The CW Casts Its Jonah Hex in LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

$

Last week, we heard that The CW was planning to include the disfigured cowboy character Jonah Hex in their new time traveling superhero series DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and the producers have already cast an actor to don the face make-up and cowboy hat. HitFix reports that actor Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!, Quantico, Quarantine) has been tapped to play the role.

From earlier reports, we knew that the character would make his first appearance in episode eleven of the first season and the writers may end up bringing him back in a recurring capacity, and both of those things are still true today.

Josh Brolin played the character in a 2010 film adaptation that famously bombed at the box office. The CW version of the character will apparently be familiar with the concept of time travel when the Legends first meet up with him, and it'll be interesting to see if fans embrace Schaech's take on the iconic gunslinger more than they did with Brolin's version. The CW describes their Hex like this:

A true legend of the Old West, a morally ambiguous gunslinger with a penchant for danger. Surprisingly, he knows a thing or two about time travel and the future, but is at home in the Wild West. He’s been battling outlaws and gangs for awhile now, and advises the team to be extra careful when they arrive in the small town of Salvation.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow airs on Thursdays at 8pm on The CW.

Drop Everything: This Nonsensical, Bizarre Trailer For BATMAN V SUPERMAN Will Melt Your Brain

This might be the most bonkers fan-made trailer I've ever seen. YouTuber Aldo Jones has taken the trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and remixed and distorted it to such a degree that it's as if you're watching a funhouse version of the movie. Absolutely nothing you'll see here makes any sense whatsoever, and it's both hilarious and a little disconcerting.

Yes, that is Danny Trejo's face on Gal Gadot's body. Yes, Batman is reading a newspaper when facing off against Doomsday. Yes, Superman's face is painted like Mickey Mouse for some reason. Why? Enter this looney bin version of Zack Snyder's universe below, and maybe your consciousness will open to a new level where you'll be able to comprehend this insanity.

Watch: X-MEN: DANGER ROOM PROTOCOLS Kicks Off With Wolverine and Jean Grey Battling Sentinels

A few weeks ago, we wrote about Joel Furtado's X-Men: Danger Room Protocols, a web series inspired by the '90s X-Men: The Animated Series. At the time, only the introduction video was available, but now Furtado has released the first part of the first episode online. It features Wolverine and Jean Grey battling Sentinels in the Danger Room as Professor X looks on, and the animation and effects are terrific. It's essentially just like diving into a slightly more pixelated version of the animated series, which I loved as a kid and a lot of people in my generation grew up watching.

Check out the intro video and the first episode below:

David Ayer Talks More About Jared Leto's Joker: "The Hairs Stand Up On The Back Of Your Neck"

As fans patiently wait for tonight's CW special about the DC Cinematic Universe and the new trailer for Suicide SquadUSA Today has a new interview with director David Ayer and naturally, talk turned to Jared Leto's portrayal of The Joker. Along with discussing the fact that Leto went full-on method in the role (which is common knowledge by this point), Ayer talked about the weight of the responsibility Leto has to create a new take on such an iconic character:

"It’s a scary character to tackle. This iteration of him, people will realize there really is a continuity of history — there is a lot of respect for what the Joker represents, who he is as a character. He is the best known villain in fiction so there’s an incredible responsibility there to also be faithful to what he is but at the same time push him into this next world, next time, next phase."

When asked if Leto ever freaked him out while they were filming, Ayer admitted:

"Big time. The hairs stand up on the back of your neck. If you're a Batman fan, you have to love/hate the Joker because he’s the best nemesis ever. Just to have him on one of my film sets, it was a very memorable thing for me."

Zack Snyder, who produced Suicide Squad but wasn't on the set (he was a little busy with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), also chimed in:

"The commitment to the role, you’re going to see that really shine through in a way that you’re not used to seeing actors in movies really go all the way with (in) every little moment and every little breath," Snyder says. "You’re going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don’t know that everyone’s ready for but I think it will be amazing."

I hope this version of The Joker is remembered more for being a great character than for all of the crazy things Jared Leto did off camera and how dedicated he was to playing the role. Months and years from now, that's not what I want to be talking about when someone brings up Suicide Squad — I'd much rather have a conversation about how diabolical the character was or how well-written he was, and while I'd love for Leto to be great and memorable in the role, I'm starting to fear that this hype machine (to which I'm admittedly contributing by writing this article) may be the most memorable aspect of the film.

spectacularly-badass-new-trailer-for-suicide-squad

Hot damn! Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for David Ayer's Suicide Squad, and it's insanely badass! This is one hell of an amazing trailer that is full of incredible action-packed new footage, and it's all perfectly set to Queen's classic song, "Bohemian Rhapsody." If you aren't exploding with excited over this movie after watching this trailer, I don't know what to tell you. You're crazy. Suicide Squad is going to be a blast to watch!

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

The movie hits theaters on August 5th, and it's gonna be an absolute blast!

First Footage from Solo WONDER WOMAN Film Revealed

We've got our first footage from DC Entertainment's solo Wonder Woman movie for you to watch thanks to DC Comics' CW special Dawn of the Justice League, which aired earlier tonight. They showed a lot more than I was expecting, and I was impressed by what they revealed! There's a lot of great stuff to see in this footage, including Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman in full on kick ass action! There's also a bit of footage of Chris Pine's character, Steve Trevor.

Wonder Woman is currently in the middle of production with Patty Jenkins at the helm. The movie also stars Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, and Connie Nielsen. It's set for release June 23, 2017.

The Spider-Man Deal Between Marvel and Sony Still Isn’t Fully Solidified

Like many of you, I assumed the reason that we haven’t seen Spider-Man in any of the marketing material for Captain America: Civil War was because they were trying to keep that aspect of the film a secret. Well, it turns out there’s a lot more to it than that.

During a Q&A with Collider, directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that all of the deals involving Spider-Man between Marvel and Sony Pictures still aren’t fully completed. I thought everything was squared away! Apparently that’s not the case, though. The directors explain:

“Part of the reason of what was so secretive was that the deals were always lagging slightly behind how we were using the character. We were always in danger of upsetting the deal—there were still sensitive issues going on between the two studios that they needed to agree on. When we were casting Tom Holland, when we were screen-testing him for the movie there was a whole very involved kind of process that was under the radar and secretive, because of the fact that it was still a sensitive business issue.
“The reason why I preface that is we’re still kind of in 'deal zone.' The reason why we still won’t talk about [the costume] is that Marvel and Sony still have to work out what uses they have for the character, on a promotional level, on a commercial level. There’s still complications as far as that goes that involves business deals.”

Sounds like an absolute nightmare for the people involved. We’ve only got a few months before Civil War is set to be released in theaters. Marvel and Sony better get everything figured out soon so they can start slapping Spider-Man on lunchboxes, t-shirts, and toys! I guess everyone wants to make sure they benefit and get what they want out of this deal. There must be a lot of red tape to slash through and compromises going to get the deal done.

In the end, the fans will win because we’ll get to see Spider-Man included in the MCU, which is what we’ve all been wanting to see for years.

Custom Made Life-Size LEGO BB-8

The creative folks over at Bright Bricks have made a life-size model of BB-8 out of LEGOs! Those are two of my favorite things! This video shows a time-lapse of the building process and gives some insight on how they achieved BB-8's curvy figure despite Legos being considerably…blocky. You can also tell from the video that it took a whole team several days to complete this. I can only imagine how complicated it must have been to make.

Juan Antonio Bayona Might be in the Running to Direct JURASSIC WORLD 2

Universal Pictures is moving forward with Jurassic World 2, and since Collin Trevorrow will be busy directing Star Wars: Episode IX, the studio has to find a new director.

According to Deadline, that director could be Juan Antonio Bayona. This is the director who brought us films such as The Orphanage and The Impossible. He was most recently attached to direct World War Z 2, but ended up dropping due to scheduling.

No deal is done yet, and there’s a good chance that several other directors are up for the job. Trevorrow did write the script for the sequel with Derek Connolly, and since that the script is in a place they want it to be, the studio is on the hunt for someone to develop it.

This would be the biggest film to date for Bayona if he does get the gig, but the films he’s made so far have been solid. You won’t hear me complain if this actually turns into something. I’d be curious to see him take on this project.

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are expected to return and reprise their roles, and the sequel is set to be released on June 22nd, 2018.

Will DEADPOOL Open the Door to R-Rated Superhero Films?

$

R-rated superhero films are a rare thing to see these days. In the past, films like Blade, Watchmen, and Kick-Ass have made it onto the big screen with an "R" rating, and now there’s Deadpool. With the surge of superhero films that we’ve seen in the past few years, if Deadpool is a success at the box office, it could show studios that there’s a market for these kinds of movies, and maybe it will open the door for more rated “R” superhero movies.

At one of the surprise screenings for the film that happened recently, Ryan Reynolds showed up to talk about the movie and what he hopes comes from it. ComicBook.com was in attendance at one of these screenings and reports that Reynolds said that he hopes it will pave the way for more R-rated superhero films:

"I think it has to [open the door for more R-rated superhero movies], I hope so. There are a lot of superhero movies out there on the market. It’s a genre unto itself. I personally would like to see more rated R ones. I just think it’s time. We’ll see if this holds. Hollywood shamefully copycats every movie that works – so if this does work, you’ll probably see more rated R films!"

Since Marvel is owned by Disney, I know we’ll never see an R-rated version of Iron Man or Captain America. That’s ok, though, because they have their hardcore Netflix series that fans can enjoy. As for what kinds of films we could see happen, Reynolds says that he’d like to see an R-rated X-Force adaptation:

"I don’t think you’re going to see a rated R Avengers movie, but there’s room for other ones. I think there’s room for a rated R X-Force movie!"

That would be awesome to see, and it would be great if it actually happens! But, first things first, Deadpool has to be a success. If it’s not, then we can kiss our hope of seeing an influx of R-rated superhero films goodbye.

The reactions from these special event Deadpool screenings have been glowing, so we know the movie is going to be great! Now people just need to go out and see it when it’s released on February 12th.

Jennifer Lawrence to Play Fidel Castro's Lover in MARITA

Jennifer Lawrence has lined up a new movie project titled Marita in which she is set to portray Fidel Castro’s lover, Marita Lorenz.

After David O Russell’s Joy, Sony Pictures' biographical spy drama is the second production where the Golden Globe winner plays a real-life personality. It will have Matt Tolmach and Andre Rouleau as producers and will be scripted by Eric Warren Singer who, as you may remember, was co-writer of American Hustle.

Marita will go back to 1959 to trace the life of Lorenz. The movie will depict how she started an affair with one of the most famous revolutionaries in the world, the Cuban leader Fidel Castro, and how she became his assassin later on.

Warner Bros. sure did deliver some awesomeness last night during their DC Entertainment film special. We got a badass new trailer for Suicide Squad, some impressive new footage from Wonder Woman, and now we have three featurettes that focus on characters from Justice League — Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg. The videos include concept art and interviews with the actors who play these superheroes: Jason Mamoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher. In the interviews, they share their thoughts on these characters, and what we can expect to see from them on the big screen.

Movie Theater Combatting Noisy Eating with Crunch Free Foods

It's insane how theaters have evolved in just the past ten years. I remember being pumped when my hometown got stadium seating and a faux IMAX theater! Now we have full bar service just outside, buttons to summon waiters and the ability to order a three course meal as we watch a movie! While some of us enjoy reclining and eating a steak while watching The Hateful Eight, there's a growing community who say the crunching, knife-cutting, and chewing has just gotten too noisy!

Personally, I think if you are able to hear someone chewing a sandwich over Dolby HD 7.98384 Surround Sound you probably went in there looking for a fight, but it's your prerogative to enjoy a film you paid for.  In an attempt to please both the foodies and the librarians, the Williamsburg Dine In Cinema in Brooklyn announced it will be serving "crunch free" foods to those who go to their theater.

You'll be able to get peanut butter and banana sandwiches, pork fried tator tots, and quite possibly the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of, popcorn flavored oysters. On the note of limited distractions, smelling some rank sea food might trump the noise I'm gonna hear of a fork hitting a plate.

Regardless of these changes, if you really want to see a film with limited interruptions, you should probably just go to a regular theater. It's nice to see some of these new venues making the effort, though.

Imagine yourself at your local park LARPing. You're dropping fools like there's no tomorrow. You're a destructive force of nature. You. Are. The. Man. In the midst of your rampage, you spot a balding man with a glass eye in a track suit smoking a cigarette. He approaches you after the carnage and says, "Pretty good, American...but can you hang with Ruski?"

Next thing you know, you're on a plane on your way to the M-1 MMA Medieval fighting circuit. Here men compete for glory with full armor, swords, and metal gloves. It sounds crazy, but Americans such as Mike Ivey are competing in it right now!

Three three-minute rounds with points based on knockdowns, hits, and blocks. Of course, you can't straight up execute a dude in the ring, but it can get pretty brutal in moments! The league is rolling up on its one year anniversary, and in 2016 they plan on coming stateside for some events! Keep up with them by liking their page on Facebook!

The Green Lantern Corps Will Appear in the Justice League Films

We've been teased with the prospect of a Green Lantern Corps movie since last year's Comic-Con, and as of last night, it has been confirmed. ComicBook reports that Warner Bros. will for sure be moving forward with a Green Lantern Corps movie, and also revealed that one of the Green Lanterns will join the Justice League. In his official statement, Geoff Johns told Kevin Smith during last night's CW Justice League special...

"We've been to ancient Greek mythology, we've been to the past and future with the Flash, we've been to the digital world with Cyborg.  We still got to go to space. So the Green Lanterns and the Green Lantern Corps are coming to join the Justice League universe."

As of now it's unspoken, but it is all but certain that Ryan Reynolds will not be returning to his role as Hal Jordan. Whether we will be seeing a new Hal, or perhaps John Stewart in the role remains to be seen! Personally, I'm just glad we are going to see Green Lantern done right!

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe played such a huge role in shaping my childhood. I wouldn’t be the geeky guy I am today without He-Man in my life! Those of you who are also fans of the classic cartoon series will be happy to hear that there’s a documentary being made called POWER OF GRAYSKULL: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

The doc is being made by Definitive Films, who is the same team that brought us the other geeky docs Turtle Power and Nintendo Quest. They say that this will be the definitive He-Man documentary, and they’ve already got a ton of talent set to participate. They just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to complete this project.

The doc will be focusing on toys, comics, cartoons, and movies from all eras and it will include interviews with the artists, creators, executives, and actors who helped bring He-Man to life for us. I’ve included a little teaser to give you an idea of what they guys are up to.

The doc will be about 90 to 100 minutes in length, and they are hoping to have it completed by 2017. For more information on the project, and if you want to help it along, click here. I’m curious to see what this doc will entail. I’m sure it will be packed full of all kinds of fun behind-the-scenes stories and interesting trivia.
