Singapore Creates Incredibly Lifelike Receptionist Android

$

Pretty lifelike android, right? Maybe not, if you're looking at the picture above and thinking the android is the one on screen and not in the chair! "Nadine" is a product of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, which specializes in robotics and their social interactions with humans. Nadine will serve as a receptionist for the university and according to Quartz, she's "...like a real companion that is always with you and conscious of what is happening.”

As you watch the video below, you'll quickly realize that the real illusion fades as she begins to speak. The mouth is still a little rigid and the hand movements are jerky, but the information is sound and on par with that of Cortana or Siri. She can also express emotion, although the university would not elaborate if murderous rage was in her. NTU hopes that one day Nadine will be able to perform language and etiquette not unlike C-3PO. If she speaks Bocce, I'm sure my uncle Owen will take her off a couple Jawas' hands.

Funny STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Fan Trailer

Sweded fan-made trailers don't always work for me, but this one taking aim at Star Wars: The Force Awakens has so many great little touches (the bubbles, the extra spins from Finn after the Poe shoulder touch, etc.) that it had me smiling all the way through it. Hopefully you get a kick out of it.

A brief note: I think it's kind of awesome that it's a dude playing the part of Rey here. Not because there need to be more men in the Star Wars universe (there absolutely do not), but because she's such a great character that she's relatable to everyone regardless of gender.

Here's What Happens When THE FLASH Comes Back

*This article contains spoilers for the current season of The Flash. I really question why you clicked this to begin with if this bothers you.*

Alright, so last we left off with Barry and the gang, it was Christmas and a surprise guest arrived at the door. The revelation of Wally West by far was the coolest news to come to the series all season, and I'm really excited for what this means in the long run! For those unaware (not many of you I'm sure), Wally in many comic continuities has taken over the mantle of Flash using his intellect to create a speed suit. That's all down the road (hopefully), and for now The CW is keeping us in the present by releasing a synopsis for the mid-season premiere on January 19th...

“Potential Energy” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-PG, LV) (HDTV)
JOE AND IRIS GET TO KNOW WALLY — Now that they’ve grown closer, Barry (Grant Gustin) considers telling Patty (guest star Shantel VanSanten) that he is The Flash. Meanwhile, Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and Iris (Candice Patton) try to get to know Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale), and the team hunts down a meta-human who can slow time itself. Rob Hardy directed the episode written by Bryan Q. Miller (#210).  Original airdate 1/19/2016.

So doesn't look like we are going to get right into Flash Wally yet, but it does look like we get a new meta-human...or potentially a well-known meta-human who has a new ability?! Can't wait for these next couple of weeks to go by!

Hilarious STAR WARS Recut Shows Ewoks Are Terrible Drivers

Despite their seemingly cute and harmless nature, the Ewoks were pivotal in the Rebel victory in the battle of Endor. What if they were really just as incompetent as we thought at first glance, however? This clip below shows just how "useful" an Ewok might be in the real world. It's a hilarious recut by TVMasterDude, whom you should definitely follow!

Script Details From THE FORCE AWAKENS Reveal More About Film's Final Scene

*Hey there are spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in here, so do with that information what you will.*

The guys over at /Film have obtained a copy of the script for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and have uncovered even more detail behind what was happening in the film's final moments. So what we saw was Rey and crew land the Falcon on a planet, she presents a lightsaber to none other than Luke Skywalker, and roll credits...BUT APPARENTLY THERE WAS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT!

For starters, Luke's reaction to seeing her, according to the script, is one of "kindness and something tortured" and he “doesn’t need to ask her who she is, or what she is doing here.” Either this means Luke just knows Rey's capability with the Force and why she was drawn to him, or he knows exactly who she is. I'm going to guess the latter, and with this new info I'm now going with the popular theory that she is his daughter!

The planet Rey and Chewie land on is named "AHCH-To" which is completely new to the Star Wars universe. The description of it involves pristine blue oceans, black rock islands and forests...which sound like a much more badass training ground than Dagobah. Something the /Film guys picked up on was that AHCH is Hebrew for the word "brother"...but then actually pronouncing AHCH-To sounds like "Act Two," and both sound equally convincing to me.

The implication that Rey could potentially be the sister of Luke Skywalker though...I'm digging that idea. Maybe in Luke's travels he learned of a clone created of Anakin or something. I won't get too speculative — you can do that in the comments.

There's also more information regarding Rey's vision sequence, so make sure to check out the link!

Zombie Blast Is The Crazy Hong Kong Toy You Didn't Know You Wanted

Full disclosure: this toy is silly, requires a lot of batteries, and looks straight out of a '90s Toys R Us ad...AND I WANT IT. Zombie Blast is a small zombie doll that attacks you. To "kill" it, you have to use your LED pistol and shoot it 9 times to deactivate it. As you shoot, Zombie Blast shoots its arms off, and in a final dramatic shot, hurls itself onto its back in defeat. It's pretty comical and would be a blast to have on your desk when you get bored. Apparently the toy is getting big in Japan, hence why we are learning about it now. Check out the video below, and if you want to get one as a late Christmas present, click here!

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Promo Art Shows Falcon and Redwing in Action

Some new promo art for Captain America: Civil War has surfaced, and it features Falcon and his sidekick Redwing in action. In the movie, Redwing will not be a bird like in the comics. Redwing is a drone, which can transform. Anyone who got to attended the D23 Expo earlier this year got to see Redwing in action, and you can read about that scene here. If you weren’t there, then you can get your first look at the robotic sidekick below. I also included a piece of Ant-Man hitching a ride on one of Hawkeye's arrows.

It makes complete sense to me that Marvel would make the change from a real bird to a drone. Although, it would be kinda funny to see an Disney-style animated bird helping Falcon out on his adventures.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6, 2016.

Wicked Cool Custom-Made STAR WARS-Inspired Dresses

Check out this amazing collection of custom-made Star Wars dresses. They were designed by Catherine Elhoffer, and if you're a geek girl looking for badass Star Wars fashion, then look no further! As you’ll see, she was inspired by the Jedi, the Sith, and even the new droid, BB-8.

Ok Instagram family, I'm working out the kinks in a #bb8 inspired dress. I think the main grey needs to be lighter, but im not loving the silver at the shoulders. Should I make it white? Orange? Thoughts?? #star wars #sewing #geekfashion #geekbound #starwarstheforceawakens #starwarsfashion #forceawakens #droid #design #geekchic #geek

Ok, first, the response on the #Jedi dress is insane so you all are amazing. I'm opening back up for commissions just after the new year so if you want anything that I've posted, message or email me your preference and your dress size and I'll get you a quote. Now, after doing the Jedi dress, I thought it looked a lot like one of my fav pieces of #queenamidala (technically #sabe): the battle dress she wears to retake #naboo. Red scuba is the base, black stretch velvet is the tabard, and black stretch vinyl is the Obi. The colors on this are so rich, and of course there are side pockets!! Ask the sleeves have a pointed accent where the velvet meets the scuba. I wish I had made this earlier as it looks perfect for a holiday party! There's always next year ;) #starwars #starwarsfashion #phantommenace #episode1 #padme #padmeamidala #amidalacollection #geekchic #geek #geekgirl #geekbound #geekfashion #velvet #red #sewing #seamstress #inspired

Ok, I am totally in love with this #Jedi dress I whipped up today. Still have to cover stitch, but I had to share. This dress features chocolate stretch vinyl and mocha scuba. Oh and side pockets. Duh. I want to drop the waist a bit more so the Obi isn't in the way of the chest, but I still love it. ;) now it just needs a matching robe... #fashiondesign #fashion #design #fangirl #geekbound #geek #geekchic #geekfashion #starwars #jediknight #jedimaster #obiwan #lukeskywalker

Ok, thanks to everyone here who gave feedback about the #bb8 dress I mocked up. Here's what I'm thinking for the final color scheme!! Still gotta add an orange or silver band around the neckline, but I am now super happy with this adorable cinnamon roll!!!! Complete with orange side pockets, too!! #starwars #forceawakens #sewing #design #spandex #inspiration #fangirl #geek #geekchic #geekgirl #geekbound #geekfashion #starwarsfashion #droid #thesearethedroidsyourelookingfor #poedameron #fashion #seamstress

Just completed a #Rey dress in a size 12 for a curvy girl that I can't wait for pics of!! I love making apparel for all shapes and sizes, especially when it's for ladies that are often overlooked in the modern stores. I also revised the skirt to look more like Rey's #costume, after seeing the movie I was super inspired!! #starwars #TheForceAwakens #forceawakens #tfa #skywalker #jedi #beige #jediknight #sewing #seamstress #geek #geekchic #geekgirl #geekfashion #geekbound #fangirl #design #fashion #fashiondesign

Soo, anyone wanna guess my inspo for this dress??? Still #starwars #forceawakens... Brown stretch vinyl with red vinyl accents and black scuba on front and back. Oh, and an adorable peplum too. #geekchic #geek #geekbound #geekfashion #fangirl #sewing #design #spandex #inspiration

I'm so happy with how my new #Rey inspired dress has turned out! She's completely #sewn up and ready to photograph!! A hi-low hem, side seam pockets, split front neckline, stretch vinyl belt detail, and heavyweight scuba has this dress ready for the office or out for a night of partying with your own #Finn ;) I'll be taking more commissions soon, just finishing up some more dresses first! <3 #starwars #forceawakens #starwarsfashion #jedi #beige #sewing #design #fashion #geekbound #fashiondesign #geekfashion #geekchic #geek #commission

Christopher Lee Really Wanted to Play Gandalf in LORD OF THE RINGS

Last year, legendary actor Christopher Lee passed away. He had the opportunity to star in some pretty awesome and wonderful films over the course of his career. His role as Saruman the White in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings is definitely one of his most memorable roles.

According to Jackson, Lee was actually more interested in the taking on the role of Gandalf in the fantasy epic. The director wanted him in the role of Saruman from the very beginning, but Lee really, really wanted to play Gandalf.

During a recent interview with EW, Jackson recounted the story of what went down when they met with Lee and what it was like for them throughout the shoot because apparently the whole time Lee was bummed out he wasn’t playing Gandalf.

“A very awkward 30 minutes followed, with Fran and I trying our best to explain to a rather peeved Christopher Lee that we were already talking to Ian McKellen about Gandalf — but what an incredible Saruman he would be!
“Chris wasn’t hearing a bar of it, and eventually commanded us to turn on the video camera so he could audition for Gandalf ... Eventually we confirmed Ian for Gandalf and officially offered Chris the Saruman role. We started shooting, and whenever we discussed Saruman’s scenes with Chris, he would always feel the need to say, ‘You must understand, Peter — he’s really not an evil man.’ He was carrying some heavy scars of Dracula of his own, and I felt it quite strongly.
“Chris also let Ian McKellen know that he had really been hoping to play Gandalf. At one point during the shoot, Chris said, ‘I’m perfectly happy to be in an ‘Ian McKellen film.’ Ian immediately turned to Chris, and with great affection he replied, ‘But not as thrilled as I am — to be in a ‘Christopher Lee movie’!’
“That was the bittersweet reality with Chris — while he regarded his cinematic history with a certain amount of disdain, everyone around him had the opposite opinion.”

Make sure to read the entire interview here. It’s worth the time, especially if you’re a fan of Lee’s work.

THE REVENANT Featurettes Focus on the Epic Story and Themes of the Film

Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu and Leonadro DiCaprio’s The Revenant is such an insanely good film! I caught an early screening of it, and I absolutely loved the maddening journey. While you wait to see the movie for yourself, we have a couple of fascinating must watch featurettes in which the cast and the crew talk about the themes of the film, the story, and the true story that it’s based on.

Iñárritu describes the film as being “beautifully savage, horrendously poetic and epic at the same time.” It certainly looks that way in the trailers that I’ve seen.

Inspired by true events, ‘The Revenant’ is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.

The movie also stars Tom HardyDomhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter. It is based on the novel by Michael Punke. The film will get a full theatrical release on January 8th, 2016
