DreamWorks Animation has released the first image from Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Netflix series Trollhunters. The filmmaker has been developing this project for over five years already, so it's great to see it actually moving forward. The project started out as a feature film adaptation of the young adult novel that del Toro worked on with author Daniel Kraus.

DreamWorks TROLLHUNTERS will unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around the residents of the fictional suburb of Arcadia who make a startling discovery that the world beneath their hometown is as vast and mind-blowing as anything on the surface. A global must-see viewing event for the entire family, DreamWorks TROLLHUNTERS will bring viewers of all ages around the world into the rich and creative mind of Guillermo del Toro.

This sounds and looks like it could be a great series and I'm looking forward to seeing some actual footage from it. When talking about the story in a previous interview, the filmmaker said:

"I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary. It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid. Normally, kids are idealized in animated films. But the growing pains, married with the notion that there is a world right next to us that is completely plagued by creatures of ancient lore, it's thematically fitting with the rest of my stuff."

The series will be released sometime this year.

I was planning on listing all of the R2-D2-related gear we've posted on GeekTyrant over the years, but after finding twelve examples with no end in sight, I just gave up. The little droid has inspired countless fan-created items and pieces of merchandise over the years, including bowls, fridges, a Volkswagen bus, an airplane, felt handbags, carry-on luggage, a jack-o-lantern, wedding rings, can coolers, socks, pizza cutters, and surfboards, just to name a few.

Cillian Murphy Joins Christopher Nolan's DUNKIRK

Christopher Nolan’s new movie Dunkirk is getting a well-rounded cast. I am always excited to see what Nolan is going to do next and this project sounds like it will be a good one. Things are only going to get better now that Nolan alum Cillian Murphy has been added to the cast. Murphy will be rounding out an already stellar cast consisting of Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branaugh, Mark Rylance, and two newcomers to the movie world, Fionn Whitehead and some kid named Harry Styles (yes, really).

Nolan's film "chronicles the WWII evacuation of Dunkirk during Operation Dynamo, the British military operation that saved the lives of 330,000 Allied soldiers who were surrounded by German forces."

The whole evacuation lasted many days and was much more dramatic than this little blurb lets on. I am looking forward to seeing what Nolan does with this story. I think he is one of the few writer/directors out there that can do this piece of world history justice. Nolan has also brought in composer Hans Zimmer and Interstellar cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema to help him bring this story to life.

Dunkirk will be released on July 21, 2017.

Inspired by a conversation with Trick 'r Treat and Krampus director Michael Dougherty, writer/director Chris McQuarrie just shared a cool story on Twitter about a time he visited Devil's Tower in Wyoming, and I wanted to pass it along to you in case you don't follow him on social media. You probably know McQuarrie as the writer of The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun, Valkyrie, Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher, and Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (and the director of the latter two). I won't bother with any more preamble — here's the story:

When Mad Max: Fury Road won the Academy Award for best sound editing, I admit I was a little surprised. The way I remembered it, the movie's soundscape could basically be summed up in one loud engine rumble and a handful of gunshots. But this supercut of the film's sound effects from Zackery Ramos-Taylor does a nice job of showcasing the range of sounds that come throughout the movie. Check it out below:

New Video For THE PHOENIX INCIDENT Focuses on Another UFO Abductee

Another video has been released featuring some footage which is a part of sci-fi UFO mystery The Phoenix Incident. The film is about the weird true-life UFO sighting event that happened in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997.

The footage you see here focuses on a man named Mitch Adams, who, in addition to Jacob Reynolds, is part of a group of four people that mysteriously disappeared during the UFO incident. It gives us a look at the type of person that Adams was.

Blurring the line between fiction and reality, the fact based, sci-fi thriller revolves around a military conspiracy and the controversial missing person’s case surrounding the infamous 1997 event. With the support of the victims’ families, along with classified military documentation, cockpit recordings, Air Force pilot interviews, actual FLIR footage, and first-hand recovered video evidence, The Phoenix Incident exposes the military’s engagement with extraterrestrial contact, and the collateral damage of 4 civilians.

The movie was written and directed by Keith Arem (Call of Duty, Titanfall, Saints Row, Tony Hawk Pro Skater).

The Phoenix Incident will be released in select U.S. cities and on VOD on April 8th.

Here it is! The incredible first teaser trailer for Lucasfilm's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story! This movie looks absolutely badass in every way! There is so much stuff going on in this trailer, fans are going to have a lot of fun dissecting the hell out of it. There are so many nods to so many things that we will recognize from the original Star Wars trilogy. This is going to blow minds.

Just like the first time I saw the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this thing brought tears of happiness and excitement. It looks like director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) has pulled off something astonishing with this film. Even before The Force Awakens came out I said I was slightly more excited for this Rogue One film, and right now I can hardly contain that excitement. I'm exploding with adrenaline!

The film takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and it tells the story of unlikely heroes who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. The actors in this film include Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, and Forest Whitaker.

Rogue One will be released on December 16th, 2016.

Netflix Aquires DEATH NOTE Feature Film Adaptation

Those of you who are excited about the live-action adaptation of the manga Death Note will be happy to hear that Netflix is in final negotiations to pick it up as part of their feature film slate.

The film is being directed by Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest), and Nat Wolf (Paper Towns) is set to star in the lead role. For those who don't know, the story follows a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name. This discovery leads him down the road where he wants to cleanse the world of evil with this newfound power.

We’ve previously learned that this film is going to be rated R, and producer Roy Lee has explained that it “will be one of the first manga adaptations that feels very grounded but still has fantastical elements.” I’m incredibly stoked about this movie as Wingard is a very talented director and Wolf is a fantastic talented young actor. Then there’s Netflix, which is a perfect fit for a project like this.

If you’re not that familiar with the property, here’s a description of the story:

Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal...or his life? Light tests the boundaries of the Death Note powers as L and the police begin to close in. Luckily Light's father is the head of the Japanese National Police Agency and leaves vital information about the case lying around the house. With access to his father's files, Light can keep one step ahead of the authorities. But who is the strange man following him, and how can Light guard against enemies whose names he doesn't know?

Check Out This Custom Built Life-Size AT-ST From STAR WARS

I love it when passionate Star Wars fans show their love for the franchise by creating films, art, props, costumes, and other stuff. This life size AT-ST was captured on film by Mr. Kernish. He’s not the builder of it, though. According to The Verge, the person who built it did not want to be identified. I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t want to take credit for this impressive awesomeness! He must be a pretty humble dude who really just made this for himself.

As you’ll see in the video, the turrets on the AT-ST move, and it can even make laser sounds. The electronics in the vehicle are powered by a couple of solar panels that he installed on the entry door at the top. One of the coolest things about this is that the creator created a plaque that identifies it as the “Tempest Scout 2,” which is the specific AT-ST that Chewbacca hijacks during the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi

Tom Hiddleston on KONG: SKULL ISLAND Being a “New Reconception of the Mythology”

$

It’s hard to believe that it’s been eleven years since Peter Jackson released his King Kong. Unfortunately, it ended up being a disappointing film, so it’s a good thing Legendary Pictures is taking it on and kickstarting a whole new franchise with Kong: Skull Island

The film stars Tom Hiddleston as he leads a team of explorers into the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes. This adventure is said to take place in the 1970s and will take these explorers deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. It will also honor "the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline."

During an interview with EW, Hiddleston opened up about the movie a bit saying that it’s going to be spectacular and epic. He explained:

“I don’t want to spoil too much… But it’s a whole new re-conception of the mythology. It essentially follows a group of disparate travelers and explorers and soldiers who travel to an undiscovered island in the South Pacific. And it’s set in a time period where you could conceive that there are still undiscovered places on the earth. What they find on the island is surprising, and then every character has a very different response to it. It’s going to be spectacular and epic, but also the human drama is kind of interesting as well.”

Over the past few months the film has been shooting in Hawaii, Australia, and Vietnam, and he went on to share his thoughts on working with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts saying that he had an extraordinary idea for the movie. He also talks about his fellow co-stars saying, “We had maybe the most diverse and talented cast I think I’ve ever worked with as a whole.”

This is the first film of a King Kong franchise that will eventually crossover with Godzilla in Godzilla Vs. King Kong. Kong: Skull Island also stars Brie Larson, Toby Kebbell, Tom Wilkinson, John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, Corey Hawkins, and John C. Reilly. It’s set to be released on March 10th, 2017, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

I’ve got an incredibly fun set of photos here featuring a family cosplaying the main characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The family costs of Victor, Julianne, and their daughter, Baby-8. The photos you see here were taken by photographer Robert Lance, and they were posted on their Facebook page, The Real Finn and Rey of Utah. The force is truly strong in this family, and it’s awesome that they are having so much fun with this.

This GHOSTBUSTERS Ecto Containment Unit Fuse Box Cover Concept is Brilliant

"Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by dickless here."

Dave's Geek Ideas is the brains behind the creation of this concept for a Ghostbusters Ecto Containment Unit cover that you can place over your fuse box. I'm shocked that no one has thought of this yet! It doesn't exist yet, but it needs to so that I can buy one!

The creator offers the following explanation of his creation:

Seeing as the Ecto Containment Unit is a wall-mounted hub where many wires originate, I figured it would be a fun way to conceal electrical panels found in households (more so if the panel is in the basement). Your circuit breakers would now reside in a ghost prison.
Instead of creating an electrical panel shaped like the Ecto Containment Unit, I felt a separate cover that sits atop an existing electrical panel would be easier and cheaper to install. The design is modular so it can safely bypass all the wiring.
Some people have electrical panels that are flush with the wall (all the wires are behind drywall), so this cover wouldn’t look as authentic without any visible wires. Maybe fake wires could be used? Then again, many geeks prefer a less cluttered look.
Beyond the installation of the cover, one possible challenge I can think of is getting the cover wired directly into the panel so the display lights of the Ecto Containment Unit can function. That kind of hookup would warrant the help of an electrician.
Speaking of which, I’m not an electrician so I don’t know if there are any hidden hazards when it comes to adding a cosmetic cover to an existing electrical panel. So if you are an electrician and can highlight why this is a terrible idea, please let me know in the comments.

Now I just can't imagine my home without one of these in it.

James McAvoy Says He’d Be Up for More X-MEN Movies

It seems like 20th Century Fox would be able to get the whole mutant gang back together for another X-Men film if they wanted to. A couple weeks ago we learned that Jennifer Lawrence was “dying” to do more X-Men films. This surprised a lot of fans because they thought they she wanted out. Well, that’s obviously not the case, and she's not the only member of the team who is up for more. While talking to the French outlet L’internaute, James McAvoy addressed it, saying:

"Yeah, I’ve heard… people have said she’s not into it, stuff like that. She’s always said to me that she would think about it. So yeah, that sounds great. I hope she does, because I love working with Jennifer. You know, we’ve been like an extended sort of family, in a weird way, for six or seven years now. Every two years, we get back together and hang out making a movie, then in six months’ time or a year’s time, we all go on the road promoting it, and we see each other again. I’d be really said not to see her every couple of years.”

It sounds to me like McAvoy plans on making more X-Men movies. When asked if he would return to the franchise to make more films he said:

“If they want me to, I’ll do more, yeah.”

Let's be honest, these X-Men films wouldn’t really be X-Men films without Professor X, and McAvoy has done a helluva job in the role.

X-Men: Apocalypse will be the end of the trilogy that started with First Class. It will introduce several new classic X-Men characters and set them up for a whole new series of adventures. Lawrence, McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult are all up for contract renegotiations after Apocalypse, so if the studio wants them back they’ll have to shell out some serious cash.

The fans seem to love these characters, and the franchise has been successful, though, so it would make sense for the studio to work something out with them.
