, but it's going to be crazy! It's so dark, so hardcore, and so so damn bloody.

The footage starts out with our young major character showing up at the cabin in the woods. They discover a blood-smeared cellar door, one of them starts reading from the book of the dead, and then all hell breaks loose! It was just so terrifyingly awesome! Levy, who plays the female version of Ash, creepily says… “We’re all going to die tonight.” Then some crazy dead monsters rise from the ground, followed by a bunch of gore scenes… A girl is in the shower cutting up the sides of her mouth; another girl saws off her arm when it becomes grotesquely infected with something, and it shows Levy being attacked by the raping tree. Then at one point, we hear a chainsaw, and the crowd goes wild! It ends with an undead version of Levy splitting her tongue in half with a knife. Completely utter carnage!

Hopefully they release what they showed online sometime in the near future, because I seriously can't wait for you all to see it! I was extremely impressed by what I saw, it was so good and so horrifying that it gave me chills. It even scared the hell out of Levy! It was the first time she had seen the footage, and when she came back up on stage she was shaking. She then admitted that it freaked her the hell out.

Campbell told the Comic-Con crowd that “It’s time for something fresh. We’ve got really talented people here who worked their asses off." He added that he will be collecting all of the apologies -- from everyone of the fans who complained when the remake was announced -- after they see the movie.

This is a movie not to miss! It hits theaters on April 12th, 2013.

Here is the Synopsis:

The reboot is true to the roots of Raimi's original as it follows a group of friends who hole up in a remote cabin, discover the "Book of the Dead" and accidentally unleash an unrelenting group of Deadites.

The "new spin" is the motivation behind the trip, with the lead character taking his younger sister to the family's cabin to help her kick her drug addiction. Without her drugs she becomes insane and difficult to control, which makes it impossible to see that she's actually possessed.

The worst part, though, is that one of the friends unleashes the demons by deciphering the Book of the Dead and reading the passages aloud. (Yeah, because just some kid would know how to read ancient text. Sigh.) Theonly way I can get behind this is if the film references the original (meaning this is a new group of kids in theexact same cabin and Bruce Campbell cameo's as "Ash" (who has now aged quite considerably).

NYCC 2012: Panel for James Wan's Horror Film THE CONJURING

Badass panel moderator Chris Hardwick brought James Wan up on stage to talk about his new horror movie The Conjuring along with the film's stars Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, and Lili TayorVera Farmiga also stars in the film but wasn't able to be at the panel.

The film is set in the 1970's and based on the true story of a family with five kids that is haunted by several spirits, and one of them is supposedly an evil ass witch, hell bent on torturing the poor family. The family calls in a couple of paranormal investigators to investigate and explain the unusual activity in the house, and help to make it stop.

The supernatural events took place in the Rhode Island, the home of the Perron family. Wilson and Farmiga play a husband and wife team of demonologists and psychic investigators, Lorraine and Ed Warren, who enter the most horrifying case of their career. Livingston and Taylor play the couple living in the house. The movie is actually based on the book House of Darkness, House of Light: The True Story by Andrea Perron.

They ended up premiering the first trailer from the film, and holy shit is was awesome! It got a great reaction from the audience. The movie comes from the same director that brought us Saw and Insidious, and looks like it could be his best work to date. It's an incredibly terrifying looking film that I know horror fans are going to love!

Hopefully they release the trailer sometime soon so you can all see it! I think you're going to be surprised by how fantastically creepy the movie looks.

They also showed a great short clip from the film that scared the hell out of those attending the panel. It got a great reaction. The clip starts out with a fun little game of hide and seek between a mother and daughter. The mom blindfolds herself as the daughter runs out and has to clap so the mom can find her. She ends up playing hide and seek with one of the ghosts in the house that escalates into a terrifying moment for the audience. She hears rustling from a closet in the room she's in and starts to move towards it with her hands stretched out -- of course the girl isn't in there! As she gets closer, a ghostly pair of hands pops out of the closet and claps. As she gets to the closet she starts to feel around and realizes her daughter isn't there. Her daughter then runs into the room behind her, and the mom is left wondering what the hell just happened.

The second clip they showed took place in the evening after the kids go to bed. The mother is in her room getting ready for bed when she starts to hear the clapping again. She thinks it's the kids and starts looking around the house as she is following the sounds of the claps. Suddenly all of the pictures and frames over the staircase are thrown to the floor in a shattering jolt. She ends up following more sounds into the cellar, where the door slams shut behind her. It's pitch black until she lights a match. As she sits there terrified, listening to the creepy noises, that same pair of ghostly hands come out of the darkness from be hind her and claps right next to her face.

I know my explanation does the scene no justice but when you see it for yourself, you'll feel the horror!

One of the things I love about what I saw from this movie is that it screws with people's minds, and it looks freakin' great! I love horror movies that skip the whole blood and guts aspects of things -- this is one of those films. It relies on story and classic film and old school tactics. The director of the movie said that he wanted this to have the same feel of several of the old ghost story movies that we don't see much of these days, paying tribute to movies like The Haunting and The Amityville Horror. The film is set in the 1970's and he really wanted it to have that creepy 70's horror movie vibe.

Here's a few other things that Wan mentioned during the Panel...

  • He says that The Conjuring is more grounded in reality than Insidious, which makes it scarier.
  • As pointed out by one of the NYCC attendees who grew up next to the actual house depicted in the film, the locations in the movie aren't very accurate. Wan explained that the "heightened" set pieces were used as a way to convey the point of view of the family this happened to.
  • He wants to direct another ghost story -- he teased that he may have another idea -- but he would also like to take on other film genres like action, sci-fi or a even comic book movie.

I loved Insidious, I thought it was a great horror flick, but I'll be honest, this looks like this is going to be even better. I loved what I saw during this panel, and hopefully Warner Bros. releases the trailer and the clips for it sometime in the near future. Once it's released we'll make sure to get them up on the site for you!

The Conjuring opens July 19, 2013, and it looks like it's going to be worth watching!

During New York Comic-Con Marvel revealed the first trailer for their new animated film Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United. They've now released the trailer online for everyone to see. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the animation and style. I like the traditional animation style that was used in the earlier animated films. Maybe the more I see the better it will get, but as of right now, I'm not sold.

Here's the synopsis:

This is the ultimate Marvel Animation Studios Super Hero team-up starring iconic Marvel characters, Iron Man and Hulk. Audiences will enjoy an adrenaline rush as they see their favorite Super Heroes as never before in this all-new groundbreaking Marvel CG-animation movie experience available only on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital platforms. Presented in the mighty Marvel manner, their combined force is unstoppable in this feature-length original animated adventure.

NYCC 2012: AVENGERS Panel

The Avengers assembled today… or at least their creators did to discuss the future of their massively popular team. In attendance were Tom Brevoort, Rick Remender, Jonathan Hickman, Kieron Gillen, and Dennis Hopeless.

The first book was you guessed it! Avengers. The lineup will star 24 characters and have them act as squads for each story arc will different heroes in each Avenger squad. I am so excited for this book… just imagine the diversity! This will be written by Hickman.

Next up was the New Avengers which will focus on the Illuminati as they work behind the scenes to save the world. The cast is made up of Black Panther, Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic, Namor, Doctor Strange, Beast, Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Bolt. This book will be gritty and dark. A realists marvel book. This too will be written by Hickman.

Then Secret Avengers was somewhat announced with Nick Spencer writing and Luke Ross on art. It will be SHIELD focused with Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Taskmaster, Winter Soldier, and an unnamed new Iron Patriot. They will also have Hulk on stand-by if the situation gets a bit out of control.

That was it as fast as they assembled it was over, but all of it good information for the future of the world’s favorite heroic ensemble.

What Avenger title are you looking forward to most?

NYCC 12: DC Comics New 52 Panel

I attended the New 52 Panel today. But I don’t know how much longer DC can keep calling it the “New” 52, yeah it’s catchy and everything, but come on... it’s been a little more than a year. Anyways the Panel was showcasing what was to come in the next year or so for most of their books.

The Panel consisted of Gregg Capullo, Jeff Lemire, Adam Glass, Justin Jordan, and Aaron Kuder.

A new Justice League title will be hitting shelves in February 2013, the book… Justice League of America. This will not replace Justice League, but it will be a new book in the upcoming fourth wave.

The team is a mash up of misfits in my opinion, which is why I am looking forward to it. It consists of Green Arrow, Katana, Martian Manhunter, the new Green Lantern, Stargirl, Vibe, Hawkman and Catwoman. This team as DC put it, “Contains the most dangerous heroes”. The title will be written by Geoff Johns and drawn by David Finch.

Next up was the multi-title bat story arc Death of the Family in which surprise guest Scott Snyder took the podium to talk a bit about what we can expect from the “clown prince of crime” AKA the Joker in the upcoming events. As Snyder put it Joker is sick and twisted and in his sick and twisted mind believes that he has been helping Batman become stronger by testing him. But the Joker believes Batman has become weak with all the help he created, Nightwing, Red Robin, Batgirl, Damian Wayne etc. So it is up to the Joker to “help” Batman out yet again. In case you don’t know what that means…. He’s going to try to kill all of Batman’s allies.

The talk then shifted from Batman to the Dark titles. In the upcoming issues of one of my favorite titles, Justice League Dark, Frankenstein from Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE will join the team. Also when the current story arc ends a new story arc titled The Death of Magic will come into effect. Lemire said, “The story arc will have permanent ramifications to the team.” Next up was Swamp Thing. As Swamp Thing is trapped in the twisted Rotworld he will come upon the warped Batcave. In which he will do battle with Man-Bat but the corrupted person is not Batman or Dr. Kirk Langstrom, but as Lemire said, “One of the females.” Batwoman or Batgirl perhaps?

Next up were the Edge titles. All Star Western became the talk of the town when it was stated that everybody’s favorite scarred bounty hunter Jonah Hex will travel to the year 2050 and team up with Adam Strange. Then Jordan talked about Suicide Squad, which I love, he stated that the upcoming story arc will be very, “Deadshot centric” along with various backgrounds for each member being fleshed out. He also talked about the interpersonal conflicts becoming even more heated. Then it was time for the newest Edge title Team 7 to take center stage. It was revealed that the upcoming villain Eclipso will make his first New 52 appearance in the Pages of Team 7. The last of the Edge titles to be discussed was Deathstroke. Now I haven’t been reading Deathstroke, Grifter, or Savage Hawkman since Rob Liefeld came on, but I did before hand, and now that he’s gone and can start reading some good stories again. Jordan wants to make Slade Wilson AKA Deathstroke more than just “a killer with a gun” but he wants to show the strategic side of him. The upcoming story arc will have a very heavy focus on tactics.

Lastly they talked about my favorite Green Lantern book on the stands right now, Green Lantern: New Guardians. The upcoming arc will focus on Kyle Rayner trying to gain the powers of the 7 lanterns to become the next white lantern. He will have help from Carol Ferris AKA Star Sapphire along the way.

That was about it from the New 52 panel.

What is your favorite New 52 book out right now?

Out of the six stories that will be told in the movie, which one looks like the most interesting to you? Below the new spots you'll find a rundown of each story told in the book.

Here's a breakdown of each story told in the novel:

The novel consists of six nested stories that take the reader from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or observed) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last are interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel "goes back" in time, "closing" each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.

The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing

Pacific Ocean, circa 1850. Adam Ewing, an American notary's account of a voyage home from the remote Chatham Islands, east of New Zealand. The next character discovers this story as a diary on his patron's bookshelf.

Letters from Zedelghem

Zedelgem, Belgium, 1931. Robert Frobisher, a penniless young English musician, finds work as an amanuensis to a composer living in Belgium. This story is saved in the form of letters to his friend (and implied lover) Rufus Sixsmith, which the next character discovers after meeting Sixsmith.

Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery.

Buenas Yerbas, California, 1975. Luisa Rey, a journalist, investigates reports of corruption and murder at a nuclear power plant. The next character is sent this story in the mail, in the form of a manuscript for a novel.

The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish

United Kingdom, early 21st century. Timothy Cavendish, a vanity press publisher, flees the brothers of his gangster client. He gets confined against his will in a nursing home from which he cannot escape. The next character watches a movie dramatisation of this story.

An Orison of Sonmi~451

Nea So Copros (Korea), dystopian near future. Sonmi~451, a genetically-engineered fabricant (clone) server at Papa Song's diner (a proxy for large fast-dining chains), is interviewed before her execution after she rebels against the capitalist totalitarian society that created and exploited her kind. The next character watches Sonmi's story projected holographically in an "orison," a futuristic recording device.

Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After

Hawaii, post-apocalyptic distant future. Zachry, a tribesman living a primitive life after most of humanity dies during "the Fall," is visited by Meronym, a member of the last remnants of technologically-advanced civilization. This story is told when the protagonist is an old man, to seemingly random strangers around a camp-fire.

Panel:
Director Kimberly Peirce
Producer Kevin Misher
Chloe Moretz (Carrie)
Julianne Moore (Margaret)

Here's a little summary and some thoughts on what went down during the Carrie panel for all those who don't want to sift through the fan fawning for all the little interesting tidbits.

The Carrie panel kicked off with a teaser trailer. The footage was short, especially for a film that has already wrapped principal photography -- considering the amount of footage we saw from films like Iron Man 3 and The Lone Ranger at SDCC this past year while both films were still in the middle of production. While the Carrie trailer was a tease in every sense -- simply zooming across Chamberlain, Maine in a trail of fire and destruction, revealing Moretz as the title character covered in blood -- as the panel went on I realized that it showcased a couple of very important elements that clearly set this apart from Brian DePalma's 1976 film.

It's inevitable for this new take on Carrie to be compared to the first big-screen adaptation of the famous Stephen King novel, which starred Sissy Spacek as the troubled teen with telekinetic rage. The subject was brought up again and again with the term "remake" being thrown around quite a bit by the fans asking questions.

Though all on the panel expressed a great respect for what had been done in the original film, they didn't lift anything from it. Peirce's love of the source material and their desire to "bring the book to life now and in a modern way" is what will give fans of the book and the now equally iconic 1976 film more to chew on. It was pointed out that the destruction of the town is more widespread in the book than the original film. The teaser for the new Carrie clearly put their ability to capture that larger scope of the book on display -- which was simply impossible in 1976 with the budget they had and the technology available at the time.

Another exciting aspect of the new Carrie is the fact that the title role of the bullied teen is played by an actual teen this time around. Obviously the Oscar-nominated performances of both leads are nothing to downplay, but it's just interesting to note that Spacek was 26 at the time she filmed the original. A real teen playing a teen (15 year old Chloe Moretz) is an extra bit of added authenticity for the audience to connect with.

Here's some other interesting facts that were pointed during the panel:

  • Peirce very roughly estimates that about 1,000 gallons of fake blood was used throughout the production of the film. Various consistencies of blood were tested through exhaustive R and D.
  • A rumor was cleared up about Moretz's involvement in designing and constructing the dress for the movie. Moretz chuckled and clarified that she helped make "a dress" (one of I'm sure countless pieces that were used)  but had no hand in the design.
  • Concerning the usage of split screen, Peirce teased that it's "Yet to be seen."
  • There was no method attempt at a dysfunctional relationship between Moore and Moretz, they said they kept it fun on set, since "the mother daughter relationship is the heart of our movie." Moore added,

"The more connected you are as people, the more connected you are as actors."

I think producer Kevin Misher summed up their goal for this adaptation best, explaining that they hope the film is a "metaphor for what is going on today," adding, "Hopefully it's not just a nostalgia trip." I think those 'nostalgia trip' movies are what leave smarter audiences feeling let down after watching a remake or even certain direct sequels. I'm excited to see Carrie introduced to a whole new audience and to see King's book realized on screen more fully.
