Robert Rodriguez and John Malkovich Made A Film Literally No One Will See For 100 Years

In honor of the one hundred year aging process it uses for its cognac, luxury brand Louis XIII hired director Robert Rodriguez and actor John Malkovich to make a film called 100 Years that will be placed in a time capsule and opened on November 18th, 2115. According to Rodriguez, the story is "emotionally charged," but io9 reports that the company is keeping everything else secret.

Marko Zaror and Shuya Chang co-star. Take a look at a featurette below:

Louis XIII is sending metal movie tickets to 1,000 "influential people," asking them to pass the tickets down to their descendants who will be alive in 2115 so they can attend the premiere.

They've released three teasers for the project, but none of the footage you'll see in them will be found in the actual movie. Instead, these were just "created to show what it might look like when someone uncovers the film in 100 years." Take a look below, and let us know what you think about all of this in the comments:

It would have been such an amazing experience to be a part of any of the Star Wars films, even if it was just as an extra playing a Stormtrooper. There are a lucky few who been able to put on the Stormtrooper armor over the years. As you know, the Stormtroopers got a very cool new look for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and an army of extras were used to play these members of the First Order military. Thanks to Wired, we have a few photos of the dressing room where these people suited up and prepared for shooting. I'd love to take just one of those costumes home with me.

Liam Neeson Narrates First Teaser Trailer For A MONSTER CALLS

$

Liam Neeson's voice was put to good use in the Chronicles of Narnia movies, and now he's being called on for a different kind of film. Focus Features has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Juan Antonio Bayona's A Monster Calls, a dark, moody-looking film that reminds me a little of movies they used to make for kids when I was growing up, like The NeverEnding Story. It also has a hint of Roald Dahl to it, with dreary life being upended by magical forces that enter a child's world.

A Monster Calls arrives in theaters on October 14th, 2016, and stars Neeson, Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, and newcomer Lewis MacDougall.

A visually spectacular drama from acclaimed director Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Impossible”), based on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel. 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) attempts to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that explore courage, loss, and faith.

George Lucas Reveals Why He'll Never Make Another STAR WARS Movie

Is there a better embodiment of the complicated relationship between fans and the creator of the thing they're fans of than George Lucas? Even I find myself vacillating between extreme opinions of the man, cursing his name for the prequels one minute and then praising him for creating a wonderfully constructed cinematic universe the next. As much as his constant meddling with the original trilogy and refusal to release the real versions of those movies bugs me, I still have to come down on the side of being thankful for his vision.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the man responsible for the creation of Star Wars spoke up about the reasons he won't direct another movie in the series:

Watch this on The Scene.

In case you aren't able to watch the video for some reason, I'll reprint some of his quotes:

"You make a movie and all you do is get criticized,” Lucas said, “and it’s not much fun. You can’t experiment.
I'm curious [about The Force Awakens to see if] the Force doesn't get muddled into a bunch of garbledygook. I'm curious about what happened to Darth Vader's grandkids.

But here's the best quote of them all: when asked which Star Wars character he'd choose to be, he answers, "Jar Jar Binks." Touché, sir.

Joe Quesada Says Jon Bernthal's Punisher Will Blow Hardcore Fans Away

Fans are looking forward to seeing The Punisher in action when he's introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the second season of Daredevil. The character is being played by Jon Bernthal, and everything I've seen of him so far looks great. We have yet to see him actually act in the part, though.

While talking to IGN, Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada spoke a little bit about what’s in store for Frank Castle. It was previously rumored that in the process of trying to figure out what to do with Iron Fist, Marvel would give The Punisher a spin-off series first. We don't know if there's any truth to that, but Quesada says:

"I think we’d love to see something happen [with a Punisher series], but it’s way too soon to tell, and we don’t necessarily like to discuss which metrics we use to decide these things."

He goes on to say that hardcore fans of The Punisher are going to be blown away by how Bernthal portrays the character:

"But what I can tell you is anyone who is a hardcore Punisher fan is going to be blown away and incredibly satisfied by Bernthal’s take on Frank Castle. It’s one of those cases where it’s the character from the pages come to life.”

That's exciting to hear! It will be cool to finally be able to see him in action so we can form an opinion for ourselves. Quesada was also asked about the Iron Fist rumor, and this is all he said about it:

“Iron Fist is being worked on. That’s all that I can say."

So it's still up in the air whether or not Iron Fist will be developed as a series or a Netflix movie. As far as The Defenders go, and the superhero lineup that Marvel is planning for them, Quesada says:

“You have to understand, to the world at large, nobody knows who The Defenders are. So to take the concept, the name and the theme and apply it to this world feels wholly natural. Even when you look at the origins how the Defenders book came about, it was just another super hero team that wasn’t the Avengers. We have a wonderful concept behind why they’re this group and why they’re called The Defenders and why they would exist in this particular world.”

Everything that Marvel and Netflix are doing together is pretty exciting. It will be interesting to see if any of these characters ever make it to the big screen. What do you all think about Quesada's comments regarding The Punisher, Iron Fist, and The Defenders?

We all know who Katniss Everdeen is, and we also know who Hermione Granger is. But we can hardly imagine what will happen when the hot temper of Ms. Everdeen faces the intelligence of Ms. Granger. Two worlds, that of The Hunger Games and that of Harry Potter, clash in a battle deprived of any weapons and magic.

The video is part of the Princess Rap Battle series created by Whitney Avalon. In the clip, she plays Katniss, while Molly C. Quinn stars as Hermione.

See what happens when there are no bows, no arrows, no wands — only rapping.

James Franco Has To Save JFK in First Teaser Trailer For J.J. Abrams and Stephen King's 11.22.63

I haven't bought a subscription to Hulu because I've been busy trying to catch up on Netflix and HBO shows, but 11.22.63 may be the show that convinces me to finally pull the trigger. Executive produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and based on Stephen King's novel, the show stars James Franco as a modern English teacher who travels back in time and is tasked with preventing JFK's assassination.

This might prove to be an interesting companion piece with the other alternate history show available on streaming platforms, Amazon's The Man in the High Castle. I'm sure we'll be getting a more in-depth trailer soon, but in the meantime, let us know if this looks like something you're interested in.

Hulu Original series 11.22.63 is a thriller in which high school history teacher Jake Epping (James Franco) travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy - but his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, falling in love and the past itself, which doesn't want to be changed. Also starring Chris CooperJosh Duhamel, T.R. Knight, Cherry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Lucy Fry, George MacKay, and Daniel Webber.
The nine-hour limited event series based upon the New York Times best-selling 2011 novel written by Stephen King premieres Presidents Day, Feb. 15, 2016, on Hulu. J.J. Abrams, Stephen King, Bridget Carpenter and Bryan Burk serve as executive producers. Academy Award(R)-winning Director Kevin Macdonald (Last King of Scotland, State of Play, Black Sea) directs and executive produces the first two hours.

Mark Hamill Teases “Mind-Boggling Plot Twist” in THE FORCE AWAKENS

$

Don't worry! There are no spoilers here. Mark Hamill isn't allowed to say anything. He signed a non-disclosure agreement. However, he does tease that there's going a "mind-boggling plot twist" in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The actor is currently filming scenes for the video game Squadron 42 (Star Citizen), and during an interview with Games Radar, he revealed that he's sitting on a HUGE secret, which is probably the reason why Luke Skywalker has been left out of all the marketing material for the film. He explains:

"It's crazy. This NDA stuff - non-disclosure agreement. Where you're not allowed to talk about stuff. I have something coming out, where there's an amount of money where if it leaks because of me, I don't get that payment. If I keep it a secret until the day it comes out, I get that payment."

We all know he's talking about The Force Awakens. Hamill goes on to say that he's good at keeping secrets. Hell, I'd be good at keeping secrets too if there was money involved! He goes on to use the example of how he was able to keep Darth Vader being Luke's father a secret from his wife and co-star Harrison Ford. He says:

"The original line was, 'You don't know the truth, Obi Wan killed your father. And [Irvin Kershner] said we're going to take out that line and put, "I am your father."...It was a mind-boggling plot twist...Now it's happening all over again. I'm not even authorized to tell you that I'm in Episode VII."

So history is repeating itself. There was a mind-boggling plot twist in The Empire Strikes Back, and now there's going to be one in The Force Awakens. What could it be!? I've already shared one theory regarding Luke Skywalker in the film, but I have an even crazier one that I've been thinking about. What if Luke is dead when the story starts? What if Hamill is playing a Force ghost version of Luke? This is just a ridiculous theory that popped in my head recently and I thought I'd share it. Part of the reason behind that theory is a photo of Luke that leaked out a while ago that Disney asked us to remove from the site. If you saw it, you might know what I'm thinking. The other part is the insane level of secrecy. It really does have to be something mind-boggling.

Review: Will Smith's CONCUSSION Takes The NFL Down a Peg

$
0
0

Though it will rightfully garner some attention for Will Smith's impressive lead performance, Concussion is a largely flat procedural about the discovery of CTE, the disease caused by the sort of repeated head trauma regularly experienced by NFL players. It's clear writer/director Peter Landesman is passionate about the subject, but this poorly paced and meandering drama seems as if he set out to make a conspiracy thriller and forgot all about the "thriller" aspect. Not as revelatory as Michael Mann's The Insider, which pitted a different small-time David against a multi-billion dollar Goliath, Concussion covers a necessary and vital topic but never quite coalesces into the kind of Important Movie to which it aspires.

In 2002, Bennet Omalu (Will Smith), a doctor with a staggering number of medical degrees and an odd pre-autopsy habit of talking to cadavers as if they're still alive, performs an autopsy on former Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster (David Morse) and discovers some disturbing results. Webster, who spent the last years of his life confused, depressed, broke, and living in his truck, didn't lose his mind and die at age 50 as a fluke — after Omalu pays out of pocket for expensive tests on Webster's brain, he discovers the man had a disease caused by thousands of blows to the head. More former players die and Omalu discovers the same condition in them, eventually publishing the results in a medical journal and drawing the ire of the NFL, who are trying to keep this story quiet to better serve their own interests.

With the help of his wife Prema (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), former Steelers doctor Julian Bailes (Alec Baldwin), and his boss Dr. Cyril Wecht (Albert Brooks), Omalu spends most of the movie attempting to convince various people that his findings are scientifically accurate and that the NFL is trying to discredit him. There are a handful of moments where the movie really feels like it's found its groove (especially in scenes of commentators cracking up about players getting "jacked up" as Smith intensely brews about the severity of their injuries) but sadly, those are incredibly few and far between. The film slows to a crawl during the early stages of Omalu and Prema's courtship, and it ultimately loses all momentum as it stumbles to its conclusion. The last act may depict exactly what happened in real life, but since this isn't a documentary, there had to be a different way to bring this story to a close that didn't completely sap all of its energy twenty minutes before the credits rolled.

The way the main character is depicted reminded me a bit of how Spielberg handled Tom Hanks' lawyer in Bridge of Spies: Omalu embodies the American Dream simply because he does the right thing in the face of extraordinary opposition. Since the effects of Omalu's real-life discovery are still making headlines today, Concussion should have a sense of immediacy and power to it, but the by-the-numbers script rarely catches us up in the whirlwind of discovery and revelation the story needs. I wanted the movie to make me really feel something, and while I definitely walked away with a sense of the NFL as a villain, a film like this should inspire people to get up in arms about this topic. Unfortunately, Concussion's sluggish pacing might result in more shoulder shrugs than meaningful attempts to protect NFL players.

Warner Bros.' Sci-Fi Chase Film MIDNIGHT SPECIAL Gets Its First Trailer

$

I'm very curious about Midnight Special, the first studio film from Take Shelter and Mud director Jeff Nichols, and now Warner Bros. has released the movie's first trailer to give us a sense of what to expect. The sci-fi chase film has shades of E.T., Close Encounters, and Starman, and it looks like there's also a bit of Looper in there too. It's a throwback to movies from the '80s and has the simple, effective premise to prove it: a father (Michael Shannon) must protect his super-powered son from the government. With that writer/director, that premise, and a cast that includes Shannon, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard, Kirsten Dunst, and Joel Edgerton, I'm totally on board with this one.

Midnight Special arrives in theaters on March 18th, 2016.

In the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon) goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.

Supercut: STAR WARS Characters Losing Their Limbs in Battle

Characters losing limbs in Star Wars movies is such a recurring motif that Kevin Feige paid tribute to it by having a character lose an arm in every single movie in Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Editor Pablo Fernández Eyre decided to put together an energetic supercut of all of the Star Wars characters that get their arms, legs, or heads sliced or blasted off during the six live-action movies that exist so far.

The remix of Tomoyasu Hotei's "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" does a great job of keeping the mood light even though we're seeing horrible things happen to these people. Check it out:

Edgar Wright Will Co-Write and Direct A Shadowy DreamWorks Animation Film

$
0
0

Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright has his next live-action project, Baby Driver, all lined up for release on March 17th, 2017, but the English director is about to step into completely uncharted territory for him: animation. Deadline reports that Wright will co-write and direct an untitled DreamWorks Animation movie "centered on the concept of shadows."

“Edgar will spearhead a new approach to this fascinating concept and we’re ecstatic to have him onboard as director along with David [Walliams] as co-writer,” DreamWorks Animation’s Co-Presidents of Feature Animation Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria Thursday. “We’ve always been intrigued by a film concept involving shadows, and now with Edgar’s signature comedic style and abilities as a natural storyteller, audiences will be treated to a truly captivating and energetic tale.”

The report stresses that this new project is not DreamWorks' long-delayed Me and My Shadow, a movie that's been in development for years already. This is "something entirely originald dealing with the same basic concept." I wonder if that means Me and My Shadow will be shelved for good now. Wright is developing a movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Fortunately, the Milk with Johnny Depp that will be a hybrid of live-action and animation, but this mystery shadow movie will be his first fully animated effort.

“My first endeavors in film-making as a teenager were in animation, so it was hugely intriguing to get a call from DreamWorks Animation about potentially directing,” added Wright in a statement. “When the Shadows concept was suggested to me, I could see the poster, the title sequence and pretty much the whole movie. It's a blast writing this and to have one of my oldest friends in comedy, David Walliams, along for the adventure is a thrill.”

I know DreamWorks Animation isn't as beloved as Pixar or even Walt Disney Animation, but they've made some pretty great movies over the past few years with How to Train Your Dragon and the under-seen and under-appreciated Rise of the Guardians as standout examples. Guillermo del Toro was consulting on a lot of animated projects for the studio a little while ago (I know he was heavily involved with Rise of the Guardians), but I'm not sure if that's something he's still a part of or not. If he is, that'd be really cool to see the results of a collaboration between Wright and del Toro.

Are you looking forward to seeing what Wright can do with animation here?

Peter Jackson Was Absurdly Unprepared When He Filmed THE HOBBIT: Watch Him Talk About It

I am one of the few people that actually enjoyed The Hobbit trilogy that Peter Jackson and his team created. A lot of people didn’t care for the films, though. I admit that the films should have been better, and now we have some insight into why they weren’t as good as they should have been.

The production was basically a complete mess from beginning to end. This news comes from Jackson himself and his production team in a behind-the-scenes video where they talk about how difficult the production was. They were completely unprepared in every way, and it’s interesting to see how candid they are about how they weren’t ready to shoot these movies and all the problems and struggles they went through.

There were no storyboards for the film, the scripts weren’t completed, they were spontaneously shooting stuff, Jackson didn’t know what to shoot or how to shoot it. He explains that there was no prep time and no time to think! He literally winged it almost the entire time. There’s even footage of the day Jackson and the studio agreed to stop shooting The Battle of the Five Armies for several months. Why? Because they actually needed time to try and prepare such a massive battle. Up until that point it was just a complete mystery how the battle would play out, and they were just shooting random fighting shit. In the director's own words, “I didn’t know what in the hell I was doing.”

The production crew is actually saying these things on camera, and it’s absolutely fascinating to watch! As I’m watching it, I’m like, "Can they say this stuff?!" This might just be one of my favorite featurettes because of how open and honest everyone was about the production. Now I want to see a movie based on the making of the Hobbit trilogy!

This is a must-watch video, so check it out when you get a chance!

EVIL DEAD Remake Director Up For JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Film

$

The Justice League Dark film project has been getting a lot of traction lately. We've already heard some casting rumors that include Ron Perlman as Swamp Thing, and Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor being eyed for Constantine. Then we heard that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-star Ben Mendelsohn could take on the villain role of Anton Arcane.

The news continues to roll in, and now we have a list of three directors who are up to take the place of director Guillermo del Toro. According to JoBlo, the top three contenders for the gig currently include directing duo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (Big Bad Wolves) and Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead remake).

The only director I'm really familiar with is Alvarez. I love what he did with the Evil Dead remake, and although he's no del Toro, I still think he would make a solid choice to take on Justice League Dark. This movie needs a decent director, so hopefully the studio finds one that will take the project in the right direction and give the fans something they'll enjoy.

Who on this short list of directors would you like to see take on the film? Is anyone familiar with Keshales and Papushado's work? If so, are they a better choice than Alvarez?

Red-Band Trailer for DIRTY GRANDPA with Robert De Niro and Zac Efron

I never thought I’d see Robert De Niro and Zac Efron star in a film together. Then hell froze over and along came a film project called Dirty Grandpa. It’s a raunchy road trip comedy that follows a grandpa and grandson as they travel to Florida. What’s supposed to be an innocent bonding experience turns into a wild spring break adventure.

The red-band trailer that was released gives you a taste of the kind of comedic vulgarity that this movie has to offer. I don't think the movie looks very good, and it’s really weird watching Aubrey Plaza ridiculously throw herself at De Niro sexually all the way through the trailer. Maybe some of you might find it funny, but yeah… I’m not sold on this one. It's just trying way too hard to be funny.

Right before his wedding, an uptight guy named Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) is tricked into driving his foul-mouthed, former Army general grandfather Dick (Robert De Niro) to Florida for spring break, and his fiance (Julianne Hough) is a little concerned about it.

The movie also stars Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding), Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy), Jason Mantzoukas (The League), Adam Pally (The Mindy Project), and Henry Zebrowski (The Wolf of Wall Street).

Dirty Grandpa hits theaters on January 22nd, 2016.

Robert Carlyle Says TRAINSPOTTING 2 Is “One of the Best Scripts I’ve F—ing Read”

Danny Boyle is preparing to shoot Trainspotting 2 early next year, and it sounds like a sequel that fans can really get excited about. Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, and Ewen Bremner are all set to return, and it looks like they’ve read the script. During an interview with NME, Carlyle explains how much he loved it, saying:

“You’re going to think, ‘Of course he’s going to say this,’ but honestly, it’s one of the best scripts I’ve f—ing read. I mean, ever.”

The screenwriter who wrote the first film, John Hodge, returned to write the sequel, and it will loosely be based on Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting follow-up novel, Porno. Boyle previously explained that it will be its own thing, though. Carlyle continues:

“Obviously these four characters are 20 years older now and I’ve never seen a sequel that takes place 20 years after the original, so I think that gives it a certain unique quality. And the way John Hodge has put this thing down, obviously with the help of Danny Boyle, is to make it about how the characters’ lives have moved on… or have they? Without giving anything away, maybe some of them haven’t really moved on. That’s what the audience is going to have to go through with them. I tell you, this film is going to be quite emotional for people. Because the film sort of tells you to think about yourself. You are going to be thinking: ‘F—. What have I done with my life?'”

Sounds like it will be just as powerful a film as the first one. He went on to say:

“And though I’m obviously feeling a little bit tense about it because of the success of the first film, I’ll tell you this: if anyone can pull it off it’s Danny Boyle. He’s the best director I’ve ever worked with, he’s immense.”

Trainspotting 2 is scheduled to start shooting next summer. It’s gonna be good to see these characters back together again.
