The latest cover for Entertainment Weekly features our first official look at Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel's upcoming Doctor Strange Film. It's awesome that he's in full costume, and I absolutely love the look of it! It's exactly what I was hoping it would look like. It completely nails the style from the comics.

Director Scott Derrickson is currently shooting the film, and we've already seen photos and video from the Nepal set of the film. Cumberbatch talked to EW about the physicality of casting spells:

“I’m still in the infancy of learning all that. It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”

As far as the psychedelic visual effects in the film goes, Cumberbatch went on to say, “There’s going to be crazy s— going on.”

The movie co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton. The movie hits theaters on November 4th, 2016!

Daniel Stern Releases Funny Response to Macaulay Culkin’s HOME ALONE Reprisal

A couple weeks ago we posted a great short film in which Macaulay Culkin returned as an older, messed up, and deranged version of Kevin Mcallister from Home Alone. The short is called “Just Me in the House By Myself.” Since that video was released, Daniel Stern, who played Marv in the Home Alone films, reprised his role as Marv for an awesome video response.

In the video, Marv sees the short of Kevin all grown-up, and he's absolutely terrified. Marv is trying to reach out to Harry to come and find him and help him. It’s pretty amazing. I would love to see Joe Pesci release a video response next!

This whole thing really makes me want to see these guys get together to create some kind of insane, ultra-violent R-rated sequel that takes place all these years later. There’s a huge audience out there for something like that, so it’d be crazy if someone doesn’t try to do this.

DEADPOOL Director Discusses Negasonic Teenage Warhead's Powers

Over the holiday weekend, 20th Century Fox released two trailers for the upcoming Deadpool movie, one of which was a red-band trailer that fans absolutely loved. These trailers offered us our first look at Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead showing her powers in action.

It was surprising to see because, in the comics, Negasonic Teenage Warhead's power set was purely psychic, but as you saw in the trailer, director Tim Miller gave her some new abilities that are definitely more fitting of her name. During a recent interview with Empire, Miller talked about her powers:

"Her power, I mean, we chose her because we wanted a trainee for Colossus in the film and the writers and I just fell in love with her name. It’s just so out there and so Deadpool and it was Grant Morrison who named her, so we knew we had to get her in there. And then we thought, well, we’re going to need to make her powers fit with who she feels like she is in the movie and so to me it’s just like other characters in the Marvel universe, like Nitro, for instance, whose power is to just explode parts of their body. But we did try to do it so that it wasn’t just a simple, ‘oh, I can explode’, she can transfer the force of the explosion down so she can move upwards - she can put it into a punch if she wanted to. So it was really just her fist exploding as she hit somebody. we tried to mix it up, even though we didn’t use that particular thing in the movie, but it was the idea. Actually, we did use it in the movie, it’s just not in the movie now!"

Miller went on to talk about Negasonic Teenage Warhead's personality and her relationship with the Merc with a Mouth.

"I think Deadpool wishes she’d keep her mouth shut more than she does in the film! Because she’s quite snarky,” but, you know, her whole attitude is this disaffected teen who thinks Deadpool’s just a douchebag. And so that’s her whole attitude. She’s really not that silent in the film or at least she’s silently surly because she just can’t be bothered to engage with this a**hole. That’s the basics of her personality: silently shaming, judgemental personality."

That definitely comes across in the trailers! She seems like she’ll be a fun character for Deadpool to interact with. The movie hits theaters on February 12th, 2016. To watch the latest trailers again, click here

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Was Almost Titled "Shadow of the Empire"

When the title for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was initially announced, it was well-received by almost all fans of the saga. The Force Awakens had a healthy dose of mysticism mixed with subtlety and a though-provoking tone. But most of all, it definitely conveyed a message and a promise for something grander. However, there was a time when the seventh movie almost inherited a title from a book that used to be canon.

Pablo Hidalgo, Creative Executive for the Lucasfilm Story Group, told Jedi News:

"For longest time, the TFA title was the same as an old novel. Thankfully it changed. :) With so many books, it's inevitable... it was Shadow (singular) of the Empire for a while."

The book Shadows of the Empire took place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. In my personal opinion, if the new Star Wars movie had been called Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire, it would have sent much more confusing signals to fans, and I don’t really think it would have matched the plot and the spin of actions the way The Force Awakens does.

In the opening episode, Mulder and Scully take on a case of a possible alien abductee. The all-new episodes will feature appearances by guest stars, including Joel McHale (“Community”), Robbie Amell (“The Flash”), Lauren Ambrose (“Dig,” “Six Feet Under”), Annabeth Gish (“The Bridge”), Annet Mahendru (“The Americans”), Rhys Darby (“Flight of the Conchords”), Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”) and William B. The X-Files originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Mulder (David Duchovny), as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.

5 Ways That Movie Trailers Are All The Same

The art of creating a movie trailer and poster for film has become a science over the years. Trailers are made to get people to come see the movie they are promoting. Some of them can be deceiving, some of them give way too much away, some don’t give you enough information, and others are just perfect.

I love watching movie trailers! I’m one of those guys that can’t miss the trailers when I go to the movies. Screen Rant has released interesting video that points out five of the tricks that we see in lots of trailers. Those are the foghorn, the bass drop, ominous voice-over, the montage, and the final gag.

Nothing gets movie fans talking like an action packed trailer, which means the first public look at an upcoming film really can mean the difference between a runaway blockbuster and a box office disappointment. It's not all that shocking that movie trailers - just like movie posters - have become an exact science, with the same colors, poses, and tricks used by every major studio. But once you take a closer look at blockbuster trailers, you may be surprised at just how similar they really are. Here are Screen Rant's 5 Ways Movie Trailers Are All The Same.

Dedicated to the fight against new Atomic Age threats in the wake of World War II, Peggy must now journey from New York City to Los Angeles for her most dangerous assignment yet. Agent Carter returns for a two hour premiere event on January 19th at 9pm.

Theory on Rey's Origin in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

$
0
0

By the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rey has become stronger in the Force without any proper Jedi training, but we still are left in the dark about her her lineage.

What we know about Rey:

  • She was ditched on Jakku by her supposed "family" when she was a young girl.
  • She has been waiting for at least 10 years for them to return.
  • During her years savaging on the harsh surface of Jakku she has gained a complete understanding of how things work (expert mechanic).
  • She becomes aware of her force abilities during her visit to Maz Kanata.
  • While being held prisoner at Starkiller base, she learns how to properly execute a Jedi Mind trick.
  • She uses force pull during the lightsaber fight with Kylo Ren and defeats him with Luke's old saber.
  • She locates Luke Skywalker to presumably start her Jedi training

Here is my theory:

Everyone thinks she is Luke's offspring, I however do not!  THIS IS WHY!

We already know where Kylo Ren comes from. He is in fact the estranged son of Han Solo and Leia Organa. He was given the name Ben Solo (possibly named after Obi Wan Kenobi??) at birth.

If Rey does turn out to be Luke's daughter, Episode VIII better be titled, Star Wars: Horrible Parents because it seems no one in this universe knows how to take care of their own kids.

Also, linking Rey to Luke and Kylo Ren to Leia diminishes the size of the Star Wars Universe significantly, limiting it to a soap opera-style "everyone is connected to everyone" type story.

I will say the good cousin vs bad cousin dynamic is a bit interesting, but it would feel like a direct repeat of the father vs son story arc in episodes IV-VI. (Kind of like how there always seems to be a death star.)

Here is what I think is ACTUALLY going on:

If we think back to the prequels (I know, they're horrible) the great Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn discovers a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker who was strong in the Force.

His mother says Anakin has no father and was conceived by "the will of the force."

Because of this and his ridiculously high midi-chlorian count, Qui-Gon quickly believes that Anakin is in fact "The Chosen One," according to ancient Jedi Prophecies, the "one who will bring balance to the Force" and tries to convince the Jedi council to allow him to train the boy.

And through the remainder of the prequel trilogy there are many references to "Ani" being the "Chosen One," even up to his final showdown with his Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

After their epic lightsaber duel on the harsh planet of Mustafar, Obi-Wan tells a defeated Anakin "You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!"

Anakin later becomes Vader and, presumably, does not fullfill that ancient Jedi prophecy.

Now to The Force Awakens (My Speculation)

  • Rey is in fact NOT related to anyone we have seen in a Star Wars movie to date.
  • She was ditched on Jakku for a reason. Maybe out of fear?
  • Maybe because she, like Anakin, had no father and was conceived "by the Will of the Force."
  • She already seems to be more powerful than any untrained Jedi that we have seen in a Star Wars movie.
  • She has already taught herself specific Jedi powers without any proper Jedi training.

Dare I say that Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and the entire Jedi council in Episodes I-III were completely wrong, and Rey is in fact "The Chosen One" the Jedi Prophecies speak of, the "One who WILL bring balance to the Force?"

Well, we shall see. I can't wait for Episode VIII!

Did I miss anything that disproves my theory? I'm open to discussion.

Awesome IP MAN 3 Clip Features Yip Man Testing Bruce Lee

The first clip from Ip Man 3 has been released, and it features Donnie Yen as Yip Man meeting a confident Bruce Lee, who is played by Kwok-Kwan Chan. In the clip, Lee reminds Yip Man that he came to him as a child looking to study with him, and Yip goes right into testing Lee's martial arts skills and speed. It's a pretty awesome clip that fans of this franchise should enjoy. I'm a huge fan of the first two films, and I'm excited to see this third chapter!

Donnie Yen (upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2) ignites the screen in a return to the role that made him an icon - as Ip Man, the real-life Wing Chun grandmaster who mentored Bruce Lee. In this explosive third installment of the blockbuster martial arts series, when a band of brutal gangsters led by a crooked property developer (Mike Tyson) make a play to take over the city, Master Ip is forced to take a stand. Fists will fly as some of the most incredible fight scenes ever filmed play out on the big screen in this soon-to-be genre classic.

Ip Man 3 was released in Hong Kong on December 24th and will be released in the U.S. on January 22nd, 2016. I can’t wait to see it! If you haven't watched the trailer for this movie yet, click here. Thanks to comingsoon.net for the clip.

Listen: Radiohead's Unused SPECTRE Theme Song

When it comes to James Bond movie theme songs, I was disappointed with Sam Smith's "The Writing's On The Wall." Granted, it's almost impossible for any mortal being to follow Adele's "Skyfall," but Smith's Spectre theme was too quiet and contemplative for my tastes.

Practically every Bond film has unused theme songs left by the wayside as the producers narrow down their final choice, but they often have a few versions to choose from since they can commission multiple artists to write and perform a theme. Such is the case with Spectre, when EON Productions head honchos Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson asked Radiohead for a theme song. They obviously ended up going in a different direction, and normally Radiohead's song would have been left as an obscure piece of trivia that only hardcore fans might have been able to track down.

But on Christmas Day, the band released the full track on Soundcloud for everyone to hear, along with this statement:

Last year we were asked to write a theme tune for the Bond movie Spectre.
Yes we were. It didn’t work out, but became something of our own, which we love very much.
As the year closes we thought you might like to hear it.
Merry Christmas. May the force be with you.

Listen to the song in the player below:

For me, this song suffers from the same problems as Smith's: it's too quiet, too slow, and doesn't ever kick up to a higher, more energetic level. From an audio perspective, it seems too similar throughout, and there's not even a catchy chorus. In fact, I can't even figure out when the verses end and the chorus begins. A little distinction there would have done this song a lot of good, and I can see why the producers chose to go with Smith's more traditional version. What do you think?

Mystical New Photos and Concept Art From Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE

Earlier this morning, we got our first look at Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in Marvel's upcoming film. EW has since released some new images from the film, including new photos of Cumberbatch sporting the awesome look of the Sorcerer Supreme, along with some extremely cool concept art for you to check out. There's some great stuff here, one piece in particular teases the psychedelic visual tone of the film. I can't wait to see this charcter in magical action on the big screen!

Each image comes along with a quote from Cumberbatch, director Scott Derrickson, and producer Kevin Fiege. The one above included a quote from the actor saying:

“These gestures are ways of creating the magic. It’s a beautiful thing, it’s balletic, it’s very dynamic. And once the boys in the backroom get to work on it, there’s going to be crazy s--t going on."

"There’s all sorts of craziness [in Doctor Strange]," says Cumberbatch. "Falling, flying, jumping, fighting, punching, getting punched. It’s really rough and tumble."

"I’m perpetually awestruck that I’m getting to make this movie," director Scott Derrickson tells EW. "I keep waiting for the knock on the door when somebody says, 'This movie’s too weird, we can’t make this.'"
stunning-new-photos-and-concept-art-from-marvels-doctor-strange5
"When this comic appeared in the early '60s, it really informed, in a way that is pretty amazing, a lot of the psychedelic '60s as we know it. I don’t know that they were doing anything weird in the bullpen in Marvel, but certainly the stuff they were doing inspired all those people who were doing mind-expansion experiments at the time," explains producer Kevin Feige. "So, that's inherent to the property. And that's our mission statement for the visual effects on this movie."
stunning-new-photos-and-concept-art-from-marvels-doctor-strange6
"[Benedict] was someone that we were very interested in for a very long time," reveals Feige. "But he kept getting more popular, and more popular, and he kept getting busier, and busier, and it looked like the timing wasn’t going to work. So we looked at some other actors for a while and ultimately decided, ‘We have to try and make it work with Benedict and with his schedule.’"

Kevin Feige Offers Details on Mads Mikkelsen's Villainous Role in DOCTOR STRANGE

We've known for some time now that Mads Mikkelsen will be playing the villain in Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange. We don't exactly know who he'll be playing yet, but he is the main villain in the story. During an interview with EW, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talked about the film and the scary villain that it will introduce:

“We will take audiences through sort of a guide to the multiverse, other dimensions, and there are amazing things out there — wonders that are going to be hopefully visually extremely interesting and unique to this movie, but there are also very scary things in these other dimensions.”

Feige goes on to explain that it's the job of sorcerers like Strange and The Ancient One, who is played by Tilda Swinton, to protect humanity from these “scary things.” So how does Mikkelsen's character fit into the story?

“Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect. [He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.”

Feige will not say who the villain is yet, and according to him, no one has guessed who it is. Executive producer Stephen Broussard says:

“I’ve seen lots of names thrown around. No one has quite picked the name that we’ve chosen for him. It would be fun to conceal that, if we can.”

It was previously rumored that Dormammu would be the main villain in the film. Nothing was ever confirmed, though, so the villain's identity remains a mystery. Who do you think the villain will be?

New Details About Rachel McAdams' DOCTOR STRANGE Character

$

There's been speculation that Rachel McAdams would be playing Night Nurse in Doctor Strange ever since she was originally cast in the upcoming superhero film. The latest rumor to hit the interwebs was that McAdams is playing the character of Christine Palmer, one of three main female hospital employees featured in the comic Night Nurse from the early '70s. Now it appears that information may have been correct.

EW has some new information on McAdams' role, and while they won't give up the character's name, it certainly seems to point to the rumor being confirmed:

“Rachel McAdams plays a fellow surgeon that has a history with Strange and is his sort of lynchpin to his old life, once he steps into he role of a sorcerer,” says Kevin Feige, the producer of Doctor Strange and president of Marvel Studios. “She is someone he connects with at the beginning, and reconnects with, and helps anchor his humanity.”
“Rachel McAdams is sort of [Doctor Strange’s] contemporary in the modern-day New York world, before and after he goes on this crazy journey,” elaborates Doctor Strange executive producer Stephen Broussard. “So, she sees him before, she sees him after. She’s kind of this audience point of view.”

As for whether or not she's playing a love interest for the Sorcerer Supreme, star Benedict Cumberbatch says, "I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say what the interest is. But if I hit on her more than the Ancient One, put it like that.” I'm not sure if the word "if" is supposed to be in his second sentence or if that's just a typo on EW's part, but either way, the point he's making seems clear. What do you all think? Looking forward to Doctor Strange? A bunch of new photos and an EW cover were released this morning, so you can check those out along with all of our other Doctor Strange-related content right here.

Quentin Tarantino and J.J. Abrams Nearly Teamed Up For a Surprising Movie Adaptation

$

Quentin Tarantino and J.J. Abrams are facing off at the box office right now, and considering Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already made over a billion dollars, I have a feeling it might end up taking down The Hateful Eight in the long run. But while the two directors — who are friendly with each other in person — are currently engaged in a box office battle, I just learned that once, a long time ago, they could have worked on the same movie together.

Uproxx points me to a recent episode of the Nerdist podcast in which Tarantino reveals that back in the '90s, Richard Donner was trying to get a live-action version of Speed Racer going, and the script for the film came Tarantino's way. QT says he “really, really liked it. The script was better than the movie they ended up doing. It really did capture the comic book. He cracked it.” And as you might guess from the headline of this article, that screenplay was written by none other than J.J. Abrams. This was pre-Felicity, pre-Alias, pre-LOST, back in the days when Abrams wasn't nearly the well-respected filmmaker he is today. But Tarantino loved the script and almost ended up directing it.

Other filmmakers were attached over the years, and it almost went forward with Earth Girls Are Easy director Julien Temple directing it with Johnny Depp in the lead role. Budget concerns caused the project to be reworked with Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron eventually coming on board to direct a cheaper version of the film, but that ended up falling through also.

I really like the Wachowskis' Speed Racer, but it's crazy to think that we could have gotten a version written by J.J. Abrams and directed by Quentin Tarantino. If you're trying to fathom what that might have looked like, you can read what appears to be a real version of Abrams' script right here.

Chris Nolan's WWII Film DUNKIRK Confirmed; Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance in Talks

Earlier this morning, Joey wrote a piece speculating about how Christopher Nolan's next film might be a World War II drama, and now Variety has confirmed that report and provided a little more information about it.

The movie is called Dunkirk, and Nolan wrote the original screenplay himself. The story is inspired by Operation Dynamo, a 1940 mission that freed over 300,000 Allied troops who were trapped in the French city of Dunkirk by the Nazis. Nolan's wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, will produce, and Warner Bros. will release the film, which is already scheduled to hit theaters on July 21st, 2017.

Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Bridge of Spies breakout Mark Rylance are in talks to join the ensemble cast, which will reportedly be led by unknown, yet-to-be-hired actors. Production starts in May, and Nolan will be using a "combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film photography" to apply his signature larger-than-life visual style.

"We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time," said Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production. "Dunkirk is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen."

After the Dark Knight trilogy and a few sci-fi (or sci-fi tinged) projects like The Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar over the past few years, it'll be cool to see Nolan direct a period piece war movie. I'm guessing some fans are already hoping this will keep his perceived streak alive.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has taken the world by storm, and I'm sure most of you have seen it multiple times by now. I've been celebrating the holidays with family over the past week so I missed this when it came out, but I just noticed that CineFix has released a new 8-Bit Cinema video that centers on the original Star Wars trilogy, just in time for the new film's release.
