'90s Animated X-Men Take On the Latest X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Trailer

I know these aren't everyone's thing, but I personally love these animated re-cut trailers! I also rank the 90's animated X-Men in my top ten list of cartoons so when I saw this recut trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, I just had to force feed it to you. Unlike most of these trailers I see, this one actually makes an attempt to replicate the actual trailer's on screen action as well!

Great job Philysteak!

Does Batman Cross The Line in BATMAN V SUPERMAN? Zack Snyder Explains The Character's Actions

This could be considered a SPOILER discussion, so proceed at your own risk.

I loved Ben Affleck's version of Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — he was completely badass and the most hardcore version of the character we've seen yet. I'm currently writing up my thoughts on the movie, which I will share with you later. In the meantime, director Zack Snyder did an interview with Hey U Guys in which he explains Batman's violent nature and why some people die when they fight him.

Any Batman fan knows that Batman doesn't go out of his way to kill people, but I believe that his actions in fighting back lead to the deaths of some of them. That's why I was OK with the bad guys dying while fighting The Dark Knight in Batman v Superman. Sometimes it just can't be helped. Once Batman is in the zone and going ballistic on bad guys, he is fighting not only to stop them but also for his life, so if people die in the process, it's their own fault for trying to take down the Batman.

"I tried to do it in a technical way. There’s a great YouTube video that shows all the kills in the Christopher Nolan movies even though we would perceive them as movies where he doesn’t kill anyone. I think there’s 42 potential kills that Batman does! Also, it goes back and includes even the Tim Burton Batman movies where this reputation as a guy that doesn’t kill comes from.
So, I tried to do it by proxy. Shoot the car they’re in, the car blows up or the grenade would go off in the guy’s hand, or when he shoots the tank and the guy pretty much lights the tank [himself]. I perceive it as him not killing directly, but if the bad guys are associated with a thing that happens to blow up, he would say that that’s not really my problem.
A little more like manslaughter than murder, although I would say that in the Frank Miller comic book that I reference, he kills all the time. There’s a scene from the graphic novel where he busts through a wall, takes the guy’s machine gun…I took that little vignette from a scene in The Dark Knight Returns, and at the end of that, he shoots the guy right between the eyes with the machine gun. One shot. Of course, I went to the gas tank, and all of the guys I work with were like, ‘You’ve gotta shoot him in the head’ because they’re all comic book dorks, and I was like, ‘I’m not gonna be the guy that does that!’"

I actually liked how Snyder handled all of this stuff in the film. I'm sure not everyone will agree with his choices, but as he pointed out, it's not like Batman has never killed anyone in the comics. The only person Batman almost straight-up tries to murder was Superman.

If you've seen the movie, what did you think about the deaths of those who died in the process of fighting Batman?

Luke Evans and Hugh Jackman Imitate Disney's Gaston

The Jonathan Ross Show had Hugh Jackman and Luke Evans on their program to discuss many things, among them the upcoming live-action remake of Beauty and The Beast. Specifically they talked about everyone's favorite Disney villain, the arrogant Gaston. Jackman has played the character in theater productions and Evans is set to star as villain in the film (alongside Emma Watson, who is playing Belle)!

The two squared off and sang a tune from the film, and I don't mind Evans, but we all knew before we watched Jackman was gonna win. The guy is quite literally Gaston personified! Evans held his own though, and at least made me a little excited to see the live-action version of this Disney classic.

GAME OF THRONES Leading Ladies Get EW Covers For Season 6

The sixth season of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO one month from tonight, so the publicity machine has been churning out new information about the show like crazy over the past few days. Entertainment Weekly has released its newest magazine cover — complete with variant editions — and they feature the badass women of the series.

“The women are rocking this season — and I’m not just saying that because they’re on your cover,” says HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. “Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) always does, but also Brienne (Gwendoline Christie), Arya (Maisie Williams), Sansa (Sophie Turner), Cersei (Lena Headey), Margaery (Natalie Dormer), and other characters too, like Yara (Gemma Whelan). They power this season. It’s organic to the storytelling, yet a radical shift. It’s the women that are the hope that we’re watching as the chess pieces move this season, and it’s very exciting.”

I will be very surprised if all of these characters make it through season six alive. Game of Thrones returns on April 24th.

PACIFIC RIM Awesomely Re-Imagined as an Old-School Anime

At one point, it didn't look like Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim 2 was going to happen. Then Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight was hired to take over for del Toro in the director's chair as del Toro went to pursue other projects.

There was also an animated series that was supposed to be developed along with the movie, but that fell apart and unfortunately, it's no longer happening.

Thanks to Jeremie Carreon, we get a little taste of what that might have been like in the form of an anime. He created an awesome title sequence for a non-existent series that I wish existed.

This short video did a great job of getting me excited to see more giant robots fighting giant monsters in the upcoming sequel.

Disney and Lucasfilm just sent over this trailer that teases some of the deleted scenes that we'll see in the home video release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Just yesterday, Joey wrote about some newly-released photos from some of these sequences, but it's much better to actually see them in action than just reading descriptions of what they're about. Check it out below.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes to Digital HD on April 1st and Blu-ray/DVD on April 5th.

See the Star Wars: The Force Awakens deleted scenes, “Finn and the Villager”, “Jakku Message”, “X-Wings Prepare for Lightspeed”, “Kylo Searches The Falcon”, “Snow Speeder Chase,” and “Finn Will Be Fine" on the Digital HD and Blu-ray Combo Pack, plus a special bonus deleted scene, “Tunnel Standoff" only on Digital HD or by redeeming the digital copy included in the Blu-ray Combo Pack.

VALERIAN First Look: Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in Luc Besson's Sci-Fi Epic

The Fifth Element director Luc Besson is returning to big-budget science fiction with a film adaptation of the 1967 French comic Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and now we have our first look at stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in costume.

Valerian and Laureline.... And a guy on the back!😳 #DaneDehaan #caradelevingne #badgalriri More pictures tomorrow on @entertainmentweekly 😘🐬

A photo posted by @lucbesson on

I know this is just one image and there's no way to judge how good the film will be based on only this, but at least the costumes look cool. Remember the early photos from Terminator Genisys? Yikes. Thankfully, these looks like they have a nice combination of practicality and functionality, with a badass robotic sheen to the whole thing. Stay tuned for more photos tomorrow, but I'd love to hear what you think about this one in the comments. Clive Owen, Rihanna, John Goodman, Rutger Hauer, and Ethan Hawke co-star in the film, and you can read the synopsis right here:

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.
Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time, uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

The film arrives in theaters on July 21, 2017.

ARROW Discussion: Okay, I'm Officially Over Felicity

$

0

**Hey! This article contains spoilers of episodes leading up to and including last night's Arrow! You can totally still read it, but don't go off whining if I reveal anything you don't want to read about before watching!**

I've been really cautious with my criticism of this season of Arrow. Last season was godawful in its execution, and the story was an outright mess. This season started out okay, and last night it became a full-on CW teeny-bopper drama.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I was never a huge subscriber to the whole Olicity fan service (I even wrote a year ago about how it's annoying that Oliver has to bang every woman on the show), but they had won me over in the first stretch of the season.

That was when the show was Arrow.

Now don't get me wrong, the subplots of Arrow (minus flashbacks, Roy Mirakuru, and "who shot Sarah") have always been weak, but this season the subplot has become the primary focus of the show. More specifically, Arrow has become Felicity.

Once again, I'm not a member of the crowd that's full of the blind anger you'll see about this subject on the internet. For a bulk of the series — and really up until last week — I liked Felicity! I understood how her getting shot helped the story. It would make Oliver angry, and help him find his balance between the vigilante and new Green Arrow. I was eager to see how the rest of the season would play out with this bold new direction the writing team had planned!

But that's not what the writing team had planned.

The plan of the writing team was to halt literally all main enemy story progression to focus on Felicity juggling a disability, a wedding, and a shocking revelation that absolutely rocked her world. I think her character has now become more dynamic than the rest of the Arrow team combined!

Guys, they literally had her perform a miracle on screen. And just when I thought it couldn't get any worse...SHE BROKE UP WITH OLIVER.

I wasn't happy with the decision when we first saw it several weeks ago, but I reserved my judgment until I saw how it played out when the show returned.

Last night was the most annoying f****** hour of my life.

On top of the fact it was a throwaway episode, I literally felt like I was a mediator forced to sit and observe a teenage romance gone awry. You know what grown adults do when they break up? They stay the hell away from each other. You know what teens do when they break up?!

  • They constantly remain in each other's company to heighten emotions
  • They brood and make vague references to their relationship to get a rise out of the other
  • They drag their friends into it

Oh and what was with that scene with the packing?! Felicity being "good old goofy blonde" making stupid jokes, not even a day removed from their break-up?!

"Oh...marriage...poor choice of words."

I want to be a complete dick about how ridiculous that was in context, but it makes me so damn mad I can't even do it.

Can we also just address the fact that this entire thing happened when Oliver learned he had a kid a month ago and the mother swore him to secrecy? Don't get me wrong, people swear me to secrecy all the time and I'm still gonna tell my wife, but you would imagine someone who supposedly has an IQ as high as Felicity's could have just a bit of damn empathy. I understand being mad...but calling off the wedding?! That's money down the drain.

I struggled...I really struggled through that episode hoping with the marriage ploy that at worst they get back together and we pretend it never happened next week, but somehow the writing team dug themselves deeper. Felicity ends the episode in a wedding dress (where she again makes a dumb joke), tells Oliver she loves him, and then says it can never happen.

I'm literally reliving my sophomore year of high school.

I'm so defeated at this point, but I hold on past commercials for a look at next week, excited because Felicity said she's finally leaving! Does this mean an episode with Angry Oliver taking no prisoners and settling his score with Damien Darhk?! Nope, just a preview of next week's EXCLUSIVELY FELICITY-FOCUSED EPISODE.

I can't. I literally cannot. I won't defend this show anymore. They have until the end of this season for me or I'm out.

Paul McCartney Joins PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES

Here's a piece of fun casting news that I didn't see coming. Paul McCartney will be joining Johnny Depp in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. This is the fifth installment of the franchise and according to the report, McCartney will have at least one scene.

McCartney also joins Geoffrey Rush as Barbosa, Javier Bardem as the film's villain, and Orlando Bloom, who will be back as Will Turner.

The film has already completed shooting but directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning will be shooting one more extra scene that will feature McCartney. Is this scene pertinent to the story? Probably not. McCartney probably just asked to be in the film and Disney was like, "yeah sure!"

Of course, McCartney isn't the first famous English rock star to appear in the Pirates franchise. The Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards played Sparrow's pops in At World's End and On Stranger Tides. He was perfect for the part and made a great old pirate (and Depp reportedly modeled his Jack Sparrow character at least partially on Richards). There's no word on who McCartney will play, but he doesn't seem like pirate material to me.

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

The new Pirates film also stars Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites, and it will be released on May 26, 2017.

Showrunners Claim GAME OF THRONES Season 6 Won't Spoil Upcoming Books

$

0

Now that I've caught up with all of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels, I'm just like all of the other book readers out there who watch Game of Thrones. But the big difference is that I've caught up just in time for season 6, which is the first season that actively goes beyond Martin's novels in a major way; this means that now book readers and non-book readers are on a more level playing field, but it also kind of sucks for those of us who put all of the hours into reading the books. I mean, season 6 has to spoil the upcoming books, right? According to the showrunners, not necessarily:

“People are talking about whether the books are going to be spoiled – and it’s really not true,” Benioff told EW. “So much of what we’re doing diverges from the books at this point. And while there are certain key elements that will be the same, we’re not going to talk so much about that – and I don’t think George is either. People are going to be very surprised when they read the books after the show. They’re quite divergent in so many respects for the remainder of the show.”
“What makes the books so great is that George doesn’t make meticulous blueprints for every beat of this story and then fill in the blanks dutifully going from A to B to C, fleshing out an outline,” Weiss added. “At a certain point, we realized we were going to outpace the books and we kind of chose to see it as a great thing on both sides – there’s this amazing world George has created and now there are two different versions, and there’s no reason we can see why you can’t be thrilled and surprised and dismayed by both of these different versions of this world.”

I think the experiences of watching the show and reading the books are different enough that reading the new books won't be as disappointing as many might assume, especially if they're true to their word about diverging in major ways from Martin's intended path. Plus, there are plenty of characters that are dead in the show that aren't dead in the books. The novels also present a much richer and expansive world to dive into just by the nature of the medium. In an ideal world, we'd be able to experience all of the twists and turns of the story through Martin's prose first, but because of the delays in writing and the speed at which the show moves through each season, that's an impossibility; here's hoping the two end products will be different enough to keep some major surprises in store for the book readers when all is said and done.

Minimalist Superhero Masks For Batman, Daredevil, Deadpool, and More

Here's some cool artwork that gives some famous superhero masks the minimalist treatment. These come courtesy of Ukrainian graphic designer Yuri Krasnoshchok, and you can see more at his Behance page. There are a ton of heroes and villains featured in these two images, but I think my favorite is Daredevil because of the way his horns affect the shadows. (It's interesting that Superman is the only hero who doesn't have shadow coming off his face; the same is true for Venom, but he's entirely engulfed in shadows.)

Sansa Pulls an A.C. Slater in EW's New GAME OF THRONES Season 6 Photos

Earlier today, I wrote about the new EW covers featuring the leading ladies of HBO's Game of Thrones, and now the magazine has released a bunch of new photos of them for fans to pore over — and some accompanying quotes to read too much into, as well. Now we have a better look at Arya (who's apparently been healed of her blindness), Dany (looking regal in white, and much safer than when she appears as a Dothraki captive in the new trailer), Cersei (who's gotta be plotting some epic revenge), Sansa (who will hopefully be better off this season than she was last season), Brienne (badass as usual), and Margaery (one of the smartest women in the land, who still has to answer to the Sparrows for her crimes). Gotta love that Sansa's pulling an A.C. Slater with that chair in the group photo above, too.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24th.

"We've seen Margaery in a lot of sticky situations, but she's never been out of her depth before," says Dormer.
"Brienne is so unique and unconventional and so strong, and I love the writing hasn't allowed her to just rest there," says Christie.
"This is the season I'm most excited for," says Turner. "Sansa's coming into her own and standing up for herself."
"She really has nothing to lose and she has everything to gain from the horrible position she finds herself in," says Headey.
"She's learning the last lesson she needs to learn," says Clarke. "There's just few remnants of being a human being she's shaking off."
"Last season people asked: 'Is she dead?' I'm all, 'No, she's blind.' It's too easy to kill her," says Williams. "If there's one thing we've learned from Game of Thrones it's that death is the easy way out."

Go Behind The Scenes of THE JUNGLE BOOK with New Featurette

After rolling my eyes at the announcement that Iron Man director Jon Favreau was remaking The Jungle Book for Disney, I began to take the project seriously after attending an early press event and being super impressed with the quality of the footage I saw that day. I'm legitimately looking forward to seeing how this film turns out now.

Today, the studio released a new featurette that goes behind the scenes of the movie, showing off some footage of the impressive voice cast recording lines in the audio booth. This movie looks like it could be an excellent adaptation, and one that's actually justified because of its innovative use of technology, which is more than a lot of other modern adaptations can say.

The Jungle Book arrives in theaters on April 15th.

WAR DOGS Trailer: Jonah Hill and Miles Teller Bro Out and Run Guns

$

Here's the first trailer for War Dogs, formerly known as Arms and the Dudes. The film is based on the shocking-but-true story chronicled in a 2011 Rolling Stone article of two twenty-something Miami Beach stoners who worked the system and earned a $300 million weapons contract from the U.S. government to supply guns to our allies in Afghanistan during the war, and it stars Jonah Hill and Miles Teller as the two bro-tastic war profiteers.

The Hangover and Old School director Todd Phillips directed this one, but even if his name wasn't plastered all over this trailer, you probably would have been able to guess he was the one responsible for it. Teller is hated by just about every internet commenter I've ever seen, and he's playing another smarmy douchebag here. As much as I think this will be a little too genuinely bro-heavy for my tastes, I also read that insane Rolling Stone article and this story is so crazy that I'm curious to see what Phillips does to adapt it.

War Dogs hits theaters on August 19th.

From director Todd Phillips (“The Hangover” trilogy) comes “War Dogs,” starring Oscar nominee Jonah Hill (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Moneyball”) and Miles Teller (“Whiplash,” the “Divergent” trilogy).

Based on a true story, “War Dogs” follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

The film also stars Ana de Armas (“Knock Knock”) and Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (“American Sniper,” “American Hustle”). The screenplay is by Stephen Chin and Todd Phillips & Jason Smilovic, based on the Rolling Stone article titled “Arms and the Dudes,” by Guy Lawson. Mark Gordon (“Steve Jobs”), Todd Phillips and Bradley Cooper are the producers, with David Siegel and Bryan Zuriff serving as executive producers.

“War Dogs” reunites Phillips with several of his collaborators from “The Hangover” trilogy, including director of photography Lawrence Sher, production designer Bill Brzeski and editor Jeff Groth. Joining the team is costume designer Michael Kaplan (“Star Trek,” “Star Trek: Into Darkness”). The music is by Cliff Martinez (“Drive,” “Traffic”).

Several Kickass Clips From Cancelled X-MEN: DANGER ROOM PROTOCOLS Series

$

A couple of months ago we were introduced to a fan-made X-Men animated series called X-Men: Danger Room Protocols. The series was being developed and self-funded by Joel Furtado until Marvel swooped in and shut it down.

The series was supposed to be a love letter to the classic 1990s animated series and it was done in a fun pixilated style. To show you what we are all going to miss out on, Furtado is releasing a series of clips that he created for the show and as you'll see, what he has created is pretty damn awesome. The animation is very fluid and well done, especially with the fight sequences. It's a shame that Marvel felt they needed to shut it down, I would have been an avid watcher!

Who knows how many more of these he'll post until Marvel tells him to stop, but enjoy it while it lasts!

Zack Snyder and BATMAN V SUPERMAN Cast Respond to The Film's Reviews

$
0
0

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is not a good movie. It has flashes of things that work here and there (Ben Affleck's Batman isn't bad), but for the most part, it's a mess of a film that drops the ball in a huge way and seems like a massive waste of a concept. (Joey is publishing his thoughts about the movie on the site tomorrow, and I'm interested to see if he agrees with that assessment.) As of this writing, the film currently has a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, so it seems that a majority of the critics out there share my opinion this time.

But Zack Snyder and the cast of the film aren't worried about the critical response. They know it's a critic-proof movie and the idea of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman sharing the big screen together is too great a hook for fans to ignore. Even if it was sitting at a 0%, fans would still go see it because, well, because it's Batman v Superman, for God's sake! Yahoo UK sat down with the filmmakers and asked them their thoughts about the negative reception:

Well, yeah, Henry Cavill — we do go into a movie with personal opinions and preconceived ideas. That's what criticism is. Cavill seems to have the same mentality that often pops up in online comments about how writers should strive to write "objective" reviews, which — and this is important — is not actually possible. Those "personal opinions" he's so worried about are the actual reason people read film criticism. Devin Faraci at BirthMoviesDeath wrote a great piece about this recently, and I'd recommend checking it out.

I almost guarantee that if the film had received rave reviews thus far, Cavill wouldn't have said that. "The audience's opinion is what really matters" is just a way to deflect some of the sting of all of those bad reviews, and while I don't blame him for getting defensive about it, that quote does make it seem like he has a fundamental misunderstanding of what criticism is.
