Behold The Awesomeness of Secret Cinema's EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Screening Event

$

Secret Cinema seriously puts on the greatest movie screening events ever! We previously showed you what their Back to the Future event was like, and after that, we got word that they were organizing one for Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back in London.

These geek events are organized by a team of people who essentially recreate the movie for you to experience. It's a completely interactive experience. Viewers come dressed up as their favorite characters, and there's even role playing involved.

The whole thing is a big secret and they tell people who want go to look for clues. For example, for this one, registrants were told to "look out for a secret code on forgotten buildings." The invite itself read:

Earth is the system. We are seeking rebels from around the world to join the Rebel Alliance and head to a Secret City where they will be taken on a journey through the world of Star Wars.

Now thanks to Future Shorts, you can see how awesome the screening event for this classic film turned out. I would love to go to one of these one day! It looks like it would be an absolute blast!

Mark Ruffalo Reveals Cate Blanchett is Playing a Villain in THOR: RAGNAROK

About a month ago, we heard that Cate Blanchett was in talks to join the cast of Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, which would certainly get my attention and make me more interested in the movie than I would be otherwise (the Thor films are my least favorite in the MCU). Her role is still a mystery, but at the time, Joey hoped that Blanchett may be playing Hela, the Goddess of Death, and there's even been some fan art that imagines what she might look like in that part.

Now The Playlist has pointed us to an ET interview with Mark Ruffalo, who is reprising his role(s) of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the new movie, and he dropped a big hint about her involvement:

"I saw her at the Governors' banquet here and heard that maybe she was circling, they were talking to her about the part, so I ran up to her and I was like, 'Please, please, please make this work!' She's just one of the best, and to have her play a baddie is going to be really exciting."

Now that doesn't necessarily mean she'll be playing Hela, but it's a distinct possibility. And considering that there have been early rumors that this film will contain Marvel's first cinematic female villain, there's also a chance Blanchett could be suiting up as the MCU's Enchantress (not to be confused with Cara Delevigne's incarnation in Suicide Squad and the DC movie universe). Either way, it'll be cool to see her face off against Thor in some capacity, and I'm hoping her deal goes through so we can add that to a new director and a dark story on the list of things that might make this Thor film better than the previous entries.

Amber Heard in Talks To Join JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN

Warner Bros. and director James Wan are currently in the process of developing the solo Aquaman movie starring Jason Momoa. It looks like they may have found their female lead in Amber Heard. If cast, not only will she be in Aquaman, but she will also have a role in Zack Snyder's Justice League movie as well.

If the casting goes through, she will be taking on the role of Mera, an undersea queen who ends up marrying Aquaman in the comics. I'm not a big fan of Heard. She's never really impressed me as an actress. For those of you not familiar with who Mera is, here's a description from DC Comics:

She rules the seas alongside Aquaman, one of the most well-known heroes in the world, and stands as one of the most powerful women in the DC Universe. Her name is Mera and you don't want to get on this quick-tempered beauty's bad side because she won't hesitate to kick your butt across all seven seas.
A princess of the underwater kingdom of Xebel who possesses enhanced strength, durability and the ability to bend water to her will, Mera trained since birth for her ultimate mission: to kill the current King of Atlantis in retaliation for her people's exile. Mera knew that to do this, she’d have to gain Aquaman’s trust. It was the only way she could get close enough to kill him. But as she got to know Aquaman, something unexpected occurred—she fell in love. And thus began the fiery redhead's constantly conflicted sense of being. To stand beside her husband is to betray her family and her people, but to give them what they want, to fulfill her mission, is something her heart would never allow her to do.
Although a hero in her own right, Mera often finds herself struggling between two worlds—whether it’s between her own people and her husband or between those of the surface and those of the sea. Her aggressive nature especially puts her at odds with the surface world, a world so much bigger and more complex than she was ever taught and with whom she finds it impossible to relate to and understand. It’s for her love of Aquaman that she even attempts to understand this world of man, and why she continues to try to be a part of both worlds while terrified of belonging to none.

Heard would join an ensemble cast that also includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Ezra Miller, who are all are expected to appear in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before teaming up in Justice League.

Do you think Heard has what it takes to take on the role of Mera in the DC Extended Universe?

A few years ago, we wrote about a cool piece of art from Scott Park that focused on 66 famous synthetic characters (robots, droids, cyborgs, etc.) from popular movies and TV shows. Sploid has now turned that art print into a video, and it's cool to see his artwork come to life and get a sense of motion like this. Check it out below:

PENNY DREADFUL Season 3 Promo Spot and Premiere Date Announced

Penny Dreadful has been such a great horror series to watch. I loved the first two seasons and it's looking like season 3 is going to be just as awesome. Showtime debuted the first promo spot for season 3. It provides an eerie look at what is in store for the fans, and I've gotta say, the very end of it is awesomely terrifying. The spot definitely got me excited for the upcoming season!

The cable network also announced that the new episodes will premiere on May 1st, 2016. If you haven't watched this series yet, it's time you jump on board and take a ride with it. Here's the synopsis:

Season Three includes a wealth of new and returning stars for the series. Tony Award winner LuPone (“American Horror Story”), who guest starred last season as the Cut-Wife, returns as a series regular in the new role of Dr. Seward, an American therapist who treats Vanessa with an unconventional new approach. Wes Studi (“Hell On Wheels,” A Million Ways to Die in the West) is a new series regular starring as Kaetenay, an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan (Josh Hartnett) who also becomes an ally to Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton). Guest stars Sarah Greene (Hecate) and Simon Russell Beale (Ferdinand Lyle) return, along with new guest stars Shazad Latif (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) as Dr. Henry Jekyll; Screen Actors Guild Award nominee Christian Camargo (“Dexter”, The Hurt Locker) as zoologist Dr. Alexander Sweet; Sam Barnett (2012, Jupiter Ascending) as Dr. Seward’s mysterious young secretary; Jessica Barden (“Far from the Madding Crowd”) as Justine, a young acolyte to Lily (Billie Piper) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney); and Perdita Weeks (“The Tudors”), as Catriona Hartdegan, a scholar with expert knowledge of the supernatural. Rory Kinnear (as The Creature) and Harry Treadaway (as Dr. Frankenstein) also star.

Penny Dreadful was created, written and executive produced by John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) along with Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes.

DEADPOOL Continues Its Ridiculous Marketing Campaign With This Emoji Billboard

We're less than a month away from Deadpool hitting theaters, and I still find it hard to believe that this movie has actually been made by a major Hollywood studio. Longtime followers of sites like this will remember that it took years for this to happen, and I just assumed fans would have to be content with fan films for the rest of their lives, because, honestly, what studio would have the balls to make a Deadpool movie and actually give it the R-rating that it needs to do justice to the character? Against all odds, 20th Century Fox stepped up and made it happen, and barring some sort of insane scenario reminiscent of The Interview, we're actually going to see it in theaters nationwide.

So far, the marketing campaign has been nailing it and making its target demographic very happy, but it remains to be seen how the movie will do outside of the core audience that are already 100% convinced to see it. I have to say, this emoji-filled billboard — photographed in Los Angeles by Patton Oswalt — probably isn't going to convert anyone unfamiliar with the character, but it definitely has the sense of humor that fans love.

Deadpool hits theaters on February 12th. For more ridiculous aspects of its marketing, click here.

CBS Planning To Pull CW Shows Off Of Netflix

$

Here's some news that will suck for a lot of us. Business Insider is saying that CBS is planning to pull its CW shows off of Netflix when their contract is up in order to launch their own streaming service. This move is in coordination with the earlier announcement this year that CBS would be airing a new Star Trek series exclusively through online streaming, and is supposedly the beginning of networks transitioning to standalone streaming services.

The contract is set to end sometime this year, which means the network plans to pull Arrow, Flash, and iZombie, just to name a few. The overall plan for CBS is to create a standalone CW app for 2 dollars for people to get their fix for on demand CW. The plan seems great for cord cutters, but for those of us who even have the most basic of cable...it's essentially not necessary.

While I'm not absolutely devastated CW is pulling shows from Netflix, I think it may ultimately hurt the CW more than help it. I can't tell you the number of fringe geek friends I've had get into those shows just because they got bored one afternoon while streaming! Does this affect your Netflix experience?

HEROES REBORN Probably Won't Live For a Second Season

Heroes Reborn, NBC's resurrection of its once-popular Heroes TV series, left such a small pop culture imprint that many people seem to have forgotten it was still airing new episodes. Apparently the show has performed decently when you factor in DVR watchers, but it certainly wasn't a ratings juggernaut that came anywhere close to generating the amount of discussion that its famed first season did.

Looks like this season will be the last for the resurrected show, since NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt spoke at the Television Critics Association press tour and basically said it's done unless creator Tim Kring comes up with something more:

“Yeah, I think that was always the plan unless (creator) Tim (Kring) woke up one day and said I have another chapter to tell,” Greenblatt said. “I think we’re coming to the end of the world though. Stay tuned.”

I know Mick enjoyed Reborn in his review, but it seems like there just isn't enough interest out there to drive another season. Since I never tuned in in the first place, this doesn't affect my viewing habits at all, but are you disappointed that the show probably won't come back, or do you think it deserves another season to continue the story?

Jeph Loeb Talks About Punisher and Elektra in DAREDEVIL Season 2

Season two of Daredevil is coming on March 18th, and after the solid critical reception to the first season (and to Jessica Jones), expectations for the series are at an all-time high. Another reason for those raised expectations? The new additions to the cast, including Jon Bernthal playing Frank Castle (aka The Punisher) and Elodie Yung playing Elektra.

Marvel TV Executive Vice President Jeph Loeb spoke about those two new characters in an interview with ComicBook.com:

"If you love season one, you're going to love season two...Jon Bernthal has succeeded in his quest [to not screw up the character]. His Punisher is extraordinarily memorable, in every way.
You will fall in love with Elodie Yung as Elektra, and she will break your heart, because that's what Elektra does to people...When you float Charlie Cox (as Matt Murdock/Daredevil) into that group, and Deborah Ann Woll and Elvin Henson as Karen and Foggy, it just is an extraordinary cast. I just think people are going to be incredibly delighted by the story that Doug [Petrie] and Marco [Ramirez] and the writing staff came up with for this season."

Loeb also talked about how much those new characters will alter the fabric of the show moving forward:

"What's fantastic about the story is, is that it's created this enormous division in [Matt Murdock's] life, because the woman that he once loved has returned, and she certainly has some issues with morality, and how you get the job done, and going on the other end of the spectrum is Frank Castle, who believes that justice needs to be served in a particular way. For Matt, who believes in the law, the question of whether or not he is a vigilante, and whether or not that makes him the same as these people, is something that will drive the story, and will drive Matt. And in his performance, Charlie Cox will really raise some hard questions: when you decide to put on a mask and go out and seek justice, and you are not somebody who the law sees as someone who should be doing that job, how do you get away with that?"

There's more to read in that interview, so check out the whole thing if you have a minute. Daredevil season 2 hits Netflix in a little over two months, on March 18th.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Shows You How To Smile Like The Terminator

We see our favorite actors doing their thing on screen all the time, but rarely do we get a glimpse into really how much goes into acting. Sure, you have Method actors who drop 114 pounds for a role or live in a log cabin and skin cats, but sometimes great acting is achieved just by understanding your subject. Arnold Schwarzenegger gives us a peek into the methodology of making the Terminator by talking about a now infamously ridiculous Terminator Genysis scene.

It was goofy as hell in the movie, but I appreciate it so much more when I hear Arnold's reasoning behind it.

Space Time has quickly become my new favorite science-based YouTube channel! While it isn't completely layman's terms, it is far from being above the head of the average person, and gives me the answer to physics questions I never asked or thought I would learn on my own in school. You ever have one of those days where things fly by? Or maybe it drags on too long? This video really breaks down the relativity of time in a way you can make sense of, and will definitely make you feel more educated than you did 10 minutes ago.

Give it a watch, and subscribe to the channel if you like it! Also, the host name drops another video here and I went ahead and posted that one for you to check out as well to save you some time.

Universal Almost Trashed THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN For a Hilarious Reason

$

Just to make you feel old real quick...The 40-Year-Old Virgin came out just a little over 10 years ago, and really changed the comedy landscape when it did. It was the directorial debut of Judd Apatow and would ultimately spur a string of comedies that launched many careers and solidified a specific genre of "real comedy." With all that said, Steve Carell says it may not have ever happened if Universal had their say.

This may not surprise you if you've seen Foxcatcher, but Universal saw test footage of the film and thought Carell made a much better serial killer than a funny man! Hear the hilarious story he tells on Conan below.

FURIOUS 8 Director Says It Will Be a Fresh Take on the Franchise

I thought the last Fast and Furious film would have made a solid ending to the franchise, but Universal Pictures wants to keep raking in the cash from it, so we are getting an eighth installment. Of course, people like me will keep watching them if they keeping making them. These films have been a lot of fun to watch.

There have been rumors that the plot of Furious 8 would take place in New York City, and we’ve also heard that the filmmakers are also looking to shoot in Cuba. I’m really hoping that this next film isn’t just going to be a carbon copy of what we’ve already seen, and according to director F. Gary Gray, that’s not going to be the case.

In an interview with Collider, the director talked about teaming up with Vin Diesel again. The two previously worked on the film A Man Apart. Gray talked about his first initial meeting with the actor:

“[The meeting] was great. I went to [Vin’s] home and it was a reunion, cause I had already directed a movie with him earlier in my career, 15 years ago or so. We were both really excited to get back together and do it again. We talked about all of the Fast movies up to this point, and where could we go. I think he was really happy with the vision I have for the franchise and I was really happy about where he sees not only his character going but the franchise itself, because he’s a producer as well. So it was all love. Definitely all love.”

Explaing what we can expect to see from the film, he spoke about how J.J. Abrams influenced him:

“It’s a combination of both. When you look at someone like J.J. Abrams who gives you the spectacle and great action set pieces but also gives you character and plotting and narrative, I think it’s my job—and my intention—to do both. You amp up everything, you work on the performances, you work on the story, you work on the action; it’s just not one thing. Hopefully I bring more to it, that’s part of the point is to bring something different to the franchise while still satisfying what the fans want.”

Finally, he went on to say that this next installment of the franchise is going to be a fresh take on it, and that it won’t be “more of the same.”

“I’m probably not at liberty to go too far into detail. All I have to say is I’m extremely excited about the direction we’re going in, and we’re really pushing to make sure the audience feels like it’s not more of the same. They feel like it’s fresh, they feel like the characters they’ve come to know and love are there, but this is gonna be different, and that’s probably the most I can give you right now.”

Hopefully, he ends up giving fans something that will blow them away. Furious 8 is set for release April 14th, 2017.

Incredible Must Watch VFX Reel for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Star Wars changed the way movies would be made forever, especially in terms of how special effects are done. Lucasfilm continues that tradition of delivering the best visual effects possible for their films. They proved that with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. J.J. Abrams and the VFX team were able to perfectly blend practical effects with CGI effects creating a film worthy of the Lucasfilm/ILM legacy.

Thanks to achilles on vimeo, I have a crazy cool VFX reel for the film that shows us the before and after effects shots of some memorable scenes from the film. It’s always cool to see how all the different elements of making a film come together to create complete awesomeness!

We’ve got two clips for you to watch from Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming animated film Batman: Bad Blood. The first clip is called “Dates,” and it’s an action sequence that features Nightwing fighting the villain Blockbuster. The second clip is called “Gone,” and it shows us a conversation Nightwing and Alfred have about Batman’s disappearance.

When Batman goes missing, it will take the entire Bat “family” – including new additions Batwoman and Batwing – to keep the peace in Gotham City and unravel the mystery behind the Dark Knight’s disappearance in Batman: Bad Blood.

This movie was inspired by a few different Batman stories including Batman: R.I.P., Batman & Robin, and Batman Inc. It's also a follow-up to the previous animated films Son of Batman and Batman vs. Robin. If you liked those two movies, then you're sure to enjoy this one.

The voice cast features Yvonne Strahovski as Katherine Kane/Batwoman, Gaius Charles as Luke Fox/Batwing, Jason O'Mara as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Stuart Allan as Damian Wayne/Robin, Sean Maher as Dick Grayson/Nightwing, Morena Baccarin as Talia al Ghul, and Ernie Hudson as Lucius Fox.

The movie will be released on February 2nd, 2016 on Blu-Ray Deluxe Edition, Blu-Ray™ Combo Pack and DVD. It will also be available in Digital HD on January 19th, 2016.

Ahmed Best Says He Will Never Be Jar Jar Binks Again

I remember when I found out it wasn't cool to like Jar Jar Binks. My parents bought me a shirt with his face on it for Christmas, and I was so pumped. The Phantom Menace had just come out, and 11-year-old me thought that guy was the epitome of comedy. It wasn't until months later that I wore the shirt to a Dragon Ball Z Trading Card Game tournament and was maliciously ripped apart by some 16-year-old for wearing it that I became aware...Jar Jar Binks sucked.

I know, you know, hell, even the actor knows. Ahmed Best, who is the motion and voice behind Jar Jar gave an interview to Jamie Strangroom, who is on a quest to interview all forgotten Star Wars stars. Among other things, Ahmed talks landing the role, the shame of being Jar Jar, and how he will never....never play the role again. When talking about playing the character he says:

"Even though you play characters, you put a lot of your own personality into it, and you get emotionally and personally invested in the work that you do. It’s your work and you take pride in your work, like anything. So when your work is criticized negatively, you feel a little bit of a hit."

Actually pretty awesome to watch! I look forward to seeing this series continue!
