New BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Photos, Concept Art, and Behind the Scenes Photos

Empire Magazine released some new photos from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on their iPad app, and DCEU Facts took screenshots and shared them on Twitter. Most of the photos and concepts haven't been seen before. We are less than two months away, and it seems so weird that it's almost here. I really hope the movie is not just a two hour trailer for the Justice League film.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice slugs it out in theaters March 25, 2016 (USA).

Gymnast + T-Rex Costume = "Jurassic Parkour"

I'm not sure what would motivate Reko Rivera to put on a T-Rex costume and do parkour and ninja warrior feats, but thankfully the team at Brentwood Photography was smart enough to film it. The two videos titled "American Ninja-Saurus!" and "Jurassic Parkour" are pretty short and chuckle worthy. If you're like me you'll end up watching them a couple times each.

Harrison Ford to Promote New STAR WARS Land in Disneyland Special

$

0

(Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.)

I don't know this for a fact, but it seems fairly likely that the main reason Harrison Ford returned to the Star Wars universe was so his character could finally be killed off. He's been wanting that to happen since the end of The Empire Strikes Back, and was famously not pleased with George Lucas's decision to keep Han Solo alive at the end of Return of the Jedi (a decision that we can't 100% say was made specifically to sell more toys, but we'll just say that Lucas benefitted tremendously in that department, so draw your own conclusions).

Whatever his motivations, Ford looked like he was having a great time in J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens, and I'm sure the folks at Disney are hoping he brings a bit of that same spark to their upcoming TV special The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60, which will celebrate the theme park's sixtieth anniversary. Ford is being brought in to give viewers a look at new details of the Star Wars Lands that are being built in the California and Florida parks, but it remains to be seen whether he'll be excited enough about this to bring any passion to it or if his presence there is simply to entice more people to tune in. I can't really imagine Ford being excited about much of anything if he's not playing a role — in person, the man is very measured and surprisingly soft-spoken — so I wouldn't be surprised if he just reads the teleprompter, rolls out of there, and collects his check for showing up.

Derek Hough is hosting the special, which airs from 8pm-10pm EST on ABC on February 21st, and also features appearances from Elton John and Josh Gad. Remember to set your DVRs if you want to check it out.

Clive Owen Joins Andrew Niccol's Sci-Fi Thriller ANON

Clive Owen has jumped on board an interesting sci-fi thriller called Anon being written and directed by Andrew Niccol. I'm a fan of this guy's work. He's directed films such as Gattaca, Lord of War, and most recently, Good Kill.  He's also written scripts for The Truman Show and Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal.

This sounds like a great project for Niccols to take on. According to Variety, "Owen plays a detective in the psychological thriller set in a world with no privacy, ignorance and anonymity. It’s the end of crime. However, when Owen’s character stumbles on a young woman who doesn’t exist, he discovers it may not be the end of crime but the beginning."

I'm curious to see how this turns out. It seems like a solid project that has potential for both Niccols and Owen to create something great. It seems like a film that will allow Niccols to tap into the same kind of creative mindset that he has with Gattaca.

Owen is currently shooting Luc Besson’s sci-fi fantasy film Valerian

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Costume Display Photos from Nuremberg Toy Fair

Very little about Star Wars: Rogue One has been released officially. It's all just basic info you find on an IMDb page, and I really hope that continues. But who are we kidding, this movie is going to get some crazy exposure. Because it has unknown characters (unless those rumors turn out to be true) and actors that are not established blockbuster names, odds are hight that Disney • Lucas Film will give away a lot more of the story than they did for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Nuremberg Toy Fair has a display of the costumes used on Rogue One and Twitter user DarrenArsenal1 snapped a bunch of photos and I've embedded those below. Several costume replica forums are analyzing the hell out of these photos so they can be the first to cosplay these characters.

Star Wars: Rogue One will steal the box office #1 slot December 16 (USA).

As Captain America: Civil War approaches, it's becoming more obvious that this is "Avengers 2.5" and due to its events will have huge ramifications on all the Marvel films to follow. Iron Studios took to Facebook to announce that they are making "1/10 Art Scale and 1/4 Legacy Replica statues" (translation via Coming Soon), with this announcement they attached some promo art embedded below.

I came across some concept art by Andy Park and Ryan Meinerding that we had posted previously, but I found it at an absurdly high resolution of 70 megapixels. If you click the header image it will take you to the full-sized image.

Hanna-Barbera Cartoons Being Reimagined by DC Comics

Hanna-Barbera has an impressive pedigree of cartoon character and stories that still influence many today. Turns out some of the top artists and writers over at DC Comics are huge Hanna-Barbera geeks. People like Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, co-publishers of DC, were interviewed by EW about a new line of comics they have coming out that features some of the most iconic characters in cartoon history.

scooby-doo-jim-lee.jpg

The upcoming comics include Flintstones, Future Quest, Wacky Raceland, and the "crown jewel" (as Lee is referring to it), Scooby Apocalypse. The cover art and name alone have me sold on the last one. DiDio summarizes what we can expect from each of the comics:

“You’re gonna have an epic adventure in the future stories with Johnny [sic] Quest and Space Ghost. You’re going to have a scary, dangerous world in Wacky Raceland that is just as strange and dynamic as you hope it would be. I think Scooby Doo is going to excite people and challenge people, and I think that we’re going to use Flintstones to really bring out that voice and social commentary that they might’ve brought out in the ’60s and raise it back for today.”

It sounds like this is just the beginning, as long as everything goes well with this initial lineup.

"There’s a deep, deep bench of wonderful characters in the Hanna-Barbera library we’d love to get involved in, so this is just the first step into a very steep pool."

Personally, I'm excited. Getting to see some of my favorite cartoons reimagined in fun, creative ways is something I enjoy. If I don't like it, I always have the originals to go back to. But it sounds like DC is doing this with complete respect for the original material:

"We're hopefully building a whole new generation to have that same level of love that we have for them."

See the full interview here and let us know what you think of the new updated versions of Scooby Doo and the rest of the Hanna-Barbera gang.

SING STREET Is a Clear-Eyed and Joyous Coming of Age Story — Sundance Review

$

0

I’m just going to say this up front: no one dies in Sing Street. That’s not the only reason I loved it so much, but this year at Sundance I saw Molly Shannon slowly die of cancer, a nun murder some babies, more than one person eaten by a fucking dog, and myriad other devastating tragedies (don’t even get me started on Manchester by the Sea, review coming soon), so the fact that Sing Street was ultimately joyful was a blessed relief.

Writer-director John Carney’s newest film (he also made Once and Begin Again) returns to Dublin and returns to the kind of personal storytelling we loved so much in Once. Admittedly semi-autobiographical, Sing Street is set in 1985 and focuses on Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), a young teen whose parents, in the midst of money problems and marital problems, send him to Synge Street School, a nightmare of a boys school whose motto is Viriliter Age — "act manly." It's not the place you'd expect him to thrive. When he meets Raphina (Lucy Boynton), a model who is moving to London any day now, he starts a band so that he can have her star in their music videos. He may have only gotten into it to impress a girl, but music quickly becomes his refuge as he deals with a monstrous headmaster, the rapidly devolving situation at home, and his growing feelings for Raphina. Also, he starts to get pretty good at it.

That band’s progression is maybe the funnest part of the movie. Their first original song, “The Riddle of the Model,” is crap in the best way, and the video — and the video shoot — is even worse/funnier. But they get better as the movie goes on, and the characters, especially Conor and bandmate Eamon (Mark McKenna) are actually talented. There is a fantastic running visual gag about the way Conor is absorbing all of his new musical knowledge, and the quality of the songs improves as well, building until they play a raucous show at their school’s end of term disco. The songs themselves are wonderful ‘80s throwbacks, paying homage to the great bands of the era, and I have a feeling the soundtrack is going to sell really well.

Newcomer Walsh-Peelo makes a fantastic debut here. I have a feeling he was cast for musical ability as much as acting, but he has an open, expressive face that works well for such a sensitive character. Boynton is lovely as Raphina, who could have been a cliched manic pixie dream girl type if Boynton hadn’t played such a fine balance of strength and vulnerability. She exists in part to inspire Conor, it’s true, but she has her own complicated interior life and goals and heartbreaks. Jack Reynor nearly runs away with the movie, though, as Conor’s older brother, Brendan, a college dropout who serves as his musical mentor, convincing him to write original songs, helping him write his first lyrics, and lending him albums. GeekTyrant readers will probably recognize him from Transformers: Age of Extinction, and for awhile he was rumored to be in the running for every young action role out there (including The Force Awakens), but here he is like a bearded Irish Chris Pratt, with just a tinge of tragedy. He’s funny, but he also supplies a lot of the film’s heart.

Against the backdrop of Ireland’s major recession in the ‘80s, Sing Street makes a big deal of the concept of “Happy-Sad,” although none of the characters can really explain it in words — when Conor asks about it, Brendan hands him a record by The Cure. Among the troubles the young characters have dealt with in their families are: broken homes, alcoholism, sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental illness, drug abuse, and poverty. But they’re young and alive and the world is changing all around them, and maybe they can build something new out of it. It's how you felt when you were growing out of childhood and seeing the world as it is and as it could be. The ending is so all-out joyous and hopeful that it just about knocked me out. Looking back, the path was laid out neatly for me to follow, but I genuinely didn’t expect it until it happened.

The Weinstein Company bought the U.S. rights to Sing Street during the Cannes Film Festival, so it is likely to come to a theater (or streaming service) near you. If it does, you should check it out. I know I'm already ready to watch it again.

NINE LIVES Trailer: Kevin Spacey Becomes a Cat in a Movie That Somehow Isn't a Joke

Exactly one year ago, I wrote about how Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey was going to play a character who becomes trapped in a cat's body in a live-action movie called Nine Lives from Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld. Today, we have the first trailer for the film...and it looks just as awful as that premise suggests.

This looks like direct-to-DVD nonsense, and I'm having a really hard time wrapping my brain around why Spacey, Sonnenfeld, and Christopher Walken would get involved in a movie like this. Is it possible that this movie is a masterpiece and the trailer is just really bad? I don't know, but as it is, this looks like a fake joke trailer you'd see in something like 30 Rock, Funny People, or Tropic Thunder. Please, help me make some sense of this in the comments below.

Nine Lives opens in theaters (yes, for real) on August 5th.

Mark Ruffalo Talks About Hulk's Epic Story Arc in THOR: RAGNAROK

Earlier this week, we heard a rumor that Thor: Ragnarok could possibly tie into a Planet Hulk-type storyline. That has yet to be confirmed, but if it's true, it would be awesome! During a recent interview with Yahoo, Mark Ruffalo shot down the idea of a solo Hulk film again but reveals that Hulk's epic story arc will play out through Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War parts 1 and 2. When asked if there would be a solo Hulk film, Ruffalo said:

“I’d love to do a Hulk movie, but that’s beyond my control. It’s controlled by Universal [Pictures]. Marvel doesn’t even hold the rights to it. So, it’s not on the horizon. And I don’t know if it will be. But we have worked a really interesting arc into Thor 3, Avengers 3 and 4 for Banner that I think will – when it’s all added up – will feel like a Hulk movie, a standalone movie.”

We already know that part about Universal controlling the rights isn't exactly true, but it's good to know that we'll see Hulk in action in the upcoming Avengers films. That means that Marvel knows exactly where they want Hulk and Bruce Banner to end up at the end of Phase 3. I guess that still means Planet Hulk isn't happening...as a solo film. The actor goes on to talk about his enthusiasm for Thor's new director saying:

“Taika Waititi’s coming in and I love him. That’s a surprise and it fits part of this Marvel doing the unexpected, casting the unexpected, and now bringing in the unexpected for writer and director. I’m really interested in where that’s going. They’re writing the script now. I am thinking about it, I’m doing script meetings and stuff so we’re starting to prep it.”

During this very interview, Ruffalo also talked about working with Joss Whedon for the last time in a Marvel film:

“Yeah, he basically told me it was [his last one] and I was like ‘goddamn it, you dragged me in to this world and now you’re abandoning me here.' But they’re doing fine. Joss’ll do fine. I just miss him, and I will miss him. He cracked this character, he obviously cracked the Avengers which was nearly impossible. It was a miracle and he did it so beautifully.”

Even though he's a fan of what Whedon brought to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he's still confident that the Russo brothers will be able to carry that torch:

“I think the Russo brothers are great and I think they’re well positioned to take it on, and I’m happy to be doing it with them, but I’m friends with Joss. He had a hard time making the first one and he had a hard time making this one. I think it’s partially the nature of that beast.”

Ruffalo has been amazing as the Hulk, and I'm curious to see how far Marvel plans on actually taking this character. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to open in theaters on November 3rd, 2017, with Avengers: Infinity War – Part I set to open May 4th, 2018, and Part II on May 3rd, 2019.

AS YOU ARE is a Dark Look at Growing Up in The '90s - Sundance Review

$
0
0

As You Are is a movie that perhaps wasn't the most exciting or notable film that showed at Sundance this year, but it really drew me in right from the beginning. It's set in the early '90s, with punk and grunge references and other pop culture relics scattered throughout the storyline. The film follows three friends — Jack (Owen Campbell), Mark (Charlie Heaton), and Sarah (Amandla Stenberg, who played Rue in The Hunger Games) — through a series of memories as told by Jack in what is clearly a police interrogation.

Jack and Mark first meet after their parents start dating and soon move in together to create the family that neither Jack nor Mark ever really had. After a fight with some classic, old-school bullies, they meet Sarah and the three of them become fast friends, ditching class to get high and talk about music, life, or the passing of Kurt Cobain.

Of course, this doesn't last. Mark's father is very abusive and when their parents break up, Jack and Mark do too. Mark leaves school, and with it, his two best friends. Jack and Sarah begin dating, but things seem a little off. Neither of them is the same without Mark.

This film is a darker take on the classic coming-of-age story that gets regurgitated every so often, and it does a great job of capturing the fear and uncertainty of being a teenager and trying to figure out exactly who you are. The title, As You Are, is a clear reference to the Nirvana song as well as an echo of each character's struggle to be true to themselves while still fitting in and feeling accepted.

The acting in this film was absolutely terrific. Campbell is charmingly sincere with a lanky awkwardness that feels relatable. Heaton and Stenberg are charismatic and attractive, and make their characters feel just as unsure about the world as Jack is. The plot avoids many teen drama cliches while providing a sense of familiarity at the same time. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who's a fan of angsty '90s vibes and great acting.

Batman is "In Cаhооts" with a Surprising Character Against Superman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN

In a recent interview with Empire, Henry Cavill revealed a surprising bit of information regarding Ben Affleck's Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As we get closer to the release date, we are seeing more and more little details regarding the story, but nothing that is completely ruining it.

One of the more interesting things Cavill revealed is an individual that Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman has teamed up with against Superman. There are minor SPOILERS ahead. Before I get to that information, though, the actor spoke about Superman and how he has embraced being a superhero since we last saw him.

“He’s more used to this gig, doing his best to save as many lives as he can. He is no longer frantic. He’s no longer a wet behind the ears kind of superhero.”

However, he is motivated to take down Batman. He's not on board with how the Caped Crusader is fighting crime, so at first, he takes on Batman as a journalist. We all know where that eventually leads!

“He doesn’t agree with his form of justice. For this farm boy, who tries to do things the right way, justice at any cost is not something he can come to terms with.”

By using The Daily Planet, he hopes to “show the world what this Batman dude is doing.” Didn't Superman destroy a whole city full of innocent people who were collateral damage during his battle with Zod? He must have put killing all of those people behind him. Cavill goes on to say:

"So it's about two heroes who can be seen as heroic and villainous, and when you look at the double-edged sword of that, different people will come away looking at it very differently. Rather than just Alien vs. Predator, where you have two monsters and they're gonna fight, you have two people who really truly believe they are doing something heroic and necessary in their conflict."

OK, now we'll get into some SPOILER territory. To help take down Superman, Batman teams up with Lex Luthor! The magazine reveals:

"Eisenberg's Luthor and Batman will be in cahoots against this Kryptonian godhead."

That obviously doesn't work out for anyone in the end. I'm sure Wayne's intentions are good at first, but I think it's safe to say that Lex is going to take advantage of him. As for Clark Kent, he's not too concerned with Lex at first:

"He knows who this Lex Luthor chap is, but he certainly wouldn't assume that he had any bad intentions."

We all know that Batman has bad intentions for Superman, as we've seen in the trailer; he makes it very clear that he's after him. Batman v Superman will hit theaters on March 25th, 2016.

YOGA HOSERS Is Kevin Smith's Worst and Most Embarrassing Film - Sundance Review

$

0
yoga-hosers-is-kevin-smiths-worst-and-most-embarassing-film-sundance-review

For the most part, I've enjoyed Kevin Smith's movies. I've enjoyed his style of filmmaking, the characters he's created, and the stories that he's told. Some I've liked more than others, but they all managed to entertain on some level. Hell, I even enjoyed Tusk because of how messed up and insane it was! So yeah, I was looking forward to seeing Yoga Hosers

Unfortunately, the movie was awful. Yoga Hosers is Smith's worst film, and it's barely watchable. I hate that I am writing a bad review for this film, but for some reason he went out and made this absurd movie turd. As I was watching the film, all I could think about is what would possess him to waste his talent on such a thing!? Maybe he did it for his daughter so that she could star in it?

The movie centers on two 15-year-old girls named Colleen Collette (Harley Quinn Smith) and Colleen McKenzie (Lily-Rose Melody Depp). They bury their heads in their smartphones and take yoga from an instructor played by Justin Long. They also sing in a small band they created and work at the Manitoban convenience store Eh-2-Zed. These two characters are annoying as hell, and you can say that about every other character in this film.

After enjoying the great characters that he's created in the past, it was so weird to see him backtrack and develop an ensemble of characters I couldn't stand.

I kind of get into some spoiler stuff at this point:

As they are living their lives they learn that their town was home to a Nazi splinter group during World War II. The leader of this Nazi group has been lying in wait in an underground bunker beneath the convenience store that the girls work in. This ancient evil rises to cause chaos in the world, and the two Colleens team up with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Johnny Depp). What do they have to fight you ask? An army of Nazi sausages that force themselves up people's assholes.

Look, I know it sounds like it could be a cool film concept, but it's executed in the worst possible ways. He must have made the movie bad on purpose. It's like he knew that the movie was going to get bad reviews so he interjected a part in the film where he makes it clear that he doesn't like critics. In fact, the first mission of the Nazi sausages was to kill all the critics in the world because they aren't real people.

There are couple funny moments, though. I liked the line, "Haters have to hate; douches have to douche." And there was a great little cameo by Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman in Batman: The Animated Series. That was actually my favorite part of the movie. Everything else just seemed like a complete embarrassment and a waste of talent. The character that Depp plays is the worst thing he's ever done. My least favorite part of the film involved Ralph Garman, who plays the Nazi leader. At one point he reveals his entire master plan to the girls while doing a bunch of different celebrity impressions that aren't really even that good. The whole scene played as him saying to the audience, "Hey! Look what I can do!" The whole thing just came off as annoying.

Apparently, Smith said he made the film for 13-year-old girls, so I'm obviously not the demographic. But seriously, he could have given this 13-year-old girl demographic a better film to watch. I know I wouldn't want my girls to watch it because it would probably make them dumber. I seriously wonder if he made this movie to purposely fuck with his fans and critics.

This just seemed like lazy filmmaking for a pointless film that just cracked countless bad Canadian jokes along the way. If Smith isn't sorry he made this movie, he should be. I was trying to think of a movie to compare it to, and the thought popped into my head that it was worse than Robert Rodriquez's Shark Boy and Lava Girl

As much as I disliked this movie, I'm still excited to see what he does with Mallrats 2 and Clerks 3. Who knows, maybe some of you will actually like Yoga Hosers. If you do, I'd sure like to know why.

Colin Trevorrow Wants to Shoot STAR WARS: EPISODE IX on Film and in Space

$

Director Colin Trevorrow is planning to shoot Star Wars: Episode IX on film, not digital. He spoke about this during a press conference at the Sundance Film Festival with Christopher Nolan. He says one of the reasons that he wants to shoot the movie on film is because he's treating the movie like a period piece. He explains:

"The only place where I tend to not be able to attach myself entirely to something shot digitally is when it's a period film. There's something in my brain that goes, 'Well, they didn't have video cameras then,' [Film] tends to remind us of our memories, of our childhoods, the way we used to see films...  I could never shoot Star Wars on anything but [film] because it's a period film: It happened a long time ago!"

It's no surprise that this movie would be shot on film. After all, J.J. Abrams shot The Force Awakens on film, and Rian Johnson will shoot Episode VIII on film. I think Trevorrow's reasoning is a bit different than their reasoning, though. I've never heard anyone say they want to shoot a movie on film because it's a period piece.

That's not the only thing, though! Trevorrow asked Lucasfilm and Disney if he could shoot parts of the film on location... in outer space! He says:

"I asked the question, 'Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film plates in actual space for Star Wars, and I haven't gotten an answer yet, but they've shot IMAX in space!"

If that happens, Star Wars: Episode IX could be the first major film to have scenes actually shot in space. The cost for that seems like it would be astronomical, so I seriously doubt he's going to get to the greenlight to do that. But, if he does, it would kinda be pretty cool. Do you think Disney should let him shoot part of his film in space?

Paul Rudd vs. Stephen Hawking in a game of Quantum Chess, and the cherry on top is the fact that it's narrated by Keanu Reeves! It's hilariously entertaining.

The game is real and the stakes are high as the future of humanity hangs in the balance. Can Paul Rudd, an actor, beat Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest minds of our generation, in a game of chess that will determine the future of humanity? Most likely not. Unless...

The short film was directed by Alex Winter (Bill & Ted), which explains how Reeves got involved. This video is completely awesome in every way, and it's sure to bring heavy amounts of geek happiness into your life today.

Psychiatrists Deem NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN's Anton Chigurh "Most Realistic Film Psychopath"

When we think psychos in film we think of Norman Bates, Hannibal Lector, or my personal favorite, Patrick Bateman.

While entertaining and intriguing, expert psychiatrists say these representations are not the most accurate when it comes to real life psychopaths. Tech Crunch reports a team of experts analyzed over 400 films, and out of the films selected Anton Chigurh of No Country For Old Men as the film world's most realistic psychopath.

Their reasoning?

"He seems to be effectively invulnerable and resistant to any form of emotion or humanity,"

I gotta say Javier Bardem was definitely the high point of that movie, and while I would be terrified to be around any movie psychopath, I wouldn't want to meet a guy like Anton in real life!
