Breathtaking Visual Effects Breakdown Reel For Robert Zemeckis' THE WALK

$

If you didn't get a chance to see Robert Zemeckis' The Walk in IMAX 3D, you really missed out on something special. The Walk was an incredibly visually stunning film, and it was easily one of the greatest cinematic experiences of the year. Watching the movie on your TV just will not carry the same weight or awesomeness that it had on the big screen. This film affected me in a way that no other film has before in terms of feeling anxiety and profusely sweaty palms. I watched the movie in IMAX 3D three times while it was in theaters, forcing people to go see it who didn't want to. Of course, after they saw it they were blown away by the experience.

There's a lot of work that went into bringing the story of Philippe Petit to life and his 1974 high-wire walk across the twin towers. It was an especially huge undertaking for the special effects artists who worked on the project. They managed to bring the Twin Towers to life in astonishing detail. Atomic Fiction released a video reel that shows off a breakdown of the VFX that were completed for the movie and it's awesome! The VFX team went over tons of documents, original blueprints, and photos from the entire history of the buildings in New York City to make sure they got all the details just right.

KRAMPUS Director Michael Dougherty on Making an Amblin-Inspired Family Horror Film

krampus-director-michael-dougherty-on-making-a-amblin-inspired-family-horror-film

I recently had the opportunity to attend a press conference with Krampus director Michael Dougherty, who has directed both a Halloween movie with Trick 'r Treat and now a Christmas movie. After joking that the next holiday horror film he would be making would be set during Passover, he got into talking about his fantastically fun new film, Krampus.

One of my favorite aspects of the film was the terrifying creature designs. There were so many wonderfully horrific holiday monsters in it, and the design for Krampus himself was particularly nightmarish. When asked about coming up with the design for the character, the director shared that he got his start in the business doing traditional animation for Nickelodeon and MTV. He explained that when it comes to creating these films and developing the script and story, he dives into sketching things out:

“When I was working with my co-writers Todd Casey and Zack Shields, a lot of times we’d just be bouncing ideas around and I’d be in a sketch book drawing Krampus or creatures and things like that. One of the first get-togethers we had, we went to a bar in Hollywood and we were just chewing the fat and trying to figure out the story, and that's where the first sketch for Krampus happened. Then it became kind of an evolutionary chart from that really rough octal napkin sketch all the way to 3D model to eventual final creature. But I love doing visual development while writing, it’s really important.”

His love for visuals really shows in this movie, and if you’re a fan of horror, I think you’re going to love the stuff that he came up with. He went on to talk more about animation and says that he’d like to get back into it and make an animated film if someone would let him do something really dark. There’s actually an animated section in Krampus that was created to give us a backstory for the grandmother in the story, who is one of the main characters. The animation was created by Weta and was done in CG, but it was made to look like the stop motion animation from holiday films like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. When talking about his reason for doing the flashback scene in this style, he explained:

“It’s important to me that this movie is seen by kids. That it is meant to be a family horror movie, dark fairytale. One of my fondest memories was seeing Gremlins with my family. So if we’re going to teach kids or families about Krampus, it felt like it should be told by a grandmother as if it was an old fairytale. Because to me you're paying tribute to the source material, which is that’s how Krampus’ legend was told for centuries, was probably a grandmother telling it to her family around the fire.”

I loved that he made this film for families. It may be dark and disturbing, but it also has a positive message that people can learn from it. He went on to discuss his inspiration for the movie, and why he wanted to make this a family horror film. He also explains why it's good to give kids a healthy dose of fear now and then:

“It’s not a genre that’s done very often, I don’t think. A lot of horror movies are squarely aimed at teenagers which is why most horror movies involve five dumb teenagers going off into the woods and getting killed off one by one. A lot of the movie I grew up with, again it's that Amblin era, that '80 to '87, '88 where you had Gremlins and Poltergeist, Dark Crystal, there was just a great chunk of time when movies were willing to mix up genres. They were frankly willing to scare kids because I think back then movies gave kids more credit then we do right now. They knew kids were braver and more courageous. We didn’t think to make everything so kid safe. I personally believe that it’s OK to give kids a deathly dose of fear now and then because you teach them how to deal with anxiety and stress and fear. You don’t always have to round all the edges.”

He goes on to explain that movies like Gremlins and Poltergeist are films his family would watch together, and that’s something he wanted to achieve with Krampus. He concluded with talking about the challenge of blending a Christmas movie with a horror movie:

"It’s a Christmas movie at its core. It’s not just a slasher movie or a horror movie or just a monster movie. It was important for us to retain the Christmas spirit and actually have something to say about the state of the holiday. So that meant examining Christmas movies on a sort of their own genre and what a lot of them have in common are families struggling to deal with each other and deal with Christmas… So the idea of letting a horror movie invade that and forcing these families' fear to really come to life in a really different fashion was too tempting to resist.”

I grew up watching these same kinds of films and I get exactly what he’s saying, which is why I loved Krampus so much. It reminded me of those classic '80s films I grew up with. They don’t make movies like this anymore! Thankfully, we have a filmmaker like Michael Dougherty to make them for us. Thank you!

FARGO Season 3 Will Be Set After Season 1

$

I want to take this opportunity to once again implore you to watch the FX original series Fargo. Its second season, which is about to come to a close, is a blood-soaked masterclass from showrunner Noah Hawley, and while I liked the first season just a tiny bit better overall (so far, anyway), I think I'm in the minority on that — nearly everything I've heard from other fans of the show indicates that people love this season, a prequel set in 1979, even more than the first. I'm thankful that Hawley and company will be coming back for a third season, and now we have a little bit more information about what that might entail.

EW spoke with Hawley, who revealed that the new season will take place "a couple years after the first season," which was set in 2006. When asked whether or not we'll see characters from season one pop up again, or maybe even older versions of the characters who survive season two, Hawley simply said, "Potentially."

Allison Tolman's Molly Solverson is a big part of the reason why I fell in love with the first season, so any opportunity to possibly see her and Colin Hanks' Gus Grimly again would be welcome. But if that does happen, I sort of hope it's in a supporting capacity. As EW says, "Hawley has also previously expressed some reluctance to put Molly Solverson through the dramatic wringer again, given her character’s satisfying season 1 arc." Maybe the new season will follow a different character altogether. One thing's for sure: hints are being planted in the current season that we'll notice watching season 3:

“There are going to be connections, the way the first year was connected to the movie and the second year was connected to the first, but I think part of the fun is figuring that stuff out and I wouldn’t want to take that away from anybody,” he said. “There will be definitely things that connect to something in our story.”

I can't recommend this series highly enough, and I can't wait to watch it continue into a third season with Hawley at the helm. He's proven to be a brilliant showrunner, and I'll keep watching this show as long as he's involved.

This Actor Turned Down The Roles of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader in STAR WARS

$

George Lucas has been very open about the influence of Japanese cinema on the original Star Wars, especially the work of director Akira Kurosawa. But if he had his way, that influence would have extended to one of Kurosawa's biggest stars actually starring in his sci-fi epic.

THR reports that Toshiro Mifune, the actor who starred in Kurosawa classics like Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Rashoman, turned down the roles of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader in the original movie. Mifune's daughter spoke at a press event in Tokyo today and revealed the information to a crowd:

"I heard from my father that he was offered the role of Obi Wan Kenobi, but he was concerned about how the film would look and that it would cheapen the image of samurai, on which George Lucas had based a lot of the character and fighting style," said Mifune. "At the time, sci-fi movies still looked quite cheap as the effects were not advanced and he had a lot of samurai pride. So then, there was talk about him taking the Darth Vader role as his face would be covered, but in the end he turned that down too."

Both of those performances (well, technically three performances: Alec Guinness, David Prowse, and James Earl Jones) are so iconic, it's hard to imagine anyone else playing those characters, but I think Mifune might have been a better Obi-Wan than Darth Vader. What do you think?

Lucasfilm Meeting With Four Female Directors and Three Female Writers For New STAR WARS Films

Lucasfilm head honcho Kathleen Kennedy recently promised that she'd hire a female director for a Star Wars movie, and now it looks like the wheels are in motion for that to actually happen.

In a report from The LA Times (via ComingSoon) about a recent summit held by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute to discuss the issue of gender inequality in Hollywood, WME partner and agent Adriana Alberghetti said that as a result of the two-day summit, she secured meetings with four female directors and three female writers for upcoming Star Wars movies. That's great news for not only the industry itself, but for the audience watching these films, too. It's important to have different perspectives out there, and it's especially important when those perspectives are involved with what's likely to become the biggest film franchise in the world.

There's no word yet on who those candidates are, but Alberghetti represents directors S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) and Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum (Aquamarine) along with writers Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island, Terminator Genisys), Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, Maleficent), Dana Stevens (For The Love of The Game), Ann Biderman (Ray Donovan, Public Enemies, Primal Fear), so they seem like good guesses.

If your first instinct is to jump in the comments and say something like, "Why can't they just hire a good director, regardless of gender?" you should read the full article because the data they've compiled should answer that question.

Who would have ever thought that Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista would have landed two of the lead roles in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy? They were perfect, and now it's hard to imagine seeing anyone else playing these fantastic Marvel characters.

A new video has surfaced featuring an early screen test of Pratt and Bautista auditioning for the roles of Star-Lord and Drax. The video is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2 box set.

This was before Pratt got ripped for the role, and it's really interesting to see the dynamic between the two actors before they were officially cast in the film. They will both return to their roles in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2 box set is set for release on December 8th.

Who would have thought that a Jeep commercial would have featured some of the coolest Star Wars: The Force Awakens footage we've seen so far!? I'm not sure if this is actual footage from the film, but it shows us an epic space battle that focuses on a TIE Fighter and an X-Wing that are locked in an intense dogfight. BB-8 even makes an appearance in the back of Poe Dameron's X-Wing as he flies in for the rescue. This is awesome, and the commercial makes me even more proud to be a Jeep owner.

THE NICE GUYS: Shane Black's Buddy Comedy Gets a Great Red-Band Trailer

Here's the first trailer for Shane Black's new 1970s-set buddy comedy The Nice Guys. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling star as an enforcer and a private eye forced to work together to find a missing girl, and it looks like an absolutely perfect encapsulation of Black's style. When he said this was a spiritual sequel to the amazing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, he wasn't kidding.

This is definitely a red-band trailer, complete with F-bombs, some nudity, and a bunch of blood, and while I haven't seen a green-band trailer yet, I feel like this trailer has to be so much more representative of the tone we're going to see in the final film. I was already excited about The Nice Guys based on the premise and the talent involved, but this trailer makes it one of my most anticipated films of 2016. The movie hits theaters on May 20th, 2016.

Kathleen Kennedy Confirms This New FORCE AWAKENS Character Will Return in EPISODE VIII

If you're reading this, then I'll assume you're OK with some basic spoilers for The Force Awakens. If that doesn't sound like it applies to you, turn back now.

OK, here we go. Though much still remains a mystery about Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker, we already know that the character will survive the events of The Force Awakens and appear in Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII. Now, thanks to Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy, we know of one more character who will also be appearing in that film: Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma. From The L.A. Times:

Kennedy has big plans for Phasma and confirmed that the captain will carry on into the next movie. “She’s an important character, a baddie in the best sense of the word.”

Slashfilm also pointed out this cool quote I'd never seen before from J.J. Abrams, who says Christie's performance was his favorite of anyone in The Force Awakens:

"I can only say that Gwendoline Christie is my favorite. She just killed it. You think, “Well, what? It’s wearing a costume.” But it’s a lot to wear and to have a performance when you’re wearing that requires a different kind of skill set and an additional talent, and she’s got it. It’s an incredible thing to work with her. I am glad that a character has been designed that is visually as stunning as that is, because she deserves it and the fans do too. When I first saw that design my mind was blown because it looked so undeniable."

I'm glad to know that even if Christie gets killed off in upcoming seasons of Game of Thrones, we'll at least be able to see her being a badass in the Star Wars universe for one more movie. She looks spectacular in The Force Awakens, and I'm really looking forward to see how Captain Phasma factors into the action in a galaxy far, far away.

Review: THE REVENANT is a One of a Kind Revenge Thriller

$

Breathtaking, fierce, and truly awe-inspiring, The Revenant is a colossal cinematic achievement. Featuring riveting lead performances, numerous jaw-dropping moments, and some of the most gorgeous cinematography of all time, this is a revenge thriller that's intense, immersive, and absolutely one of a kind.

In the 1820s, Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) leads a group of fur trappers, including his half-Native American son, through the American wilderness under the command of William Ashley (Domhnall Gleeson). After a long season of trapping, they're ambushed by a local tribe and forced to flee their camp, with only a handful of men surviving the skirmish. As the survivors rest, Glass scouts ahead and stumbles across a couple of bear cubs — and their mother attacks him. He manages to kill the bear, but he's mutilated and broken to the point where he's a liability to the remaining men. They can't carry him across severe enemy terrain, so Ashley leaves three men behind to stay with him until he dies to give him a proper burial — Glass's son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck), the young Jim Bridger (Will Poulter), and the hot-headed John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). In a series of events I won't spoil, Glass ends up being buried alive and left for dead, and spends the rest of the film trying to claw his way back to life to get revenge.

It's easy to see why this was a notoriously troubled production. These characters (and the crew filming them) are out in some harsh elements, deep in territory that looks as if it's never been traversed by man as long as the planet has existed. That makes a huge difference, too — you really feel that they're out on location and not safe on a sound stage on a studio backlot. The logistics of how director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and his team pulled this off seem like a nightmare, and I'm hoping someone releases a detailed tell-all book or documentary about it one day because I'd love to hear a blow-by-blow account of exactly how this movie was accomplished.

As someone who didn't suffer for this project at all, I'm comfortable saying their struggles were worth it.

The cinematography by two-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezski would be legendary in its own right based solely on his decision to shoot only using natural light (something else that made the production a nightmare), but it also happens to be the most impressive work he's ever done, resulting in so many magnificent shots that I lost count a few minutes in. Lubezski flirts with the sun throughout the film, with bright rays peeking through groups of swaying trees (there's a tree motif that's thematically important to the story) and some of the most beautiful landscape shots you'll ever see.

Inarritu's last film, Birdman, was made to look as if it was filmed in one long continuous shot, but that mostly took place in a Broadway theater; while this entire movie isn't one long shot, the oners that are on display are some of the best ever. The bear attack is all done in a long take (that entire scene is brutal and beautifully done), as is the initial ambush, with the camera tracking from one person to the next as they dodge arrows, fend off enemies, battle on horseback (!), and finally make their escape. I have absolutely no clue how they managed to pull off these camera moves, but the result is tremendous. And those are just two examples — there are seemingly dozens in this movie. We've seen a bunch of astounding oners over the past few years (the first season of True Detective, Creed, Gravity, etc.), but these are next level.

Inarritu seems like a filmmaker who's very much up his own ass, so I was expecting half of this movie to consist of dream sequences and overbearing, obnoxious symbolism. There is some of that in here, and your mileage may vary on how these moments are handled. I can see how some might be bothered by them because the movie slingshots from being incredibly intense to deeply introspective, often without DiCaprio delivering any dialogue. But because they made up a drastically smaller percentage of the film than I expected going in, they mostly worked for me.

DiCaprio is extraordinary as Glass, imbuing this man with ferocity and determination and putting everything he has into this role. You can sense him going for broke here as Glass spews spittle while incapacitated, desperately trying to stay alive, and this may be the movie that wins him the Best Actor Oscar he's been chasing for years. The movie itself is an interesting metaphor for Leo's Oscar quest: beaten down by multiple losses over the years, he steadfastly refuses to give up and digs his way back with a relentless pursuit of greatness. Hardy adopts another strange vocal affection, but otherwise he's a great foil, an intense villain with just enough of a backstory to see where he's coming from.

There's a lot to dig into with this film, and I may end up writing more about it later on. But in the meantime I'll leave you with this: The Revenant is Inarritu's best movie, a heart-pounding, uncompromising vision that won't be soon forgotten.

Awesomely Stylized Movie Posters For PULP FICTION, INDIANA JONES, and More

These posters from Italy-based design company Van Orton Designs are visually striking representations of some classic films. These are all part of the "One Point Perspective Collection," and though they don't have the names of the films emblazoned anywhere on them, most of them are easily identifiable for film buffs. The Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade poster is my favorite, largely because I don't regularly see very much art dedicated to that specific film (which is a personal favorite of mine).

CREED Director Ryan Coogler in Talks To Direct Marvel's BLACK PANTHER

$

We'd heard whispers of this before, but now Birth.Movies.Death is confirming it: Creed director Ryan Coogler is actually in talks to direct Marvel's Black Panther solo film.

If you've seen Creed, you know this is terrific news. Coogler is a young filmmaker, but he's the real deal, transitioning from the gut-wrenching and acclaimed indie drama Fruitvale Station to the crowd-pleasing mid-budget spin-off Creed without missing a beat. He's exactly the kind of director Marvel likes to go after — someone who isn't a huge name, but has some proven success under their belts. At one point, F. Gary Gray was rumored for this job, and I think Coogler is a much better choice. Here's hoping the deal pans out and we hear an official confirmation in the coming days. I'm not sure what taking this movie would mean for a future Creed sequel, but hopefully Coogler remains involved and they can wait a couple of years for him to knock out a superhero movie before he returns to the ring.

Chadwick Boseman, who will first make his debut as the King of Wakanda in Captain America: Civil War, stars in Black Panther, which already has a February 16th, 2018 release date.

10 Hidden Cameos in Big Movies That You May Have Missed

$

It's always fun to spot surprise cameos in films that you weren't expecting to see. Of course not everyone will be able to pick out every cameo. Thankfully, Screen Rant is here to point out ten hidden cameos in films that you may have never noticed before. A lot of cameos pointed out in this video I've never noticed before! Some of the cameos pointed out include Jimmy Buffett in Jurassic World, Bryan Singer in Star Trek: Nemesis, Dan Aykroyd in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Peter Jackson in Hot Fuzz, Glenn Close in Hook, and more. I do have to say that pointing out Stan Lee in Mallrats and John Hurt in Spaceballs shouldn't be on this list because those are way too obvious.

No matter how much time is spent writing the perfect script, or assembling the perfect cast, a single celebrity appearance can wind up being the only thing audiences talk about. Whether it's adding to the story, delivering an unexpected gag, or just an incredible moment that fans might not even catch, the right cameo can take a movie from good to great. Here are Screen Rant's 10 Amazing Movie Cameos You've Never Seen.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Trailer Recut With Spider-Man

One of the things fans were really hoping to see in the Captain America: Civil War trailer was Spider-Man swinging his way around New York City. Well, Spider-Man was completely absent from it, so ComicBook.com went ahead and recut the trailer with some footage from the previous Spider-Man films.

I wonder if Marvel is going to keep Spider-Man completely under wraps until the movie is released, just like Lucasfilm is doing with Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If not, I think they should! Just keep Spider-Man out of all the promotion materials, and let it be a surprise to the audience.

I don’t think Marvel will do that, though. They kind of like to show off all the cool stuff in the movies that they make. While we wait for the new Spider-Man to show up somewhere, you can watch the recut Civil War trailer below.

Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters May 6th, 2016.

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE Holiday Trailer Introduces The Adorable Hatchlings

My kids are freakin’ flipping out over this Angry Birds movie. Judging from what I’ve seen so far, it looks like it could be a fun movie. At least I hope it is, because I’ll be forced to watch it! We’ve got a holiday trailer to share with you today that introduced audiences to some cute baby characters who are called the Hatchlings. In the trailer they attempt to sing “Deck the Halls” to help get us all in the Christmas spirit. It's adorable as hell. Check out the video below!

The Angry Birds Movie has a great voice cast that includes Jason Sudeikis as Red, a bird with a temper, with Josh Gad as the speedy Chuck, and Danny McBride voicing the volatile Bomb. The movie also features the voices of Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Hale, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Buress, and Jillian Bell.

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We're the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

The film will give fans the reason why the birds are so angry at the little green pigs. It crashes into theaters on May 20th, 2016.
