That WALKING DEAD Cliffhanger Sucked Ass and Jeffrey Dean Morgan Talks About It

0
0

I've been a fan and defender of The Walking Dead since the series first started. Season six was easily one of the most intense seasons ever, and it was leading up to something huge! I was excited for the season finale! I knew the villain Negan would be introduced, and I knew someone would die. What I didn't know is that there would be absolutely no payoff at the end of the finale. Fans were left with one of the most frustrating and uncalled for cliffhangers ever.

Don't worry about any spoilers with this article because there are absolutely no spoilers to be given! Yeah, someone died, but the show's own season finale wouldn't even tell the audience who it was! I absolutely hated that about this finale. It was a long, drawn-out tease with no payoff. They played with our emotions for an hour and a half and then slapped us in the face and faded to black. Those greedy bastards.

Don't get me wrong, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was great as Negan, and he's going to be perfect in the role. It was just they way they handled that death. I don't understand why they ended it without telling the audience who he had killed. I think they did it so their season seven premiere ratings will explode. But you know what? I hope the identity of the character that died leaks online before then.

Morgan recently did an interview with EW in which he talks about the fans' frustration over the unnecessary cliffhanger. However, he believes that the showrunners made the right decision.

“Well, I didn’t know it was going to be a cliffhanger until I watched the show. That’s just how it was done in my world. I don’t know if any of the cast knew exactly how it was going to end, which kind of caused a lot of the uncertainty and emotion that was going on. That said, in talking to Scott and Robert [after the finale], I think that their explanation was that it was the end of the story for that season, and that Rick has lost control and there’s Negan, and Negan has all the control.
“And I think that’s where they wanted to end the story, and it’s not about the death of that person, and then the death of the person is going to kick off season 7, and season 7 will be a big part of, obviously, who is on the receiving end of Lucille? I understand the fans’ frustration, I get that; that being said … I have to trust these writers and showrunners. They know what they’re doing; a lot of people watch for 6 seasons, and I believe that they’ll be back to see who met Lucille and as the story continues to grow.”

I'm still not sold on it, and what Morgan says doesn't make it any better for me. They still could have had a major cliffhanger by revealing who died at the last second. After all the time that fans have invested in this show, that would have given fans the satisfaction and payoff they were expecting. Instead, as a fan, I feel like I was taken advantage of. I didn't need that kind of stupid-ass cliffhanger to get me to watch next season. What the showrunners did with the season finale shows me that they have a lack of respect for their fans.

Supercut: Slow Motion Shots in Quentin Tarantino Movies

Editor Jacob T. Swinney has made five video essays about different aspects of the films of writer/director Quentin Tarantino, including examinations of his bloodiest moments, driving shots, and visual homages, just to name a few. Now he's back with a new supercut, this time turning his attention to the filmmaker's use of slow motion. What's your favorite slow-mo Tarantino shot? It's hard to beat the ones of the guys walking in Reservoir Dogs, just because they're so iconic.

The films of Quentin Tarantino are some of the most stylish films ever made. Slow motion is just one of the many techniques jammed into Tarantino's overstuffed bag of tricks. Tarantino often employs slow motion when he wants us to really take in a tragic moment, forcing us to endure the tragedy slowly with more details. Other times, he uses slow motion to build energy and prolong intensity. And sometimes he uses it simply because it looks so cool. Here is a look at Tarantino's use of slow motion shots throughout his career.

Spellbinding New Trailer For Steven Spielberg's THE BFG

Disney has released a wonderful new trailer for Steven Spielberg's The BFG, which looks like a thrilling and mysterious adventure. It's been a long time since we've seen Spielberg make a kids movie that takes us on a journey to a magical world, so I'm very excited to see how this turns out.

The BFG tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. Spielberg spoke a little about the story:

“I think it was kind of genius of Roald Dahl to be able to empower the children. It was very, very brave of him to introduce that combination of darkness and light which was so much Disney’s original signature in a lot of their earlier works like in ‘Dumbo,’ ‘Fantasia,’ ‘Snow White’ and ‘Cinderella,’ and being able to do scary, but also be redemptive at the same time and teach a lesson, an enduring lesson, to everyone, it was a wonderful thing for Dahl to have done, and it was one of the things that attracted me to want to direct this Dahl book.
“It’s a story about friendship, it’s a story about loyalty and protecting your friends and it’s a story that shows that even a little girl can help a big giant solve his biggest problems.”

Here's a full detailed plot synopsis:

The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams.
Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.

The movie is set to be released on July 1st!

Awesome Mashup Tells HARRY POTTER Story Using HARDCORE HENRY's POV Style

In an effort to promote the new first-person POV action thriller Hardcore Henry (read our review here), PistolShrimps has produced an excellent mashup that imagines what Harry Potter would be like if it were shot in that same style. The locations, costumes, and visual effects are all pretty solid here, and I think it turned out really well. Check it out below:

Erik Bauersfeld, Voice of Admiral Ackbar, Dead at 93

THR reports that Erik Bauersfeld, the voice of Star Wars characters Admiral Ackbar and Bib Fortuna, has passed away. Bauersfeld, who worked as a radio producer before his big screen debut, also played a gardener in A.I. Artificial Intelligence and more recently provided voice work for Crimson Peak. He was 93 years old.

Although his contributions in Hollywood were few, his legacy lives on in one immortal line:

You can watch an interview Bauersfeld gave a couple years ago speaking about the role below.

Starz Jumps On The Streaming Bandwagon, Launches Service For $8.99 A Month

starz-jumps-on-the-streaming-bandwagon-for-899-a-month-social.jpg

Starz has officially launched a stand-alone streaming service. The Verge reports the premium subscription channel will offer its lineup for $8.99 a month, which puts it well below HBO's $14.99 and Showtime's $10.99. If you already subscribe to Starz, you will be able to download the service free of charge.

Another attractive feature of the streaming service is its option for "virtually unlimited download." Users will be able to download films and television shows to watch offline, which is an AWESOME feature. I can't tell you how often I've had to stop and restart an HBO movie because of lag in the streaming.

Add that on top of that, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is coming to the channel soon, and I think I'm sold! The app is currently available in the App and Google Play store.

Indie Horror Jumps On HARDCORE HENRY's Success With DEAD RUSH

It was only a matter of time before Hardcore Henry started seeing imitators. Dead Rush is an indie horror zombie film where you are battling the zombie apocalypse...provided you are a guy. Here's the description:

For the first time ever, the zombie apocalypse has fallen upon the shoulders of the viewer. Dead Rush puts you in the center of the mayhem like never before by letting you experience the horror through the eyes of a few struggling survivors as they search for safety, defend their loved ones, and fight for their lives through waves of the undead! Dawn is on the horizon, and even the day seems dark as night. The dead rush has begun. Will you make it?

I'm still waiting on the film to be shot with 360 video! I would love to experience that in VR. Then again, this might be scary to watch with goggles on as well.

Watch: First Teaser For AMC's FEED THE BEAST, Starring David Schwimmer and Jim Sturgess

0
0

I had no idea that AMC was developing a show called Feed the Beast with David Schwimmer and Jim Sturgess in the leads, but not only do we have a few images to share with you, but there's already a first look trailer available to watch (via Uproxx). It's a very quick look at the series, and it won't actually give you much information about the story, but luckily I have the full synopsis below:

“Feed the Beast” tells the story of Tommy (Schwimmer) and Dion (Sturgess) who are like brothers. With all the love – and all the complications – that comes with it. Dion can’t stay out of trouble. Tommy can’t move past it. For two friends on the brink of losing everything, a dusty pipe dream of opening up an upscale restaurant in their hometown of the Bronx is all they have left to turn their lives around.
Additional casting for the series includes Michael Gladis (Mad Men, House of Lies), who will play Patrick Woichik, aka The Tooth Fairy, the soft spoken, brutally intimidating local mobster with a penchant for pulling teeth; Lorenza Izzo (The Green Inferno, Sex Ed), who will play Pilar Herrera, a woman who meets Tommy in a grief group, and is desperately searching for true love; Christine Adams (Batman Begins, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), who will star as Tommy’s late wife Rie Moran, John Doman (The Wire, The Affair), who will play Tommy’s father Aidan Moran, a shrewd and ruthless businessman and unapologetic racist; and Elijah Jacob (Spot On) who will play Tommy’s ten year old son TJ Moran.

Schwimmer is obviously best-known for his work as Ross on Friends, but he recently made a bit of a splash on FX's The People vs. O.J. Simpson and he was terrific in HBO's Band of Brothers miniseries. Sturgess is probably best known for 21 and Across The Universe, but he did some strong work in Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis' Cloud Atlas back in 2012. I'm not sure who thought it'd be a good idea to team these two up in a story about starting a restaurant in the Bronx, but we'll see if that turns out to be a weird casting choice in a show that's forgotten by time or, perhaps, a stroke of brilliance for a show that we're going to be talking about for years to come.

Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill Talk About a New Superman Standalone Movie

0
0

We know that Warner Bros. and DC Comics have a whole slate of films set up for the next five years, but one of the things that it not officially on that list yet is a true sequel to Man of Steel. But if Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill have anything to say about it, it's only a matter of time before that gets added to the calendar. In interviews with IGN, they both expressed interest in the idea:

Snyder: "I think if we could get a good script it'd be great to have a standalone Superman movie. I think that would be fun to do."
Cavill: "I do believe it depends upon the success of this movie. If this goes well, then we can start negotiating with Warner Bros. to develop a standalone Superman, but they've got their plans set out for other stuff and Justice Leagues and various other movies, so it's about finding the time really. It's something I'd be very keen to do."

Snyder also said "Part of the reason we haven't announced the stand alone Superman movie at this time was to support some of the events of [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice]," which is obviously a reference to what happens at the very end of the movie. Even though it's obvious that Henry Cavill's place in the lineup is secure for future films, I can see why the studio might have wanted to wait on an official announcement until Justice League comes out and that "situation" is resolved. (Sorry for being vague — I'm trying to avoid spoilers.)

People in the comments section seem to think that I'm anti-DC, but that's simply not true. I love Batman: The Movie, Batman, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (and I even have some affection for Batman Forever, even though it's not very good). I enjoyed V For Vendetta, Watchmen, and Man of Steel. You can even read my review of every Superman movie on Blu-ray that I wrote a few years ago. I wouldn't have sat through all of those movies if I was actively rooting against the studio. I'm not anti-DC, I'm just anti-bad movies. I hope they do end up making a true Man of Steel sequel, and I hope that after the events of BVS, Superman as a character has undergone a drastic changed. Cavill is a great fit for the part, but I think the characterization of Superman has been a big challenge for the filmmakers so far, and I'd love to see them shift back toward a version of the Man of Steel that fans recognize and can embrace as a shining beacon of hope in a dark world.

One of my favorite anime of all time premieres on Toonami this weekend! I talked about Hunter x Hunter at length about a year ago, but suffice to say if you're not initiated, you will not regret jumping in this one! The characters are great and the rotating cast always leaves you guessing about what will happen next! Look out for it beginning at 1 AM EST.

Joel McHale to Play Chevy Chase in Netflix's Movie About The Origins of National Lampoon

0
0

Netflix is making a film called A Futile and Stupid Gesture that's about the origins of National Lampoon, and THR reports that Joel McHale has been hired to play Chevy Chase. This should be especially interesting to those who watched Community, NBC's comedy series on which McHale co-starred with Chase. Over the years, McHale hasn't been afraid to riff about Chase's dickish actions and gruff personality, but it seems like his own acerbic wit and penchant for sarcastic delivery was probably influenced by Chase's early career, so there's a nice ironic touch to this casting.

A Futile and Stupid Gesture stars Will Forte as National Lampoon co-founder Douglas Kenney and Domhnall Gleeson as co-founder Henry Beard, and it's being directed by Wet Hot American Summer's David Wain.

Kenney was the editor of the Harvard Lampoon when he met Henry Beard and Robert Hoffman, which, soon after graduation, resulted in the creation of National Lampoon, the humor magazine that became a major force and brand in 1970s comedy. Kenney ended up going Hollywood and succumbed to drug and alcohol issues before falling off a cliff in Hawaii under mysterious circumstances.
Kenney co-wrote Caddyshack, the 1980 comedy that was an early Chase hit and the two were close friends. Chase was with his troubled pal in Hawaii before his death but returned to Los Angeles for work. He was set to fly back when he received word that Kenney was missing.

National Lampoon was a hugely influential magazine that launched the careers of John Hughes, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Harold Ramis, and many more. I'm very curious to see how this film turns out. Shooting starts this month, so I expect it to pop up on Netflix either late this year or early next year.

Honest Trailer For STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

ScreenJunkies are back with a new Honest Trailer, and this time they're turning their attention to the most talked-about movie of 2015: Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As with most of these videos, they attempt to insert some humor while making observations that everyone else made immediately after the movie came out, and then devolving into their own childish in-jokes that they think are hilarious, like variations on the pronunciation of the word "boobs." But if you've seen one of these, you already know all of that. Here's the new one.

Leaked Video From THE PHOENIX INCIDENT UFO Film Focuses on Missing Person

0
0

Some leaked footage has surfaced from the upcoming sci-fi UFO film The Phoenix Incident, which is based on actual events on 1997 in which there was a massive UFO sighting in Phoenix AZ. This kind of stuff absolutely fascinates me because of its unexplained nature. I also love all the crazy conspiracy theories surrounding these UFO sightings like what happened in Phoenix. It cool that we are getting a movie that explores this unexplained phenomenon.

The footage you see here focuses on Jacob Reynolds who is one of four men that mysteriously disappeared during the incident on March 13th, 1997.  The tape gives us a look at the aspirations, relationships, and impact that he had on his family, friends, and communities.

Blurring the line between fiction and reality, the fact based, sci-fi thriller revolves around a military conspiracy and the controversial missing person’s case surrounding the infamous 1997 event. With the support of the victims’ families, along with classified military documentation, cockpit recordings, Air Force pilot interviews, actual FLIR footage, and first-hand recovered video evidence, The Phoenix Incident exposes the military’s engagement with extraterrestrial contact, and the collateral damage of 4 civilians.

The movie was written and directed by Keith Arem, and this is his debut feature film. He has a background in the video game industry, though, and has worked on games that include Call of Duty, Titanfall, Saints Row, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, and more. The film also stars famed gaming actor Troy Baker

The Phoenix Incident will be released through Fathom Events on March 10th. To watch the previously-released trailer for the film, click here.

That BATMAN V SUPERMAN Dream Sequence May Not Mean What We All Thought

0
0

Spoilers ahead.

One of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's most talked-about sections is the part in which we see Batman's "Knightmare" and The Flash's inter-dimensional warning to him. Both seem to be set up as dream sequences, and director Zack Snyder has since said that the Knightmare portion could be a look into one possible future.

But while The Flash sequence that immediately follows would be completely incomprehensible to general audiences, fans could probably deduce that the speedster was traveling through a boom tube in order to give Bruce Wayne a warning. (A warning he does not heed and doesn't tell a soul about, but that's neither here nor there.) He says something about how "you were right about him" and to "find us," presumably meaning the other members of the Justice League. I, like everyone else I know who saw the movie, thought that The Flash was referring to Superman in this scene, especially since it came on the heels of a nightmarish possible-future sequence in which Superman is even more full of rage than normal. But according to Jay Olivia, the storyboard artist who worked with Snyder on this scene, when The Flash says "you were right about him," he may have been referring to someone else entirely.

From the Hall of Justice podcast (via Uproxx and Screen Rant):

“Okay…you’ve watched The Flashpoint Paradox, my movie, right? In the DC Universe in the comics, [..] when you go back in time you create this kind of ‘Time Boom’ kind of thing where lots of things change. […] I don’t know if this is Zack’s thinking, but this is mine: What if that isn’t a dream sequence? What if what you saw was a Time Boom, a latent memory from the future when Flash comes back? If you look at the cut, he doesn’t go to sleep! He’s waiting for the [Lexcorp file decryption] and suddenly this [Knightmare sequence] comes in, and he’s jogged out of it seeing his own death. And what does he see? He sees Flash. And if you’re a DC fan, you know what’s happening. You know that Flash going back in time, that memory is now coming back to him… mind you, it’s jumbled.”
“And remember, when Flash goes back in time, he tells him ‘you were right about him.’ He doesn’t say exactly who ‘him’ is. The average audience member, and even Bruce Wayne, is going to think that he’s right about Superman, when in fact he’s referring to someone else.”

So...who do you think The Flash was talking about in that scene? And does anyone have any theories about why Bruce doesn't say anything about this to anyone?

Video Explores The Isolation of Rey in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Here's a cool video that explores the isolation of Daisy Ridley's character Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The lonely scavenger often appears very small in the frame to hit home the sense that she's alone in the universe, and she also often appears as the only person on screen. Rey is a great character (my favorite of the newbies from the movie), and I can't wait to see how her journey continues in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Check out the video below:

45 Minute Documentary Dives Deep Into The Making of Disney's ZOOTOPIA

0
0

I still haven't had a chance to see Walt Disney Animation's latest film, Zootopia, but I've heard great things about it from everyone I know who's seen it. I'll get around to checking it out one of these days, and I'm bookmarking this page to come back to after I do. /Film has pointed me to this 45 minute documentary about the making of the movie. It seems rare that things like this make it online before the movies leave theaters (BVS's deleted scene is another anomaly, so maybe the tides are turning in that direction), so check it out now if you've already seen the film.

Jon Favreau on Disney’s MAGIC KINGDOM Movie and How THE JUNGLE BOOK Might Help It Get Made

0
0

One of the projects I’ve been most excited about from Jon Favreau is his Magic Kingdom movie. It’s been about six years since the project was announced, and in that time Favreau has made Cowboys & Aliens, Chef, and The Jungle Book. Magic Kingdom isn’t completely dead, but it’s not really in active development either. This is something Favreau hopes will change with the help of The Jungle Book.

Magic Kingdom is set in the Disneyland theme park and would feature the characters and attractions at the park coming to life and interacting with each other. When previously talking about the film and his inspiration behind it, Favreau said:

“Between the theme parks and the movies, the Disney iconography was probably the first set of archetypes that I was exposed to. Walt was able to expose me as a child to the full array of emotions, including fear and sorrow. Those movies and attractions haunted my dreams and made a deep impression on me as a child. When I first heard about the [‘Magic Kingdom’ film] project, I was on my way to visit Disneyland with my family. I took notes and had no problem filling a book with all the ideas that this concept offered, even on first blush. Since then, I was lucky enough to be given a tour of Imagineering by Tony Baxter, who knows just about everything there is to know about Disneyland. He pulled original concept art from the archives for me and exposed me to Walt’s original vision.”

Then during a recent interview with Collider, the director offered an update on the film, and explains how The Jungle Book might help it move forward:

“Hopefully now with this collaboration, if it works out well, we can explore what Magic Kingdom could be. Magic Kingdom is a story I’ve been developing. Michael Chabon wrote the draft about Disneyland coming to life, and all of the different lands and attractions all overlapping one another and creating a big adventure that a family gets caught up in. It’s something I feel very passionate about. Part of the reason I explored this technology I used on Jungle Book is because I was considering it for that film, and maybe it might be something we work together on.”

I have a feeling The Jungle Book is going to be a success and I think audiences are going to love it. If that is the case, then I don’t see why Disney wouldn’t want to jump on a film like Magic Kingdom. After seeing Jungle Book for myself, there’s no doubt in my mind that Favreau would bring the same level of talent, quality, heart, imagination, and emotion to a film like Magic Kingdom. This sounds like a movie he was destined to make.
