JUSTICE LEAGUE Won't Be as Dark as BATMAN V SUPERMAN

justice-league-wont-be-as-dark-as-batman-v-superman

One thing that Warner Bros. has liked to do with their superhero films is give them a dark, gritty, serious tone. We are definitely going to heavily see that in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. People have said those are some of the things that set them apart from what Marvel is doing. But WB doesn't plan on making all of their superhero films that dark.

During a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Batman v Superman screenwriter Chris Terrio says that he's going to be changing things up with the tone for Justice League, which he is also writing. He explains that he sees Batman v Superman as the middle part of a trilogy with Man of Steel and Justice League. As we all know, in most cases, the middle part of a trilogy is usually the darkest, and the plan is to lighten things up with Justice League. He says:

“Batman v Superman is a bit of an Empire Strikes Back or Two Towers or any similar middle film in a trilogy. The middle film tends to be the darkest one. I do think from Man of Steel through Justice League, it is one saga really.
“I expect Justice League will be tonally not quite as dark as Batman v Superman. From that point of view, I felt compelled to go back and try to lift us and myself into a different tonal place because I think when you write a darker film, sometimes you want to redeem it all a bit.”

It's good to know that he feels this way. We don't need a bunch of depressing dark superhero movies. Marvel has proven that you can lighten things up and have a ton of fun. That's something I wouldn't mind seeing with Justice League. I'm just excited to see where this all goes and how far Warner Bros. actually takes this plan they've put together.

The first Justice League movie will be released on November 17, 2017 and the second one will be released on June 14, 2019.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR — Easter Eggs and References From The New Trailer

Yesterday, fans were treated to an incredible new trailer for Marvel's Captain America: Civil Warand a lot of us spent time picking it apart trying to find certain things that we didn't want to miss. I even went through it frame by frame and posted over a 100 screenshots looking for any signs of awesomeness that might be hidden in it. Now, Mr. Sunday Movies has released a video that points out ten Easter eggs and references in the film trailer that you might have missed. He says:

Captain America: Civil War trailer 2 is here! Check out all the Easter Eggs, References, Things Missed (not six but ten!), as well as a closer look at Spider-man and which Avengers he’ll side with! Team Cap or Team Iron man?

As well as that there’s detail on what turns Black Panther against Bucky, how many people were killed in The Avengers in 2012, Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014 and Avengers Age Of Ultron in 2015. Not the mention the BILLIONS of dollars in property damaged caused.

There’s also a mystery marvel character lurking in the background of a few shots, confirmation that Hydra will be heavily involved in the plot with the inclusion of Crossbones and a logo. We also get a Ant-man leaping off a Hawkeye arrow (who’s also rumoured to become giant man) as well as confirmation that Scarlett Witch is powerful enough to subdue The Vision. Which makes sense considering both of their powers stem from the same Infinity Stone.

SPIDER-MAN ALSO! Let’s break down the new costume! It’s very reminiscent of Alex Ross and Steve Ditko, has a more traditional logo, adjustable white eyes, mechanical web shooters and a belt that presumably holds web refills! Exciting times. Exciting times for everyone. Thanks for watching!

There are a couple things that he points out that I didn't notice. It's worth checking out when you get a chance!

Jena Malone's Role in BATMAN V SUPERMAN Has Leaked Online

From the moment Sucker Punch actress Jena Malone stepped on set for Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans were speculating about who she was going to play in the film. We found out just a few days ago that her performance was cut from the theatrical release of the movie, but her character will reportedly appear on the R-rated Blu-ray when the film arrives on home video. Malone's character has leaked onto the internet, and while this could be considered spoilery information, it's not something that will actually spoil anything in the final movie, only an extended edition or deleted scene from the special features. In any case, if you don't want to know, turn back now.

A screenshot surfaced on Reddit (via Screencrush) that appears to be a marketing survey from Warner Bros. asking which characters they'd like to see more of in promotional materials. Check it out:

Assuming that this isn't fake, it indicates that Malone is playing Commissioner Gordon's daughter Barbara, who, in the comics, becomes Batgirl before being paralyzed by The Joker and turning into a wheelchair-bound tech guru with the code name of Oracle. That lines up with a report from Latino-Review from seven months ago, and the fact that Malone isn't in the movie now makes a lot more sense. If she is playing Barbara Gordon, it's almost a guarantee that Snyder recreated the scene from Alan Moore's The Killing Joke in which The Joker shoots and paralyzes Barbara, which seems a little extreme for a PG-13 rated blockbuster. But that sounds like a perfect added scene for an R-rated home video release, doesn't it? Personally, I'm not champing at the bit to see that particular story beat immortalized on film, but it remains to be seen if Malone is going to appear in the larger WB/DC cinematic universe beyond the bonus features of Batman v Superman.

Plus, by having Malone play Barbara and specifically not have her suit up as Batgirl, it allows Snyder to be able to point to his recent statement about Malone's character and say he was telling the truth:

I think we should keep [her character] private, but it’s nothing that’s been talked about. She’s definitely not Robin or Batgirl. I’m happy to say that.

As long as she doesn't wear the suit, he's technically telling the truth. Do you want to see Barbara's paralyzation play out in an R-rated cut of Batman v Superman?

Awesome STAR WARS Bushido Art By LuluDubYou

LuluDubYou went viral once before for their spoof of BB-Flakes, and I have a feeling this one will do the same! I am a big fan of this Bushido-style Star Wars: The Force Awakens art! I think my only complaint is that Rey isn't too identifiable, what with her Geisha gear, but I can learn to live with it! Great job!

See Ralph McQuarrie's Influence on STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Set and a BTS Pic From Rian Johnson

At this point, we know almost nothing about Star Wars: Episode VIII, and as someone who always regrets knowing every single thing about a movie before I see it, I'm really relishing this period in which we're not yet inundated with speculation and rumors.

Today, I have a couple of photos to share with you from the sets, but they don't give anything away or even provide any hints at the direction of the story. First up is a photo from writer/director Rian Johnson, who took to Tumblr to share an image of the set:

http://rcjohnso.tumblr.com/post/140845667440/cinematographer-steve-yedlin-hard-to-believe

That looks like the Millennium Falcon in the background, but it's unclear who's piloting it. If the end of The Force Awakens is any indication, it'll be Rey and Chewie, but anything's possible.

And here's a cool pic (via io9) from the film's set in Dubrovnik (the same place HBO shoots Game of Thrones) that specifically points to the tremendous influence of concept artist Ralph McQuarrie on this film (notice the design on the ceiling). McQuarrie is hugely responsible for the iconography of Star Wars as we know it, and had a massive impact on the look of the original trilogy and The Force Awakens. He died in 2012, but it's great to see that his work continues to inspire filmmakers in a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017.

No FX But What We Make: TERMINATOR GENISYS Gets a VFX Breakdown

Has anyone who saw Terminator Genisys thought about it for longer than a day or two after they first saw it in theaters? I didn't think the movie was as bad as it looked in the trailers, but as soon as I stopped writing my review, the movie basically evaporated from my memory. Arnold Schwarzenegger's performance is really the only worthwhile thing about it, and while that's somewhat enjoyable, it's not enough to sustain the entire film. But hey, maybe you're a fan of the film and want to see one of those cool VFX breakdowns that pop up online all the time. Today's your lucky day!

WTF: Now Tim Burton Says BEETLEJUICE 2 Isn't in Development

Earlier this morning, we wrote about how director Tim Burton told a site called ShowbizSpy that the long-brewing Beetlejuice 2 "is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team," seemingly taking fans one step closer to seeing a sequel to the 1988 comedy. But now Burton's rep is claiming that the filmmaker never gave a statement to ShowbizSpy, and not only that, but that the film is not even in development.

The Independent reached out to Burton's rep and came back with this:

"It turns out those eagerly anticipating a Beetlejuice sequel are having to wait a while longer; we received word from Tim Burton's spokesperson who said the following: "I rep Tim Burton and wanted to let you know that Tim did not provide a statement to confirm Beetlejuice 2 as the movie is not in development. Tim’s focus is entirely on Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children and developing Dumbo."

Is it possible that Burton's rep misspoke when they said that the sequel wasn't in development? Sure, but it seems like a representative for a filmmaker would have learned to be pretty specific when it comes to language and industry terms when releasing statements on his behalf. The thing is, we know that the film actually is — or, at least, was — in active development, because writers have been hired to write the screenplay, and Burton, Michael Keaton, and Winona Ryder have all openly talked about making the movie at one point or another. Has the whole project been scrapped altogether?

ShowbizSpy has updated their initial report from this morning to look like this:

[UPDATE] – A rep has gotten in contact with us and stated “Tim Burton did not confirm Beetlejuice 2 as the movie is not in development. Tim’s focus is entirely on Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children set for a September 30 2016 release and developing Dumbo“. That is all fine and we complied with the reps request to post their comment, however we did not say it was in development. We would also like to note that Warner Bros. hired writers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith to work on a sequel, and over the past year, both Ryder and Keaton have confirmed their participation according to Variety. So, it would seem there is something fishy going on here.

So...did they just make up that quote out of thin air? Possible. Also possible: Burton rescinded it, or maybe he spoke out of turn, or pissed someone off at Warner Bros. who wanted to contain this for some bureaucratic reason. Either way, it sounds like the movie that fans were so eager to see go into production is actually still far from the starting line.

Here's the weird part about all of this: I actually think it's good news that a sequel isn't in the works, because the original works fine by itself and the idea of resurrecting a movie or TV show years after its prime has had extremely mixed results recently. I haven't read the script, but I can't imagine there's any reason Beetlejuice 2 needs to exist other than to capitalize on the name recognition; I find it hard to believe there are going to be any themes or ideas in it that Burton couldn't explore in a different movie.

What do you think? Is Beetlejuice 2 really dead in the water, or do you think we'll eventually see it on the big screen one day?

I really need to step up my art knowledge, because this supercut from Vugar Efendi has definitively proven to me that I'm missing out on all sorts of references to paintings in movies. It's almost shocking how blatant some of these homages are, while others seem like a bit more of a stretch. Still, it's cool to see how directors manage to fit references to art that inspired them into films like this.

Watch: This Cheesy Song is The Way To Perfectly End Every Movie

Even if you think you've never heard Dire Straits' 1985 song "Walk of Life," I can almost guarantee you'll recognize it when that opening synthesizer riff comes alive. It's a brilliant representation of a specific kind of '80s music that sounded 100% earnest and genuine at the time of its release, but has since aged into a perfectly cheesy relic of the era. It also happens to be the perfect closing song for every single movie.

That's the theory behind the Walk of Life Project, a passion project for writer and editor Peter Salomone that edits the song over the closing credits of movies ranging from Casablanca to The Dark Knight Rises. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I found this to be one of those things that is pretty funny at first, actually loses its humor after a while, but then comes full swing all the way around to being hilarious.

We Need an Adult Version of This Batmobile Suitcase

we-need-an-adult-version-of-this-kids-batmobile-suitcase

This Batmobile suitcase is one of the coolest suitcases I’ve ever seen. As you can see, it’s based on the design from the upcoming film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. There are a few problems with it, though. First and foremost, it’s only for kids and there needs to be an adult-sized version of it. The suitcase is pretty small and unfortunately it doesn’t hold much. I guess functionality doesn’t really matter when you’re walking through the airport and everyone is envying your kid's badass suitcase...if the airport even allows it through security. After all, the suitcase comes complete with a miniature set of machine guns on the front.

The suitcase comes from Toy People, and if you want one, you’ll have to drop $100. If you’re all about the cool factor, then it’s definitely worth it. If you want something that actually manages to fit more than a pair of Batman pajamas and a water bottle, you might not want to drop that kind of cash on this thing.

Geena Davis is Returning to The Small Screen in THE EXORCIST

In the ever-evolving television world, the need for a big star for a new television show seems like a must. It appears that the TV version of The Exorcist has found their big name — sort of.

According to Deadline, Academy Award-winning Geena Davis has signed on to star in Fox’s pilot of The Exorcist. The show will be written by Jeremy Slater, and it's being called a “modern reinvention of the book." Here is rundown of Davis' character:

Davis will play Angela Rance. Naturally beautiful, regal and proud but weighed down by stress, Angela does everything she can to stay positive and keep her faith even though her family is currently struggling. She can’t help but think, however, if perhaps her nightmares about a demon are a sign of what’s wrong.

In this version, we are getting a whole new set of priests, played by Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels. We are also getting a new family for them to deal with.

I am a fan of the original movie, so I am mildly interested to see what they are going to do with this show. I am sure that shows like American Horror Story have paved the way for a show like this and I am sure they are going to try to push the boundaries just like AHS

Do you think we need another show in that genre? I am not sure that we do.

New Details and Casting Revealed For David Fincher’s MINDHUNTER Series

new-details-and-casting-revealed-for-david-finchers-mindhunter-series

Late last year, we learned that David Fincher and Charlize Theron were teaming up for a Netflix series called Mindhunter. Fincher has cast Holt McCallany (Lights Out) in the lead role; the actor previously worked with Fincher on films such as Alien 3 and Fight Club.

Mindhunter is based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It offers the behind the scenes story of some of Douglas’ highest-profile cases, which includes the man who hunted prostitutes in Alaska, a child murderer in Atlanta, and Seattle’s Green River killer.

According to Deadline, the series will be set in 1979, and that “centers on the inquisitive and skilled FBI Agent Bill Tench (McCallany). Along with fellow serial killer investigator in the behavioral science unit, FBI agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), Tench interviews serial killers to help them solve current murders.” The series will also co-star former Fringe actress Anna Torv, who plays a psychologist.

This is a perfect project for Fincher to latch onto and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. Here’s the description of the book:

He has hunted some of the most notorious and sadistic criminals of our time: The Trailside Killer in San Francisco, the Atlanta Child murderer. He has confronted, interviewed and researched dozens of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Richard Speck, John Wayne Gacy, and James Earl Ray – for a landmark study to understand their motives. To get inside their minds. He is Special Agent John Douglas, the model for law enforcement legend Jack Crawford in Thomas Harris’s thrillers Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs, and the man who ushered in a new age in behavioral science and criminal profiling. Recently retired after twenty-five years of service, John Douglas can finally tell his unique and compelling story.

McCallany will next be seen in Jack Reacher 2Clint Eastwood’s Sully, and Monster Trucks with Rob Lowe and Lucas Till.

Wonder Woman is finally going to make her feature film debut in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. After that, she is going to get the first of (probably) many solo films. With the excitement building up around the heroine, Variant has produced a video that breaks down some of the popular alternate versions of Wonder Woman.

It also offers us an interesting look at the history of the character. As I was watching the video, I was seeing some pretty cool Wonder Woman designs that would make for some great cosplay opportunities.

Marvel’s Iron Fist Netflix seems to be moving right along. Finn Jones (Game of Thrones) has been cast in the lead role, and now it seems like the rest of the supporting characters are starting to leak out. The series starts production next month and according to The Hashtag Show, Iron Fist might be joined by the following characters:

Shang-Chi:

Son and nemesis of the infamous Fu Manchu, Shang-Chi is a master martial artist who uses his exceptional skills to fight against injustice.

Colleen Wing:

Colleen Wing is a samurai and one half of the detective/bail-bond firm Daughters of the Dragon. She once dated Cyclops of the X-Men. She and Misty Knight co-own 'Heroes for Hire'.

Davos the Steel Serpent:

A fearsome an powerful martial artist and trainer of the Iron Fist legacy from the city of K'un-Lun.

It was also mentioned that Joy and Ward Meachum will be a part of the story. They are relatives of Harold Meachum, who killed Iron Fist's father Wendell Rand. He was Harold's business partner. In the comic, Danny Rand returns to New York as Iron Fist to seek revenge against Harold.

There's no official word on if these character will be included so treat this as a rumor for now. There's also no definitive word yet on when the series will premiere on Netflix.
