Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans Bringing Big CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Surprise To Tonight's JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE

$

0

Last night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live was notable for all of the Star Wars craziness that went down, but tonight, Marvel Studios wants to put the attention back on them. Today, Kimmel tweeted that Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans will appear on the show with a "BIG" surprise from the studio's next film, Captain America: Civil War:

So what could that "BIG" surprise be? A trailer, perhaps? The film's first trailer was reportedly supposed to appear in front of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made sense to us because Disney owns both Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm. But Disney also owns ABC, the network on which Kimmel's show airs, so if they were to drop a trailer there, it would still make sense for their corporate synergy.

Either way, it's probably worth tuning in to see what all the fuss is about. Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs at 11:35pm EST.

Kevin Bacon Will Reprise His TREMORS Role in New TV Series

Kevin Bacon has mentioned a few times recently that he'd be interested in reprising his role in Tremors in some capacity, and considering the relatively recent trend of turning movies into TV shows, it's not too surprising to read EW's report that says Bacon will be doing just that.

According to the report, Universal Cable Television and Blumhouse Productions have hired The Secret Circle writer Andrew Miller to write the script. Now that his Fox series The Following has been cancelled, Bacon will reprise his role as Valentine McKee from the original movie and executive produce the new show. They're currently shopping the idea around to various networks, but there's no word yet on where it might land.

There have been five total films in the Tremors franchise so far (most of them direct-to-video), but Bacon only appeared in the first and only theatrical entry, which hit theaters twenty-five years ago in 1990. Earlier this year, Bacon told IGN:

“I’d love to do something else with Tremors and revisit the character 25 years later. Part of what’s great about that movie is there are next to no digital effects. The monsters are done with puppetry, and it’s still off, funny and scary — it’s a cool accomplishment.”

The new show will return to the Nevada town of Perfection, where the first movie took place. No word yet if co-star Fred Ward will also return to reprise his role of fellow handyman Earl Basset.

James Gunn Debunks Today's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Rumor

Earlier today, we wrote about a rumor that supposedly revealed who Star-Lord's father is in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I largely like to avoid spoilers wherever possible, and I didn't even want to read that story at all, but because I had to edit it, I ended up having to read all about it. But writer/director James Gunn took to Facebook to say that this rumor is bogus:

All right. From this moment on I’m going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,...

Posted by James Gunn on Tuesday, November 24, 2015

In case the embed doesn't work on your device, here's the full text of his statement:

All right. From this moment on I’m going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, because, eventually, someone is going to come up with a spoiler that has some truth to it. That said, the rumors surrounding Quill’s parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren’t even close to the truth. I don’t know how people come up with this stuff, but it certainly isn’t through legitimate sources.
Also, I get the desire to get “scoops” on character inclusion and casting choices, etc. But since when is a plot spoiler a “scoop”? Is this really what fandom wants to know? Plot details in movies ahead of time? I got in this business because I love movies, and I think most film journalists are the same way. And spoiling plot details doesn’t add to the enjoyment of the film-going experience. So bravo to those folks out there who don’t partake in this sort of thing.
But, as I said, eventually someone will actually spoil some detail of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. So this will be my last comment squelching a rumor until May 2017. But if you do pick up on some plot detail between now and then, be aware, A) They are likely full of shit, as has been everyone so far who has claimed to have had inside info, and B) We’re creating a film that doesn’t rely on plot twists to be an enjoyable experience. They’re only a very small part of what we’re cooking up for you.
James

A couple of things here. First, I'm sure there are lots of you who are saying, "OF COURSE this is what he'd say after that kind of information leaked, just to throw everyone off the trail!" You may be right, but we won't know for sure until May of 2017. Secondly, I'm right there with him when it comes to spoiling plot details, but that's just my personal preference as a film fan who loves to read about movies just as much as writing about them.

This is where you come in. I'd love to hear where you all stand on what kind of things are worth covering on GeekTyrant. Do you love reading about every single possible plot detail beforehand, or do you prefer hearing about casting stuff and then tune the rest of it out? Do you fall somewhere in the middle? I want to read your comments and try to get a sense of what our community wants to know about, and while I won't make any promises about changing the direction of the site, I think this is valuable information for myself and the other writers to have when we're choosing the articles we write about. Feel free to head on down to the comments and let us know what you think.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5th, 2017.

Producer Charles Roven on James Wan Directing AQUAMAN and Script Update

$

The most exciting thing to happen with the standalone Aquaman movie in development is the hiring of James Wan to direct it. I’m not really excited about this movie, but I hope that it ends up being great! Maybe I’ll be a little more excited after I see Jason Momoa in action as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Of course, there’s also always the chance that I’ll just roll my eyes at it.

I’m such a big fan of Wan’s films, though, and it’s hard to imagine that he’ll disappoint. In an interview with Collider, producer Charles Roven gave an update on the film's script and also talked about bringing in Wan to helm the film:

"That’s a perfect example—him and [David] Ayer, and Patty [Jenkins], they’re perfect examples of what I’m talking about, to bring people in. Fertile creative minds who can say, ‘Okay, we get the road map, now let’s talk about doing this or doing that.’ It’s fun to have that flexibility and yet commonality."

He went on to talk about where the development process is going with Wan currently directing The Conjuring 2:

"We’re very early days. We’re just starting with the screenplay. He’s making The Conjuring 2 now, so he’s had his hand in the creation of let’s just call it a working document from which to write. But he’s directing that film [and] he’s got his hand ever so slightly in the development, but he’s really gonna throw himself into it after he finishes shooting Conjuring 2. And we’re planning on it being his film after Conjuring 2. He is a serious Aquaman fan."

Aquaman is a long way off. it won’t even come out until July 27th, 2018, so there’s plenty of time to get this production in top-notch shape before it hits theaters.

Google Invites You To Choose Between the Light or Dark Side

The Force seems to be awakening everywhere as the Star Wars hype keeps growing. This time around, Google pays tribute to the epic series and invites all fans of the saga to show their allegiance and choose a side. Ahead of the premiere of the seventh movie, the search giant gives fans a Star Wars themed portal which not only asks for you to choose either the Light or the Dark Side but it also transforms your experience when using Google applications.

As soon as the Google extension makes its changes, users are enabled to encounter a whole new Star Wars world which reflects the selected side. You get to see X-Wings and TIE fighters while roaming around Google Maps. Gmail gets a new look too, but before the page is loaded, you can watch the loading bar becoming a loading lightsaber instead.

Other apps and services which incorporate the Force include Android Wear, YouTube, Waze, Google Translate, Google Calendar, Google Search, Chromecast, and YouTube.

There are several Easter Eggs hidden in the search tool as well. Go ahead and type out “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” in the search bar, press enter, and see what happens. The rest is history…

John Carpenter Developing 4 TV Series That Will Push the Boundaries of Horror

If you're a fan of the films of John Carpenter, you’ll be happy to hear that the filmmaker will be making a serious move into the TV arena. The news comes Carpenter’s wife, Sandy King Carpenter, who recently was a guest on the horror podcast Killer POV.

During the interview, she says that there are four series already ready to go. She provides the following information:

“Right now, there’s four series waiting to go to network. As far as I’m concerned, we’ll do all of them. I mean, they’re great, and they’re different from anything that’s out there, and they again push the boundaries of what’s horror. [John] would be directing pilots and we would be executive producing them. There’s sci-fi, there’s horror, there’s one that I guess would be [a] sci fi-horror futuristic kind of thing. They’re all across the board. I think they’ll fulfill what people expect out of him by also being unpredictable.”

There’s no information on what these series will entail or what networks are looking at them, but it certainly sounds exciting! I’m a big fan of Carpenter’s earlier work, and it would be great to see what he is planning for TV. Hopefully, at least one or two of them see the light of day.

How STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES Should Have Ended

$

We've got a funny new animated video from the How It Should Have Ended team, and this one takes one George Lucas' classically bad Star Wars prequel, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. They give the film a new outcome that takes out many poor decisions that were made by characters, and it also changes up who lives, who dies, and why. Here's the note that came along with the video:

There were far too many scenes to cover in Star Wars Attack of the Clones. Like why doesn't anyone follow the money trail when the clone army is discovered being ordered by a long dead jedi? Why don't the Cloners Aliens ever call to confirm someone will come get their giant army after waiting 10 years to grow them? Why does everyone just let Dooku walk around? Why does OB-1 not mention that Dooku says the senate is being manipulated by the Dark Lord of the Sith? Why not make that public? The HISHE would be over 30 minutes long and we might have collapsed trying to build all of those scenes. So we hope you enjoy the scenes we chose. It was a very fun episode to work on.

The video turned out great, and I included all of the other animated Star Wars videos that HISHE has made below just in case you missed them.

There’s a FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Stage Musical Coming in 2016

Friday Night Lights is one of my favorite TV dramas ever, and I’ve been hoping that we’d get a movie made. I seriously doubt that’s ever going to happen at this point. You know what is happening, though!? The Unauthorized Friday Night Lights Musical!

This is a stage musical that is being created by writers Jordan Ross and Lindsey Rosin, who also created The Unauthorized Musical Parody Of Cruel Intentions and The Unauthorized O.C. Musical

They made the announcement on Twitter saying that it will be coming to Los Angeles in 2016. This will be a one-night affair and Scott Porter, who played Jason Street in the TV series, will be playing Coach Taylor in the musical, which I have to admit is pretty damn awesome.

I think I’ll actually make an effort to get tickets to this thing! It sounds like it will be fun.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Trailer Easter Eggs, References, and Screenshots

That Captain America: Civil War trailer was insanely exciting, and I can't wait to see how this intense story arc plays out. It's crazy actually seeing our favorite superheroes fighting each other. That last clip in the trailer of Captain America and Winter Soldier teaming up to beat the shit out of Iron Man made me so conflicted, but I loved it! I guess Tony Stark deserves it for being such a dick. I've always loved Stark, but this film is going to paint him in a different light. It's like he fully embraces his assholishness. This isn't the amusing sarcastic Stark that we've seen in the past. He's dead serious about his job. I'm sure this is just a little glitch in the Avengers' relationship, and they'll all eventually be friends again... right!?

While we wait to see what happens, we've got a video from Mr. Sunday Movies for you to watch that points out six Easter eggs and references that you may have missed in the trailer. I've also included a collection of screen shots showing the heroes in action, including Black Panther. Unfortunately, there's no sign of Spider-Man, which was my one disappointment about this trailer.

James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) has read the script for Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange, and during a live broadcast Q&A on Facebook he was asked what he thought about the movie. He seemed pretty excited about what Derrickson and Marvel are doing with the film, which recently started production. This is what he said:

"I like Doctor Strange, but I'm really excited about the new script. I like the script a lot so I'm very excited about the movie and I think Scott Derrickson is going to do something very unique visually. In the same way that Guardians came in and was a unique visual take on the Marvel Universe that was very different from the stuff that came before it, I think Doctor Strange is going to be the same way. So I'm so, so excited for what it's doing for the Marvel Universe."

I'm excited to see how this movie will turn out. Doctor Strange is one of my favorite Marvel characters, and it's encouraging to hear that Gunn likes what Derrickson is doing with it. The movie is set to be released on November 4th, 2016. To get caught up on all of our previous Doctor Strange news, click here.

Discover The History of Santa's Evil Companion KRAMPUS in New Featurette

$

0

Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures have released a new featurette that explains the history of the title character of Krampus, their new Christmas-themed horror movie written and directed by Michael Dougherty. He's the man responsible for my favorite Halloween movie, Trick 'r Treat, and it looks like he's going to bring the same kind of humor, horror, and holiday vibe to this movie. Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen, Krista Stadler, and Emjay Anthony star, and the film opens in theaters on December 4th. Watch the full trailer here if you haven't seen it yet.

Legendary Pictures’ Krampus, a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday.
When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas.  Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.
All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.
Krampus and his mischievous underlings have been created by the combined efforts of Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, both renowned for their epic work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and King Kong, among many others.
Written and directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ’r Treat), Krampus is co-written by Zach Shields and Todd Casey and produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, Alex Garcia and Dougherty.

Ryan Gosling May Play Astronaut Neil Armstrong in Biopic For WHIPLASH Director

$

After he broke out with Whiplash last year, director Damien Chazelle became attached to direct a biopic of astronaut Neil Armstrong called First Man. The project has been around for a long time, bouncing around to different filmmakers, but it's looking like Chazelle might be the one to ultimately bring the story to the big screen. Deadline reports that he may have found a male lead, though it's still too early to confirm for certain.

Chazelle is currently making his Whiplash follow-up, a L.A.-based musical called La La Land, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and if this report is to be believed, he's eyeing Gosling to play Armstrong in the new movie. This sounds like an interesting collaboration, and I'm very excited to see how these two work together in La La Land and beyond.

First Man is still being written by Spotlight co-writer Josh Singer, so no deal has gone through yet because the script isn't finished. James Hansen's biography First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong provides the basis for this movie, and the book traces Armstrong's history as a combat pilot, test pilot, and eventually the first man to walk on the moon. Gosling seems like he'd be a good fit for the part, and if you're anything like me, you don't know a damn thing about Neil Armstrong other than what his voice sounds like when he says "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Let's see if Chazelle and Gosling can change that.

Hayao Miyazaki Needs to Direct a LEGEND OF ZELDA Anime Film!

Imagine this: a big screen anime adaption of The Legend of Zelda directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Amazing, right!? It makes complete sense! It's highly unlikely that it will ever happen because Miyazaki is retired, but I saw these incredible fan made posters created by Matt Vince and it makes me wonder why in the hell this never happened!

A Legend of Zelda film created by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli would have seriously been one of the greatest things ever. Why didn't Nintendo and Studio Ghibli ever collaborate on this!? It's infuriating to think about what could have been and it makes me sad that it's something we'll never see. Maybe one day it could happen...if you believe in miracles. You might find my lack of faith disturbing, but this is just one of those things that is too good to ever be true.

Watch: Spellbinding Full Trailer For THE LITTLE PRINCE

$

0

I've somehow never even heard of The Little Prince before, but this new trailer for Paramount Pictures' upcoming film adaptation makes me want to read the book immediately. It looks like an enchanting, magical story that could easily end up being one of the best films of the year. The blending of animation styles looks wonderful, and it appears to have all of the heart and emotion normally only found in Pixar movies. If I had to guess right now based only on what I've seen so far, I'd say I'm going to like this film better than Pixar's 2016 movie Finding Dory.

And check out this awesome voice cast: Riley Osborne as the Prince, Marion Cotillard as The Rose, Rachel McAdams as The Mother, James Franco as The Fox, Jeff Bridges as The Aviator, Benicio del Toro as The Snake, Ricky Gervais as The Conceited Man, Paul Giamatti as The Teacher, Albert Brooks as Businessman, Bud Cort as The King, and Mackenzie Foy as The Little Girl. I'm very, very excited to see how this turns out.

The Little Prince apparently already opened in France this summer, but it will hit U.S. theaters on March 18th, 2016.

At the heart of it all is The Little Girl, who’s being prepared by her mother for the very grown–up world in which they live — only to be interrupted by her eccentric, kind–hearted neighbor, The Aviator. The Aviator introduces his new friend to an extraordinary world where anything is possible. A world that he himself was initiated into long ago by The Little Prince. It’s here that The Little Girl’s magical and emotional journey into her own imagination — and into the universe of The Little Prince — begins. And it’s where The Little Girl rediscovers her childhood and learns that ultimately, it’s human connections that matter most, and that what’s truly essential can only be seen with the heart.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT Featurette is a Must-Watch For Hardcore Film Nerds

Any new movie by Quentin Tarantino is a big deal, but his new western The Hateful Eight looks to be one of the biggest events of the year. You may have heard about how the Oscar-winning writer/director plans to unveil the movie in a roadshow format on Christmas Day, and now The Weinstein Company has released a featurette that includes star Samuel L. Jackson explaining the history of the roadshow, as well as interviews with Tarantino, cinematographer Bob Richardson, and some of the cast talking about the 70mm lenses they were able to use from Panavision. This is absolutely must-watch material for any serious film nerd out there.

And one of the coolest things the featurette doesn't mention? The roadshow version of the movie will feature an additional 12 minutes that won't be seen in traditional theaters. I'd highly recommend carving some time out of your Christmas celebration to seek this film out in this format — it looks incredible.

Character Posters For New SHERLOCK Episode "The Abominable Bride"

It's rare we get a full set of character posters for TV shows, but Sherlock is a special case. It's been almost two years since the season (or "series," as UK residents call them) three finale of the BBC mystery show, and we don't have to wait much longer until we see the new adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman): The Abominable Bride arrives in both the U.S. and the U.K. on January 1st, 2016, and you can even see it in theaters if you wait until January 5th or 6th. Check out an extended trailer here.

Gamesradar points us to these text-less character posters that feature Cumberbatch, Freeman, Amanda Abbington as Mary Morstan (technically "Mary Watson"), Una Stubbs as landlady Mrs. Hudson, and the mysterious Abominable Bride herself. We're so desperate for Sherlock content after such a long wait between episodes, we'll take just about anything we can get at this point. Take a look at the images below:

Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, and Ron Howard Turned Down Directing THE PHANTOM MENACE

$

Here's a cool piece of movie trivia for you to share around your Thanksgiving tables: even though George Lucas ended up directing all three of the Star Wars prequels, he initially went to three of Hollywood's biggest directors and asked them to direct The Phantom Menace, but all three turned him down.

To promote his new film In the Heart of The Sea, director Ron Howard went on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and around the 31:00 minute mark, revealed that he, Robert Zemeckis, and Steven Spielberg all rejected Lucas's offer:

"[Lucas] didn't necessarily want to direct [the prequels]. He told me that he had talked to Zemeckis, he talked to me, he talked to Steven Spielberg, and I was the third one he spoke to, and we all said the same thing: 'George, you should just do it.' Nobody wanted to follow that act, I don't think, at that point. That was an honor, but it would have been just too daunting."

I wonder if this is just Howard being diplomatic, or if what he really means is that the script for The Phantom Menace was garbage and that's the real reason these guys wanted to stay so far away from it. But even if that's not the case, can you imagine if Lucas handed you that script and asked you to direct it? With the way he eventually went on to pioneer a lot of green screen techniques on that film, "daunting" is probably a pretty apt way to describe the feeling of making that project.

Later in the interview, he spoke about the reason he hasn't made a superhero movie before:

I’ve had opportunities over the years [to make superhero movies]. I really feel like you shouldn’t make a movie as a kind of exercise. You have to be all the way in. I was never a comic book guy. I like the movies when I see them, especially the origin stories. I never felt like I could be on the set, at 3 o’clock in the morning, tired, with 10 important decisions to make, and know, intuitively, what the story needs. For me, I’d be copycatting and not inventing. I’ve never said yes to one.

That's a level of self-awareness that I feel is sort of rare these days. Most people in Hollywood seem to operate with the "fake it 'til you make it" mentality, but Howard hasn't built the career he's had by diving into things ill-prepared.
