Fran Kranz Joins Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba in THE DARK TOWER

0

Fran Kranz, one of Joss Whedon's go-to actors who you might recognize from Dollhouse, The Cabin in The Woods, or Much Ado About Nothing, has joined the growing cast of The Dark Tower.

The film adaptation of Stephen King's series of novels already has Idris Elba locked for gunslinger Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as the evil Man in Black, Tom Taylor as the young Jake Chambers, Jackie Earle Haley as Richard Sayre, and Abbey Lee as Tirana. We already knew that the movie would not be a straight adaptation of the first book in the series, and Kranz's casting further confirms that fact: according to THR, he's playing Pimli, who doesn't even show up until the seventh book in the series.

I've only read the first novel, The Gunslinger, so I'm a little out of my depth here, but this character is described as "the right-hand man of the Man in Black," so it appears Kranz will be appearing in a supporting capacity. He's worked really well in roles like that before, and I can easily see him offering some comic relief alongside McConaughey. I know a lot of big Dark Tower fans who are worried about the way they're handling this adaptation, but I'm glad to see Kranz getting more high-profile work. If you've read the books, what do you think about him as Pimli?

Nikolaj Arcel is directing, and The Dark Tower hits theaters on February 23, 2017.

I AM LEGEND Almost Had Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ridley Scott On Board

Back when I Am Legend came out, I thought it was a pretty good movie. My friend, however, did not. He was one of the guys that had actually read I Am Legend prior to the film's release and was disappointed in the lack of follow through with the original story.

Rejected Film Ideas leads me to believe my friend would've been a bit more satisfied with Ridley Scott's retelling, although after reading the book, I feel like it'd be very difficult to fully adapt without giving too much away. Hear a little bit of the original plan, and how it fell apart below.

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg Reteam For DADDY'S HOME Sequel

I didn't bother seeing Daddy's Home, the dad vs. step-dad comedy that starred Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, but apparently enough people did go check it out that a sequel has been given the greenlight. Deadline reports that Ferrell and Wahlberg — who evidently like working together after this and The Other Guys — are coming back for the untitled sequel, while Sean Anders and John Morris will return to write the script and Anders will be back to direct once again.

The outlet points out that the original movie inexplicably made more money overseas than any other Will Ferrell film thus far, which seems kind of crazy to me. But I guess the premise of fathers and step-fathers facing off is more relatable to international audiences than '70s television anchors, ABA basketball players, NASCAR drivers, or absurd figure skaters. Will you watch the Daddy's Home sequel? Leave your plot pitches in the comments below...I want to see if you guys can come up with a premise more entertaining than what will be in the actual movie.

Joaquin Phoenix Sought To Play Jesus in Mary Magdalene Biopic

Here's some weird/interesting casting news. Deadline says the makers of an upcoming Mary Magdalene biopic (starring Rooney Mara) are eyeballing Joaquin Phoenix to play the role of Jesus of Nazareth. The movie is being produced by the same people who made The King's Speech, so I'm guessing the tone of this film will not be satire.

I'm not saying it's a bad choice, as Phoenix has really embodied some serious roles in his career! He's done some goofy stuff as of late, so maybe this is a move for him to attempt to dive back into more serious roles? I can picture it, but I just don't actually see it working out. What about you? Do you think Phoenix would make a good Christ?

GAME OF THRONES Opening Recut With Old Man Eating Soup

This Sunday, I'll finally (probably) be (most likely) stopping posting crappy Game of Thrones parodies to give you that desperate fix you need. Until then, Clickhole had me laughing so hard watching this recut intro of a man eating soup whilst the intro plays! If this doesn't make you laugh, at least smile at the fact that you'll finally get some real Westeros action on Sunday.

Sigourney Weaver Says Neill Blomkamp's ALIEN Sequel Will Be "Worth The Wait"

When Ridley Scott decided to make the Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant his next movie, that put Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 in a holding pattern. Blomkamp's movie is set after the events of James Cameron's Aliens and reportedly ignores the other sequels in the franchise, and Scott wanted to take a crack at making another bridge movie between Prometheus and the first Alien before someone else came in and told another story that takes place further down the timeline.

Now Sigourney Weaver, who will be working with Blomkamp on Alien 5, has given a little update about the movie (via Aggressive Comix) and she says it'll be "worth the wait."

"Well, I think it is. Ridley asked Neill not to make our Alien 'til after Prometheus 2. [Ridley] wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an amazing script, and Neill and I are really excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we didn't do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait."

That sounds promising, but honestly, who the hell knows what's going on with this franchise? Scott has also said he wants to make two more movies after Alien: Covenant that continue the bridge to the original Alien, so is 20th Century Fox really going to release Covenant, and then Blomkamp's sequel, and then two more prequel movies that are follow-ups to Covenant? It just seems like a nightmare for the marketing department; while I know you all can keep this stuff straight (because you care enough about movies to read this website), it seems like a very difficult task to keep things clear for the general public. Though, admittedly, Disney is going to be a trailblazer in that department with the Star Wars movies bouncing back and forth between the regular saga and the Star Wars Story spin-offs and prequels, so maybe Fox thinks they can do something similar. We'll have to wait and see how it all works out.

Tim Burton-Themed Bar Opening In NYC

I've seen it all. New York City is soon to be home to Beetle House, a Tim Burton-themed bar. Slashfilm says the establishment, which comes from the same guys who created a Will Ferrell-themed bar last year, will embody the feel of Burton's films...but probably not Batman. The whole idea — even for the most average of Burton fans like myself — sounds pretty cool. The drink list gives you a feel of the place. It all sounds good...but man, look at those NYC drink prices!

CAFE SOCIETY Trailer: Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart Travel Through 1930s Hollywood

Here's the first international trailer for Woody Allen's newest movie, Cafe Society. The film will open this year's Cannes Film Festival, and this looks like it could be one of Allen's most enjoyable films since Midnight in Paris. It has a great cast, including Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Corey Stoll, Paul Schneider, and more, and it's set in 1930s Hollywood. I liked Hail, Caesar!, which was the Coen Brothers' recent trip through Hollywood's Golden Age, so I'll be interested to see how this stacks up.

You Have My Attention: Dwayne Johnson Officially Joins JUMANJI Remake

0
0

Just a few days ago, it was rumored that Central Intelligence stars Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart were up for roles in the remake of Jumanji, and now one half of that duo has officially joined the cast. Johnson posted the following message on Instagram confirming his involvement with the movie:

It's OFFICIAL: Love this script! Big movie news that me and my canine gal Shang are excited to share;) To produce, create and deliver original properties to fans like HBO's #ballers to this summer's #CentralIntelligence is one of the best parts of my job. But to take great properties that are beloved worldwide like #BAYWATCH and #RAMPAGE and have the opportunity reimagine their stories in dope new ways to a whole new generation is truly an honor. It's official. We'll produce and deliver to a whole new generation a title that I love and is one of my all time favs: There's games you play for fun... then there's games that change your life. JUMANJI Working on edging up an already very good script with my @sevenbucksprod team. Up next is meeting with our producer Matt Tolmach and director Jake Kasdan. Shooting starts this fall. Promise to deliver something cool and special.. and not screw the whole damn thing up;). As always I'll keep you posted. Casting this should be fun! #JUMANJI #JungleLife #JustPressStart #SONYPictures

A photo posted by therock (@therock) on

It's unclear how closely the remake is going to stick to the story of the Robin Williams movie, but I assume they'll keep the basic premise (kids find and play a board game that releases jungle creatures into their world) and change just about everything else. After all, this script was originally written by the writers of the first movie before getting a rewrite from a couple of other writers, so I can't imagine that it'll be the same story beat-for-beat with different actors playing the roles.

Johnson is always an intriguing screen presence, but I have to admit: I'm interested right now, but if Kevin Hart ends up coming on board, my interest in this project is going to nosedive.

Jake Kasdan (Zero Effect, Orange County, Bad Teacher) is directing, and this movie has a release date of July 28, 2017.

GAME OF THRONES Might End Up With Even Fewer Episodes Than We Thought

0
0

First up, in case you hadn't already heard, HBO has officially renewed Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, and Veep for new seasons that will air in 2017. That's obviously good news if you're a fan of those shows, so raise a glass to celebrate another year of (hopefully) quality television.

Now, on to the matter at hand. About a week ago, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said they guessed they had about thirteen more episodes to go after season six before the series came to an end. Now, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they're saying that number may have changed:

"We realized we'd probably catch the books when we spent several days with George [R.R. Martin] in Santa Fe in 2013, discussing the future of the book series and the television series. George's schedule is very much his own, as it should be for a novelist. But we're locked into a set schedule — a new season every year. In the beginning, we hoped that if the show worked, we'd get seven seasons to tell the tale. Seven kingdoms, seven gods, seven books — seven felt like a lucky number. The actual messiness of storytelling might not be quite that numerologically elegant, but we're looking at somewhere between 70 and 75 hours before the credits roll for the last time."

As of now, the show has officially been greenlit for season seven, but there were rumors that HBO would want to split the remaining episodes into two shortened seasons. If the showrunners end up going with only 70 episodes for the series, that means there are only going to be ten more episodes after the season six finale, which HBO could either air as a regular seventh season or split however it wants. Two seasons of five and five seems possible, and since the show is becoming increasingly ambitious to shoot, that seems like it might give them more time to bring the show to a close in a way that will please everyone.

There are still a lot of possibilities floating around, but they're "writing the final act now," so one would assume we'll soon hear more details from HBO about how the massively successful show will come to an end.

Watch: Iron Man's Evolution in TV and Film

Burger Fiction is known for supercut videos, but they've also created some cool "evolution of" videos in the past, including ones for Batman and Superman. Now they've turned to the Marvel Universe, and giving that same treatment to Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. I suspect we'll be seeing one for Captain America from them sometime soon, considering those two heroes face off in Civil War in just a couple of weeks. Enjoy:

I'm still having trouble believing that someone has turned this into a real movie, but here we are with the latest international trailer for The Ring vs. The Grudge crossover film, titled Sadako vs. Kayako. What began as an April Fools Day joke has become a very real project, and though there are some pretty ridiculous moments in this trailer (the final sequence in particular), it looks like it might actually give fans a fun ride. Video: 10 Superhero Movie Easter Eggs You May Not Have Noticed

ScreenRant is back with a new video that points out easter eggs you might not have noticed before in superhero movies. Their title claims these references are "hidden," but I'd really like to know what their definition of "hidden" is, because the first one on their list — J. Jonah Jameson talking about Doctor Strange in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 — isn't hidden at all. "Hidden" implies that you actually have to do some searching, not that it's openly presented to you as lines of dialogue in a movie. Same thing with the Catwoman reference later in the video. Get it together, guys.

But there are a few bits that are actually cool pieces of trivia you might not know about, so check it out below:

Awesome Cosplay Featured in Emerald City Comicon Music Videos

We have a couple videos here from Beat Down Boogie that highlights the cosplay awesomeness that they found at Emerald City Comicon. This is an event that I’ve never been to, but I’ve heard it’s a blast from people who have attended. In the videos below, you’re gonna feast your eyes on some impressive cosplay. No joke, almost everything you will see is top-notch quality stuff!

Emerald City Comicon has been one of the best-kept secrets in cosplay. The costumes are amazing and the Seattle setting is gorgeous. The attendees mostly come from Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver but ECCC is beginning to get attention from beyond the Pacific North West. ReedPOP (promoters of New York Comicon) recently took over ECCC and are expanding its promotion.

2 New TV Spots For TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 With New Footage

0
0

We have a couple of new TV spots for you to watch for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and they feature quite a bit of new footage. There are a lot more people excited about seeing this movie than I thought there would be. I saw an extended clip from the film last week at CinemaCon which features the turtles jumping out of an airplane onto another airplane. This movie is going to have a lot of over-the-top action, and on top of that Krang, Rocksteady, and Bebop will be included. You know what? I might actually be excited about this movie had I not seen the first one. Hopefully, the sequel actually turns out better. There’s no doubt that fans of the first movie are going to love this, though.

The Ninja Turtles come into conflict with T.C.R.I. scientist Dr. Baxter Stockman with the association of the Foot Clan and the return of the Shredder, who has hired Stockman to create mutants of their own in the form of Bebop and Rocksteady and an unknown invasion above New York City. To prevent the end of the world, the turtles and their human friends April O'Neil and Vern Fenwick comes to the aid with vigilante Casey Jones.

Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, and Noel Fisher have reprised their roles as Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo. Johnny Knoxville is providing the voice of Leonardo again. The movie also sees the return of Megan Fox as April O'Neil, Will Arnett as Vernon Fenwick, and William Fichtner as Eric Sacks. Some of the newcomers include Tyler Perry as scientist Baxter Stockman, WWE Star Sheamus as Rocksteady, Gary Anthony Williams as Bebop, Brittany Ishibashi as Karai, Stephen Amell as Casey Jones, and Brian Tee as Shredder.

The movie comes out on June 3rd.
