Christian Bale to Star in a Western Called HOSTILES

$

Christian Bale is re-teaming with writer and director Scott Cooper for a western called Hostiles. Bale and Cooper previously worked together on the film Out of the Furnace, and Cooper also directed the films Crazy Heart with Jeff Bridges and Black Mass with Johnny Depp.

Hostiles is set in 1892, and it tells the story of a “legendary Army captain, who agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from an isolated Army outpost in New Mexico to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape and hostile Comanche tribes that they encounter along the way.”

As a fan of westerns and frontier-themed adventures, I’m looking forward to this movie. Bale and Cooper are both talented as hell. L year, audiences enjoyed westerns such as The Hateful Eight and Bone Tomahawk, and I’m confident that we’ll have another great western to enjoy when this movie is released.

Production on the film is set to begin in July. Bale was previously attached to Michael Mann’s biopic Ferrari, which told the life story of automobile honcho Enzo Ferrari. He recently dropped out of the project, though, due to health issues when trying to gain weight for the part. This left his schedule wide open to jump on board Hostiles.

Hugo Strange and Penguin Talk About Tribulations in Clip from GOTHAM

With Gotham set to return next week, Fox has released a promo spot, clip, and collection of photos from their next episode titled “Wrath of the Villains: Mr. Freeze." I'm still enjoying this serie,s and it seems to just get better and better. I know not everyone agrees with me, but that doesn't stop me from watching it. Bruno Heller and his team are doing a great job with this show and developing these characters. Here's the brief plot summary of what the next episode entails.

“Penguin takes a hit for Galavan’s murder, but doesn’t let Gordon off easily. Meanwhile, Gordon and Bullock investigate the body-snatching spree of Victor Fries (guest star Nathan Darrow), one of Gotham’s preeminent cryogenics engineers.”

The clip directly below introduces us to Hugo Strange as he is meeting with the Penguin in Arkham Asylum.  In the meeting, the two talk about Penguins tribulations. Strange is definitely trying to push Penguin's buttons.

“Wrath of the Villains: Mr. Freeze” is set to premiere Monday, February 29th at 8:00pm ET/PT on FOX.

Ryan Reynolds appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden last night to participate in a funny comedy sketch. In it, James Cordon wants to get in on the Deadpool action, so he pitches several ridiculous ideas for a potential Deadpool sidekick and makes Reynolds watch him audition for each one. Reynolds also tweeted the photo above with the following caption:

"First day of shooting the NC-17 #deadpool team-up film."

It's been great to see the massive success that that Deadpool is having. This is what all the fans were hoping for when the movie was released, and I'm excited to see where the character goes from here. Reynolds might actually get to be Deadpool for the rest of his life!

HBO Renews VINYL for Second Season

One episode into its first season, HBO has already given the go ahead for a second season for Martin Scorsese's Vinyl. THR says the first episode didn't do remarkably well or anything, pulling in just a 1/4th under a million in viewership. The move is likely due to the names associated with the project (Mick Jagger is an executive producer), and the trouble HBO has had with Westworld.

Critics tended to bash the first episode, but I thoroughly enjoyed the two hour premiere! Scorsese always succeeds in showing me the classic New York City I wish I was a part of. I guess it's also appealing to me as someone who worked in radio as well to see the industry in its golden age. Also, Ray Romano?! C'mon he's great in this show. Check it out this Sunday if you haven't had a chance to do so yet.

Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams have announced today that they will be taking submissions for the official 2016 Star Wars Fan Film Awards. This is an annual event that encourages fans to create their own Star Wars themed short films. We've posted a lot of Star Wars fan films on the site over the years, and there are three recent films that I really enjoyed that you can watch by clicking on the following links: Kara, Rebel Scum, and Beyond the Dune Sea.

StarWars.com is currently taking submissions so if you have a film you want to enter, all you need to do is click here and follow the instructions.

In the Star Wars Fan Film Awards, fans create their own short films based on the stories and characters of a galaxy far, far away. Genres, tones, techniques, and styles are up to the imaginations of the entrants.

After a three-year hiatus, the Star Wars Fan Film Awards finally returned last year. The talent and inventiveness shown was impressive — most impressive — with films ranging from stop-motion comedies to live-action dramas. See some of the best videos below and stay tuned for more information on next year’s awards!

I've included the seven 2015 Star Wars Fan Film Award winners below Abrams' announcement video.

I swear the more news we've been hearing about Batman v Superman lately the better it sounds! Speaking of sounds, DCEU on Twitter managed to uncover something really cool about the soundtrack. Pretty cool right?

A couple weeks ago, we learned that the Legends of Tomorrow would be visiting Star City in the not-so-distant future. Actor Stephen Amell spilled the beans that we would be seeing a goatee'd Green Arrow, and now we get our first look from the set courtesy of Reddit!

I'm guessing this is not the polished Oliver Queen, as he's rocking a full beard and no super hero suit...or maybe this is the final product? We'll only know for certain here in a couple weeks! What do you think? Yay or nay to the look?

Jessica Chastain May Star in MOLLY'S GAME, Aaron Sorkin's Directorial Debut

Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin is set to make his directorial debut with a film called Molly's Game, which is based on a best-selling memoir of Molly Bloom, who put together one of the world's most elite high-stakes poker rings before it all came crashing down. Now it looks like he may have found one of the best actresses working today to play his leading lady: The Wrap reports that Jessica Chastain has been offered the role of Molly in the film.

Chastain understandably has a busy schedule already, but she's apparently working to try to make room for this project, which I think sounds like a great opportunity for her. She's worked with some of the best filmmakers in the world, but love him or hate him, nobody can write like Sorkin, and I think any actor would cherish the chance to deliver his stylized dialogue. If you read the synopsis of the book, it sounds like it could make a hell of a movie:

Molly Bloom reveals how she built one of the most exclusive, high-stakes underground poker games in the world—an insider’s story of excess and danger, glamour and greed.
In the late 2000s, Molly Bloom, a twentysomething petite brunette from Loveland Colorado, ran the highest stakes, most exclusive poker game Hollywood had ever seen—she was its mistress, its lion tamer, its agent, and its oxygen. Everyone wanted in, few were invited to play.
Hundreds of millions of dollars were won and lost at her table. Molly’s game became the game for those in the know—celebrities, business moguls, and millionaires. Molly staged her games in palatial suites with beautiful views and exquisite amenities. She flew privately, dined at exclusive restaurants, hobnobbed with the heads of Hollywood studios, was courted by handsome leading men, and was privy to the world’s most delicious gossip, until it all came crashing down around her.
Molly’s Game is a behind the scenes look at Molly’s game, the life she created, the life she lost, and what she learned in the process.

Watch Shia LaBeouf's Latest Performance Art: He's Riding in an Elevator for 24 Hours

A few months ago, Shia LaBeouf spent three days watching a marathon of all of his films in New York City as part of a performance art piece called #AllMyMovies. Our own Lucas Lowman spent a shocking 10 hours watching LaBeouf watch his own films, and wrote about the experience right here.

LaBeouf's latest piece of performance art is happening right now: from 9am this morning to 9am tomorrow morning (GMT), the actor and his collaborators Luke Turner and Nastja Säde Rönkkö are staying in an elevator at Oxford University in England, and just speaking with whoever comes in. It's just an open flow of conversation, and you can tune in and listen in the player below.

Over the past few minutes, he spoke about how they decided against a traditional speaking engagement at the campus; instead of standing on high and speaking to the students there (a method he called "outdated"), LaBeouf said he wanted to make it a more intimate discussion, so he opened the floor up to everyone by using the elevator as a place of discussion. He spoke about how he keeps in touch with the dude who played Beans from Even Stevens. And then he just spent five minutes talking about how he spent the first twelve years of his life literally crapping himself in public schools (after he was finished telling the story, he asked the people in the elevator with him: "Do you got anything that vulnerable?"). Who knows what's going to happen next?

Sounds Like [SPOILER] Might Be in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR After All

$

What follows might be a spoiler to some, but just for safety - SPOILER WARNING

There has been a lot of back and forth discussion regarding whether or not the Hulk/Bruce Banner would appear in Captain America: Civil War. The talk all started when actor Mark Ruffalo suggested that he was going to be in the movie. Robert Downey Jr. even suggested that he would be in the film, but that was followed by denial from several people involved with the film. Then Anthony Mackie said this during an interview with the Movies With Ali Plumb podcast:

"Having seen the movie, it’s Marvel’s best movie so far. And I’m being honest – if a Marvel movie sucks, a movie in the Marvel universe, I’ll tell you it sucked. Winter Soldier and (the first) Iron Man are probably Marvel’s two best movies, and I feel like (Civil War) beats both of those movies. It’s really, really good. It’s because it’s more of an acting movie than an action movie. I feel like the story is very concise and interesting, and you get to see Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannson and Mark Ruffalo and everybody just do really, really good acting. And then there’s action in it. I think it might be the first superhero movie that might be up for Best Picture."

Mackie clearly mentions that Mark Ruffalo is in the movie, and the fact that he's one of four people that he brings up in such a huge cast tells me maybe his role in the story will be a decent sized one. He did say we get to see him do "really, really good acting." This seems like pretty solid confirmation that Hulk/Bruce Banner will be in the film, but then there's a chance that Mackie doesn't know what he's talking about. The Hulk didn't really play a role in the Civil War comic book series, but that doesn't mean Marvel wouldn't include him in this movie.

CBM suggests that "it's perfectly feasible that we could see him unleashed as a secret weapon by one of the teams similar to how that Thor clone was utilized by Iron Man's forces in the comics." Banner would most definitely side with Tony Stark because the two characters have become pretty close friends over the course of the Marvel films. Maybe it will even help set up Hulk's involvement in Thor: Ragnarok. There are no concrete details on his involvement if it's true, so we'll just have to wait and see for ourselves.

I also want to point out that Mackie says he believes Civil War could be the first Super Hero movie that gets a Best Picture nomination. That's a pretty bold and awesome statement. That gives us an idea of just how great this movie could be, and it would be so freakin' cool if it was nominated for a Best Picture award. It's only a matter of time before it happens, I guess it could start with Captain America: Civil War.

The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6th. As a bonus, here's the recent cover for Empire Magazine!

Disney Releases First Poster and Motion Poster For PETE'S DRAGON

disney-releases-first-poster-and-motion-poster-for-petes-dragon1

I completely forgot that Disney was making a new Pete's Dragon movie, but then this promo material popped up and I got kind of excited again. Disney has released a poster for the film, along with the motion poster that features the dragon appearing behind a tree. I haven't watched the original 1977 film since I was a kid, but I remember enjoying it. This project has a very talented team of individuals behind it, and I'm curious to see how it turns out.

The movie is being directed by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) and it has a great cast of actors that includes Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), Oakes Fegley (This is Where I Leave You), Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games), Karl Urban (Star Trek), Oona Laurence (Southpaw), and Robert Redford (Captain America: The Winter Soldier).

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

The movie is based on the story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field and the script was written by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks. Disney’s Pete’s Dragon opens in theaters on August 12th, 2016.

See a Breakdown of DEADPOOL's Visual Effects

Update: A much better video has surfaced, and I've embedded that at the very bottom of this post. Original article follows:

Deadpool isn't quite as reliant on excessive visual effects as your typical X-Men movie, but it definitely has its fair share of them. (After all, the film's director, Tim Miller, started out in VFX.)

CGMeetup has posted a video breakdown of some of the film's effects, but it's not nearly as polished as some other VFX videos we've seen in the past — this one is entirely comprised of comparing finished screenshots from the movie to screenshots of earlier stages of development. Not super exciting, but for those of you who are still riding high after seeing the movie and jonesing for anything Deadpool-related, you may get something out of it.

Wired's video is much more enlightening:

THE STAND Movie is "In a Holding Pattern," and The TV Component Has Been Abandoned

$

0

Hollywood has been trying to adapt two of Stephen King's most famous stories — The Dark Tower and The Stand — for the big screen for years, but they both have run into the problem of the original source material being too long for a traditional movie. In the case of The Dark Tower, a movie is pushing forward (with a female lead being announced last night) and the idea of having a TV show air in between sequels is still in place. For The Stand, though, things are turning out to be a bit more difficult to pin down.

The latest plan we heard for that adaptation was that the story would begin as an eight-episode miniseries on Showtime before moving into four feature films, all of which I believe were to be written and directed by Josh Boone. Just the other day, though, Boone decided to direct a different King adaptation (Revival, starring Samuel L. Jackson) and put The Stand on the back burner. And now the future of The Stand is once again back up in the air.

Collider caught up with producer Roy Lee at DICE 2016, and Lee gave an update about the progress:

“Right now it’s just in a holding pattern trying to figure out how to best make the movie because we’ve toyed with breaking it up into multiple movies, making it into one, making it into two. The latest draft, Josh Boone had written it and he was very anxious to make it but since then has written another script, Revival, which he’s gonna do beforehand, so we’re just waiting for that.”

So that confirms everything we already knew. As for the TV show aspect of this adaptation? Well, it sounds like that's no longer happening:

“There was definitely talk about doing that but the logistics made it very difficult to try to do a worldwide launch of a movie when the TV component would not necessarily be released at the same time worldwide. So it became a logistic nightmare to try to figure that out, so that plan was abandoned.”

Makes sense. It was an ambitious idea to start with, and I'm not entirely convinced it's going to work for The Dark Tower, either. It's a massive project on a studio level, and it remains to be seen whether Warner Bros. actually wants to risk spending a ton of money on a franchise that isn't a guaranteed sure thing at this point, with Batman v Superman and Fantastic Beasts both yet to prove their worth. As for the whole four movie idea, it now sounds like that's off the table as well:

“That’s why we’ve been experimenting with trying to see what the one movie would look like. If you do the one movie, you obviously have to take out a big portion of the book, so trying to balance what to keep and what to cut out was a long process because there’s so much to go through. So that’s why it’s been a long process. Right now it’s written as two movies.”

So it's back to being just two movies again. We're now at the stage where we've experienced so many updates and so much back and forth that I'm not going to put much stock in anything anybody says until cameras actually start rolling on this production. Then it'll have my attention.

Boba Fett Admires His Alien Trophy in Sci-Fi Franchise Crossover Art

When an artist mixes two science fiction franchises like Star Wars and Predator, I'd have bet good money that the resulting piece would include Arnold Schwarzenegger in some way. The possibilities are seemingly endless: something titled "SchwarzeVader" instantly comes to mind, but I could easily imagine a piece of fan art that reimagines Arnold as a comical C-3PO or a ripped Luke Skywalker. But artist JP Valderrama (via XombieDirge) had something different in mind: a meeting of bounty hunter Boba Fett with a hunter from a different galaxy: the Predator himself. And as you can see, it's pretty obvious who the artist thinks would came out on top.

If you just can't get over the lack of Schwarzenegger, check out this video:

Emily Ratajkowski Joins Natalie Dormer's Revenge Thriller IN DARKNESS

$

Model/actress Emily Ratajkowski (Gone Girl, Entourage, We Are Your Friends) has lined up a new movie project, and it will team her with a pair of Game of Thrones alums.

Deadline reports that Ratajkowski has joined the cast of In Darkness, a revenge thriller co-written by and starring Natalie Dormer, who plays Margaery Tyrell on the HBO series, and also starring Ed Skrein, who played Daario Naharis before moving on to the Transporter reboot and the role of the villain in Deadpool. (Nymphomaniac Vol. 1's Stacy Martin also stars.)

The plot centers on Dormer's character, a blind musician named Sophia who is pulled into the underbelly of London when she hears a murder committed in the apartment overhead. Ratajkowski will play a character named Veronique, described as "the fractured daughter of the antagonist Radic, and is pivotal to Sophia’s quest for revenge."

I like revenge thrillers as much as the next person, but the real reason I'm interested in seeing this is because Dormer co-wrote the screenplay with director Anthony Byrne, and I'm interested to see how the movie turns out on a script level to see if Dormer should be taken seriously as a creative dual threat.

Meanwhile, Ratajkowski will play her first leading role in a 1980s-set romance called Cruise.
