I’ve got sweet-ass animated intro here for you to watch for an upcoming fan-made web series called X-Men: Danger Room Protocols. It was created by Joel Furtado, and as you’ll see, it has a fun pixelated style to the animation, and it was inspired by the classic 90s cartoon.

X-men: Danger Room Protocols is an all new animated web series featuring your favorite characters from the ‘90s comics and cartoons. All new episodes airing every two weeks!

They have yet to release the first episode, but this intro does a great job of building the excitement! Furtado is looking to start airing the series on his YouTube channel on January 19th.

ROGUE ONE Trailer Rumored to Be Attached to CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story set to be released later this year, we can expect to see a trailer in the not too distant future. The film was recently named the most anticipated movie of 2016 as a result of a poll conducted by Fandango, which is really no surprise because it's another Star Wars movie!

So when exactly will we get to see the first trailer for the movie? According to Making Star Wars, the first trailer will be attached to Captain America: Civil War. It makes complete sense if that is the case. After all, they are both Disney properties.

I image that the trailer will be released online about a week before we get to see it in theaters, which is what they did with the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens before it debuted in theaters.

Rogue One is the first of several standalone Star Wars films to be released outside of the “saga” movies. It will tell the story of an elite unit of the Rebel Alliance that embarks on a mission to steal the plans to the Empire's new mega-weapon, the Death Star. It takes place shortly before A New Hope, and shortly after the events of the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards, and is scheduled to be released on December 16th, 2016. To catch up on any of the previous news we’ve posted about this movie, click here and here. There have been some interesting rumors regarding it, which include Peter Cushing’s character from A New Hope being digitally recreated and the possible inclusion of Darth Vader.

I can’t wait to get our first good look at this movie!

Gotham producer Danny Cannon has given fans their first look at Paul Reubens as Penguin's dad. He’s posing in the photo with Robin Lord Taylor. As many of you already know, this isn’t the first time Reubens has played daddy Cobblepot. Back in 1992, he played the character in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, which you can see a photo of below. It’s awesome that they were able to get him back on board! It’s going to be so cool to see these two actors work with each other. It’s a perfect match-up!

There’s no word on when we’ll see Reubens pop into Penguin’s life on Gotham, but the series will return to Fox for the rest of Season 2 on Monday, February 29th.

Honest Trailer for Ridley Scott's THE MARTIAN

The Martian was one of the best films that Ridley Scott has made in years. I thought it was great, and so did a lot of other people! The movie has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that didn't stop Screen Junkies from making fun of it in their latest episode of Honest Trailers!

It’s kind of like every other movie Matt Damon has done, but with a little more space and a lot more math.

Sylvester Stallone Says He's Done Playing RAMBO

We know that at one point Sylvester Stallone was looking at possibly making another Rambo film, but that didn't happen. Instead, there's a TV series being developed at Fox that Stallone will not be a part of. In fact, it doesn't look like we'll ever see Stallone in the role of John Rambo ever again.

The actor has made four Rambo films in his career, and in a recent interview with Variety, the 69-year-old actor admits that he's done.

“The heart’s willing, but the body says, ‘Stay home!' It’s like fighters that go back for one last round and get clobbered. Leave it to someone else.”

It's kind of sad to think that we'll never see Stallone back in this iconic role, but it makes sense that he would retire from it. He's pretty damn old! The actor added:

“As an action film, I was very satisfied that [Rambo IV] dealt with the Burmese situation. It had one foot in a current event, the longest civil war in history, 65 years at that time. It was so brutal, which civil war is, I was shocked they even gave me an R-rating. I didn’t want to compromise. I said, ‘This is probably going to be the last decent film of this genre that I’m going to do as a solo act.’ When that was accomplished, I never felt the same willingness to do it again.”

He added:

“There’s nothing left. When they asked me to do another Rambo’ I said, ‘If I can’t do better than I did last time, and I can’t, then why’?”

As for what Stallone thinks about the upcoming new series in development, he said:

“I don’t want to cast aspersions, but it’s delicate to try to replace a character with his son. I’ve seen the son of Flicka, the son of Tarzan, the son of King Kong, the son of Godzilla. It’s a very difficult premise.”

I personally don't think the series should be made without Stallone's involvement. This is his baby. If he's not willing to be a part of it, they might as well just let it go. Stallone had a great run with this franchise, but he can't play this character forever!

Creepy-Ass Test Footage of an Animatronic Head for THE WORLD'S END

Some amazing test footage has been released by animatronics artist Matt Denton featuring an insanely creepy animatronic head that was used in Edgar Wright‘s 2103 film The World’s End. The head features crazy realistic eye and jaw movement with wonderfully detailed skin. The final product is convincing as hell and is enough to give me nightmares. You can't get these kind of results using CG!

This is test footage and images of the animatronic head built for Edgar Wrights “The World’s End”. This is a fairly simple head with only eye and jaw movement but has just enough functionality to sell the gag! Used during the fight sequence in the toilets.

CES 2016: App Based Bartenders and a Drunk Future

You're at a bar. Scores of people are on either side of you and the bartender has flat out ignored you for the past ten minutes. Finally your time comes, you give your order and...he doesn't know how to make it. Also he only takes cash, so as you scramble for your wallet they're gone and serving others for another ten minutes.

That was the past.

CES 2016 is showing us the future of drinking, and the future is incredibly bright. From Keurig-style home brews, to app-driven bartenders who make your drinks EXACTLY the way you want them. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of these ideas out on the market, especially the drink maker...I could see that one really blowing up at bars.

Man up you "gazorp gorps" and get ready to "get schwifty" with about the best game announcement Adult Swim has ever made. No surprise that it involves Rick and Morty, but many were surprised when the game Pocket Mortys looks very much intentionally like a Pokemon clone! All we know is everything mentioned in the tweet below...

It's a super sweet deal for iOS users, as it's practically impossible to play anything remotely like Pokemon on your iPhone, and who doesn't love Rick and Morty? Adult Swim has really made giant leaps in their quality of games as of late, so I'm for sure getting this one when it drops next Thursday. Do you think it'll be worth the wait?

Margot Robbie Says Harley Quinn is "Creepy, Violent, and Crazy" in SUICIDE SQUAD

There's a lot to be excited about for David Ayer's Suicide Squad. The movie looks like it's going to be pretty damn incredible. I'm especially excited to see Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn! It seems like she was the perfect actress to bring this character to life on the big screen for the first time.

The actress recently did an interview with Cineplex, and she talked about the role a bit and working with Will Smith, who plays Deadshot in the movie. She began by saying:

"Harley is creepy, violent, crazy — all of the things that I aspire to be! No. It’s the fun of living vicariously through someone who is doing things that I would never do in real life".

Harley Quinn has been teased in the trailer, but I know that there's so much more to her that we haven't seen yet, and I can't wait to see it! In 2015, Robbie starred alongside Smith the movie Focus, which I actually really enjoyed. Robbie was very excited to learn that she'd be working with him again.

“I enjoyed working with Will so, so much that I was overjoyed when I heard that we would be working together again. I actually texted him when I heard he was in negotiations to be in Suicide Squad and kept peer-pressuring him, ‘You’d better be taking this movie!’ He obviously signed on for his own reasons, but I was so incredibly happy that we got to do Round Two. He’s awesome on set and awesome off set. He’s just a really, really good person.”

These two actors had amazing chemistry together in Focus, and there's no doubt that will carry over into Suicide Squad. A new trailer is supposed to arrive soon, and I'm sure will get to see even more of Harley Quinn in it.

Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5th, 2016.

Hasbro Apologizes, Promises to Add Rey to STAR WARS Monopoly

hasbro-apologizes-and-will-add-rey-in-star-wars-monopoly-social.jpg

We reported yesterday that Hasbro toys had decided to leave Rey out of its version of Star Wars Monopoly, and there was a huge outcry amongst fans when they found out. Since then, Hasbro has made excuses citing they didn't wish to "spoil" the film for those who had not seen it, which frankly is a lame ass excuse. I mean...I guess they added ROTJ-era Luke Skywalker because they were so concerned about spoilers and not to save money, right? After a continued round of what is best described as "corporate bullshit and ass covering," Hasbro finally apologized and said they would add Rey to their future copies of the game.

I really don't have any clue as to why Rey wasn't in the game, but I think any claims of sexism and all that are beyond the point. When you have a demand for a character and people asking you to include that character...JUST DO IT. Don't make excuses or try to divert to other products...just make it better! The fans are never wrong!

Just my two cents.

Watch This Recut '70s Mark Hamill PSA About STAR WARS And Birth Defects

If you thought Star Wars marketing is out of control right now with The Force Awakens, you weren't around back in the day. It's cool, I wasn't either, but the veteran geeks tell me about how you couldn't go anywhere without seeing Star Wars. They were even in government public service announcements!

Here's an extra bizarre one where Mark Hamill educates us on the risk of birth defects and children. Who better than a character who had to live with his father's mistakes his entire life. Waiting for the Star Wars part? Just wait...it's worth it.

Okay the real one doesn't have the lightsaber, but it's still plenty weird.

Kevin Feige Says DOCTOR STRANGE Will Include The Dark Dimension

$

In the most recent issue of Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talked about meeting Benedict Cumberbatch for the first time a few years ago to discuss Doctor Strange. He also talked about the movie being different from anything Marvel has made so far, and he confirmed that the movie will feature the Dark Dimension!

When talking about meeting Cumberbatch for the first time to discuss the project, Feige recalled:

“After [Benedict] left, [executive producer] Stephen Broussard and I looked at each other and said, ‘I think Doctor Strange was just here.’”

Explaining what made the Cumberbatch perfect for the role of Dr. Stephen Strange, Feige saidd that the character is “an arrogant neurosurgeon in Manhattan, living a very opulent lifestyle. He gets into a horrible car accident and his hands, the tools by which he can do amazing surgeries, are mangled and destroyed. That starts his downward path, and that's why Benedict is such a great choice - you can go to the highest heights and lowest lows with him and he won't lose you.”

As we've seen in the photos that have been released, Cumberbatch looks freakin' great as the Sorcerer Supreme! I'm sure the guy will give a great performance as well because he's an amazing actor.

Feige went on to say that Doctor Strange “couldn't be any more different than any of the films that have come before it. He explains that "there are more things that lurk in shadows in this movie, perhaps, than our other movies.” He's obviously referring to the interdimensional beings that Doctor Strange will be protecting humanity from.

The producer then went on to confirm that the Dark Dimension will be included in the film saying:

“We see glimpses of something called the Dark Dimension. But if you were to open a Doctor Strange comic drawn by Steve Ditko, you would see the Dark Dimension is, in fact, very colorful in an extremely psychedelic way. Those are the things we're not shying away from.”

I love it when they mention that Steve Ditko and his comic are a heavy inspiration for this film! The fact that The Dark Dimension will be a part of the story might give us a hint of who Mads Mikkelsen and Amy Landecker could be playing. The Dark Dimension is where the villains Dormammu and Umar reside. They are siblings who were banished to the Dark Dimension in the comics. Those characters could be played by Mikkelsen and Landecker, if they decided to go that route. However, after Feige gave the following description of Mikkelsen's character:

“Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect. [He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through...”

one of our readers suggested that perhaps Mikkelsen's character "is the precursor to what eventually becomes Dormammu," which is a theory that I can get behind. After all, Feige says we will only see glimpses of the Dark Dimension. Those glimpses could come at the end of the film, and that character arc could continue in the sequel.

Of course, there are several other mystical characters tied to the Dark Dimension, so we'll just have to wait and see how this story plays out. What are some of your theories and thoughts on all of this? The movie hits theaters on November 4th, 2015.

Here's Exactly Who's To Blame For The Lackluster TRUE DETECTIVE Season 2

$
0
0

If you've been following along with HBO's True Detective, it's very likely you noticed a tremendous drop in quality from the show's outstanding first season to its crushingly disappointing second season. In the last piece for this site that I wrote about the show, the network, who was disappointed by the reaction to the second season, presented series creator/showrunner (and sole writer) Nic Pizzolatto with a few options about how to move forward for a potential third season: he could bring on a writing staff, have a new showrunner come in, or allow Pizzolatto to write the entire thing himself again. Though it wasn't clear at the time, I guessed that that last option would include a longer time between seasons to give the writer more time to craft a new story, and now it appears that suspicion holds true.

In an interview with The Frame (via Uproxx), president of programming Michael Lombardo revealed that actually he is the one to blame when it comes to how the second season turned out:

I’ll tell you something. Our biggest failures — and I don’t know if I would consider “True Detective 2” — but when we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it’s ready, when it’s baked — we’ve failed. And I think in this particular case, the first season of “True Detective” was something that Nic Pizzolatto had been thinking about, gestating, for a long period of time. He’s a soulful writer. I think what we did was go, “Great.” And I take the blame. I became too much of a network executive at that point. We had huge success. “Gee, I’d love to repeat that next year.”
Well, you know what? I set him up. To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That’s not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that’s what I learned from it. Don’t do that anymore.
And I’d love to have the enviable certainty of knowing what my next year looks like. I could pencil things in. But I’m not going to start betting on them until the scripts are done.

That's a rare admission of guilt from a network executive, and it's nice to hear that he's learned from the mistake of trying to force creatives to work to a release date instead of letting the work form more naturally. Movie studio executives should probably take note here — this is a big part of the reason most blockbuster movies don't turn out great. Talented filmmakers can sometimes overcome challenges and make films better than they have any right to be when they're up against insanely tight deadlines (see: The Force Awakens), but more often than not, if the script isn't ready to go but filming begins anyway, it's not going to be successful on a story or character level.

FARGO's Rachel Keller Joins FX's X-MEN Spin-Off TV Show LEGION

Despite petering out a little at the very end, I really enjoyed the second season of FX's Fargo. I'm very impressed with what showrunner/creator Noah Hawley was able to do by pivoting to a prequel period piece, and I'm extremely excited to see what he does next. One of his upcoming projects happens to be an X-Men spin-off TV pilot (also for FX) called Legion, and he's tapped one of his Fargo actors to appear in a lead role. Deadline reports that Rachel Keller, who played Simone Gerhardt in season 2, will play the female lead, "a scrappy, optimistic woman in her 20s." Her character name and mutant powers are being kept under wraps for now, but there's early rumor that her powers could be "tied to human touch," so feel free to speculate away in the comments.

The show is described as follows:

Legion tells the story of David Haller. Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.

Comic fans will recognize the name David Haller as the son of Professor Charles Xavier. Legion is the first of two X-Men-themed shows that are currently in the works, with Hellfire being the other one. You can read more about that right here. No word yet on when production begins on the Legion pilot or when it might make it to the small screen, but we'll keep you posted.

This INCEPTION-Inspired Coffee Table Will Turn Your World Upside Down

Christopher Nolan's mind-bending 2010 film Inception inspired artist Stelios Mousarris to create this awesome coffee table that features a city folding over on top of itself.

Inspired by a film this table is a well balanced mixture of wood, steel and 3D printed technology.

You can buy one at his website, but it'll set you back €4000.00, or about $4300 U.S. dollars, which might be worth it if it was entirely hand-carved, but I feel like 3D printing is cheating a little bit. Would you put this in your living room if you had the cash?

First Trailer For Baz Luhrmann's 1970s Music-Infused Drama THE GET DOWN

$
0
0

Following his take on The Great Gatsby in 2013, director Baz Lurhmann is bringing his visual talents to Netflix for a New York-set, music-infused drama called The Get Down, which takes place in the 1970s and involves the burgeoning music scenes of hip-hop, punk, and disco. This is Lurhmann's first major TV project, so I'm hoping the extended run time will give him enough time to devote to other aspects of storytelling aside from the stylish visuals for which he's known. If the trailer is any indication, it appears that the show is a mixture of West Side Story, Dirty Dancing, and Footloose, but set in a black community. This should be a cool showcase for a bunch of up-and-coming actors, as well as established vets like Dexter's Jimmy Smits and Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito.

There's no specific release date set aside from the vague "2016," but check out the trailer and the official synopsis below:

The Get Down focuses on 1970s New York — broken down and beaten up, violent, cash strapped — dying. Consigned to rubble, a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers are nothings and nobodies with no one to shelter them — except each other, armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans. From Bronx tenements, to the SoHo art scene; from CBGB to Studio 54 and even the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center, The Get Down is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco — as told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city and the world…forever.
