X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Heroes and Villains Spotlighted in 9 Empire Magazine Covers

x-men-apocalypse-heroes-and-villains-spotlighted-in-9-empire-magazine-covers

Earlier today we posted a new trailer for Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse, and it packed quite a powerful punch of awesomeness. Now Empire has released nine magazine covers featuring several of the heroes and villains from the film. These covers actually give us our best and most detailed look at some of the characters so far. The characters all look great, but I'm still not a fan of the uniforms they're wearing. I wish Singer would have finally gone with a more classic X-Men look. I'm still excited about the movie, though!

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to be released on May 27, 2016.

Common Reveals The Name of His Mysterious SUICIDE SQUAD Character

About ten months ago, actor/rapper Common was cast in David Ayer's upcoming supervillain movie Suicide Squad. But while we had a pretty good idea of which characters all of his co-stars would be playing, Common's role was a mystery to the blogosphere. Some fans speculated that he might be portraying Green Lantern, since he was cast as John Stewart in George Miller's Justice League: Mortal years ago before that project fell apart, but others thought he might be playing a villain called the Tattooed Man after he was spotted with tattoos covering his body on the set of the film.

Now, thanks to a new interview with Complex (at the 2:48 mark), we know the name of his character, but it's not one that's going to ring a bell for fans of DC Comics:

"My role is basically a character who's in business with The Joker. His name was Monster T."

"Monster T" doesn't pop up in a search of the wiki for DC Comics characters, so I guess we'll have to wait until Suicide Squad hits theaters to find out the extent of his character, whether or not Monster T is a code name for a better-known character, and how his interactions with Jared Leto's Joker will play into the story.

Suicide Squad arrives on August 5th.

Watch: Henry Cavill Rocks Superman Shirt But Isn't Recognized in Times Square

You might think that if people saw one of the stars of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on the sidewalk in one of the world's biggest cities, people would go nuts trying to get a selfie or an autograph with that star. With as addicted as our culture is to celebrity gossip and the borderline-unhealthy way many people worship actors, it's not an unreasonable assumption to make. But as this new video from Henry Cavill's Instagram reveals, that's not what happened when the actor wandered through New York City's Times Square yesterday.

EW points us to this clip below, which features Cavill donning a Superman shirt, surrounded by billboards and massive advertisements of himself promoting Batman v Superman, and not being noticed by a single person.

The obvious must be pointed out here: this is a heavily-edited piece of video, so it's possible that Cavill was actually recognized but he just left those parts out in order to make his joke about the glasses being a good enough disguise. (Besides, it'd be weird for a celebrity to post a video of themselves being hounded by fans.) But even if it did go down this way, it's not too surprising. Cavill certainly isn't a household name, and Times Square is the most touristy section of New York City — who knows how many of the people walking around that area at that time would have even recognized Tom Cruise or Will Smith standing on the street?

With so much riding on this movie, you have to think that WB would have much rather seen Cavill being swamped by fans instead of completely ignored here.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives in theaters next Friday, March 25th.

Dear Doubter, The glasses are good enough. Regards, Superman #WhoWillWin #Superman

THE HATEFUL EIGHT: Cool Side-By-Side Video Shows Off Some of Tarantino's Film References

Everyone knows that writer/director Quentin Tarantino is a voracious consumer of movies. Love him or hate him, he may be one of the most knowledgable people in the world about the topic, so you can be damn sure that he's going to include references and homages to classic films in the movies he makes. His latest film, The Hateful Eight, is chock full of them, and editor Ollie Paxton put together a cool side-by-side video compilation that shows just how closely he came to capturing some of these shots and repurposing them in his own story. (That Lawrence of Arabia one might be my favorite, just because of how it takes its time to get there.)

'90s Boy Bands Battle Zombies in Trailer For SyFy Western DEAD 7

Hear me out for a second: I think a big part of the reason Donald Drumpf (I don't even want to write his real name) is in the position he's in right now is because media outlets are constantly writing about him. For the past few months, I've scrolled past twenty or thirty articles per day about him in my Twitter feed thinking to myself, "If none of you want him to succeed, why don't you just stop talking about him? Don't give him the attention that he wants."

I'm not saying that SyFy's new western movie Dead 7 is going to be as bad as Drumpf, but I sort of have the same mentality about it: if I don't want it to succeed, why would I write about it at all? Well, it's a SyFy movie for one thing, so it's not necessarily taking eyes away from other films that are playing theatrically that I think are actually worthwhile. And it also looks pretty bad, so I doubt many of you will actually sit through this whole movie, but I figure a handful of you will watch the trailer, get a kick out of it (either genuinely or ironically), and be able to have something to talk about with your friends at the bar tonight during your St. Paddy's Day celebrations. So feast your eyes on the trailer for a western that stars members of '90s boy bands fighting zombies. Dead 7 comes to SyFy on April 1st at 8pm.

Watch: THE DARK KNIGHT Video Compares Storyboards to Final Film

Christopher Nolan's Batman sequel The Dark Knight is one of the best superhero movies ever made. Even if star Christian Bale feels his performance was lacking and he couldn't raise his game enough to match what Heath Ledger was doing as The Joker (he's kinda right about that last part), it's still an outrageously good movie, and I think a lot of people reading this site would point to it as one of their favorites.

Glass Distortion tracked down some of the film's storyboards for the truck sequence and put together a quick video showing how the final movie matches up to them. It's always cool to get a little peek behind the curtain into the development process, and since storyboards for big blockbusters don't make the rounds on movie blogs as much as VFX breakdowns or other aspects of filmmaking might, this should be nice for the artists out there to see how it all comes together.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Producer Denies R-Rated Home Video Cut is in Response to DEADPOOL Success

$

0

Director Zack Snyder and his producing partner/wife Deborah spoke with THR about the upcoming release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Deborah specifically addressed the idea of the R-rated home video release as a reaction to the box office success of the R-rated Deadpool:

"Online, everyone's like, 'Oh, they're doing an R-rated in reaction to Deadpool,' and you're like (laughing), 'We didn't just shoot it last week, and we also didn't edit it last week.'"

I'm not saying that she's lying, but I do want to point out that there's plenty of time before the final edit needs to be made for home video. I'm sure the decision was made to make the theatrical cut PG-13 a long time ago, and maybe that's what she's getting at here, but I think it's very feasible that the studio saw the reaction to Deadpool and said, "Yeah sure, go ahead with an R-rated cut for Blu-ray."

Zack added:

"The why of that is [the DVD version] is a half-hour longer, and some of that additional material is some of the stuff we took out for the rating. I was like, 'Cool, I can put it back in for the director's cut.' There was nothing by design. This was the material I just put back in, and then when [the MPAA] looked at it again, they were like, 'Oh, now the movie's rated R.' And, by the way, it's not a hard R. There's no nudity. There's a little bit of violence. It just tips the scale."

The director has already said that fans can expect the Blu-ray and DVD R-rated version to include a "giant" Easter egg that has something to do with Justice League, as well as deleted scenes involving Jena Malone's character, who was cut from the theatrical release (here's who she's reportedly playing).

Lastly, I just wanted to point this out because I thought it was strange. Snyder was asked whether he's ever annoyed by the comparisons between DC and Marvel films, and he said [emphasis mine]:

"No. You have these two giant comic book powers, and it would make sense that they would in some ways be compared to each other. It's like comparing Downton Abbey and Mr. Selfridge. Like Star Wars and Star Trek. Those are things that you could compare, but no one ever does. Those [DC versus Marvel] conversations are fun for the Internet. But in truth, it represents such a small group of people who are actually versed in the difference between DC and Marvel. The average moviegoer doesn’t know. Like my dad would be, 'Is Spider-Man ever going to be in any of your films?'"

I get his larger point — I think a lot of our parents and the average moviegoers are the same way — but saying that Star Wars and Star Trek "are two things you could compare, but no one ever does" is downright insane because it happens all the damn time. Like, I've been a part of probably twenty conversations IRL about it, and written maybe 10 articles about that on GeekTyrant alone. It's one of the biggest geek conversations out there. I have no clue how Snyder could think that no one ever compares those two. It's like saying no one ever compares Apple and Windows — it's an almost hilariously false statement.

Guillermo Del Toro To Direct Octavia Spencer in Otherworldly Cold War Film

Before Gullermo del Toro tackles Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, he will direct a Cold War-set movie for Fox Searchlight. The film doesn't have a title yet, but it is described as an "otherworldly love story" that "is set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963."

According to Variety, Octavia Spencer is in negotiations to star in the film, which starts shooting this summer. Apparently out of all the projects that del Toro has been looking to direct, this one was his top priority. It's great to see that it's moving forward.

I wish I knew more information about the movie, but I'm sure it's a supernatural film due to the fact that it deals with "otherworldly" subject matter.

Spencer's most recent role is in The Divergent Series: Allegiant. She also plays God in a movie called The Shack, which will be released later this year, and recently finished shooting Marc Webb’s Gifted opposite Chris Evans.

Del Toro most recently worked on the gothic thriller Crimson Peak. I'm most excited to see what he does with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which he is currently developing as well.

Nicolas Cage Set to Star in New Thriller PHILLY FURY

Nicolas Cage is movie making machine! It seems like every other week he is signing on to star in a new movie! The guy must love what he does. Deadline reports that he recently signed on to star in a thriller called Philly Fury. According to the report:

The story revolves around a Philadelphia businessman whose deadbeat brother is kidnapped for a large ransom. When everyone involved believes the deadbeat is in on the kidnapping, the businessman must take action himself.

Cage is taking on the role of a Philadelphia mobster who is the alleged kidnapper. This is a role that Cage should have no problem playing. Cage is such a versatile actor and has played so many different kinds of characters in his career. Sometimes he gives an amazing performance, and sometimes, he is just absolutely awful. You never know what you're gonna get from Cage, which is what makes watching his movies so fun and interesting.

Philly Fury is being directed by Steven C. Miller from a script written by Jason Mosberg. This film concept isn't new. We've seen it before, but maybe they'll put a unique spin on it.

Cage will next star in the Mario Van Peebles-directed USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, which tells the terrifying story recounted by Quint in Steven Spielberg's Jaws

Marvel Comics has finally revealed the two opposing sides of superheroes in their upcoming event series, Civil War II. The story revolves around a new Inhuman who has the ability to see crimes before they occur. It's got that little Minority Report twist to it. The superheroes are then put in a situation where that have choose whether or not to use this Inhuman’s power to wield “predictive justice.”

The heroes in favor of predictive justice and part of the "change the future" side are led by Captain Marvel. She is joined by the Winter Soldier, the Blue Marvel, She-Hulk,  Spectrum, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, Medusa, Vision, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Captain America (Steve Rogers), and War Machine.

The heroes who are against it, who are part of the “protect the future” side are led by Iron Man. He is joined by Deadpool, Hulk (Amadeus Cho), Black Widow, Captain America (Sam Wilson), Hercules, Luke Cage, Miss America, Daredevil, Black Panther, Thor, and Star-Lord. This is the team that believes that crimes shouldn’t be punished before they occur and that time should be allowed to unfold unaltered.

Civil War II #1 was written by Brian Michael Bendis with art created by David Marquez, and it will be released in June.

Watch 6 Intense Clips from BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

For those of you who can't wait until March 25th to watch Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I've got six new clips from the film for you to watch right now. Most of them are pretty damn awesome, and they give you a better sense of the what the film will be like. It looks to me like Zack Snyder nailed it.

The first clip features Lex Luthor talking to Superman about how excited he is to see him fight Batman to the death. Clip number two offers us an extended look at Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent's interaction at the party scene. The third clip centers on Lois Lane, who is talking to Perry White about a story regarding an untraceable bullet used during a desert firefight. In the fourth clip, Bruce is talking to Alfred about how pissed off his is at Superman and that he needs to be taken out. The fifth clip show Superman and Batman battling it out on a city rooftop. Then in the final clip, Bruce confronts Diana about how stealing is not polite.

These are worth watching if you're excited for the movie, and they should tide you over until the movie is released in about a week.

Simon Pegg to Join Steven Spielberg's READY PLAYER ONE

It looks like Simon Pegg will be joining Steven Spielberg's next sci-fi film project, Ready Player One. The actor is currently in negotiations to play a character named Orgen Morrow. Pegg will join the previously cast Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, and Ben Mendelsohn.

The story is set in a virtual world called Oasis, and it centers on a teenager (Sheridan) who finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless individuals after the game's founder dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize to the winner.

Pegg's character Orgen is the co-creator of this Oasis virtual world. I'm really excited about this movie, and I can't wait to see what Spielberg does with it. I love Spielberg's storytelling style, and I'm looking forward to seeing some of his signature magic up on the big screen again.

Pegg and Spielberg worked together on the film The Adventures of Tintin, and it's great the two will be working together again. I'm a fan of Pegg, and there's no doubt he'll be great in the movie.

The movie is an adaptation of the book written by Ernest Cline, and it will be released on March 30th, 2018. Here's the description of the story:

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

New TV Spot for WARCRAFT: War Is Coming

Another TV spot for Warcraft has been released by Legendary Pictures and by the look of it, the movie seems to be really promising. Fingers crossed! Judging from what is depicted in the newest footage, the alliance between humans and orcs still looks kind of impossible.

The story takes place in Azeroth – a realm that used to exist in peace but now stands on the verge of an epic war. The population there, led by the humans, has to face a nation of mighty orc warriors and their families that leave their dying world in attempt to find a new and non-violent place to live in. Two worlds will collide. Two worlds will either see their own destruction or rescue because it’s not winter that is coming here. It’s war.

Warcraft is directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and written by Charles Leavitt and Jones. The movie cast includes Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky, and Daniel Wu. It debuts on June 10, 2016.

I know Warcraft will shock and awe fans with its storyline, characters, and great CGI. So I’m not having any troubles with being excited about this one!

Those of you who aren't big fans of the new Spider-Man we were introduced to the last trailer for Captain America: Civil War are gonna love this alternate ending. The video was created by YouTube user Mightyraccoon!, and it sure did make me bust out in laughter.

Yeah, Tony Stark thought he was so smart and clever calling in Spider-Man for a little assistance. One of the members of Captain America's team isn't amused, though. Watch how he perfectly handles the situation in the video below!

I've seen a lot of parody videos of this Spider-Man reveal, but this... this is my favorite.

Will Jay & Silent Bob Make a Cameo in Kevin Smith's Episode of THE FLASH?

As most of you probably already know, Kevin Smith is currently directing an episode of The Flash for The CW. This is the first time that Smith has actually directed something based on a comic book property, which is crazy because he is such a huge comic book geek. You would have thought he'd get around to it sooner. But he's doing it now, and it looks like he might incorporate two of his classic characters into the episode he's working on.

Smith posted a photo of himself with his long-time friend and on-screen buddy Jason Mewes standing in front CC Jitters, which is a signature coffee shop in Central City. He doesn't come right out and say it, but he could possibly be teasing a cameo by Jay & Silent Bob, which wouldn't surprise me at all if it happens. Of course, the two friends could be hanging out on the set just for the hell of it.

We probably won't find out for sure until the episode is released. The episode was written by Thor writer Zach Stentz, and there are no details on what it will be about, but it will air in May of 2016.

Went for some coffee at #ccjitters and found @jayandsilentbob loitering in front of the store. Yesterday was a productive Day 2 on the episode of #TheFlash that I'm "directing", with the cast, crew & I shooting four different scenes in the Cortex and Medical Bay at #StarLabs! I call it "directing" because neither cast nor crew need my guidance here to make something great. We shot some big little scenes yesterday that will break your heart and speed-force it back together again in that way only #TheFlash can. I love this show, so seeing how it really happens behind the scenes has been nothing short of thrilling. We start Day 3 of 8 in a couple of hours... #KevinSmith #jaymewes #centralcity #vancouver #jayandsilentbob #runbarryrun #funbarryfun

YouTube user Darth Blender has created an awesome retro fan trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice using footage from classic 1940s Superman and Batman serials. As you'll see, the end result is remarkably spectacular. They even managed to throw in Godzilla in the place of Doomsday and Lynda Carter's version of Wonder Woman.

1940s were great for American movies: Hitchcock, Capra, Welles, Wyler, Bogart, the film noir genre... And why not superhero movies? Kirk Allyn stars the most awaited movie of a decade: Batman vs Superman - Coming soon.

This video brought happiness into my life today. I hope it does the same for you!
