Watch: Commercial For Nike's New Power Lacing Shoes

$

The future is now.

Nike has unveiled a new look at the company's brand new power lacing shoes. These aren't the Nike Air Mags from Back to the Future Part 2, they're an entirely new line called the HyperAdapt 1.0. Take a quick look at the video, then continue on for some more info:

On this model, you'll be able to step into the shoes, hit a sensor in the heel, and the shoes will automatically tighten. There are buttons on the sides that allow for customization so you can manually tighten and loosen them with a few quick pushes.

Tinker Hatfield, one of Nike's designers and the company's VP for Design and Special Projects, had this to say in a statement on Nike's website:

The potential of adaptive lacing for the athlete is huge, Hatfield adds, as it would provide tailored-to-the-moment custom fit. “It is amazing to consider a shoe that senses what the body needs in real-time. That eliminates a multitude of distractions, including mental attrition, and thus truly benefits performance.”
He concludes, “Wouldn’t it be great if a shoe, in the future, could sense when you needed to have it tighter or looser? Could it take you even tighter than you’d normally go if it senses you really need extra snugness in a quick maneuver? That’s where we’re headed. In the future, product will come alive.”

The shoes will be available during this year's holiday season only for Nike+ members, and they'll be in three colors.

GOTHAM Renewed for Season 3!

I'm happy to report that Fox has decided to renew their Batman origin story Gotham for a third season! I love what they are doing with this show, and it's great to know that the story of these characters will continue.

The show is doing well and is currently averaging 9 million viewers. The series ranks among this season’s top ten entertainment programs among men 18-49 and is in the season’s top five broadcast dramas among men 18-49 and men 18-34, according to Fox and Nielsen. David Madden, Fox’s President said this in a statement:

“It takes a very special team to tell the tales of Gotham. For the past two seasons, Bruno, Danny and John have masterfully honored the mythology of Gotham and brought it to life with depth, emotion and memorable high drama."

Gotham follows Jim Gordon's rise through "a dangerously corrupt city teetering between good and evil, and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular superheroes of our time."

This is one of those shows that I don't want to end prematurely. Bruno Heller set out to tell the story of these characters and show the long road of Bruce Wayne and his slow transformation into Batman as well as the villains he'll be taking on in the future. I just want to get to see Heller's vision for this series fully realized. The fact that we are getting a third season is a good sign.

Olivia Wilde Was Turned Down for WOLF OF WALL STREET Because She Was Too Old!?

I thought Margot Robbie was fantastic in the role of Naomi Lapaglia in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. That role could have gone to another great actress, though, if she hadn’t been too old for the part. That actress is Tron: Legacy’s Olivia Wilde, and in an interview with the Howard Stern Show, she talked about her experience with finding out this news, saying:

“I had heard for a part that I was too sophisticated. I was like, oh, that sounds nice … and then I found out later that they actually said ‘old.’ ‘Sophisticated’ might be a code word in Hollywood — for ‘old.’”

Wilde was 28 years old at the time, and I don’t know about you, but I think she looks great! I can totally imagine her in the role as well. 28 is also actually closer to the age of the real life of Naomi Lapaglia, whose real name is Nadine Caridi. She was 29 years old when she married Jordan Belfort in 1991.

Robbie was 22 years old when she shot the film, and she was 16 years younger than Leonardo DiCaprio. I’m a big fan of Robbie, but at the same time, I think it’s crazy how Hollywood thinks that a beautiful 28-years-old actress like Wilde was deemed too old for this part.

There is a happy ending to Wilde’s story, though! That audition for The Wolf of Wall Street helped her land her a dream job on the HBO series Vinyl. She also loved what Robbie did in the role. After the interview she tweeted out the following:

LOBO Film Moves Into Development with WONDER WOMAN Screenwriter

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment's feature film adaptation of the comic book Lobo is back in development! There hasn't been much news on the project since Dwayne Johnson confirmed he might play the title character back in 2012.

According to TheWrap, the studio has hired Wonder Woman screenwriter Jason Fuchs to write the script for the movie. They must have liked what he did with Gal Gadot and Chris Pine's upcoming film.

According to the report, Fuchs is going to start from scratch on the script with his own take on Lobo. Just in case you need a reminder, Lobo is a comic book character from the '90s and is an alien who works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter.

The site says that Brad Peyton (San Andreas) is signed on to direct the movie, which he's been attached to since 2012. Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are also still producing. The report doesn't mention anything about Johnson still being involved, but with Peyton still on board, I guess there's still a chance.

Studio Ghibli Adapts Ancient 12th Century Manga into an Animated Short

The legendary Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli has created a magnificent short film that you've got to see. They beautifully adapt an ancient 12th Century picture scroll. The story is called Choju Jinbutsu Giga, and according to Mashable, it’s considered as being “the earliest records of Japanese manga.” I included a couple images from the original scroll below the video. It’s pretty damn cool seeing it brought to life like this.

The short was commissioned by Japanese energy company Marubeni Shin Denryoku as a commercial, and the purpose was to highlight the ecological issues that the modern world is quick to forget about.

This should tide you over until we see anything from the film project that they’re currently working on called The Red Turtle.

"You're not students anymore. You're X-Men!"

20th Century Fox has just unleashed the new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, and it's spectacularly intense and action-packed! This seriously looks like it's going to be the most epic and powerful X-Men movie we've seen yet. It's got Apocalypse bringing together the Four Horsemen to bring to pass the end of the world. Then we have a young group of X-Men being inspired and led into battle by Mystique to try and stop them. Watching this trailer gave me goosebumps, and I'm more excited than ever to see what director Bryan Singer has made for the fans.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

X-Men: Apocalypse also stars Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Lucas Till as Havok and newcomers Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Ben Hardy as Angel, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Lana Condor as Jubilee, and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27th, 2016.

Looks Like the Reboot of THE CROW Is in Trouble…Again

This reboot of James O'Barr comic series The Crow seems to have been doomed from the very beginning. This film project has been in development for years, and it’s never been able to move into production. Actors and directors have come and gone, and now it looks like an issue with the rights to the property may kill the project entirely.

I’m sure hardcore fans of Alex Proyas’ 1994 film won’t mind this news at all. Personally, I was kind of curious to how it would turn out, especially with the heavy involvement of its creator. The whole issue was brought on by the bankruptcy filled by Relativity Media. According to THR, Edward R. Pressman Film Corporation, which produced the first feature film adaptation of the comic, has filed papers in court to try to deny Relativity any sequel, prequel, or remake rights to the film.

The report also reveals that Edward R. Pressman Film Corporation originally optioned the rights to Relativity in 2009, and that was extended in 2014. When it was extended, they gave the studio three years to start production on a film. Things came pretty close a few times but nothing has happened. The Hallow director Corin Hardy was most recently attached to the film and was retained with a holding deal of $150,000 to direct it after the bankruptcy.

Apparently, when Dana Brunetti came in to run Relativity Media earlier this year, he fired Hardy from the project. This may have violated the initial agreement regarding The Crow film rights because Pressman proposed Hardy and Relativity agreed to hire him.

The future of The Crow in unclear, but it’s safe to say that the new movie isn’t going to happen anytime soon. It may be a few more years before something happens with the film... if anything happens at all. A Relativity spokesperson offered the following statement:

"With Dana coming aboard, we are giving him full creative rein. We want him to be able to reboot The Crow under his vision and guidance. We are optimistic he will create the best package for such an iconic franchise."

Yeah? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see about that, won't we. If The Crow does actually get made after all the crap it's gone through, it better be worth it.

The title was about the best way I could describe whatever THIS is. If I had an infinite amount of descriptors to really break it down I would say it's like Grindhouse without the gore and sci-fi that utilizes a classic muscle car chase scene. That really doesn't roll off the tongue so I went with what I had above.

Here's what doesn't need explaining. This is a music video directed by Seth Ickerman, and the song is "Turbo Killer" by Carpenter Brut! Enjoy!

WALKING DEAD Star Steven Yeun Set to Star in the Action Movie MAYHEM

Steven Yeun, the actor who plays Glenn on The Walking Dead, has landed the lead role in an action movie called Mayhem. He will be joined by Samara Weaving (The Babysitter) in the film. The is a big deal for Yeun because this is his first big leading movie role!

According to Variety, the film tells the story of “a virus that infects a corporate law office on the day attorney Derek Saunders (Yeun) is framed by a co-worker and wrongfully fired. The infection is capable of making people act out their wildest impulses. Trapped in the quarantined building, our hero is forced to savagely fight tooth and nail for not only his job but his life.”

The movie will be directed by Joe Lynch (Knights of Badassdomfrom a script written by Matias Caruso. The film project is being produced by Circle of Confusion production company, who also produces The Walking Dead, so it’s easy to see how Yeun landed the gig. I'm excited for him!

There’s no doubt that the actor is stoked about being involved with this project. The last movie that Yeun appeared in was I, Origins, but it was a pretty small role. I’m looking forward to seeing him take on his biggest role yet. Sounds like it will be a fun flick. I'm up for watching Yeun kick some ass!

The movie is set to start production later this month on location in Belgrade, Serbia.

Universal Studios is Building a Willy Wonka-Inspired Chocolate Factory!

Holy Snozzberries! I’ve got some pretty awesome new for all of you Willy Wonka fans out there. Universal Studios has announced that they will basically be building a Willy Wonka-inspired Chocolate Factory.

The Toothsome Chocolate Factory isn’t directly related to the book or the movies, but it’s a 19th century-themed Steampunk chocolate factory where you’ll easily be able to get your chocolate fix. It will include towering smoke stacks, funky gadgetry, and staff wearing unique Steampunk fashion.

Here’s some more information from the official announcement:

The food will take your imagination to new heights with a menu that features unique twists on classic steak, seafood and pasta entrees, gourmet burgers, sandwiches, incredible salads, all-day brunch and so much more. And the desserts will be simply…stunning.
Here’s a sneak peek of some of the milkshakes to get your mouth watering:
Chocolate x5: An explosion of chocolate with chocolate spirals, chunks, ice-cream and whipped cream.
Bacon Brittle: A fun twist on a breakfast favorite with bacon ice cream, bacon brittle, chocolate covered bacon and bacon caramel.
Espresso Buzzzz: A coffee lover’s dream with coffee ice-cream and chocolate covered beans.
Red Velvet: A milkshake topped with a Red Velvet cupcake… enough said.
Key Lime Pie: We’ve taken this classic Florida dessert and turned it into a delicious shake. You’ll even get a slice of pie on top!
The sundaes are anything but ordinary with flavors like Salted Caramel Flan, Chocolate Brownie Bark and S’mores. This extreme twist on a summer favorite features layers of chocolate ice-cream, chocolate sauce, marshmallow cream and graham crackers.

Then, like in Willy Wonka’s factory, you’ll be able to watch all of these wonderful chocolate creations being made, only in this instance, you don’t need a Golden Ticket to get in. I’ve included several pieces of concept art below including some of the wonderful food you’ll be able to eat.

The Chocolate Factory will open later this year, and I can’t wait to go!

CBS Believes New STAR TREK Series Will Help Net $400 Million in Streaming Revenue

CBS confidently told investors that, with the help of its new Star Trek series, they expect $400 million in revenue from their new streaming service. AP writes that the company also added they will be developing other new series for the service, but called Star Trek its "crown jewel" of the bunch. They also announced that they expect to have around 4 MILLION subscribers by the year 2020.

They must not read our comment section.

Look, I'm just telling it like it is, so to any legal team reading this: I'm not advocating or endorsing anything of any kind. Literally every time we write about this the top comment on our social media with at the least a dozen likes is someone saying they plan to pirate the series! People don't want to pay a fee for CBS! YOU'VE BEEN GIVING AWAY YOUR PRODUCT FOR FREE FOR THE PAST 60 YEARS! I don't think bringing back Patrick Stewart would convince people to watch at this point.

Seriously though, they are on crack if they think this idea is going to not only succeed, but flourish in the way they are planning. They have to be ignoring public opinion.

New Trailer for THE LEGEND OF TARZAN Is Dope

I'm sure I'll catch hell from a few readers for using "dope" in the title, but I gotta keep it real. This new trailer for The Legend Of Tarzan IS DOOOOPE. I'm super impressed with the high level production values they've put into this! Some of the things that impressed me most in this trailer...

  • The Tarzan/apes rope swinging sequence
  • All of the scenery
  • The gorilla clothesline
  • Native fight scene

Really the only thing I didn't care for was the wildebeests destroying the village sequence. It felt a little too Jumanji for me, but maybe I'll feel otherwise when I see the film. See it all in its majesty below and be ready for Alexander Skarsgard in The Legend Of Tarzan this July!

Science Behind What Makes Marvel Superheroes So Lethal Explored in Video Doc

$

There are over 5000 characters in the Marvel Universe, the majority of which are superheroes with extraordinary powers. A lot of these powers can be extremely dangerous. Heroes with these powers use them to fight evil, but still, they're deadly and could harm the people around them.

Screen Rant has released a short doc that explores certain aspects of the science behind the powers that these superheroes possess and how they could be lethal to the people around them.

Ask the average comic book or superhero movie fan to name the deadliest, most lethal, and brutal comic superheroes, and the same names will probably rise to the top: Wolverine is almost guaranteed to take the top spot, with insanely powerful heroes like Thor or the Hulk close behind. But those characters are only blessed with superpowers that let them destroy enemies one by one, with brute force, or directed attacks. But what about the heroes whose very abilities threaten the lives of everyone around them?

The movies won’t go into too much detail, since it’s the claw-slashers, punchers, kickers, and enchanted hammer-swingers that get the most attention. And usually, the least convenient side effects of a cool superpower are written off or ignored completely. But not by us. In the interest of giving the unsung heroes their time in the spotlight – and pointing out how the science of their superpowers poses a threat to everyone they meet – we’re taking a look at Marvel’s most lethal heroes in our latest Docu series.

The New XENA Will Likely Explore the Much Speculated Romance of the Original

Looks like fans of Xena will finally be getting what they want with the new series! THR is reporting that Javier Grillo-Marxuach, writer of the new series set for NBC, will explore a romantic relationship between Xena and Gabrielle! The original '90s series also explored this topic, but because it was the '90s it was mostly implied with no real overt romance showing. It was more like a sisterly thing if you check out the video below...

This brings up the question of whether Xena will be lesbian or bisexual. In the original series, if you were someone who subscribed to the low-key Gabrielle stuff, you would think she's clearly bi. Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Hopefully this retelling holds up to the quality of the original!

The Russo Brothers Talk About Spider-Man's "Unique Place" in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

If you don't instantly know the names Anthony and Joe Russo by now, you haven't been paying attention. The filmmakers are Marvel Studios' new golden boys: after directing the excellent Captain America: The Winter Soldier, they earned the directing gig for this year's Captain America: Civil War, and they're already developing the two-part Avengers sequel Infinity War.

In a new interview with Forbes, the directors talked about introducing a new version of Spider-Man to the MCU at the end of their new movie's most recent trailer, and how the character will fit in to the dynamic of Civil War:

Joe: We always intended to [introduce Spidey like that]. He was my favorite character growing up, I still have my collection of comics in my closet so it was a dream come true for us to be able to have Spidey in the movie and interpret him as a character so we couldn’t be more excited and we wanted to share that with everybody else.
Anthony: Also I think it was a little bit of a correction because it was a very complicated deal that Sony had to work out with Marvel Studios and Disney in order to make that work. We were very quiet about Spider-Man’s involvement in the movie for much longer than we would have been. We were artificially silent on the character because it was such a sensitive business deal still being worked out even while we were shooting. We went through a very thorough casting process, we tested Tom Holland vigorously with Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr,, we screen tested him along with several other actors, it was a very intense part of making Captain America: Civil War because he was an important part of the movie to us. Finally it’s all secure and we’re at a place where we can present him even in just a small taste.
Joe: We thought it was a great way to reveal him. I think people are going to be happy with him in the movie, he’s got a very interesting role in it.
Anthony: I’ll say this, part of the fun of Spider-Man is that this film is basically a war amongst the Avengers and Spidey does not have the baggage that all these other characters have. He enters the story after the conflict that is happening between the Avengers and that gives him a very unique place in the story.

Sounds cool to me. Meanwhile, fans went bonkers over Spider-Man's appearance in the trailer, but not all of them loved the webslinger's new costume. The Russos have seen that online controversy, and if you're one of those people who wasn't pleased with Spidey's new look, they say that you should wait to see the whole thing in context:

Joe: The design of the costume is what it is. That’s the design that we love, it’s the design that Kevin Feige loves and so on. He’s a very popular character so it’s always going to be controversial, people are always going to love or hate what you do with him, but all we can do is make sure that we love it, that we are true to ourselves and true to how we feel about the character and then hope that everybody else digs it.
Anthony: Part of issue is that we gave such a small impression of the character in that trailer, it’s something of a Rorschach test where people can pour as much of their Spidey anxieties out but when they see the movie they are going to get a very big picture of a very complete character that they have never seen before. It’s kind of hard to react to people’s reactions but they will change radically when they see the movie.
Joe: And there is still effects work that needs to be done on it.

So as usual, it's probably best to wait until we actually see the final movie before getting truly worked up about something. Thankfully, we don't have that much longer to wait. Captain America: Civil War arrives in theaters on May 6th. The whole interview is definitely worth reading if you're a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so check it out in full at Forbes.

ANNE DARK — A Female-Led Superhero Film Launched on Kickstarter

$

Let’s be honest, movies in which the main superhero is a female are quite uncommon. Films with female leads are thankfully becoming a bit more of a regular thing, but they rarely include a strong female character with superpowers as the lead hero. Even more rare? When that superhero is not only female, but also paranormal.

Anne Dark is intriguing live-action short superhero film that includes such a female as the central character. It tells the story of “a teen with dark superpowers, [who] fights against forces of darkness to save the world and enact revenge for her sister's death.” Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone into production yet and is still only a Kickstarter project.

Creator Brent Sims points out:

Anne Dark is my sophomore live-action short film with a scale twenty times larger than Grave Shivers and introduces the world to a strong female superhero role model which is rarely seen in modern cinema. Almost every scene of this magical story has practical and digital visual effects to bring it to life. I have assembled an international cast and crew of some of the most talented and diverse professionals working in entertainment today to create a female driven paranormal superhero project. If the 80s, Hellboy, Dune, and Buffy had a badass lovechild it would be Anne Dark.

The story sounds really interesting and the concept art is pretty cool. You can take a look at the video and images below and tell us what you think about it.

The Russos Talk AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, Costume Changes, and How to Recast Iron Man

$

The Russo Brothers are about to dive deep into doing press for Captain America: Civil War, but with the two-part Avengers: Infinity War movies just over the horizon, fans are desperate for any scraps of info they can get. Anthony and Joe Russo sat down with Forbes for a long interview that covered many different topics, and they touched on which characters we might see pop up in Infinity War

Anthony: There are certain characters you don't know.
Joe: New characters that are going to appear in Avengers: Infinity War. It’s a big sprawling ambitious movie, it’s about as ambitious as movies get and it should be, and the title alone indicates that there will be an incredible scape [sic] and scope to it.
Anthony: It is intended to be the entire culmination of the Marvel cinematic universe and, in many ways, the end to that part of it. But we don’t even have the first draft in on that script yet; we’re still in the outline phase. It’s hard not to talk about it too specifically now only because of spoilers but also because we’re still figuring it out.

The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't been fully announced beyond the year 2020, and many fans are wondering if Infinity War will mark the last time we see some of the current actors playing the heroes they've become known for. When asked about possibly replacing the actors and recasting those characters down the line, Joe had an interesting response:

It’s almost impossible to replace Robert, he’s the biggest movie star in the world. One close up from Robert is worth another actor’s entire performance, he’s incredibly gifted and insanely talented. I think if and when he is done with the character I think you will find that Iron Man might disappear for a while. I think the only way that you could reboot that character is to give a generational gap that would allow another actor to at least have a chance to redefine that character without the enormous spectre of Robert hanging over it. There are so many characters in the Marvel universe that can pick up the ball and run without it through the next phase or two before you need to see Iron Man again, frankly.

I never even considered that Marvel Studios might be willing to essentially sideline what might be its most popular character for a decade to give the audience time to get used to the idea of a different actor eventually stepping into the role, but if any studio would actually make that decision (which, by the way, is the right decision), it's Marvel. Hopefully that's how it'll actually go down once Downey is ready to call it quits.

I wrote about the duo's comments about Spider-Man's upcoming appearance in Civil War earlier this morning, but they addressed whether or not Spidey's costume might change and evolve if he were to appear in Infinity War (which, let's be real, he's definitely going to appear in Infinity War):

Joe: Without question. We like making strong choices with characters so while this might be a slightly more traditional, Steve Ditko influenced suit, it is certainly in our vocabulary to develop it into something more extreme as the storytelling requires. I think there are things that people will discover when they see the film about why the suit operate the way it does, why the eyes move, all that stuff is substantiated. Everybody wants the answers yesterday but then what would be the point of seeing the movie?

There's one more quick Civil War tidbit that's worth talking about. When asked whether we'd see Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange show up in a Civil War post-credits scene, here's how Joe responded:

We can’t say who is going to be in it but we can say that there certainly could be one, or two, maybe three. We can confirm that you should stay sat in your seats when the movie is done.

As if any true Marvel fan would ever walk out of a theater right when the credits started rolling! We're eight years into this interconnected universe, and I think by now everyone knows to stick around and see what teases await us after the credits finish. I look forward to analyzing it to death as soon as I get out of the theater!

Civil War opens on May 6, 2016, Infinity War — Part 1 opens on May 4, 2018, and Infinity War — Part 2 hits theaters on May 3, 2019.
