Funny Comic - What Zack Snyder's Defense for Batman V Superman Has Led To

$

Zack Snyder has always defended the collateral damage in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. I’m sure you saw one of his most recent comments in which he compared those deaths to all the deaths from the planets being destroyed in J.J. AbramsStar Wars: The Force Awakens. Well, Dorkly has released a hilarious comic strip that shows us what that defense has led to. The punch line is comedic perfection.

5 Richard Linklater Films You Have To See (If You Haven't Already)

Richard Linklater is one of my favorite filmmakers. He does his own thing while living in his home state of Texas, proving that you don't have to give in to the corporate Hollywood machine to make it as a filmmaker. Which is great news because, let's face it, LA traffic is the worst. And while his writing style isn't for everyone, it can't be denied that he's a gifted director who knows how to get authentic c performances out of his actors. So in honor of his new film, Everybody Wants Some, I've made a list of 5 films directed by Richard Linklater that you should definitely get around to seeing sometime if you haven't already.

School of Rock: So, duh. If you haven't seen this one yet, maybe you should crawl out of the hole you've been living in once in a while. Better yet, just stay there. You're a lost cause. Jack Black is at his face-melting best. Add some prep-school kids, and you've got yourself a classic.

Bernie: No, this isn't a movie about Bernie Sanders. Also starring Black, this dark comedy would fit in the "true crime" genre. It tells the story of Bernie Teide, a lovable mortician who befriends a wealthy widow. I don't want to spoil it, but believe me: if you have a twisted sense of humor (which, of course you do,) you must watch this movie. While it isn't as well-known as School of Rock, I like it just as much for totally different reasons.

Everybody Wants Some: Linklater's most recent film has been getting amazing reviews, and it's not hard to see why. This might be my favorite film he's ever done, and I'm usually not a fan of the crazy college party movies. He's perfected his craft, combining witty dialogue with hyper-realistic situations. While some have criticized his writing as "boring" and "too real," this one shows he's clearly found a sweet spot.

Dazed and Confused: This cult classic gained popularity with the stoner crowd when it was released in 1993, and is probably best enjoyed while at least moderately high. While not my favorite movie ever (see "boring" comment above), it has several moments that have gained ubiquity. For example, the line that basically made Matthew McConaughey: "That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age."

Boyhood: This film was shot over a twelve year period, which is a feat all on its own. But what I loved about it is that it's essentially a time capsule of my childhood. Linklater took extra care to examine pop culture trends during each year and tailored the script to capture the feeling of every year. (Anyone else remember waiting in a ridiculously long line to get the latest Harry Potter book?) The soundtrack alone will have you saying, "Ohhhh yeah! I loved that song!"

Bonus Round: I couldn't resist including one of my personal favorites. If you've seen the previous five and want more, you should check A Scanner Darkly, based on the Philip K. Dick novel and starring Keanu Reeves. This one's unique because they actually shot it on film and then completely animated over the top of it. Weird, right?

So there you have it. 5 (technically 6) Richard Linklater films you need to see. Obviously this is a rudimentary list, so this is just to get you started. And if you're already a Linklater veteran, what are some of your favorites?

Graceful SUPERMAN Poster Art Captures the Essence of the 1978 Film

Both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman have given us a much darker take on Superman, who is supposed to be a symbol of hope. Those film make me miss the good ol' days when that was what Superman actually represented, like in the original Richard Donner films.

Today we have a Superman print to share with you that captures the greatness of the original 1978 film. It was created by artist JC Richard, and it's called “Son of Krypton.” According to io9, this was Richard's reaction after seeing Batman v Superman. He felt "he needed a reminder of the more idealized version of the character." The artist explains:

“I’m still not sure what happened. All I remember is stumbling back to the studio in a kind of mild fury, resentful of the way this new film had treated my beloved hero. So I did as I so often do, sought immediate solace in the past, threw in the 1978 movie and filled my thoughts with Reeve, Ford, Brando, data crystals and classic suit colors. Watching Superman the Movie for the 500th time, I was again inspired by Jor-El’s sacrifice and lessons, by Pa Kent’s quiet wisdom, by Clark’s extreme kindness even when faced with personal suffering and fear. Over the course of those 2 hours everything else fell away, and Superman became a hero all over again.”

I love what he's created. It's the Superman that a lot of us grew up with. This is the true Superman hero. The poster is a signed and numbered limited edition screenprint in an edition of 200. If you want to buy one, click here.

10 Actors Who Got Drunk Before Shooting Their Movie Scenes

Have you ever wondered if an actor was really drunk during a scene they were shooting for a film? Well, ScreenRant has released an interesting video that offers a list of ten actors who actually did get drunk to shoot certain scenes. Some of the actors mentioned in the video include Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis for Black Swan, Robert Shaw for Jaws, Julie Andrews for The Sound of Music, Brad Pitt and Edward Norton for Fight Club, Johnny Depp for Rum Diary, and Margot Robbie for The Wolf of Wall Street.

After they land a role in a movie, actors always look for anything they can do to ensure they deliver the best performance they can. Whether it’s physical training, getting lost in a character’s psyche, or studying up on history, there are several methods they turn to. But sometimes, it’s as simple as getting a drink or two. Some of Hollywood’s biggest films feature sequences that involve intoxicated thespians. Here are 10 actors who got drunk to film their scenes.

Jared Leto Spent Time With Real Psychopaths to Prepare to Play The Joker in SUICIDE SQUAD

For a lot of people, the initial sting of finding out that Jared Leto was going to be playing The Joker in the DCU was swift and painful. I know, I felt it too. Then the Suicide Squad trailer hit and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief. The one thing that I forgot was that Leto takes his job as an actor very seriously and no doubt he put as much time and effort into his role as the Joker as he would any other role.

To prove that point, Leto told EW the lengths that he went to preparing for this iconic role.

"There are a lot of things. It’s probably better to not get into it but to the Joker, violence is a symphony. This is someone who gets an extreme reward from the act of violence and manipulation. Those are the songs he sings and he is very in tune with what makes people tick. I did meet with people that were experts, doctors, psychiatrists that dealt with psychopaths and people who had committed horrendous crimes, and then I spent some time with those people themselves, people who have been institutionalized for great periods of time. I guess when you take on a role, any role, you become part detective, part writer, and for me that’s my favorite time of the entire process, the discovering, the uncovering, and the building of a character. Yeah, it’s really fun.
"It was challenging but it was also fun. He has a great sense of humor, depending on who you ask. [Laughs]"

Talk about going above and beyond to get ready for a film. Fortunately for us, I think this might have given him the perspective needed to play, in my opinion, the most evil, sinister, and sadistic bad guy in literary history.

I am thoroughly ecstatic for Suicide Squad to come out on August 5th. I know I shouldn’t overhype the movie in my mind, but it is too late to turn back now. I have a feeling it will be one of the best superhero movies of the year.

Movie Studio Ran CGI Tests to Make White Actors Look Asian in GHOST IN THE SHELL

Unfortunately, the recent uproar against Hollywood’s penchant for whitewashing their movies is a completely valid one. Far too often we have seen more well-known white actors in the leading roles in movie adaptations of books, comic books, etc. that were originally another race. The only reason for this is because they feel that it will put more butts in the movie theater seats. Frankly, the practice is wrong and should be stopped.

Case in point, in 2015 we heard that Paramount was going to bring us a live-action movie of Ghost in the Shell, which is super exciting for those of us who love the manga and the animated movies. In the same breath, they announced that they had cast Scarlett Johansson as the lead character Major Mokoto Kusanagi. WHAT?!?! Needless to say, this brought out the fires of hell from fans in every country. If that isn’t blatant whitewashing, I don’t know what is. Continuing on that train of thought, pictures of Johansson were released recently, and the haters started hating again. Understandably.

This brings us to the current topic, which is, this could have been much, much worse.

Screencrush unleashed the info that a studio insider told them that Paramount did some ultra-inappropriate visual effect manipulation to try to appease the masses. Here is what they had to say:

According to multiple independent sources close to the project, Paramount and DreamWorks commissioned visual effects tests that would’ve altered Scarlett Johansson in post-production to “shift her ethnicity” and make the Caucasian actress appear more Asian in the film.
It’s the latest, and most extreme, case of “beauty work,” the new trend in Hollywood to discreetly use visual effects to tweak an actor’s appearance, making them thinner, younger or stronger. The Ghost in the Shell tests were conducted by Lola VFX, the same company that aged up (and down) Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and is considered the industry leader in so-called beauty work. Though the tests were requested by the production team, once they were developed and reviewed, the idea was rejected “immediately,” says an insider.

Screencrush reached out to Paramount, who claimed that the tests had nothing to do with Johansson.

"A test was done related to a specific scene for a background actor which was ultimately discarded. Absolutely no visual effects tests were conducted on Scarlett’s character and we have no future plans to do so."

The report goes on to say that their sources are adamant that the screen test were done on SJ and the studio is trying to deflect the fury that is headed their way once this statement is released.

I supremely dislike that the studios feel the need to bring in the biggest star instead of keeping true to the integrity of the original body of work. What makes this whole situation feel so much slimier is the fact that there are a lot of Asian actors who could have played this role. That could have brought more validity to the movie. Please don’t get me wrong, Johansson is a great actress and will probably put everything she has into this role, unfortunately this whole situation could have been avoided had they cast someone else.

We as a fandom are extremely protective of our favorite properties and feel that anyone doing an adaptation of said properties should take as much care of them as we would. In the past, casting someone against the norm has been successful due to expert care and consideration of what we as fans will think of the finished product. When that care is not taken, the project usually fails.

I certainly hope that the group responsible for Ghost in the Shell makes something so fantastic with this movie that it won’t matter who was cast as the lead. I guess only time will tell.

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart Looking to Join JUMANJI Remake

Sony Pictures is getting ready to move forward on their upcoming Jumanji remake, and they are in talks with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart to star in the movie. The two recently starred in the action comedy Central Intelligence

It really hard to imagine a Jumanji movie without Robin Williams. He was just so great in that film and perfect for the role he played. As much as I enjoy watching Johnson and Hart, I’m having a hard time accepting the fact that Jumanji is being remade with them in mind.

They aren’t confirmed for the film yet. According to Variety, the actors are both incredibly busy, and they are trying to work out their schedules so they can make this work. If they can do that they’ll most likely end up striking a deal.

The film is a new adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s original 1981 adventure book, which was awarded the Caldecott Medal. The script has been written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, based on a draft by the original writers, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The story of the original film centered on a 12-year-old boy who becomes trapped in a board game in 1969 and is released 26 years later by two kids who find the game and start to play it. As they play, the elements of the game come to life in the real world.

I imagine that the reboot will end up being a more slapstick comedy adventure kind of film because it looks like that’s what Johnson and Hart do when they makes these kinds of films.

Johnson’s upcoming projects include Rampage, San Andres 2, Moana, Fast 8, Baywatch, and Ballers. Hart’s upcoming film projects include The Untouchables, Ride Along 2, The Secret Lives of Pets, and Captain Underpants.

Jake Kasdan is on board to direct with the pic set to bow on July 28, 2017.

J.J. Abrams Reveals Big Info on Rey’s Parents in STAR WARS Then Takes It Back

$

There’s been a lot of discussion about Rey’s parentage in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Most people seem to think that her dad is Luke Skywalker, but that’s a theory I’ve never really gotten behind. There’s also a theory that Rey could be Han and Leia’s kid. Well, both of those theories could be wrong.

During a Q&A with Chris Rock at the Tribeca Film Festival, a kid named Kyle in the audience asked J.J. Abrams who Rey's parents were. Abrams didn’t come right out and give an answer but he did make it pretty clear that it’s not Luke, Han, or Rey. He said:

"Rey's parents are not in Episode VII. So I can't possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too."

So since no one from the first Star Wars film is Rey’s parent, who could it be!? I’m sticking to my theory that she is related to Obi-Wan. Maybe Obi-Wan is her grandfather? I believe at one point Obi-Wan had a relationship with the Duchess Satine of Mandalore. Then, of course, her parents could be completely new characters not related to anyone from Star Wars lore, but what’s so fun or interesting about that!?

After Abrams’ statement blew up online, he clarified it in an interview with Entertainment Weekly saying:

“What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world.”

So does this put all of the other theories back on the table? Or is Abrams just throwing out damage control? Maybe he said too much the first time around so now he’s backtracking to stir up the pot again. I see these as two very different statements. I have to go with the first comment he made because he was put on the spot with a kid, and I think he had a lapse in judgment and actually gave something away that he didn’t mean to. What do you think?

James Gunn Says GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Is a Bigger Film but Also More Intimate

James Gunn is a wonderfully talented filmmaker who wowed audiences with Guardians of the Galaxy, and we're expecting him to wow fans again with the upcoming sequel. During a recent Q&A at the Atlanta Film Festival, the director talked about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and how it’s not only going to be a bigger film, but it’s also going to be more intimate. He said:

"It's been a lot of hard work, honestly. It's a much bigger film. Also at the same time, a much more intimate film, more character-driven in certain ways, so it's just a lot of work. And everybody has been on their game."

Gunn went on to praise a couple of the new actors joining the fold, including Kurt Russell, who is most likely playing Star-Lord’s dad, and Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis. In regards to these characters, he says:

"The new cast members... Kurt Russell has been incredible. And Pom Klementieff, who plays a new Guardian [Mantis] has been just, she blows me away. She's really been perfect."

Gunn also went on to talk about Rocket Raccoon, who has become a fan favorite character, and how Rocket is the spirit behind the movies.

“Rocket is my inner child. The whole movie to me was based on Rocket. Marvel came to me with this movie, I thought ‘you guys are crazy,’ this sounds like an insane idea. I was driving home from the meeting and I’m like, ‘OK, let’s say there was really a talking raccoon. How would that exist? And it was really that scene is everything, GUARDIANS was built out of that, so I have a very strong emotional connection to Rocket…. Rocket is really a combination of a lot of people. I write the character. My brother Sean does all the acting on set. Bradley [Cooper] comes and does the voice. We have a whole team of animators who help with the acting there. So there’s a lot of control I have, a lot more attachment to Rocket and to Groot in that respect.”

On top of telling good stories and properly developing characters, Gunn is also great at mixing hilarious, smart humor into his stories. They guy knows comedy, and he delivers great comedic beats. When asked about movies like Suicide Squad and Deadpool emulating his style of humor he says:

“If it’s sincere, I think that’s great. For me, honestly, the reason why GUARDIANS was successful, and I believe the reason a movie like DEADPOOL (2016) was successful is because we really are sincere about it. This is the real stuff. Everything in this movie is something I believe in. I believe in those characters. Some people think I’m crazy. Because I love that raccoon. I mean, as much as I would love my own child. Really, it’s a little bit insane. But I love those characters so much, and I love that story so much, and I love that I was a kid that was not a normal kid and felt very alone. And luckily I had some artists out there, who I could listen to their music or watch their films, whether it was David Cronenberg movies or Alice Cooper’s music, where I thought ‘goddamn I’m not the only weirdo in the world.’ And to be able to make a movie that speaks to those people, that speaks to people that feel like they’re alone or like they’re outcasts or that don’t have friends or have screwed-up families and need that connection with other living beings, that they can feel some small part of that through seeing GUARDIANS, that is why I make the movies. And that is the only reason I make them.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to be released on May 5th, 2017, and I can’t wait to see what the sequel gives us.

Deadline is reporting that Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) has been cast as Peter Parker’s high school nemesis. He’s not a supervillain or anything, just kind of a bully at school. In another report, The Wrap reports that actress Laura Harrier (One Life to Live) has also joined the cast in a “significant role.”

The actors will join Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and actress/singer Zendaya who is taking on a key role in the story.

The upcoming film was written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. It is set after the events in Captain America: Civil War, and it will focus on Peter Parker’s high school days. The film is also said to have a classic John Hughes movie feel to it.

The movie is set to be released on July 7th, 2017.

Harley Quinn's Classic Jester Suit Spotted in Suicide Squad Trailer! Does She Wear It?

Last month we learned that Margot Robbie tried on various different costumes for her version of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. One of those costumes included the iconic court jester costume that the character wore in her first appearance in Batman: The Animated Series.

Well, it looks like that costume actually made it into the movie as it was spotted in the trailer for the film. The Easter egg was discovered by eobardthawne42. The red and black jester costume was spotted laying on the ground behind a black container. You can see it in the photo below. Under the photos, I include some speculation about the costume and how it might fit into this scene.

harley-quinns-classic-jester-suit-easter-egg-spotted-in-suicide-squad-trailer2

A lot of fans were disappointed that Harley Quinn wouldn’t be sporting the outfit in the movie. But with this latest discovery, maybe there’s a chance she could put it on for a scene or two. That would awesome!

It makes me wonder if Harley is actually wearing the jester costume early on in this scene. In the last trailer that was released, we see Quinn putting on her “Daddy’s Little Monster” shirt. It’s the scene where we get a look at her in her bra and everyone is staring at her. I think there’s a good chance she showed up to this little gathering in the jester outfit and then took it off and threw it on the ground and continued to get changed. Or maybe it's an outfit that was in that box in front of her and she looks at it, chooses not to wear it, and tosses it aside. What do you think? I included the trailer below.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Will Have Things You've Never Seen in Any Movie Before

Marvel pulled off some awesome things with the first Ant-Man movie, and it was fun to see him back in action in Captain America: Civil War. Seeing him in that movie got me pumped up to see what they will do for Ant-Man and The Wasp. According to director Peyton Reed, it’s going to feature things that we’ve never seen in a movie before. During an interview with ComicBook.com the director said:

"We've actually been holed up in the room writing the movie — myself, Paul Rudd, Adam McKay, Andrew Barrer and Gab Ferrari. So we're formulating the whole structure of the movie. And I can't really tell you too much yet, except there are going to be things in this movie that you’ve never seen in any movie before. It's going to be nuts!"

When asked if the sequel would be a heist film like the first one, he said:

"There will be some...there will be a little taste of heistiness, but it's ... a little bit of different direction for Ant-Man."

The director's statement about the film being unlike anything we’ve ever seen before in a movie is very intriguing. What exactly is that going to entail? I really don’t want to have to wait until July 6th, 2018 to find out, but I don’t really have a choice, do I?

The Next X-Men Film After APOCALYPSE is Rumored to Be THE DARK PHOENIX

$

It doesn’t sound like 20th Century Fox and Bryan Singer aren’t going to waste any time jumping back into The Dark Phoenix Saga. A younger version of Jean Grey is being introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse. The character is being played by Game of ThronesSophie Turner, and according to Heroic Hollywood's inside sources, the next X-Men film will revolve around Jean Grey’s Dark Phoenix story arc.

There was an attempt at telling this story arc in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, but it spectacularly failed. Since then, the whole X-Men franchise has basically been rebooted due to the time traveling events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, so now that story can be retold. Producer Simon Kinberg previously explained:

“I think everything that hasn’t been told from First Class and Days of Future Past is up for grabs going forward, so it would absolutely be a story we could tell in a different way.”

Then Turner recently revealed that her character in Apocalypse already realizes that something dark is growing inside of her, so it sounds like they are already building up to the Dark Pheonix in her first introduction into the franchise. She says:

“And Jean she has not only has her telekenisis and her telepathy but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn’t quite know what it is.”

With director Singer at the helm, I’m sure that he’ll tell this story right this time around. For those of you not familiar with the story here’s a basic rundown:

The Phoenix Force consumes Jean Grey and with the manipulation of the Hellfire Club's Mastermind she is driven mad. The Phoenix Force becomes the Dark Phoenix and consumes the power of a star and destroys an entire solar system before sacrificing herself to save the universe from mass destruction.

There’s no confirmation from the studio that this will be the X-Men movie, so of course this is a rumor for now. It definitely sounds like there’s a strong possibility this could be the case, though.

20 Great Movie Scenes the Actors Hated Shooting

$

Believe it or not, making movies is hard work! A lot of the actors cast in these movies are put through some very strenuous situations to get the shots that the director is going for. ScreenRant has released a fun new video that lists 20 great scenes that the actors hated shooting. Some of the movies on the list include Captain America: Civil War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Exorcist, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Evil Dead, and more.

It’s been said that pain is temporary, but film is forever. Perhaps that’s why some of cinema’s best scenes come from making actors suffer. Whether it’s being put in a barrel with raw fish or having to eat it, saying something nasty about another character or sharing a sex scene with them, there are plenty of things that can make an actor uncomfortable on set. If they’re lucky the scene can be done in just a few takes, but some of these scenes can take literally months.

J.K. Simmons Discusses Playing Commissioner Gordon in JUSTICE LEAGUE

$

A lot of fans were hoping that Bryan Cranston would be cast as Commissioner Gordon in the DCEU, but when J.K. Simmons ended being cast in the role last month there weren’t really any complaints. Fans seemed to be open to the idea of Simmons taking on the role of the iconic DC character. I think it’s a great choice and that he’s going to bring something to Gordon that we’ve never seen before.

During an interview with Collider, Simmons opened up about playing the character and what he’s doing to prepare to play him:

"Well, to read the comics, yes, absolutely. I’m still a couple of months out from doing that and I have two other films before then, so I haven’t gotten started on that. Obviously, a lot of really wonderful actors have played that character previously, and most of them I saw at the time the movies came out, never imagining that I would be doing the same thing. So, I can’t say that I don’t have some impression of that character in my head that’s based on what I saw, but I’m not planning on going back and watching any of the other films.
“I’m just planning on learning as much as I can about him through the comics and getting my feet wet in the first movie, and then hopefully continuing on from there. I take this from my days doing theater. If I was doing a musical, I would never listen to the cast album because I wanted to do my version of something. I’m sure there will be differences and similarities with what Gary Oldman or Pat Hingle have done before, but I’m just going to try to do my take on it and be as informed as I can about the rich history of the Batman universe, going into it."

The actor then went on to compare Gordon to his previous comic book movie role, J. Jonah Jameson from Sam Rami’s Spider-Man trilogy. According to Simmons, the only similarity they have is a mustache.

"There are easy comparisons to make. I wasn’t a big comic book reading kid, so I did a fair amount of reading when I was playing Jameson, who was very much the comic relief in those movies. Even in the comics, he was a blowhard who was all bark and very rarely bite. My understanding, from what I’ve learned so far about Commissioner Gordon, is that he’s the older guy with the mustache who relates with our hero in a certain way. Other than that, it’s a vastly different character and much more of a stronger, impactful character in the DC universe."

I wonder how long of a run Gordon will have the DCEU. I know he was cast for the Justice League movie, but I can't help but think that we’ll also see him in any solo Batman films that are made as well. I’m looking forward to him sharing scenes with Ben Affleck’s Batman.
