Emily Browning Joins Neil Gaiman’s AMERICAN GODS

Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) is the latest actress to be cast in Starz series adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. She has been cast in the role of Laura Moon. She is the wife of Shadow Moon and "has been preparing for her husband's pending prison release.  Little does she know that she will go on an unexpected journey that leads her to an epiphany about her relationship and affords her a second chance to get things right."

I've always liked Browning as an actress, and I think this will be a great role for her to take on. Gaiman said of her casting:

“I've been fascinated by Emily Browning since ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’. She has a challenge ahead of her: Laura is a tricky character, and the Laura on the screen is even trickier and more dangerous than the one on the page. She's going to have a wonderful time bringing Laura to life.”

Series producers Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) and Michael Green (Heroes) made a joint statement expressing their excitement for Browning's involvement:

“You don’t need a magical coin when you have Emily Browning. She brings a fascinating spark of life to every role she inhabits and we are tickled she will be lighting up Laura Moon and bringing her to life in more ways than one on American Gods.”

Browning joins the previously cast Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday and Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon. This seems like it's shaping up to be a solid series. The talent that is involved so far with both the cast and crew is pretty impressive.

The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

The series will begin shooting in April.

Marvel Comics has released the first look at Alex Ross's cover art for Amazing Spider-Man #15, and as you can see, it features Mary Jane wearing the Iron Spider Armor that made its debut during the first Civil War event series.

If you've been keeping up with the comics, then you know Mary Jane has been working with Tony Stark lately, and Civil War II is coming soon. As ComicBook.com points out, maybe this is a sign of things to come.

Marvel also announced Civil War II: Amazing Spider-Man, which is a four-issue miniseries by writer Christos Gage and artist Travel Foreman. The comic obviously ties in with Civil War II, which revolves around a new Inhuman who has the ability to see crimes before they occur. The superheroes are then forced to choose whether or not to use this Inhuman’s power to wield “predictive justice.” Yesterday, Marvel revealed the two opposing teams led by Iron Man and Captain Marvel.

Civil War II: Amazing Spider-Man #1 goes on sale in June. You can check out cover art by Khary Randolph for that below.

Disney Has Reacquired Rights For THE BLACK CAULDRON

Looks like Disney has all it needs to bring back a cult series that I personally loved as a kid, but was hated by critics and the studio alike. The Black Cauldron nearly bankrupted Disney after earning back only half of its $40 million budget in theaters, but it inevitably lead to Disney backpedaling away from teens, returning their aim towards children, and making The Little Mermaid, which sparked an animation revolution at the studio!

Variety says Disney has reacquired the rights to The Chronicles of Prydain, which were the original books by Lloyd Alexander that The Black Cauldron was a part of. Another little fun fact about this film: it was the first Disney movie to feature computer animation!

Man, I forgot how awesome this was! Can't wait to see what Disney does with the franchise!

THE SHALLOWS Trailer and Poster: It's Blake Lively Against a Shark

Here's the first teaser trailer and poster for The Shallows, a film that was originally called In The Deep. The basic premise is pretty simple: it's girl vs. shark.

In the taut thriller The Shallows, Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. It's Jaws for a new generation.

Lively earned the starring role after a highly-competitive casting process, and Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra is behind the camera on this one. Sony is positioning it as a new Jaws, but they'll have to forgive me if I say it's going to take a hell of a lot more than this to convince me that The Shallows is worthy to stand next to one of the greatest films ever made.

We'll find out this summer, when The Shallows swims into theaters on June 24th.

Netflix Has Picked Up THE LITTLE PRINCE After Paramount Deserted It

The Little Prince, the film adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s popular novella, opened in international theaters last year and was originally scheduled to be released today in the U.S. by Paramount Pictures. But not long ago, the studio quietly dropped the film from its release calendar, leaving many wondering if we'd ever have a chance to see it at all. Thankfully, Netflix has swooped in and picked up the rights to the film, and the streaming service plans to release it sometime later this year (though it remains unclear whether the streaming release will also play in some theaters, ala Beasts of No Nation).

I was completely spellbound by the trailer, and at the time I thought the film might even end up being one of the best of the year. It has a spectacular voice cast: Riley Osborne as the Prince, Marion Cotillard as The Rose, Rachel McAdams as The Mother, James Franco as The Fox, Jeff Bridges as The Aviator, Benicio del Toro as The Snake, Ricky Gervais as The Conceited Man, Paul Giamatti as The Teacher, Albert Brooks as Businessman, Bud Cort as The King, and Mackenzie Foy as The Little Girl.

At the heart of it all is The Little Girl, who’s being prepared by her mother for the very grown–up world in which they live — only to be interrupted by her eccentric, kind–hearted neighbor, The Aviator. The Aviator introduces his new friend to an extraordinary world where anything is possible. A world that he himself was initiated into long ago by The Little Prince. It’s here that The Little Girl’s magical and emotional journey into her own imagination — and into the universe of The Little Prince — begins. And it’s where The Little Girl rediscovers her childhood and learns that ultimately, it’s human connections that matter most, and that what’s truly essential can only be seen with the heart.

Cool and Creepy Horror Short PASSENGER

I stumbled upon a sort of oldish, but not well-noticed horror short today that I think you'll like! You know how people in horror films put themselves in terrible situations? Passenger is the epitome of that! Why in the world would you park your car in the dead of night in an industrial section of town for a quick nap?! Turns out crime isn't the only reason you should be afraid of doing that...watch below.

Amber Heard Confirms JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN Role, Talks About Her Costume

Early this year, a rumor popped up that actress Amber Heard would be playing the role of Mera in Warner Bros. and DC's cinematic universe. In the comics, Mera is a badass warrior who becomes Aquaman's wife. The rumor indicated that Mera would first appear in Justice League — Part 1 before playing the female lead in the Aquaman solo film.

Now Heard herself has confirmed all of those rumors, and in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight (via CS), she spoke about her costume:

“It’s interesting. It’s like, half suit of armor, half scales. It’s strange…We’re in the process of building it now, so it’s coming along.”

Sounds like it'll be comparable to what we've seen of Jason Momoa's Aquaman costume thus far. I haven't really been a fan of anything Heard has done in her career thus far, but I'm hoping it's just because she hasn't been a good fit with the material; maybe playing a warrior badass will be more up her alley.

Zack Snyder is directing Justice League — Part 1, which is scheduled to hit theaters on November 10, 2017, and James Wan is directing Aquaman, which will arrive on July 27, 2018.

Hilarious New Trailer For SILICON VALLEY Season 3

April 24th is going to be a great day. Not only do we get to see the season six premiere of Game of Thrones, but immediately afterwards, HBO is airing the season three premiere of Silicon Valley, one of the funniest shows I've seen in years.

The great ensemble cast — which includes Thomas Middleditch, Zach Woods, T.J. Miller, Kumail Nanjiani, Martin Starr, and more — looks to have replaced that douchebag billionaire character from last season with character actor Stephen Tobolowsky, who always improves any project in which he appears. Check out the antics of the Pied Piper crew in the new trailer below:

23 Things You Know From STAR WARS That Weren't Ever in The Movie(s)

Tell me if this sounds familiar: you follow the development of a movie online for years, and go see a screening of it with a group of friends when it comes out. Right after the movie ends, as you stand around talking about it, you refer to a character by name and everyone looks at you and says, "Wait, who?" See, you know the names of all of the characters because you've read interviews with the filmmakers and seen casting rumors for years, but those names may not be spoken very often — or at all — in the final movie itself, leaving everyone else a little confused.

This phenomenon just happened to me and my family with the Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and for those of you who grew up with the original trilogy, it may have happened to you back then, too. Things like Ewoks, Sith, and AT-ATs burrowed their way into the nerd pop culture lexicon, but they weren't ever actually referred to by name in the original trilogy. Dorkly put together a video of 23 things that you didn't know weren't actually in Star Wars, and there are a few that blew my mind.

Did you know that the iconic Imperial March didn't appear at all in the original Star Wars? That's the biggest shocker for me.

Netflix Debuts First Teaser Trailer For Marvel's LUKE CAGE

Marvel and Netflix have released the first teaser trailer for Luke Cage, the latest street-level MCU series that follows in the footsteps of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

Daredevil's second season hit the streaming service today, and after viewers wrap up the very last episode, the Luke Cage teaser begins to autoplay. Netflix subscribers can watch the teaser right here. If you're not a subscriber, it's quick enough for me to describe it for you:

Cage walks into a gym filled with gun-toting thugs and says "I guess you guys haven't heard about me" before they open fire, blasting him and everything around him with bullets. Cage, of course, is unfazed, and when the shooting stops, he says, "I'm about sick of always having to buy new clothes." Then one of the thugs goes crashing through a window, and the logo comes up on screen. EW helpfully created some gifs of the teaser:

Luke Cage is set to premiere on September 30, 2016.

Spielberg Hires David Koepp To Write INDIANA JONES 5

$

THR is reporting that Steven Spielberg has hired writer David Koepp to pen the screenplay for the recently-announced Indiana Jones 5, which is set to be released in theaters on July 19, 2019. Koepp's filmography is all over the place, with films like Jurassic Park, The Shadow, Mission: Impossible, Stir of Echoes, Spider-Man, Secret Window, War of the Worlds, Premium Rush, and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit among his many credits.

Also among his credits: Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which is a huge red flag for this upcoming movie. The only thing that gives me a little bit of hope is that George Lucas reportedly won't be involved in this one, and it was famously Lucas's idea to include aliens in that fourth entry — a decision Spielberg and Harrison Ford both resisted for years before ultimately giving in. At this point, no one knows whether Koepp will be generating a totally new idea on his own here, or whether he'll be working from a treatment or outline that already exists.

I guess it could be worse. At least it's not Akiva Goldsman.

Jonah Hill and Emma Stone To Star in New TV Series For TRUE DETECTIVE's Cary Fukunaga

Looks like a Superbad reunion is brewing. THR reports that Emma Stone and Jonah Hill (who both got their big breaks in the Greg Mottola-directed comedy) are set to star in a new TV series for Beasts of No Nation director Cary Fukunaga, who made a big splash directing all of the episodes of the first season of HBO's critically acclaimed True Detective.

Described as a dark comedy that's based on a 2014 Norwegian series called Maniac, the show "revolves around Espen, a mental patient at the psychiatric ward who escapes reality and lives in a fantasy world in his mind." The search for a writer is underway, and the plan is for Fukunaga to direct every episodes of this show, which is hoping to snag a two-season pickup right out of the gate. Stone and Hill would executive produce alongside the director.

Here's the trailer for the Norwegian version. It's easy to see how Fukunaga could contrast some stunning visuals with the depressing interiors of a psych hospital:
