Another day, another fifteen Star Wars: The Force Awakens posts! We've got a new TV spot for you to watch titled "First Order," and it gives us one new shot of the First Order army ready for battle and saluting their leaders. I love the huge scale of the First Order army. It's pretty incredible to see how this evil force has grown over the last 30 years. I also have a new photo from Empire that offers us a new look at Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma. I'm so fascinated by this character because we know so little about her. You can enjoy the new spot below.

Empire Magazine has released six covers cool covers for their upcoming issue, and in case you were hoping to see Luke Skywalker among them...you're out of luck. These covers feature new images of Rey (Daisy Ridley), BB-8, Finn (John Boyega), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewie (Peter Mayhew), and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver NOT Mark Hamill!). I can't believe people still actually believe that Luke Skywalker is Kylo Ren.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to be released on December 18th, 2015. It seems like we'll be getting some new information of the film with the upcoming release of this issue of Empire.

Chris Hemsworth Says THOR: RAGNAROK Should Have GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY-Style Humor

Chris Hemsworth is currently out promoting his new film project In The Heart of the Sea, which looks like it could be incredible. During an interview with CinemaBlend, the actor briefly discussed what he would like to see in the upcoming third Thor solo film, Thor: Ragnarok

We already know that Mark Ruffalo's Hulk will be a part of the story, and that means there could be room for some fun humor between Thor and the giant green goliath. More humor is something that Hemsworth wants to see in the film, In fact, he would like to see some of that Guardians of the Galaxy-style humor!

"I think [Thor 3] needs to be injected with that sort of smart wit and unexpected kind of humor, kind of what James Gunn came in and did with Guardians [Of The Galaxy]. It was like off center and unpredictable, and I think we can definitely use a dose of that, you know?"

There been some great humor interjected into these Thor films already, but I understand what he's trying to say. With Taika Waititi set to direct the film, I think we'll see one of the most humorous Thor films that's been made yet. At the same time, it could also be the darkest because the subject matter and intensity of the story. It was previously reported that one of the reasons Waititi was hired to direct the film was to help bring it more humor. Hemsworth goes on to talk about what the director will bring to the film:

"I feel we had less of the sort of the naivety or fun or humor that the first [Thor] might have had. I wish we had more of that in the second [movie] … We’ve done regal. We’ve done Shakespeare, and we’ve shown that. I think now it’s time to go, 'Ok, cool. Let’s try something different,' and Taika just had such a brilliant sort of take and funny kind of ideas about where we could [go], how we could do that."

What do you think about seeing a more comedic undertone in Thor: Ragnarok? If it fits the context of the story and is tactfully worked into it, I don't see why not. I can see a lot of fun, amusing banter between Thor and Bruce Banner/Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok is set to be released on July 28th, 2017. For more information on the movie, you can check out all of our related posts here.

Arcade Champ Billy Mitchell Tries To Sue REGULAR SHOW Over Depiction, Hilariously Fails

$

To this day, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters remains one of my favorite geek-focused documentaries. It's a journey through a very niche and exclusive world of coin operated arcade competition. Grown men compete for all-time records on games ancient by today's standards, and get super salty and obsessive when their records are broken. Featured prominently throughout the film is Billy Mitchell, who once held both the record for high scores in Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Mitchell has long protested the film's depiction of him, which makes him seem petty, paranoid, and conniving...and while that may or may not be true, this new expose by Gawker may not help his case.

Mitchell recently had a case thrown out by a judge after the gaming champ attempted to sue the Cartoon Network program Regular Show over its depiction of him, which can be seen below.

While the whole episode literally plays out like a caricature of the actual documentary, federal judges say it's all protected under first amendment. They also add:

“The television character does not match the plaintiff in appearance: GBF appears as a non-human creature, a giant floating head with no body from outer space, while Plaintiff is a human being,” Thompson wrote in her decision.

“And when GBF loses his title, the character literally explodes, unlike Plaintiff.”

All that being said, I've also seen people say nice things about Billy Mitchell, so take that for what it's worth. Does a petty person sue a cartoon? You tell me.

Gorifically Funny Thanksgiving Horror Comedy Short - INVADERS

If you're looking to be entertained for the next five minutes, you need to watch this hilarious blood-filled horror comedy called Invaders. The story takes place on Thanksgiving night and it follows two men as they attempt to invade a home and murder a family with axes. Things don't quite turn out the way that they hoped.

The short film was directed by Jason Kupfer, and he and his team did a fantastic job bringing this amusing story to life for us to enjoy. This thing had me busting up with laughter.

Invaders is a dark-comedy/horror spin on home invasion films. It takes place on Thanksgiving night, which is why we're releasing it next week. It's kind of our awkward Thanksgiving gift to the internet.

The short has screened at several film festivals over the years including Fantastic Fest, Slamdance, and FilmQuest. A huge thanks to the director for sending this in to us — it was a real treat! I hope you all enjoy it!

Paramount Wants Martin Scorsese To Direct An Evel Knievel Biopic

$

A biopic about legendary stuntman Evel Knievel, the American daredevil who became famous for his epic motorcycle jumps throughout the '70s and '80s, is already being eyed by Sony Pictures with Channing Tatum in talks to play Knievel. Last we heard, Darren Aronofsky was in talks to direct that movie, and now Hollywood is doing that thing they often do in which two movies that cover extremely similar subject matter are put in development at the same time: Deadline reports that Paramount wants its own biopic, and they'd like Martin Scorsese to direct it.

William Monahan has been hired to write the screenplay, which will be based on Sheldon Saltman's book Evel Knievel On Tour, which — get this — due to its unflattering depiction of Knievel, infuriated the stuntman so much that he assaulted the author with a baseball bat, breaking the author's arm in the process. (His sponsorships bailed on him after that, leading him to eventually file for bankruptcy and spend some time in jail for the assault.) Boardwalk Empire showrunner Terence Winter is producing, and the hope is to lure Scorsese in to collaborate with these guys again (Monahan wrote The Departed, while Winter wrote The Wolf of Wall Street and is teaming with Scorsese for Vinyl after their successful run on Boardwalk).

Scorsese has a great relationship with Paramount, having worked with the studio on every film release of his since 2008's Shine a Light. Word is that it's still too early for the director to make a decision about directing this one, but the lure of working with familiar collaborators at his home studio may be too good to pass up. The next Scorsese film we'll see is the Liam Neeson-starrer Silence, but his next project is still up in the air. We'll keep you posted if he decides to jump on board.

RUMOR: The Identity of Peter Quill's Father Revealed in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

If you DO NOT want to know who Peter Quill's father is in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, then why the hell did you click on the link to read this!?

The following information comes from Heroic Hollywood, who gets their scoops from top-notch sources that are usually right. This particular intel was confirmed by four of their sources, so there a good chance this rumor could actually be a huge SPOILER.

So are you ready for this?

Really?

You're still reading?

You better not get pissed at me after all these spoiler warnings!

Peter Quill's dad is...CAPTAIN MARVEL!

I know you're like "Wait! What!?" But hold on to your butts.

James Gunn has already denied Captain Marvel will be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but Gunn is talking about Carol Danvers. Heroic Hollywood is talking about a different version of the character. That version is the Silver Age comic version of Captain Marvel a.k.a Mar-Vell, who was introduced in 1967 in Marvel Super-Heroes #12.

He is a Kree super-soldier sent to examine Earth's missile and advanced technologies programs to evaluate us and the possible threat we are to the Kree empire. For more information, you can watch the video that the site released.

This is the role that Matthew McConaughey may have passed on. Marvel is expected to deny the shit out of this, but the site is very confident that they are right on the money. Until we have official confirmation, we will consider this news a rumor.

It this is true, it's a pretty damn fascinating plot point and character to introduce into the MCU. Regardless of whether it's true or not, I'm still crazy excited to see how the story arc plays out for Quill and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters.

What do you all think about the idea of Mar-Vell being Star-Lord's pops?

Here's Why Marvel Has Been Purposefully Withholding IRON FIST News

$
0
0

When Marvel and Netflix failed to announce, well, just about anything about Iron Fist, the fourth show in its lineup that began with Daredevil and leads up to the superhero team-up mini-series The Defenders, the internet began to wonder about the show's prospects. Reports started showing up about how the company didn't know what to do with the character, and then how they were reportedly going to turn Iron Fist into a movie and give Jon Bernthal's Punisher his own spin-off show to take Iron Fist's place on the roster. While we still aren't 100% sure whether those were legitimate conversations happening within Marvel's TV department, the company is now saying that the reason we haven't heard anything about Iron Fist is simple: they wanted to launch Jessica Jones without distracting from it.

Comic Book Resources spoke with Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel TV, and he revealed the reasoning for the lack of updates:

"One of the things we wanted to be able to do was make sure that “Jessica” – which was a property that a lot of people did not know, and really, hats off to the people at Netflix who came up with the ad campaign, which is a sign that the world learned her name … Every time you start any property, whether it’s in comics or in movies or in television or in animation, everyone’s always looking for, “Tell us a little something about the next one, so we can get the jump on that story.”
There was a lot of speculation about what was going on with “Iron Fist,” because [fans] hadn’t heard anything about it, but there’s never been any change at all. We knew exactly what we were doing at Marvel and at Netflix. Let’s get “Jess” out there, everybody knows that “Luke Cage” is up and going. What I can say right now is, we’re very excited about “Iron Fist,” and the short answer is, yes there’ll be news."

That seems like an awfully convenient response, but to be fair, Daredevil definitely had more name recognition than Jessica Jones because of the Ben Affleck movie, so maybe that's why we heard so much about those other shows while Daredevil was getting off the ground. Or, maybe they still don't know how to handle Iron Fist, and they're desperately stalling as they try to get their sh*t together. I suppose we'll find out soon enough. BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT Trailer Features Ice Cube, Nicki Minaj, and More

Never underestimate Ice Cube. He's turned four movies — Friday, Barbershop, Are We There Yet?, and Ride Along — into multi-film franchises, and now he's back with a third movie set in the Barbershop universe (actually, it's technically the fourth: Queen Latifah's Beauty Shop was a spin-off set in Atlanta). This time, the movie seems to take on the notion of the violence in Chicago head-on, while also combining the male-dominated barbershop with the female-centric salon to form a central hub for the community's characters to interact.

Starring Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Regina Hall, Common, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve, Anthony Anderson, Deon Cole, Jaszmine Lewis, JB Smoove, and Nicki MinajBarbershop: The Next Cut arrives in theaters on April 15th, 2016.

It’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop.  Calvin (Ice Cube) and his longtime crew, including Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), are still there, but the shop has undergone some major changes.  Most noticeably, our once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed.  The ladies bring their own flavor, drama and gossip to the shop challenging the fellas at every turn.  Despite the good times and camaraderie within the shop, the surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse, forcing Calvin and our crew to come together to not only save the shop, but their neighborhood.

Carrie Fisher Talks About Her Experience Playing Princess Leia Over The Years

It seems that no matter where you look, you are going to find something linked to Star Wars. I don’t mind — I am a huge Star Wars fan. As a fanboy, I always dreamed that it would be amazingly fun to be a cast member of any of the movies. It's always interesting to hear behind the scenes stories from the cast.

Recently, Time.com was able to sit down and speak with original cast member (and The Force Awakens star) Carrie Fisher. They covered her experience of playing Princess Leia both 32 years ago and today. Here are some excerpts from the Q&A:

Was it a difficult decision to come back and do this movie?
"No, I’m a female and in Hollywood it’s difficult to get work after 30—maybe it’s getting to be 40 now. I long ago accepted that I am Princess Leia. I have that as a large part of the association with my identity. There wasn’t a lot of hesitation."
Had Leia changed over the years?
"Oh my God, she got so much older. I tried to stop her, but apparently that includes death so that didn’t seem like a good solution. Along with aging comes life experience so in every way that is consistent with even being human, Leia has changed."
Do you bring aspects as an actress to this that you didn’t when you first played her?
"Probably, but I try not to. I mean, one hopes that I at least indicate that I have wisdom. Whether I’m successful with that indication or not remains to be seen. And I wear less makeup and I need it more."
You wear less makeup in this film? Was that the director’s decision or yours?
"No, it’s me. I’ve seen pictures of myself with makeup on and I look like those women who look like they’re wearing makeup so they can look young, and I don’t think that’s good. They have all these products now called—wait, what’s it called, it’s my favorite—youth suppressant, or age go away, they don’t work. I didn’t wear a lot of makeup to begin with and I was always—you have to be very careful with that stuff. It really annoys me that I’m vain, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to discard that tendency."

It’s an interesting perspective on the making of a Star Wars experience. I honestly thought it was an "all fun, games, and rainbows" situation. I wasn’t expecting such an honest response to the questions. It is quite refreshing. For more about Fisher's experience as Leia, read the full interview at Time.

Marvel's LUKE CAGE Adds New Cast Member

Marvel has announced that the company has hired Brazilian actress Sonia Braga to play Soledad Temple, the mother of Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple character, in their upcoming TV series Luke Cage.

Braga (the aunt of City of God and I Am Legend actress Alice Braga) has been acting since the late 1960s and broke out in the international hit Kiss of The Spider Woman before appearing on shows like Alias and Royal Pains.

“A character as strong as Claire needs an equally powerful mother, and with Sonia we found the perfect actress to deliver the stellar performance we needed,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “In ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage,’ fans will now get a chance to see where Claire got the fire we love her for.”

We first met Claire in Daredevil and saw her again in Jessica Jones, and we've known for a while that she'd be back opposite star Mike Colter in Luke Cage. But this will be the first time we see her mother on the small screen.

Cheo Hodari Coker, Luke Cage's executive producer and showrunner, said:

“Sonia Braga? Rosario Dawson? ‘Nuff said. I'm tuning in. When it came to finding someone who was both formidable yet possessed a light touch, Sonia was the perfect choice and has been a Godsend.”

No release date has been revealed yet, but Coker will write the first two episodes of the show and we expect it will drop sometime in 2016. Here's a good breakdown of some of the other characters who will appear in the series, and you can read the official synopsis below:

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city—forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

Honest Trailer For FANTASTIC FOUR (2015)

Bad visual effects, lame acting, boring action beats...this is just a fraction of what I have to say about the 2015 version of Fantastic Four. And the trailer was just so cool…so cool! Even though producer Simon Kinberg desperately tried to defend the movie, I can definitely state that he failed to do so. And now they are getting what they deserve!

Screen Junkies just released an Honest Trailer for the brand new Fantastic Four reboot. The only difference between this one and the other two Fantastic Four movies is the multiplied amount of boredom and ridiculousness.

Behold the funny dissection of the movie, which stars “Were you stretching away or were you dragging,” “A Wasted House of Cards Actor,” “A Chocolate Snowman,” “Michael B. Glad You Don’t Have to Do Any More of These,” “Another Wasted House of Cards Actor,” and “Crash Test Doomy.”

DOCTOR STRANGE Officially Begins Filming, Major Cast Members Confirmed

$

Even though we've already seen footage of stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor on set, Disney just sent us a press release announcing the start of production on Marvel's Doctor Strange. They also confirm the major cast members, which include Cumberbatch, Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Michael Stuhlbarg along with Mads Mikkelsen and Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton. It's a mostly boilerplate release, but there are a few little things worth pointing out. First up, the official description of the movie:

“Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

And there's also a full list of the main behind-the-scenes talent involved with the movie:

Director Scott Derrickson’s creative team also includes director of photography Ben Davis, B.S.C. (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); production designer Charles Wood (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); costume designer Alexandra Byrne (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); editors Wyatt Smith (“Into the Woods,” Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World”) and Sabrina Plisco, ACE (“Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium,” “Charlotte’s Web”); and visuals effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti (Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”).

There's one film listed among all of those credits that appears more than any other: Guardians of the Galaxy. That's not an accident — Doctor Strange is set up to be the most bizarre movie yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and having the cinematographer, production designer, costume designer, and visual effects supervisor of James Gunn's beloved, off-kilter space epic says a lot about how Derrickson is going to push the boundaries of what we expect even further, and it hopefully bodes well for a movie that, at the very least, is spectacular on a visual level.

Doctor Strange opens on November 4th, 2016.

PistolShrimps has put together a supercut of Katniss Everdeen saying "Peeta" in The Hunger Games movies, but instead of Jennifer Lawrence talking to Josh Hutcherson, she's actually talking to a hand holding some pita bread. Tom Cruise In Talks To Lead THE MUMMY Reboot

$

0

A few years ago, Tom Cruise was attached to produce and star in a Van Helsing reboot from Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. That project ultimately ended up never happening, and while Kurtzman and Orci have since parted ways, Kurtzman is now one of the minds behind reimagining Universal's monster movies into a new connected cinematic universe. First up on that slate is a reboot of The Mummy, which Kurtzman is going to direct himself, and now, according to Variety, Tom Cruise is in talks to play the lead role in that film.

I guess Cruise really wants to work with Kurtzman on one of these monster movies. Cruise has been one of the biggest movie stars in the world for the past thirty years, and I'm a little shocked that he'd be interested in becoming a puzzle piece in a studio's big cinematic universe plan. Aside from The Color of Money, he's only starred in sequels of franchises he launched himself (Mission: Impossible, Jack Reacher), and he's one of the rare Hollywood players with enough star power to still get projects greenlit based on his involvement alone. It's honestly a little disheartening to see him jump into a project like this because I think he's much more of an interesting actor than that, and even though I obviously don't know the direction they're taking this Mummy reboot, I can't help but be disappointed that he's squandering the opportunity to make more films like Edge of Tomorrow instead.

Cruise was aiming to reunite with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman on a sci-fi movie called Luna Park, but now that Liman has taken the director's chair on Gambit, Cruise apparently has a hole in his schedule before he starts filming Mission: Impossible 6 that could be filled by this reboot.

Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) wrote the screenplay for The Mummy, which is set in the present day. Unfortunately, that's all we know about the film for sure. There was some talk a while back about how the newly-rejuvenated Universal Monster movies will lean more toward the action-adventure genre than horror, but then Kurtzman tried to clarify that they will still have horror elements to them. Last we heard, this movie might feature a female mummy.

What do you think about Cruise playing the lead in this film? The Mummy reboot is set for release on March 24th, 2017.
