Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe better prepare themselves for some major losses to the Avengers roster in the coming years. By the time the two-part Avengers: Infinity War finally comes around, the contracts for many of the Marvel Studios mainstays will be at or near their end, and though the exact length of Kevin Feige's tenure as president is still unknown (there are all sorts of rumors that he'd love to jump over to the Star Wars side of Disney), one thing is for sure: Disney and Marvel are going to continue to make movies long after Infinity War, because there will be audiences who are still hungry for these stories.
At the Wizard World New Orleans comic convention, Joe Russo — one of the directors of Captain America: Civil War and both Infinity War movies — hinted to fans (via ComicBook) that they should expect big changes moving forward:
"Everything is finite, right? Nothing can last forever. It's cyclical. Some New Avengers in phase 4 are going to become prominent and then maybe some Avengers might not be around anymore. So, we'll see how all this plays out but you have to treat every character with respect. I think it's interesting that if you've seen four or five movies with the lead character having an arc, I want to see some story telling from some of the secondary characters. We're focusing on that right now with Infinity War while we're breaking into those movies, is which characters can we pull to the forefront who potentially haven't had their own 'A' story arc to this point. I think you'll see that the supporting Avengers are going to become primary Avengers."
That sounds an awful lot like some of the characters we know and love are going to die. Frankly, I hope it happens sooner rather than later: I really like the cast that's in place now, but I hope we see two or three major character deaths in Civil War because trying to sustain that level of storytelling across multiple movies with an ever-growing roster of characters seems borderline impossible. I'll welcome the death of a few of these players if it means the surviving characters have more room to breathe in these movies. And who knows — if the Russo Brothers' recent comments are any indication, we just might start to see that happen in Civil War as we barrel toward the Avengers' inevitable clash with Thanos.
