Best Sci-Fi Movie Face-Offs

0
0

As a big fan of sci-fi films, it's always awesome to see a great show down between the hero and the villain at the end of a movie. In anticipation of the release of Rian Johnson's awesome looking film Looper, in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt has to fight Bruce Willis, Complex has come up with a Top 10 list of best sci-fi movie face-off's.

I've included five of the ten entries below, make sure to head on over to Complex to see the complete list, which is pretty decent. Look it over and let us know if there are any other badass face-offs you can think of that you would add to it?!

Predator: Dutch vs. the Predator

"If it bleeds, we can kill it." Truer words were never spoken, Arnold. The movie's ultimate showdown is between the Predator and Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, Dutch (we know, it's a strange nickname for an Austrian). The intergalactic game hunter actually faces off with a gaggle of recognizable faces throughout the film, including Apollo Creed himself, Carl Weathers, Shane Black (the man who made action movie history with his sale of the script for Lethal Weapon) and former-wrestler-cum-Minnesota-governor Jesse Ventura. "The Body," as Jesse used to like to be called, titled his memoir after one of his character's most memorable quotes from the movie: "I ain't got time to bleed."

Aliens: Ripley vs. the Mother Alien

How do you improve upon a Ridley Scott classic that changed the face of sci-fi? Have James Cameron write and direct the sequel. Oh, and make the "Alien" in question plural. Nicely done. Along with a certain other part II (er, part V) later on this list, this epic 1986 sequel could qualify as the Godfather II of sci-fi action films in that many feel it's better than the original. Whatever your stance on Aliens, when Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), defending her little pal Newt, screams "get away from her, you bitch!" at the mother of all aliens (literally), you know it is on.

The Matrix Reloaded: Neo vs. Agent Smith(s)

OK, so maybe the Wachowski siblings went completely off the rails with the second and third installments of this ill-advised trilogy, but the promise of the original chapter—those 360-degree fight scenes and slow-mo bullet shots that would be ripped off ad nauseum for a decade to come—was fulfilled with the Neo vs. 1,000 Agent Smiths fight in The Matrix Reloaded. Honorable mention here goes to the first Neo vs. Smith showdown from The Matrix that led to Neo's death and resurrection (spoiler alert from 13 years ago!).

Terminator 2: Judgement Day: T-800 vs. T-1000

We told you Cameron was good at sequels! This 1991 follow-up managed to improve upon its own initial conceit, with Arnold's T-800 now being an antiquated model that's been reprogrammed and sent back from the future to protect the since-been-committed-to-a-mental-facility Sarah Connor and her now-teenage son, John Connor (who, as legend has it, will someday grown up to lead the resistance against the machines). The face-off this time is between Arnold and the T-1000, a new and improved "liquid metal" Terminator (played by the ever-creepy Robert Patrick) that can take the shape of anything it touches, and is seemingly impervious to any sort of gunshot. If only Skynet would send a cyborg back in time to tell Christian Bale not to do Terminator: Salvation.

The Empire Strikes Back: Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader

Okay, so we made a crack about Star Wars in the intro, but that was about Ewoks, which don't show up until part III (er, part VI). But before that, Empire had one of the greatest face-offs in cinematic history: Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader. If you don't know the piece of information that gets revealed in their epic lightsaber duel, then you must be from a pretty remote part of Tatooine. It pains us to say it, but this face-off is the sci-fi champ.

HOMELAND: The Complete First Season - Blu-ray Review

0
0

Homeland: The Complete First Season is out now on Blu-ray and DVD with perfect time to catch up with the show before season two airs on Showtime. This show is a prime reason to consider adding Showtime to your lineup of cable channels, for it has a extraordinary cast and a timely story line. The drama stars Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin, Jamey Sheridan, and James Rebhorn

The story follows Carrie Mathison (Danes), a brilliant CIA Analyst with a history of being a loose cannon. She thinks that a recently rescued U.S. POW Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody may actually be a member of Al Quaeda. Instead of a hero he may be a sleeper agent plotting a terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Mathison acts on a hunch, putting her reputation and sanity at risk to uncover the truth. The plot has so many layers and various clues, making the show great edge-of-your-seat entertainment.

There is some awesome symbolism with the opening sequence for the show, and I also love the music. It reminds me of the score used for David Fincher's The Game. Each episode jumps into action at a fast pace, and has a cool way of giving away small clues at the end of each episode. This gives the show a great sense of progression, and I actually feel as though the show is going somewhere. The characters are complex and multi-dimensional, and I can not get enough. This is one of the first shows that truly captures the political landscape of the Post-9-11 era. Homeland is one of the best psychological dramas that I have seen, and it could only be done justice on Showtime. Currently I do not subscribe to Showtime, but this is one show that would make me consider subscribing for.

The cast is superb, and I love seeing Danes in a serious meaty role. Her character is wounded and far from perfect, which makes her easy to relate to in many ways. Not only do you relate to her as an audience member, you see how the other characters can relate to her. Brody is played superbly by Lewis (Band of Brothers). Everytime that I see Patinkin on screen I feel the urge to scream "My Name is Inigo Montoya, You Killed my Father, Prepare to Die". All joking aside, Patinkin is perfect as the veteran CIA Agent. Morena Baccarin is beautiful and multi-layered as Brody's wife. I am glad to see she has a new series after V went down the tubes.

If you are like me, you don't always get to watch every episode of a series. The cool thing about this disc is that there is an option to play the discs in Season Fromat, which allows you to watch episodes back to back without going back to the menu. The disc also has some solid special features:.
  • Commentary on Pilot: The commentary track may only be for the pilot episode, but it is a solid commentary by Clair Danes and Damian Lewis, and showrunners Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa. It is a great way to take a closer look into the show after you have finished the entire first season.
  • Deleted Scenes (1080p): Each disc includes a short selection of excised scenes.
  • Week Ten - Prologue to Season Two (1080p, 3:53): This gives fans a short preview of what is to come in season two.
  • Homeland Season One: Under Surveillance (1080p, 33:46): This is one the best making-of documentaries I have seen for a TV show. It is short in length, but there is no filler. It covers everything from the origins of the show to the character development.

Homeland is one of those shows that I missed out watching from the beginning, and when I heard how great it was it was too late. There is a reason for the multiple Emmy nominations, it is a damn fine show. The characters are powerful and the plots read like they have been pulled right from a CIA playbook. The first season is on shelves now and for me it is a must own for fans of psychological dramas.

"Because Sadness Is A Temporary Condition."

Just in case you haven't got the hint that FX's American Horror Story: Asylum is going to insanely strange, here are three more promo teaser trailers that drive that point home.

The second season of the anthology horror series looks like it is going to be even better a crazier than the first. The story is set in an East Coast 1960s insane asylum, and as you can see from the trailer there's going to be a ton of trippy stuff going on there.

The series cast incudes Jessica Lange, Joseph Fiennes, James Cromwell, Adam Levine, Zachary Quinto, Chloe Sevigny, Evan Peters, Britne Oldford, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Chris Zylka, and Lizzie Brochere

Between this and The Walking Dead, we're going to have some great horror TV to watch during the Halloween season! Watch the teasers, and make sure to join the asylum party on Wednesday, October 17th!

I Present to You... The TARDIS Trash Can

For those of you looking to purchace a cool trash can, then your search is over! If you are willing to spend $90 dollars on a very small, but cool looking Doctor Who inspired TARDIS trash can from Think Geek...

Let's face it, when you're working your tail off refactoring code, writing up reports, diving into spreadsheets, or designing kickass graphics, you don't have time to clean... or even to empty your own garbage can. And so it happens... your garbage can becomes full, and then you start perching things on top of the ever-growing pile rather than actually empty the bin.

Wouldn't it be great if your garbage can was bigger on the inside? Like a TARDIS? Wish no longer, the TARDIS trash can is here! This office-sized trash can looks exactly like the Doctor's timey-wimey vehicle, complete with lights and sounds. Press the pedal to open the lid and hear the TARDIS materialize. Toss in your trash and as the lid closes, the TARDIS will dematerialize before your eyes! Just kidding, it'll just play the sound effect. After all, you want to be able to find it again after you're done eating your lunch.

Will you be purchacing one of these for yourself?

Last Thursday, director Craig Brewer (Footloose) flew from Memphis, Tennessee to Austin, Texas to join Ain't It Cool News founder Harry Knowles for a special IMAX screening of Steven Spielberg's classic action/adventure film Raiders of the Lost Ark. Brewer calls Raiders one of his favorite films of all time. That night, Brewer reminisced about how Raiders impacted his childhood, specifically his tenth birthday party. He also describes how fascinating Spielberg's filmmaking is and how well it held up on IMAX.

Do you have any favorite memories connected to Raiders of the Lost Ark?

KICK-ASS 2 Set Photos and Video Featuring Mother Russia

It was recently revealed that Mother Russia is being played by Russian bodybuilder Olga Kurklina in Jeff Wadlow's Kick-Ass 2. Here are a few photos and a video from the set of the film showing us what she looks like in her costume, and damn, she looks like she could really do some damage. The character is the bodyguard of the villain, Motherf***er, played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

The video footage features Mother Russia tearing off the door of a cop car. According to a description by someone who saw the scene play out, she then uses the door as a shield to protect herself from one of the cops shooting a gun at her, and then throws the door at another cop. This is one big woman.

The movie also stars Aaron Johnson, Chloë Moretz, Jim Carrey, Lyndsy Fonseca, Yancy Butler, Donald Faison, John Leguizamo, Lindy Booth,  Andy Nyman, and Nicolas Cage makes a cameo. The film hits domestic theaters on June 28th, 2013 and will be in UK theaters July 19th, 2013.

Would you fight a woman this big?

Wreck-It Ralph went out and got itself a new TV spot packed full of great new footage from the extremely fun looking film! We've also got a new poster for the film advertising its Boxing Day release date, so it must be a UK poster.

The movie was directed by Rich Moore (The Simpsons) and will feature the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah SilvermanJack McBrayer, and Jane LynchIt's set to hit theaters in 3D on November 2nd, and I can't wait to see it! Check out the latest spot!

Here's the synopsis:

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore (TV's "The Simpsons," "Futurama") take moviegoers on a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in "Wreck-It Ralph." Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," "Step Brothers") is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, "30 Rock"), the "good guy" star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades doing the same thing and seeing all the glory go to Felix, Ralph decides he's tired of playing the role of a bad guy. He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he's got what it takes to be a hero.

On his quest, he meets the tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch, TV's "Glee") from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty. But it’s the feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman, "The Sarah Silverman Program") from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, whose world is threatened when Ralph accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens the entire arcade. Will Ralph realize his dream and save the day before it’s too late?

LES MISERABLES - Extended TV Spot Released

Universal Pictures has released an extended TV spot for Tom Hooper's epic big screen musical adaptation of Les Misérables. I'm actually really excited about this movie. I was skeptical at first, but it looks like they really pulled off a great looking film, and it seems like most everyone is going to be able to pull off the singing. It's a nice new trailer, but I'm interested in hearing another song from the film.

The movie stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Miserables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

The movie is scheduled to be released on December 25th, enjoy the latest trailer! Are you looking forward to seeing this musical up on the big screen?

Detailed THANOS Concept Art from THE AVENGERS

Here's some great concept art from The Avengers that gives us a much better look at the design of Thanos in the film. He was surrounded by a lot of darkness in the movie, but here we get to see what the Mad Titan looks like in the light with his helmet off and in full costume. I love how menacing he looks! I can't wait to see the larger role he ends up playing in the Marvel movie universe! What do you think of the concept art?

New Line Cinema has released this wonderful new poster for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey featuring the Dwarf characters from the film that set out on the epic adventure with Bilbo Baggins.

The first film in the new Hobbit trilogy opens this holiday season, on December 14th, 2012. I have no doubt this is going to be The Hobbit adaptation we've all been waiting to see! For me, it's really cool because my favorite childhood book is finally being brought to life on the big screen! What was one of your favorite books as a kid that you'd like to see adapted into a movie?

The movie stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Evangeline Lilly, Andy Serkis, Richard Armitage, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O'Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, Aidan Turner and Billy Connolly.

Synopsis:

Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

DreamWorks Animation Unveils Poster for THE CROODS

DreamWorks Animation has released a new poster for their newest CG animated adventure The Croods. The movie was written and directed by Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, (Lilo & Stitch, How To Train your Dragon). Monty Python's John Cleese wrote the original script for the film, so hopefully it kept some of his fun humor. As for the voice cast, we've got Nicolas Cage, Ryan ReynoldsEmma Stone, Clark DukeCatherine Keener and Cloris Leachman

The film is set to be released on March 22nd, 2013, and I'm hoping the movie turns out good. DreamWorks Animation has always been hit or miss throughout the years. But they've been developing some pretty good films recently. We'll know more about the movie and what it will be like once the trailer is released.

Here's the Synopsis:

When their cave is destroyed, the Crood family is forced to embark on an epic adventure into a pre-historic world in search of a new home. With the help of a brash, know-it-all nomad named Guy, the Croods learn to conquer their fears and discover what it takes to survive – each other.

The Croods is a 3D comedy adventure from DreamWorks Animation that takes us back to the beginning - to a previously undiscovered era known as the Croodacious - a time when Mother Nature was still experimenting and the flora and fauna we know today hasn’t evolved yet. At the heart of this comedically chaotic world is the Crood family, led by Grug (Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage), an over-protective father who, like all dads, is doing all he can to hold his family together as the world around them changes at a dramatic pace.

Together with his wife (Catherine Keener), kids (Emma Stone and Clark Duke) and ornery mother-in-law (Cloris Leachman) in tow, Grug guides his family through this spectacular environment, full of amazing creatures, to find a new cave to call home. Along the way, they encounter Guy (Ryan Reynolds), an imaginative and resourceful newcomer who takes risks and wholeheartedly embraces the promise of tomorrow. Audiences will relate to the hilarious family antics as Guy helps the Croods navigate their way into the bright future.

Unused Sam Raimi SPIDER-MAN Trailer shows Web-Shooters

0
0

It looks like director Sam Raimi originally was going to use web-shooters in his version of Spider-Man. This unused trailer for the film includes a clip of Peter Parker trying out the web-shooters. Apparently this footage was shown exclusively at the Electronic Expo back in 2001.

I loved Raimi's vision of this character and how Spider-Man had organic web-shooters. It would have been interesting though to see how they worked the web-shooters into that story though, how that version of Parker would have invented them. I like how Marc Webb handled it in The Amazing Spider-Man.

Check out the old-school, unused promo trailer and hit us up with your thoughts! Would you have liked to see Raimi stick with the web-shooters?

SKYFALL has Two New TV Spots - Word and Fear

MGM has released two new TV spots for Skyfall. One of them is called "Word" the other is "Fear." It's also been announced that Sam Mendes' James Bond movie will be released in IMAX one day early in the U.S., on November 8th. The next day it will open up in all of the other theaters. Then there's the new character poster above featuring Q.

The script for the movie was written by previous Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, as well as John Logan (Gladiator, Coriolanus). It stars Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory, Ola Rapace and Tonia Sotiropoulou.

Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Enjoy the newest spots below and let us know if you'll be hitting up a midnight screening for this one!

Saiyan Saves Someone In China?

In a "Kamehamehuh?" that's rocking the web, a Chinese local news station has reportedly captured photo of a Saiyan in action! Is it legit? I don't speak Mandarin but if I did I would be calling 廢話 all the way to Beijing on everything this guy is saying. So thanks to the great deductive work of GT's finest, the original video has been traced to this Chinese video game site in which you can watch the entire video in full!

Why is Darth Vader on the Cover of Dirt Bike Magazine in 1977?

0
0

One thing we didn't know about Darth Vader was that he really enjoyed dirt biking. He loved it so much that he posed for the cover of Dirt Bike magazine back in October of 1977.

I guess when Podracing went out of style Vader got his adrenaline rush from killing little Jedi kids and dirt biking on the sand dunes of Tatooine. That's how hardcore he was! Too bad George Lucas never explored that part of Vader's life.

Creepy New TV Spot for SILENT HILL: REVELATION

0
0

A new nightmarish TV Spot has been released for the Michael J. Bassett-directed horror sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation. The new spot contains a few bits of new footage worth checking out. I'm a huge fan of the video game franchise, and the first movie. So my expectations are set pretty high for the sequel, I hope it lives up to them!

Synopsis:

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is based on the acclaimed survival horror videogame franchise by KONAMI and is the sequel to Hadida and Carmody's earlier Silent Hill directed by Christophe Gans. For years, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn't fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

The movie is set to be released in theaters on October 26th, watch the spot and let us know if you think the movie will live up to your expectations... if you have any.

Worst Movie Death Scene Ever And The Original Unedited Version

Yesterday a viral video sprung up on the web of the most painfully awkward death ever shot in cinematic history. Yes, I know there is a long list of those but we all know the internet deals in absolutes so forget the past and welcome the new "worst movie death scene ever" coming from the Turkish film Karateci Kiz. The viral version is hilarious, but not entirely accurate to the events in the movie. Upon viewing the actual clip from the film it appears that the "man scream" is not in the original, but still incredibly funny. Plus you get to see the events leading up to the scene (which starts at 2:09), which are just as hilarious. If you haven't seen the video circulating the web we threw that in as well so enjoy it!

Here's a fun video that features classic clips from Stanely Kubrick's The Shining re-edited with the laugh track and music from Seinfeld. It's funny what the addition of a laugh track can do to a movie like this, it's also a little unsettling. Hope you enjoy it!
